Nothing in Batman comics is canon because it’s literally 90% fanfiction written after the actual creators stopped writing the characters.
anon it doesn't work that way.
By that logic, practically noone exists because the original writer of Batman, Bob Kane and Bill Finger, only created Bruce, Dick, Alfred, and the villains gallery. That's it.
No Barbara, no Jason, no Tim, no Damian, Steph, Cass, Duke, Lucius, Tim Fox, Kate, Talia - there's no one then.
But suppose we go back on that statement and say 'well actually, the creators of new characters', which still doesn't make sense but let's go with that. Then major plots wouldn't happen. Because Max Allan Collins and Chris Warner created Jason Todd but Judd Winick is the one who brought him back to life. Marv Wolfman and Pat Broderick created Tim Drake but Alan Grant wrote a lot of the Robin comic and Batman comic characterization for him.
It's physically impossible to say that just because other people continued the series, the comics can't be taken seriously.
Comics are the source material. Of which fanfics are based on.
The Star Trek and Star Wars book series are written by multiple different authors but that doesn't mean that what's written doesn't happen or isn't true or is wrong. The 39 Clues and Doctor Who series are the same deal.
Batman comics are canon. Because if only the works of the original authors of Batman were to be considered canon, then practically everyone in the Batman universe doesn't exist/doesn't matter. Because they're just fanfic then.
But this idea doesn't just stop at the Batman fandom anymore because every comic was written this way. The people in Superfam? Gone. Flashfam? Gone. Arrowfam? Gone. Like this logic doesn't just apply to Batman, it applies to virutally every character in the existence of DC.
The beauty of comics is seeing how the next writer will continue the story. Sometimes they're right, sometimes they need tweaking, and sometimes they're wrong although that's usually very rare.
The problem with fandom's view on comic writing is the belief that whatever the authors create must match our perspective of the characters. That's wrong. Their characterization is what we should be adding on/building on to our perspective of the characters. Unless there is something so wrong, something so illogical, that it must be noted because that character has never acted that way before, then we must discard or critisize a comic.
Comics develop. Characters develop. Each writer brings something new and adds a layer of depth to each character they write about. That's how we get new interactions, new relationships, new sides that make each character interesting.
Take the original Dick Grayson comic and his intro to Robin
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Detective Comics (1937) Issue #38
Dick originally wanted to go to the police. He had no intention of going after Tony Zucco but Bruce is the one who demands they go after him together by themselves!
I love this version created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, but I also love the version created by a completely different author where Dick decides to stake out Zucco on his own. Both versions show different sides of him and authors sometimes even choose which one they want to include. Some have gone with this version where Dick tries to go to the police before being interrupted by Bruce and others have gone with the second, more famous version. But neither of them are bad and you can't say that the one where Dick goes after Tony Zucco is fanfiction. It's canon. If it's written in comics, it happened unless there's some disastrous, glaring contradiction.
You have to understand, these comics - especially Dick and Bruce's - are nearly 100 years old. Dick, and it's wild to think about this, existed before even the Justice League did. Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, and Aquaman were all created after him. If the orginial writers stopped writing, and noone picked it up, there would be no Justice League and that's a problem because the Justice League is one of the foundations of the DC comics.
So much has changed in a century and new writers constantly come in to show that change. That's why comics after the original writers finish writing are still canon and important. The original characterizations of all these major players were all super peppy and cheerful before new writers added angst and drama to their backstories. Bruce and Dick used to laugh and grin when they went crime fighting with no sadness or anger or other emotions. It wasn't until a couple decades later where writers started writing that in which is how we get the grim avenger Batman today.
Here's the third point to why they're relevant even though they're written by new authors: the passage of time in real life, is included in canon comics characterizations.
One comic talks about Dick discussing the Joker and he says, "at the beginning, it was just all fun and games. He would cause problems but at the end of the day it was a game. But one day, things went too far. People got shot. That day, the Joker changed. He was darker and evil. It wasn't games anymore."
This comic panel talks about the Golden Age to now, the progression and development of characters.
The comics and reality are inseparable because reality is literally written in. The works of writers after the orignal ones aren't arbitrary or some whimsical thing.
It's very different from fanfiction because fanfiction has no need to stick to the truth or canon characterization but these comic writers do because they have an obligation to do so. The only problem they might have is accidentally focusing too much on one aspect of a character and neglecting the other parts but almost none of them are way off the mark.
So no, for the sake of characterization, personality development, plot events, and new interactions, all comics are extremely important and definitely canon. Us readers might have different opinions and thoughts on them but it's irrelevant in the face of the fact that the comics are the only truth to which we can base our interpretations on.

If you're still doing prompts: Mulder and Scully both learn something new about each other in the same conversation.
Mulder sprawls along the vinyl bench seat, all rangy limbs and untidy hair. It’s getting so that she can look at him without seeing a phantom gun pressed to his temple.
Scully picks at her Cobb salad, pondering.
“I don’t like spiders,” she says finally. “I respect them as a scientist but I don’t like the way they move. Too many legs.” She shivers a little, imagining the finely articulated hydraulics.
Mulder grins at her. “Really?” he says. “Spiders?”
She scowls. “Sorry it’s not esoteric enough for you. But yeah, spiders give me the creeps.”
He bites into his cheeseburger, pink juices running down his chin. My god, what wouldn’t she do for that metabolism.
Scully watches him chew, watches his mandible move, tries not to imagine it blown to pulp in that sad little room. Tries not to imagine Modell laughing.
