Regulus wasn't forced by his parents to join the Death Eaters

What do we know about the Black family? I'll write a post about this because there's quite a bit we know if we read the canon in depth.

But the main point for this post is that for the Blacks, the survival and prosperity of their lineage were critically important.

The survival of their surname was in a precarious state at that time because women did not keep their surname nor pass it on to their children. Only two people could continue the line – Sirius and Regulus.

Preserving their lineage was so crucial for the Blacks that they didn't officially disown Sirius after his escape, or they reinstated him after Regulus's death. Because Sirius was the last Black. The last one who could carry on their line. Even if he was a rebellious Gryffindor who liked "mudbloods," he was still a Black.

When Sirius died, even the portrait was upset, although it's not alive. It's simply a reflection of the Blacks' attitude towards the survival of their lineage.

Am I to understand,’ said Phineas Nigellus slowly from Harry’s left, ‘that my great-great-grandson – the last of the Blacks – is dead?’

‘Yes, Phineas,’ said Dumbledore. ‘I don’t believe it,’ said Phineas brusquely. Harry turned his head in time to see Phineas marching out of his portrait and knew that he had gone to visit his other painting in Grimmauld Place. He would walk, perhaps, from portrait to portrait, calling for Sirius through the house ...

By the time Regulus was 16, Sirius had already run away from home.

Now, explain to me, all you fans of the "Regulus was forced" idea, what would be going through Orion and Walburga's heads to make them push their last hope for the continuation of their lineage into joining a combat organization where people are constantly being killed?

Considering they didn't join themselves because they disliked the methods and probably understood Tom's real goals.

Walburga was in school with Tom Riddle and was two years older than him. Orion Black was also in school with Tom, but he was two years younger. By that time, Tom Riddle aka Voldemort, hadn't yet changed his appearance to the point of being unrecognizable. They all knew who Voldemort was. Tom Riddle. An orphan boy. Likely, they knew he was the heir of Slytherin, which was important for the Blacks because, for them, it wasn't about money but about blood. True nobility and dignity are in the blood, not wealth. The Blacks aren't the Malfoys. And as Sirius said, at some point, they were inspired by Tom's ambition to change the situation in their country, although Sirius obviously knew very little about Voldemort, as he was hardly discussed in front of the children. But initially, the Blacks were inspired because he was worthy, the heir of Slytherin, right?

Probably Orion, Arcturus/Pollux realized that Tom didn't care about blood purity. He cared about his own power. By the time they understood this, Tom's power was already too strong, and he had won much support among the pure-blood society, who believed he genuinely cared about pure-blood wizards.

Why did Sirius say he was sure their parents were proud of Regulus?

Because most likely, not both parents were proud, as Sirius doesn't mention the father at all, and Walburga had an irrational desire to see her son as a hero. Sirius – the lineage's continuer, and Regulus – a brave and courageous warrior for blood purity. Because being a Death Eater was seen as brave and cool. They were revolutionaries. Chosen warriors.

Moreover, Bella was already in the organization and could influence Walburga's opinion against Orion and Arcturus's wishes. Playing on Walburga's emotional irrationality wasn't very hard, especially for Bella and Rodolphus.

Bella was in love with Voldemort. Rodolphus was devoted to Voldemort from the start, as Lestrange Sr. had been a supporter of Tom since their school days. The Rosiers fall into the same group. Surprise, surprise, Bella's mother – Druella Rosier, was likely the sister of that very Rosier who was with Tom from the start and who was Evan Rosier's father. Cygnus Black is open for interpretation, but my headcanon is that from a young age, he was a bit more aggressive than the others and didn't quite fit into the family dynamics and control (and Bella took after him in part).

Who convinced Regulus to join the organization, even knowing Orion and the Blacks were against it?

From the little we know about Regulus, it's clear he was a maximalist inclined to broad "heroic" actions, with his own understanding of honor. He had been committed to the idea of blood purity from childhood, believing it to be truly noble and important. He wanted to be a hero and admired Voldemort. Also, always being second to Sirius, he wanted to prove his worth. That he too was strong and brave and capable of significant, but correct actions. And, our beloved Bella was there. She helped him join the organization at 16.

