---- :: Brownman Ali - trumpet :: Nick Maclean - piano :: Ben Duff - bass :: Jacob Wutzke - drums ---- FROM PRESS RELEASE Led by 29-year old fast-rising piano star NICK MACLEAN -- an 8x Global Music Award winner and one of the most in-demand young jazz piano players in Toronto -- this contemplative yet thrilling quartet delivers jazz between the two poles of thoughtful introspection and powerhouse conveyance, taking influences from Herbie Hancock's primordial 1960's Blue Note era recordings. Maclean's quartet heavily features one of Canada's most provocative improvising trumpet players -- BROWNMAN ALI -- an internationally acclaimed, multi-award winning jazz iconoclast who has been heralded as "Canada's preeminent jazz trumpet player" by New York City's Village Voice and is best known globally as the last trumpet player to play in the legendary jazz-hip-hop group GURU's JAZZMATAZZ. For this show, Ali & Maclean stand shoulder-to-shoulder with 2 of Canada's top-tier 20-somethings: BEN DUFF on upright bass, and JACOB WUTZKE on drums as the group prepares to record their second studio album - a hotly anticipated follow up of their decorated debut release RITES OF ASCENSION (2017, Browntasauras Records).
A big thanks to the Toronto Arts Council, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Canada Council for the Arts for their support in our upcoming recording sessions!

Hey Holly, any music you been keen on lately?
I've been listening to a lot of jungle & other similar electronic / dnb music lately. Lot of 4hero. Had some friends introduce me to their stuff and I've been chewing through their discography. (IDK if you remember that one "Tom & Jerry Maximum Booty Style" vid that was going around a while back - Tom & Jerry was one of the aliases 4hero used for their work sometimes, haha.) I had another pal recommend the "Jungle Fatigue" series of albums - real fun compilations of work from modern jungle artists. Liking them a lot!
I've also gotten back into Autechre recently because I realized I've only really listened to like 2 of their albums. I've heard a few singles but never went out of my way to listen to the albums they were from for some reason. I'm kicking myself a little for not doing that til now, but the second best time to get into something is always "right now", y'know? Plus it's fun to remember there's new things to listen to from artists you like. LOL
There's a Canadian jazz trio I like called Local Talent (James Hill AKA "Projectwhatever", Rich Brown, and Ian Wright, if those names mean anything to y'all) that I come back to every now and then. "Higienópolis" is one of my favourite albums ever made. They have a second album called "REMOTISM" that I keep forgetting to listen to. Gonna do that tomorrow (or today if I have the time), but I liked the one song I heard off the album already, so I feel like me enjoying it is a foregone conclusion.