“Mmmf,” he says, swallowing. Clearing his throat. “My favorite movie is The Princess Bride.”
She coughs around a wedge of boiled egg. “Seriously?”
“Seriously,” he says. “And I might add that being wigged out by spiders isn’t really a “fun fact,’ Scully. Not in the traditional sense of fun.”
“We both know you’ll have fun with it down the road,” she says darkly. “The Princess Bride though. Huh.”
“It’s so quotable!”
She allows that it is.
“What’s yours?” he asks. “Favorite movie, I mean.”
Scully ponders this. Does she have a favorite movie? Is it Casablanca? Is it Citizen Kane? She feels a weird, clenching panic. What if Modell had killed her and she didn’t have a favorite movie?
She can’t say The Exorcist, she’s said it once already and it’s not exactly true. And she’s not ready to say Silence of the Lambs.
“Scully?”
She looks up at him with a shy smile. “It’s A Wonderful Life.”
He smiles back, his eyes crinkled and the colors of a temperate forest in September. “That’s a good one,” he says.
She pushes Modell away firmly now, into his lonely hospital room. She’s a Catholic and a doctor and a law enforcement official and she hopes all the same that he dies.
“I don’t kill spiders,” she says, by way of penance. “I try to ignore them”
Mulder reaches across the table for her hand. He squeezes it briefly and Scully feels everything in it, the friendship and the fear and the strange understanding.
“They give me the creeps too,” Mulder says, then eats a fry.
Scully is touched by his goodness, his compassion.
She pretends she is not in very serious danger of being in gasping, headlong love.

Apologies if this (or anything similar) has been asked before, but how long did Wayfarer take to plan/write/etc before you started posting about it on tumblr or actually.. writing the game?
I'm currently in the very early planning stages of my own IF and I don't want to rush on making the worldbuilding. I imagine lots of planning went into Wayfarer (?) before you started to actually write the game or promote it on tumblr, and I suppose I'm just curious to know? Again, my apologies if this is a weird question or one you don't want to answer.
Oh that's a good question!
To be honest, I wouldn't use what I did as a good example of what to do. 😅 As some of you know, Wayfarer has its roots as a Dragon Age fan game. That game went nowhere (and has no similarities to Wayfarer other than Alexia, Ren, Calla and Aeran were all originally OCs for it), but it did mean that I had an audience from the DA fandom when I made the switch to original writing. I made this blog and did announcement posts and OC questions before I had anything substantially written. I released one demo in May 2019 and didn't get much further than that.
2020 was when I made changes and abandoned the fan game to work on what is now Wayfarer. I did about 5 months of plotting and planning before I made the announcement; I actually did most of the initial worldbuilding and outlines for a video game scriptwriting course I was taking at the time. I had to develop a game bible for a hypothetical game, so I used Wayfarer for that coursework, although that game bible is not very representative of what the game is now since I had to do specific things in specific ways to appease my professor.
The first thing I did after announcing the switch to orginal fiction was commission a portrait of Mel. 😂 I already had portraits of Aeran, Alexia, Ren and Calla and though those ones were commissioned while the game was still Dragon Age, their character designs are still the same. Though I don't think artwork is necessary to have a successful IF, it can be very helpful in terms of gaining an audience. Visuals are eye-catching!
I tried a lot of different things in 2020. Some things worked, some didn't. The first half of the year I was worldbuilding, outlining, and reworking the game bible. I wrote and coded a Prologue that eventually got scrapped, and the beginning of Episode 1 up to the fight with Kane, which didn't. I livestreamed it on my Twitch channel with my partner reading and doing voices (shout out to anyone who remembers Southern Sero because that was... a thing that happened).
I rewrote the Prologue with the one we have now in September 2020 and worked to add more material to Episode 1 before making an official game announcement in November 2020. I can't quite remember how far that first demo went, but I think it was the Prologue and Episode 1's fight with Kane if the player went to Rat Alley and up to the end of the meeting with Zenaida if the player went to the docks. All of that would have been around 51k words of playable content in the game when the demo released.
Looking back, I probably would have done things differently. I also think that there's no one way to make an IF. What works for one person is not necessarily going to work for another, it's okay to find your own path. 💗
But I can give a little bit of advice:
You need to know what you are writing before you go ahead and write it. IF is not a medium that can be pantsed (unless you're creating a short or micro game). Get comfortable plotting and outlining in well in advance. You should have an idea of how your game is going to shape up and the main thrust of the plot before you start, otherwise you're going to get overwhelmed with too many ideas and risk fizzling out.
To promote a game, you need to have a game. Before you launch an announcement post and officially start marketing your game, you need to have a playable demo with substantial content. Think of it this way: you only have one shot to make a first impression and it has to be a good one. The demo needs to introduce the player to their character, the world, the game's main mechanics, and a plot hook. The amount of work this is going to take is going to differ depending on the scope of your game and your writing style, but a character creator and 1000-3000 words is not going to cut it.
Don't use your blog as a way to worldbuild. Keep that offline and between you and your beta group or writing circle. If there's one repeat tendency I've seen a lot over the past few years of IF development on tumblr, it's that there is sometimes more interest in answering OC asks and writing flash fiction and answering prompts then there is in writing the game. These asks can be a lot of fun and can absolutely drive engagement for your blog, but at the end of the day they can either take away from the time and energy you should put towards your game or they will spoil the development of your characters for the players. The line between player engagement and player participation in a game's development is a very fine one that can get tricky to walk.