If you want tragedy in Regulus Black's story, here it is:

Regulus Black went to his death knowing he was the last of the Blacks. He destroyed his family. His lineage. Put an end to it. Even for Sirius, running away was easier because Regulus was still there. When Regulus went to his death, Sirius had already run away from home.

There's much more interesting stuff here than "Regulus was forced." But who cares, right? Fuck canon, live fanon.

one tomarry trope i like more than harry travelling back in time is when tom travels forward in time. preferably with several of his schoolmates like walburga, abraxas, orion, alphard, lestrange.. etc. oh, the drama hits. like can you imagine walburga travelling forward in time and meeting sirius, whos stuck in grimmauld after being wrongfully convicted as a war criminal? ugh, perfect.

abraxas sneering at draco, orion and wally fighting so much sirius is so done with their bullshit. alphard just.. being there.

walburga coming across her own portrait in grimmauld 😭 naturally, chaos ensues. walburga screaming at sirius and the portrait of future her joins in as well

tom seeing voldemort, but instead of being disgusted like the usual trope, he’s in awe, he loves his new visage, slits for nostrils and all (he just wishes future him has a bit more sanity)

harry losing his temper, and being like, ‘i hate you. you killed my parents!’ and tom’s in the room, surrounded by his schoolmates whom he finds out he had killed in the future: ‘i ended up killing almost everyone in this room, your parents aren’t special’

tom easily dominating and entirely sweeping the floor with harry in a duel. best trope.

dumbledore now having to deal with not one but TWO tom riddles.. UGH so good. tom getting annoyed at harry and strangling him with his bare hands. and harry’s like: ‘voldemort almost choked me to death. you know how it is’ when asked.

walburga disgusted at tom for killing off her future son and the major fight that ensues. hermione trying to see how smart tom really is, and being completely stumped, because in addition to all the knowledge she has, he is extremely competent at dark and blood magic, which she isn’t.

tom now wielding immunity in the form of voldemort’s protection and trying to kill walburga when she calls him mudblood. tom telling abraxas lucius is hotter than him.

tom and voldemort having a mental link so that voldemort’s memories come trickling into tom’s brain, until he just decides to do a ritual so that voldemort gets his sanity and human body back.

To tell you the truth I started reading this request, joy filled because of the ego pumping (thank you for that btw it's much appreciated) and then I actually laughed out loud (cackled) because come on!!!!!! A little bit ish part 2 to Kings Cross.

Birds Eye View (1/1) (jegulus | post-jegulus Harry)

James and Regulus don't always watch from above, but they have never watched over their son more in these past few months. They know their son didn't start it, didn't want it, but ultimately they knew he was destined to end it.

So they watch, together, always hovering within inches of each other. They get to be close here, now. So nothing stops them.

They are glued to Harry's every movement, focused since they sent him back to reality. To live, to fight or flee it didn't matter, but they both knew it wasn't his time just yet.

James and Regulus hold a shared breath and Harry' consciousness wakes up in his rightful place.

"Is that little shit pretending to be dead still?" Regulus huffed as he watched his cousin move to check on Harry.

"Reg, you can't call him that," James said but he was laughing.

"I can when he's acting like it! I just told him that I didn't want him back here until he was older than Dumbledore. You heard me say it right? You really think Narcissa Malfoy is about save my son? MY BOY? God why does it always come down to the love of a Black that none of us have," Regulus rolled his eyes but began to pace anxiously.

James reached out to put an arm around him. "Regulus, darling, you can't pretend that you don't know how to love anymore. You haven't been able to for 17 years now because you actually died out of love that was so strong he lived," James said.

"Oh don't you start with me-," Regulus began. He froze and his eyes went wide. James doing the same thing. "What did she just say?" Regulus asked, stunned.

"I think she said he's dead... why would she say that?" James questioned.

"Oh no, no no no, he got my planning stupidity too didn't he," Regulus muttered.

"Oh so I can't bring up love but you get to bring up the cave? Come on Reg, give him more credit than that." James chastised but the fondness was clear.

Regulus sighed and took James hands. They continued to watch the battle unfold, but now it was just a procession, led by Voldemort toward the castle.

"Of course Tom is going to do a speech," Regulus remarked. If James didn't know better, he would be concerned that Regulus' eyes were about to roll right out of his head. James squeezed Regulus a little tighter.

