hello can nick and i get married yet just asking for a friend
#he's the weirdest dude but he's so fucking patient with me#i need someone patient and stable to ride the emotional waves with me until i get better at self regulating#so far i'm getting really good at telling him that i need a minute or i'm going to be mean and passive aggressive#so then he gives me a minute and i regroup and then can speak rationally#which is GREAT for me who was once so brutally cruel instinctively#anyway by patient and stable i didn't mean he's my punching bag#i just meant that he doesn't match my extreme emotions (he will match excitement and happiness) and thus provides a baseline#like he stays steady so when i'm upset or mad he'll ask why and i break it down and by the time it's broken down i'm like... okay#so there was no reason to be upset#and we talk about impact vs intent all the time like sometimes he a lil weird in talking so it comes off bad#but yeah he's just really stable and so it's easy to bring myself back if no one is hyping me up#and whenever i'm irritated with him i'll still call his ass and put myself on mute and fall asleep with him on the phone#he's very good at calling me out too (he's also great at taking accountability if he does something)#like one time he showed me a video and i only watched a sec before jumping down his throat#and he called me out and i apologized and redirected and all#one time he had an attitude (when I was upset) and i was like dude what's with the tone#he's also good at like... idk what to call it#but he told me during one of those times when i was upset that it wasn't fair to him to say no but then expect him to do it anyway#because how was he supposed to know when to listen to me and when to not? it was a no win for him and it wasn't fair#and you know what? he was so correct and true for it#i apologized for that too#anyway. when can i marry him.#nick

Shining Bright
Fred Weasley x Reader
Plot: After hours gives you and Fred the opportunity for heart to heart conversations.
Genre: PG-13 (Fluff/Comfort)
A/N: Hello everyone! Happy 2024! Can't think of much to say but recent works have been influenced by personal experiences. This is a way for me to process and escape reality even if it's for a few seconds. But I definitely do hope and believe things will be better. Cheers and I wish you a good year!
Tumblr media
"Thank you! See you again!" You thank the last satisfied customer that walks out of your bookstore. It was time to pack up for the day. As you shelve new arrivals, the bell at the front rings. A smile is automatically etched on your face as it could only mean...
"Fred!"
"Hello love," Fred Weasley kisses you on the cheek as he takes some books from the box to join you in shelving. "Thought I could drop by to help you and maybe we could head down to a nice Fish and Chip place just outside Diagon Alley. Dad took all of us for Christmas dinner and even Ron loved it."
You laugh at Ron finally finding the appeal in Muggle cuisine. "Sure. I just need to shelve this whole box and I'm done for the day."
Fred could have just whipped out his wand to make the whole process faster. He really wanted to spend more time with you. But he also knew how much your ritual at the end of each work day meant to you. So like the gentleman he was, he starts off with the top shelve.
For a while, the two of you worked in silence. Honestly, it was a much needed reprieve.
"Are you sure that George doesn't need help?"
"Nah," Fred waves away your concerns. "You're more important."
"What a sap." You tease.
"And you love it."
With Fred's help, you manage to shelve the books in no time and the lights to your bookstore go off. Night comes and the street lights give a pleasant warm glow to the cobbled streets of Diagon Alley. Families and couples take the streets, eager to spend their weekends away from responsibilities. Fred holds your hand and directs it to his pocket.
A light drizzle comes, bringing more magic to the already magical street. You catch Fred's eyes and no one can see, but he holds you tighter.
"Thanks." You mumbled, feeling slightly embarrassed that this came out of nowhere. Perhaps it was the weather that was making you sentimental.
"What for?" Fred cocks his head curiously.
"Supporting me," you say, "I was at my lowest point with everyone doubting my decision of leaving the Ministry. Even my own family. They thought that the problem lied with me. That I was weak minded and I should have put in more effort to prove myself." You exhale shakily. Yeah, it was definitely the rain.
A frown appears on Fred's face and in the artificial lights, his freckles are more pronounced. The both of you stop and you realize that you are under a street lamp. He turns to you with a serious expression.
"This is how I see you." He points up to the lights and back to you. "You shine so bright even when you're going through difficult times."
You lower your head, overwhelmed by the unwavering support that Fred gave you throughout your struggles. It wasn't easy. Having to tell your family that you decided to give up your stable and cushy career at the Ministry to open up a bookstore. It was your passion, your dream. Ever since you were young, books had gotten you through the most tough times.
"So, don't ever doubt yourself. You're doing amazing." Fred encourages you. You smile weakly and he knows it's one of those days where you need a cheerleader. He wraps himself around your waist and lifts you up, voice projecting across the whole street.
"MY GIRLFRIEND IS THE GREATEST HUMAN BEING AND I'M BLESSED TO BE HERS!"
"Fred! What are you- put me down!" You were more amused than anything else and it seemed to have done the trick as you had burst into laughter, positively red in the face.
"Not until you admit that you are the greatest human being." Fred insists.
"What? I'm- Fred don't be ridiculous."
"Nope. HEY EVERYONE-"
"Okay! Okay! I'm the greatest human being on this planet!" You yell, attracting a couple of stares from shoppers. Fred finally puts you down and once you make contact with flat ground again, you grab his wrist and before the both of you know it, the two of you are running through what has now become a sudden downpour.
As you run through Diagon Alley, laughing with your childhood sweetheart and biggest supporter, you can't help but to think that this was definitely the right decision.
One door closes, another door opens. Sometimes, everything happens for a reason. It sounds illogical but it definitely helped you to embrace all sorts of crazy.
At least, you had a handsome (and equally crazy) ginger to support you through everything.

i do enjoy serving myself easy no-pressure huaxuan touch and intimacy
i like the idea that from the time they meet (shortly after he xuan's death, centuries before xie lian's third ascension, i've so far written a post of just one of many optional head canons i have of that) being together is not something they're focused on particularly, but something that evolves kind of unthinkingly after years of knowing each other and both perhaps being a little lonely, wanting some comfort while they wait for their core desire to come within reach
and so its just kind of easy and not meaningful but nice, hua cheng putting his arm around he xuan while they're having dinner, he xuan leaning back and resting again hua cheng's shoulder after they've eaten and are just being cozy.
(most of the time they get together involves food :P)
i also head canon that he xuan lives in the wilderness for a long time after he becomes a ghost, but once he knows hua cheng he visits the city for little outings
when he xuan's form is more stable, hua cheng coaxes him into coming to hang out at the newly set up gamblers den, but he xuan hasnt been around people for a long time and gets a bit overwhelmed by all the noise so hua cheng yells at everyone to gamble silently and brings he xuan behind the curtain to relax on some comfy cushions as the ghosts whisper-gamble. they lay side by side just hanging out in a comfortable not-necessarily-romantic physical intimacy sort of way.. and/or hua cheng orders a feast for them. (hua cheng just wants to PROVIDE ok, he needs an outlet if he can't meet xie lian for 800 years)
i think once they become sort of fixtures in each others lives, they start to explore their forms together. hua cheng has been around for a while (maybe its already after mt tonglu if he already has ghost city relatively up and running? what is hua cheng's timeline with this? although i don't really care how closely fitting w canon my huaxuan dreaming is...) he xuan only recently got powerful enough for physical form and hua cheng kind of enjoys witnessing him figuring things out. although hua cheng has his own forms he really likes by now, with his red and silver and butterflies, he humours he xuan to go for water monster swims together, because he xuan really loves being a monster.
hua cheng marvels at this, he thinks he IS monstrous and has always been drawn towards forms and adornments of glamour and beauty in resistance to his own monstrosity, realizes while playing with he xuan that he hates the feeling of being a real monster. but hua cheng is still amazed and a little warmed by little ghost he xuan's enthusiasm for monstrosity.
maybe one time he xuan transforms to a creepy camouflaging bottom dweller sea monster and hua cheng is the most frilly, ethereal, kaleidescope colour changing sea creature. he xuan is all, can't take you anywhere hmph! but they go for a swim together.)
after a few times hua cheng decides monster jams are not for him. maybe after declining to be a monster in future hua cheng gives he xuan the bone dragons so he has water creatures to swim around with, and he xuan is like i can't accept this and hua cheng is like * shrugs * you'll pay me back one day
hence the centuries running joke that never ends. where hua cheng keeps giving he xuan things and saying i'll add it to your debt. (he xuan is a spoiled ghost baby and has no issue with it ^^)
i will never shut up about the idea (not mine) that hua cheng invokes "the debt" to make himself feel comfortable that he has control, when mostly all people other than xie lian were so cruel to him, and he xuan lets it be, that and perhaps he was such a well-loved golden son and he's just like "well yeah, i should get stuff".
lifting this straight from the conclusion of @muigiel 's brilliant quanyinxuan fan fic ... (maybe i'm a fan) but in a more canon compliant reality than the one i've been dreaming of i think of hua cheng not really knowing how friendship, care, etc, works, and after all the ways he xuan helped him with xie lian stuff, or held back on retaliating on xie lian interfering with his revenge (to a point) out of consideration for hua cheng...
HC so you must be finally trying to even the score
HX uh, score?
HC yeah
HX you mean ... the way i'm helping you for no direct benefit to myself?
HC yeah
HX the way you helped me when i was a new ghost, when i could offer you nothing in return?
HC ...
HX please tell me you know the debt thing was a joke
HC ...
HX please tell me you know that we're friends
HC ...
HC *tearing up*
HC y- yeah ...
HX *sighs*
HX do you need a hug
HC *nods*
bwahahaha ok lies about the canon compliance. any time i write about them for long enough i can't resist making them cuddle

Chapter 10: Daniel in Danger
Not every secret can stay hidden...
Leah Nguyen is an OC created by my good friend Shima, who was gracious enough to allow me to include her in the story! Please go give Shima some love <3 Leah is from @elganac and Shima is on twitter @/ShimaVT
The ground gave way under my feet suddenly. Scrambling in a moment of panic, I found myself unable to catch the ledge, tumbling down the side of the cliff. I only managed to survive by the skin of my teeth, my hands finding purchase on a root jutting out from the cliffside. It was steep enough that if I hadn’t caught myself, I would’ve been a goner for sure. “Shit, oh shit,” were all the words I could think to say in that moment, seeing my friends look on in absolute horror as they saw me tumbling to what was almost certainly my death.
“Shit, Daniel,” Jack called out to me as he looked over the edge, “Dude are you okay?”
“Oh, yeah! Just fine,” I shouted back, “In fact, the view’s pretty nice down here, why don’t you come join me?”
“NOW IS NOT THE TIME,” Nico screeched at both of us, full blown panic on her face, “Oh my god oh my god, what do we do? Do we have a rope? No, we don’t, god, I knew we shouldn’t have traveled so far from camp! Now Daniel’s gonna die and we can’t do anything about it!”
“I’m not gonna die Nico, I’ll be fine!”
“Nothing about you says fine right now! Hang on, I’m gonna get the teacher, just wait right here!”
“Trust me, it’s not like I can go anywhere-” Wait. Of course, that’s it! “Hang on Nico, table that teacher thing for now!”
“Excuse me?? Dude, this is not the time to try and show off!”
“No, no, seriously! I have an idea… but, I need you both to trust me. Promise, you will not freak out.”
“Freak out? I’m already freaking out,” Nico’s panic was palpable. Hell, she was almost making me nervous! “What are you just gonna fuckin sprout wings or somethin??”
“JUST PROMISE!”
Nico was about to open her mouth again, but Jack placed a hand in front of it, giving her a look. “We promise.. Do whatever you gotta do..”
Okay.. Easy now Rowe, no need to panic. With where I was at now, the angle should be just right to… yes, okay, good. Just two solid leaps, and I should be back on stable ground. “Just like I practiced,” I whispered to myself.
Get the feeling back in the legs. Feet firm against the wall. Focus… and-
I let go.
Despite Nico’s sudden scream, I maintain that focus. Feel the pressure build under my feet, and-
THOOM.
Suddenly I’m in the air. Everything is dead silent after that thunderous boom of my kickoff, and it’s just me, and the wind. I landed on a nearby cliff, about twenty feet up from where I was, on the opposite end of the ravine. Good.
I crouched down, feeling that pressure build up again. I let loose-
KRACK
The ground cracks underneath my feet as I leap into the air, clearing not only the gap across to my friends, but making it up another thirty or so feet, landing squarely next to them, brushing myself off.
Their mouths are agape, slack-jawed, staring at me as they get their first look at my abilities that I’d tried so hard to hide from everyone, for all these years. That super strength I’d been blessed with at birth, finally coming out in front of anyone.
Jack was the first to speak up, “So.. since when the hell can you do that?”
“Uh… since… I dunno, since forever? I was… born with these powers, Jack.”
“BORN with them? Bro, I’ve known you since we were like, six, and you didn’t think to bring up the fact that you’re a fuckin superhero?”
“I try not to bring attention to it. I don’t wanna be treated differently because of my powers.”
“Hang on,” Nico piped up, “But you play baseball. You could be the top player if you’ve got super strength. You’re not even in the top ten.”
“I hold back. Like I said, I try not to draw attention to them, so.. I hold back. Like, a lot. I mean, I had thought about, maybe senior year, giving it a little extra in baseball, really make this school remember me, y’know? But, for now, I just use plain old normal strength.”
“So.. how strong is super strong to you, exactly?” Nico seemed more curious than Jack. But, I owed them some answers, I suppose.
“Uh… I never really measured the extent of it, but I know I can lift two of those old cars in the junkard with one hand.. My top running speed measures out at about fifty miles an hour… what else… oh, and I can heal super fast. Nasty cuts last a couple hours… broken bones, maybe a day at most. Never been too keen to measure how far that one goes. Getting hurt sucks.”
“So, back in eighth grade when you broke your arm and wore a cast all that time?”
I shrug, “Fake. Had to keep up appearances.”
They looked like they were about to ask about a thousand more questions before we heard a twig snap behind us. My head whipped around to see the source. Shit, who else could have possibly… oh no.
There she was. Leah Nguyen…With her beautiful brown eyes and her- no, wait, focus Rowe! How long has she been there? How much did she see? Her mouth was just as wide open as Jack and Nico’s… don’t tell me she saw-
Nico turned to Jack, “Grab her.”
Jack nodded, walking toward Leah with a weirdly menacing gait.
“Wait, hold on-” Leah tried to protest, but it was too late. Jack had grabbed her, covering her mouth with his hand before Nico and him dragged her away to somewhere more remote.
“Wait, guys!” I called out to them, “Why the hell are you two being so damn ominous?” I followed, making sure they weren’t about to do something really stupid. That was my department.