Worldbuilding isn't something that you do at the start and never again. It's something that grows with you as your write your project; sometimes you'll have to shift things and change them, fill in holes you didn't see coming, scrap ideas entirely. Allow yourself breathing room. I think you're off to a good start by knowing that you don't want to rush the worldbuilding. It's something that takes a lot of time to grow organically, and it's going to change and grow with you.
Good luck! 💖

Kane & Jim #48.5: Helpless
Chronological masterlist / Writing order masterlist
content: captivity, vampire whumpee, begging, death wish, victim blaming, mentions of offscreen torture/gore
not quite long enough to be a chapter, not quite short enough to be a drabble.
-
Kane was desperate. After two months of nonstop torture and not a single drop of blood, he was willing to do anything in order to make the pain stop. The problem was, there was nothing he could do. He couldn't fight or run or hide or die or defend himself in any way. All he could do was beg and hope any given hunter would take pity on him.
So that's what he did.
"Please help," he pleaded, looking up with watery eyes from where he knelt. This was the fifth hunter he'd tried this on- he didn't even bother with the true sadists, but with any hunter who showed an ounce of restraint, he begged for salvation. "Please, help me! I'll do anything, I just want it to stop hurting, please. I know my place. Please do something, please make it stop, I need help!"
Time and time again, he was rejected. Hunters would slink off uncomfortably, tell him to shut up, or laugh in his face. But no one ever helped. He was a vampire, everyone knew he'd tried to kidnap a human only two months ago, everyone heard the death threats he had made when he still had fire in him.
By the third month, Kane had started begging for death. It was just another form of begging for help, really. He was starting to believe he'd never get out of here, and he just couldn't do this for years and decades and centuries, he couldn't.
"Please kill me," he'd weep, eyes caught between desperate fear and dull, lifeless misery. "I can't do it anymore. Please, I can't take any more, please let it end. If you just let me have your stake for a second, I can do it myself if you want. You kill vampires all the time, don't you, sir? Please, I need it to stop, please just kill me."
And yet, again he was denied. There was less laughing in his face this time, more uncomfortable looks. These hunters stopped visiting, their relatively-light punishments filled in by crueler hunters. Closed fists exchanged for whips, steel knives exchanged for silver ones. It was never explicitly said.
One hunter coldly explained to him, looking down at him with disgust. "I won't kill you. You deserve everything you're getting here, just like every leech." He kicked him, and Kane crumpled in on himself. A kick from a human would have barely even bruised him just months ago, but he was so weak, now.
"Yes, sir. I'm sorry."
Kane was wrong. He could take more, no matter how much he thought he couldn't. He didn't have any other choice.
He'd curl up in a little ball in the corner and plead for them to stay away. He'd look up at them, on his knees, and beg for mercy. He'd follow every order to a tee, even the ones that hurt, even the ones to stay still as they rent flesh from bone or pressed terrible burning silver into him, making his frayed nerves light up with agony. He'd do it all, just for the promise of mercy.
But here, mercy wasn't the absence of pain. It was the absence of more pain, and it worked just as well for the hunters' purposes. Because anything he would be willing to do for the pain to stop, he would be more than willing to do to stop it getting worse.
Stay still for the steel knife or we'll use a silver one. Only speak respectfully or we'll cut your tongue out too. Come here and position yourself, back to me, or it's an extra 30 lashes.
No matter how hard he tried to be obedient, no matter how much he begged for mercy, for less pain, for a drop of blood, for death, he was afforded no relief aside from the occasional hunter being willing to call it quits early. It was the only thing he had, as small a reward as it was, and it reinforced his behavior tenfold. He could be good, if it meant a little less pain.
There was no help in his new life.

"I'm not sure" Natasha replied looked directly into your eyes, "I'm going to see him to the police, will you be okay?" she adds as a slight frown forms on your face, "Mhm" you nod before she's out the door, closing it behind her. "You will pay for this!" Kane scoffs at Natasha as she politely guides him to the elevator while the entire office as their eyes on the pair of them, "Save it for the police" she hushes him before pressing the number 3 button.
"You won't get away with this! how the fuck are you a lawyer?! You lit-"
Natasha cuts Kane off by slamming him to the wall, her right hand tightly wrapped around his throat, "You're foolish if you think Y/n will ever believe a word you just told her! You brought this upon yourself and this time, you won't be seeing the light of day!" She tightens her grip with every word just as the elevator doors open, she throws him to the floor as Bucky comes around the corner.
"Who cut him free?" Natasha asked, glaring at Bucky.
"Nobody!" Kane coughs as he catches his breath, "I did it myself" he adds.
"I didn't ask you!" Natasha delivers a harsh kick to Kane's ribs causing him to whine in pain, "take him back and keep a fucking eye on him, can you do that?" she looks up at Bucky who nods, "and find who cut the prick free" she adds.
Natasha returned to your office with a look of worry, "are you okay?" she asks softly. "No, I'm not" you mutter, "I don't know what's going on but Kane seemed really sure about blaming you for kidnapping him? He said that I asked you to do th-"
"Hey, hey" she walks over to you, "he's just trying to get into your head. I'm sure he's lawyers told him I'm representing you in the case. You know I wouldn't do something so stupid" she tries to assure you, but her words aren't enough to convince you.
"His hand was bandaged and you" you took a step back from your boss, "you take off randomly" you add.
