I Have a Plan...
What Wukong would have done had he stopped the ritual in time to remove the fire ring form Mei

“The ritual-?! They’ve started the ritual!!! Agh– Sun Wukong, what did you do?!”
What hadn’t Sun Wukong done at this point? That’s an easier question to answer.
“Ngh– I told them to wait!”
Sun Wukong, the Almighty Monkey King, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, struggled against his icy restraints. Macaque stood in front of him, ice climbing up his arm in a deadly restraint. He stepped forward and Wukong snapped:
“STOP!!!”
His ex-partner looked back at him with familiar yellow eyes.
“If you hurt that kid I’ll—”
“What? Make things worse for MK?”
Macaque was seething with hatred, death in his eyes in more ways than one.
Wukong paused for a moment.
Worse..? Sure things were generally rough but, not like–
He caught Macaque going to leave again and shouted: “STOP! I HAVE A PLAN!!!” He pleaded, but Macaque disappeared in a sonic boom.
He did have a plan– a plan in which nobody (especially the kid) got hurt and Wukong could put an end to all this mess once and for all.
He activated his gold vision to keep an eye on Macaque, seeing flashes of Mei, MK and Macaque battling it out while Pigsy and Sandy were being covered in ice. Eventually, He got MK away and was grabbing Mei by the neck, the ice that was consuming him now consuming the girl too. He thrashed against the magic ice more at the scene, before growing more enraged at seeing Tang making the final steps of the ritual without him there.
“No! They were supposed to wait!!!” Wukong couldn’t believe the defiance– especially from Tang of all people.
“Are you absolutely sure the Samadhi fire is the only way to stop the lady bone demon?!” Nezha finally decided to say something that wasn’t an insult to the Monkey King.
“Only if we move right now!!” Wukong was anxious to get out of there– if they didn’t leave in time then the fire would go to Mei and not him and then he’d never get to end this– all of this.
“You better be right,” The prince scoffed as he closed his eyes, a familiar pink aura surrounding him. Wukong watched as he dissolved Macaque’s spear into lotus petals, and said, “Let’s hope my aim is as good as it used to be.”
Wukong barely had time to said, “What-???” before the petals became sharp and broke the ice around the pair. Once Wukong was on his feet, he didn’t even look at Nezha before summoning his cloud and disappearing just as fast as Macaque had.
he had to be there– it had to be him– only he was going to make this sacrifice– alright?! No Macaque was going to get in his way.
“STOP!!!!” Wukong shouted, launching on Macaque’s frozen arm, slamming Mei and him to the ground where the ice split in half, though still consuming Macaque. Wukong’s eyes glowed gold again as he looked at Mei and saw it– the fourth ring.
He looked at Mei, then at MK (still unconscious) and let a gold aura consume him before he reached into Mei’s very soul and pulled out the fourth Ring of Samadhi– and it quickly became aflame just like the other three. Wukong cried out in pain before forcing himself to consume it, singeing his clothes and fur as he forced it deep into his chest.
“Wh-what–? Mei-?! Monkey King?! What’s happening?!?!” Wukong recognized MK’s voice through the swirling flames and winds around him.
“What did you do?! You’ve ruined everything!!!” Macaque shouted at him, his teeth gnashing, but Wukong didn’t listen, his glowing fiery red eyes focused on MK.
“Monkey King! Wh-what’s wrong with him?! I know every single one of his powers– this isn’t one of them-!!! Can’t we get some water or something?!” MK shouted at everyone else.
No, no, no–! Get this under control, Wukong– the kid’s freaking out because of you—
“No water can extinguish the fires of Samadhi– and it appears the ‘Great Sun Wukong’ has overestimated his powers when facing it once again,” Nezha spat out bitterly.
“Overestimated? H-ha! I’m not even breaking a sweat! All I have to do is get to the Lady Bone Demon and now and then all this junk will be over, once and for all!” Wukong zoomed close to the celestial being, which made him create a forcefield to protect himself and the others behind him as fire spun around everywhere– even freeing Macaque of his curse.