Filling Empty Spaces (Amy/Mitch), part 191
Mitch and Amy find an unexpected connection due to absent lovers. Set around season 11->.
A/N: I didn’t have a beta for this story, so hopefully there won’t be too many grammar errors.
* * * *
Later that night, Amy was mucking out the stalls with Lyndy close-by, playing with her toys on top one of the square bales, when Jack walked into the barn. He was a rare sight there these days as he had vowed to take it easy after officially retiring. Occasionally he would come and ride Buddy, but Lisa had insisted that he would leave the heavier lifting to the younger generation, and with the support of Amy and Georgie, Jack had finally agreed with the terms.
When Amy walked toward the wheelbarrow, holding a stable fork, she slowed down when she noticed her grandfather. Suddenly the place she called her therapy office - as it was so calming to her - was filled with anxious air, coming from both her and Jack. They both knew that talking was inevitable.
“Hey”, Jack began, using giving attention to Buddy as an excuse to occupy the space. “How are you feeling?” he asked from Amy as he let his hand softly glide on the horse’s neck.
“I’m okay. How are you?” Amy asked, the conversation formal.
“Well, restless, I guess”, Jack admitted. “I feel like I should talk to you. One on one. Not on the dinner table while everyone’s staring at us. Especially Tim”, he continued, his tone annoyed but directed toward his ex-son-in-law.
Amy put the stable fork on the side and wiped the hairs that had escaped from her braid on top of her head using her forearm. She was a little bit sweaty and red from heat and figured maybe a small break could be a good thing at this point.
“Yeah...?”
“I’d like to explain myself a little. Not because I want to excuse my behavior, but more like... because I want you to understand”, Jack replied. “I know I’m hard person to please, especially when it comes to changes.”
“I know. And I get that changes aren’t easy. But they are inevitable”, Amy pointed out. “Life is a constant change, I know that now. I can’t deny it anymore.”
Jack nodded. “You’re right. I know it’s hard to believe, but I know it too. It’s just the... rest that is so hard for me.”
“Why?” Amy asked.
Jack looked at his horse, imagining the life the animal still had left to live. Who knew, maybe he had even more years than him. Tomorrow was not promised.
“I think it’s just life. How it’s been for me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m thankful for everything I’ve had, but of course I have some regrets too”, Jack spoke, now looking at Amy. “These past months, I’ve really had to reflect my life more than ever.”
“There’s been a lot of changes”, Amy noted, making Jack nod.
“When Marion was born, Lyndy and I were over the moon. I couldn’t wait to teach her everything I knew. And for the longest time I was able to, but when it came to her teenage years, it was not easy. We drifted apart, and I think it’s just natural at that age. She was strong-willed, just like you and Lou are, and Lyndy encouraged that. I was sure she was going to be fine. And she was. The only time I was really worried about her was when Lyndy passed”, Jack shared.
Amy could recall that time, even though she was little. To her, mom had put on a brave face, but thinking back, that couldn’t have been easy for Marion. Knowing from her own experience, losing a mother on such young age was hard. Not that you were ever old enough for that...
“Lyndy was the nurturer and she took care of pretty much everything for us”, Jack recalled. “My part was to do my job well and bring in the bread, so to speak. Of course she had her music, but that wasn’t about making money for her, it was her passion. But we got by.”
One of the things Amy could remember her grandmother always telling her was “chase your dreams”, and she had tried to keep that in mind, even though some of her dreams scared her. But just as much as Heartland was Marion’s legacy, it was now Lyndy’s legacy too; Amy could have chosen to walk away from the ranch, but she had not. For her, doing what she did at Heartland was her dream. The dream Lyndy had always encouraged her to chase.
“When Lyndy passed... I felt like I had to step in for the both of us”, Jack went on. “What made it harder was that I had never really established that nurturer role with my daughter. So I really had to show up for Marion. I know she was already an adult, but... making decisions like marrying Tim didn’t exactly make me trust her judgment...” he continued, and even though he was dragging Tim - and partly Marion too - through the mud with his story, Jack trusted Amy to have enough maturity to recognize that even though things were okay now, it had not been easy back then.
Amy gave her a nod that let Jack know that she understood what he meant.
“So... maybe I stepped into Lyndy’s shoes too much at that point. And because that was foreign not only for me but for Marion as well, she resisted it. We got along, but there were a lot of fights too. She didn’t like me meddling with her life, but in a way I felt like I owed it to Lyndy to look after her”, Jack explained. “And so when Marion passed, I hardly felt like I had accomplished that with her. Like I had barely been her parent. But on top of those regrets... when Marion died, I then had to look after you girls too. I did that willingly, even though I had no idea what I was doing. I had not really been a father to Marion, how was I supposed to be a father figure to you two?”
Slowly, Amy was starting to see where Jack was coming from.
“And so... I was at that point again where I had to choose what my “parenting style” was even though I was a grandparent, and usually they are somewhat removed from the parenting part”, Jack said, doing the quotation marks next to his head. He could almost hear Mallory’s voice going on and on about some book that could offer him some tips. “But I couldn’t be. I was the only one you had. So... I felt the pressure even more; not only was I doing the job of myself, but your grandmother’s, mother’s and father’s too. Whatever parenting style I thought I’d have in mind went out the window very quickly when the reality hit. I’ve tried my best, but I fully recognize that I have not always been the best.”
Amy nodded sympathetically. “Well, I’m sure it has not been easy for you.”
“It hasn’t”, Jack admitted, “but it’s not because of any of you. It’s just the fact that I’m an unfinished man. But now... moving out from Heartland, retiring and taking a step back, I feel the pressure to feel like I am finished. That I’ve completed my part. But in so many ways I feel like I haven’t. And that’s where it’s hard for me to accept all the things I didn’t do - or I didn’t do right.”
Amy walked closer when he saw Jack’s eyes well.
“If I’m being quiet or seem unsupportive, it’s not because of you. It has everything to do with me. I am proud of you. I am proud of Lou too. The only person I am not proud of is myself”, Jack said, letting out a heavy sigh. “There is no doubt in my mind that your mother and grandmother are watching over you and feel proud of you and everything you’ve been able to accomplish - and the things you will still accomplish. And that’s what I should be focusing on instead of this... ridiculous self-pity.”
Amy leaned forward to give her grandfather a hug. Usually it was the other way around - typically she was the one being comforted - but now it looked like Jack needed it more than she did.
“In some ways I wish I was Tim”, Jack said as he embraced Amy. “I wish I could just waltz in and stand behind you because I don’t have the burden of my regrets at the back of my mind every second because you and Lou have both forgiven him. His biggest regret, leaving you two, has been wiped clean. Where as I have so many little regrets. But... I don’t know if I will ever be forgiven that same way.”
“Grandpa... There’s nothing to apologize for”, Amy said, pressing her cheek against her grandfather’s shoulder. “I’m sure it hasn’t been easy, but you still made sure we would know that you and Heartland would always be there for us.”
Jack gave Amy a soft squeeze. “I tried.”
“You did good”, Amy said.
They embraced each other in quiet for a while, before Jack continued.
“Another reason why I wish I was your father is because... he’ll be here for much longer than I will. He will see the success you’ll both achieve in your lifetimes.”
“You never know that”, Amy said, even though this wasn’t her favorite topic to cover. “I mean, I’m glad you’re both still here, and I hope you continue to be for years, but the shadow in dad’s brain proves that anything can happen. Even for him.”
“Well, thankfully he will still be here thanks to that surgery”, Jack said. “But then again, he is Teflon Tim...” he muttered.
Amy chuckled a little bit. “You two have come a long way...”
Jack nodded, admitting that. “We have.”
Amy was happy about it.
“One last thing...” the old man then said, leaning back and breaking the hug. “When it comes to your success, I guess I’m embarrassed.”
“For what?” Amy asked, looking back at him.
“The things you’ve been able to achieve, both you and Lou, it’s because you were skilled, driven and passionate about what you do”, he explained. “Sometimes when people are like that, they can be blind about the pitfalls. I’ve tried to protect you from them, but at the same time that has kept you from success. So it would almost be hypocritical of me to stand here and say how easy it is for me to be proud of you when I’ve been the one person standing in your way.”
Amy thought about it. “I’ve never seen it that way. I know you meant well, even though at the time it may have not come across that way and your intent was not clear to me.”
Jack nodded, feeling a little better upon realizing maybe he was not the monster in Amy’s mind that he was in his own.
“Well, if I didn’t say it clearly enough - I am proud of you, Amy. I’m sure you’ll make this place the best it can be”, Jack said, looking around the barn, as if imagining how it would end up looking like. “I always thought it would just be a cattle ranch, but your mother saw it could be more than that. And now you... you can see even more potential in it, Amy. How could I not be proud.”
Amy smiled, feeling her heart getting lighter.
“Thank you, Grandpa”, she said as she gave him a new hug.

Disregard my last ask because the latest issue raised a troubling question that I, as a black man, feel the need to clarify with you, a woman. That whole whole Ned Leeds/Betty Brant business is sexual assault via deception right? Like you know more about Clones and Spider-Man 616 than I but I feel like that’s besides the point because it happened to Betty. She is carrying the child of whom she thought was her dead ex-husband. And Ned clone has to know he is a clone. He has to know. Unlike Ben and Kaine, he has the awareness and information of the Jackal and the awareness of his progenitor’s death.
Or am I reaching too far and reading too far into things?
I'm glad you came back and asked this specific question because it's definitely something I have a lot of thoughts on, and I’m glad you asked my thoughts on it as a woman because I think this is one of those comic book storylines that’s hard for me to divorce that fact from -- the fact that I’m a woman definitely plays into how I view this storyline specifically and how it effects me, in ways I don’t think were necessarily intended by some of the writers involved in its ongoing arc who were not looking at things from the same perspective I’m coming at them from. I definitely don't think you're reaching or reading too far into things -- I think that is what's being presented on the page, albeit likely without authorial intent. Just as like a general disclaimer, I'm not closely following Spencer's run for the sheer reason that I'm not enjoying it very much, although I'm aware of the general directions it's taking through friends and social media. But I actually think this Betty/Ned issue goes back pretty far.
First things first, I think Clone Conspiracy really wreaked havoc on how Spider-Man as a series has always handled clones. Pre-Clone Conspiracy, there was a very clear clone narrative going on: clones are their own person, they are not direct copies or replacements of the original. You see this with Ben Reilly and you see it with the Gwen Stacy clones. Clones are treated as their own individuals, even if they have to struggle to get to that point -- there's even an issue of Spider-Man Unlimited where Ben and Betty go on a date. Betty doesn't know that Ben is Peter's clone -- he's introduced as his cousin -- and they both reflect on how you can't go back to the way things were. So even though Ben has all of Peter's memories regarding his initial romance with Betty, the narrative makes it clear that Ben and Betty cannot recapture that connection or that exact relationship.
Here's where Clone Conspiracy changed everything, in my opinion for the worse: Clone Conspiracy's clone narrative is that these clones are, essentially, the original person. I believe the Marvel wiki still actually lists the end of Clone Conspiracy as 616 Gwen Stacy's issue of death instead of Amazing Spider-Man #121, because Clone Conspiracy treated that Gwen not simply as a clone with all of the same memories, but as essentially Gwen resurrected through a cloning process. The Billy Connors who was cloned is treated as the same Billy Connors who was killed by his father in Shed (Amazing Spider-Man #630-633). And the clone Ned is treated as the same as 616 Ned. This is a mess, to put it simply, because it goes against all the previous Spider-Man cloning narratives and, honestly, most popular sci-fi clone narratives, and it's seriously undermining decades of good Spider-Man storytelling in ways that Slott didn't address and that Spencer seems unwilling to. It probably wouldn't have been a very big deal -- a frustrating one, but not a big one -- if all of the clones had perished at the end of Clone Conspiracy, but they didn't. Billy Connors escaped, and it's immensely frustrating to me to see Peter treating the Connors family reunion as something he can tolerate when Curt Connors ate his kid, and the Ned clone slithered away in the gutters to, I assume, spite me personally.
Which brings us to the current Betty Brant storyline in Amazing Spider-Man, where Betty has showed up heavily pregnant and informed Peter that the child is Ned's.
Tumblr media
Yeah, I would say this is in fact the worst possible part. (ASM (2018) #67) Just speaking for myself, I'm generally not anti-pregnancy or baby storylines in comics, but this one is making me very uncomfortable for reasons beside Spencer being apparently unable to find any way to fit Betty into his stories without her showing pregnant.
So I'm actually going to take this back way, way to when Betty and Ned first got married, with some explanation of who Ned Leeds is for the uninformed, because, especially with the MCU's Ned Leeds in the mix, he's not exactly the world's most well known Spider-Man character. (I’m sure @ubernegro, who is much more well read on Miles Morales’ canon than I am, has thoughts on how the MCU’s Ned borrowed heavily off the character of Ganke Lee with a 616 Peter Parker character’s name pasted over him.) Ned was initially introduced as Peter's competition for Betty's affections -- Ned was older than both Peter and Betty, a working reporter, and presented as the more "stable" option compared to Peter, who of course Betty vastly preferred before circumstances tore them apart. Ned and Betty married in Amazing Spider-Man #156 and jetsetted off to Europe for Ned's job. This is where the cracks in the marriage began. Betty later reveals that she felt abandoned by Ned in Europe, to the point where she was able to come back to New York without his immediate notice -- as a woman, it's very easy to read their relationship at this point as being one filled with, if not abuse, then emotional neglect. Betty and Peter have a quick extramarital affair at this point -- Peter has just broken up with Mary Jane and Betty claims she and Ned are separating -- that persists until Ned returns and punches Peter over it.

(ASM #193)
Tumblr media
(ASM #229) Betty and Ned reconcile off panel shortly thereafter, but that's pretty far from the end of the story. It's implied that the problems Betty and Ned previously had start to develop again, namely that Betty feels abandoned by Ned, that he is inattentive and, again, as a woman, it's hard not to read it as emotional neglect, if not abuse -- yet. Betty does start another affair at this point, this time with Flash Thompson, and Ned starts acting strangely. It would later be retconned that he was suffering the effects of hypnotism by the Hobgoblin, but like I said, that's a retcon, and what was happening at the time was that Ned was acting erratically in part because he was the villainous Hobgoblin. Ned becomes controlling, threatening, and verbally and physically abusive towards Betty.
Tumblr media
(ASM #284)
Tumblr media
(ASM #283) "I suppose you think it's all right for a wife to cheat on her husband!" "No -- but I won't let you hurt her, either." Leaving aside that Peter also had an affair with Betty, something he's conveniently forgetting in the above panels, I've always really liked this exchange, because the narrative makes it clear through Peter's response to Ned that, whatever the audience may think of Betty for cheating on Ned, it is reprehensible for Ned to publicly humiliate her and/or physically abuse her as a response.
Then Ned Leeds dies in Spider-Man vs Wolverine and he's revealed as the Hobgoblin posthumously shortly thereafter and that remains canon for years and years until it's later retconned out, as comics are wont to do. But that's not really that important for this conversation -- my point being, at one point in Spider-Man canon, it's made fairly clear to the reader that Ned is an abusive husband. He emotionally neglected and abused Betty several times over and physically hurt her at least once on panel, with the clear intent that the reader should realize that he is physically hurting her. So for me as a reader and as a woman, this has always been a really uncomfortable relationship. I have a problem with later Spider-Man comics claiming that it's "not Ned's fault" that he abused Betty because of the retcon that he was hypnotized, and I have a problem with the MCU making Betty and Ned into a cute summer fling in Spider-Man: Far From Home, because I feel like Ned's clear abuse of Betty either gets excused or entirely glossed over. And I don’t think the initial abuse storyline is bad -- I think there’s some amount of value in portraying Betty as a woman who marries too young, who experiences a terrible marriage, and who then spends years recovering from that marriage, which was the case up until they retconned Ned’s abuse of her as a side effect of him being controlled by the real Hobgoblin. What I’m specifically uncomfortable with is the post-retcon attitude that since Ned didn’t really mean to abuse Betty, it’s perfectly fine to portray the relationship in a positive light when even before Ned’s abuse became physical that wasn’t the case. I think that’s ultimately really irresponsible storytelling.  As a reader, I’m not against soap opera style storylines -- someone getting impregnated by a cone of their ex-husband seems pretty par for the course. But there’s so much additional context here that I still haven’t entirely processed how I feel about this Betty storyline, except that what I feel isn’t positive.
So yes, I would agree with you when I say I think there’s quite a lot of deception involved in Betty’s pregnancy storyline -- the Ned clone didn’t tell her he was a clone, even though he had full knowledge of that fact, just as he had full knowledge of how badly the original Ned treated Betty over the course of their relationship -- that renders their sexual encounter and Betty’s pregnancy uncomfortable for me as a reader, to put it mildly. I don’t think it’s out of character for the Ned clone, given that he acts much like the original Ned: he’s selfish and controlling, withholding information from Betty to suit his own needs. The tragedy of Ned and Betty isn’t that Ned died, as more recent Spider-Man stories like to portray it -- including this one, where Betty doesn’t have the knowledge that a) the Ned she reunited with was a clone and not the original and b) that that clone later died. (ASM #816.) The tragedy is that writers continue to force Betty Brant into Ned Leeds storylines instead of letting her as a character grow past him, and that the only way Spencer thought to include her, one of the longest running Spider-Man characters, back in the story was to have her appear starry-eyed over carrying the child of (the clone of) her abusive ex-husband, and the tragedy is that nobody writing more recent Betty and Ned interactions seems to realize that Ned was a villain not because he was briefly the Hobgoblin but because of how he treated Betty.