"Y/n, listen to me. Kane wants me off this case, he wants to make you out to be a bad mother, these are just stories he's coming up with. He's already in enough trouble for breaking the order in place. This is what he wants from you, to be second guessing and worried"
Natasha's words now made more sense as you took a moment to think about everything that had just happened, "I'm sorry" you sigh in relief. "You don't have to apologise, how about you and Dylan go home as soon as he gets here? It's been a tough day" your boss offers.
"Thanks" you smile softly as you feel yourself start to calm down, "if Kane's in custody, I think Dylan and I should go back home, I don't want to keep throwing him out of routine" you start to tidy your desk as Dylan should be arriving within in the next 10 minutes, "thank you for letting us stay with you and for helping" you add.
"Will you stop thanking me? You're m-" Natasha pauses for a moment as you look up at her, "go on" you coached.
"You're my" she paused again as if the words were starting to make her choke, "you're my f-"she tries once more. "Friend?" you ask with a raised brow, "Yes" she answers quietly with a light nod. A warm smile tugs proudly at your lips, "why are you smiling like that?" Natasha almost seems disgusted.
"Because I think it's sweet that the not so cold hearted and very threating boss considers me her friend"
"Don't make a big deal out of it, the others will get jealous"
"Your secret is safe with me, bestie" you could tell the term made Natasha cringe. "J-just call me if you need anything, please" Nat is quick to excuse herself.
----
Even though Natasha made sense with Kane trying to make you out to be a bad mother, it still didn't stop your mind from wondering why she had a phone locked away or why she did take sudden trips and you weren't exactly sure that being a lawyer and whatever family business the woman had was enough to pay for things you'd seen.
"Mommy, you're not watching!" Dylan pouts as you look up from the laptop, "sorry darling, I'm just doing something for work" you smile softly at your son. Your laptop screen showing the google search results for the hour glass keychain you saw on the maids set of keys. "But you promised" Dylan crossed his small arms over his chest, you did, you had promised the two of you would have a movie night with popcorn and no distractions.
"You're right, I'm sorry" you reply, closing the lid of your laptop and turning your full attention to the movie Dylan picked. "So is that Mater?" you asked pointing to the red car on the TV. Dylan giggles and shakes his head, "no mommy that's lightening mcqueen!!" He corrects you before you pull him close to you and pull the throw blanket over you both. Just hearing him laugh was enough to stop your worries for the evening.
As always, Dylan was fast asleep just before the movie came to an end. Popcorn crumps sprinkled on his top reminding you to make sure he brushes his teeth first thing in the morning. Carefully you carry him to his bed, tucking him in with a soft kiss on his forehead before taking a moment to admire the little human that you would do anything for, even if it meant spending some time apart.
It wasn't an idea you loved but with everything going on, all you wanted was Dylan to be safe. You sat with the idea for a while as you slowly sipped your way through a nice hot tea. To ask your parents to have Dylan until the court case was over or to hope Kane would stay in police custody until then. You knew Natasha would have you and Dylan back in her condo if you'd asked but you had questions and even though it was none of your business truly, it still made you start to question Natasha's private life.
"Y/n? is that you?" Your mothers soft voice came through your phone making you smile instantly at her voice, "Hi mum" you replied.
"Oh my god, it is you! Darling is everything okay? We haven't heard anything in a while, we assumed you had to move again, how's Dylan? How are you?" Her questions came flying at you without giving you a split second to think.
"A lot has been going on, I hope I'm not calling too late"
"Of course not darling, your father is just getting in from poker night" she chuckles lightly, oh how you miss them, "what's going on sweetheart?" she asks.
"Can you put me on speaker? I need to ask you guys something"
"Sure, George honey!" your mother calls for your father, "how do I put this on speaker phone?"
"Why do you want it on speaker? I don't want to hear about the town gossip" you hear your father mumble as he comes closer to the phone, "just do it would you" your mother sighs. Nothing has changed, they still argue as they did when you were living with them. "There, it's on speaker" your father says, "tell Brenda that John owes me a case of beer for tonight" he adds.
"It's not Brenda, it's Y/n" your mother corrects. "Hi dad" you smile softly to yourself.
"Well, I'll be damned! Is that my little girl?" Hearing your father call you his little girl once again almost made you tear, "She has something to ask us, go on honey, what is it?" Your mother speaks.
"It's a long story, something I'd rather tell you both in person but I was wondering if you both would take Dylan for a while? It wouldn't be for long, it's just I ne-"
"Of course, we will, you know we'll do anything for you both. What's going on? are you both okay? Do you have to move again? Please honey, we're just worried about you both" Your mother's worried town starts to break your heart, you hated so much that you left them behind.
"He found us again" you sighed.
"I wish you would've let me rip his head off when I had the chance!" you heard your father scoff, "But" you add before another word was mentioned, "My boss, Miss Romanova, she's a lawyer and damn good one. I've been working for her since we moved to New York and she knows about Kane and the whole situation" you explain
"A lawyer? Now I'm just getting more worried, Y/n"
"Mum, please, it's okay" you assure her, "Kane just wants custody of Dylan but Miss Romanova says we have a good case against him, I gave a statement to the police today about….you know and uhm, we put a restraining order in place"
"I wish you would've done this years ago when you had the chance instead of running off like you did" your father's tone is full of hurt, a hurt you caused. "I know dad, I'm sorry…I was scared but I promise this time is different, I just, I need Dylan to be safe… Kane is worse than I thought"
"Nothing was ever good about that boy" your mother mutters like you wouldn't hear, "Does this mean you're taking him to court?" she asks.
