hey maveriques and allies!
the 31st may has been declared maverique visibility day a while ago as that was when maverique was first coined.
the 31st may 2024 is the 10-year anniversary of the coining of maverique.
i feel like this might be a great opportunity for us and our allies to do something to increase visibility of and awareness for maveriques.
i already have a vague plan for a maverique episode on my podcast and i will post something on my instagram as well.
if anyone else has ideas about what we can do as a community, hit me up!
it's time for us to finally move past only being featured as an obscure nonbinary identity, together. it's time for us to be known.

alternative maverique symbol
due to the confusing symbolism of the original maverique symbol (and me simply not liking it personally), i decided to create an alternative one. this is not meant to replace any other maverique symbols out there, it's just something i'm creating for my own comfort mainly and i'm sharing it with people.
here's the plain symbol and the symbol in maverique colours, both transparent and not.

the large circle doesn't represent anything, it's just usallly part of gender symbols. the small filled circles on the left and right represent the gender binary. the bigger filled circle in the middle represents maveriques, not touching the other circles to symbolise that we are not part of or overlapping with the gender binary.

Maverique is a gender identity described as a present feeling of gender completely separate from man, woman, and neutral or anything derived from any of them

Just a wee reminder that the first recording of neopronouns was 1789, one of the oldest noted examples of neopronouns were 'thon'! And also remember the key word 'recorded' so that means neopronouns could've existed even WAY before that
(Edit! Thon was actually created in 1858! And in 1789 it was 'ou', sry for not updating that quick enough 😅)

Don't mind me I'm just getting emotional over the lego store in times square (USA) having an aro flag included in their pride display T-T
Tumblr media

The progress pride flag forms a border around the other flags. End ID.

it bothers me when people use "gendered" synonymously with "binary gendered"/"male/female/masc/fem gendered", because that still implies that those are the only two options, the only two real genders, when in fact there are so many people who are gendered in ways those people probably wouldn't comprehend. like, i have seen people describe maverique as "not having gendered feelings" before, which is only true if you mean binary gendered (and neutrally gendered), which only works if you think male and female are the only existing genders. it's subtle, but it still has implications.
same goes for "nonbinary people don't want to be gendered". i mean, yeah, a lot of us don't, even those who do have genders, but others very much do. i want to be gendered as maverique, just not as binary. that's part of why i use neopronouns rather than they/them, because to me, my neopronouns feel gendered in a way that's specific to me, whereas they/them pronouns are often referred to as non-gendered pronouns.
of course, most people will only know to view me in a binary-gendered way or in a non-gendered way, so i choose non-gendered, but that doesn't mean that me and many other non-binary people are necessarily non-gendered ourselves.
gendered =/= binary, as there are more than two genders.