Just as her character Maria DeLuca was being challenged on Roswell, New Mexico (blame the alien Jones, played by Nathan Dean), Heather Hemmens was as well (blame the weather), stepping behind the camera to direct the September 6 episode, “Goodnight, Elizabeth.”
“It was one of those moments where you’re challenged to do time management beyond the hours in a day, but it was a really, really great experience for me that taught me a lot of skills that now that I’ve done it, I can take forward and conquer with,” Hemmens tells TV Insider of the experience.
“[It] came about from hours and hours and hours of shadowing behind the scenes, directing short films, so this was years of preparation meeting opportunity for me,” she continues. “It really was a great time to grow within the show especially behind the camera. So I’m really excited to do that on my home court.”
Heading into the episode, Maria remains in a coma after her encounter with Jones (not Max, also played by Dean, as they’d all thought). But at least everyone knows who they’re really dealing with now… right? That doesn’t mean it’ll be easy to stop him.
Below, Hemmens talks directing — she’ll helm another episode later in Season 4 — before previewing the rest of the season and Maria’s slightly reckless behavior.
Where does this episode find Maria in her fight against Jones?
Heather Hemmens: We find them very well matched where she has unexpectedly met him in the mindscape, but she is holding onto her powers for dear life. Right now she’s just buying time until she can outsmart him. They’re very well-matched because Maria’s strong-minded and determined and she’s just as good as Jones as evil, so it’s going to be an epic battle between them.
What’s everyone else up to now that they know they haven’t been talking to Max, but to Jones?
Heather Hemmens:  Everyone is frantically searching around for the real Jones and trying to stop him from whatever he’s set out to do. It’s a really fun storyline where the Scooby-Doo gang is setting up traps and different schemes to try and get ahead of Jones’ agenda. At the same time, they’re trying to receive psychic messages from Maria, helping them figure out what his motives are and also to help them get her out of this coma. This all is going to culminate with showdowns and explosions and big reveals that people who have been watching the show for years will never see coming. And it’s just going to be jaw-dropping turns that will take us into the rest of the storyline for the season.
There is quite a bit going on in this episode – the Jones storyline, Alex [Tyler Blackburn] is trying to get answers, Rosa’s [Amber Midthunder] still figuring things out about herself. What were your favorite and the most challenging scenes to direct?
My favorite scenes were Rosa and Isobel [Lily Cowles] in the cave where they have a real sisterhood bonding moment. That was such a joy just to have a scene where it wasn’t about special effects or anything sinister. It was just about two women connecting and having this great dialogue. It was really just such a joy to work with both of those actors, who are my close friends, and we had a lot of fun with that.
One of the more challenging scenes is this showdown. There’s so much going on. There’s a bunch of characters in the scene. There are explosions, special effects, all kinds of things happening, and it felt like a major movie set. It was really, really fun to film and we got rain right in the middle of it. We ended up being more crunched for time than I was supposed to have, and I was just really happy that I had prepared for that day in a way that I was able to still finish one of the most important scenes of the episode without having to sacrifice.
The scenes that I was in as an actor had special effects in them. And I also had to make time to watch playback and spend an hour and a half in hair and makeup before I got into director mode. So those were also challenges that I was happy to explore, that new skill set for myself, and just try to enjoy it along the way.
Speaking of great scenes with two women this season, one of my favorite relationships right now is Maria and Isobel’s. Are we going to continue to see more of those two together?
Heather Hemmens:  Absolutely. These two strong women are realizing that they’re even stronger together. They have such a fun dynamic. They have witty banter and they have great ideas and they also still have that competitiveness that makes them really fun to watch. I’m happy for the storyline and for the characters that the catty nature of their relationship has been overcome and now we’re into seeing two empowered women support each other. I just think that’s a really beautiful dynamic, and we’re going to see a lot more of it throughout the season.
It seems like Gregory [Tanner Novlan] has adapted pretty well to everything going on in Roswell. What can you say about his and Maria’s relationship?
Heather Hemmens:  I think the reason that Maria loves hanging out with Gregory is that he’s so easygoing. He has taken everything in stride. He’s been a support system. He’s been a really warm presence and just a good friend throughout all of this and Maria really needed a rock. He’s very stable. So I think that is the initial attraction and it could be budding into something romantic. I think it’s at a good starting point in friendship to be able to grow into that. … He may be crushing a little bit harder than her at the moment. But I think when he’s showing his true colors that he really cares for her and he has her back when she’s not well, that could go over pretty good with Maria when she catches wind of it.
We saw how far Maria was willing to go to trigger another vision earlier in the season, and she’s in a coma right now because she couldn’t sit and not do anything. Will we continue to see her push herself to or beyond her limits?
Heather Hemmens:  Absolutely. Maria is now on her own journey with her alien powers and with this alien storyline, whereas in the past seasons, we’ve seen her really supporting the other characters’ experience of this. Now she is on a rampage to fulfill her own destiny and discover what that is for her powers, so she’s willing to go pretty far to figure it out. I think she feels that no matter what the danger brings, she can’t not know.
I love Maria and everything she’s doing this season, but at the same time, I’m like, where’s your sense of self-preservation?
Heather Hemmens:  Yeah, she’s gotten a little bit reckless because she’s in dire need of answers. I think sometimes the hardest thing in life is not knowing and that can outweigh the expense of any maybe physical harm that she can endure and survive. But the most important thing to her is just having those questions answered that constantly plague her mind.
Everything’s building up to this funeral with the Valenti crest on the coffin. What can you tease about that funeral and what we’re going to see going forward?
Heather Hemmens:  It’s one of those mysteries that everybody comes together as a group because not only do they all care about who could be in the coffin, but it could be them. They still have no clarity that any of them is safe, and so in order to protect themselves, they also have to protect each other. That’s just one of the more lovely storylines that bonds them all, this group effort to keep everybody safe.
How certain can we be of anything that we’ve seen in those visions?
Heather Hemmens:  I’d say that they present accurately, but hindsight is 20/20. So just because they’re presenting accurately doesn’t mean that the supporting evidence doesn’t change the dynamic.
What else can you preview about the rest of the season and how it’s going to set up next season?
Heather Hemmens:  This Jones character is very determined to wreak havoc, so he’s not going away, and they’re going to have to battle it out with him for the next chapter of this story. They find different ways to do that and each character comes in to fight that beast. That’s a really, really fun storyline that plays out. And we’re gonna dig a little bit more into Maria’s family history as well and how it connects to everyone else and how it gets specific with this day in time that Jones is trying to find a memory for. Maria has a very big role in whether or not he gets that that piece of information he’s searching for.

Also fun fact, when I write I usually find a song that overall gives me the vibes for the story, and the song that helped me write these two chapters is Sextape by Deftones :) Give it a listen-