"Yeah, Miss Romanova won't let me pay for her services, I just want Dylan away from all this until it's over" you explained just as you heard a knock on your door, "guys, I'll call you back, somebody is at my door, I love you" you added quickly before pressing the red button on your screen.
The knock came again, this time louder. "I'm coming, gez!" you mumbled to yourself as you walked up to the door and looked through the peep hole. "Who are you?" you asked, making sure the door was locked. "Oh, I'm a friend of uhm, Romanova's" the mans voice sounded familiar but not somebody you could remember.
"She doesn't live here, go away"
"Come on, Y/n, we used to be great friends and I think you're going to want to open that door" the man spoke sternly, the smell of cigarette made its way under your door but still you couldn't make out who he was by the small hole you were looking through.
"Please leave before I call the police" you say as you pull up Natasha's number on your phone.
"Don't make me break down the fucking door, I just need to talk about Kane and the things you're saying" you stopped your actions and looked up at the door with a frown, "you know Kane?" you question but got no answer. The loud shot of a gun being fired caused you to jump back from the door.
Tumblr media
Before you could even make a run for Dylan the man you now had better view of kicked the door open and smirked at you, "Remember me? Darling" he chuckled making your stomach turn, "What do you want?! Please, just go away!" You begged as he stepped towards you, the commotion waking Dylan. "Kane mention you were telling stories about what happened that night, I'm just here to remind you of the truth" Matt spoke with every step he took close to you as you backed yourself into the wall, your eyes traveled to Dylan who stood in the doorway of his room.
"Kane is in custody, and I've alerted the police!" you spat giving Dylan a quick shake of your head to tell him to stay where he was. "You really are stupid, aren't you? Just like that wonderful night, tell all of us how much you wanted it" Matt comes to a stop, a little to close to you. "Please, just leave me alone!" You begged unsure what was going to happen, Matt chuckled once more at your begging, "come with me without making a scene and you'll be okay"
"Matt, I'm not going with you!" you said, making sure to say his name, "don't make this harder than it has to be" Matt replied brushing a lock of hair out of your face as your jaw clenches at his actions, "so pretty, you haven't changed a single bit" he runs his tongue over his lips, "it's a pity you had my boss torture Kane, otherwise I wouldn't be here. I'm surprised she ate up your lies"
"Leave my mommy alone!" Dylan runs up behind Matt doing his best to punch the taller man wherever he could get his little fists on. "This must be little Dylan" Matt smirks at you before he turns around to look down at Dylan.
"Leave him alone, Matt!"
"Maybe I'll just take you huh?" He slightly pushes Dylan to the side, "do you want to come on a little holiday?" he asks your son. "Fine! I'll go with you but leave him alone!" You step in front of Dylan with your eyes glued to Matt as his smirk only makes you want to be sick. "Good girl lets go" he grabs your arm.
"Wait! Let me just put him back to bed, please"
Matt groaned, "no, he'll be fine. I don't have time to waste, let's go!" He tugs at your arm. "Dylan, honey, go to your room, okay? I'll be soon, I promise" you say as Matt drags you with him, his grip on your arm was sure to leave a bruise. Dylan's eyes filled with tears as be begged for you to stay with him, "it's okay baby, I'll be back, okay?" was the last he heard of you as Matt dragged you out of the apartment.

Small tangent on Bette Kane and how people treat her
re-reading Beast Boy (2000) in order to really get a sense of where Bette was pre-Batwoman run (2014).
Does anyone else just feel sad whenever Bette brings up Titans West and everyone shoots her down? Objectively, I know that no one thinks Teen Titans West is a great team - especially when people like Hawk and Dove seem better off solo. But you do get a sense of loneliness whenever Bette is so excited at the prospect of getting the band back together.
Tumblr media
Given that it's become sort of a running gag for Bette to suggest reforming Titans West, it is something that DC is aware of.
As the Beast Boy run continues, Gar gets himself into incriminating shapeshifter trouble and is put in a holding cell by the police. Bette goes to help him in her Flamebird costume (notably the one from the 80s).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After reading a lot of her earlier appearances in older Titans comics, this kind of exasperated annoyance when Bette makes an appearance is surprisingly frequent. She doesn't have a great reputation among the other Titans at least.
Later on in issue #2, Nightwing hears of Gar's predicament and goes to LA. In the next issue, he fights an enemy shapeshifter who was impersonating Gar. Bette shows up back in the police station to try and bail Gar out, but her check is invalid and the police officer from the prior issue rips it in half. Bette mentions, confused, that she's never tried to post bail before and that she even borrowed money from her Aunt Kathy. (Knowing that Catherine Hamilton wasn't created until the Batwoman series, I personally think this Kathy is supposed to be Kathy Kane.)
When the police learn that Nightwing is fighting "Beast Boy", the heroes learn that the murders of the previous issues were the cause of an impersonator trying to frame Gar. Bette leaves and goes to help Nightwing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the first time I've seen Dick and Bette interacting outside of brief Titans crossovers. It's super obvious that he thinks she's annoying and that she's not skilled enough to be a vigilante. He cuts her off mid-speech and tries to sideline her when they fight the shapeshifter. When it inevitable gets away, he puts the blame on her involvement. Later on, he leaves her to deal with the police and the public on her own.
Putting all of these panels together, the writers are making Bette out as not a "real" hero, someone who clings to the past. In comics like this, Bette is always treated like that annoying little girl who doesn't know when to give up. Especially because Bette has never had her own solo comic, all of her characterization comes with the perspective of whoever's run she's cameoing in.
