Thinking about Damian Wayne-Al Ghul fasting during Ramadan in full for the first time the year he moves in with Bruce. He did intermittent fasting throughout the rest of his life but he was still a kid and Talia thought fasting would impede his training.

Little 12-year-old Damian studying the Quran between classes at Gotham Academy. Alfred preparing an Iftar buffet for him before his patrol and suhoor for once he gets back. Bruce keeping multiple water bottles in his utility belt so that Damian stays hydrated through the night. Dick participating in the fast with him despite not being Muslim because he knows it’s Damian’s first time fasting and that takes a lot of discipline. Barbara taking him to an all halal grocery store before Ramadan starts to stock up on food so he doesn’t have to waste energy shopping during the fast. Damian praying 5 times a day just like he always did with his mother and grandfather. Jon asking Damian TONS of questions about fasting and Damian acting annoyed but also being kind of happy that his best friend is interested in his religion.

The concept of Damian growing up with a Muslim shower(bidet) as he grew up in a Arabic country and just talia packing him an empty bottle(if yanno , yanno) and telling him to use this to go to the bathroom in his European tour or however he really to the Manor, with a separate Muslim shower attachment (for when he get to the manor for installment) as well and like poor bby dami confused and asks his mother if it is a training exercise and Talia just freaking longs sighs and says that the west doesn't have Muslim showers like us and they u paper to clean there butt and

DAMI JUST HORRIFEID LIKE NO WATER ???

AND LIKE HES WILLING TO BEG UMMI NOT TO SEND HIM. And then he's like but my FATHER(baba) would not be stupid enough right he must be rich enough to use water to "do the stuff right " and once again he is disappointed

And like in the background Jason had his dip already sneaks into the league to like steal a Muslim shower for himself (he grew up on the street he has to feel clean or ptsd yanno) and Ra's is so proud that ATLEST SOMEONE from the west cherises cleanliness and doesn't even care abt hurting Jason (he's like a scientist showing of his discovery) like HERE U WANT ONE TAKE IT,I HAVE A GOLD PLATED ONE TO TAKE THAT TO. Like just Muslim shower appreciation bro and Eastern culture to but mostly Muslim shower

Also the food don't get me started on that bby used to having whole a** chilies but like he's comes to USA and EVERYTHING IS SO BLAND W H Y. He has to call his mother and ask her with increasing desperation if he can come back and to at least send him a cook he is a prince after all.

Everybody at the Manor is confused abt him not eating food and putting hot sauce on everything because that's what he has been led to THE HORROR. Alfreds British and even after all that colonization BY TRADING FREAKING SPICE through the subcontinent their food is still pretty bland and Dami is so salty abt this to Alfred

Dami: Ummi these people don't even know what seasoning is, Ummi. Plz is this punishment for the time my tiger ate your dress mother. Father(baba) doesn't even know how to install a Muslim shower Ummi

And talia amused on the inside and telling to preservere and think of it as training

-Damian claims that he should be allowed to go on patrol still, but does acquiesce to only doing recon or protective missions. 

-Sleeps almost all day except to wake up for prayers, and then like an hour before sunset to ready himself for his day (a la Saudi Ramadan)

-Goes on patrol after Taraweeh, hides his costume under his thobe- everyone in the mosque can definitely see it but they’re all ignoring it. 

-Eats suhoor right after patrol, Alfred keeps it warm and ready just as he arrives

-Everyone else is very conscious of their eating during the month, literally running out of rooms if Damian is in it and they’re eating- Damian really doesn’t care though

-WE has a big employee Iftaar Gala- the one and only party that Damian is ever excited to go to

-WE also does open Iftaar every night for employees and anyone on the street who can use an extra meal at night

-Damian makes a concentrated effort to be nicer to his brothers during this month, which got more than a few concerned responses the first year, but now they all just appreciate the break and try not to antagonize him too much

-Once, there was an all hands situation before sunset and Damian insisted on helping- he had to take a second to break his fast, and then it took another half hour to explain to Riddler what he was doing; “Not even water???” “...No, not even water.”

-Bruce keeps emergency rations in his belt at all times, but he’s a little extra prepared during Ramadan in case they lose track of time or get caught up in a fight so that Damian can still have a Suhoor meal.

Absolutely BEGGING white Damian stans to stop making arranged marriage aus for their ships of him.Forced marriages are literally forbidden in islam and that's an easy thing to learn but apperantly y'all will do anything to paint brown people as still living in medieval times

Okay haven’t really posted much Damian content in a while but I just reblogged a post about Muslim Damian Wayne and as an Arab Muslim I’d like to offer my two cents.

Before I start this discussion I want to say I get it okay? Islam as other religions have been used to spread violence and hate and I don’t condone any of it. Those type of people misuse the texts that are taught and I can only hope they see the truth and stop.

With that said let’s talk about why some people headcanon Damian as Muslim. For some it’s just a fun projection. Being Muslim and seeing your favorite character being Muslim is a fun thing! For those I caution you to be careful about how you choose to portray it. Some Islamaphobic rhetoric is so ingrained into stories we can become blind to it.

For those who aren’t Muslim I want you to ask yourselves why. Some people automatically assume the Al Ghuls would/should be Muslim because they’re Arab but not every Arab is Muslim and not every Muslim is Arab. That not even to mention that Ras himself doesn’t seem to worship any deity and quotes himself as a man of science while his mother seems polytheistic.

Some might see the religion/culture fascinating and want to add it to the narrative as a form of representation. I am all for positive representation but be sure to do your research on it prior. Not just on representation but the religion itself.

Some want to use it in a negative light and I’m not going to give you guys the time of day for that.

For those of you who want to write Damian as Muslim please take into consideration the fact that the League doesn’t seem to follow any major religion and predominantly works like a cult. Maybe Damian could convert post leaving the League.

If you really want Damian to be Muslim in the league listen up. If you’re going to do that, have Islam be what teaches him morals and not meeting Bruce. Islam is all about compassion and mercy. It’s such an important part of our religion that to be without it is to go against it. We quite literally have a month dedicated to fasting to make us empathize with those lacking in our resources, making someone pay interest is a taboo in our religion because it’s acknowledged as a tool used to prey on the weak, and charity is such a huge part of Islam it’s one of the five pillars. There is an entire system dedicated to figuring out how much is the minimum you should give. And these are just the things I can think of from the top of my head!

Don’t have him learn about Islam through a member, terrorist group cult Muslim assassin is an ick but how about through learning about different religions? Maybe Islam spoke to him. That’s all for now since I’m not in analysis mode but asks are open for whenever!

My Grown Up Damian Wayne Headcanons:

The reason Damian's speech pattern can come off as odd or stiff is because English is his third language; his first language was Arabic and then he learned Cantonese. Damian has an accent which he hid most of his childhood to blend in with other Gothamites and vigilantes but when he would get emotional it would come out. Sometimes when he didn't have the words to express what he was trying to say in English, he'd substitute in Arabic words because he was most confident in his first language. As he got older he had to come up with a public persona since he was being forced to be in the public eye more and actually had to speak to people. He decided to allow himself to speak freely with his accent as Damian Wayne but Reporters still tend to stay away from him because he's the 'boring' Wayne and no one wants a quote from the eloquent and soft spoken one. He's fine with that. (Robin has a Gotham, New Jersey accent.)

Even though Damian isn't necessarily practicing, he identifies as Muslim. He even participates in some of the holidays such as Ramadan. He has memorized most of the Quran and can quote it with ease. It holds a special place in his heart and he does a lot of outreach within the community.

Damian's favorite sibling is actually Cass, he doesn't go around announcing it though because he knows it would hurt Dick's feelings but he grew really close to her in his late teens. They have a lot in common, like their similar childhoods and difficulties with building and maintaining relationships; He likes that he can talk to her about those things. Damian puts Cass in the highest regard, he's not too proud to admit she's the better fighter. He uses it to his advantage, sharpening his skills by sparring with her frequently. During team up sparring sessions they aren't allowed on the same team.

Damian has a veterinary medical degree but he also has a general medical degree so that he can practice medicine on humans too. He was already in school to become a vet when Dick's wife went into labor while Dick was off planet, they were too far from a hospital to get there in time so Damian delivered the baby. It was such an exhilarating experience that he decided to get a second medical degree to practice human medicine and to help his family out more. (sidenote: Dick's wife has not let him live that down). For a while he even acted as the new 'Alfred' staying completely out of the field and going by the code name ‘Lazarus’, but once Bruce retired and the mantles shifted around he started going out on patrol more because no one likes a backseat surgeon.

Damian had his name legally changed when he was 18 as a birthday gift to himself, he wanted to honor a legend. His name was legally changed to Damian Alfred Al Ghul-Wayne. His father cried when he saw his updated driver license.

Hal idly tapped on his phone as Simon lifted gracefully from the ground, pulling his mat from underneath him in a swift motion. 

“You wanted to talk to me?” 

“Yeah, actually,” Hal slipped the phone back into his pocket, “about your religion, actually.” 

“Islam?” Simone raised an eyebrow as he tucked his prayer mat underneath his arm, “for yourself?” He could see the Simone’s face, could watch his gears try to turn as he worked around Hal’s question. 

“Not for me, I think between the Guardians, and my mom and dad’s religion, i’m pretty much good in the religion department,” Hal said, “it’s for my son–Damian.” 

“You mean Bruce’s son, Damian Wayne?” Now Simone was really confused. Which made sense, considering he’d never seen Damina in person before. Only in passing, or on Hal’s screen saver. 

“Damian al-Ghul, depending on who you’re asking and how he’s feeling,” Hal offered, “and lately he’s been feeling the latter.” 

“Is the kid–” 

“Muslim? Partly, at least. If that’s a thing. His mom’s side of the family is, and it’s something he’s trying to reconnect with.”

“What about his dad?” 

“Bruce’s mom is Jewish, but he’s not really practicing. And even if he was, that doesn’t change the fact that Damian has no direct culture to his mother’s religion.”

Damian al Ghul Wayne + Ramadan

Sooooo, I’m Muslim and I’m definitely using Damian Wayne for my own self indulgence while fasting LOOL. 

So quick background for any of those who don’t know what Ramadan is. Ramadan is essentially a holy month for Muslims, in which we fast for 30 days from sunrise to sunset. Besides fasting, muslims are encouraged to be more spiritually involved, whether thats through giving to charity or reading from our holy book. This month is essentially a way to heal our spirituality and our beliefs.

So without further ado, here’s some pure headcanons of Damian Wayne during Ramadan:

- During Ramadan, many Gotham Muslims can spot robin perched by their Mosques. Sometimes, just making sure everyone is safe while entering and also just wanting to listen to the familiar verses of Arabic as they are read out loud

- There was one time where after prayer a bunch of little kids decided to play basketball. They spotted robin and encouraged him to play with them too. Damian accidentally missed a batsignal call because of this, and as a result didn’t show up. So when Batman went to investigate where his son went, he didn’t even have the heart to be mad at him, because he could see his son finally acting like a kid again

- many of the older Muslim women pinch his cheeks or give him compliments, to which Damian blushes (but it also makes his chest hurt, because it reminds of a time where his nanny’s and teachers would do the same)

- Damian carries dates in his pockets, and hands them out

- Bruce also donated a large sum of money to a local Mosque in Damian’s name, and he saw his son nearly smile for almost a week

- he once offered his cape to a young woman so she could use it as a prayer mat (he even once gave his cape to a little girl, so she could use it as a hijab to pray alongside her mother)

- Damian is often seen sitting outside a Mosque with a baby or a small child, so the mother inside can finish off her prayers in peace, knowing her child is safe

- Once a teenage boy offered Damian to join his friends for iftar (since he’s seen the kid around the mosque before). Damian was a bit hesitant at first but then agreed. Since then he has made 4 new friends.   (NOTE: Iftar is the time in which Muslims break their fast, usually around sunset)

- Damian once invited his new friends and their families to Wayne Manor for Iftar. It was very hectic, but Bruce was glad to learn more about Damian’s culture and to see his son so at ease with others

- Damian had enrolled himself to sunday classes at the Mosque where they taught students Arabic. Although Damian is quite fluent, he felt like he was loosing his touch and wanted to be surrounded by others who spoke Arabic as well

- Even Tim noticed a slight attitude change in Damian. He wasn’t as vicious or stubborn as he usually was. He would be more patient and more willing to listen or explain his side of things

- Damian also weirdly became friends with Simon Baz (as much as Bruce hates Green Lanterns, he could forgive the situation this time. But only this time!)

- Damian also starts patrolling during Suhoor time, ensuring everyone is safe, also getting some free food at the Mosques cuz why not. (NOTE: Suhoor is the time in which Muslims eat before they start fasting. Suhoor ends around the time when the sun rises, and fasting for the day begins)

- In fact, Damian always has food hidden in his robin uniform now. From all the free food Muslims give him during iftar. Whether its samosas or dates or sweets. (he has to hide his food from his brothers but somehow batman always steals a samosa from him)

- Damian also realizes Ramadan is a month of forgiveness, and decides to reconcile with his mother. They both have chai together and just speak about their day, all in Arabic.

- Damian also shows his brothers A LOT OF RAMADAN MEMES (just cuz we fasting, doesn’t mean we stop the memes). The only one who really gets the jokes is Jason, cuz he also spent his teenage years in Talia’s compound.

Muslim! Damian Head Canons

Even though Damian wasn’t raised with religion, he was still raised in a very structured environment that boiled down to devoting yourself to Ra’s Al Ghul. Leaving that environment to go live with Bruce meant very suddenly switching over to a solitary life style he really wasn’t used to.

Damian sought out religion partially because he needed a new organized culture to feel comfortable, but also because he really wanted to better himself as a person, and atone for all the wrongs he’d done in his life.

While the Islamic faith would be the obvious choice considering his heritage, he explored several different religions before committing to one; Christianity was most popular in the West, but it felt too consumerist. He thought about Judaism, his father was Jewish after all, but he didn’t quite agree with all the beliefs. He considered Buddhism, but considering his line of vigilante work, that wasn’t exactly going to work.

After extensive research, he realized just how similar his own values lined up with the Five Pillars. 

He found a mosque in Gotham and went regularly to speak with the Imām there about Islamic culture and what joining the mosque would involve. Because he had not been raised Muslim, he would have to convert.

Damian spoke to Bruce about it, and Bruce was honestly surprised, but extremely supportive. He was very respectful of Damian’s wishes, and wanted his son to be true to himself. 

Since Damian’s first language was Arabic, learning the prayers was very easy. It was actually really comforting how natural they came. It made him feel more at home.

He set up a prayer room in one of the unused rooms in the manor. Bruce let him empty it out so there was no need for anyone else to use that room. Damian wanted privacy when he prayed.

Damian downloaded an app on his phone that would send him alerts for when it was time to pray so he would never forget. He took it upon himself to talk to his school about stepping out of class as necessary.

No one other than Bruce and Alfred new about Damian’s religion until one night when Damian was on patrol with Dick. A small alarm went off, and Damian immediately stopped everything he was doing and checked a compass before pulling his cape off and laying it on the ground so he could begin his prayer.

While some might consider vigilante work charity, Damian doesn’t. Instead he fulfills his charitable donations by sending money to and volunteering at animal shelters.

He’s found a really good community in his local mosque and often goes to events they hold. Sometime’s he’ll bring members of his family with him. He invited Bruce, Dick and Alfred to join him for Eid al-Fitr at the end of Ramadan. While he may not say it, it was really nice to be able to share that part of his culture with them.