Jungkook watched as the figure turned back around and ran across the other room and into the room on top that he knew gave stairs to the building. He was stuck. Now here bleeding out only to be given to police. This is it.
You stared at the screen in disbelief. There was no way this was how your brother was going to end this chapter. No fuckin way. You looked around in confusion before your eyes fell on the pencil in its holder. You wondered if you should erase it. Then when your brother hopefully comes back, you can tell him that the police accidentally wiped it and then later on convince him to have a different ending. Yeah...That would work. You grabbed the pencil, the thick handle sitting comfortably between your fingers. You hit the eraser icon and as soon as the pencil tip hit the screen, you felt warmth.
Almost like you were sucked into a hot room. A sauna, but without the humidity. It was bright for only a second, and then it was dark. You blinked slowly, your head pulsing. "Ow..what the fuck..." You groaned as you rubbed your temples. Your hands started to lift you from the ground, and you paused as you felt the feeling of concrete and small pieces of rocks. You looked up, the wind blowing your hair as you looked around. You slowly stood up, your eyebrows furrowed and eyes squinting from the lingering headache. You froze.
The city. How? You...You were just in your brother's room. At your parent's house. In the countryside. Did you never leave your studio apartment? But why were you on the roof? Was this whole time of visiting family only a dream? You looked around in disbelief before hearing a faint moan. You whipped your head around and saw someone laying on the ground, a pool of red under them.
"Are-Are you okay?" You asked, quickly running to them. You knelt down next to them, looking at their wounds. I-It's okay! I'm a nurse. I can help you..." You trailed off as soon as you saw his face. Jungkook. "Jungkook-" You slapped your hand over your mouth as soon as you said his name. He looked up at you, his face a twisted mix of pain and confusion. "Do I know you?" He choked out. "N-No. Um...what happened?" You asked. He scoffed. "You're a nurse. You should know..." He trailed off. He was going in and out of consciousness.
"Fuck, um...I'mma call 911." You said, reaching into your pocket and grabbing your phone. You paused when you saw you had no connection. "D-Don't call the police." Jungkook came back from consciousness, his eyes wide. "I need to get an ambulance for you, you're bleeding out." You looked at him up and down, his blood slowly pooling out as he lost more and more blood. "Please...no." He whispered. You looked around, hoping to see someone but there was none. "So do you just want to die out here?" You asked.
You didn't mean to sound mean, but he was being ridiculous at this point. "No...just...you're a nurse, can you take me to your place? I'll like...pay you or whatever to help me just please don't." He was pleaded but it all sounded like a stupid idea to you. Plus, did you even live here?
"You're fucking stupid, no! You've been shot, I have no idea what arteries might've been hit in that leg-" You panicked and Jungkook closed his eyes. He was really about to die out here. With a stupid, useless nurse. Which made it even worse.
"Fine. Whatever. I'll just die." Jungkook said. You gaped at him. "No fuckin way, come on, I'll take you to the hospital myself. Is there an urgent care near?" You asked. "You don't know? You found me." He winced as you grabbed his arm, putting it around your shoulders and slowly helped him up. "I'm um...not from around here." You murmured. Jungkook looked at you, his eyes scanning your face as you chewed at your bottom lip. "How annoying..." He grumbled. You contemplated dropping him back down and letting him bleed out, but then you realized that you'd have this man's life on your mind forever, and you don't want to deal with that trauma.
You two slowly but surely went to the open stairs of the building, making your way down. "Can we use an elevator? You're heavy..." You complained. He was practically dead weight against you, and as strong as you might think you are, a dead weight body is incredible heavy. "No fuckin way. The cops will find me that way." Jungkook was very stubborn, and he was starting to piss you off. "Fine. Then put more work in. You're fat and I can't carry you down all these stairs."
Jungkook rolled his eyes but started to carefully take some of his weight off of you, not wanting to do too much because he was still weak from losing so much blood. Eventually you two make it out the building from the side door, and stumble a couple blocks to a nearby urgent care. You sighed in relief when they took Jungkook into a stretcher and started taking care of his actively bleeding wounds as he was wheeled off. You sat in one of the chairs in the waiting room, your right side stained with his blood.
"Are you his family?" A nurse asked as she stood in front of you. You looked up at her wide eyed "Uh, oh, no. No, I'm just a nurse. I happened to find him and took him here." You combed your hair back, your bangs sticking to your forehead with sweat. "Oh? Where do you work?" Your mouth opened and closed before opening once more, thinking of how to even respond. "Um...is there a bathroom I can wash up in?" You stood, the nurse stepping back with a confused expression before nodding and pointing you in the direction of the bathroom.
You hurried into the large bathroom, locking the door behind you. You sighed, looking yourself in the mirror and gripping the sink hard, your knuckles almost turning white. "What in the ever loving fuck is going on?" You hoped your reflection would reply. Tell you this is all a dream. This is a dream. Yeah, it's a dream.
You washed your face, hands, and legs, already giving up trying to clean the blood from your pajamas when it seemed to just spread and make your skin wet and sticky. "Fuckin hell..." You sighed before leaving the bathroom and sitting back at the waiting area, away from any nurses who may walk past to avoid any further questions.
-
You felt like you were there for hours. You were there for hours. The sound of people crying and alerts over the intercom helped drown out the sound of your own thoughts. Your mind could beat Usain Bolt right now with how hard it was racing. You just sat quietly, cross legged at the ankles. You should leave. You kept telling yourself that, but at the same time you wanted to stay. See if he was okay. Maybe it's because you kinda pretended as if you were waiting for your brother. Hopefully not in these circumstances but to hope he was okay, might bring you some clarity. "Excuse me..." A doctor said as she walked over to you.
You silently hoped there would be no more questions. "Are you with Jeon Jungkook?" She asked. You slowly nodded. "He's fine, in stable condition. Luckily the bullets missed all the important organs and arteries. The bullet in his leg shattered and we had to take those out so please come back if there's any complications after discharge. But luckily the bullet in his abdomen went straight through with no massive damage so that was an easy fix."
She explained everything to you and you sighed in relief. This means you can leave. Finally. "He is ready to see you now." The doctor interrupted your thoughts. "Ex-Excuse me?" You couldn't stop your constant stuttering. "He has requested to see you." You opened your mouth but no words left you, so you simply nodded and followed the doctor through a set or doors towards the patient rooms.
"He's in here. Our visiting hours are over in an hour." She said, nodding to you before walking off. You looked back at her as she left, then turned towards the sliding door of the patient room. Your hand reached out to grab the handle, your fingers wiggling slightly with nervousness. "Annoying Nurse? I know you're there." You could hear Jungkook's deep voice from the other side of the door and you huffed, sliding the door open and going inside quickly. "Annoying nurse? I have a name you know."
"Never told me it, so that's your fault." Jungkook looked at you from his bed, his hospital gown slightly open showing a wrap around his abdomen. You then glanced at the cast on his leg, and the stack of pillows keeping it elevated. "My name is (Y/N), so you can stop calling me annoying. Please." You sighed, taking a seat next to his bed. "Fine. But only because you said please." He smirked. You rolled your eyes. "I just wanted to say thank you. For saving my life." You looked Jungkook in the eye, his eyes on his hands which were picking at his individual fingers.
"No need to thank me. It's my job." You gave him a soft smile. He looked over at you, and matched his smile with yours. "You work here?" You bit your bottom lip. "No...I uh...I work somewhere else. Out of town." You said it so quietly Jungkook almost couldn't hear you. "Oh...okay."
The silence was so uncomfortable you debated just getting up and leaving now, which you thought would be perfect. "Well, visiting hours are probably already over, so I will get going now." You laughed awkwardly, standing up slowly and wiping your sweaty palms agains your pajama shorts. You turned to walk out the door but then a hand reached out and grabbed yours.
You turned back around and saw Jungkook's bandaged hand engulfing your smaller palm. "Can you come back tomorrow?" He almost had puppy dog eyes with the way he looked up at you. "I...I don't know..." You started. "I'll pay for lunch...or dinner. Or whatever you want. Please?" You thought to yourself. "Hmm...fine, but only because you said please." You teased, and Jungkook snorted. He gave you a toothy grin and you felt your cheeks heat up slightly with his hand still wrapped around yours.
"Goodnight Jungkook." You pulled your hand from his grasp and slide open the door to his room. "Goodnight...Y/N" He said as you closed his door. He looked around the hospital room and sighed. "Such an annoying nurse." He chuckled.
-
Now that you were finally out of there, you could properly freak the fuck out. First off, where the fuck are you? Second, why in the fuck is Framed character, Jeon Jungkook, in the same world as you right now? Third, what in the fucking fuck? Fuck? You raked your hands through your messy hair, the reality of everything setting in. What if you're stuck here? What about your family? Your friends? Your job???
You rubbed at your temples. Okay (Y/N), don't stress yourself out too much now. Maybe if you just...go to sleep...you'll wake up back at home. It's a dream remember? You looked around. Where the fuck will you go? You contemplated everything and just realized you should probably just stay at the hospital. You had nowhere to go.
As you made your way back to the entrance doors, three cop cars pulled up and cops started to jump out their cars. You jumped back in surprise. "Are you alright?" One of the officers said, looking at your blood stained clothes. "Y-Yeah I'm fine, I was dropping off a friend." You stammered. The officer looked you up and down curiously. "Well anyways, have you seen this man? He is currently wanted by police." The officer scrolled on his phone before showing you a photo and you almost choked on your spit. A picture of Jungkook was staring right back at you, his purple dyed hair a mess. It's a mugshot.
"Uh...no. Why? What did he do?" You looked at the officer, trying to hold your composure. Why in the hell was there a mugshot of Jungkook? Is that why he wouldn't let you call the police? "We can't say that. Just wondering if you'd seen him." The officer asked once again, as if telling you to just own up to it.
Like hell you were going to do that. You got questions and this little criminal needed to give you answers. "Nope. Never seen him. If you'll please excuse me, my boyfriend was shot and I'm here to make sure he's okay." Your mouth was moving faster than your brain. Boyfriend? Why in the fuck did you say that? The officer's right eyebrow raised curiously. "Did you shoot him?" You cocked your head in confusion before remembering your current attire.
"N-No! I saved his life. Now...please excuse me." You pushed past the officer as you made your way back into the hospital and into the elevators to go to the patient rooms. Once you arrived on the correct floor you snuck past the nurses station, knowing if they saw you they'd tell you to go home since visiting hours were over. Once you got to Jungkook's room, you quietly slide open the door and closed it once you were inside.
"You're back?" Jungkook's voice could've startled you if you weren't already freaking the fuck out. "Jungkook...I just got stopped by the cops." You looked over at him and you visibly saw his adam's apple bob from the gulp he swallowed. "Yeah? And?" This fucker is playing dumb. "And? Jungkook you're wanted by the police! What did you do?" You exclaimed. "Okay, say it louder for the security down the hall." He rolled his eyes, his arms folded across his chest as he huffed, annoyed.
"I didn't do anything." Your eyes could've popped out your head with how hard your eyes were bulging at him. "The police seem to think differently. They showed me your fuckin mugshot, dude." You sat next to his bed, your hands raking your hair with frustration. "That was from something unrelated. This time...it wasn't me." He looked like he really wanted you to believe him. "What happened?" You just wanted to know. You weren't sure if you were sitting with an innocent man or some kind of killer but it would help to make sure?
Jungkook paused, his eyes dashing around as if he was thinking if he should even tell me or not. "Fine...don't tell me." You were starting to get annoyed. You were hoping he would trust you, with you saving his life and all, but that didn't seem to be the case. "(Y/N)..." He started but you were quick to shut him down. "Forget it. Good luck with your case." You slide open the door, your face turned pale when you saw a nurse walking with a police officer.
You slide the door shut once more, and Jungkook looked at you curiously. "Jungkook...the police are here." You whispered. You felt the room go cold and Jungkook looked around nervously. "We gotta go." He started moving, ripping his IV out his arm swinging his leg over the bed with a groan. "Wait what? What the fuck? N-No!" You walked over to him, trying to push him back by his chest. He pushed your hands away.
"I'm not about to be taken for something I did not do." He was angry. Frustrated. You hesistated, watching as he stood and grabbed his bag of clothes. "I'll...I'll help you." Jungkook turned towards you. "You will? Even though you don't know if I'm some crazed killer or not?" You pursed your lips. "Is that what they're trying to arrest you for?" Jungkook took a deep breath in, not saying anything else as he limped towards his things that were put into a hospital bag and then slipped on his hospital slippers.
He turned towards you again, looking you over once more as you stood there. "Are you just gonna stare at me or are you gonna come with me?" You nodded, going over to him and letting him wrap his arm around your shoulder once more. You slid open the door, looking in the direction of where the nurse and officer were and not seeing them. "They might be talking about you, we gotta go." You whispered and Jungkook nodded, following you towards the nearby stairs.
"Wait, can we use the elevator?" Jungkook looked at you as if you were the dumbest on earth. "You truly are the most annoying person I've ever met." He let go of your shoulder. "You go on the elevator, distract the nurse and cop, and meet me on the side of the building. I'll call someone to pick us up since you apparently don't live around here." He rolled his eyes and opened up the door to the stairs, wincing slightly in pain.
You nodded, ignoring his earlier remark and started for the elevator. Right as you were close, the nurse and cop you saw earlier spotted you. "Excuse me? Visiting hours ended a while ago." She said. You looked at her apologetically. "Sorry...my boyfriend was shot and I just needed to see him one more time. Bring him some snacks and stuff." You continued heading for the elevator, ignoring the calls from the nurse and officer as you pressed the first floor button and mashed the 'closed elevator' button repetitively.
Once you got to the first floor, you walked calmly out the door, ignoring the looks from the earlier officer that questioned you earlier. As soon as you touched the outside, a large exhale escaped your lungs. How long were you holding your breath? As you walked, you heard a low voice call out to you. "(Y/N)." Jungkook called for you in a silent yell. You hurried over to him, grabbing his arm once again to help him balance himself.
"Where is your friend?" You looked up at him. "Behind here." He started walking and you tried your best to help him along the way, the weight of his body was a little easier to handle now. He wasn't extremely heavy, but the amount of muscle on him did add to his weight and made it a little hard to keep hold of him.
As you kept walking you noticed a car parked with its lights off. You opened the door and Jungkook slowly sat into the back seat, wincing and groaned the whole time. You tried to look at the driver but couldn't. What if this is just his plan to kidnap you? You know what he's on the run for, getting rid of you will just make things easier.
"Come on." Jungkook grabbed your arm, pulling you into the car with him. You sat, a little reluctant but deciding it's for the best. You could have somewhere to sleep, if Jungkook doesn't kill you first. Once you were inside, you could now see who was driving. Kim Seokjin. Jungkook's other best friend in this story.
"Jesus Christ dude, who did that to you?" He looked back at Jungkook, his eyes then shifting to you. "Is this a new one?" That question almost seemed like an insult. New one? You don't remember Jungkook being a player in the story? How many relationships has he been in?
"Shut up and drive, dude. I'm sure the cops just realized I'm gone." Jungkook looked around, almost paranoid. "Okay fine." Seokjin started driving, waiting till he was on the road before turning his headlights on. He then turned on the radio, pop punk softly playing. Jungkook was exhausted. Terribly exhausted, and he couldn't help but rest his head on your shoulder. You stiffened at first, but then understood immediately and relaxed.
You smell good. He thought to himself as he took a slow deep breath, taking in your scent. Even though you smelled slightly of his blood, there was this other natural scent from you. Your hair smelled clean. Like you just washed it before finding him bleeding out on the roof. He appreciated this. It helps him relax.
The drive was long, but it helped ease the worry between Jungkook's brow, and he was relieved when you all arrived at Seokjin's brother's house. "My brother is away on a business trip for a month, so this place is yours until you figure things out." Seokjin explained everything to you two as he helped Jungkook get out the car. Jungkook gritted his teeth in pain. He looked over to you, seeing your tired expression. "Is it okay if we use his clothes?"
"Yeah dude, no problem. Just make sure you wash everything before you leave." Seokjin opened the door for you, letting you in first before helping Jungkook. "There's two bedrooms, so there's another place to sleep." You glanced around the place. This was a very nice house. One you didn't mind staying in for as long as Jungkook wanted.
What was that? You were thinking as if you were gonna be here another night. This is just a very long, draining dream. After tonight, you will wake up in your bed or on the floor of your brother's room and wonder what happened. "Thank you, Hyung." Jungkook watched you as you walked around. "Oh, so now we're using formalities?" Seokjin joked, walking Jungkook into one of the rooms and setting him on the bed.
"Alright, I'll leave you two be. Reminder, this is only for a month, so don't get too comfortable. And also, please clean up after yourself. Also please throw all your condoms away in the outside trash or flush them, if ya'll use those. I don't want my brother asking too many questions." Seokjin looked at the both of you and you looked back at him wide eyed, your face as hot as an oven.
"Hyung. Stop. We're just friends." Jungkook looked almost as flustered as you, his eyes quickly averting yours. "Really? Just friends with someone this hot? Then you don't mind if I flirt with them right?" Seokjin flashed you a wide grin and you bit your lip nervously. Seokjin is a very...very handsome man yet you couldn't imagine doing anything with him. Jungkook glanced between the two of you and something rose within him. Jealousy? No fuckin way. Either way it pissed him off seeing his friend look at you like that.
"Jin..." Seokjin chuckled, shaking his head. "And the formalities are gone again." He headed out the room and down the hall. "Alright kids, I'll leave you two alone." You both waited in silence, waiting for the sound of the front door to close and lock before both exhaling.
"Holy shit...um...well. This is nice I guess." You were trying to find anything to get your mind off whatever just happened and you could see Jungkook either was trying to do the same or honestly didn't care because he just slowly laid down onto the bed. "I'm going to sleep. It's been a long night." He grumbled and you nodded, the awkward silence engulfing the room once again. "Gotcha...I'll just...go into the other room." You headed towards the door before hearing the bed creak slightly.
"Goodnight." Jungkook stared at you as you walked out the door and slowly closed it behind you. "Night, Jungkook." You said before shutting it. Once you were out the room, you felt all the stiffness and uneasiness leave you. Holy fuck, you need a shower. You smelled of blood and sweat and it was utterly disgusting. You went straight into the bathroom and started the shower, shedding your clothes off and hopping in as soon as the water was scolding hot. You let the water drop onto your naked body, the water slowly washing the dried blood off of you and trailing into the drain. You grabbed the soap on the side and started scrubbing, almost as if you were trying to scrub five layers of skin off.
After your shower and you felt like you were fresh and raw from the hot water and hard scrubbing, you wrapped yourself in a fluffy towel and made your way into the other bedroom. Once you were inside you opened a dresser and saw a couple large shirts. You were thankful they were huge cause you didn't have any spare underwear to wear.
You pulled it over your head, the soft material falling over your body and resting at your mid thigh. You put the towel to your hair and dried your hair as much as possible, your arms felt so tired that just lifting them to dry your hair was a lot of work. You put the towel on the ground and made your way over to the bed and went under the sheets. This was what you finally needed. A comfortable bed. And now, as you fall asleep, you can look forward to waking up back home.

‘Roswell, New Mexico’: Heather Hemmens on Directing, Why Maria & Jones Are ‘Very Well Matched’
Everyone is frantically searching around for the real Jones and trying to stop him from whatever he’s set out to do.
Absolutely.
I think the reason that Maria loves hanging out with Gregory is that he’s so easygoing.
Absolutely.
Yeah, she’s gotten a little bit reckless because she’s in dire need of answers.
It’s one of those mysteries that everybody comes together as a group because not only do they all care about who could be in the coffin, but it could be them. They still have no clarity that any of them is safe, and so in order to protect themselves, they also have to protect each other. That’s just one of the more lovely storylines that bonds them all, this group effort to keep everybody safe.
How certain can we be of anything that we’ve seen in those visions?
I’d say that they present accurately, but hindsight is 20/20. So just because they’re presenting accurately doesn’t mean that the supporting evidence doesn’t change the dynamic.
What else can you preview about the rest of the season and how it’s going to set up next season?
This Jones character is very determined to wreak havoc, so he’s not going away, and they’re going to have to battle it out with him for the next chapter of this story.

Hard to Love [2/?]
Tumblr media
Pairings: Chris Evans x Reader
Words: 1504
Warnings: this story will have mentions of abuse, mental and physical so please read at your own risk. Some swearing, angst, and a good amount of fluff. Maybe some smut if I’m feeling frisky.
Summary: After moving to a new town all on her own, Reader would do anything for a stable job and income. Even if that means housekeeping for one of Boston’s eligible bachelors. What she didn’t expect was finding herself falling in love with him and him finding out about the past that she was running from.
A/N: Here’s chapter two! Tags are still open!
Tumblr media
For the second day in a row I found myself sitting in my car, trying to gather courage to walk into the house in front of me. Today was my first day cleaning Chris Evan’s house and it would be an understatement to say that I was nervous.
I was shitting my pants.
Taking a few deep breaths, I read over the text message for the third time.
Hey Y/N, it’s Chris. I just wanted to let you know that I’ll be on a video call when you arrive so let yourself in through the side door. There’s a list on the kitchen counter for you. Please make yourself comfortable and I’ll be done with my call around noon so we can talk then. Thanks again!
Oh, Dodger will also greet you at the door. Don’t worry, he’s the biggest sweetheart. He’ll smother you in kisses.
Last night once I got back to my apartment, Laura emailed over the NDA and after reading it over, I realized that this job was really important. Some would just say I’m his maid but in reality, I was going to be helping Chris out with a lot of things.
Laura was his assistant for business and it seemed like I was his assistant for his personal life.
I took a quick last glance in my mirror, fixing my hair and make up before taking a deep breath and started walking up the long driveway. My hands shook as I opened the door but all the nerves vanished when I was met at the threshold by 50lbs of fluff.
“Well hello there. You must be Dodger,” I cooed while giving him an endless amount of love.
I giggled as Dodger wiggled his butt while I walked inside, the nerves taking over again. As I entered the kitchen, the figure sitting at the table looked over his shoulder and seeing that warm smile melted my heart and immediately put me at ease.
“Good morning,” he mouthed with a wave.
I smiled and returned the waved, motioning that I would get started upstairs.
Chris nodded, agreeing.
The list he had left told me everything he wanted done today.
Clean his bedroom and bathroom.
Vacuum his guest rooms.
Clean his entire main floor.
It was a shortlist but I knew that it would take me all day; not that I was complaining.
Tumblr media
I had saved Chris’ bedroom for last, not finding the courage to step foot inside. It almost seemed illegal, that I shouldn’t be allowed in there. It was stupid for me to feel like that, Chris even said to make myself comfortable.
His room was the size of my entire apartment. I gawked at the size of it as I took it all in. His king sized bed was placed in the middle of the room, still unmade, and the rest of the furniture matched his bed. The many windows and doors allowed the sun to cast inside, warming the room in a soft glow.
Dodger had followed me into every room, clearly wondering what I was doing.
“You’re very curious aren't you?” I smiled.
After I had cleaned the bathroom, jealous that he had that tub that could easily fit three people, I started to clean his room. As I was making his bed, I felt a presence behind me.
“Sorry, I had every intention of making my bed this morning but I slept in way too late and almost missed my call.”
Looking up in the doorway, I gave Chris a warm smile.
“It’s alright. I don’t mind.”
“Are you finding everything alright?” He questioned while leaning against the doorway.
“Yeah, thank you.”
He nodded. “Of course. I’m going to head out for a run, I'll be back in a bit..”
After giving him a small goodbye, I was left alone with my thoughts; thoughts of Chris shirtless and sweaty. Except he wasn't running, he was on top of me in this bed.
“Oh god,” I muttered. “This is not going to be easy.”
Tumblr media
After a couple hours I had finally finished upstairs and as I walked into the kitchen, I found my heart warming for the second time today.
Chris was making some lunch and had an extra plate set out. As he heard me walk in, he looked up then motioned towards the stool next to him.
“I thought you could take a lunch break.” He mentioned.
I hadn’t even thought about bringing something to eat so I was thankful that Chris had done that.
“Thank you,” I said while sitting down.
“So, why don’t you tell me a little about yourself. I figured we could get to know each other since we’ll be seeing each other a lot.” Chris placed the sandwich in front of me before sitting down next to me.
“There’s not a lot to know. I moved here a few months ago for a fresh start.” I said.
He could tell by the tone of my voice that I didn’t want to go into more details about why I needed a fresh start so he moved on.
“Any pets?” He asked.
I shook my head. “Just me.”
There was an unknown look in Chris’ eye at my answer, something that I couldn’t figure out.
We both chatted for a few more minutes, just enjoying each other's company. Our personal bubble had burst when his phone started to ring. He excused himself, stepping into the other room, while I busied myself with cleaning up our lunch.
I wasn’t sure exactly how long he was on the phone for but from the way his shoulders tensed and the muscles in his backs contracted, I knew that it wasn’t a phone call he wanted to have.
“Y/N?”
I stopped scrubbing the stove and looked over to Chris, another unreadable look on his face. Worry etched my bones, wondering if something had shown up on my background check.
“Everything alright?” I asked.
He nodded. “Yeah. That was my agent, I have to go shoot for a few weeks.”
“Oh,” I said, “That’s good, right?”
He nodded again. “Yeah definitely. I just want to make sure you’re alright with being here by yourself. And if you’re comfortable with coming every day to check on Dodger?”
I smiled. “Of course.”
“I’ll obviously pay you extra for it. My mom or brother usually watch him but they’re both out of town.” He rambled on.
“Chris, it’s fine. I don’t mind.” I reassured him.
“Thank you, Y/N.” He smiled before excusing himself.
Hours passed as I kept busy cleaning the rest of the house while Chris busied himself with packing his suitcases. There was a sadness about him leaving. I just started working for him and I liked the idea of having him around, even though we had just met yesterday. But I knew that with who he was that he would be in and out a lot.
The clock had struck six, loud chimes from the grandfather clock in the front entryway echoing throughout the large home.
I smiled at Dodger, who had walked me to the mudroom where my things had been kept. “Well bud, on to job number two. I’ll see you tomorrow though.”
As I was about to walk out, Chris had come out of nowhere, causing me to jump.
“Jesus Christ!” I yelled while clutching my chest.
“I am so sorry,” he laughed. “I’m usually a lot louder on my feet.”
I shook my head, laughing along with him. “No, it’s okay. I’m very jumpy, that’s all.”
“I’ll remember that,” he laughed again. “All finished?”
“Yeah, I hope you’re happy with everything.” I said.
“It already smells a lot better than it used too,” Chris joked.
He dug into his pockets before placing a small silver key into my hand. I noticed his hand was a lot softer than yesterday, immediately warming my body with his soft touch.
“I thought it would be easier for you to have your own key,” he noted.
“Thank you,” I nodded.
We both stood there in his mudroom, a few spaces away from each other, staring into each other’s eyes. His hazel eyes piercing into my soul and causing my insides to melt. I watched as his tongue slowly glided over his lips and I bit my own, trying to stop the burn I felt in between my legs.
The sudden sexual tension was noticeable between us, encasing us in a small bubble. The bubble popped when my phone dinged, a reminder that I had to be at my second job in less than an hour.
Forcing myself away from his gaze, I mentioned to my phone. “I should get going, I don't want to be late for job number two.”
Chris’ lips turned down in a frown. “Long day?”
I shrugged. “It’s fine. My other job really isn’t that hard.”
Without going into more detail about it, I gave him a small wave goodbye and walked out the door, letting it shut behind me.