After a few moments of silence between them, Regulus laid his head on James' shoulder.

"What if he actually dies James? He deserves so much more than this... so much more than the life Dumbledore decided for him," Regulus spoke, his voice soft and aching for the destiny his son was bound to fulfill.

"Well, he will have done everything he could. And we will love him here, and be proud of him here. I know, though I do. I want him to have time, time to grow and love and move forward, time we didn't get, time to be Harry... just Harry." James whispered back.

He pressed a kiss to Regulus' cheek but then was quickly smacked on the arm. And then again and again. "Ow Regulus why are you-" he started, and then realized that Harry had just jumped from Hagrid's arms.

"Oh that little bugger," James chortled shaking his head.

Regulus gripped James' arms. Nails digging in but James didn't mind. It's not like it would hurt him much here anyway.

"He's actually going to do it, oh Merlin," Regulus muttered, mostly to himself. Keeping hope alive within him.

And well, there was only silent but happy tears that rolled down their faces as they watched their son walk away from Hogwarts. Walk away from a fight he never should have had to fight. From a fight he was always going to fight. And one in which they were glad he was able to fight better than them.

James breathed finally, and whispered right into Regulus ear as he kept him tight in his arms from behind. "Lots more time Reg. He's getting lots more time..."

Ooh the good old Voldemort raising Harry trope! 10/10 because it can be crack or angsty as all hell! Even just a friendship would be hilarious to me.

Like, say we do a same-era story, where Tom is the perfect Slytherin student and Harry is the golden boy of Gryffindor. Tom is prim and proper and polite, whereas Harry is rough and roguish and relaxed.

They’re polar opposites in temperament and attitude, and you’d think that that would mean they’d hate each other - but they…don’t??? Tom and Harry get along extremely well, and there’s a lot of respect between them?? Harry is the only one that can get away with being rude to Tom, and Tom is the only one Harry really stops and listens to.

No one knows where this friendship sprung from and half the schools think they’re fucking but they’re not and no one knows what’s happening?????

Harry openly calls Tom his best friend and Tom doesn’t correct him. Tom seeks out Harry’s company and doesn’t treat it like a transaction where he wants something out of it.

And this freaky friendship carries over into the war much to everyone’s confusion.

Tom is Dark Lording his way across Britain. Harry is a top-tier auror. And yet they still hang out casually sometimes and just talk???

Dumbledore keeps trying to pressure Harry into taking down Tom, but Harry is like “I’m chasing the Dark Lord Voldemort not my buddy Tom Riddle” (he absolutely knows who Tom is but there’s no evidence so he can’t just arrest him)

Tom’s followers awkwardly fight around Harry because they don’t actually know what their Lord would do if they hurt his apparent best friend.

Tom and Harry get into debates all the time with each other, and have only had One serious fight between them in the decade they’ve known each other. No one knows the details of their relationship and at this point they’re too scared to say anything.

Their friendship just boggles people.

I have added a lot of the fics that you recommended on your latest answer to my 'Marked for Later' list on a03 to enjoy over the weekend. I was wondering your honest thoughts are on the following ships: Tom/Ron, James/Snape, Tom/Hermione, Molly/Bellatrix, James/Regulus and Snape/Lily and Dudley/Draco. I apologise for the number of ships and I am really curious on your opinions.

[i know you sent a message apologising for sending some ships which were asked before, but i love to chatter, so i'm going in to answer the original...]

tom riddle | voldemort/ron weasley

obviously this is the crack pairing when it comes to voldemort + a member of the trio - while tomarrymort and tomione/volmione stories number into the thousands on ao3, voln/ton/rom/ronmort/whatever we're calling it has a grand total of... ten tagged works.

i think this is a tremendous shame, but not - it's important to say - because i agree with the tedious fanon idea, particularly prevalent in ships which feature hermione with anyone else, that ron would make a good death eater [as you will see below, i think that honour belongs firmly to hermione herself...] - even in a voldemort wins au, ron isn't going over to the dark side. it sounds too much like hard work.