what music would the TWST boys listen to ?
— yay first post! i’ve thought about this question a lot, especially as someone with a varied taste in music. i look up character playlists and… honestly, most of them have the same songs in them. which isn’t a bad thing at all! but i think if we’re going to look at this realistically, it’s good to have a variety. anyways, enough yapping!
heartslabyul — 🃏
riddle would most likely listen to classical music starting off. considering his mom, it’s very possible he wasn’t allowed to listen to a lot of modern music. as time goes on though, i like to think he listens to songs with soft acoustics and catchy hooks. what i’m thinking specifically is “i will follow you into the dark” by death cab for cutie. it would help him calm down for his anger issues and feel like he’s loved, even for a moment.
ace’s music taste is a little more basic. he’s a pretty simple guy! i think he’d listen to minnesotan hip hop, maybe even meme rap. something catchy, modern, but with a layer of irony behind it. i have a feeling he’d really like Brother Ali. maybe something less calm from him, though. he wants to be hyped up!
deuce wants to change. he has a whole moment in book 5 on how he wants to find himself and stop changing himself for the sake of other people. so, he tried listening to classical music. but he just couldn’t get into it. i think it’s more likely he listens to gangster rap / west coast rap. no one post modern, but instead artists like eazy-e and n.w.a. he’s mildly aware of newer artists but he doesn’t necessarily understand them. he’s a sucker for the classics!
cater canonically listens to the top 100 songs. but also cater is a pretty deep character. he doesn’t have a lot of trust in people so it’s very unlikely he’s honest about a lot of things, including his music taste. while cater SAYS he listens to popular songs, i think he’s a sucker for pop punk. waterparks and fall out boy are is jam! he would listen to them while skating!
trey gave me a bit of trouble. when i first made my headcanons, i joked around with my friends on how it’s more likely he’d listen to asmr than music. i still think that’s a bit true but when i asked around for other people’s opinions on what he listens to, i got another joke answer saying “british people music”. that’s when it hit me. classic rock! artists like the beatles, led zeppelin, and david bowie! he’s kind of a family guy so he probably listened to these songs growing up and he’s never quite ventured any further. it’s a little unconventional for the modern day world of pop but i think it suits him!
savanaclaw — 🏜
i think leona is a little more of a romantic than he’s willing to admit. it obviously wouldn’t show in the game but it bleeds a lot more into his tastes. the man may not know how to dress but he can treat a lady well! so i think he listens to classic jazz. he would definitely dance in the kitchen with you while listening to “somethin’ stupid” by frank sinatra! it maybe be hard to believe but underneath all that rough fur is a good person who wants to love as much as he wants to live.
ruggie’s felt a little too obvious to me. golden age hip hop! again, nothing too new but i like the idea that he somehow stumbles upon the most under appreciate artists ever and goes to their live shows! live shows that are mostly basement concerts lol. i can see him growing up on MF DOOM, though. his grandma probably subjected him to a lot of The Jackson 5 too! grammy don’t need fancy!
jack was another one that gave me a hard time. ok, honestly, i had a hard time with 3 other characters on this list but i did some more thinking and i’m content on my stances now! anyways, jack isn’t a very hardcore guy. in fact, i think he’s pretty classy. i think he listens to jazz pop. im specifically thinking of michael bublé. fun fact, it’s a popular headcanon that jack is canadian and michael bublé is listened as canadian pop lol. i didnt even realize that until i looked up what genre he was
octavinelle — 🪸
azul was another one that gave me trouble. im joking when i say this but i think he’d listen to those alpha bro podcasts and says that music is a waste of time. but as a serious answer? jazz blues. maybe even soul blues if he’s feeling like listening to something with lyrics. duke ellington feels like it would be a good fit!
floyd listens to vocaloid and i will refuse to elaborate on this.
oh still here?
ok im joking, of course. gotta have a little fun on this blog and keep you on your toes. but hes pretty unpredictable and loses interest in things very easily. i think there’s no one genre that he gravitates towards. he just finds specific songs he likes and listens to them until he gets bored. his playlist is awful because he goes from musicals, to pop, to Debussy in one sitting. it’s genuine whiplash to give jaxe the aux because you don’t know what you’re gonna get when he hits shuffle.
i’m still right though. this man would listen to vocaloid.
jade is interesting because not a lot of things can keep his interest. it’s easy to say he’s like floyd and has a wide taste in music but that’s way too easy. plus, he has a genuine system going on in his head. while there is no pattern in chaos, there needs to be some semblance of pleasure. so i think he’s a fan of noise rock and hardcore. jesus piece is a definitive. you never know what’ll happen in those songs. each moment is filled to the brim with noise that doesn’t even leave you a moment to think. jade would be a fan of that.