It Happened One Night: Chapter 2
The country house Mycroft had introduced them to was a little smaller than the nobles’ mansions they’d been to thus far, but it was an elegant villa, one which exuded a sense of history.
Its exterior was built in the Gothic style, with stone foundations. Planted in the vast gardens was a sea of flora in exquisite colour schemes, delighting the eye of any onlooker. [1]
Of course, the interior didn’t disappoint either: it was richly decorated, with intricately crafted furniture in every room; and hanging from the walls were portraits of the mansion’s owners, as well as landscapes painted by renowned artists. As Sherlock and company were here as guests, they were restricted in the number of rooms allowed for use, but the sheer number of luxury items that greeted them was still far greater than what any ordinary person could ever hope to obtain.
Their lives had literally been turned around.
Turned around…… and yet.
“——Booored……”
In the room he had picked himself, Sherlock looked out the window, gazing at the tranquil garden flooded with gentle sunlight.
It had been three days since they’d moved in, and Sherlock had already grown weary of this lavish lifestyle.
He only took care of the plants in the garden insomuch that they wouldn’t wither, but otherwise he had no interest in the flowers themselves. Moreover, he had already tired of gazing upon the decorations and furniture and paintings in the house. The underground wine cellar aroused some interest, but as an invited guest, helping himself to the liquor as he pleased was evidently a breach of etiquette.
In the end, there wasn’t much to do in this mansion.
As John had suggested, requests from clients were reaching him by mail in the meantime, but they had all been simple cases, solvable just by reading the letters. Couldn’t one difficult case come in sometime? Sherlock sighed heavily as he wrote down the solutions in his replies.
His boredom was plain as day. John, who was seated across him, spoke up in a soft voice.
“Sherlock. We just got tangled up in a big incident a while back, so isn’t it a good thing to take a break for once?”
“Y’know, John, just one day of rest is enough for me. If I don’t get the right level of stimulation, my brain will get all mouldy.”
“What an absurd……”
Just then, the door opened.
“Sherlock, John-kun, I’ve made some tea.”
Miss Hudson walked in bearing a silver tray. On top of it were some nicely baked biscuits, and black tea in teacups with simple designs. As they’d been given permission to use the kitchens, she had been devoting her spare time to baking.
“Thank you, Miss Hudson.”
“Thanks—”
The two of them each took a biscuit from the tray on the table, and munched on it.
“How is it? I’m quite proud of them myself,” she asked.
John nodded in satisfaction.
“It’s very delicious. Right, Sherlock?”
“Oh, it’s good, yeah,” he replied, deadpan.
Miss Hudson shook her head sadly.
“……Well now. If you’re this bored, why don’t you head down to one of the nearby villages? Seeing as there’s such fine weather too.”
Sherlock sent his gaze out the window yet again.
“That’s true……. And if an interesting case pops up, it would be just my luck.”
“Don’t say something so troubling — we’ve worked hard for this peace and quiet.”
John was familiar with Sherlock’s character, but this level of addiction to his work was nothing short of astounding. Miss Hudson, clearly worried by the detective’s words, placed a hand on John’s shoulder.
“John-kun, with Sherlock in this state, I’m worried he’ll get up to no good. Just in case, could you tag along with him?”
“Certainly; leave it to me. It’ll also be a perfect opportunity to get some exercise.”
“What’re you both taking me for……?” Sherlock grumbled — he’d been half-joking, and was surprised to find his words being taken seriously.
Then, with Miss Hudson taking care of the house, the two men set off.
✦ ✦ ✦ ✦
The Cotswolds was a region 200 kilometres west of London, renowned for its rustic charm, with its rolling hills carpeted in verdant grass.
From where they were, they could see flocks of white sheep and tiny villages dotting the vast green landscape. The village buildings were constructed from limestone: in the northeast of the Cotswolds, it was the colour of honey; in the central region, it was golden-yellow; in the southwest, it turned white instead.
Walking along a path which cut through some pastures, Sherlock and John arrived at the village nearest to the mansion.
A small stream meandered through the village, and built along it was a series of stone houses. It looked right out of a picture book.
Their hearts healed by the idyllic scene before them, the two men headed to the centre of the village, in a bid to find some boredom-busting information. There, they found a two-storey inn. When he noticed that a section of the first floor had been converted into a pub, Sherlock broke into a grin.
“Oi, John. Let’s have a pint to pass the time.”
John shot him a dubious look.
“Sherlock. Drinking during the day isn’t something I approve of.”
“It’ll be fine. It’s been a long time since we’ve had a vacation anyway — why not let loose for a bit?”
“And who was it who said he’d had enough of resting just now……?”
This was a fine example of what it meant to do an about-turn.
But it wasn’t the first time Sherlock had done something on a whim. John reluctantly followed him into the inn.
As expected for a country pub in the daytime, there were only a handful of customers seated quietly inside — it was nothing like the bustle of the city. At the counter was a tall man, who looked like he was running the business alone.
The two men sat at the bar. Sherlock ordered beer, while John chose some light snacks. As their orders were served up, Sherlock took a swig, then directed a question to the owner.
“Hey. Isn’t there anything interesting going on around here?”
At this vague question, the pub owner rubbed his chin.
“Anything interesting, huh. Well there is, but it’s a family matter. Are you two tourists?”
John spoke up. “No, it’s complicated…… For various reasons, we’re staying in the residence of a nearby landowner for the time being.”
“Hmm, so you’re a close friend of this noble?”
“That’s not it either…… This man here is the detective Sherlock Holmes, and I’m his assistant.”
“Ah, I’ve heard of you. So you’re that Holmes. Must’ve been tough comin’ all the way out here.”
It seemed he had little interest in celebrities: hearing Sherlock’s name didn’t stir up much of a reaction.
Sherlock stared into his beer glass.
“By the way, you said something just now about a ‘family matter’?”
It seemed he had remembered what the owner said earlier, about there being something interesting. Then, the owner’s voice turned slightly cheery.
“Actually, my daughter’s in London now, and she’s getting married. She’s bringing her fiancé here the evening after tomorrow. I’ve met him just once before, but he’s a solid chap. I was kinda worried she’d get on with some weird fellow, so I’m relieved.”
“Congratulations — you must be proud.”
At John’s words, the owner rubbed the back of his head in embarrassment.
“Thanks. I’m also planning a wedding celebration that night, with some friends from the nearby villages.”
Sherlock hummed in reply. It wasn’t clear if he was interested or not.
“But the second floor is used as an inn, right? Wouldn’t the noise invite complaints?”
“Not to worry: there’s only one person staying upstairs now, and I’ve already gotten his agreement. Anyway, it’s pretty rare for outsiders to come to a small village like this. I still run the inn for formality’s sake, but most of my income comes from this pub.”
“But there is one person here.”
“Yeah, a guy who just arrived a while ago. It seems he’s an obscure painter; he said he wanted a quiet place to concentrate on his art and stimulate his creativity, so he’s rented a room for around ten days.”
That number startled John.
“That’s quite a long stay.”
“The rooms are all empty anyway, so I don’t mind at all. Also, instead of an atelier, well…… can you see it from here?”
The owner pointed at something beyond the window. A little ways from the inn, at the end of a patch of exposed, blackened earth, stood a small shed.
When the two men caught sight of the shed and nodded, the pub owner continued.
“It was originally a stable, but got remodelled into a storage shed. This guy said it was easy to concentrate there, so he moved lots of bulky luggage into the shed via carriage, and now he spends most of his day cooped up inside.”
“Something seems off. What happened to his original belongings?”
“There weren’t many to begin with, so now they’ve been moved to an empty room on the second floor. The others in the village don’t really like him, but he pays his bills on time, so I’ve nothing to say to that. And there weren’t many things in the shed in the first place, so he’s not causing me any trouble.”
Just as the owner finished speaking, the shed door opened, and they saw a man walk out alone.
Sherlock spoke up.
“Is, that the artist?”
“Yeah, his name is Rheos. I think he’s from around France.” [2]
Rheos was a pale, lanky young man dressed in awfully shabby clothes: he truly looked like an artist detached from reality. His shoulder-length hair hid most of his features, but his quick steps revealed the strength in his legs. He was carrying a large, dirty case under his arm.
“…………”
Sherlock stared with inscrutable eyes as he tried to figure out where Rheos was going, but quickly turned back to the barkeep.
“So, is he using this place as a base, and travelling around the area to paint landscapes?”
The owner shook his head.
“I thought so too at first, but apparently he practises by referencing works from famous artists.”
“Hmm, you said earlier that he always coops himself up in that shed. I thought he’d go out during the day if he’s painting scenery.”
“He’s an odd one, that’s for sure. But anyway, I’m the one who took him in, and he hasn’t caused any problems so far. I say it’s up to him where and how he wants to paint. ——By the way, Mr Detective—”
He leaned over to Sherlock a little.
“What is it?”
“From your detective work, I’m sure you’ve seen many strange cases, now haven’t you? If you’re willing, why not tell us about one or two at the dinner party?”
The owner broke into a wide grin, but on the contrary, Sherlock’s face twitched. To be honest, it was simply awkward to attend a complete stranger’s wedding party. Hence he decided to gently turn down the offer.
“……Umm, thank you for the invitation, but——”
“——Hmm? How about it? It’s my precious daughter’s wedding, y’know. I’ll do anything to make things even a little more exciting.”
However, contrary to his expectations, the pub owner seemed adamant that Sherlock regale the guests with stories from his detective work. The strength of his insistence had flustered Sherlock for a moment, but eventually, he clapped his partner’s shoulder beside him.
“In that case, John here can go. After all, he’s witnessed many of the strange things I’ve encountered up close.”
“Huh? What’re you saying, Sherlock!?”
Realising that he was being offered up instead, John panicked. As much as he wanted to congratulate the happy couple on their marriage, he didn’t want to be sent out to speak before a whole bunch of strangers.
“You’re always complaining about this and that — only now do you appreciate me? It’s not fair!”
“No need to be humble. I can personally guarantee your ability as a storyteller.”
“No, hold on just a——”
“——Oh, so you’ll be speaking in place of him, eh?”
Unfortunately for John, the owner had now set his sights on him.
“U-Uh, I……”
John put both hands before him in an effort to convey that he wouldn’t be joining the party, but in the face of the pub owner’s blinding smile, he realised all resistance would only be futile.
“Alright. I shall attend……”
“Thank you. As a further token of my thanks, have some slightly more expensive beer on the house.”
Now in a great mood, the owner took two bottles of beer from the shelves behind him.
Having been forced into speaking in public about their cases — a fine mess indeed — John was downright depressed. Sherlock patted him on the shoulder.
“Sorry. If I were to talk instead, it would just sound like I’m bragging. Do you want to get some practice in while you can?” suggested Sherlock, with a half-smile.
“You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?”
John shot him a reproachful glare.