I am willing to concede that Beast Boy is a very early 2000s comic but since Bette is the only other female character in it besides two villains - it doesn't look good overall. Not to mention, this comic still sticks with the continuity of "Bette has a crush on/is obsessed with Nightwing." ANYWAY this leads to some panels that I actually like, even if it comes off rude and a little misogynstic with Dick telling Bette what to do.
Tumblr media
It's that last little declaration of defiance that really solidifies to her character to me. Bette Kane has never needed permission to do anything, especially not being a hero. Also, this kinda puts back into canon that Dick was the inspiration for Bette becoming Flamebird.
When it comes to her characterization, I can't help but feel like she should be (rightly) a little bitter about this convo. When we get her back in Batwoman, Kate doesn't treat her as an equal either and also tries to get her to quit. Bette is a bit younger in the Batwoman run since I think it's post-one of many reboots, but it just adds onto the lack of trust anyone has in her.
Despite being Bruce's cousin, she's a blip in the wider Batman comic-verse. I'm pretty sure Bette hasn't directly interacted with Bruce in a comic, much less anyone other than Dick, Kate, or Cass (once).
All of this goes to say that I'm definitely addressing all of that and making it a main point in my fics. My Flamebird-in-Gotham au came about specifically because I want to reconcile the Bette Kane I like with the way others in-universe treat her. Bette deserves to be treated with respect. Trust me, there will be words had in fanfic form.
(Also bc I just think Bette and Damian interacting would be both interesting and funny).

George Harrison, February 1965; photo by Henry Grossman.
"George looks as I would expect Hamlet to look. Early morning, totally open, something going on in the mind, not trying to put anything on. It’s one of my best portraits." - Henry Grossman, Brandeis Magazine, 2013
“I call this my ‘Hamlet Portrait.’ Having been an actor, I said to myself, Wow, that look is how I would want the actor playing Hamlet to look: direct, simple, at ease, no put-on, no pretense.” - Henry Grossman, CBS 60 Minutes Overtime, 2013
“We were having breakfast in Nassau. George came in; he was still in his pajamas, had just awakened. I wasn’t taking pictures at breakfast, or not intending to, and he looked so totally undefended, and different from any time I’d seen him that I said, ‘George, I gotta take a picture.’” - Henry Grossman, CBS This Morning, March 23, 2013 (x)

Just finished reading "The Monty Within", the second story in Tales From the Pizzaplex #7.
I can't help but feel that our protagonist, Kane, was at least somewhat inspired by Kane Carter, the developer of the POPGOES games. This is because Kane Carter has been known to say really problematic things on Twitter without thinking. I'm not convinced Scott Cawthon didn't see that and think, "What if someone's possessing him to make him say that stuff?"
In this story, Kane is being possessed by Montgomery Gator... or rather, The Mimic's version of Monty. When Kane observes Monty in the food-fight game, Monty is not only copying Kane's every move, but the moves of every player around him, mimicking them. Mimic1/Glitchtrap has control of Monty in that game. And, for whatever reason, he managed to download himself into Kane's brain.
And in the end, "Monty" tries to evict Kane from his own brain and body through very extreme means. Ouch...
Mimic Monty is a destructive asshole with not a lot of empathy for others. He's a bully, plain and simple. It really makes me wonder if the real Monty has any sort of empathy for others or not...
You know what, though? If FNAF wasn't predominantly a horror series, this story could have very easily taken a comedic turn. I kinda want to see a parody of this story where, instead of Monty killing Kane, the two form a compromise and learn how co-exist in the same brain and body.
One of my favorite parts about this story is Kane's presentation about the left side of the brain, and how if it's fed bad data - particularly by parents who don't know any better - it can cause that person to make bad choices without realizing it. Which, when you think about it, is exactly what happened to The Mimic. The Mimic used to be an innocent robot endoskeleton with learning AI, but because it kept learning bad things from Edwin Murray, William Afton, and even those workers who programmed it to tear the arms off of endoskeletons, The Mimic became destructive and harmful to everyone around it.
I'm saying The Mimic is the robotic equivalent of a child who had a very poor upbringing, and is now lashing out, not even aware that what he's doing is morally wrong. Or, if he does realize it, he simply doesn't care because hurting people was all he was ever taught.
EDIT: I want to add that there's a part where Monty describes Kane's girlfriend as having a zit on her nose "as big as Chica's cupcake". And I was like... her ACTUAL cupcake, or are you talking about Chica's butt? Does Glamrock Chica even have a booty?!
Another thing I found funny is that Monty at one point comments something along the lines of, "Who needs a girlfriend, anyway?" MONTY. MONTY, YOUR LOVE FOR MEN IS SHOWING. MONTY, YOU'RE BEING VERY GAY!

I've seen a lot of "scott snyder's court of owls batman arc isn't antisemitic because the jewish family we know (the Kanes) aren't in the court" opinions over the years, and quite frankly? I don't care and I don't buy it.
the court of owls is a comic book that lives in the world where every antisemitic conspiracy theory - the secret societies, the bloodlines and the families, the political influence, the international finance, the blood libel - is true, just "not done by (((them)))". It's a comic book that plays into the xenophobic horror of (white) christians, just tacks on an "oh and please don't think we're against the jews here, none of this was done by anyone jewish" at the end. it's a comic book that tries to engage in a "clean" version of antisemitism
gotham knights (the video game) picks up on the clear subtext (whether intentional or not) or a secret society of people in power dressing up as *owls* and stealing children for sacrifices, and simply forgets to add that last bit that tries to disavow the story's antisemitism, putting a jewish face on it all. just as the editors of DC fandom wikia picked up on the same subtext and described the court as a "cabal". it's an extension of the original story, not its opposition.