scarabia — 🏝
it’s pretty canon that kalim prefers folk party music. he’s seen in multiple vignettes hosting parties where there’s live music that he plays in. but i wanna add something. the whole reason why he joined the pop music club was because of lillia’s performance where he had his little screamo moment, right? i don’t think it’d be that much of a stretch to think he’d be into that music wise. so i think kalim could really be into industrial and hyperpop! but really, he can be into anything just as long as it’s loud and amps him up. rob zombie, most likely. nothing more violent than that! he’ll feel bad :(
jamil is the one i’ve thought about the most. he IS my oshi, after all. i think he listens to a mixture of dance pop, disco pop, and a bit of female oriented rap. jamil is a munchkin and proud. he wants something to make him feel hot because his only coping mechanism is how he maintains himself. its easier to feel hot by yourself when youre listening to music than to deal with the idea of being perceived! :D
pomefiore — 🍏
vil definitely listens to pop. i think that’s a given for any influencer. but i also think he has a secret love for musicals! he’s most likely a classically trained actor, after all. all pomefiore kids give me the vibe of theater kids, especially because theyre actors. ride the cyclone is probably a favorite among him. and wicked. especially wicked.
rook is the one that gave me the hardest time. i didnt exactly know what he’d like to listen to because… frankly he doesnt share next to anything about himself so its near impossible to do a reading on him. like, genuinely, what the fuck. but yk. he IS a fanboy of neige. it isnt hard to imagine he likes k-pop and j-pop (or the twst equivalent). honestly, the idea that he’s a stan is so funny to me that i cant imagine him listening to much of anything else. that man writes fanfiction can poetry be considered fanfiction? about his classmates!!! he can be considered a stan!!!!!!! just an extremely eccentric one
ngl i dont know a lot about asian pop but uh… i like MAMAMOO and MOMOLAND???? literally cannot give you recommendations for this one soz
epel’s music taste came to me the moment i played chapter 5. country rap that’s a little misogynistic. yes epel is one of those kids who went thru a “i hate women” phase when he was younger because he didnt know how to grapple with his own ideas of how to be comfortable with his masculinity and femininity and wanted to uphold traditional gender roles due to a lack of fundamental misunderstanding of feminist theory and how the patriarchy includes men and a general insecurity of his body. i cannot give you recommendations because i am not a misogynist and the only country rapper i like is girliepop
ignihyde — 🎧
idia’s music taste is already confirmed. premo is said to be a hardcore metal idol group that has concerts until everyone passes out. i get a lot of people think he listens to vocaloid and other internet famous genres but tbh i think he thinks that hes too good for that shit. idia is a hipster before he is a nerd. idia would listen to PassCode, a heavy metal idol group. the only difference between it and premo is that PassCode has a more eletronica feel to it. itd fit right at home with our resident leet speak gamer. this is my PassCode propaganda post. listen to PassCode.
i cant say what orthro’s music taste is because i havent played through chapter 6 yet (im trying to upgrade all my srs to level 30 first). but i dont think he’d listen to music. this can be amended tho when i play thru it and i feel like my position has changed
diasomnia — 🪡
malleus was not hard for me at all. to be fair, i originally wrote all of these down on an instagram post and by the end, i was a little delirious. or just in tune with my creativity. either way, i was on a roll. i think malleus would listen to a mixture of musicals, opera, and ballet. it very specifically needs to be classical music that has a performance with it. considering that malleus is kind of a gamer, i think his attention span is a little short to stand an hour of pure music. plus, theyre things you can be invited to and experience with friends / family. imo, he’s a fan of swan lake and the phantom of the opera. something so hauntingly beautiful you cant look away with the added bonus of being able to peer into the tragedy of mortality and the human condition.
lilia listens to screamo and i have nothing to elaborate on that. i pray everyday that he listens to be your own pet. he probably has and legally that means i must sacrifice my life for him
silver would listen to bedroom pop. get it? ehhh? wow tough crowd. but i think he’d listen to bedroom pop because despite everyone’s attempts to get him into metal as an attempt to keep him awake, the slow and sleepy melodies of mxmtoon singing about simple joys in life is just too enchanting to turn away. hes a human first before hes a retainer. humans cant help but indulge in the simple pleasures
sebek was only tricky because i do not care for his character. for everyone else, i have some sort of interest in them but diasomnia just… doesnt exactly appeal to me for some reason. anyways, i think he’d listen to new age jazz. new age jazz is pretty easy to understand and can be as loud or as soft as one wants. probably something with instrumentals because he wants to focus on whatever hes doing rather than the music. new age and not the classics because he is still 16 and like… not as old as malleus lol
— thanks for reading ~

