Chapter 3:
Two weeks had passed since the incident with the Joker Gang, and Tim was still not allowed to leave the manor.
He protested to Bruce, but he was firm in not letting him back into the field until he had fully healed.
Seeing Tim's frustration, Alfred explained that Bruce was only doing this for his own wellbeing.
Tim doubted that, but a part of him wondered if Bruce was genuinely just concerned for his safety.
There were times where Tim had caught Bruce staring at him with a mixture of worry and relief on his face.
The cynical side of him quickly dashed that hope as he realized that Bruce probably just didn't want to ruin Batman's reputation by losing another Robin.
Tim knew the importance of reputation, his parents had made that very clear to him.
His mind drifted back to when he was six years old. He remembered saying something a bit too bluntly to an important looking man in a business suit.
He'd forgotten what he said, but he remembered the punishment he got because of it.
He was isolated in his room for three days, with meals being sent up to him via staff, who were ordered not to talk to him.
He remembered that his parents' reasoning was that he should learn that there will be consequences for ruining their relationship with an important benefactor of their archaeological digs.
Tim felt a pang of anger at the memory. At least they were on a dig in Peru at the moment, he doesn't have to worry about dealing with them for now.
Alfred noticed him stiffening and suggested that he take a walk around the Wayne estate to clear his mind.
Tim just nodded and went up to get his camera. He might as well do something productive.
A few hours of blissfully ignoring his problems did wonders for his mood, until he was rudely brought back down to earth as he came across Jason's grave.
He had loved Jason. Even if they had never met, Jason had left a huge impact on Tim's life.
Tim may have figured out Dick's identity as Robin at the tender age of three, but he didn't actually join Batman and Robin in their nightly jaunts until he was nine.
By that time, Jason had already established himself as the next Robin.
Jason was his Robin.
His heart shattered when he realized that Jason had died.
He didn't want to disrespect Jason's passing, but someone had to rein Batman in.
Tim paused his train of thought and stepped closer to the grave. Something felt off, the dirt on the grave felt too fresh. To the untrained eye, it seemed normal, but Tim's detective senses were roused.
Has someone disturbed it? That couldn't have been possible. Bruce kept a close eye on the estate to ensure no one breaks in.
Tim took a few steps back, and snapped a picture of the grave. His emotions took a back seat as the gears in his mind began to turn.
If anyone had somehow managed to disturb Jason's grave, they must have been very skilled, which leaves out any petty grave robbers.
Tim ran back to the manor to retrieve a DNA analysis kit. He only met Alfred in the hallways who's only remark was to slow down, lest he hurt himself.
All Tim needed was confirmation that nothing had happened to Jason's grave, that's all.
"Sorry about this Jay." Tim muttered under his breath as he quickly chipped off a few pieces of the gravestone. He could use them to run a DNA test when he was back at the batcave.
Tim hurried back into the manor to run his tests.
The DNA analysis came back as positive for Talia Al Ghul.
Tim stared at the bat computer screen blankly.
'Talia Al Ghul'
Tim took a moment to process that fact.
Maybe Talia was just visiting, Bruce had mentioned that Jason and Talia has met before.
He didn't have time to mull over that thought, as the soil analysis came back. The determining factor on whether this was just a visit, or something more.
The soil in the grave had a markedly different chemical composition when compared to what was usually found in Gotham.
For one, it lacked the pollutants from Gotham's chemical and pharmaceutical companies. The analysis also revealed that there were trace amounts of a chemical that matched the league of assassin's Lazarus pits'.
This clinched it. The league was after Jason, or more accurately, Jason's body. Tim thought of the reasons behind that move, they must have known that it would eventually be found out by Bruce. They must know that Batman is a dangerous enemy to have.
Suddenly, a spark of hope bubbled up in him.
What if they wanted to revive Jason using the Lazarus Pits?
Tim tried to shake the thought from his brain. It was much more likely that the LOA just wanted an unlimited source of Jason's DNA.
But by now, the spark had nestled deep in his heart. If there was even a chance that Jason was alive, then he had to investigate.
The question now was whether or not he should involve Bruce in the mission.
Bruce was and still is, in a terrible place. Jason's death had destroyed Bruce's soul so thoroughly that he avoided visiting Jason's grave after the funeral.
Tim taking on the Robin mantle relieved some of his burdens, but he was still by no means stable.
He didn't know how Bruce would react if he found out about the grave robbing.
He came to a decision.
Under no circumstances should Bruce know of this mission. He'll figure out how to break the news to him after the mission is complete. But as of now, Bruce was too much of a liability.
Tim's mind began to formulate a plan to retrieve Jason from the league.
If Talia was involved, then it was likely that Jason will be found high up in the league hierarchy. This removed most common league training grounds and only left the highly defended sacred city of 'Eth Alth'eban, and the main base of Nanda Parbat.
There was also the league of shadows, which contrary to popular belief, was not actually a splinter faction of the league of assassins, and instead acted as a specialized arm. Acting as though the two were separate entities was a tactic by Talia to throw off anyone trying to bring the league down.
Tim mulled over his options.
The league of shadows had a base at Sullivan island in the South of Gotham, which would be his easiest point of entry.
However, he's 90% sure that the base is there exclusively to keep an eye on Batman and his associates. Tim was certain that he would be captured if he ever so much as set foot on the island.
Unless, that was what he wanted.
He could get caught voluntarily. He knew from working on cases related to the League of Assassins with Bruce that Ra's Al Ghul' had taken a special interest in the Bat and would likely be thrilled if the little birdie waltzed right into his cage.
Tim was 90% sure that he won't die from attempting this, but even if he did die, Ra's is likely to just dunk him in the Lazarus Pits, so he should be fine.
Now all he needed to do was throw Batman off his scent.
He could tell Bruce that he was going back to Drake manor for a month to work through some Drake industries work. Bruce wouldn't question it too much and Alfred would just be happy that he's taking a break from being a vigilante.
If everything works out according to plan, Bruce would never even notice that he was missing.
He hacked into the cameras at Drake manor to make it seem as though Tim was just doing Tim things. This way, if Bruce bothered to check the cameras, he wouldn't come across anything incriminating.
Tim packed some crucial gear and prepared to get kidnapped. If it all goes smoothly, he should be sent directly to Talia's doorstep.
He got on Redbird and began his journey south.

Not Without Me (part 3)
Part 1, part 2
Jason was still absolutely furious, and grieving about what had happened with Bruce, despite Danny’s best efforts to comfort and look after him. The Joker’s death had helped a lot but there were so many other villains out there, and now with the knowledge that Bruce would never change Jason’s thoughts turned to Tim. The new Boy Wonder, going out night after night and putting himself in danger for the sake of adults who Should know better! Leading the Teen Titans and Still working with Batman, when did the fucking kid sleep?!
What was it going to take for everyone to realize he shouldn’t be out on the field?! Maybe an argument could be made for some of the more powerful teen heroes like Superboy, but Tim was Just a teenager! A super smart one sure but he could get hurt so easily, he could die just like Jason had. Was it going to take a serious injury to show them what a bad idea it was?
And maybe a part of Jason did blame Tim, not for his death obviously, but for taking Robin from him when it had been his pride and joy. It had meant everything to him, and it seemed like between the original Boy Wonder and the new genius boy Jason had nearly been forgotten.
So no he wasn’t thinking particularly logically when he got ready to go to Titan’s tower, and the closest thing he had to a plan was to get Robin alone and beat the shit out of him until he agreed to put the suit back in the memorial case where it belonged! The anger spiraled up and out as Jason prepared to leave, working himself up into a cold, green tinged fury.
He hadn’t told Danny what he was planning to do, and he hadn’t on purpose. Danny was loyal and sometimes almost too submissive, but Jason seriously doubted his boyfriend would let him do this. Maybe that ever-permissive Danny would have stopped him should have been a sign to Jason he really Shouldn’t, but he was not thinking logically in that moment. His blood was rushing in his ears, which was probably why he didn’t notice someone else was there until the door slammed.
“Where do you think you’re going?” Danny demanded and Jason looked up to see him standing in front of the door, arms crossed and legs planted staring Jason down. His head was lifted and there was a stubborn set to his jaw that Jason Hated seeing because it meant Danny was not backing down. Alright, he hated seeing it directed at him, when Danny directed this at other people Jason thought it was hot as hell.
“Out,” Jason practically snarled, slinging his bag over his shoulder and stomping towards the door in the vain hope that Danny would get out of his way.
“Like hell you are, not till you tell me Where you’re going worked up like this! What happened?” Danny demanded, and did not move an inch. When Jason got too close and tried to push past Danny he grabbed Jason and pushed him back hard. It was easy to forget how Strong he was.
“Don’t fucking touch me right now,” Jason snarled at Danny who stepped forward, infuriatingly fearless.
“Or what? You’ll hurt me? Good, then we can actually have a productive conversation about this.” Danny accused, jabbing a finger against Jason’s chest.
Jason grabbed Danny’s wrist without even thinking and twisted, throwing Danny over his shoulder and to the floor. He tried to bolt towards the door but felt a hand around his ankle and fell heavily as well. He’d only managed to roll over onto his back before Danny was on top of him, his own sharp teeth bared in fury. “You’re not running away from me, Jason!” He hissed as Jason struggled under him, still with just barely the presence of mind to be trying to get Away! If he started fighting Danny, or beating him properly there was no way Jason would be able to stop until he’d tired himself out and wouldn’t Want to go after Tim anymore.
Danny wasn’t going to let go though, and Jason’s eyes widened behind his mask when Danny lunged down, his teeth clamped down on Jason’s shoulder, tearing through his shirt and into his flesh easily. He howled and flipped them both over, the pain and perceived threat of someone near his vulnerable throat finally making him lose control.
By the time the green retreated from Jason’s vision again his knuckles were bloody and bruised. He was breathing heavily and his shoulders ached, and not just where Danny had bit him but the muscle ache of exertion. Under him Danny panted, eyes closed tight and bruises still fading slowly from his skin under Jason’s stunned gaze.
He pulled off his helmet and cupped Danny’s face with gentle hands. Danny opened his eyes again and looked up at Jason, eyes bloodshot and suspicious. Jason gave him a small smile and Danny relaxed, smiling back and lifting his arms to drape them around Jason’s shoulders, they were heavy, Jason could practically see that fatigue dripping off of Danny. He kissed his boyfriend gently and sweetly, peppering feather light kisses over any lingering bruises as Danny gave a soft, happy sigh.
“I need a bath,” Danny murmured softly. Even though the wounds healed the soreness lingered sometimes, baths helped, even if there wasn’t blood down Danny’s face and staining the collar of his shirt. Jason must have given him a bloody nose a few times over.
“Of course,” Jason murmured and got up off of Danny, helping him to his feet before scooping Danny up in a bridal carry. He was light, Jason’s arms weren’t too tired to carry his lover. In the bathroom Jason set Danny down on the counter and kissed him again softly before putting the plug in the tub and started the water running. He grabbed a dark coloured cloth and wet it before handing it to Danny so he could clean the worst of the blood off his face.
Out of habit he turned to leave, Danny still hadn’t let Jason see him with his shirt off so when he bathed he did it alone. But not this time it seemed, Danny grabbed Jason’s arm before he could leave the room, eyes wide and a little panicky. Shit, Jason didn’t mean to upset him! Did Danny still think Jason would try to sneak away once he was out of sight?
“No, please stay,” Danny said softly, looking like he might cry which was a knife in Jason’s heart honestly.
“Of Course I’ll stay, I just thought-, I mean you’re not going to bathe with your shirt on,” He said, trying to make a joke as he stepped forward to wrap his arms around Danny. For the moment he’d almost forgotten why he was angry before, they’d have to talk about it soon but taking care of Danny came first.
“Well, no, but I don’t want to be alone right now and you’re going to have to see the scars eventually anyway. I just don’t like looking at them, or thinking about them really, but… ya.” Danny sighed and leaned back, finally stripping off his shirt as Jason braced himself, then carefully controlled his reaction and pushed down his nausea.
Danny’s scars were… extensive. They didn’t make Jason sick because they were unattractive of course, far from it, but because of the story they told. There was the lichtenberg scar Danny had shown him before, branching up his arm and curling over his chest, but that was probably the least disturbing. The most were the surgical wounds. Straight and clear forming a pronounced Y on Danny’s chest and abdomen, there were straight ones down both of his arms, and a vertical one up the front of his throat, though that one was just slightly less pronounced to the point it could be missed on first glance, out of contact with the rest of This.
Jason knew Danny didn’t scar easily, even when Jason had stabbed him in the shoulder the wound had not scarred. How bad, how extensive, how Deep had these wounds been, that they scarred like that?
Jason realized he was staring, and Danny was looking at him with concern slowly transitioning into panic. Jason stepped closer, leaning against the counter between Danny’s legs when he opened them for him, resting his hands on Danny’s soft hips. He pressed his lips against Danny’s forehead, hearing it as Danny let out a shuddering breath he must have been holding.
“I just… wish that hadn’t happened to you Danny. And I really wish it wasn’t taking so long for my hackers and agents to find out Where the other GIW bases are, I want to tear those people apart,” He said. He could feel the Pits stirring just slightly inside him, though they were too spent to really react right now.
“I could probably find them myself if I tried, but honestly I’m scared. I’m not sure I’m ready to face them again,” Danny said softly and Jason sighed.
“I get that Danny, it’s okay,” He promised. He wanted to blow up those bases ASAP, especially since they might be hurting other people, but he couldn’t Force Danny. Hopefully his people would find out more soon and Jason might be able to handle it on his own, maybe with some help from old friends.
The bath had finished running so Jason turned away from Danny to turn it off while he undressed the rest of the way. Jason gave him a hand to steady him as Danny stepped into the water and sank down into it with a sigh. Jason sat beside the tub, leaning against the edge and holding one of Danny’s hands as he relaxed. He’d wash off the remainder of the blood when he was ready to get out so he wouldn’t be soaking in bloody water till then.
“So, where were you headed That upset?” Danny asked, watching Jason with half lidded eyes.
“You know, one of these days I’m actually going to be going to do something time sensitive and you stopping me like that is going to cause problems,” Jason grumbled without heat. He knew he was a liability at times when his rage really took over and needed Danny with him then more than ever. Danny knew it too judging by the disbelieving huff he gave Jason in response. “I was… not being rational, I was freaking out about the new Robin.
“He’s just a kid like I was, I don’t want him to die,” Jason muttered, crossing his arms over the edge of the tub and resting his chin on them.
“So what were you planning to do? Kidnap him?” Danny asked calmly.
Jason avoided his gaze.
“Jason… you weren’t planning to hurt him were you?” Danny asked, and his disappointment was cutting and gentle. Jason’s shame was deep and heavy, making him shrink into himself.
“I thought maybe if I showed him how dangerous it was, how easily he could die he might Want to stop,” Jason muttered, barely audibly.
“You DID die and nearly the first thing you did once you came back was hop back into costume! Do you really think that would stop him when it didn’t stop you?! He doesn’t seem like he’s any less stubborn,” Danny accused him.
Jason groaned and buried his face in his arms, but didn’t let go of Danny’s hand. He was right of course, Jason had been being an idiot, driven by emotion and the blood rushing in his ears. He should have talked to Danny about this ages ago. “No, it wouldn’t have stopped him. So what do we do?” Jason asked, his voice muffled.
He felt Danny’s other hand in his hair and leaned in to the soothing touch a little, letting him card his fingers through Jason’s hair. “I know you’re not going to like this Jason, but I don’t think we can make him stop.” Danny said softly and Jason let out a sound that was half a groan and half a growl. “He won’t stop for pain, if we kidnap him we won’t be able to keep him and drawing that much attention to ourselves would definitely be a mistake. We can’t make him stop, but we can probably help him.”
Jason hummed and peaked at Danny who was gazing into the middle distance thoughtfully. “Danny? What are you thinking?” Jason asked a little warily.
“What did you need when you were Robin? What would have made you stop?” Danny asked, looking back down at Jason.