Dropping off a prompt or three
Ministry!Undertaker gets his ass kicked by Shawn.
Something bad happens to Shawn (no death) and the Undertaker loses it and Ministry!Undertaker makes an appearance and deals with it.
The nail salon techs never say a word when hot biker guy and his daughter show up and get matching pedicures.
So sorry this took so long. Like incredibly ridiculously long. And their all short. I kinda did prompts more than fics. Sorry I just wanted to get them out
1. Excuse me?
Shawn raises an eyebrow. What did this man just say?
The smirk slowly falls off ministry's face as he sees the look in the shorter man's eyes. "I...I didn't mean it?" Ministry questions as he steps back. Paul looks at Ministry confused. "You are stepping foot in my lockeroom where my kids are sleeping and you want to insult my husband? The husbands who's body you have stolen?" Shawn growls putting his hair up. "Wait wait I didnt mean it like that" Ministry protests. "What are you doing?!" Paul barks. "Taker is scared of him so it makes me!" Ministry protests. "Hes a smart man that's why" Shawn snaps. John holds a baby cassie close whilst Leon stops colouring to watch.
And both are glad they do.
Kane stands there confused as the shorter man punches ministry square in the nose.
Shawn hisses and shakes his hand as ministry's nose pops immediately, blood pouring out of it. "Fuck!" Ministry yelps holding his nose.
Paul raises an eyebrow. Shawn can hurt ministry? That's impossible.
"Shit" Shawn gasps cradling his hand to his chest. "You better get to stepping before I leave you black and blue" Shawn snarls at the taller man. Ministry straightens his back and looks at the blood pooling in his hands. Kane goes to step forward when ministry blocks him. "We do not have time. Leave it." He mutters.
Shawn watches as they storm out before he whimpers and looks down at his hand.
A bag of ice reaches into his view. He turns to see lil Leon holding it up. "Thanks peach" Shawn smiles accepting it. He fears this won't be his last confrontation with ministry. But it will be the last infront of his kids.
------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Guard dogs
"Dad!" John yells. Taker is up out his seat in a instant. He rushes to the younger man. "John? What's wrong?" Taker asks. John points at the screen.
Taker sees red.
Jericho and Christian have jumped Shawn in the car park.
John watches as takers eyes turn fully white, his whole aura changes. Its no longer taker, he knows that.
Ministry doesn't say a word as he turns and teleports away. John watches as the cameras suddenly go down and they are taken back to commentary. "Oh shit" John huffs.
He'd hate to be them right now.
Chris chuckles as shawn groans and tries to hide his face. "Not so touch now hey?" Christian smirks. "Ye-" "I don't know, are you?" A voice growls behind them. Both men slowly turn to see taker. "Taker!" Chris yelps as Ministry grabs them both by the throat. "You think this was a smart idea boys?" Ministry growls. Both men start protesting and trying to wiggle away. Ministry lifts them up and slams them into the concrete. "You messed with the wrong boy toy" Ministry growls before sinking to his knees beside Shawn.
"You good?" Ministry asks not wanting to touch the man. Shawn peaks at him. "Ministry?" "Yeah, taker will be back soon. Just wanted to make sure you're okay" Ministry huffs. "He will want to do some damage to them tho" Ministry adds. "Good. Thank you." Shawn whispers. "Anytime kid."
Shawn watches as takers eyes turn normal. "Are you alright?" Taker asks helping him sit up. "Yes, Thank you." Shawn nods. Taker looks at the out cold heels. "Those bastards" "I think you've already done enough. Cmon, help me to medic" Shawn huffs. "Yeah okay" Taker nods.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Ain't got a clue about nail stuff so...brrr
3. Daddy-Daughter time
"Daddy cmon!" Cassie whines tugging takers arm. Taker glances at the nail salon. "We are supposed to be buying stuff for Leon and John's party." Taker points out. "Please" she flashes her eyes at him. Taker sighs. "Fine." Taker leads the girl into the very quiet salon. He ignores the stares. "Can we have two pedicure please?" Cassie asks. Taker groans. "Of course. Follow me" the woman smiles.
--no idea--
Taker pays the woman and moves to the door. "We'll be back!" Cassie smiles, pulling taker out before he can protest.
And they did. They went back everytime they were in town. Even as they got older.
And the staff did not mind.
"See you later Cassie" Skylar calls as the slightly older girl drags her father out. "Hes still scary even as a biker." The old woman whispers. Skylar looks at the customer. "We will take no hot biker guy slander here." Skylar scolds. "Seriously?" "Yes seriously, he's hot and he's a dad. And that's a very happy little girl. So he's always welcomed here." Blair calls.

A Curse for True Love
A note: Apologies for the sudden onslaught of Evajacks posts. This is what happens when you discover a series so late in the game.
After waiting for it for 2 1/2 weeks, I finally got to read A Curse for True Love. I have to spill all the feels I am feeling over this series, because they are many.
While not as good as BONA, there is still some really good material. This love story is one of the best that you can get from books that resemble fairytales. There is something so profound about it, and deep. I mean, you have the fact that you get both Evangeline and Jacks being victims of curses and danger. It was a true fight for true love. It reminded of some of my favorite fictional couples.