Positive Affirmations
((A while back, somebody asked for the story of the first time Orpheus hypnotized Uriah. I did some thinking on it and I think I finally found the right scenario for it!))
“Are you alright, love?”
Uriah glanced over his shoulder and saw Orpheus looking back at him in the dim moonlight. The human had gotten up, unable to fall asleep, his mind too muddled. He’d carefully untangled himself from the naga’s embrace nearly half an hour before and sat in silence at the edge of his bedding, mindful not to bump any of his coils. Perhaps he hadn’t been cautious enough?
“I didn’t mean to wake you up. I’m sorry,” he apologized, voice quiet.
“You didn’t, but your absence did,” Orpheus yawned, pointed fangs catching the light for a moment as he sat up. He rolled his shoulders and neck with a soft crack before looking to Uriah again. Scales whispered against the furs, blankets, and pillows as Orpheus shifted and slithered, coming to rest behind Uriah and putting his arms around him.
“Come back to bed, love...”
“I will, eventually,” Uriah sighed. “You go ahead. You’re tired.”
“Not without you,” he mumbled. The man could imagine the sleepy pout on the naga’s face. Uriah gave one of his hands a gentle pat as he cuddled closer.
“It’s okay, babe. I...just have a lot on my mind.”
“Hmm? Like what?”
Uriah exhaled slowly and Orpheus rested his cheek in his hair. He felt heavier than usual.
“Orpheus, babe, sleep. You’re gonna doze off on me. I’m fine, really.”
“Mmmmnnnooo,” he drawled stubbornly, “not without you.”
“...You’re really not gonna let it go, are you?”
Orpheus shook his head.
“It feels stupid. I hate you even woke up because of it,” Uriah muttered.
“Tell me anyway. You’ll feel better.”
He sighed, loosely holding on to Orpheus’s arms as he tried to find a comfortable way to voice his thoughts.
“I still deal with a lot of the negative stuff from my ex,” he started slowly, quietly. “Not that he’s in my life at all, because I kicked him out and whatever I couldn’t throw in his bags I got rid of, but the feelings. The bad ones. Thinking I’m not good enough, feeling like I don’t deserve you, that sort of thing.”
Orpheus let out a light but somber hum. He turned over one of his hands to hold Uriah’s and interlocked their fingers. It had only been a month or so since they’d admitted their feelings for one another, but perhaps it was naive of the demigod to assume his sweetheart would recover from a painful relationship in such a short time.
“You know you do deserve better, don’t you?”
“Yeah. But knowing and feeling are two different things.”
“Yes, they are,” he agreed. His thumb brushed over Uriah’s. “Is there some way I could help?”
“What do you mean? Like, play therapist for me?” Uriah let out a weak, halfhearted laugh. “That wouldn’t be fair to you. Should probably see a shrink, though...”
“I don’t know what that is, but I was thinking I could try and do something for you. Maybe I could help you forget?”
“With...hypnosis, I’m guessing?” Uriah asked hesitantly.
“I could, you know,” Orpheus offered.
“...Nah. I don’t think I should forget what happened. Move past it and stop internalizing, but forgetting would mean leaving myself open to that kind of manipulation again,” Uriah reasoned. “Can’t protect myself from something I no longer remember, right?”
Orpheus hummed thoughtfully. He did have a point.
“What about affirmations?”
Uriah turned slightly, looking at Orpheus skeptically.
“You plan on flattering me through this?”
“Flattery is excessive. Affirmation is confirming what is true. I think you could use a dose of truth to clear out those negative falsehoods, don’t you?” he asked, cradling Uriah’s hand between two of his own. “Especially if they’re keeping you from proper rest, love.”
“You...wanna use your hypnosis to try this?”
“Only if you’d permit me.”
“I don’t think you’ve ever used yours on me, before.”
“Does the idea frighten you?”
“No,” he answered slowly, “not really? I-I’ve, uh, let Kenny hypnotize me plenty of times.”
He blushed as Orpheus’s eyebrows rose.
“Oh. So you’re familiar with the sensation, then?”
“I-In one way, at least.” Uriah cleared his throat awkwardly. They sat in a moment of odd silence before Orpheus spoke up again.
“Would you let me try, Uriah? At least a little? I only want to help you feel better.”
Uriah bit his lip and squeezed the back of his neck. Hypnosis had a tendency of getting him wound up. It wasn’t a bad thing, necessarily, but his time with Kenneth had left a bit of a subconscious imprint. He didn’t want to embarrass himself in front of Orpheus by suddenly getting turned on; they weren’t anywhere near ready for that step in their relationship, as attractive as Uriah thought the demigod to be. But...he trusted Orpheus not to take advantage. Maybe he could try it, at least this one time.
“I...I-I guess we can try it...”
Orpheus smiled sweetly and kissed his forehead before rising and gently guiding Uriah back towards the bed. He pulled his coils close, providing a space for the man in the bend of his tail.
“Come here,” he whispered. “Sit.”
Uriah did as he was told, albeit with some apprehension. He swallowed thickly as Orpheus’s strong coils could be felt against his back and sides, supporting him. It would only take a few moments for him to coil around him completely, if he wanted... To be in such a compromising position with him, and with the consent to hypnosis given—
“You’re letting yourself get flustered,” Orpheus chuckled, gently poking him between his eyebrows. Uriah blinked, bringing himself back to focus. He looked up at Orpheus sheepishly.
“I-I-I’m sorry. Usually with Kenny this is sort of a...a-an intimate thing?”
“I told you I’d take things slow with you, and I meant that. I’ll behave myself, dearest, I promise. You trust me to do that, don’t you?”
He reached out and brushed his fingertips along Uriah’s cheek, sliding them down to trace his jaw. The man nodded slowly.
“Y-Yeah.”
“Good. Give me just a moment to channel it, then.”
Orpheus closed his eyes and breathed slowly for several moments. Uriah remained still, wondering what to expect, caught mid-thought by Orpheus’s eyes opening with a pale blue, moonlike glow. His body tensed instinctively, but Orpheus kept his fingers against his face in a gentle touch.
“Shhh. It’s alright. You’re alright,” he hushed. “Just breathe, Uriah...that’s it...”
There was the initial spark of excitement Uriah had almost been conditioned to feel, but Orpheus’s soothing tone and his instructions reigned it back in quicker than Uriah could truly register it. He blinked at first, his mind naturally wanting to resist, but the calm glow was waiting for him whenever his eyes would open again. And the more Orpheus guided him through his breathing, the more he recognized an almost echo-like quality to his voice. He’d finish one word, and just as its final vibrations would register in Uriah’s mind there was another. Slow, gentle, rippling...
“There we are, good and calm now, aren’t you? That’s better, isn’t it?” Orpheus asked, smiling as he felt Uriah’s body slacken against the supportive coils behind and at his sides. They pulled a little closer, keeping him steady and stable, allowing his strength to leave him completely. Uriah stared back at Orpheus, at his mercy.
“Nn...Orpheus...?”
The naga hushed him, stroking his hair soothingly. Uriah’s eyelids slid a little lower and he sighed in response to the contact.
“Easy. Just relax. I’ve got you... Now, I think we’re ready to try some of those affirmations, hmm?”
Uriah lacked the strength to nod, but he managed a weak, slurred word of consent. Orpheus slid close, leaning over him as he took one of Uriah’s hand in his own.
“I want you to know that I care about you,” he said, speaking softly. “I care about you very much, Uriah. Do you believe me?”
“...Y-yes,” Uriah mumbled.
“Good. I want you to believe me. Many people care about you. You are loved, dearest. Very much so.”
He brought Uriah’s hand up and pressed his lips against the back of his palm. It sent a pleasant warmth down the length of Uriah’s arm, right to his core. It was different from the sensual heat he knew from Kenneth’s hypnosis. This was...calmer. Not any less sincere, but more...what was the word? There was a word for it... He couldn’t remember. The only words his mind could focus on were the ones coming out of Orpheus’s mouth. He felt them just as much as he heard them. They kissed his ears and melted into his mind, anchoring themselves there.
“I’m going to tell you some truths, Uriah. Ones I want you to remember, even if it’s only little by little. Do you think you can do that? Answer me.”
It took a few breaths, but Uriah gained enough control to respond:
“Y-Yes...”
“Good. After each truth, I’m going to use a gesture to help you remember. A simple one.”
He held Uriah’s hand close, stroking across his knuckles.
“I will tell you a truth to remember. The way I touch you will be how you remember. When I touch you, commit it to memory. Do you understand?”
“Nn...mmhmm...”
“Good.”
Orpheus’s smile warmed. He hadn’t used his hypnosis on someone in such a way before; it felt very nice to physically see Uriah so open to suggestions, helpful ones, rather than struggling against the emotional barriers his past experiences had created. They were gone, at least for the moment. He could disturb their foundation this way, give Uriah the tools to shake them up and finally tear them down for good. It was perhaps the best use of his powers to date.
“Now, where to start...”
He thought over it for a moment, and then began in earnest.
“Uriah, you are worthy of others’ time and attention. You deserve more than scraps and spare seconds.”
Orpheus bent his head, turning Uriah’s hand over and kissing the inside of his wrist. The same tingling warmth shivered it’s way into Uriah’s center. He wasn’t sure how to explain it, but Orpheus could see the recognition and obedience flicker across Uriah’s gaze as it reflected his own hypnotic glow back at him. He was remembering, as he was told. Good.
“You deserve to be heard and listened to,” he continued, that time leaning in and kissing the shell of Uriah’s left ear, and then his right. He moved slowly to avoid stirring Uriah from his trance.
“You should always be your fullest self. Never shrink yourself to fit into someone else’s space.”
His lips pressed against Uriah’s chest, just beneath the collar of his shirt. The man let out a soft sound in response, and Orpheus hushed him before continuing.
“Always remember you have a beautiful, brilliant, compassionate mind. No one can take that from you, or belittle it. Believe in your own strength and stability of mind. Nurture it.”
Orpheus cradled Uriah’s face between two hands and kissed his forehead. He could feel Uriah’s slowed breathing against his skin, the warmth radiating off of him, the gentleness emphasized by his current state... He really did adore him.
“And the last truth I want you to remember,” he said quietly, “is that I care for you. I want nothing but the best for you. And that means loving yourself. Love yourself, Uriah. Fully. Unashamedly. Because I do...”
That time, he brought his lips to Uriah’s, lingering longer than the other kisses prior. It wasn’t sexual, or overly passionate, but there was a genuine, sensual intimacy. Orpheus expressed his full affection so that Uriah’s mind would recognize it. When he finally pulled back, Uriah’s glowing eyes were barely open, his expression soft, and a hint of heat on his freckled cheeks. Orpheus stroked the edges of his jaw for a few moments more.
“Remember all of that, Uriah,” he whispered. “Will you?”
“I...Nn...I-I’ll...remember,” he sighed.
“Good. Good boy, Uriah,” Orpheus praised, combing his claws through his hair.
“And now, love, I think you should rest. You can close your eyes and sleep. I’ll be right here, I promise.”
Orpheus told him to rest. He wanted to look at those eyes for a little longer, but the demigod’s words were so strong. And the sensation of his fingers running through his hair was so comforting. Uriah’s vision flickered.
“Sleep, Uriah,” Orpheus repeated, softer, sweeter.
With a sigh, Uriah finally gave out, the obedience instilled by the trance winning over any residual desires or thoughts. His cheek rested against Orpheus’s scales as his breathing deepened and slowed, finally deep under the influence of sleep. Orpheus settled close to him, using his tail to bring the blankets up over Uriah. He watched him for a few minutes, still tracing the very tips of his fingers along Uriah’s cheek, hoping that he’d managed to get through to him. He hadn’t attempted to use his hypnosis in such a way before, but it appeared to have been working in the moment. Closing his eyes and settling in more comfortably beside Uriah, Orpheus decided to leave it up to time to tell if Uriah’s mind would take any of his affirmations seriously.
Morning came peacefully, the dappled rays of light reaching across the floor of Orpheus’s chamber. Uriah’s eyes cracked open, blinking several times to adjust to the daylight. Where was he...? Oh. Right, right, with Orpheus. Those were his scales against him. He hadn’t slept so deeply in a long time; he felt a little stupid, being so under that he forgot where he was.
“Damn,” he mumbled to himself, sitting up and rubbing at his eyes, “I dunno if Kenny’s even gotten me that deep before...”
His hand moved to shove his bangs back, but the moment he touched his forehead he felt a strange, rippling warmth rush through him. Uriah flinched and gasped, staring at his hand. It didn’t look like anything had been done to it... He gingerly touched his head again and felt the same sensation. His brain buzzed for a few seconds. Pleasantly. It wasn’t brain fog, or a headache, it was...almost like remembering something? Uriah blinked in bewilderment.
“What the...?”
Words. Something about words. His mind scrambled as he drug his hand down the side of his face, trying to sort it out. He looked at his right palm again and brought his left to inspect, but the same jarring feeling caught him off guard as he brushed his own wrist. The initial shock wore away and it instead felt...soothing? Uriah brushed his thumb over his wrist, feeling the warmth creep up in several places.
You deserve time...you’re brilliant...love—
Uriah flinched again and shook himself free of the feeling. It was almost hypnotic itself.
“Geez, what in the world...?”
Beside him, Orpheus finally started to stir. The naga was mid-stretch when Uriah leaned over the large coil between them and stared down with wide, flustered eyes.
“H-Hey! What exactly did you do to me?!”
Orpheus opened one eye.
“Good morning to you, too, dearest,” he yawned dryly. “What do you mean?”
“I-I-I’m feeling...things.”
“What?”
“You did something!”
Orpheus propped himself up on one arm and tilted towards Uriah, looking at him with sleep still fading from his eyes.
“Of course I did ‘something.’ I used my powers on you, love.”
“Yeah, but—“
“Hush,” Orpheus pressed, the tip of his tail rising up against Uriah’s lips. There it was again. Orpheus finally saw what Uriah meant as the man faltered, eyes going hazy and unfocused.
“Ah, I see. Hmm... Perhaps I was a little too intense?” he wondered aloud.
Uriah blinked, feeling that warm buzz wash over him. Pleasant. A reminder of...of affection? That felt right, didn’t it? It...seemed right... He could vaguely recall those words that had echoed around in his head...
“Or...O-Orpheus...?”
“Hold on, let me see here,” the naga tutted, gently touching his fingertips to the place on Uriah’s chest he had kissed during the trance. Uriah drew in a breath, eyes actually closing for a moment, overwhelmed by the sensation. It felt like being held, nurtured. Loving himself. Being loved. Feeling whole and content and unbroken. He felt his mind starting to swim in it, until Orpheus retracted his hand and tail—slowly, so as to prevent Uriah from suddenly slipping when coming out of the light trance-like state.
“My apologies, Uriah. Seems I might’ve overdone it just a bit. The immediate effects will wane, though; it won’t be as strong in a day or two.”
“W-What is it you did, exactly?” Uriah asked, much calmer than he had been a few minutes before.
“I used contact to help secure some of the affirmations to your subconscious,” he explained, shrugging as if it were common sense. Uriah stared at him. Orpheus cleared his throat and tried again.
“I used physical affection to bind the memory of my words to you. Positive touch, positive thoughts. Did they come to you just now?”
“Yeah, a-after a few seconds,” Uriah admitted. “It’s just...uh...a little strange to get used to...”
“The sensation, or thinking positively about yourself?”
Uriah instinctively bit his lip to think, but that triggered the sensation again. He released with a short gasp. Orpheus reached forward and placed his hand against his face, purposefully stroking his thumb across Uriah’s mouth. A shiver ran down his spine, but he mustered up the will to speak.
“H-H-Hey. Easy.”
Orpheus smiled.
“It will wane,” he repeated, “but I hope the thoughts stay. I want you to feel better, to know how special you are.”
“As w-weird as it is, I... I appreciate it,” Uriah thanked him, blushing shyly. They remained still together for a moment, listening to the ambient sounds of the birdsong and rustling of leaves in the morning air.
“Hey, uh... What all did you put in my head?”
“I think you’ll have more fun if you find out for yourself,” Orpheus teased.
“At least tell me one?”
“Oh, very well. Which would you like to know?”
“Maybe...?” He pointed up at his lips, too flustered to say it. Orpheus’s grin widened.
“Love. Pure affection, for yourself from inside and out.”
“Oh.”
That was...surprisingly sweet and genuine. Nothing overly sexual from Orpheus? He had expected at least a little teasing, maybe, but knowing he had stuck to his promise to behave made the warmth in his chest return. The demigod didn’t ask him to change; he made room for him, instead, no ‘shrinkage’ required.
“Can... Can I get another one of those?” Uriah asked, referring to the touch to his lips. His face was growing red. “Y-Y’know, just so I remember right...?”
“You certainly can,” Orpheus purred, leaning close. Uriah didn’t flinch away or tense as he felt the naga’s lips against his own. The warmth that radiated through him felt twofold. And for the first time in at least a year, he allowed himself to think: I deserve this.