It was his turn to fall silent, thinking deeply about that question. He sighed and shifted, leaning his back against the edge of the tub and stretching his legs out in front of him. He tilted his head back to stare at the ceiling in contemplation. “Someone.. Who would support me unconditionally. Bruce didn’t Make me be Robin, but a lot of the time it felt like it was the only way I could get his attention. Being rewarded for Not going out… help?” He said with a vague little gesture of his free hand.
“Can we try to do that for him? If we can get in contact with him we can offer him support, places to hide if he needs a break from Bruce, help with homework? Whatever he needs. At first he’ll probably take advantage of that as an opportunity to spy on us, but as long as we’re careful about it, that could be our in,” Danny suggested.
“What would I do without you,” Jason sighed, looking at Danny with his damn heart in his eyes as Danny gave him a fond but sardonic smile.
“Apparently, nearly beat a teenager to death,” Danny said and Jason groaned, his head thunking back against the side of the tub.
“How long is it going to take for you to let that go?” He asked preemptively.
“Never,” Danny replied blithely. “I will bring it up every time I need to remind you Why you need to talk to me before doing something drastic.”
Jason groaned again, but he definitely deserved that.
--------
Instead of breaking into Titan Tower to fight Tim, Jason broke in to leave him a note in his room.
Hey Timmy (A.K.A. Replacement)
I know I’ve made a pretty damn terrible first impression but I want you to know that it’s not you I’m mad at. I understand wanting to be Robin, I loved the role more than anything before it killed me, and even though I don’t want any more dead kids I don’t think I can make you give it up.
But you know it’s dangerous, we both do. If you ever get in over your head, you need a place to hide, get in over your head in a fight? Hell, you need help with your homework. I'm really good with English and Hyena knows more than anyone I’ve met about Astronomy.
If the old man is with you we won’t let you in, but if You need anything you can call me, or come to the Alley. As long as you’re alone you are welcome, and I swear on my own grave no one will hurt you.

I was planning a part 2, no worries. All right, time to get to writing. Famous last word of the author who will procrastinate... Oops. Also, people who didn't read the first part, they can read it here: PART 1
Summary: (Y/N) is slowly getting more comfortable with his new family. The others are happy.
Warnings: fluff, (Y/N) thinking about his new life, teasing.
Quick note, this GIF is too adorable to not put here...
Tumblr media
It has been a month since (Y/N) came to live with the Waynes. It was a difficult adjustment for (Y/N). After spending years on the Gotham streets, it wasn't easy to adjust to a warm room, a comfortable bed or 3 regular meals a day.
He also didn't like that he had to go to school. He preferred to learn on his own, it was much more better. But Bruce left him no choice. Bruce used his suit as leverage, using the threat of taking it.
(Y/N) disliked him even more due to the threat.
(Y/N) sighed as he walked down the school corridors, adjusting the straps of his bag. He was really going to escape one day. He thought about escaping often, but Bruce made sure that the house was secure like Pentagon. No out.
He was walking to his biology class, just ready to end the day. And he was hoping that he would avoid Damian, who disliked him. Even after a month of living with them, Damian still didn't tolerate him and would be set off by anything that (Y/N) did.
(Y/N) could only hope that he didn't have biology with Damian. He would rather shoot himself then sharing this class. He was avoiding Damian in school like a plague.
For a moment he thought about the other members of the family. Tim was the only one that (Y/N) could come to talk to. If one had a question, they would go ask another one. But he was still iffy around Tim, not knowing if he can trust him just yet.
Dick? Well, (Y/N) found him annoying with how much he was trying to welcome him into the family and into the home. But at least Dick was trying.
Jason was not welcoming towards (Y/N), but didn't fight with him like Damian. He just stayed out of (Y/N)'s way.
And Bruce? Well, he tried his best to get closer to (Y/N), but (Y/N) refused to open up to him. He can't expect (Y/N) to open up when Bruce adopted him by force.
Out of the corner of his eye he could see Damian, but he ignored him, turning his head completely.
" (Y/N) can you come and help me? " Tim asked him, popping his head into his room. (Y/N) lifted his head from his sketch book, sketching a new version of his bites.
" With what? " (Y/N) asked from the bed.
" It's a case, I'm just stumped. " Tim explained, scratching the back of his neck, clearly not wanting to admit the defeat.
" Sure, why not. " (Y/N) said, putting the sketchbook down and standing from the bed. He followed Tim to the cave. It seems like Tim was tired from the case itself.
" What is the case about? " (Y/N) asked.
" It's a murder case, my guess Professor Pyg, but I can't prove it. It's just... This case is so annoying. " Tim said, entering the cave.
(Y/N) didn't like the cave very much. It brought the memory of being brought here and (Y/N) didn't want to remember the night that changed his life. For the better or for worse? He still didn't know.
Tim pulled two chairs and (Y/N) sat down next to him, looking up at the big screen of the computer. Tim pulled up everything he had.
" So what is bothering you about this? " (Y/N) asked.
" Well, Professor Pyg was in Arkham, but he escaped, but there was a string of murders before hand. It seems like he was in Arkham and killing in the city at the same time. " Tim explained.
" Okay, well, it seems like he has a helper. Did you look into who spends the most time with him in Arkham? " (Y/N) asked Tim, now realizing that the others were in the cave too.
Shit.
" I didn't, but I will look into it. Thanks. Oh wait, I figured out the problem with the bites you said you had. " Tim said, giving him a few pieces of paper.
" You did? Thanks. " (Y/N) thanked Tim, moving to walk back upstairs, passing right past the others without a word. Bruce watched him walk off. He had a plan to get closer to (Y/N).
" I think that (Y/N) might be right about this. " Tim said, biting his nail.
" Good. " Bruce said, moving closer to the screen.
" Did you talk to (Y/N) about the internship at Wayne Enterprises? " Tim asked Bruce, looking at him.
" I will talk to him tonight after dinner before we go to patrol tonight. "
Tim nodded, turning his head back to look at the screen.
And after dinner, after (Y/N) went upstairs to his room, Bruce went after him, knocking on the door. He opened the door after her heard a faint come in.
Bruce entered the room, closing the door behind himself. (Y/N) was sitting at his desk, books open all over the desk.
" Are you busy? " Bruce asked, trying to ease the tension.
" At the moment no. " (Y/N) said dryly, turning in his chair to face Bruce. Bruce noticed how tense (Y/N) was and he hoped that this idea would work. He wanted (Y/N) to be comfortable with him and he knew that it would take time.
" So, I have an idea and you can say yes or no to it. " Bruce started, sitting down at (Y/N)'s bed. " I know you love to work on your suit, but I feel like there is more to your intelligence, so I talked to Lucius Fox, one of my trusted friends. He is the one who is responsible for making our suits. " Bruce stopped for a moment, watching (Y/N)'s reaction. He is interested, good.
" I talked to him about you helping him out as an intern. And you will be paid for your work. " Bruce said, making (Y/N) stand up from the chair in excitement.
" Really?! " (Y/N) asked, just shaking with excitement.
" Yes. I thought about you going everyday after school, but for a few hours. I can't forget about your school. " Bruce said and (Y/N) just flew into his arms into a hug.
When (Y/N) stopped hugging Bruce, already composed. He always dreamt of working in such a lab.
" And the money would be mine? " (Y/N) asked, liking the idea of earning his own money.
" Yes, you would have your own account and that is just yours. " Bruce said, happy to see that (Y/N) was happy.
" Thank you Bruce. " (Y/N) said, moving to sit back at the chair.
" No need to thank me. I saw how you don't really like being in school and the fact that you don't go out on patrol anymore, I thought that it would be nice to let you get out sometime. " Bruce said, suppressing a smile.
Everyone in the house could see the change in (Y/N)'s demeanor. He was happier since he started his internship and more so, he got more comfortable with Bruce. And Lucius was an amazing teacher and a mentor. And Bruce was definitely happier knowing that (Y/N) was more comfortable with him.
While (Y/N) was more comfortable with Bruce and Tim, the other three weren't so lucky. They didn't want to look like they didn't want (Y/N) here, but still, there was still some resentment towards him for taking their missions.
Jason came home from patrol, stressed out from the criminals and the lack of leads for a case. He had a plan. Take a shower and go on the roof to smoke.
Important note, be alone.
Jason took a quick shower then took his pack of cigarettes. He opened the window and climbed onto the roof. Jason shared a wall with (Y/N)'s room so he was and wasn't shocked when he saw (Y/N) sitting on the roof.
Jason noticed how tense he got when he saw him and simply put his cigarette in his mouth to raise his hands, to show that there is nothing to be tense about.
" Don't worry, I just came to smoke here. I had a rough night. " Jason said, taking a lighter and lighting up his cigarette. He took a long drag before letting the smoke out.
" What is bothering you? " He asked, letting the smoke out.
" It's nothing. " (Y/N) said, waving Jason off.
" Are you sure? I know we aren't close, but you can tell me. I won't tell Bruce. " Jason said, shocking himself with his statement. Since when did he care?
" Promise me that you won't tell Bruce? " (Y/N) asked.
" Promise. " Jason said. " You smoke? "
" No, I don't. " (Y/N) said, taking a deep breath.
" I just miss going out on patrol and I just miss my old life. " (Y/N) admitted to Jason, who nodded.
" I mean, it's nice to have 3 meals a day and a home, but all I knew all my life are the streets of Gotham. It's difficult to just switch your mindset. "
Jason took a drag, before letting his smoke out. " You know, I had the same problem when I first came here. I didn't really live on the streets, but I was close to. Bruce saved me and it was difficult for me to adjust too. " Jason admitted to (Y/N).
(Y/N) just raised his brow, maybe shocked to hear Jason's confession. But it felt nice knowing that he wasn't the only one who has felt the way he has. After going back into his room, Jason smiled at himself. (Y/N) got more comfortable with him...
Alfred asked Dick to pick up (Y/N) from his internship, since he couldn't make it. Dick didn't mind picking up his younger brother, in fact it meant that they could spend more time together. Usually Bruce would drop him off at home when he was done with work, but he had more work today.
Dick parked his car just when (Y/N) came out of the building. He waived him over and (Y/N) sped up to the car. He sat in the front, putting his bag down onto the car floor and putting his seatbelt on.
" How was your day? " Dick asked, driving to a cafe that he knew (Y/N) would love.
" It was fine. " (Y/N) said.
" What did you work on today? "
" Just some minor improvements for the suits and something for the company, just to keep up the façade. " (Y/N) said vaguely.
" That's nice. "
" Where are we going? " (Y/N) asked, noticing that they weren't going to the manor.
" You and I are going to hang out today. " Dick said, with a far too much of a cheerful voice than (Y/N) would have liked.
" Great. " (Y/N) said dryly, clearly not happy with the idea.
" Don't be so negative Jinx. We are going to go to a cafe to get some drinks. "
(Y/N) didn't know why they would do that, but he has no choice. he doesn't want to walk back home.
" Don't be so negative about it. You will like it. " Dick said, finding a spot. He turned off the car and both of them stepped out. Dick led them into the quiet cafe and they both order coffees. They sat down, waiting for their drinks.
" I heard a rumor that you miss going on patrol. " Dick said, taking a sip of his coffee.
(Y/N) remembered the talk with Jason. Did he spill? " Who told you that? " (Y/N) asked, tilting his head.
" Nobody, I'm just messing with you. I can see it in your eyes. " Dick admitted, seeing the relief in his eyes. Jason definitely told Dick, but threatened his if he told anything to (Y/N) about his involement.
" I do miss it... It was way more free than now. "
" What if I tell you that Bruce wants you to go? " Dick said, bringing his mug to his lips.
" What? " (Y/N) asked, now completely shocked. What is Dick talking about?
" He told me that he is sure that you will like to be back on patrol. He saw how you miss it and since you have been here long enough for Bruce to trust you, then he said you are allowed to go. " Dick said, reaching for his pocket. There was the USB he handed out to (Y/N).
" I know you were working on a case when we... Took you in. So, I took it upon myself to investigate it. Here is everything I have collected. " Dick said, nodding to (Y/N) who was hesitant to take it.
" I know you are still hesitant, but I just want you too feel comfortable with me. " Dick said, watching (Y/N) sip his coffee.
" Well, it's not easy to get comfortable with the people that forced this on you. " (Y/N) said, tapping his fingers against the wooden table.
" I know, but it's better than you living on the streets. " Dick said, fixing his jacket.
" You are right about that, but I had fun on the streets. There wasn't a set of rules... "
" But there was a struggle. " Dick said, saving themselves an argument.
" Yeah, but still. " (Y/N) said, shrugging his shoulders.
And that same night, Jinx was officially back on the Gotham scene. It was obvious to all of them that patrol was something to bring out the old (Y/N) and not the new withdrawn (Y/N).
Bruce had to say, (Y/N) listened to them and let them know where he was and he listened to the orders and plans. He was paired with Damian. On tonight's agenda was destroying Penguin's weapons cache.
" Alright everyone, lets go. Watch out for the henchmen. " Batman said through the comms.
Everyone let out noises of agreement and on they went. Robin and Jinx moved swiftly and quietly, taking everyone out quietly. They didn't talk, they just moved around like shadows.
After a while, they met in the center of the building, looking at the weapons piled up here. There was enough to start a civil war in the city and probably the tristate area.
" Okay, even I don't need this much weapons. " Jason said, looking at the caches, whistling afterwards.
" Lets just destroy it and go home. " Jinx said, looking into his belt for explosives.
" Hang on, if we can put them into those vaults and in the process destroy the money..." Dick started, pointing at the vaults with his baton.
" That's not a bad idea. " Batman said, ready to push, but the doors closed and locked.
It was Penguin sending his goons in to kill them. All of them jumped into fight mode, each of them holding their own. During the fight, Jinx saw a goon pulling out a gun. It was pointed and Damian and Jinx didn't think before jumping in front of it, protecting Damian from the shot.
Damian was shocked to find that (Y/N) was shot because he was protecting him. None the less, they finished fighting and went straight to the cave. Bruce drove like a maniac, every single second precious to them when it came to being shot. They had notified Alfred to get the medical wing ready.
After coming to the cave and Alfred taking over the medical for (Y/N), everyone was silent. Damian didn't know what to say. It was weird and incomprehensible to him why would (Y/N) do that for him. They changed into their pajamas, just waiting for Alfred to come out with good news.
After what seemed like an eternity, Alfred came out, giving them those good news.
" He is going to be fine gentlemen. I will spend the night here just in case. You can go up and sleep it off. "
That same day, more precisely morning, they all came into the medical wing of the cave, waiting for (Y/N) to wake up. They were all anxious, watching like hawks.
After a while, (Y/N)'s eyes opened and everyone was silent. " Look, it's the best Robin. " (Y/N) giggled, pointing at Damian. Jason had to step out to let out a laugh. Bruce looked up to at the ceiling, wondering why did he adopt him.
Dick coughed, covering the snort that came out. (Y/N) is going to get teased relentlessly for the next couple of months.
Tim was shocked that it wasn't him. He felt slightly betrayed.
And Damian was outright shocked, which doesn't happen often. Holy shit. He was going to use this piece of information at every opportunity possible.
(Y/N) giggled and got quiet again. (Y/N) was okay and he was going to fit in with them.

early bird
Jason might’ve had a homefield advantage when it came to Crime Alley, but he was under no impression that the streets he remembered as a child were the same as they were today.  Hell, even the streets he’d patrolled as Robin wouldn’t be the same.  If he wanted to take over, he needed to get the lay of the land—where the gangs were, who was calling the shots, who was unhappy about it.
And where the Bats were.
The Red Hood was going to make his big debut after he knew who all the players were.  Right now, Jason was skulking around in all-black gear, armor on, armed with blades instead of guns.  He didn’t plan on killing anyone.  Not yet.
But Jason felt uneasy almost instantly.
The whole city seemed to be holding its breath, the way it did after a major Rogue attack.  Jason had kept up with news of Gotham’s freakshow gallery, and there had been nothing for months.  Plenty of crime, but the big name players were lying low.  There should be no reason for people to act like they’d just gone through a fear toxin outbreak.
Jason was feeling very uneasy indeed.
The first inkling he had that something was off was the goons on the street.  While the gangs in Crime Alley changed territory like a penny changed hands, Jason had gotten used to seeing a few familiar faces.  Now, there were no familiar faces, only full-face masks and a lingering sense of malaise.
The second clue that something was wrong was the aftermath of destruction.  Gotham was a shit place for infrastructure at the best of times, but usually there wasn’t rubble lying on the streets, cordoned off by tattered tape, or gutted-out hollows of burnt buildings.  It looked like a full-scale war had erupted on the island.
And the last thing Jason needed to finish the creeping sense of something’s not right was the glimpse he’d gotten of Batman on patrol.  The Dark Knight swung through the air like a wraith and where Jason looked immediately for red-green-yellow—Replacement, target, how dare he take what’s mine—he found nothing.
No brightly colored shadow.
No joyful laugh.
Nothing but darkness.
Something was very, very wrong.
~#~
It took Jason a couple of days to figure out what had happened.  No one wanted to talk to him, not the semi-stranger nor the cloaked figure all in black.  Jason finally had to bare his face and find one of the working girls he’d known as a kid.  She’d been happy to fill him in, though she’d used a hushed voice the entire time.
A gang war in Gotham.  Boundary lines drawn all over the place.  Some loser calling himself the Black Mask and the False Face Society taking control in an awful five-day wave of violence and brutality.  And then…well, then the story got a little confusing.
No one had seen Robin since the incident.  Batman had apparently gone feral.  Black Mask was in prison with several broken bones.  Nightwing had showed up, permanently if the outrage from Bludhaven was anything to go by.  Word on the street was that Robin was dead.
Jason didn’t know whether to be pleased or not—the pretender was gone, but Jason was supposed to be the one to do it—when his train of thought was abruptly derailed.
“It’s just like last time,” rasped a girl with a too-old-for-her-face stare.  “Robin croaks it, Batman goes cuckoo.”
“What,” Jason said.
“The Bat was scary last time,” another girl shivered, hands rubbing her arms.  “You know he put Johnny in the hospital for trying to take some bread?”
“Hope he picks up another Robin soon,” muttered a girl with a resigned expression.
“No, Stella, you know they’re children, right?  How could you even say that—”
“Look, either we give the guy in a bat suit his emotional support child endangerment, or Batman’s going to become just as bad as his villains.  Who’s going to watch this city if everyone’s a freak?”
Jason slipped away from the group as the girls all began bickering, arguing over whether or not Batman needed a Robin, if Robin was even human in the first place, if they should just pack up and leave.  He didn’t want to listen to a fiercely indignant woman call Batman a child abuser while a darkly resigned one just shrugged her shoulders.
For some reason, when he’d made his own arguments, he’d felt…unique.  Special.  Like he was the only one who could see the truth.  Now—now he was remembering Gordon’s pinched face every time he saw Jason with an injury, all the news reporters that called Batman the worst thing that had happened to Gotham, the comments from Leaguers uncomfortable with child heroes.
Jason wasn’t entirely sure when he’d switched sides in the debate.
~#~
It took another week before Jason spotted Batman again.  His patrols were all over the place, no discernable pattern to them, but when he heard rumors of a planned bank robbery in the Diamond District, Jason knew where to go.
He arrived and found a nook on the rooftop across the street to watch the action.  Sure enough, Batman and Nightwing showed up moments after the alarm was tripped, and Jason watched them take down the would-be robbers.
Batman didn’t look crazy, his movements were as swift and economical as ever as he dismantled the operation, engaged the leader, and began punching him in the face again and again and again.  Jason stared, frozen to the spot with more than shock as he watched Batman pulverize a group of robbers for the crime of breaking into an empty store.
Nightwing secured his opponents and moved to intercede, trying to get between Batman and his victim.  Batman ignored him, and when Nightwing laid a hand on his arm to get him to stop, he flung the other vigilante back so hard Nightwing nearly stumbled into the street.
Nightwing didn’t move to intercept again.
Batman stopped when the man was no longer twitching, and dropped the body where it was, turning on his heel sharply to exit the scene.  Nightwing watched him go, and Jason could see the way the younger man crumpled in on himself as Batman walked away.  Hand over his face, Nightwing slowly went after him, every line of his body screaming of exhaustion.
Robin croaks it.
Jason’s breathing had gone tight and shallow.
Batman goes cuckoo.
In the back of his head, something was laughing.  Isn’t it a great joke, it said between giggles.  Isn’t it the greatest joke of all?

for post-kinktober prompts—how do you feel about jaytim & a predator/prey dynamic? the particulars of that are in your hands, especially since you’ve yet to write a fic i didn’t enjoy <3
The sweat dripping from Tim’s hair stings his eyes with salt.
He doesn’t know how long he’s been running, but it’s been a while since he gave up on presentability. His lungs are burning. The ambient noise of the city has been swallowed by the beating of his heart in his ears. Every step he takes turns his body heavier and heavier, and he can tell that it won’t be long before it fails him altogether. He leaps from one building to the next on shaky legs, the taste of iron rich in his mouth—
A hard body collides into him mid-air.
His assailant plucks him out of the sky with an easy strength that reminds him of Kon. Tim tries to use their momentum to roll away when they land — to escape, not to fight, not this time, not when he's so obviously outmatched — but he fails. His head spins as he finds himself pinned to the rooftop on his belly, panting into the gravel with his arms twisted behind his back.
“Gotcha,” the Red Hood hums into his ear, the modulated voice coldly steady.
Tim’s heart quickens impossibly. Fuck. He’s been caught. There’s no way for him to free himself, not without breaking something. He should have left his pride behind and called Batman and Robin for help. He should have run for Cass's patrol route instead of trying to reach his Nest. He should have done anything but try to outrun the Hood on his home turf.
He hears a click and a hiss behind him, then the sound of Jason's helmet hitting the ground. He scrunches his eyes shut on instinct as Jason leans down to lick his cheek. His tongue is warm and wet. By contrast, the air feels freezing when it hits the trail of saliva on Tim's skin.
“You gave me a good chase, little bird," Jason praises. His luminescent eyes give the night an unsettling green glow. "It's going to make taking you all the more enjoyable."
"You can't do this," Tim tries. "You won't get away with it."
Jason laughs. "Yeah? Who's going to stop me?"
"Batman knows where I am. You know that."
Jason ties Tim's wrists together with the ease of practice. He finds the closure of Tim's suit without a hint of hesitation and pulls the zipper down far enough to expose his throat and the curve of one shoulder.
"And where are you? On your territory. Two blocks away from your own bed. Do you think he'll be worried when he sees that your tracker has stopped moving here?"
"There are cameras everywhere."
"Not in the Alley, there aren't."
Jason straddles Tim's thighs, his weight heavy and foreboding. Leather whispers behind Tim's back, then Jason's hands find his throat. They don't linger, but the threat of suffocation is enough for his pulse to spike… right before humiliation blooms in his stomach as he realizes that Jason is collaring him.
"You can't just—You can't just claim me like this. Let me go."
"Birdie, I caught you. I'll do whatever I damn well please."
The collar falls into place, its buckle burningly cool against Tim's nape. Tim's body goes pliant as a wave of submission crashes into him.
So this is it, then.
He lost.
Oh, of course, he could hurt himself. Thrash, bite, fight like a trapped wolf gnawing its own paw off. He could spit and scream, and hope for anyone to stumble on them. But he's so tired. His head goes fuzzy as the last dredges of adrenaline fail him, and he lets the buzz fill him from head to toe.
Jason hums in approval. Then, with a possessive growl, he sinks his teeth into Tim's exposed shoulder.
———
(Later, when they're done, the collar will come off. Jason will help Tim clean himself up, and massage his sore arms. He'll carry him to their shared bed and compensate for chasing him and fucking him to exhaustion by feeding him and holding him safe and sound.
He'll be kind, considerate, and tame. Nothing like the ruthless predator Tim asked him to be.
But Tim will remember the chase. He'll remember the fear, the exhilaration, and the rush of submission. He'll remember being owned, and helpless in all the ways he never dared to want.
And somewhere, deep down, he'll hope that his skin will hold the shape of Jason's teeth and remember it too.)

drive-in movie
Tumblr media
fic content: slight cursing, make-outs, steve being cute, slight smut but nothing too graphic
steve harrington x reader (with she/her pronouns)
have a fic idea/request? send it my way!
she met steve when he was working at scoop's ahoy. robin helped him get the guts to finally ask her out, since she thought she was making it plainly obvious she wanted to go out with him. however, the new couple found issues when trying to get to second base. either someone had to leave or someone interrupted them and it killed the mood.
this time, no one was bound to bother them. steve honked his horn to alert her that he was at her home. he was taking her to a drive-in movie. friday the 13th part 6 was just released and they were dying to see it.
she spritzed some of steve's favorite perfume and adjusted her skirt before running out the door. she waved goodbye to her parents and promised she'd be home by curfew: 12am. it was only 6pm so they had hours of time together. it was like she was under his spell, she couldn't get enough of him.
little did she know, he felt the exact same way.
his face brightened when he saw her running down the driveway and crashing into the front seat and immediately putting her lips to his.
"well hello to you too," he spoke between kisses.
"i'm just excited to hang out with you tonight and watch jason vorhees slash some people," she giggled.
since there was no center console, she rested herself on steve's shoulder as his right arm dangles over her shoulder. the sweet sound of kate bush lightly plays through the speakers as she hums the lyrics. every now and then, she leaves small kisses starting from the edge of his lips down to his neck. she couldn't help but stare at his side profile beaming from the sunset, his hair slightly waving from the wind due to the open window. god, he was beautiful.
she had high hopes of not being bothered tonight.
the parking lot was already crowded, but steve somehow managed to get the perfect spot. luckily, most people don't even watch the movie as they make out with their partners in the cars. no one cares here what the hell people do.
he put the car in park and shut off the car. he always likes to get places early, especially the movies. he's always worried that the snack line will be way too long and he will miss the beginning of the movie.
"shall we go grab some snacks?" he asked.
"of course, the popcorn is really calling my name," she giggled.
the couple walked arm in arm to the concession stand where there were many people in line, steve reminded her of the reason he gets places too early. she playfully rolled her eyes at the comment but understood his reasoning.
steve bought popcorn, cokes for the two of them, red vines and some M&M's. he knows her movie theater cravings. he let her in the car first and he followed suit, just in time for the movie to start. the sun was setting as jason made an appearance on the screen. the only sounds heard were the chewing of the popcorn and the screaming of the serial killer's victim.
one part of the movie made her jump, cuddling into steve's body. he held on to her and whispered that if jason was real, he would protect her no doubt. his kind words turned her on a bit. she cupped his face and leaned in for a kiss. tiny unprompted kisses turned into more steamy kisses. he guided his tongue against her bottom lip, hoping she would trust him to take good care of her. she leaned her head back against the seat and let him slightly hover over her. his one arm rests on the back of the seat as her head rests on top. his other wraps around her waist, gripping her top. he gained enough courage to caress her bare thigh, teasing his way up to her clothed center. the grip she had on his hair grew tighter as she wanted more. however, she did wish that there weren't hundreds of people around them. just before he got any further, they heard a knock on the window, scaring the hell out of the both of them.
it was dustin and his friends. she could tell steve was pissed at him for interrupting them. she groaned.
"what, dude??" steve rolled the window and asked his curly-haired friend what he wanted.
"can we sit with you guys? we snuck into the movie and we have nowhere to hide from jack and those assholes from kicking us out," he begged.
steve turned to look at her, he could never say no to dustin, especially when he was in trouble. his apologetic look won as he unlocked the doors for dustin and his buddies to get in. she sighed as she was upset that she was left with "blue balls," as she was sure he had those too. she did admire, however, the friendship dustin and steve had, he was always so good to him about giving advice or helping him through situations.
the kids ducked down as she and steve paid attention to the movie as if they weren't hiding four people in the backseat. his hand gripped hers as he brought it up for a kiss.
"ohhh, you guys got red vines?" dustin yelped, grabbing some out of the cupholder.
"all yours," she grinned.
once the movie was over, steve drove dustin and his friends home, leaving the two of them alone once again, in her driveway.
"i'm sorry about them, but you know i can't say no to him."
she shook her head, "no i know," she smiled, "it's important to help out friends when they need it, i do wish, however, we got to finish where we left off."
"you and me both, believe me. i got fucking blue balls over here," he giggled.
she looked at her house, all the lights were turned off. her quick moves caught him off guard as she straddled him. his hands instantly went to her waist, and slightly lifted up her shirt to feel her skin. as she began to kiss him, she couldn't stop, and neither could steve.
"god, i want you so bad," steve moaned into her mouth. she felt his hands travel to her ass and under her skirt, "i've wanted to do that all night."
she looked at her watch which read 11:50. rolling her eyes at her curfew times, she had to put a pause on their actions.
"believe me, so do i, stevie. but i have to go. can we finish this tomorrow?"
"of course, i'll pick you up here," he said, helping her out of the car. he leaned against it as she wrapped her arms around him one last time before giving him wet kisses. she let go as he watched her run up to the front door and unlocked the door. she blew him one last kiss and shut the door.
both of them were extremely excited about what was to come.

Mending a Family 31/?
Prev | Next
Dick walked through the cemetery holding a bouquet. He stopped in front of a grave. An angel looked over an empty coffin.
It felt wrong to visit Jason’s grave when he was still alive, but it was the only way he had to talk to his younger brother now. He put the bouquet down and then sat down. Dick didn’t really know what to do now. He didn’t even know why he had come to the grave in the first place.
Was it to ask for forgiveness? To ask why?
“I’m in therapy now.”
Silence. Did he expect anything else? Maybe.
“I know Roy wasn’t telling me to go to therapy out of the goodness of his heart, but…I needed to do it, I guess. Dinah’s a good therapist. She cuts through the bullshit and has no problem calling me out on my crap.”
The wind blew through the grass.
“I’m trying to get Bruce to go, too. It’s going as well as you can imagine.”
The angel stared at Dick, mocking him.
“Me and Tim take turns patrolling Crime Alley. It’s not too bad, but we already see cracks in your absence.”
At first, Red Hood’s lieutenants had taken over after Jason’s disappearance, and things had stayed more or less the same. However, the longer Red Hood was away from Crime Alley, the more criminals pushed boundaries, and the more the crime rate increased. Thankfully, having at least two Bats visit the place kept it from returning to its pre-Red Hood days.
They knew that the crime rate would keep increasing, but between Nightwing and Red Robin, they hoped it wouldn’t get too bad.
Bruce still refused to enter Crime Alley. Dick didn’t think it was only because of his parents.
“I’m sorry, Little Wing. If we had tried to integrate you into the family, you might still be here. I shouldn’t have kept Mar’i’s existence from you. Me and Bruce should’ve done better in welcoming you into the family.”
Too late now, he thought.
Dick and Bruce had thought that Jason would always be around. They thought they had time to bring Jason back into the fold. Now, he was gone in the wind. God only knew where he was. Well, God and Roy. He had a (possible) kid with him, and Dick couldn’t blame Jason for keeping the boy away from the family when Dick had done the same to Jason with Mar’i.
Well, not unless he wanted to be a hypocrite.
What else is new, his brain whispered.
Dick sighed and got up, dusting the dirt from his pants. He walked up to the angel and put his hand on it.
“I hope you’re happy and safe. Wherever you are, Little Wing.”
Thousands of miles away, while he was working on his car, Jason felt a chill go down his spine.
“Someone is walking on my grave,” he whispered. He blinked. How did he know that? Suddenly, the scent of flowers reached his nose. He looked around and saw nothing but oily rags and parts of cars scattered all over the place.
Jason went back to working on his car, a feeling of uneasiness filling him.
Back in Gotham, Dick wore his Nightwing suit and patrolled Crime Alley that night. He stopped a few muggings. He helped a woman return home after being followed and stopped a drug dealer from selling to a few kids.
One of Jason’s major rules was not selling to kids. The cracks were widening in Crime Alley with Red Hood’s absence.
Bruce, Tim, and Dick knew that Jason had been able to enforce these rules because a. he wasn’t affiliated with the Bats, b. he knew Crime Alley inside and out, and c. the people had accepted him.
They still didn’t trust Batman and the birds that flew with them. Not really.
Nightwing sat on top of a building overlooking Crime Alley. Thankfully, it had quieted down.
He tensed when he heard someone beside him before he noticed it was Black Bat. He relaxed a bit, still overlooking Crime Alley.
They sat in silence, letting the stillness of the area overcome them.
“Tell me about him,” she said suddenly.
Dick thought about it for a moment. Where would he even start?
“He loves reading. He loves the classics; his favorite is Pride and Prejudice.”
Black Bat cocked her head to the side, “Really? I never would’ve pegged him as a bookworm.”
 Dick nodded.
“Yeah, he was obsessed with reading. When he was younger, he wouldn’t go on patrol unless he had finished his schoolwork, the nerd. He wanted to go to college before—you know, before that happened.”
That was the crux of the matter: how different would things have been if Jason had never died?
Would he have graduated by now? Jason was brilliant, and Dick had no issues in believing that his bookworm of a brother would’ve graduated sooner than most. Would he be getting his master’s by now? Would he have a girlfriend? A boyfriend? Would the child he was with be surrounded by aunts and uncles? By his cousin? Well, there was no point in thinking ‘what ifs’ now. It was too late for that.
He felt arms around him.
“He’ll come back. I know.”
Dick tried to smile.
They didn’t know that, though, did they?
Jason was mostly out of it the rest of the day. He felt something was missing.
No, he knew what was missing. His family back in Gotham. He could survive, even thrive, with just Danny, Ellie, and Jazz. With Roy and Raven. But, a part of him, the child in him, missed his dad and older brother. He missed the possible relationship he could’ve had with Bruce’s other children, his other siblings if he hadn’t fucked up so badly.
He felt arms around him. Danny was looking at him with worry in his eyes. Even Jazz and Ellie were staring at him.
“What’s wrong, daddy?”
Looking into his son’s blue eyes, Jason knew he could never return to Gotham. They would take Danny away from him. Living away from his family was hard, but he wouldn’t survive if Danny were taken from him.
“Nothing, lad, daddy was just feeling a bit nostalgic.”
He looked into Danny’s eyes, “But I’m okay, now, chum. Daddy is okay now.”
Jason refused to have his son and small family taken from him.

Savior Complex
When Bruce comes back from the dead, Dick goes nonverbal. Nobody seems to have the time to notice.
Things were supposed to be better now that Bruce was back.
And they were. They were. Dick knew it was selfish to feel anything other than relieved. Tim had started smiling again, Jason had actually come home and stayed, the girls had all lost the tension in their shoulders, and Alfred had stopped looking so unbearably haunted.
And Bruce was alive. His father was alive, back home like nothing had changed, their broken little family gradually repairing the damage that had been done, putting everything back together piece by piece.
But the weight that had settled over Dick’s chest ever since he’d been told Batman was dead, that it was his responsibility to put the cowl on, still hadn’t lifted. It had only gotten heavier.
Selfish, that voice in his head whispered every time he thought about saying something about it. Everything’s always about you, isn’t it?
Of course things were going to take a little time to go back to normal. Of course everyone was going to need a little time to forgive Dick.
He’d been the one calling the shots while Bruce was gone, and he was well aware that some of his decisions had been the wrong ones. He was the oldest, the mantle of Batman had gone to him (he hadn’t wanted it, he’d never wanted it, not for a second and it wasn’t fair that he hadn’t even been given a choice) and with that came the safety of his Robin and the rest of the bats.
And so when Tim had grown obsessive, adamant that Bruce was still alive, Dick had made his choice.
Taking Robin away had broken Tim, a deep anger shining in his little brother’s eyes that Dick had never seen before, the two of them shouting themselves hoarse in the empty cave until Tim had stormed upstairs and Dick had collapsed on the cold floor, the weight of the world sending him crashing back down to earth in an undignified heap.
He’d wanted Tim by his side more than anything. He had Jason, but Red Hood’s location and schedule were unreliable, and his methods still weren’t something Dick was always comfortable with. Cass, Stephanie, and Barbara were still constants, steady and safe, but they weren’t Robins. They had their own identities, their own skills and motives.
Damian had taken the mantle of Robin without a word, falling into the role easily, the name fitting like a glove. It was exactly what Dick had needed at the time, but it still terrified him to see his baby brother, still so young, still not ready, put on the suit years too soon.
But keeping Tim on as Robin would have been selfish. No matter how much Tim begged- begged Dick not to take this from him, begged him to believe that Bruce was alive (Dick had been the one to identify his body, right alongside Clark and Diana. He’d buried their father’s body and Tim wanted him to have hope) Dick wouldn’t be swayed. He was Batman now, that was what they wanted, and the decision was his.
It was the only option, because he’d seen that kind of delusion before. He’d seen it in Bruce in the weeks that followed Jason’s death. The panic, the desperation, a grieving mind unable to grasp onto the reality of the loss it had suffered so suddenly, frantically latching onto false hope.
It was going to get Tim killed. He needed time, needed to grieve and process the death of his father properly, or Dick was going to lose him too.
And Dick had been certain that he would shatter if he lost one more person. He was barely holding on as it was.
He’d recognized the look on Tim’s face a heartbeat too late, a twisted expression of hatred and cold fury that had been reserved for the first person that had taken the mantle away.
“You’re acting just like Jack, you know,” Tim had snarled, almost unrecognizable, and Dick’s heart had stopped. “Maybe even worse than him.”
It had been the last thing his baby brother had said to him, Dick’s worst nightmare come to life, because then Tim had been gone too. He’d left, chasing his delusions, searching for a father that was buried under their home.
And Dick had been left with the weight of the world, a cowl he’d never wanted sitting heavy on his shoulders, surrounded by a broken family and a city looking to him for justice. He’d never felt more alone in his life.
And then Bruce was back.
 Tim had been right, smiling like the first ray of sunlight through the clouds, and Dick wasn’t sure if he was supposed to feel guilty for not believing him in the first place. He didn’t know if he was supposed to apologize.
Apparently, it didn’t matter. Tim wasn’t speaking to him either way.
But that was fine. He just needed time, Dick could understand that. Bruce was back, happy to take back his mask and let Dick return to his own.
He was back and things were just… supposed to return to normal.
And they were, gradually. For everyone else at least. Dick was finding it a little more difficult to readjust when everyone was clearly so angry with him.
Tim refused to be in the same room as him, gathering up his things and stalking to his bedroom or to the cave anytime Dick so much as breathed the same air as him. The only time they were seen together was during meals, and Tim spent the entire time either pointedly ignoring his existence or sending deadly glares across the table when he thought Alfred wasn’t looking.
He had every right to be angry, Dick reasoned with himself. It didn’t matter that Dick had been left floundering with a responsibility he was too young and unprepared for, suddenly the head of a family he was terrified to lose, desperate to keep Tim alive above all else.
He hadn’t listened. He hadn’t- couldn’t - believe in Tim’s desperate hope. If he’d just set aside his doubt and grief, if he’d just helped Tim look, Bruce could have been home safe sooner. Dick would still have his brother.
He needed to apologize. He wanted to, and he’d tried, doing everything he could to finally talk things out with Tim, but he may as well have been invisible. The most he got was a scowl as Tim pushed past him.
So he’d let Tim come to him on his own time, no matter how long it took. It didn’t matter that it felt like a knife to the chest every time he was ignored or talked over or glared at.
And then it wasn’t just Tim.
After their initial reunion, after tight embraces and choked apologies and explanations nobody could even begin to let sink in, the usual tenderness and fond smiles had been ripped away.
Bruce wasn’t bothering to keep it a secret that he wasn’t happy with how Dick had handled things at home. He’d been the one to promise Tim the mantle of Robin would never be stripped from him again, that he’d step down on his own time. He’d made his opinion very clear, eyes tight and exhausted throughout the lecture, body still weak and recovering from wherever the hell it was he’d been these last few months.
Dick knew he deserved the disappointment. He’d had no right to take Robin away, no right to push his brother to his limit when he knew he was going to lose him, but…
But Bruce had been dead. He’d been dead, and there had been no Batman, and Dick hadn’t known what to do.
Dick could handle Bruce’s cold stares, curt greetings and terse orders over the next couple weeks as he integrated back into the family, ignoring the furrowed brows and skeptical looks out on patrol.
He was angry, and he had just as much of a right to be as Tim did. If he needed to take out his frustration by being a little bit more stern, stricter on schedules and cases and fights, his words more biting than they needed to be, Dick understood.
And if it was only directed at Dick, Bruce’s warm smiles and gentle praise given freely to everyone else, then Dick… Dick could handle that too.
He wasn’t sure what he’d done to warrant Jason’s fury, but he knew he probably deserved it just the same. There always seemed to be something. Dick was always doing something wrong lately.
Jason scoffing in the face of Dick’s smile, narrowing his eyes in a scathing glare and storming off in a huff like Dick had taunted him instead of offering a simple greeting was enough to send Nightwing scrambling to the nearest bathroom, halfway to a panic attack by the time he locked the door behind him and sank to the floor.
But that was fine too. Because Jason was getting along with the rest of the family, even his relationship with Bruce better than it had been in years, and Dick had never seen his brother look so relaxed.
As long as Dick wasn’t in the room with them.
Cass was always harder for Dick to read, never one to be openly angry, but it wasn’t hard to come to the conclusion that she was annoyed with him too. Or maybe she was just picking up on the other’s behavior, picking sides and avoiding him to be safe. Stephanie seemed to be doing the same, always glued to her sister’s side.
Dick didn’t have the energy to try and piece together every little thing he’d done wrong, and with everyone treating him like he was invisible or an unwanted nuisance, he didn’t want to take his chances trying to approach either of them.
Cass and Stephanie had fought at his side when he’d put the cowl on, and god knew he’d made mistake after mistake on patrol. Cass could take her pick of reasons to be pissed at her older brother.
Barabara at least didn’t seem to have an issue with him, and Dick didn’t have words for how grateful he was for that.
But Barabara was just… so busy. He barely saw her outside meals, and even then her appearances were rare. Oracle was scrambling to clean up the mess Bruce’s disappearance and reappearance had caused, always overworked and exhausted.
Dick had made his way into the cave while she was buried in a new case file, (making sure that Tim wasn’t there first, ignoring the way his heart ached at the precaution) with the intent of gently coaxing Barabara away from the computers.
He should have seen it coming, Oracle already run ragged, but Dick flinched like he’d been hit when Barbara snapped at him, whirling around with an ice cold glare.
“Dick, get out,” she’d practically snarled, seething with animosity he’d grown uncomfortably accustomed to lately. “I don’t want your help!”
It wasn’t anything personal, Dick knew that. There was no reason for his eyes to start burning, for his chest to grow tight and heavy. He’d forced his best smile, the type reserved for paparazzi and pushy interviewers, wished her luck and did everything he could not to run out of the cave like he was being chased.
It was fine. She wasn’t angry at him- Barbara would track him down eventually to apologize, and then they’d grab food and the entire exchange would be forgotten.
Except Barbara never tracked him down, never apologized, and Dick found himself avoiding her like the plague.
And that was fine too. Everyone just needed a little time. It would all go back to normal soon.
And then Dick stopped talking. And that was about as far from normal as he could get.
He wasn’t even sure when it had started, most of his days spent in silence now anyway, only occasionally offering a quiet greeting or thank you to Alfred when they passed each other.
He’d only noticed it after patrol one night, Bruce asking for a routine status report from everyone who was out that night over the comms. Dick had waited patiently for his turn, hating how the sound of his family’s voices made his gut churn with anxiety now, and opened his mouth to send the all clear.
Only to choke on his own words, nothing but silence escaping his parted lips.
Dick had snapped his mouth shut, hands suddenly hot and clammy under his gloves, throat unbearably tight, and tongue like heavy stone against his teeth.
He sent a text to Oracle, reassuring her that he was fine and asking her to relay a message to the others that his comms had just been damaged. It was a flimsy lie, but he may as well take advantage of being treated like an afterthought.
There was no change, no improvement for the rest of the night, Dick barely managing a pathetic sounding whine from his own chest on the ride home.
Thankfully the rest of the team had already dispersed by the time he pulled into the cave, the sunlight slowly filtering in over Gotham’s desolate rooftops.
He got away with a quick smile and a wave to Batman as he passed the Cave’s computers, his chest sparking to life with something achingly warm when Bruce paused to look him over, at least still caring enough to make sure Dick was uninjured after patrol.
The bare minimum shouldn’t feel so nice.
“You alright?” Bruce asked, and Dick had froze, completely taken aback despite the tightness still lingering in his guardian’s voice. “Oracle said your comms were damaged.”
Dick plastered on his best smile, peeling off his mask and nodding absently in Bruce’s direction as he put away his weapons.
Bruce was silent a moment, watching carefully before turning away with a sigh. “Alright. Make sure they’re working before you go out again.”
He’d sent a noncommittal thumbs up, well aware something so informal would send Bruce up the wall. Maybe if Dick was anyone else, Bruce would have cared enough to say something.
He’d expected to just sleep it off, to wake up in the afternoon that next day and regain his voice like he’d never lost it, but the panicked dread in his chest only grew when there proved to be no change the rest of the day.
Or the day after that. Or the rest of the week.
Dick wasn’t unfamiliar with going nonverbal. Bruce had episodes like this, less now than he’d had when Dick was younger, and Alfred had made sure Dick knew how to hold a basic conversation in sign language for when his dad went mute for days at a time.
It had happened to Tim before, and Cass had been completely mute when they’d first brought her in, still occasionally more comfortable in silence and hand gestures than anything verbal.
Dick hadn’t had anything like this happen to him in years. Not since the pain of his parent’s death had still been fresh, his life with Bruce foreign and daunting.
It had never lasted more than a few hours, but Bruce had always been right there with him, a steadying presence at his side, keeping the panic at bay, always so gentle and reassuring.
Dick had no doubt that he’d still have that kind of help from Bruce if he asked, if this had happened six months ago. If Dick hadn’t fucked everything up beyond repair.
It was selfish enough that he was going nonverbal over problems that he had created all on his own. He wasn’t going to make it anyone else’s problem.
And it wasn’t like he had to do much to hide it. Nobody was talking to him, anyway.
“Master Richard.”
Dick jumped, pulled from his thoughts and freezing at the top of the stairs. Alfred’s habit of appearing from the shadows was almost as bad as Batman’s sometimes.
Alfred’s hands were folded behind his back, a barely there pinch of his eyebrows giving away his concern, and Dick’s heart sped up when he realized the butler intended on having a conversation. It had been over a week since Dick had been able to say a word, and the idea of even trying made him nauseous.
He raised his eyebrows, signaling for Alfred to continue, and the older man’s shoulders dropped slightly.
“I only wanted to check in on you,” Alfred said, and Dick was not going to tear up over something so small, a meaningless show of kindness. It was Alfred’s job. “I’ve noticed you’ve been a bit distant lately.”
Dick just shrugged, not able to do much else, fighting to keep the lazy smile from slipping. He might have missed it, if he hadn’t known the butler so long, but something in Alfred’s eyes hardened.
“Master Richard,” Alfred said again, and Dick quickly averted his gaze. “Forgive me, but I hardly think it’s fair to take this out on me as well.”
Dick blinked at the floor, furrowing his brow as Alfred’s cold words hit him like a bucket of ice water, leaving nothing but confusion washing over him.
What? He wanted to ask, scrambling to make sense of the sudden hostility. What the hell are you talking about? But he couldn't even bring himself to open his mouth, instead forcing himself to lift his head and glance up warily at the butler.
“I understand that things are difficult right now,” Alfred continued, and Dick realized too late that this was quickly becoming a lecture, not a check-in. “And that things are… a bit tense with the rest of the family. But they’ve all managed to work through their differences. They’ve repaired what we lost. Things are good, sir. Perhaps if you… put in the same effort to-”
Dick stumbled back like he’d been slapped, back finding the cold stair railing as his eyes went wide, pooling with hot tears he didn’t even bother to try to blink away.
Put in the effort? Him? Like that wasn’t the only thing he’d been doing for weeks? Trying over and over again to get Tim to talk to him, to have just one civil conversation, apologizing time and time again and holding out hope that his baby brother would at least look him in the eyes again one day.
Doing every little thing he could to get back on Bruce’s good side, frantically trying to explain his reasoning for the things he’d done under the cowl without making it sound like excuses, following every little instruction without question, every order, grasping for any chance to prove himself still worthy to be on the receiving end of Batman’s love.
Jumping through hoops to try to undo whatever had made the rest of his siblings so angry with him, keeping a smile on his face anytime he passed them, desperate for Jason or Damian or Cass to just smile at him again.
He’d kept an eye on them, helping how he could from a distance until they decided he was welcome in the family again because that was what they’d wanted. They’d all made themselves perfectly clear.
He’d done everything he could, putting himself in the line of fire just to try to get Barbara to take a break despite knowing, deep down, that it would only be met with more anger.
Nothing he’d done had been enough, it was never enough, and now Alfred was mad at him too. Alfred, who had more patience and love than anyone Dick had ever met in his life.
Dick couldn’t breathe.
Through his rapidly blurring vision, Dick thought he saw the hardened look slowly fade from Alfred’s face, something softer taking its place as his breathing hitched.
“Richard-”
Whatever he’d been going to say was interrupted by heavy footsteps, followed by an all too familiar huff, and Dick didn’t need to turn to know Jason had stopped in the hallway with his arms crossed, watching the exchange with scrutinizing eyes.
“So,” Jason said after a heartbeat, and Dick did his best not to flinch. “Finally lecturing the golden boy?”
Alfred sighed, the sound sharp and curt, and Dick felt like he was invisible again. “This is not a lecture.”
“Then what the fuck is the point in talking to him?”
“Master Jason-”
“No,” Jason snapped, and suddenly his brother was right in front of him, eyes narrowed in poorly concealed fury. “He needs to get it through his thick skull that this silent treatment shit is fucking stupid!”
“Language,” Alfred said, but it sounded weary and defeated. “Perhaps-”
“He’s being a child.” And then Jason was staring right at him, and Dick couldn’t bring himself to look away. “We have the right to be pissed at you after everything that happened, Dickhead. Things are weird right now, if anyone should get that it’s you. The least you could do is admit you fucked up with Tim and give us all some time. Ignoring everyone to try and make us feel like shit isn’t fair. You know damn well Bruce has enough on his plate right now, and I don’t have time for your bullshit either. No one does.”
That's what they thought? That he was giving them the silent treatment out of spite like they hadn’t been the ones to happily pretend he didn’t even exist?
It didn’t matter that he’d never lashed out like that before. It didn’t matter that he’d never consider doing anything to hurt his family like that. It didn’t matter that he’d spent weeks trying to get someone, anyone to talk to him.
They were mad at him for what he’d done to Tim. He understood that, he knew he shouldn’t have taken Robin away. He should have believed him when he said Bruce was alive. He should have listened.
But nobody else had had to watch what Jason’s death did to Bruce. Nobody else had seen the episodes of delusion and panic, insisting that someone long dead, buried less than a mile away, was alive and well. That their death had never happened.
Nobody but Dick had to be terrified of living through that again. Nobody but Dick seemed to understand that he’d been trying to save Tim’s life.
Dick just stared back at Jason and said nothing, because he couldn’t say anything. He was fairly sure trying to sign a response would only make his brother more furious, because how dare Dick be the one breaking down when he was the one always hurting everyone else.
Jason’s eyes darkened, and suddenly Dick was being shoved back against the railing, refusing to let himself cry out when his back hit the wood. His brother was already turning away, shoulders hunched as he stalked down the stairs.
“Jesus Christ,” he muttered, before throwing another glare over his shoulder. “You’re fucking unbelievable, Grayson.”
Dick couldn’t move, staring at the empty spot at the top of the stairs long after Jason had disappeared. His vision was growing blurrier by the second, breaths labored and spiraling into something dangerously close to hyperventilating, and he shakily wrapped his arms around his middle in a futile attempt to provide any sort of comfort.
“Master Richard,” Alfred said softly, far more gentle than Dick deserved. “Is everything alright, dear boy? Is there something else going on?”
Dick didn’t even bother trying for a response, dropping his gaze and keeping it glued to the carpet as he pushed himself away from the stairs and down the hall, stumbling slightly when his knees buckled. He slipped back into his room, wondering why he’d even bothered to leave in the first place, shutting the door behind him without another sound.

Things came to a head during their next mission.
It was a routine drug bust, a rapidly growing organization Bruce had been staking out for a couple of weeks now, tracking the heart of the operation to an old abandoned warehouse near the docks.
It was something two or three of them could have dismantled on their own, but Batman seemed worried about hostages- something about whispers of the Penguin being connected, the crime lord growing desperate- and so Bruce had asked the rest of them to accompany him.
Dick was given his orders in the cave while they were suiting up, but other than that nobody said a word to him. At least his family had finally stopped pretending he simply didn’t exist, choosing instead to openly glare and scowl and glower at his every little move.
That was fine. Everything was fine.
The mission itself wasn’t particularly eventful. There had been more men, more guns, than Dick had been expecting, but it was a game plan so familiar Dick could have executed it in his sleep. Fortunate, considering he’d felt dead on his feet long before he’d lost his voice. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d been able to shut his eyes and rest.
They’d waited to strike until Cass and Tim had confirmed there were no hostages anywhere in the building, just antsy, impatient men armed to the teeth, patrolling every corner.
Batman gave the order and they sprang from the shadows in sync, the flimsy overhead lights flickering, their family moving as one, lethal together, like nothing had changed.
Dick had missed this feeling, of knowing he was a part of them, crucial to their movements, an essential piece of the family. For a moment, the weight and grief lifted from his shoulders, chest just light enough for him to take a breath for the first time in what felt like weeks.
And yet he couldn’t help but wonder if things would be going smoother if he hadn’t come along. He wondered if they even really needed him here. They certainly didn’t want him.
The goons were taken down in less than fifteen minutes, the few who were still conscious secured and left by the door for the cops, Batman finally dropping his guard and ordering the others to sweep the rest of the building before dispersing.
And that, of course, was when everything started to go wrong.
Dick had grappled back to the building's rafters, keeping an eye out for approaching sirens and watching his siblings work, content to be their silent eyes and ears until they parted ways.
His vantage point was the only reason he’d seen the attack coming.
Somehow, despite Bruce’s thoroughness, they must have miscounted, allowed one of the thugs to evade capture and hide out until everything settled.
Dick could see him now, slinking through the shadows towards the shattered window, and a chill ran down his spine when he saw the glint in the man’s eye, gaze locking onto where Red Robin was standing guard, the vigilante’s back to the thug, distracted by whatever Oracle was saying in his ear. Dick was moving before his mind even caught up with his body, barely aware of what he was doing.
Tim would have had time to move. The man was slow, shaken up and unsteady, and Red Robin was more than capable of dodging the shot before it came and knocking out his assailant in the blink of an eye.
All Dick had to do was warn him.
But no matter how much he tried, desperately fighting to scream himself hoarse, burning tears of frustration welling in his eyes as he vaulted forward, not a sound left his mouth.
There wasn’t time. He didn’t have time.
Nightwing slammed into the thug’s side, both of them fighting to keep their footing as they stumbled across the concrete. Dick grabbed both of his wrists and wrenched them downward, swerving to plant himself firmly in between Tim and the barrel of the gun.
The man was frantic, eyes wide and bloodshot under his ski mask, fighting like a wild animal. He was heavier than Nightwing, using his weight and uncoordinated flailing to send Dick stumbling back, struggling just to pry the gun away so he could-
He heard the shot before he felt the pain.
“Nightwing!”
Dick’s back hit the concrete, the warehouse ceiling swimming into focus just as he registered the agony in his side, shaky hands hovering over the puddle of crimson blossoming just above his hip.
There was a blur of movement somewhere above him, and Nightwing was distantly aware that he needed to move, get back on his feet and get the gun out of the man’s hand before he landed a killing blow and went after someone else, but suddenly every bone in his body was just as unresponsive as his voice.
A body dropped to the ground a few feet away, an awful sounding thud echoing in his ears, and Dick pulled his gaze away as a barrage of color was suddenly rushing forward.
Red Robin was crouching in front of him now, alive and unharmed, and Dick let himself breathe, pained and trembling as it was. Tim was staring at him in horror, shoulders tense as his gaze dropped to the bullet wound. The fear and concern in his eyes shined as clear as day, even through the mask, and for a second, just a second, it was like everything was okay again. Like he had his brother back. Like Tim still cared.
And then, like a string had been cut, it was gone again, Red Robin’s face twisting into a scowl. “What the fuck is wrong with you, Nightwing?”
I don’t know, Dick wanted to say, more than anything. I don’t know. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry, Tim.
And then there was a weight being pressed against his side, blinding pain shooting through his body, and Dick lost himself to the pull of unconsciousness.
-
He couldn’t remember how he got back to the Batcave, deposited on a cot in the medical wing, but it wasn’t hard to put the pieces together.
Dick could vaguely recall the car ride back, filtering in and out of awareness, voices floating all around him, all of them distantly familiar, all of them furious. They were always furious with him now. He was so tired.
“Put pressure on the wound!” Someone had shouted, and the pressure on his stomach had worsened, the pain dizzying.
There’d been an awful choking sound, something that sounded like a strangled scream, nearly drowned out by the familiar hum of the Batmobile’s engine being pushed to its limits. Dick thought it might have been coming from him.
“Dick! Calm down!” Another voice, just as angry. He hadn’t been able to recognize who it was. “You’re okay! You’re okay, we’ve got you. We’ve got you, Nightwing. Just breathe. Breathe! Please, just breathe. You’re gonna be okay!”
“You need to stop the bleeding.”
“What do you think I’m trying to do? Dick, calm down! It’s just me!”
Everything had been too much, the backseat of the car crowded and unfamiliar, voices too loud, passing streetlights a blur of piercing light.
“What’s wrong with him?” Someone else had said. “I had it handled! He just-”
“Wait until he’s not bleeding out to be pissed at him, Replacement! Jesus- just shut up and let me focus!”
Dick had lost track of the voices soon after that, letting himself slip, letting the pain and confusion wash over him like a blanket.
And now he was here, laying in the bat cave with the steady beep of the heart monitor filling the heavy silence, stripped of his suit with his aching body wrapped in bandages.
It felt like he’d been hit by a truck, the ever present cold weariness still settled across his chest, but he was alive. They’d brought him back home in one piece, like they always did.
He couldn’t find it in him to be relieved this time.
Maybe it would have been better if he’d died there, bleeding out on the warehouse floor. They wouldn’t need to be angry with him anymore, and he’d have gone out saving Tim. That was all he’d wanted to do in the first place.
Keeping Tim alive had been all that had mattered to Dick. Trying to keep him safe was what had lost him his baby brother in the first place.
Dick’s eyes flickered to the movement at the small medical bay’s entrance, forcing a small smile when Bruce froze, their eyes locking.
He tried to say something, anything, an apology at the tip of his tongue, but he wasn’t surprised when he couldn’t even open his mouth.
Something in Bruce’s eyes darkened, and Dick’s heart sank. “That was a ridiculous stunt you pulled.”
It was the only way to save Tim. I just wanted to be useful again. I just want to keep you all safe. But he couldn’t say that, no matter how badly he wanted to. All he could do was shrug.
Bruce sighed, visibly trying to compose himself, an unsteady hand moving to run through disheveled hair. Dick hadn’t seen much of Bruce the last few days, keeping to himself to save everyone the trouble, and now he could see how exhausted the man looked, the dark circles under his eyes worse than ever, expression far away, brow heavy.
Dick wondered if that was his fault too.
“This is getting out of hand, Dick,” Bruce said, and Dick couldn’t look away. “I expected better from you, especially out on the field.”
I know. I know, I'm sorry. I love you, I'm so sorry.
“I know I left you with a lot on your shoulders,” Bruce continued. “I know it wasn’t fair to you. I know, Dick. You made some mistakes and decisions that I wasn’t… thrilled about. I know I was harsh on you, and I’m- I’m sorry. But you did well. You did well despite your mistakes, just like I knew you would.”
Dick didn’t move, frozen on the cot, terrified of shattering the illusion, losing the hint of warmth in Bruce’s strained voice that he hadn’t heard in weeks.
“It’s fine that you’re angry,” Bruce said. “You can be mad at me. I don’t care. But I thought I could trust you to put that aside when you’re wearing the mask. You could have gotten yourself killed tonight.”
Dick just nodded, squeezing his hands into fists so tight he thought his nails might draw blood along his palms.
“You should know better.” The silence hung over them, heavy and unrelenting, and Dick didn’t raise his head again, even when Bruce gave a curt sigh. “How are you feeling?”
Dick just shrugged, each nonverbal response filling him with more and more shame, practically able to feel Bruce’s rising frustration from the other end of the room.
“Good,” he said, cold and gruff as he turned away. “When you’re ready to act like an adult we’ll be waiting upstairs for you. We need to talk.”
And with one last glance at the heart monitor he was gone, heavy footsteps echoing across the cave walls before fading, the hum of the elevator eventually falling away, leaving Nightwing to lay in silence.
He didn’t leave them waiting for long. Whatever painkillers they had him on were working wonders, letting him stand with only minimal discomfort for the moment, and the sooner he got this over with, the sooner he’d never have to do it again.
The halls were empty as he stumbled through them, everything eerily silent, and he came to the unsettling conclusion that they were all waiting for him, the harsh light from the living room guiding him forward like a beacon.
And just like he’d feared, there wasn’t a single person missing when he turned the corner.
Jason, Tim, Stephanie, and Damian had commandeered the largest couch, all sitting with their arms crossed and face twisted into scowls, and the aggression brimming in Tim’s eyes nearly sent Dick running. Barbara was next to them, looking unbearably disappointed, and Cass was curled up in the armchair, her expression unreadable. Bruce was the only one standing, and Dick suddenly couldn’t bring himself to look up from the carpet.
“Grayson.” Damian, surprisingly, was the first to speak. His voice was clipped and even, reminding Dick of Bruce during a debrief. “How is your injury?”
Dick figured he couldn’t get away with just a simple shrug this time, opting instead to raise his head just long enough to give a weak thumbs up and a smile that didn’t come close to reaching his eyes, judging by his family’s blank, disapproving stares.
“Christ, sit down,” Jason said, arms crossed over his chest. “You look like you’re about to fucking keel over.”
Dick did as he was told, feeling a bit like a man being led to the gallows, shoulders hunched as he waited for the inevitable. The wound in his side twinged when he lowered himself into the other couch across from his brothers, hands spasming as he pressed against the bandage under his shirt.
“Alfred patched him up,” Bruce said, and Dick dropped his head again. “He’ll be alright as long as he rests.”
“Good,” Tim said, and something in Dick’s heart twinged at his little brother at least acknowledging his existence. “Maybe being benched will knock some sense into him. What the fuck was that, Dick?”
Even if Dick could talk, it wasn’t like he’d have an answer to that question. He warily raised his eyes to his little brother, hair falling into his eyes, mouth kept shut.
“You took a bullet for me that I would have had time to handle if you had just tried to warn me! But- what? It’s some kind of power play? You don’t want to talk to me because you’re mad? What are you, fucking five?”
Dick saw Barbara shift, sharing an unreadable glance with Cass, her hands folded in her lap. “Tim-”
“No, I’m sick of this!” Tim snapped. Dick hadn’t heard him this upset since the Robin mantle had been officially handed over to Damian. “You told me I was crazy, Dick. You wouldn’t listen to me, you… I lost my dad. I lost my dad and then you took away the one thing I still had and then… and then I lost all of you too. And now… I’m allowed to be pissed. I needed time. You giving me the silent treatment isn’t fair.”
“Yeah, and I don’t know what the rest of us did to deserve it,” Jason piped up, glaring daggers across the living room. “But it’d be great if this pity party could stop. You’d think it’d be a wake up call when I’m the one telling you to suck it up and get along with everyone.”
“It is incredibly immature, Grayson,” Damian added. “Even for you.”
Dick didn’t know what to do, stuck staring straight ahead at nothing now, letting their words wash over him without a fight. He knew they were right, that they should be angry and disgusted, that he was being stupid and childish but he couldn’t help it. He wanted to sink into the floor. He wanted to disappear. He wanted to stop causing them so much pain.
He didn’t even try to say anything. He didn’t have any words left to fight to get out. There was nothing he could do to make this better.
Maybe they’d tell him to leave, that he was no longer welcome, on the team or in the family. Maybe this would finally be the end of Bruce’s rope. He’d lost all his chances. He wouldn’t be one of them anymore.
His eyes burned, chest heavy at the thought, but he forced himself to sit perfectly still, nails digging into his palm as he waited for more.
“Dick,” Bruce said, and it was nothing short of a miracle that Dick didn’t break down at just the sound of his own name said with so much disappointment. “We can work through this. We can fix this as a family. But I need to know what’s going on. If there’s more to this, you have to talk to us.”
Dick couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t breathe and he couldn’t talk, forced into silence, drowning under the weight of their stares, no escape in sight.
Bruce was in front of him now, towering over Dick and forcing the younger man to meet his gaze. Bruce was always so controlled, always careful with his emotions, but Dick had known him long enough to be able to tell when Batman was furious.
“This is ridiculous, Dick. You’re going to get someone hurt.”
There was a ringing in his ears, shrill and persistent, the words almost drowned out by his own panicked breathing.
“You need to talk to us.” Bruce snapped, venom cutting through the fog around Dick’s head. “This isn’t a game anymore, you need to tell us what’s going on so we can fix this! Dick, talk to me. Say something!”
“He can’t.”
Cass didn’t raise her voice, not even a little, but all heads swiveled to her at the two simple words. Bruce straightened and whirled around, shoulders still tense even with his back to Dick, his anger and tension left to seep into the rest of the room. “What?”
“He can’t talk, Bruce,” Cass said, suddenly soft. Softer than anything Dick deserved right now. “Look at him.”
All eyes were back on him, the weight of their stares heavier than before. Dick closed his eyes and dropped his head when Bruce turned back around, the silence of the living room deafening.
When he spoke again, the anger was already fading in favor of something softer. “Dick?”
Dick curled in on himself, shoulders hunched as he forced his hands to uncurl from trembling fists. He’d been backed into a corner, Cass picking him apart piece by piece in that uncanny way, zeroing in on exactly what he hadn’t wanted them to see.
He didn’t know if it would be better or worse now that they were going to know. He shouldn’t be reacting like this. He shouldn’t be so weak and needy when everything had been his fault to begin with.
But they were all watching him, waiting, and the least Dick could do was rip the band-aid off and get this over with. He’d made them deal with his shitshow long enough.
Dick raised a shaky hand off his lap, and signed the two words across his chest.
‘I’m sorry.’
He didn’t know what else to say. There wasn’t anything left to say. He didn’t deserve to voice anything but an apology, not after everything he’d put them through.
And now that he’d said it once, the words flowing off his hand, he couldn’t seem to stop.
‘I’m sorry,’ he signed again, hands shaking so bad it was a wonder he could manage it at all. He didn’t look at any of them, eyes still closed and his head bowed. ‘ I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.’
“Oh, Chum.” He could hear Bruce’s voice but it sounded far away, like it was coming through a tunnel. “God, I didn’t… Dick, it’s okay. It’s alright. Hey, look at me-”
Something touched his shoulder, a hand barely brushing his sleeve, and Dick jerked back fast enough to tug at his stitches, leaving him hissing in frantic pain as he pressed himself against the back of the couch.
“Dick,” Bruce said again, sounding just as frantic as Dick felt. “It’s okay. It’s okay.”
There wasn’t anything for him to hold onto anymore, all his fight to keep himself together in front of watchful eyes sapped away just like that. It didn’t matter anymore, anyway. It didn’t matter.
Dick curled forward, trembling hands weakly covering his face and tugging ruthlessly at his hair. He squeezed his eyes shut tighter, hot tears spilling over without his permission, and let out a choked, broken sob into the silent living room.
It was the first sound he’d made in weeks.
And just like with his flimsy sign language, now that he’d started he couldn’t seem to stop. He couldn’t breathe, every breath coming out a shuddering, weak cry of anguish, face burning hot, stinging and soaked with tears that refused to stop falling.
There was movement around him, voices he couldn’t even try to pick up on, and suddenly a hand settled on his knee, hesitant and gentle. He jumped again, but the hand only tightened its hold.
“Dick,” the voice said, but it wasn’t Bruce this time. “Breathe, honey. Just breathe for a minute, alright?”
Barbara was in front of him when he risked prying his eyes open. His vision was blurry, clouded by tears, but he could just make out her face, no trace of anger or annoyance, her tone soft and patient.
He’d missed her more than he’d realized. He’d missed being looked at with something other than anger or disappointment. He'd missed the feeling of knowing someone wasn't upset with him. He missed his family so much.
Dick didn’t deserve this. He didn’t deserve anyone’s kindness for one second. But he was reaching out before he could stop himself, tearing his hand from his hair and latching it around Barbara’s wrist as tight as he dared.
Something flickered in Oracle’s eyes behind her glasses, and she turned her head. “Get out.”
She wasn’t talking to him, he realized with a start, suddenly made painfully aware that it wasn’t just the two of them in the room.
“All of you,” Barbara snapped. Dick hadn’t heard her this angry since she’d shouted him out of the cave. “ Now.”
There was shuffling behind him, his siblings a blur of movement as they hurried towards the door under her orders, but out of the corner of his eye he saw Bruce stiffen, still frozen at the edge of the couch.
“Barbara-”
“Especially you.” The venom in her voice was enough to send Batman running, evident by the way Bruce didn’t even try to argue again. “Leave, Bruce. Just give us a minute. Please.”
Batman stepped back, turning on his heel and disappearing through the doorway without another word, leaving Dick and Barbara alone in the living room. Dick couldn’t bring himself to try to catch a glimpse of his father’s face.
“Hey Dickie,” Barbara said, any unwavering authority in her voice already long gone. “Can I touch you?”
Dick nodded so fast he nearly made himself dizzy, the living room nothing but a blur of noise and color. He didn’t want to be alone anymore. Please hold me, he wanted to scream, but he didn’t even have the fight left in him to try speaking anymore.
But he didn’t have to say anything. Barbara always seemed to know exactly what he needed, and suddenly she was pressed against his side with her arms wrapped around him, holding on tight like nothing else in the world mattered.
She didn’t ask any questions, didn’t push him to speak or explain himself, didn’t try to unravel what was wrong with him right now. Barbara just held him close and allowed Dick to finally let go and sob until there was nothing left.
Dick honestly wasn’t sure what happened in the moments that followed his breakdown, the world slipping away once the tears finally dried.
Barbara didn’t make him move from the couch, which he was grateful for more than he could have possibly expressed. His body wasn’t responding to his commands, drained and exhausted.
Besides, he’d spent too long avoiding the living room like the plague, terrified of being met with glares and cold dismissal. It was nice to be allowed back, to feel for a moment like he was part of the family again.
 “There you go,” Barbara was soothing, gently pushing his chest to lay him back on the couch, cradling the back of his head just long enough to slip a pillow underneath. There was more movement, shuffling somewhere beside him, and Dick’s breath caught when a blanket was carefully draped over his chest. “Just rest, honey. You’re okay now.”
Dick turned his head and blinked up at her, everything still slightly out of focus. The words still weren’t coming, no matter how much he wished they would, and Barbara only smiled sadly as she settled beside the couch and took his hand.
“I know, Dickie,” she said. “You’re okay. Have you… you’ve been nonverbal this whole time?”
All he could manage was a nod, shame pressing down on his chest as he lifted a shaky hand under the blanket to sign again, only for his wrists to be gently pushed back down.
“It’s okay. I know you’re going to try to apologize, and you don’t have to. You have nothing to apologize for, Dick. You haven’t done anything wrong.”
And that… that didn’t make any sense. It wasn’t true, not by a long shot, and he didn’t understand why Barbara was trying to make him feel better by lying to him.
He hadn’t done anything wrong? Dick couldn’t remember the last time he’d done anything right. Everyone was always so angry at him now, his siblings didn’t want to be in the same room as him, Bruce was disappointed and Tim wanted nothing to do with him.
He’d lost his family. He’d made mistake after mistake and it had cost him everything. He’d lost his little brother.
“You haven’t lost anyone,” Barbara said, and Dick startled when he realized he’d started signing again the second she’d pulled her hands away, the silent words surfacing without his permission, his shame laid out for her to see. “We’re right here, we’re not going anywhere. No one is. I’m… I’m so sorry nobody noticed, Dick. I’m sorry we’ve been so awful.”
Dick shook his head, not sure which part he was disagreeing with, blinking furiously when his eyes welled up with tears once again. He wasn’t going to make Barbara sit through this a second time.
“Hey, it’s going to be okay,” she soothed, a gentle hand carding through his hair. “We know now, we’re gonna help. I promise.”
Dick wanted to argue, wanted to insist that it was fine, that it was his fault, that it wasn’t something he wanted anyone to dwell on, not while they all had so much on their shoulders already.
But his limbs felt impossibly heavy, the pain from his wound steadily sapping him of what little energy he had left, eyes growing heavier the more Barbara talked, the hand in his hair slowly easing him into the first restful sleep he’d had in weeks.
-
“You can say no,” Barbara was saying, not seeming to catch the irony of her own words. “It’s alright if you’re not ready. Nobody’s angry.”
Which was a lie, plain as day, judging by the cold glares being sent Bruce’s way that she wasn’t even trying to hide. But no one was glaring at Dick, no one was yelling at him this time, and he just wanted to get this over with.
‘ He can come in,’ Dick signed, unable to make eye contact with anyone. It was almost freeing, being able to finally use sign language like this, like he could finally communicate again without having to hide. It didn’t mean he didn’t still feel pathetic, reduced to silence like this over nothing.
“Alright,” Barabra said, hesitant. Dick couldn’t bring himself to look up to see Bruce’s face, but he doubted there was anything welcome there. “If you need me just…” she paused, and if Dick had the energy he might have smiled. “I’ll be back to check on you in a few minutes.”
And with that she was gone, the door shutting behind her a moment later, leaving the living room in heavy silence, Dick left curled up on the end of the couch he’d woken up on moments ago, Bruce hovering a few paces away.
I’m sorry, Dick wanted so badly to say, but his voice stayed stubbornly locked away, and his trembling hands stayed frozen in his lap. I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I-
“I’m sorry.”
Dick snapped his head up, risking a glance at the man across the room, clutching at the blanket still pooled in his lap. Bruce took a moment to meet his eyes, his gaze firmly trained on the floor, but when he did Dick let go of the blanket to shakily sign again. ‘ What?’
“I’m sorry,” Bruce said again, like it wasn’t unheard of. Like it hadn’t been one of the hardest things for him to say since Dick had met him. “God, I’m… Dick, why didn’t you tell anyone you were nonverbal?”
Dick just blinked, and Bruce’s shoulders sagged at his blank stare. “I know, I’m… Dick, everyone in this house speaks sign language, and over half of them have gone mute before. Myself included, you know that. It’s never been an issue.”
Dick just shrugged, hands going from clutching the blanket, to his shirt, to wrapping around his middle, like he could try to hold himself together.
“Dick,” Bruce tried again, crossing the room in careful, calculated strides. “Why didn’t you ask for help?”
Dick swallowed, refusing to lift his gaze from his lap even as Bruce kneeled beside the couch, slowly raising his hands just a fraction to sign, ‘ I didn’t want to make you more angry.’
“Angry?” Bruce echoed out loud. “Why would anyone be angry at you?”
Dick wanted to scoff. He wanted to pull away and close his eyes, curl up and go back to sleep, sob his eyes out until this all went away. He wanted to be angry. He wanted to mourn and beg.
Instead, the words came spilling out of unsteady hands, mouth staying firmly shut. ‘ Everyone’s so mad at me. Everyone’s mad and it's all my fault. I shouldn’t be like this when it was my fault, I can’t ask for help, you’ll all just think I want attention but I don’t, I promise I’m trying but-’
“Hey, hey.” Bruce’s hands were suddenly over his own, not enough to restrict his movements, but the warm touch enough to yank Dick back to reality. He gasped, ragged and shallow, when he realized he’d stopped breathing. “Hey, nobody’s mad at you. Nobody’s… we just thought…”
Dick pulled his hands away. ‘ You yelled at me.’
“I did,” Bruce relented, hands hovering uselessly over the couch. “You scared me, I thought-”
‘ Tim hates me, Dick signed, barreling over whatever Bruce had been about to say. At least this way, talking with his hands, he couldn’t be spoken over, and Bruce had the decency to fall silent. He hates me and everyone else is mad and I don’t… know what I did but I can’t fix it. Everyone’s so mad and they hate me and I can’t fix it.’
“Tim doesn’t hate you,” Bruce said, the moment Dick paused. “Nobody hates you.”
‘ They do!’ Dick couldn’t scream himself hoarse the way he so desperately wanted to, but he was sure his desperation came across in his movements by the way Bruce snapped his mouth shut and leaned back. ‘ I’ve been trying so hard. I’ve been trying so hard, B. Ever since you came back I’ve just been trying to do better. I keep trying to talk to them, I keep trying to say sorry, but they won’t… they don’t want to listen to me. They’re mad and I don’t know how to do this anymore.’
“Dick… honey-”
‘ Alfred said I wasn’t trying,’ Dick pushed on, his hands shaking even worse now. ‘ He said I wasn’t putting in the effort. Jason thinks I’m just trying to make you all feel bad, Barbara didn’t want anything to do with me, Damian and Tim don’t want me here, and all I did was disappoint you.’
“Chum, take a breath.”
‘ All I did was disappoint you.’ He couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t catch his breath. ‘ I just wanted to do good. I just wanted to be better and all I did was make everyone angry.’
“It’s okay,” Bruce tried, clearly at a loss, eyes wide and frantic as he watched Dick move. He moved to take Dick’s wrists, to get him to slow down, quickly dropping his hands back to his thighs when Dick yanked them away, panicked and cornered, desperate to cling onto the only communication he’d had in weeks. “We’re going to fix this, Dick. I promise you.”
‘ He told me I was worse than Jack,’ Dick signed, ignoring the empty promise, ignoring the way Bruce went still. ‘ When I took Robin away. He told me I was worse than Jack. I was… I was just trying to keep him safe. I just wanted to protect him and I lost him. I lost my baby brother, I… I can’t fix this. I can’t fix it.’
“You are nothing like Jack,” Bruce said, eyes softening when Dick’s breath hitched on a broken sob. “That’s… I didn’t know he said that to you.”
‘ You didn’t ask,’ Dick signed before he could stop himself. ‘ You didn’t even ask me if I was okay.’
It was unfair, Dick knew it was. Bruce had checked in on all his kids in his own way, silent and unseen, the method he found most comfortable. He’d had the weight of the world on his shoulders since he’d returned, a life to rebuild, a city to retake control over.
But he’d shifted that weight to Dick’s shoulders without so much as a warning when he’d died, and nobody had bothered to ease the ache it left.
It was a miracle he’d only lost his voice.
“I know,” Bruce said, resigned instead of angry, soft instead of defensive. “I should have. I’ve been worried about you- all of you, I just…”
He trailed off and Dick watched him carefully, cheeks stinging with fresh tears. ‘ I’m not mad at you.’
“You should be,” Bruce said. “Nobody would blame you for being furious with all of us.”
‘ I’m not.’ He wasn’t. He didn’t have the energy to be angry. ‘ I just miss everyone. I just want everything to go back to normal.’
“It will. Everyone just needs time.”
‘ Nobody wants me here,’ he signed. ‘ Nobody wants anything to do with me anymore. They hate me, they wish I would just-’
“Everyone is worried sick about you,” Bruce cut in, gently resting his hands over Dick’s and effectively shutting down that particular train of thought. “You’re their brother and they… everyone feels awful, Chum. We really do.”
Dick hesitated, slowly pulling his hands out of Bruce’s grasp. ‘ Okay.’
Bruce’s face fell, but he was suddenly moving slowly, easing his way onto the edge of the couch, watching Dick like his son was a spooked wild animal, seconds from bolting.
“Can I touch you?” he asked, and Dick nodded faster than he’d planned. But it didn’t matter- it didn’t matter how needy or desperate or pathetic everyone must think he was, rendered to something so helpless over so little- not when Bruce’s hands were suddenly framing his face, warm and steady, the same way they had so many times when Dick had been younger.
“You are not a disappointment,” Bruce said, so sharp and sudden it made Dick’s tears stop all at once, breaths still coming in nothing more than hiccuping gasps. “I left you with an impossible task, Dick. I didn’t… I never wanted anyone to take on the Batman mantle. All of this, everything I’ve done, has been so no one else would have to carry that burden. It was never meant to be passed to you. Any of you. But you did, and you did good. You did good, Dick. No matter what decisions you made or didn’t make, no matter what mistakes or mishaps happened, you did good. And I’m proud of you. You will never lose this family, and I’ll never stop being proud to call you my son. So get that idea out of your head right this minute, do you understand?”
Dick had started crying again somewhere along to way, latching onto Bruce’s words as desperately as he could when his own sobs were threatening to drown everything out.
But he found himself nodding to his father’s command, leaning into his touch, wanting nothing more than to believe him without question, to trust Batman as blindly as he had when he’d been his Robin.
“It’s going to be alright,” Bruce said, and despite everything, every instinct telling him not to, Dick allowed himself to trust that he was right. Just for the moment. “It’ll get better. We’ll fix this together, Dick. We’ll fix this.”
Dick nodded again, unable to do anything but let Bruce pull him into his arms like he was a little boy again and weep into his father’s chest.
-
Dick honestly hadn’t expected anything to change. Everyone would still be angry- even more angry now that he’d caused a scene just because he’d been too weak to handle a little pressure- and he’d just have to keep riding out the nonverbal episode on his own until things slowly went back to a tense, reluctant normal.
He didn’t expect the rest of the family to start trickling in after Barbara and Bruce had stepped out, one by one like they were taking turns, waiting to talk to him.
Damian was first, practically kicking Bruce out with a determined glare, a plate of food in his hands, planting himself on the other end of the couch, legs crossed.
“Talking is stupid,” he declared, the closest he’d come to telling Dick it was okay, and thrust the plate into his older brother’s hands. “But you need to eat. Pennyworth made you your favorite. You missed dinner because you were shot.”
Dick winced, not particularly thrilled about the idea of being lectured for his injury again, but Damian just watched intently as Dick picked at his food, brow furrowed.
“I am happy to eliminate Drake for you,” he said, and Dick nearly dropped his fork. “He seems to be the main cause of your distress.”
Dick shook his head, forcing himself to take a bite of food despite the way it made his stomach churn. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d eaten, skipping family dinner as much as he possibly could.
‘ No thank you,’ he signed, hands moving slower, sign language newer to Damian than to Bruce and Babs. ‘ It’s not Tim’s fault. He has the right to be angry with me.’
Damian crossed his arms, his gaze locked firmly on the floor. “Everyone is acting incredibly immature. It was… irresponsible of them not to notice your distress. And a failure on my part.”
‘ It’s not your fault, Damian,’ Dick said, but Damian didn’t raise his head to see the words. ‘ It’s okay.’
Dick could practically see the gears turning in the youngest Wayne’s head, biting his lip as he considered his words carefully, hesitating a moment too long before speaking again. “I enjoyed being your Robin, Grayson. You did good work. It would not… be ideal, if you weren’t with us anymore.”
There was no way Dick was going to let himself break down again, especially not in front of his youngest brother, but he found himself having to blink away tears, reaching forward to squeeze Damian’s hand.
‘ Thank you.’
Damian opted to stay right where he was even in the silence that followed, watching with a scrutinizing frown as Dick ate, refusing to let up until half the plate was cleared and his older brother set it aside on the coffee table with an apologetic smile.
Cass came next, Damian excusing himself with a huff as he gathered up the remains of Dick’s dinner and disappeared through the doorway with one last wide eyed glance at his big brother, doing an uncharacteristically poor job of concealing his worry.
His sister didn’t seem to have anything to say, signing a small greeting before settling down on the chair beside the couch, gaze soft when she glanced at him, all the words neither of them had expressed in just a quiet, gentle look.
They didn’t speak, the two of them sitting in the comfortable silence of the living room, and Dick finally started to feel some of the tension from his shoulders come undone, the sickening tightness of his chest unraveling just a little.
Dick was almost certain he was imagining it when Jason showed up in the doorway after Cass had wandered off, hesitating in the threshold, hand stuffed deep in his pockets and a scowl etched onto his face. Dick’s stomach dropped as he sat up, waiting.
“Hey,” Jason grunted, and Dick held up a nervous hand. “You uh… did you eat? There’s leftovers in the fridge.”
‘ Damian brought me a plate.’
“Right,” Jason said, moving to cross his arms as he shuffled forward. “Alfred’s worried sick, you know. He’s deep cleaning the house.”
‘ Oh.’ Dick hesitated, scrambling to figure out if Jason was here to yell at him or not. ‘ I’m sorry.’
“Christ, don’t do that,” Jason snapped, and Dick dropped his hands. “It’s hard enough for me to apologize without you doing it first.”
Dick blinked, glancing at the door to make sure Barbara wasn’t holding his brother at gunpoint. There was no point in trying to sign any questions, not when Jason’s gaze was locked firmly on the wall across from him.
“Don’t look so surprised,” Jason said, only taking a second to glance in Dick’s direction. “Look, I was an ass. I’m… sorry for shoving you. And yelling. I should have realized you weren’t okay, and I didn’t. I’m sorry.”
It was the most concrete apology he’d gotten from Jason since he’d been a kid, always smiling, always too good for a world like this. He waited until Jason looked back at him, shoulders tense like he was bracing to be brushed off, before carefully signing a response.
‘ Don’t be sorry. It’s not your job to pick up on when I’m feeling down.’
“You would have been the first to notice if it was any of us,” Jason shot back, and Dick didn’t have an argument for that. “A lot of shit’s been going on and we’ve all fucked up a little, you included. That’s not an excuse to throw you under the bus. You’re still our brother.”
Dick fiddled with the blanket, wishing his voice would come back if only for a second, desperate to tell Jason just how much it meant to hear him say those words. Eventually, he settled on sending a silent, ‘ Thank you.’
“Yeah whatever,” Jason muttered, but Dick could see some of the tension easing from his shoulders. “Glad you’re like… not dead, by the way. I’ll buy you ice cream or something when you’re feeling better. Can’t be mad at me after that.”
Dick rolled his eyes, a smile tugging at his lips despite everything. ‘ I’m not mad at you.’
“Of course you aren’t,” Jason scoffed, smirking over his shoulder as he started back towards the doorway. “Get some sleep, Goldie. You look like shit.”
A moment later Dick was alone again, but the silence didn’t feel nearly as suffocating this time, the air noticeably lighter as he leaned back against the pillows and let his eyes slip shut.
Maybe this wasn’t as irreparable as he’d thought. Maybe… maybe things would start to get better, slowly but surely. They weren’t angry with him anymore- most of them weren’t, anyway- and the pain in his chest that had lingered since the Robin mantle had been passed down was finally allowing him some relief.
Maybe his voice would come back to him with time, if he was a little patient with himself. Maybe-
“Dick?”
Dick’s eyes flew open, breath catching in his throat when he saw the figure in the doorway, hunched over himself in a hoodie Dick belatedly recognized as one of his own. It had been missing for weeks.
Tim didn’t say anything for a moment, the two of them caught in the living room’s silence. Dick watched as his little brother’s eyes darted to his face, only to quickly move back down to his stomach where the fresh bandages were poking out from beneath his shirt, like he needed to reassure himself Dick wasn’t in danger of bleeding out again.
“I’m glad you’re okay,” Tim said, so quiet Dick nearly missed it. It was almost surreal, hearing Tim address him like he cared again. “And I shouldn’t have yelled at you. You saved my life. So… thank you. And I’m sorry.”
Dick didn’t know what he was supposed to do, frozen, like one wrong move would shatter the illusion, like Tim would go right back to angry if he so much as moved the wrong way.
Tim didn’t seem to mind the lack of response, nodding to himself like he’d been expecting it.
“I think we should talk,” Tim said. “When you can, I mean. Take your time, just… I’m tired of being mad at you, Dick. I miss you. You’re… even after all this, you’re still my brother. I didn’t… I didn’t want this.”
Dick hesitated, running the words through his head in a frantic loop before carefully signing a response. ‘I didn’t mean to hurt you.’
“You never do,” Tim muttered, but he sounded resigned more than angry. “I don’t- I don’t understand. I don’t understand why you did it but… but I’d like to. Whenever you can, I think it would be good to talk.”
Dick didn’t know what to do but nod wordlessly, quickly blinking away the heat gathering behind his eyes again. Tim just smiled, the gesture small and tired, and turned back towards the hallway.
“Get some rest. Alfie and Bruce are fighting over who gets to bring you tea.” He paused, a hand resting on the doorframe. “I love you, you know. I don’t want you to think I don’t. We’ll talk in a few days.”
Dick leaned back against the couch cushions, breathing slowly as he listened to his little brother’s footsteps fade, the familiar, comfortable commotion from the kitchen filtering in through the open door.
Maybe everything would be alright, after all.

"You take the Batman case" (DCeased story line)
WOOOO reader! This is the last choice and the 3/3 ending. Wait... you're caught up in the choose your story right? I encourage you to go back just in case ya know. XD idk how this is going to show up so if there are any errors plz lmk! (Scene 1)
You close your eyes as the shot rang through the cave. Then the thump following suit.
“I’m sorry lady Y/n.”
You turn around to face Alfred. You noticed a tear trickle down, then two but his posture. His stance. He was being your rock. You walk Bruce’s body. “Goodbye my love.” You go to the computer and type in a message . “Attention family. Batman, Nightwing, and Red Robin are gone… I, Y/n have my talkie for contact. As of today, the Batcave is decommissioned.”
Without a second to waist you shut off the cave. Both you and Alfred head into the batwing and leave.
You look down into the under rotten city. “This is too much Alfred. I just… I”. With the adrenaline gone you finally broke down. Your throat hurt as the whaling intensified. Alfred pressed a couple of buttons, bombing the city below. You felt your body weaken “Alfred, do you think I lost Jason again? Or Cassandra. Are Barbra and James ok?”
“All we can do now is hope lady Y/n”
~~~~~~
You didn’t think your day couldn’t get any worse. Giganta rushed towards the daily planet. You felt yourself go lightheaded, you can’t bare to loose another child. Not when you’re so close. “Worry not y/n” Alfred expertly flew towards her firing missiles at her head. The giant roared then swung her arms towards the jet hitting it dead on. Alfred lost control, you held on for dear life as the blaring alarms sounded off.
Then the spiraling stopped. You looked outside to see Diana as a green lantern catch you and Alfred. The plan was carefully placed on the rooftop of the daily planet.
The doors opened and Alfred stepped out. Damian held his breath in the hopes his parents were to show up as well. Alfred reached his hand into the jet to pull you out. There he was, Damian dressed as Robin staring right back at you. “My baby. Oh my Damian.”
You ran to him, enveloping him into the tightest hug you can think of. He hugged you right back just as tightly, you felt a wet warmth on your shoulder. Alfred too joined in on the hug. // Reunited with Robin // Ending 3/3
Jason’s life would be so much easier if Damian wasn’t so damn pretty.
Every so often, Bruce is expected to host some of his peers for dinner and drinks—some long-standing tradition that Bruce can get away with skipping out on sometimes, but too much, and people will start to talk. It's stupid, but part of the cover.
If you ask Jason, they're worse than galas. He misses the days he could duck out after dinner. He guesses he still could, but— Now that he's older, it's a little more expected for him to actually participate.
Jason would rather not. He knows plenty of Gotham’s upper crust would rather he didn’t, too, no matter how well Jason has managed to assimilate. But… he has plans, and unfortunately, he can acknowledge that they’ll be raised if he’s in somewhat good standing among the folks with the money.
Doesn’t make attending any easier.
At least he only has to worry about attending the ones Bruce hosts. Eventually his peers will start inviting him to theirs, but for now, he’s still being very quietly snubbed. Which—for the moment at least—suits him just fine, plans or no.
Damian showed up this time, an hour before dinner started; wrapped in green and gold and looking like he just stepped off of a magazine cover. Jason barely paid attention at dinner tonight—too busy trying not to blush anytime Damian sent him a sly smile, or covertly rolled his eyes, or signed something discreetly across the table. He knew it was hardly private—Bruce had been there, he’d surely caught every one—but. The attention—
It made him feel… special.
Stupid, of course. Damian hardly sees him that way. He’s… To Damian, he’s family, and that’s all he’ll ever be.
But it’s kind of nice to pretend, when he gets the chance.
Bruce’s final guests are finally on their way out the door. Jason sits, chin in hand, at the top of the stairs, watching as Damian and Alfred see them out. He thinks the whole house breathes a sigh of relief when they finally leave. Alfred excuses himself to the kitchen, likely to oversee the temporary staff Bruce hires for these things. He’ll have them out the door as soon as possible, too, and then Jason will finally be able to sleep.
Damian lingers by the door for a moment. Then, finally, he begins to ascend the stairs. "Jason," he says. It’s a greeting and a question all in one.
Jason stands, smoothing the wrinkles from his slacks. “Can’t sleep until I know everyone’s gone,” he says. He knows they’d never be able to get into the family wing, not with Bruce’s security, but—
Old fears are hard to shake. Jason never sleeps well when there are strangers around, no matter how many locks Bruce gives him for his door.
Damian nods, like this is perfectly reasonable, and not a weird hang-up of Jason’s. ‘Course, considering... Damian probably feels the same way. That— It’s not comforting, ‘cause Jason hates to think of why he might, but… At the same time... it's reassuring to know he’s not alone.
Damian stops a few steps down from him. Like this, they’re almost at eye level; Damian’s eyes just past Jason’s nose.
“Thanks for coming tonight,” Jason says. Mostly just to say something. Keep the conversation going, even if just for a little while. It’s not often anymore that it’s just the two of them. He can’t begrudge Dickie the comfort of Damian’s presence, nor would he ever want to lose his time with Tim, but—
He does miss, sometimes, when it was just Damian and Jason—and sometimes Steph or Cass.
Damian hums. “Father is not as unbearable at these as he is at other functions, but. I’d still be remiss in my obligations if I left you to deal with him alone for too long.”
Jason knows his ‘obligations’ are purely platonic. He knows. His heart flutters, though; the traitorous bastard putting a more romantic lilt on the word. “Well. I appreciate it,” he says, softly. He bites his lip. “I… It’s nice. Having you around.”
Damian smiles. It’s small; mostly in his eyes, the way they upturn at the corners. “It is nice to, ah, ‘be around’,” he says. He reaches up to smooth down the lapel of Jason's blazer. Even through the layers, his touch burns like a brand. “You’ve grown up well, habibi.” His mouth curls up, just a little bit more.