For the cursed angle, it was giving Captain Swan (but done better...yeah, I said it), as well as Snowing. With Jacks pushing Evangeline away to keep her safe from him, it was very similar to Dimitri pushing Rose away in Spirit Bound and Last Sacrifice, which I love. Let me add, Jacks watching Evangeline and longing from afar was reminiscent of Peter watching Mary Jane after being rescued in SM2, and the ending scene of the CW BatB pilot. I need more literature like that.
I just love the simplicity of this series. It's so straightforward; nothing convoluted like you see in certain romantasies. And I believe I saw a booktuber (at least I think it was this series) say that the stakes are more realistic and higher**, which I have to agree with. You have the FMC trying to find a second love she can be happy with, seemingly finds it, then becomes enamored with the MMC. She knows that he is unable to be with her, but is determined to find a way to be with him. With the MMC, he's wanted love, thought he found it, but she backstabbed him. Now he's bitter, and does nefarious things. However, he slowly falls for the FMC unexpectedly, but doesn't want to hurt her, thus pushing her away. It all changes when she is killed, and he goes back in time to fix it because of how much he loves her. But it all goes wrong when the FMC's false love takes her memories. Fast forward to MMC trying to thwart the husband, or any way FMC may be endangered, trying to protect her so she can live. However, he is going to make sure he doesn't try to interact with her too much, and makes plans to disappear from her life forever. It hurts him immensely, but, like before, feels he has to. She regains her memories, discovers his plans, and she has a race against time before he destroys the thing that allows him to love. There is lots of begging, confessions, pushing/pulling, and the like. She makes a move and BAM! Curse lifted. Only, after all of that, the false love kidnaps her and MMC has to still fight to be with her. Totally no big deal, right? LOL.
What I liked about the curse breaking is that they both had to believe in their love. At first I was confused as to why the cuff hurt him when Jacks tried to kiss Evangeline, but it's because that his second heart isn't in close proximity, so, he wasn't in his right mind. He probably didn't think she loved him the way he loved her. Subconsciously he likely did, yet it wasn't until she said those words and risked her life to physically show him.
Anyway, my whole point is this: Evajacks has now topped Feysand within my top 3 book OTPs in terms of overcoming odds and development. Seriously, the guy was going to destroy his ability to feel because he couldn't bear losing her again...at his hand. That is real sacrifice. What Rhysand did pales in comparison.
Anyway, here's my top 10 book couples.
Top 10 Book OTPs:
Romitri***-Vampire Academy
Haven and Stolas-Kingdom of Runes
Evajacks-Once Upon a Broken
Feysand-A Court of Thorns and Roses
Chaolaena (so fight me)-Throne of Glass
Warnette (gosh, this was hard to place so low)-Shatter Me
Kane and Arwen-A Dawn of Onyx
Jurdan-The Cruel Prince
Mac and Jericho-Fever series
Sera and Ash (would have been higher if not for Fire in the Flesh)-Flesh and Fire
**Edit: Okay, I lied; it was a different book. But, the belief still stands. Also, unlike the booktuber, I don't see this as a guilty-pleasure series
***Romitri is the first book couple I fell in love with. They have to be number one, no matter how I feel about the others.

OFC!! This took a while D: finals are coming up and my teachers are working me to the bone. I did an info dump on the bros a bit ago so I’m just going to add on. Prep for finals is murdering me tbh
cal drives him and his brother home and the car ride is just. really quiet. Oliver doesn't really know what to say and cal just looks like he's going to throw up the entire time. they stop at a gas station where cal wordlessly tosses olly a change of clothes from the trunk and gestures to the bathroom while still looking vaguely ill. they get home and Oliver brushes off his parents with an excuse because he doesn't want to explain anything at the moment.
he takes a long shower, then collapses into bed, thinking hard about what had happened. his injuries are healed -- something he didnt notice until he got home and he feels relatively fine despite spending hours in what he thought was acid. he begisn to form his own conclusions.
Meanwhile, cal sits down in the kitchen with Ethel and Kane and just spills. everything. his hands are trembling, he can't look up at them, and it takes him a while to get through it all. he expects them to grab a gun and level it at his head or something because he's a monster.
they don't. instead they look at him for a long while, go to their room to talk for a couple of hours before coming out. they thank him for saving olly and cal just wants to rip his skin off. he's a monster, why can't they see that? he doesn't deserve having people who are so kind and forgiving and understanding loving him, he's not worthy enough to be their son.
they're an old couple, and they've lived in this town long enough to know that there are some super natural elements to their environment. Oliver tries to talk to cal in the next few days but cal just stays silent most of the time, thinking.
then, in the middle of the night, he leaves. takes all of his important belongings, some clothes, and necessities and packs it all up in his car. no note or anything regarding his disappearance. he goes to his parent's room to say goodbye, then does the same for Oliver.
he's say goodbye before leaving for good, but Oliver wakes up first. they talk, it turns into an argument about cal running away, cal finally breaking down and telling Oliver that he's terrified that the whole "cannibalism" thing will happen again and while Oliver was fine the first time, it might not be the case for the potential next. he feels like he doesn't know himself or what he could do and the thought of hurting someone makes him feel sick to his stomach.
Oliver protests by saying that he was safe, his injuries were even healed up inside. callisto reluctantly tells Oliver that he will come back eventually but he still feels the need to leave to at least try to figure out what all of this means. Oliver forces him to promise and he agrees.
btw this is what Oliver saw when callisto was being all aggro:
