my desire to see more characters try to self-destruct by vomiting up a deluge of the most damning lies about themselves in a fit of despair and loathing and desire to be punished in some way vs. my knowledge that at least some audiences would take their words at face value and metatextually respond exactly the way they're hoping for

What if... What if the worst thing that can happen to the brothers, is the day one of them isn't hurt by their words anymore?
What if regulus calls sirius a blood traitor and sirius walks right past him?
What if sirius calls regulus a death eater wannabe and regulus merely laughs at him with his friends?
What if... What if the brothers are grasping at straws the same way their parents do. It's not so much about the reassurance of if they still love each other, but if they can still hurt the other. And it's not power they're looking for. They're just looking for signs that they still matter.
Only, however, to hold this over their brother's head. See! See how much i can hurt you. How dare you leave me. I'll haunt you. I'm your ghost, I'm your shadow — I'm your brother.
Until none of that is true anymore and they're left looking at the wreckage of their relationship.
Someone will ask Sirius if he's afraid of ghosts, and he won't be able to answer. He mourns his ghost.
But that's the point, isn't it? That's the reason they get so nasty. The pull on every intimate detail they know about each other to be progressively crueller, and more unfeeling, and say the absolute worst things they can to one another, because- because they don't want to care any more.
Regulus is safer back home if he doesn't care about Sirius any more. Sirius will be less tempted to throw himself back in the fire is his love for Regulus is no longer hanging around he neck like a weight. And the way they grew up, well; they have a keen appreciation for the fact that bones once broken heal stronger. That scars are more durable than regular skin.
They push and push and push with a desperation to cross that line, because as far as they're concerned, the one thing that will ensure the other is truly safe is for them to stop caring.
It's bad enough when one of them is successful on their end. Regulus snaps out something nasty and cutting at Sirius, something that two days ago would have incited him into trying to start an actual fist fight with him, and Sirius just rolls his eyes and walks away without responding; and before any sense of satisfaction comes, Regulus is almost bowled over with grief at it being over.
It's worse being on the other end, though. Sirius returns to Gryffindor tower, and he wedges himself into a corner of his room to have a panic attack, because he felt nothing, and he can't stand it. That's his little brother, and he felt nothing? The self loathing is just barely beat out by the utter terror at the thought he doesn't care any more.
(Of course words don't mean much, in the long run; because the second either one of them is hurt, the other comes running. Neither of them are that easy to get rid of.)

wait u r having Anakin thoughts ... what r ur feelings on Anakin and obi- wan and anakinandobiwan, THEE ultimate doomed brothers of all time
Unhinged thoughts! Obsessed insane unhinged thoughts are what I have for those two! And yknow the Obi-wan Kenobi show only made it worse BC what do you MEAN Skyguy is out here both breaking Obi-wan's heart telling him Anakin is gone but at the same time ABSOLVING HIM OF GUILT by telling him he didn't kill him, and instead he did it to himself, thus proving Anakin isn't gone at all!!!!!!!!!
Don't mind me I am Clawing At The Walls.

Our fandom forbearers did NOT suffer through Anne Rice, strikethrough, and other bullshit for fucking ACOTAR and Harry Potter fans to fucking ruin it for all of us by selling fanfiction. I am not losing novel length yaoi epics because some of you don't know how to act in fannish spaces and yes I do blame the booktokification of fanfic but I also blame those of you that treat fandom like content to consume and not a community to engage with.

James and Peter childhood friends off-shoot where after a miserable first year watching James latch onto Sirius and leave him behind, at the start of second year, Peter makes best friends with Sirius' little brother.
Sure, a decent chunk of the motivation there is spite, because it puts the most excellent pinched expression on Sirius' face, and James can't say anything about it without proving that Sirius is his favourite, despite the summer of denials that he's leaving Peter behind; but Regulus knows it's spiteful from the start.
Little eleven year old Regulus appreciates Peter being honest with him. He's honest in return, when he tells him he only first entertained his attempts to befriend him for the same reason; to lash out at Sirius after all the awful things he said to him after he was sorted into Slytherin.
Their friendship quickly becomes real, anyway, quickly turns into something solid, unshakeable the way being in James' favour never really has been - because Regulus needs Peter, and Peter needs him back, and while it's not necessarily healthy, it still works - and by the time Regulus is finishing his fourth year and Peter is finishing his fifth, he thinks he'd probably call them best friends.
Separate from James and the other boys, of course; but still just as important.
And then Sirius runs away to the Potters that summer. And Remus still isn't speaking to him. And Peter tries to be his friend, tries to be there for him, shows up at James' house with a smile for Effie, tries not to glow too much under the familiar weight of Monty's hand on his shoulder-
And James tells him to leave. That Sirius needs time, needs to be alone, to process, and half a hundred other things, like Peter didn't hear him snap that he doesn't want to see Peter specifically when the other boy shuffled upstairs to tell him he'd come to check on him.
(Logically, Peter knows that Sirius is suffering, and that he's mean when he's in pain. Sirius is his friend too, after all. But it's hard to be logical when you're sixteen and the person who stole your best childhood friend is making said friend kick you out of his house, when all you wanted was to be kind.)
When they get back to school, Peter has a plan. An elaborate, probably pretty mean, but as far as he's concerned entirely deserved plan to give Sirius a taste of his own medicine. And, well, to apologise to Remus for dithering between the two of them for as long as he did, because even after the years of distance growing between them he still doesn't know how to tell James no.
He's going to set up Regulus and Remus.
Take that, Sirius Black.

The Marauders fandom really underestimates just how fucking weird Remus has the potential to be, especially during his first few years at Hogwarts. He was an only child, and thanks to his Lycanthropy, he was basically raised in isolation. So already, he's severely lacking in social skills, not to mention the mental effects of isolation on a child. He probably had vivid imaginary friends and spent a large chunk of his time daydreaming and reading to soothe the loneliness.
I imagine his school nickname "Loopy" was well-earned. Just imagine how awkward and strange he would have been, this 11 year old only child who has never interacted with another child in his life and whose only friends were his (arguably ALSO weird/quirky) parents, attending school for the first time?