The compliment is unexpected. The smile even more. And the touch—
Jason flushes scarlet. Every blush he’d fought back at dinner hits him now, and he feels a little lightheaded with it.
That, he decides, is the reason he leans down, foolishly, and presses a kiss right against one of those upturned corners. “Thanks,” he breathes—and then, heart threatening to beat right out of his chest, he flees to the safety of his bedroom, leaving Damian alone in the stairwell.
The World We Knew
Summary: You go over the downfall of your marriage with Bruce.
There was no greater pain than watching your son and husband fight, to see the once loving relationship they had disappear over a few misspoken words and years of quiet loathing finally being released. The night Dick stormed out of the house, leaving his Robin suit on the floor of the cave he stopped to give you a kiss on your cheek. A habit you were so glad he never broke. Dick said that he loved you, but he wouldn’t be around for a while—Not when that man had taken something from him that he had made. Robin was his and was something no one could ever take away from him. Still, a frightened father had done just that.
You couldn’t agree less, but, for your own selfishness, decided not to say anything. Bruce had expected you to be on his side, and partially you were. But, the sight of your son vowing never to return home did something that sparked a little resentment toward your husband.
The few months after Dick had left, Bruce had tried to reconcile with him but his own stubbornness got in the way when his son showed any sort of pushback. Fortunately, Dick had made it a point to talk to you nearly every week just so he could tell you he loved you and express how he was sorry for all that had happened. He loved Bruce but the anger in his heart refused to let go.
Bruce continued to say he would try his best with Dick but was confused about where to start, usually avoiding the situation as a whole. In turn, it had taken a strain on your relationship with him. You had pushed him to try harder, saying that Dick needed a father but Bruce was insistent that your son didn’t want to reconcile. Eventually, you left the topic alone in hopes of fixing what the two of you had or eventually reaching a compromise when things were healed further.
And, for a time, they had. Dick had come back when Jason entered the picture. At first, he was angry at you and Bruce for replacing him, in near tears that he wasn’t good enough for the two of you. You cried when he finally let those fear out into the open, taking him into your embrace.
 “Never, my baby. No one could ever replace you.” You encouraged Dick to give this new family a chance, to start afresh and he agreed as long Bruce wouldn’t push him. And, fortunately, Bruce was more than happy to have him back. For a while again, things were happy.
Jason, like Dick, had become such a joy to have around. The boy was sweet and took to you more than your other son, as he wasn’t as interested in being Robin as Dick was. Not that he didn’t love or look forward to kicking criminal ass every night, but there was a life of his outside of it. Jason didn’t dream of being Robin, he wanted to do things beyond it. He loved theatre, books, and literature—He often talked about writing his own poetry or performing in a play at school. You reveled in his dreams as a newfound hope that there was something beyond this family than the cave or mask blossomed.
Dick had even taken an interest in carving out a career of his own, looking at opportunities in Bludhaven along with progressing in his work with the Teen Titans. Something you were extremely happy and proud of seeing. While his relationship with Jason was awkward, there were moments when you could see Dick enjoy being an older brother. Often, when he was home, Jason and he would have fun poking at all the buttons Bruce had.
Bruce even seemed happier, taking more time out of being a bat to spend with you or the boys. Numerous times did Alfred catch the two of you in a playful scuffle or the whole family in one. His touches seemed softer and more open. For a while you had wondered what had caused this change, was it you or the boys? Whatever it was, you were glad it happened.
As you knew all too well, though, all good things must come to an end. The friction between Dick and Bruce was now reflected in his relationship with Jason. They fought most of the time now, Bruce being too strict with his youngest son and Jason wanting to be free from the constraints. You knew you shouldn’t have blamed Bruce again, but the resentment that you had pushed down was now returning. The thought of Jason leaving churned your stomach so you put your foot down with your husband to fix the situation before it got too out of hand.
Yet, despite Bruce’s best efforts, Jason had already determined to leave the issues he was facing behind. One night, after finding out that he had a real mother out there, he decided it was time to leave. Both you and Bruce were struck by grief and tried to bring him home. It would be too late as you would come to find when Bruce brought home the bruised body of your son.
The pain of losing a child was unbearable. You couldn’t help but feel it was your fault, the anger at yourself boiling to the point where it lashed out at Bruce. Who, you knew, was still fallen in his own woes just as much as you were.
Dick, who had found out all too late, refused to speak to either of you for some time as he insisted that both of you were to blame. Because what happy son would just run off to be with a mother they never knew? Least of all one who was a criminal involved with the Joker.
For some time Alfred had attempted to hold things together, and, at moments, it would work. Still, threads couldn’t hold the weight of a grieving family. It would eventually come crashing down worse than before, with arguments getting louder and the silence longer.
You wondered for a while if Bruce had started to see the breakdown of your marriage as you had. It was slow in its unwinding before completely falling apart. The nights where he would take time out of being a hero to spend with you weren’t filled with sex or fun coupley things like they used to be, but now arguments. The two of you couldn’t stand the sight of the other for a long time, and eventually, divorce was brought up one night over a stiff dinner. It was you who had brought it up and the mere mention of it had sent Bruce into a hard silence. He didn’t even entertain the thought before getting up to storm off to the cave. Yet, when you threw your glass across the room at him in pure rage and frustration he didn’t turn back.
Defeated, you sunk back down into your seat, closing your eyes to remember the time before the grief. There was so much love and hope that you wondered why it all went wrong. Was it the folly of two young boys, or could the two of you be better parents? You wanted to say it was the curse of the masks they all wore because it seemed to suck the joy out of the happy life you wished for. Or, maybe it was just your own bad luck.
It didn’t matter, you’d sit there replaying the world where all of you were happy over and over until you could fool yourself that it could be that way again.
Brotherly love
A/N: Hi @13phantom13angel13, I am your squealing santa this year! As an avid batboys fan, I really hope you enjoy what I wrote and that I did them justice. Happy December!
Summary: After a mission doesn't fit up to Red Robin's standards, it's up to Jason to step up to his big brother role.
Word count: 549
___________________________________________
“I hate to be that guy, but I’m the angsty one here. So I’m gonna need you to stop'' Jason spoke, leaning against Tim’s door frame. The latter sulked in bed after his latest mission. In a house full of egocentric detectives, any small mistake seemed like the end of the world.
In true Drake fashion, he didn’t bother communicating, simply huffed and crossed his arms. Laying on his side, facing away from his older brother. If facial expressions made noise, the whole mansion would’ve heard Jason’s aggressive eye roll.
This was definitely the moment where he’d walk away, but for some reason, his legs stayed cemented in place. As much as he hated being the ‘caring’ older brother, he can’t just let poor Tim sulk, right? So with a groan, Jason made his way in, sitting at the foot of the bed.
“C’mon, I’m sure it wasn’t that bad”.
“Easy for you to say, you weren’t there!” The younger’s voice grew in intensity before falling flat once more. “Just leave me alone…”.
Well, talking it out sure didn’t work, time for plan B: do things the Jason way. All that time learning to torment his brothers wasn’t left in vain, as it came handy whenever one of them fell a bit too stubborn.
So with a sigh, Jason casually got up, making Tim believe he was finally leaving, only to suddenly be pinned on his own bed. Back pressed against the mattress and hands held firmly above his head.
“You seriously think I’m gonna let you sulk all by yourself? You’re even dumber than I thought”
“I’m not dumb— W-wahait! Not thahahat!” whatever anger Tim felt was quickly dissolved into light titters, as strong fingers started to drag up and down his side.
“See? Much better. A smile suits you more” Jason couldn’t help form a grin of his own, watching the younger robin slowly losing his composure. Trying to endure and act tough, only to fall back and give in to the laughter.
“Stohop it! I’m seherious- Gyah!! Pfft! Ahahahaha! Jahahason!” Red Robin let out a flustered whine, trying to shield his ever-growing red face behind his bound arm. His body desperately trying to wiggle away as Red Hood’s tickly fingers danced all over his abdomen.
“Not a chance! When’s the last time you let loose and had a good laugh? Either way, I’m changing that now~”
An ear-shattering squeal erupted from the younger brother when Jason started scratching at the soft spot below his navel.
“EEEEK! PFFT! NAHAHAHA! OKAY! OKAHAHAY! I CAHAHAN’T!” poor Tim gasped and wheezed in uncontrollable laughter. Words falling deaf as he desperately tried telling Jason to stop.
After a few more squeals and cries of ticklish agony did Jason finally let up. Allowing Tim to take in a well-deserved breath.
Once the happy rush passed, an awkward silence fell upon the boys. Jason cleared his throat, about to head out, before being stopped by a small ‘wait’ from Tim.
“I- uhh… just wanted to say, thanks for that…” the young robin didn’t bother meeting the older one’s gaze. It wasn’t everyday they had such a pure, brotherly moment.
“No problem, Timmers” Jason shot back with a soft smile before walking out. Maybe acting like an older brother wasn’t so bad after all.
Okay so maybe trying on your boyfriend's old vigilante costume wasn’t that great of an idea when you had No idea how to actually put the thing on properly and it was meant for a teenager to wear, but if there was one thing Y/N wasn’t it was a quitter.
Y/N froze as the door began to open, he frantically looked around for a place to hide or for some sort of solution to his problem but found none. He watched as his boyfriend finally entered and froze. Jason stared for what felt like forever before his lip twitched.
“Don’t even Todd” Y/N grumbled through gritted teeth as he attempted to remove his arm from the sleeve again, He glared at his boyfriend through the bedroom mirror as he failed to get it free.
Jason held up his hand in surrender not bothering to hide the grin beginning to form, he moved to lean against the door frame "I didn’t even say anything”
“You were thinking it”
Jason watched his boyfriend struggle for a couple seconds before taking pity on him and begins to walk over to help him.  “What were you even trying to do”
Y/N followed Jason's instructions and let him maneuver him into the suit “I Have no idea, I saw it and was like What the hell, you know”. Jason shook his head in amusement as he stepped away to smooth down the costume.
“So, what do you think?”
Y/N looked at himself in the mirror taking in the suit and all its glory before finally speaking “Jay, I love you, but if I had met you when you were wearing this I would of 100% made fun of you for it”
“Hey!”
“I’m just saying it’s a bold choice”
Jason came closer and wrapped his arms around Y/N’s waist and rested his chin on the top of his boyfriend's head "Well, I think you look great”
Y/N lip twitched “I look good in everything babe”. Jason hums before pressing a kiss to the crown of his boyfriend's head.
Jason loosens his arms as Y/N begins to turn around to face him, he smiles as Y/N wraps his arms around his neck to bring his closer, Y/N leans forward and closes the gap between them and captures Jason's lips into a playful kiss. Jason moves his hand to grip Y/N’s hips to bring them as close as possible causing Y/N to laugh into the kiss. Jason pulls back slowly and rests their foreheads together both grinning  “wanna try on my hood suit”
“.... Yes”
AHHHHHH OH THATS SO GOOD Jason deserves to be pampered and dressed up in lingerie and if no one else got him, he got himself
first ask here Luckily Tim got him too ;) once he sees Jay
Jason has finally worked himself up to buying a dress when it happens. Of course it happens only after he put on the dress; and learned that maybe he should have not just grabbed the first one that looked to be in his size and hightailed it out of the store, because he had been struggling to put it on. A reminder for the next time. And just as he was about to finally celebrate the fact that he had gotten it to fit, and was somewhere vaguely in the back of his mind dreading taking it off so he could return it, he heard a crash just as he was admiring himself in the mirror. A crash in his life could only mean two things, someone had come to kill him, or someone had come to kill him, but with worry and annoyance this time. Creeping into his living room and palming his gun on the way, he cursed out whatever gods had [] this ill-fated timing. He hoped it was someone he could shoot, just so the memory of him in a dress would be gone. (Oh he was aware that Oracle probably knew, as she was as much of a stalker as the big Bat, or more, but at least she knew how to keep her mouth shut, and hopefully she’d just assume that Jason was gathering these things for a case, and not his new hobby.) His hopes were dashed when he finally made it to his living room and he was greeted with Red, Red from Red Robins suit, Red being the vigilante himself, and oh of course red being the growing puddle as said vigilante was bleeding out on his living room floor. At least he had decided to crash in the already existing stain of blood, and not create a new one that Jason would have to clean as well before he moved houses.
after this how can he do anything else but buy him more stuff
Clothes that fit and accent his waist and tits and-
The Alter
Tumblr media
Pairing: Jason Todd x reader
Warnings: Pet name Baby, Really short oneshot
Summary: On the day of your wedding, Jason chooses Robin over you.
*Not Proof Read*
*****
" Five minutes! " The wedding coordinator shouts from down the hallway. I nervously chew on my lip.
Where is he?
" Don't do that, you'll mess up your lipstick. " Raven gently pushes my hand away. " He'll be here. He...probably forgot his tux or something. You know how he is. " She rolls her eyes.
I let out a nervous chuckle and sit back against one of the chairs. " You're right. He can be so forgetful. "
I hope he just forgot.
The minutes seem to pass by quickly. Raven's eyebrows twitch as her eyes look past my body.
" Y/N..." Gar's voice rings out nervously.
My eyes shoot towards the green haired boy, worried something might have happened to Jason. " Did something happen to Jason? " I ask, getting out of my chair. " Is he alright? What hospital? "
Gar shakes his head. " No, he's not hurt. At least I don't think he is...He's 2 hours away at a bank robbery. Bruce tracked him down when he wasn't answering his phone. "
My heart sinks.
How could he?
He promised today would be our day. Only our day.
I clench my jaw. " You're lying. He's coming. He has to come! He-he fucking promised me, Gar. He promised. "
This has to be some stupid joke. A really unfunny stupid joke.
" Y/N..." Raven places her hand gently on my shoulder.
I brush it off, trying to regain my composure. " He's coming. We're waiting until he gets here. "
I don't have to look up to see the looks of pity. The feeling of their eyes on my body is enough to cause my stomach to twist.
We're going to be here a while.
______
The guests left.
One by one they slowly trickled out of the double doored chapel. I didn't miss the looks of pity and whispers of what might of happened as they walked past.
I still waited.
He'd show up sooner or later. He has to. He promised.
Eventually most of the team left as well with promises to check in on me. They had lives to get back to. People to go see.
Finally the doors open.
He's here.
Heavy footsteps run through the hallway, echoing off the tall walls. " Y/N...."
I don't respond.
His breath is shallow, like he's been running for a while. " Shit, I'm so sorry, baby. "
Of course he is.
" I-I didn't think the job'd last that long-"
" You promised. " I spit, finally looking up at the man. His hair is slick with sweat. He's still in his suit, blood splattered in numerous spots. " You fucking promised me Jason. "
" I know but- "
I don't let him finish. " No. You're always doing this. You're always putting me second. Do you know how humiliating it was to sit here and wait for you? You left me at the alter. " I stand up, anger seeping through my pores. " You never think about me. You're-you're addicted to the praise. You live for high of danger. What about me? I asked for one day. One fucking day! And that was too much for you! "
Guilt floods Jason's features. He swallows harshly.
" I've stood by you through everything. You've missed my birthday, our anniversary, my fucking graduation and now you've missed our wedding. You will never put me first. " I take a deep breath. Tears sting that back of my eyes. " So I need to put me first. I'm done, Jason. I can't do this with you anymore. I need someone who gives a fuck about me. "
Jason's eyes widen in realization. Panic floods his face. " What? Y/N-Baby please! We can-I can fix this. I swear to god I'll fix this. "
I shake my head. " No. We're done Jason. " I harshly brush some tears from my face.
" Y/N! Please. " Jason begs, taking a step towards me.
I blow past him towards the door. " Take care of yourself Jason. Hope your job's worth it. "
The large wooden doors of the church clatter behind me. With every step a small pinch of relief floods my body.
I'm going to be okay. With or without Jason Todd.