                                      *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Sipping on my tea, I looked around at our guests in the house, all members of the ‘Grace Shelby Institute’. We had to keep up appearances, and although both Tommy and I hated socialising with people who used to turn their noses up at people like us, they were the ones providing the money. Normally, we would keep most events out of the house, but Tommy had pissed me off, and seeing as he was too busy to help organise it, I made all the arrangements; being petty was sometimes the only way I could get back at him.
“Mrs Shelby, what a lovely home you have! And the decor for today is just lovely.” an older, highly posh woman gushed to me.
I smiled.“Thank you. I am quite proud of myself.”
“I have not had the chance to speak with your husband yet. It seems he keeps vanishing into thin air.”
“Yes, he does have a habit of doing that.”
Knowing that there was no point in trying to track down Tommy, I suffered through an awfully dull conversation with the lady, having to disguise my boredom with polite smiles as more women joined us. They were all much older, I had seen a few young women here, all married to very rich men who were twice their own age; I suppose I couldn’t judge, it wasn’t like Tommy and I were actually in love.
“You know Mrs Shelby, I have always wondered how you met a man like Thomas Shelby.” one of the women said.
She was bold to say something like that, especially to me. I refrained from sighing as I started to recite the story Tommy and I made up.
“Well, it seems very cliche, I must say. We met when he was meeting with my father, obviously wanting to unite our businesses. I ended up being in the right place at the right time, we easily fell into a conversation with each other which was unfortunately interrupted by my father. Thomas was very confident to take me out to dinner, right in front of my father may I add! Surprisingly he was a charmer, and I guess we just fell in love along the way.”
The ladies all cooed, some covering their heart with their hand as if it were the most romantic thing they had ever heard. It was all bullshit. We had to make it as vague as possible, make sure that they had nothing more to gossip about. Both Tommy and I had been married before, they were our real loves; and both had been murdered by a rival, but who received more sympathy after they died? And who was called vicious, degrading names when she re-married to a wealthier, more powerful man? People of ‘society’ were disgusting.
“Finn,” I called out as I approached him, luckily escaping the women,“have you seen your brother?”
“Which one?” he smirked.
I smiled back, ruffling up his hair to annoy him.“The one I’m married to.”
He quickly smoothed it back down.“Not sure. Haven’t seen him in a while.”
“Alright, just keep an eye out for him, yeah?”
Although it wasn’t uncommon for Tommy to disappear (especially to avoid these groups of snobs), he had been gone for a while. He may have been frustrated by my choice of venue, but he would still inform me if he had to leave for business. This made me all the more suspicious.
Leaving the main room, I hastily walked down the halls, leaving the noise behind me. There was an uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach, wishing that I didn't have an idea of where he could be...and who with. Brushing past staff carrying food and beverages, I made my way upstairs, checking our bedroom first. He was the lowest of low if he was up here; luckily, they hadn’t used this room. Checking through our bedrooms, it was only two doors down from our own when I heard heavy breathing. Taking a deep breath, I gripped onto the handle, bursting in and confirming my suspicions.
“If you’re almost finished, we have guests waiting for you downstairs.” I stated, averting my gaze away from the scene before me.
Lizzie had been bent over the bed, with her dress pulled up over her hips (how classy), and my husband right behind her. She bolted upright, shimmying her dress back down and pulling her underwear up; even after being caught in the act, she looked smug, head held high as she walked past me. Looking back at Tommy, he had an annoyed expression as he did up his trousers. I didn’t want to speak to him, but he called me back before I had a chance to leave.
“We need to speak about this.” he said.
“We do. But not now, not whilst I am hosting this event for the organisation you created for your dead wife.” I snapped, slamming the door shut behind me.
Luckily I had put a time limit on the event, and this time there was a genuine smile on my face as they all left. That was before I remembered what I had witnessed earlier. It was going to go down much messier than I first anticipated, especially since the tension between us had been building up after I caught them in the act. My footsteps were heavy on the way to Tommy’s office, not even bothering the knock before entering. In his usual spot at his desk, whiskey already poured, there was no reaction from him when he saw the fury in my eyes.
“Glad you’re settled for the evening.” I spat, hands on my hips as I stood opposite him.
“This is about earlier?” he coughed.
“What else would we talk about?”
“I’m guessing it has upset you.”
“Not for the reasons you’re thinking.”
He didn’t reply, instead lighting a cigarette.
“Tommy, I understand that there is that bullshit saying ‘all men have urges that need to be fulfilled’, but it doesn’t mean you can disrespect me in my own home.”
“Your home?”
“Yes, my home. I’m here a lot more than you are anyway. And of all the times to be fucking her, you chose the annual Grace Shelby Institute meet up?”
“Don’t say her name.” he mumbled.
I scoffed.“It’s the only way I can get your attention nowadays.”
Tommy raised from his chair, still smoking.“Attention? Since when have you ever wanted my attention?”
“We both knew that this marriage wasn’t based off of love, nor were we ever going to fall in love along the way. However, I have been nothing but a model wife to you. I keep up appearances on your behalf, I make up excuses for your disappearances, I also ensure that your reputation isn’t tarnished by people speaking about you behind your back! And if that doesn’t deserve some fucking respect then I don’t know what does! Also, don’t you think I miss the touch of a man? How many times have I come across men that have shamelessly flirted with me whilst you’re not around, and how easy would it have been to sneak away for just a moment to gain some satisfaction?!”
I could feel my face burning up as I ranted, hating that I wasn’t gaining any sort of reaction from him. Was he this blank with Grace? Was he this blank with Lizzie?
“So you’re asking me to stop seeing Lizzie?”
“I’m not asking you that, because even if I did, you would keep doing it anyway.”
“You don’t know that.”
“Yes, I do. I just want respect. I don’t deserve to be humiliated like this.”
“No one knows.”
“Your family does! And even if they didn’t, that means I don’t deserve respect?”
He sighed as he stubbed out his cigarette.“I didn’t mean it like that.”
“You said it nevertheless.”
“What do you want me to do then?”
“Really Tommy? I want some common fucking decency.”
“Ask and you shall receive.”
I groaned, leaving before I said something I truly regretted. He was acting as if he didn’t give a shit (which he probably didn’t), which only angered me more. Who would want to be stuck in such a place? Letting out an angry scream, I picked up an expensive vase, raising it high above my head before throwing it on the floor with all my might. The pieces glided out across the hardwood floor, some spraying onto my shoes. A few servants rushed in, obviously alarmed by the noise. Instead of apologising, I marched past them, heading up the long stairs and to the bedroom; I would have preferred to grab the leftover bottles of champagne as a nightcap, but exhaustion from my anger would have to do.
Tommy still slept beside me that week, he still ate breakfast with me, sometimes dinner if he wasn't busy. He also tried to have normal, short conversations with me, though even when we glanced at each other, the tension was thick between us. It pissed me off that he was acting normal, and I knew that's why he was doing it...making me even more mad.
"I have a potential business partner coming here today." He informed me over breakfast.
"Why are they coming here?" I asked.
"I couldn't have a meeting elsewhere."
"I thought you said you don't like bringing business home...though come to think of it, you don't really do that either."
"Glad that's settled then."
I assumed that Tommy would want me out of the way when this 'partner' arrived. A good place to go was out to the stables, tend to the horses to take up time. However, I wasn't in the mood for riding or mucking out, instead opting to watch them be trained for racing. Leaning against a fence, I wasn't surprised that my mind was elsewhere, wondering why Tommy was still being so nice to me. We very rarely argued, mostly because neither of us wanted to face the problems at hand, especially when there were more pressing matters to deal with. But after yelling at him like I had, I expected some sort of silent treatment, or even for him to avoid me completely.
"Mrs Shelby?" a butler said from behind me. He continued as I turned around."Mr Shelby's meeting was to commence at twelve, but he is not here at present. However, his business partner has arrived. And..."
"And?"
"And Mr Shelby has asked that you keep him company whilst he is gone. He has assured me he shall be no longer than half an hour."
It was highly unusual for me to meet any of Tommy's associates. This meant that the man couldn't be any sort of threat, he wouldn't expose me like this. Following the butler back inside, I followed him to the parlour, preparing to act as a good host and a good wife.
"I'm sorry that my husband has kept you waiting, he's never been great with time keeping." I said as I walked in, the man having his back towards me.
As he turned around, my eyes widened, as did his.
"Christopher?!" I exclaimed.
"(Y/N)?!" He smiled, rushing towards me.
"Is that really you? What are you doing engaging in business with the Shelby's?"
"My firm is expanding, for some reason Thomas Shelby stepped forward and offered to become partners. I haven't heard about you for years!"
"Neither I about you. Ever since you moved away, we lost contact."
"And now you're the new Mrs Shelby. Bit risky isn't it?"
I laughed."Come sit down, u want to hear everything you have been doing since we last saw each other."
Christopher was a very old friend of mine. We had known each other since we were eighteen, becoming friends after our families were connected through business. We had been young people wanting to rebel, wanting to have fun; we were never in a relationship together, though we would sleep with each other, spend long nights out drinking with our friends. As a lot of my friends went off to get married to higher business men, he was still there, until I selfishly left him behind to marry my husband, the man I truly loved. I had loved Christopher, not so much as someone I wanted to spend my life with, though neither just a friend; it sounded more complicated that it was.
"You know, I always felt slightly bad for marrying and leaving you like that." I admitted.
"Only slightly?" he nudged me.
"It's not my fault I fell in love! We both said that we would never marry each other, it wasn't right."
"No, you are correct. Though, that didn't stop us doing things that couples do."
I giggled."And we did that a lot."
"I'm sure Mr Shelby keeps you busy."
"He would...if he was ever here. Though even if he was..."
"(Y/N)?"
"I've said too much already."
"Have the two of you ever...or haven't rather-"
"No we haven't. And I am telling you this in full secrecy, it must never leave your lips." I pointed a finger at him, becoming serious.
"I promise. I would never do anything to expose you like that."
"Thank you Christopher." I laid my hand on his thigh, thinking nothing of it until he placed his over mine.
Slipping away my hand, I looked away from him, feeling how intense our eye contact was becoming. It was stupid that my heart was beating faster, I was becoming hot under the collar over the tiniest amount of contact.
"I'm assuming your wife knows who you are making a deal with?" I said to start the conversation again.
"There is no Mrs in my life at the moment. I'm afraid work came first and well...there has never been much time."
"Oh Christopher, that's no excuse! Let me guess, you've lost your charm?"
"It's been working on you, hasn't it?"
He got me again. Glancing around, I saw no servants, though I wouldn't be surprised if they were eavesdropping. However, it was Tommy and I that employed them, if they wanted to lose their job, that would he the way to do it. Standing up, I gestured for Christopher to follow.
"We're going on a walk." I announced.
"What about your husband?"
"He will be ages before he gets here. And I'm allowed to show my old friend around the place."
We headed out of the front door, and without saying anything, I guided him down the path that led away from the house.
"(Y/N), I thought you were showing me around your home?" Christopher pointed out.
"I am. We're just starting at the beginning."
"What is that...hut?"
It was a small stone shed, one that would have been used to either keep guns or tools used to maintain the land, keep it tidy. Tommy had another one built closer, initially wanting to knock it down but soon forgetting about it. Now it was empty, the only things remaining being a desk and a chair. It was in front of the trees, slightly hidden by them. You would have to have a sharp eye to spot it, whether you were walking or driving by. Using my shoulder to budge it open, I stepped inside, closing the door after Christopher walked in.
"(Y/N), I'm not stupid, I know why we've come here." He said, staying close by me.
I hesitated to speak, knowing that I hadn't thought this through properly."Christopher... I wouldn't be doing this if-"
"Your husband is Thomas Shelby, this is dangerous for both of us."
"It isn't. He's allowed to go off and do what he wants, because he's Thomas fucking Shelby, and he's a man. Even if he found out about any of this, he wouldn't hurt someone if I asked him not to. He's good to me in that manner."
His hands came up to either side of my face."I'm worried about you, I've never seen you so..."
"Desperate?" I clung onto his jacket, pulling him closer.
"I couldn't believe it was you when you walked in. You're still as beautiful as you were when we were eighteen."
Although he was being a sweetheart and I hadn't received such compliments in a long time, I was inpatient. We both knew where this was headed, and it wasn't going to be as romantic or adventurous as it used to be.
Hungrily kissing me, his arms wrapped around my torso, reaching down to my arse as I pulled off his coat. Pulling away for a moment, he pushed me towards the desk, helping me scramble on top of it. My legs instantly spread as I ruffled up the bottom of my dress, using one hand to grab the back of his neck and kiss him again. I felt his hand slide up my thigh, gasping as he pulled my underwear aside. The sensation filling my body had been badly missed, and I felt myself writhing against his fingers. Leaning back against the wall, I moaned loudly, heavily breathing as I grinded my hips. He slowed down his movements, knowing how much it was frustrating me.
"Christopher..." I struggled to say."Fuck, please...don't stop."
He leaned in to my neck, sloppily missing it as he spoke in between."I loved teasing you like this."
I groaned as he removed his fingers, instantly reaching down to unbuckle his trousers. Before I could take a turn to torture him back, he pulled me off the desk, quickly turning me around and bending me over it. I yelped out in surprise, smiling at the thrill of it all. He tapped my legs apart, moving my skirts out of the way. I felt his skin on mine before he thrusted into me, making me cry out in pleasure. It didn't even matter if anyone could hear us, I hadn't fucked for God knows how long.
He was slow at first, building up the feeling that was in the pit of my stomach. I moaned out his name, reaching back to grab any piece of hm. He had a tight grip on my hips, especially as he started to quicken his pace. The noises escaping his mouth were somehow exciting me, I needed to feel and hear all of this. The pinching of skin from his hold didn't bother me, both of us shouting out each others names along with profanities before he came, but he kept going until I did too. With both of us finished and out of breath, Christopher gently collapsed over me.
"Fuck." I sighed as he pulled out.
Shakily straightening up, I made sure I was dressed correctly, kissing him gently one last time. My body couldn't believe what it had just gone through, and it already wanted more. Before we could say or do anything else, we heard the distant sound of a car, and it could only be headed this way.
"Shit." Christopher stressed, hastily getting dressed.
"It's OK! It'll be OK, Christopher!" I tried to calm him down.
"He's back already!"
"We'll head back and act like nothing happened. I was just walking around with you."
Making sure we both looked normal, we nervously made our way back to the house. My legs were still shaking as he speedily walked, but I said nothing, seeing the stress and fear plastered on his face.
"Ah, Mr Alexander, I see you have met my wife." Tommy was stood in the foyer, unnaturally smiling.
"We actually know each other. We grew up together." I explained, standing beside him.
Then it clicked.
"If you don't mind, I just need a quick word with my wife."
Christopher nodded, politely smiling at both of us before following the butler to Tommy's office. He turned to face me, casually putting his hands in his pockets.
"You invited him on purpose." I said.
"You might want to go lie down for a bit." He didn't say it maliciously, but I was still wary.
"Tommy, please don't hurt him. I initiated it, please don't-"
"I'm not going to do anything to him. He's done what I thought he would do."
"I'm confused. Why would you want him to sleep with me?"
"You said so yourself, why should it just be me doing what I want? You're Mrs fucking Shelby, you've got the power." He started to walk away, leaving me to still think about what he had done.
Still shaky but reeling from the events that unfolded, I ended up smiling."That scheming mother fucker."