“You did this on purpose didn’t you?! Ha! You’re even more pathetic than I thought!” Macaque cackled at the flaming figure. When Wukong turned his head to him, Macaque realized he fucked up, and quickly went to retreat into his shadow realm. Wukong didn’t wasn’t playing though, as he went to snatch him right out before he heard MK once again.
“What?! What does he mean ‘on purpose’? Of course he did! It’s his brilliant plan! He just– he’s gotta get it under control!” His student’s faith stayed strong.
The words made Wukong’s chest feel heavy as he froze in place, letting Macaque get away with that stupid smirk on his face. However, he didn’t leave, preferring to stay and watch.
“Your ‘Oh-So-Great’ Mentor here is going to fight the Lady Bone Demon alone, just like he always does,” Macaque looked at Wukong, “That’s what you were planning, wasn’t it?”
Wukong narrowed his eyes on him.
“Oh, there’s more isn’t there?”
“Of course he wouldn’t! He’s the Monkey King, he– well, no, that makes sense,” Tang was defending him, but backed out.
“N-no– You’re leaving again–?! B-but you just–” MK’s voice cracked, but he was quickly interrupted.
“Y-you’re gonna make MK take care of your messes, again?!” Mei finally shook off the whole ‘taking a part of her soul’ thing and glared at the almighty Monkey King, talking over MK. MK ran to his best friend’s side, helping her stand.
“That’s all Sun Wukong knows, girl– Abandonment and Shame” Macaque spat. Wukong went to attack him, but Macaque blew a raspberry before disappearing in the shadows, then appearing behind MK and Mei.
“This is me cleaning up my own mess! I am going to go to the Lady Bone Demon alone and destroy her alone,” The Monkey King forced himself to look MK in the eyes, a ring of flames shooting across the sky again.
“B-but what about us sticking together?! A-and you just came back– you can’t just–”
“Y-you can’t just abandon MK like this again!! You’re always leaving him on his own– You are his mentor-! When are you going to actually start caring about him?!” Mei shouted at him.
“Don’t you get it, girl? Sun Wukong cares for no one. All his friends are looong dead and he’s been itching to join them for centuries,” Macaque teased her. “Isn’t that right, Sunny?”
Wukong growled, taking the ball of flames and containing it to just his body so he could tackle Macaque, but once again he dove right back into his shadows, and now MK and Mei were on the floor, terrified.
This time, Macaque didn’t come back.
“H-he was lying right? Macaque always lies– it’s like– his main thing– right, Monkey King?” MK tried to joke, but Wukong could feel the flames still swirling inside his cold, stone interior. If he were weaker, he’d let himself collapse and allow the flames to eat him alive and then he’d just sit there and burn and burn until the whole universe was destroyed.
“I-i… Am going to deal with The Lady Bone Demon, once and for all. It-it’s my fault Tang Sanzeng only locked her up– I should’ve done something– I– I’m cleaning up my own mess.” Wukong glanced at Pigsy.
“‘Sides… I’m not exactly meant for this whole ‘mentoring’ thing.”
That made the cook jump. It was clear he didn’t expect Wukong to remember that exchange, but he remembered everything from that day.
Everything…
“Monkey King, that’s not true–” MK went to touch his shoulder–
Wukong immediately zipped away from him.
“Don’t– Don’t touch me, kid,” He said, before his eyes widened in terror.
MK was kneeling, clutching his wrist– it wasn’t on fire (thank the stars) but it was clear the flames had gotten close, the heat alone burning his entire palm.
Wukong instinctively went to him, but Nezha got in his way, holding his staff in a “I’m not attacking but take one more step and I’ll skewer you without hesitation” kind of way.
“K-kid, I’m…” Sun Wukong didn’t know what to say– the glare from Mei shutting his throat.
“I’m sorry. Mei, Pigsy and Nezha are all right– I’m no mentor… And-... And I’m also no friend, either.” He turned away towards the Lady Bone Demon’s fortress and mech.
“Wait– It’s fine really! I-i’m alright-! I can still fight! Let me fight with you! We can do this together!” MK’s pleading rang in the great Sun Wukong’s head.
“I don’t want you to fight with me, kid! I want you to be safe and with your mortal friends! I will not— I-i cannot– I…” Wukong’s tears burned just as much as the fire around him.
“Monkey King, how’s about we just sit and think about this together and then we’ll decide our–” Sandy tried to be pragmatic, but Wukong silenced him with his hand.
“The Lady Bone Demon is too strong for us to do this ‘together’. If you fight her, she will kill you– but before she kills you, she will break you, and I’m not going to let that happen to any of you,” He looked at everyone at the ruins, making eye contact with each of them– except for MK.
“No! Y-you can’t just abandon me like this-! Y-you’re my mentor, I-i– What will happen to you?!” MK forced himself to stand and walk to MK, though Nezha blocked him from getting too close.
Sun Wukong looked in his student’s eyes. They were so old for eyes so young. He had so much stress in him– stress he never asked for that Wukong gave him because he was a useless, impulsive, lazy, snarky, self centered, half witted, cripplingly lonely mentor who only ever caused him pain like that burn on his hand and the age in his soul.
“You… no, no Monkey King please!” MK pushed aside Nezha, but Wukong leapt off the mountain onto a cloud.
“Kid, I… I don’t want to hurt you more. Just— stay out of this,” Wukong said.
“B-but this is hurting me! I-i– I love you– y-you’re like a father–”
“I SAID TO STAY OUT, KID!” Wukong shouted, causing utter silence to fall upon the mountain ruins.
MK’s eyes started to fill with tears.
No, no, no– this wasn’t how this was supposed to go– Wukong was supposed to leave, and never have to feel the pain of leaving MK– because MK was supposed to know he had his friends-! And that Wukong does care for him b-but– It wasn’t supposed to be this hard.
“Monkey King… please…” MK pleaded one last time.
“Kid, I… I can’t lose you– I don’t want to hear you say I won’t because I know that isn’t true. All you mortals– You live less than a fifth of the time I spent trapped under the Five Phases Mountain– A-and I’ve tried to get used to that fact b-but… But I just can’t. I get so attached– and when they die, they die and it destroys me and I just– I’m not ready to ever see that happen to you and now that I have this chance I-i have to take it, MK– I have to… I love you too kiddo, but… But I have to say goodbye first, for once…”
…
Sun Wukong did not say this aloud.
“You need to sit this one out, bud. And trust me– you’re better off without me anyways.” He said, closing his eyes and turning his back and zipping away, ignoring the piercing cry of his name that MK gave as he flew far, far away.
Wukong also ignored his own tears, as they sizzled down his cheeks.
“You know, for someone made of stone, you sure cry a lot.”
Macaque.
Wukong said nothing.
“Wow, can’t even say goodbye to lil old me? That’s harsh– though not as harsh as you were to your prodigy. And here I thought I was the bad guy here,” He laughed.
“I’m on a mission, Macaque. If you could just fuck off that’d be real swell,” Wukong grit his teeth and flew faster.
“Wow, you really are hurt! With the way you acted with the kid, I’d totally believe you’re a heartless monster, but it turns out under all that fluff and stone there is a heart!” Macaque teased.
“I did what I had to Macaque, I… I can’t– I don’t have to explain myself to you,” Wukong shook his head.
“You know, I didn’t actually expect you to go out of your way to make things worse for MK– but you really haven’t learned a goddamn thing, have you? You abandoned me, then Tang Sanzeng and Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing more times than I can count until you got your act together but only for like– fifty or a hundred years because when they all died you just did the same old same old over and over and–”
“I thought I told you to fuck off, Macaque. Or do you want to know what the Fire of Samadhi feels in your fur too?!” Monkey zipped right up to him again.
Macaque smiled.
“I really hope this is how you wanted to go out, Sun Wukong. I know it’s how I did,” He winked, and then disappeared into the shadows again, leaving Sun Wukong all alone…
But on his way to defeat the Lady Bone Spirit– even if it, especially if it kills him.
“I’m so sorry, kid… but I’m just not strong enough,” he said, before heading straight for the Lady Bone Demon for a final confrontation.
For both of them.