instead, i'm into this pairing because ron is... kind of mother. he likes to look after people and he channels his negative emotions into doing this [he wouldn't have left the tent if harry and hermione had learned how to shoplift properly and he could be settled in front of a nice pot, i'll die on that hill]. just imagine little captive ron - maybe the snatchers recognised him, maybe voldemort's won and everyone else is dead - bustling around his gilded prison in malfoy manor making the dark lord a cup of tea when he turns up to psychologically torture him. voldemort would - as i am - be intrigued.

and if, in fact, you'd like to see almost exactly this situation play out, you will definitely enjoy wind tunnels by @mrmxlemons. ron isn't having a good time, but his cooking is.

james potter/severus snape

i've not read much snames, so this is mostly just based on general vibes: i think it's fine but not fantastic.

as i've said in literally everything i've ever posted about sirius black/severus snape, snack is a great pairing because they're narrative mirrors, something which creates so much drama that it makes me scream.

severus and james don't have this - if anything, they're narrative opposites. james is adored by his parents, he's rich, he gets the girl, his best friend is in love with him and not the other way round, he's the ringleader of his gang rather than a follower, his whole family have been gryffindors, and so on and so forth. obviously opposites attract, but you haven't got the immediate potential for connection that you have between severus and characters such as sirius, lily, and - let's all be real - voldemort.

i'm not really going to get into the bullying debate here, but it seems to me that severus would regard james - had he lived - in a similar way to how he regards the adult lupin; that is, that he would completely disassociate from any situation in which he's present, rather than love getting in his face as he does with sirius. i don't love snupin for this reason [i'll read it, of course, but it always feels extremely ooc to me] - the fissure caused by their conflicting personalities simply runs too deep, and my suspicion is that snames is the same.

hermione granger/tom riddle | voldemort

so, this is the one where I think I'm likely to deviate most significantly from the opinions of my dash...

i think it's entirely plausible, but only from hermione's side.

the argument i've seen most against tomione/volmione is that hermione's moral code would never permit her to accept anything less than a voldemort who was transformed into a man she would want - which means the whole murder thing needs to get thrown in the bin.

i... disagree. the canonical hermione is someone who is very morally inflexible in relation to how she expects others to behave, but incredibly morally flexible - and often quite immoral - in pursuit of things she herself wants or thinks she wants. she is also the cruelest and most ruthless member of the trio. she thinks herself rational and would - therefore - be the easiest for anyone cleverer than rita skeeter to manipulate. she is very lonely, and would, in a situation in which she was captured, be the member of the trio most swayed by basic demonstrations of kindness [lord voldemort only needs to endure a brief conversation about hogwarts: a history and hint that harry and ron aren't coming to look for her and he's golden]. she always thinks she's right - if she's convinced just by harry and ron not telling her otherwise that her knitted hats are freeing house elves in their droves, i am certain she could be convinced that she won concessions for muggleborns under voldemort's regime through her own skill and not because he wanted to grant them anyway. and so on.

whether the relationship is something she has to do or wants to do, i think she'd be able to justify it to herself as a necessary evil which doesn't actually go against her standards for herself. that she would never think this for harry and ron if they shacked up with the dark lord is part of the fun...

from voldemort's perspective, while he definitely has a weakness for dark curly hair [bellamort nation, rise up], i cannot see him going for it as anything other than a tool of psychological warfare [whereas i think you can write e.g. tomarry based very much in mutual attraction]. intellectually, while hermione is very clever, she doesn't have the interest in experimentation which voldemort has [this is why snapemort and riddledore both always slap - they have the same views on magic], she's extremely condescending, which is his thing, she obviously grew up incredibly rich, and her dour, whiggish empiricism doesn't align very well with his late-antique-emperor's view of the world.

she doesn't give a shit about dead rabbits though. maybe they could bond over that.

bellatrix lestrange/molly weasley

yeah why not. they canonically went to hogwarts at the same time and bellatrix is definitely giving off jilted ex vibes in that final duel.

would molly put up with bella's nonsense? absolutely not. bellatrix would have exactly the same reaction as fleur to the burrow - nothing to do except cooking and chickens - and the ensuing argument would burn the place to the ground far more interestingly than that dogshit scene in the half-blood prince film.

regulus black/james potter

lily evans/severus snape

as i said here, i'm into it in a post-james world where lily is trying to rebuild her life by connecting with her past.

so let's take it from a different angle: do i think it could work in the pre-james era?

absolutely not. i think these two need something as seismic as catastrophic loss to force them to actually engage with each other as they are, rather than as the versions they've constructed in their heads. at school, where they're both just dancing round each other, never seeing eye-to-eye on anything, they're never going to be able to get to that place.

i also think james needs to be out of the picture - she's clearly into him long before the mudblood incident, and that knowledge would only ever make severus astonishingly unpleasant to have as a boyfriend. rip king, but you were lost in service of shipping.

dudley dursley/draco malfoy

yeah it's hot. boxer!dudley is enormous and ripped, what's not to love. draco deserves a huge boy who also hates harry.

plus imagine narcissa vs petunia on the topic of their darling boys. or lucius vs vernon when the former pulls up to privet drive in a flying rolls royce. i would be seated.

Random Bellatrix headcanons, GO!

Hiii, anon! Why, thank you, I missed the headcanon asks!

Kills many of Rodolphus's mistresses (@rodolphus-lestrangex put me onto this; now I write it everywhere). He pretends not to notice.

Actually a few months older than Rodolphus. She sounds like Scorpio to me: determined, passionate, intense, mysterious, and fiercely loyal, so I hc that she was born on October 27th, 1951. To make them peers he must have been born between Sep 1st, 1951 and Aug 31st, 1952. I headcanon him as a Taurus (reliable, practical, stubborn, grounded), so he was born in April/May 1952.

Picked her own husband. She didn't want to get married, but she had to take a pureblood husband because it was expected of her, so she chose a rich, powerful wizard, devoted to the Cause.

Holds her alcohol very well. (The Dark Lord does not)

Smells like rose, jasmine, and fragrant wood.

They had a little quintet thing going on in the first war: her, Rodolphus, Rabastan, Dolohov, and Barty (during the last year of the war). Voldemort's bloodiest and boldest. That's who took down the Prewett brothers in an absolutely epic battle. That's who slaughtered the Bones.

Seven N.E.WT.S., all with top marks except Arithmancy (yes, this is about my hatred for math, thank you for noticing!). These were: Potions, Charms, DADA, Astronomy, Ancient Runes, Transfiguration and Arithmancy.

One of her few regrets was not travelling more, not seeing the world beyond Britain.

Doesn't get along with the in-laws.

Calls her mother Druella.

Found out on her own both about the Horcruxes and Tom Riddle's blood status. The latter one, he confessed to her. The former one, he never knew she knew.

Didn't have many female friends. Didn't have many friends at all, actually. I see her as someone who was very lonely for the majority of her life (she played with her sisters and cousins as a child, didn't have any need for other company, went to school and focused exclusively on her grades, got really into domestic terrorism at age 20, spent her time training with a megalomaniacal psychopath as a young adult). Most of her company was her husband and brother-in-law, her books and the annoying new recruits that came along towards the end of the first war (Barty, Snape, Regulus) and whose training she partly supervised (not so much with Snape, but def the other two).

Has a marvellous collection of Persian cursed daggers. I also have a whole story about how she acquired them.

Has a Magic Mirror (yes, really). He's unhelpful and super-bitchy, though, and constantly intervenes in her and Rodolphus' arguments.

The Forgotten Son

Albus Dumbledore was a good man, he was sure of it. He was a great man, in fact, with a solid plan for the greater good. A false prophecy, a few (technical) assassinations, and faking the death of the Boy-Who-Lived’s brother were just a few of the things he had to do to ensure the victory of the Light and the eventual defeat of Lord Voldemort. No war came without sacrifices, of course, and he was more than prepared to make them.

After accidentally killing his muggle uncle, Hadrian Cygnus Potter-Black finds out who he really is, rejoins the Wizarding World as a member of the Ancient and Most Noble House of Black, frees his godfather from Azkaban, and decides that if Dumbledore has a plan for the Light to prevail- then he will snub out the Light and leave darkness in its place.

Soul-Mate Identifying Words AU: "I always knew you were meant to be a Slytherin. How did you fool the Hat?" Everyone got their Soulmate marks from the minute they were born. Regulus should have been happy to not be one of the rare people who wasn't born with a soul mark, but with the conspicuous marking on the side of his arm, equal parts salvation and damnation, he couldn't help but wish he was born without one.

Harry really didn't expect fourth year would turn out like this. His godfather on the run, unwillingly being entered into a death tournament, and most importantly, Draco fucking Malfoy speaking French. That, more than anything else, was driving him slowly mad. inspired by the tumblr post: goblet of fire au where draco talks to all the beauxbatons girls in fluent french and that’s the story of how harry potter lost his fucking mind

the dumb, the wild, the free (Harry/Draco)

It all started when Draco had the brilliant idea of flirting with Harry fucking Potter. Or more accurately, when he went to a summer camp for two weeks, his parents apparently determined to make him realize that he needed to survive on his own, especially since the whispers that the Dark Lord would rise had become louder and louder (Written as a prequel to I wish (I found love), but can be read as a stand-alone)

knew nothing of romance (love at second sight) (Harry/Tom) (one of my favourites!!!) (tomarry and more supernatural elements??)

Something about the forest had called to Harry ever since he had been two, him always going to the edge of the forest by himself until his parents or big brother caught him. Each of those moments, he wondered why his Mama and Papa had such odd looks on their faces, or why his brother treated him as if he would break afterward. For now, he followed the strange sensation that let him know he was going the right way, a soft tug that was comfortable and slightly hungry, though he didn't know how or why. There was a strange boy in the woods that only ever approached Harry, no one else. And there was also the matter of the lightning-bolt-shaped scar on Harry's forehead.

Tom Riddle hadn't meant to fall in love. It hadn't really been a conscious decision—after he had seen how destructive the love - if he could call it that - between his parents had been, and how both his parents hadn't come out of it the same people they had been, he had sworn never to fall in love.

When Remus asked Sirius to be his fake-date for them to visit his parents for the Christmas holidays, he hadn't expected it to go that well, not really. No one, least of all Remus, could have predicted how rapidly it deteriorated, especially with his long-hidden feelings that were too close to the surface.Wake Up and Notice (You're Someone You're Not) (Harry/Draco) (Unfinished and Discontinued) Draco Malfoy really didn't expect his fourth year to go like this. First, the Dark Lord comes to the Malfoy Manor, giving him no privacy and traumatic memories to last a lifetime. And now, Potter, of all people, wants to be friends with him. Voldemort, instead of going to Riddle Manor during 1994, goes to the Malfoy Manor instead. Draco or his family were never equipped to handle him in the first place. And Harry could never resist his saving people thing.

505 (Remus/Sirius)

The Hanahaki Disease, it read, is a curse that would cause its victims to discharge flowers through their mouth in the presence and when thinking of someone they love romantically, and who they believe would never be able to return their feelings. While this curse may not seem harmful at first, if left untreated, the afflicted would be forced to give up their life to the curse due to blood loss and suffocation through how the vines wrap around the victims' heart. Sirius had known this since he was eleven, eagerly expecting Hogwarts. He just hadn’t expected Remus to consume his life so utterly.

In Dreams We Speak (Tom/Harry) (The Sandman Crossover) (The sandman and tomarry, two of my favourite things)

The story of how Harry dies in the hands of Voldemort have always been set in stone. He must either die, or come back to his own life, and make of that what he will. But this time, he gets another choice: to stay and rule with Tom Marvolo Riddle, the new Dream king, who would do anything within his grasp to have Harry by his side.

could we pretend (this won't end?)

For the Prompt: Set after Deathly Hallows, ignoring the epilogue, and with Regulus already out of Hogwarts: Regulus knows better than to mess with objects in Grimmauld Place, but he has been brewing over books on Horcruxes for hours and didn't pay attention. There's a lurch and a lot of dizziness, and suddenly Grimmauld Place looks like it hasn't seen a living person in decades. There is a boy of Regulus' age though, looking exactly as exhausted and done with the world as Regulus feels. Regulus survived the cave filled with Inferi. Sometimes - like when he's hurled through time into a future that is incredibly different from his own - he couldn't help but wish he didn't.

Ending Doesn't Sound (Like the Happiest Around) (Gen)

Harry dies in the Forbidden Forest. Now his soul is stuck; he is merely a ghost, having to watch as his friends and loved ones move on without him, living the lives he didn't get a chance to, and eventually, his name becoming but a distant memory.| Avada kedavra. It was ironic, wasn't it, that the last words he expected to hear had merely only been the beginning?