Apologies on my part if I've asked one question too many, but I'd like to know if you've got any recommended readings for where to study the 1920s! The era's always fascinated me, and your AU has rekindled that appreciation for it, so I was wondering if you could point me in a direction to go and stumble down! Apologies again if I'm at all a nuisance! And apologies for the apologies, that's the Canadian in me speaking.
I don't really have a clear answer for this. Like, I don't have a centralized repository of info I reference when researching. I kinda just Google what I need to find out. Reddit is a great resource. Do not use Pinterest, especially for vintage fashion. You'll mostly just get inaccurate, modern recreations (there's also a lot of AI crap on there now, which is obviously terrible for research).
If you have the passion to research this era, then you should have no problem finding out what you need. Like, my "in" was my passion for jazz music and history. One day I looked into what jazz in the 20s sounded like, and I sorta just went down a rabbit hole.

Eden Yeon-Jin Seong
Eden is a first-generation Canadian. His parents George (Min-Joon) and Evelyn (In-Hae) immigrated to Canada from South Korea before Eden and his siblings were born. Prior to arriving in Canada, George and Evelyn spent a number of years in the UK where they learned English and attended university. They decided to give themselves "English names" during that time, and after arriving in Canada they both had their names legally changed to include the English first names. Now, instead of Seong Min-Joon and Seong In-Hae, they're legally known as George and Evelyn Seong. When their kids, Sadie, Charlie and Eden were born, they decided to give them a western name as well as a Korean name, so they would have the opportunity to choose without requiring a legal name change. Eden loves his name and is very proud of it.
Eden is a competitive figure skater. He's been skating since the age of four. He began to learn figure skating at age six and started competing in local pre-Novice events around age nine. Eden loves skating and being on the ice makes him happy. It's not because he's competitive and likes to perform (although he is very competitive), but mainly because skating is fun for him and he enjoys challenging himself to learn and improve all the time.
His other passion is dance. He was dancing before he was skating, and he's studied various types of dance from ballet to jazz to modern/contemporary. Currently, he teaches dance to children part-time to help support himself, and he's thinking that after his skating career is over, he'd like to be a dance instructor as a full-time career.
He loves grilled cheese sandwiches. They're his favourite comfort food.
He never had a pet until he got a home of his own. Now he has a horse named Eun-Ae, who was a gift from his partner Haru, and he's happily learning to ride and learning all about horse care.

Music Born of the Cold
Tumblr media
Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq won the Polaris Prize in 2014 for Canada's best album of the year. Animism contained sounds never heard before in Canadian pop music: breathy throat singing, screeches, roars and other human sounds for which the English language has no names. Tagaq's music was ambiguous. She seemed a shamanic figure.
Suddenly, she and other throat singers were everywhere. Indigenous artist Caroline Monnet incorporated Tagaq soundtracks into her hypnotic art videos. Some touring rock groups hired throat singers as opening acts. For a time, no television variety program was complete without a guest spot for throat singers.
Tagaq may have seemed like a new and unique voice. But she had basically jazzed up a genre of Inuit music that has been performed on the land we now call Canada for thousands of years. Inuit throat singing, or katajjaq, is a distinct type of throat singing uniquely found among the Inuit. It is a form of musical performance, traditionally consisting of two women who sing duets in a close face-to-face formation with no instrumental accompaniment, in an entertaining contest to see who can outlast the other. One singer leads by setting a short rhythmic pattern, which she repeats leaving brief silent intervals between each repetition. The other singer fills in the gap with another rhythmic pattern.
The sounds used include voiced sounds as well as unvoiced ones, both through inhalation or exhalation. The first to run out of breath or be unable to maintain the pace of the other singer will start to laugh or simply stop and will thus be eliminated from the game. It generally lasts between one and three minutes. The winner is the singer who beats the largest number of people.
Originally, katajjaq was a form of entertainment among Inuit women while men were away on hunting trips, and it was regarded more as a type of vocal or breathing game in the Inuit culture rather than a form of music. Katajjiniq sound can create an impression of rhythmic and harmonious panting. Inuit throat singing can also imitate wind, water, animal sounds and other everyday sounds.
Notable traditional performers include Qaunak Mikkigak, Kathleen Ivaluarjuk Merritt, as well as Alacie Tullaugaq and Lucy Amarualik who perform in the katajjaq style. Several groups, including Tudjaat, The Jerry Cans, Quantum Tangle and Silla + Rise, also now blend traditional throat singing with mainstream musical genres such as pop, folk, rock and dance music.
Tudjaat (Madeleine Allakariallak and Phoebe Atagotaaluk) performed on the song "Rattlebone" from Robbie Robertson's 1998 album Contact from the Underworld of Red Boy. The album is composed of music inspired by Aboriginal Canadian music (including traditional Aboriginal Canadian songs and chants), as well as modern rock, trip hop, and electronica, with the various styles often integrated together in the same song.
To learn more, watch this video of Inuit throat-singing sisters Karin and Kathy Kettler from Canada. The sisters carry on the traditions of the elders from their mothers' village in Kangiqsualujjuaq, Nunavik, which is located in northern Quebec.