On my mind girl (like a drug) (Luna/Ginny, Harry/Draco)

Ginny didn't know when her feelings for Luna became entirely non-platonic. She supposed it had been coming all along, and she, in true Weasley fashion, hadn't realized until it was right in her face.

Summertime (Remus/Sirius)

Sirius remembered when he had first met Remus; this vulnerable and precious boy who had kept catching Sirius’s eyes like no one else. Catra, surprisingly, had been the first one to suggest it. She had found herself suggesting going as Adora's date, knowing that other than Adora having a girlfriend, Adora with Catra as her girlfriend would be Adora's mother's worst fear personified. It was the perfect plan. Too bad it derailed fairly quickly.

Okay but speaking of the "parents" generation - aren't Walburga, Lyall Lupin and Tom Riddle all around the same years at Hogwarts? Walburga and Tom were only one year apart if I'm not mistaken, both in Slytherin, and Lyall was only a few years older than them - and considering that he was a ranveclaw and a pure-blood, I can imagine he was pretty well-respected before he married a muggle. Do you think they knew each other? Do you have any hcs on that?

I definitely think they all knew each other. Re: Walburga and Orion being in Tom's house, I have loads of thoughts.

From canon, we know that at school, Tom sets up a form of proto-death eaters called the 'Knights of Walpurgis.' But we don't hear that any Black family members are involved in this gang (Alphard, Cygnus, and Lucretia would have also been at Hogwarts at the same time). So Sirius is correct when he says that his parents weren't Deatheaters, nor were they ever directly Voldemort followers (although they thought he had the right idea). Especially as they were positioned to get involved in Tom's activity early. Which adds to my theory that Regulus joined of his own volition.

I think the Black siblings and cousins kept to themselves, which laid the foundation for Walburga and Orions' marriage. I think they were each others' choice and them actually loving each other (albeit in a repressed, dysfunctional way) is interesting to explore imo.

Brain full of worms about an AU in which Regulus does not immediately jump to 'time to kill myself for the honour of my house elf' after figuring out about the horcrux, and instead devotes himself to being his own secret little spy, learning as much as he can about it/if there are more/how to destroy them before he does anything risky.

And he figures out that there are probably seven, or at least that that's what Voldemort intends, and he has a half-finished list of possible items they could be attached to/deaths Voldemort may have used to create them and he's really getting somewhere, for the first time in years he's a little hopeful about the future.

And he's been going on DE information gathering missions and has been watering down and minimising every piece of information he takes back, because if he openly fights Voldemort he'll end up dead and no one will know about the horcruxes or be able to stop them, but what he can do is slow things down, and manipulate the situation to keep innocent people alive, so there's still something left when he knows how to finish off Voldemort once and for all.

And he's depressed and falling apart and none of his manipulations feel like enough when people are still dying, and he's been that teenage boy who was ready to die alone and unmourned for such a long time - when Voldemort calls his inner circle, and all the Marked members of the House of Black, to a meeting in Malfoy Manor.

And Narcissa is sat beside him, hand holding his tightly, when on October 30th, 1981, Voldemort tells them that the war will be won tomorrow: because the Potters' Secret Keeper has given them up, and tomorrow night he's going to kill them.

And something in Regulus just shatters, just can't take it any more, fully breaks apart under the weight of the gleeful way Voldemort has just talked about killing a baby.

And for a moment, he blacks out.

When he comes to, Narcissa has immobilised or stunned - or killed, because its Narcissa - everyone else in the room that's not her husband or her baby cousin, and Regulus has one of the big, ornate silver steak knives from the Malfoys' best place settings clutched in his hand, and is straddling Tom Riddle's corpse where he'd thrown himself across the table and shoved the knife through his eye.

Because he was ready to suffer through the long game if it meant that in the end, Voldemort was gone for good: but he couldn't comprehend the idea of living in a world without James Potter somewhere in it, least of all letting Voldemort kill him.

(Because Blacks are possessive, and James is Sirius', was Regulus' for a little while, and like hell was he going to let Voldemort touch him.)