1, 7, and 13 for the asks please!
1: What band got you into prog? How did you find them?
I think it was Rush (of course). This is a weird story of how I got into them: I listened to a lot of radio in my younger years, and found a really good station that did classical, jazz, and varying levels of classic rock, adult contemporary, indie bands, etc. On Fridays they used to do in-depth plays and discussions into classic albums, and one day they picked Rush’s “2112”, and explained the sci-fi space opera concept, which was very interesting to a sci-fi/fantasy obsessed younger me. In addition to that, I was reading Ernest Cline’s “Ready Player One”, wherein Rush and “2112” hold a surprising amount of plot importance (not as much in the movie though). On top of that my guitar teacher at the time was a huge Rush fan, so when I mentioned my interest in Rush, he gladly started teaching me “Fly By Night” and regaling me about the band and how good they were. So between those three influences Rush quickly established me into the prog rock side of music (somewhat unconnected from this was my discovery of power and progressive metal, which also gave me a laundry list of band names and artists to listen to and research cause everyone is connected to someone).
7: Song or Album recommendations?
I have many. But in the interests of brevity I’ll do one album and one song, each by a different band.
Album/band: “Mosaic” by Theocracy. This band played a big influence in my discovery of power and prog metal, as the band being overtly Christian allowed me to convince my Christian parents that they were ok to listen to. Even as I’ve expanded my music tastes, this band has always been one I come back to every now and then, and with the release of “Mosaic” their fifth album late last year, I dove back into their music and found them still just as good as when I left them.
https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNmepQD4Vqf0en2aBxIXpDyg_PENVqxws
Song: “Starlifter: Fearless Pt. 2” by Crown Lands. This band is to Rush what Greta Van Fleet is to Led Zeppelin. Made up of two Canadians: singer/drummer Cody Bowles, and guitarist/bassist/keyboardist Kevin Comeau, they revive the classic rock and prog style with some modern production values, and do a killer job of it. I think this band will do numbers on progblr here.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JTKOPIGgddg&pp=ygUac3RhcmxpZnRlciBmZWFybGVzcyBwdC4gaWk%3D
13: Which musicians inspire me the most?
Definitely Tobias Sammet and Avantasia. Something about his musicality and lyricism just hits me so hard every time I listen to it.
A few others that sit high on my inspiration list would be Alice Cooper, Judas Priest, The Who, Meat Loaf/Jim Steinman, and a list of various jazz, world, classical, and folk artists.

what are some of your phenomal book recs? please i need to read more good books
OK HI
If you're looking for queer books:
The City and the Pillar by Gore Vidal
(post-wwii story about queerness and identity and coming into yourself)
Johnny Appleseed and Fullmetal Indigiqueer by Joshua Whitehead
(brilliant stories by an indigenous Canadian person about gender, sexuality, person, and place)
Zami: a new spelling of my name by Audre Lorde
(not quite an autobiography of a brilliant queer black woman)
Black Jesus and Other Superheroes by venita Blackburn
(the most beautiful short story collection I have ever read. Queer, black, rhythmic, stunning. Please, if you only choose one of my books, pick this one).
Non-queer but they're great:
Inherent Vice and Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pinchon
(amazing books about history, reality, and comedy. Cannot reccomend highly enough)
Libra by Don Delillo
(a story about the Kennedy assassination. Meaningful look at what we think of history)
Paradise, Beloved, Jazz by Toni Morrison
(her "trilogy" on historical blackness. Fundamentally brilliant. I especially reccomend Paradise, the story of a town told through the women)
The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead
(an anachronistic slave narrative that brilliantly confronts race and history)
Borderlands/La Frontera by Gloria Anzaladua
(a piece about modern identity centered around queerness, identity, and the America/México divide)
House of Leaves by Mark z. Danielewski
(a fundamental deconstruction of the form of the book)
I absolutely have others but I think these will be it for now! If anyone wants more lemme know

Well, I had many ideas of what to request, one of the first and main ones I was gonna ask was like, the Canadian werewolf (my pfp) x gn!neutral or afab reader based fanfic. Maybe a continuation from the video where he starts teaching jellybean how to be a werewolf, introducing them to the pack (and being a little overprotective of them) and just overall showing them around the islands and that kind of thing. The werewolf video is one of my top favorite characters Jim has created.
Yeah, that werewolf is such a sweet character and the video is very cute - I love modern werewolves being portrayed like found family and/or a proper commune - "mutual aid", communism as in "community" and all that jazz. :)

Just added to YouTube:
Nick Holder - "Da Sambafrique" Mundial Muzique (A Selection of Modern Afro-Caribbean, Latin, and Brazilian Rhythms) Song released in 1998. Compilation released in 1999. Deep House / Latin House
Such a lovely, loungey groove from Canadian house legend Nick Holder here. Great blend of melodies between the soothing electric piano and then the splashier sax that comes in later a couple different times. Dig the bottle-clinking percussion too.
Of course, Holder didn't come up with this whole song on his own, though. It's actually a cover of a Latin jazz fusion tune from 1983 by the dynamic Dave Matthews (NO, NOT THAT DAVE MATTHEWS!).
"Da Sambafrique" was already on YouTube too, but not this specific edit as it appears on the tremendous Mundial Muzique comp from what was probably Chicago's premier deep house label of the 90s, Guidance Recordings.