Pact it in - Spencer
We have a new fic!! everyone handclaps for @hypotheticalforest for this great idea!! i made a tiiiiny detail change but it wasn’t huge.
request: Spencer and reader are best friends that are both fed up with dating so they made a pact to get married if they’re both still single at 35? But then the reader starts talking to other guys and notices that Spencer is sabotaging things? Like coincidentally texting her while she’s out, point out their flaws, little stuff like that. Spencer doesn’t realize what he’s doing until she calls him out?
warnings: tbh i dont think there are any. a little angsty but i promise there’s fluff.
__________________
“Spencer, what the hell is wrong with you?” You asked as he pushed open your apartment door.
Spencer, as smart as he was, seemed to be a total idiot sometimes.
“What do you mean? That guy literally was checking out the waitress when he should’ve been checking you out. Did he even make a comment on your highlighter? Your cheekbones look immaculate.” Spencer held the door open for you as you walked in.
“How did you even happen to show up to the same bar where we chose to get drinks?” You asked, putting your bag down on the couch, collapsing next to it.
“I didn’t know that’s where you were going. Morgan just asked me to stop by there with him.” Spencer shrugged.
“Oh, so Morgan asked you to stop by the place where I had my date, profile him, make an ass out of both you and me, and then bring me home after almost punching the guy?” You questioned, skeptically.
You knew Spencer could be an idiot but you didn’t know he could be so dumb to think he would sneak this one past you.
“Y/n, I’m sorry. I genuinely didn’t know that you were going to be there and I thought a night with Morgan would be a good thing for me.” Spencer said looking down at his feet.
“Spencer, what are you talking about? You hate bars.” You wondered what Spencer could possibly be going on about.
“I feel like you’re pulling away and we’ll miss the big day...” Spencer got quiet as he watched your emotions shift in front of him.
“Spencer…” You said, all angry resolve melting off of you.
Spencer didn’t look forward to his birthday. Too much had happened over the years and so little of it was good. He didn’t have much to celebrate so he didn’t bother celebrating it. His mom wasn’t doing that great, the team was constantly shifting, and nothing was stable for him except his relationship with you. This birthday was bound to be different. He had been looking forward to it ever since you made the pact.
A few years ago, you and Spencer decided that you needed to focus on your careers and not bother with dating anyone because nothing was turning out right. You both agreed that if you were both single at 35, you would date each other and if things went well, your happy ending would be with the other person. Your 35th birthday already passed and you weren’t seriously dating anyone. Spencer’s birthday was in a week and he made sure to stay single just for you.
“Are you still serious about that?” You asked.
“You aren’t?” Spencer could feel his heart breaking slowly.
“No, I mean… Spencer, come on.” You looked at your shoes.
There was a heavy silence between the two of you as you both thought back to the day when you made the agreement, putting it down on paper.
***
“Y/n, please get up.” Spencer said, trying to pull you up.
You hadn’t moved from bed in 3 days after you got dumped in the most humiliating way possible on Valentine’s Day: a text message after you booked a very expensive restaurant and bought the best champaign they had. They stood you up for an hour then said ‘Sorry luv. It’s not working out xx.”
“I’m worried about you.” Spencer said as you turned over so your back was facing him.
“You shouldn’t be. I’m just swearing off having a significant other for… Forever.” You said, sighing.
Spencer didn’t like to see you upset, especially not over a romantic interest. He knew how it felt to lose someone you really liked. His job had taken away so many people he felt a genuine connection with that he hated to think you were giving up on something that could be so wonderful. Ever the realist, Spencer was a hopeless romantic at heart.
“I don’t think you mean forever. Statistically, there’s no such thing, especially with matters of the heart.” Spencer was starting to get going on statistics about bad habits being the leading cause of breakups but you shot him a look that said you couldn’t handle statistics about your heart being broken.
“Well, long enough to make me forget that there are actually people in the world who hate my personality enough to stand me up and pretend like they were going to come back to me or even talk to me again.” You said, turning over to face Spencer completely.
“I like your personality enough to live with you.” Spencer said, staring at you.
“Spencer, we’re best friends, first, and second, you’re gone half of the time so you don’t have to put up with me all the time.” You said, sighing.
“That shouldn’t matter.” Spencer was confused at why being your friend would make anything different.
“But it does. You know parts of me that I hide from new people in my life and look at what happens. I still end up crying alone in my bed.” You saw a new set of tears begin to obscure your vision slightly.
“I don’t show all of myself and I lose people I love, even in the friend sense.” Spencer looked at you softly.
He knows how it feels to be hurt and he knew you could be sensitive when you were really invested in something or someone and you were disappointed, especially if you admired it a lot.
“What if we just married each other?” You said, sitting up.
“What?” The air in Spencer’s lungs were sucked out of him.
Of all the things he ever hoped you’d say, he didn’t think he would ever hear that one.
“You and I should just get married.” You repeated.
“Now?” Spencer was only capable of saying one word at a time as his heart was racing and his brain was overloading with happiness.
“No, not now. Let’s give it a few years… Maybe if we’re still single at 35, we’ll date each other with the intent of getting married. I mean, hell, we’re practically married already.” You said, smiling a little bit.
You always loved Spencer in a special way but you were always scared that he would turn you down so you never really went for it. You spent so much time burying the feelings that you didn’t think you even had a chance.
“Let’s put this on paper.” Spencer said, yanking a piece of paper out of his journal.
You wrote down the exact conditions you just outlined and drew two straight lines at the bottom for signatures. First, you signed. Spencer signed right after you.
“Promise?” You said, holding your pinky out.
“Promise.” He said, wrapping his pinky with yours.
***
“Do you still have the paper?” You asked, breaking the silence.
“Yeah.” Spencer nodded.
“Then the contract is still enacted.” You nodded slowly. You were trying to process what this meant.
“Do you still want me?” Spencer asked, trying to keep it together.
“Spencer… Listen.” You started. “I have spent years in love with you and it’s been hard. You’ve fallen in love with other girls and I’ve just been here. Waiting. So yeah, I started to look for other people because I don’t know if you even feel the same way, let alone still want to go through with that. Honestly, I haven’t forgotten about it. I just thought you would’ve thrown it out by now.”
“I do.” Spencer muttered.
“What?” You asked, making sure that you were hearing him correctly.
“I do. I still feel the same way and I’m still serious about the contract.” He said, looking up at you.
You were trying to find some hint of Spencer messing with you. You weren’t a profiler but this seemed too easy. This was going to lead in disappointment, right?
“So what now?” You asked, almost in a whisper.
“I guess we wait.” Spencer said, unsure what to really do.
“Wait?” Your thoughts were racing but you didn’t understand why you would wait when you both wanted the same thing.
“Yeah. It says we both have to be 35. I have one more week to go.” Spencer was so technical.
“So does that mean I can’t kiss you for a week?” You asked, a small smile on your face.
“The contract didn’t say anything about you giving me kisses…” Spencer blushed, his heart racing.
“Well then I guess we found a loophole.” You said, closing the distance between you and Spencer.

----------
Tumblr media
You chewed your lip as you glanced at the clock for what felt like the millionth time, the knot in your stomach twisting tighter with each second that passed. You turned your attention to the door opposite, your leg bouncing erratically as you resisted the urge to jump out of your seat and charge through it in your impatience. You hardly dared to think about what was going on on the other side, all manner of scenarios rushing through your head.
What was taking so long? Had something gone wrong?
That last thought alone caused your breath to catch in your throat and you hastily got up and walked to the nearby water cooler, busying yourself by filling a plastic cup and gulping down the lukewarm liquid. It wasn't the most refreshing experience, but it eased the lump in your throat. When the sound of the door handle turning filled your ears you whipped around to face it, eyes wide as a doctor and nurse emerged. You looked at them expectantly, waiting for them to break the news. You hoped it was good news.
"Everything is fine," the doctor assured with a polite smile. "He's going to need a little rehabilitation and there's a few things to keep a careful eye on, but he's going to be okay."
The sigh of relief you breathed could have knocked them both off their feet, as all the anxiety and uneasiness that had been building up over the last 12 hours fizzled and ebbed away.
"Can I see him?" You asked hopefully, chewing your lip again as you nervously awaited a reply.
The doctor and nurse shared a knowing look, before the doctor gave you a sympathetic smile.
"You can see him," he nodded, "but please keep in mind what he's been through. He's going to be okay but he is in pretty bad shape - just keep that in mind and try not to be too alarmed when you see him."
You nodded in understanding, a new wave of anxiety rolling over you as you placed a hand on the door handle. After what seemed like an eternity you were finally going to see him. So many hours of waiting with nothing to do but replay the last time you saw him over and over and over again - it had driven you almost mad. Now, you were allowed to see him, and it all felt so surreal.
Taking a deep breath, you swallowed your nerves and stepped inside.
-
The rhythmic humming and beeping of machines filled the otherwise silent room, and as you laid your eyes upon the figure on the bed you felt a wave of emotions overwhelm you. Relief, shock, worry, guilt, happiness, sadness, all swirling around like a chemical cocktail. You stepped forward with legs that felt like lead and stopped at the end of the bed, resting a hand on the frame and just looking at him. Taking him all in.
Tony Stark, the symbol of strength and durability, lay bruised and broken before you, tucked beneath a crisp white hospital blanket. A multitude of wires snaked out from beneath the cover, attached to various machines that monitored who knew what - all that mattered was that they were keeping him stable. The beeping of the heart monitor was like a symphony to your ears, reassuring you that he was okay, he was alive. After everything that had happened, Tony Stark was alive.
A single tear rolled down your cheek as the weight of the situation hit you. It could so easily have gone the other way. Using the gauntlet against Thanos should have killed him, the power in the stones more than any human could endure, yet somehow, against all odds, he'd survived. For once in your life, you were grateful for his stubbornness.
"Are you gonna stare at me this whole time or are you actually gonna say something?" Tony's voice cut through the silence, weak but still filled with his usual sarcasm, and you jumped at the sudden sound, blushing in embarrassment for getting caught staring. You quickly wiped the tears from your eyes and came closer to sit beside him.
"I thought you were asleep," you said softly, voice threatening to break.
"That's even creepier," he remarked, and you couldn't help but roll your eyes with a smirk.
"Nice to see you still have your crappy sense of humour," you teased, causing him to pout.
"Hey, you're supposed to be nice to me, I almost died."
"Really? You're playing that card already?" It was surprising how easy it was to fall back into your old habit of swapping banter - it made the current situation a lot easier to deal with, which you suspected was exactly why Tony was doing it. The serious talk would come later, when he was ready, but for now you were happy to lean on humour as a coping mechanism.
"Just tell me, how's the face? Because that's the real money maker."
You took the opportunity to really look at him, heart sinking as your eyes trailed over every bruise and cut and scar - reminders of what he'd been through. He looked a mess, but it was a relief to see that the impish glint was still in his eyes.
"Well, you're not gonna get any calls from Vogue anytime soon, but it'll do," you shrugged, unable to stifle a giggle.
"Ouch!" He gasped, holding a hand to his heart.
A heavy silence followed and you found yourself struggling for what to say next. When Tony’s hand touched yours you looked up to meet his eye.
"I'm okay," he reassured, squeezing your hand. "I'm okay."
You shared a smile as your eyes filled with more tears, and you finally allowed the emotions you’d been holding back to break through.
"I was so scared," you breathed, inching closer and gripping his hand tighter. "I thought we'd lost you."
It seemed wrong that he was the one who'd almost died yet you were the one sitting there crying, but now that you'd started you couldn't stop, as sobs ripped through you and the tears just kept coming. Tony did his best to comfort you, rubbing circles into the palm of the hand he was still holding and encouraging you to let it all out. He'd been through hell, but he could only imagine what it must have been like for his friends to witness it all unfold.
"You could've just said if I looked that bad, you know."
"Shut up," you giggled through your tears, taking a series of breaths to help calm down.
"You know, there's something I realised while I was busy thinking I was dead…”
"Yeah? What's that?"
"We may be a bunch of superheroes with fancy technology and the best gadgets money can buy, but it only takes one crazy guy, high on power, to bring it all crashing down."
"I'd really rather not think about that just yet."
"Sorry, it's just...I nearly died, and of all the things in my life I've messed up or regretted, not getting this off of my chest would have been my biggest mistake."
You raised an inquisitive eyebrow, sitting straighter in your chair in preparation for what he had to say.
"When I thought it was over and was heading towards the light - yeah, it's real - I didn't see God or St Peter or any other bearded guy waiting for me...I saw you,"
"What?"
He nodded, "I was done, Y/N. I was ready to die. I knew all along that's how it was going to end, and I'd accepted that. I was sick of fighting, just delaying the inevitable. I was ready to go, but then, right at the end, I saw you, and I remembered why I'd been fighting so hard in the first place."
You weren’t entirely sure where this was going, but your heart beat just that little bit faster in anticipation anyway.
It was no lie that you’d harboured feelings for Tony over the years, but you'd never once expected that he might actually feel the same. It was much easier to bury it away than admit how you felt about someone with his reputation.
"I couldn't leave without telling you how I really felt. Because it's you, Y/N, it's always been you - you've set me straight when I've lost my way, you've pulled me back from the edge more times than I can count. You've stopped me getting carried away, going overboard. You've always been there making sure I stayed on the right path, and I guess I wasn't ready to admit it before but, I kinda liked the thought of you having my back. I guess nearly dying puts things into perspective, but I just know that I couldn't leave without telling you how I really feel."
You stared, dumbfounded, as he babbled on. "Tony, what are you trying to say?"
At this point you were pretty sure your heart had stopped beating altogether, that familiar knot of anxiety twisting in your chest again. He took a deep breath as he carefully contemplated his next words.
"I love you, Y/N. I've loved you for a long time, but I never wanted to admit it because I knew that if I did it would mean it was real. I've spent so many years building this persona, wrapping myself up in a safety blanket and hiding away from my emotions. I didn’t want to just lay everything out for the world to see and make myself vulnerable."
"But. You're Tony Stark."
"I'm aware of that, yes."
"You're one of the biggest names in the world. You're important. I'm just a nobody."
"You're not a nobody, Y/N. Not to me."
Tears filled your eyes again but this time for a completely different reason. You couldn't deny that you hadn't thought about this moment from time to time, imagining how it might feel if he were to feel the same, but now that he was actually confessing it, it didn't feel real.
"It's always been you," he repeated, cupping a hand to your cheek and swiping a tear away with his thumb.
"Oh, Tony," you whimpered, leaning into his touch and closing your eyes. It felt so good to feel his warm palm against your skin, as though his hands had been made just to hold you. When he moved to tilt your chin up you opened your eyes, finding him already looking at you with an affectionate smile.
"Does this mean it's okay to kiss you?" He asked, though he was sure he already knew the answer. Without another word, you leaned forward and closed the gap between you, pressing the most gentle of kisses to his lips in fear of hurting him. He hummed in content and ran his free hand through your hair, holding you close for just a little longer.
When you parted, Tony rested his forehead against yours, the two of you closing your eyes and relishing this quiet moment between you. You weren’t sure when you’d get another, knowing the others would be here soon now that he was awake.
"You're not just saying you love me so that I smuggle you in some cheeseburgers are you?" You asked after a while, pulling away to look at him with a raised eyebrow.
"No, but is that a request I can make?"
"Well, I don’t want to get caught,” you thought aloud, tapping a finger on your chin for added effect. “But I can get Happy to pick some up for you. That way my hands stay clean.”
Tony grinned, the mischief in his eyes mirroring yours.
"That genius thinking is just one of the many reasons why I love you," he grinned, pulling you closer for another chaste kiss.

Memorable Birthday
Short Summary: Surprising your boyfriend on his birthday in a way he never expected.
Genre: Romance, fluff
Pairing: Lee Taeyong (NCT) x Fem!Reader ft. Mark & Johnny
Warnings: None tbh, fluff, lots of fluff, mentions of slight smutty content but pretty PG.
Key Words: Romantic dinner, friends to lovers, stable relationship, birthday surprise, silly & easy-going relationship, serious talk, confession, heart-warming
Word Count: 2758
It had been almost 5 months that you started dating Taeyong. You started off as friends and it took a while for both of you to come to terms with your feelings for one another and act on it. It was Taeyong who acted on it first. He ended up kissing you abruptly one day when you were helping him study English in your apartment. It was apparently Johnny’s idea, you found out later on. After pining after you for so long Taeyong decided to take matters into his own hands and follow Johnny’s advice to ‘’Just kiss her man.’’.
After that day the rest was history. Your inital worries about your friendship turning into a relationship were short lived because Taeyong was incredibly good to you as a boyfriend. He would text you constantly despite his hectic schedule and try to come and see you whenever he could. You expected things to be much worse. Like not being able to meet up often or even at all, but you could see how much he was putting in effort to be with you and it was so heart warming.
It was sometimes late night movie dates at your apatment, because he missed you in the middle of the night and he didn’t have an early schedule the day after so he would come over with a bunch of snacks with a goofy grin on his face and you would just enjoy each others company the whole night. Other times it would be him inviting you to the dorm, successfully being able to kick Johnny, Haechan and Doyoung to the 10th floor for a few hours because he wanted to treat you to a nice dinner he cooked for you. You would have to stop him when he got carried away though, not being able to get enough of your kisses. Those dates would mostly end with the both of you back at your apartment, limbs being all tangled up in the entry almost not being able to wait until you get to the bedroom.
You honestly felt like you couldn’t ask for a better boyfriend. You weren’t too different personality wise so when you had small disagreements or misunderstandings sometimes they were easy to fix as communicating with Taeyong was such a breeze, he was so caring and understanding. It had been amazing being with him for almost 5 months, even though neither of you uttered the big 3 words yet. You felt it through his actions and you tried your best to show it through your actions as well, it wasn’t that necessary to say it out loud.
Since you felt like Taeyong was the one taking care of you most of the time you decided to put in the extra effort to do something special for his birthday coming up. But there was one tiny problem. What kind of present were you supposed to get for your rich celebrity boyfriend? He could possess almost anything he wanted. So you started thinking about something different. Your aim was to totally surprise him and give him something unique. The idea that popped in your mind just 3 weeks before Taeyong’s birthday was singing to him. You weren’t one to keep secrets from each other however one thing you sucessfully managed to hide from him was your singing ability. At first you didn’t really mean to hide it, you were just shy and thought that you would never compare to your boyfriend who is a well known musical artist. So you kept it to yourself for a while and asked Mark and Johhny to keep their mouths shut for good measure.
Actually your plan was not only just singing to him but singing to him while also playing the guitar. There was one problem in this scenario too however, you had no idea how to play the guitar. You learned some chords way back when you were younger, but you didn’t remember anything. So you dediced to get help from an expert, of course it was none other than your best friend Mark. When you came to him with this idea suddenly demanding him to teach you how to play the guitar in just 3 weeks, to say he was shocked would be an understatement. Though not guaranteeing you’d be able to play the song you picked properly in just 3 weeks, he agreed to help regardless, not being able to refuse favors coming from you.
The 3 weeks of learning the guitar with Mark and then practicing almost everyday at home was tough, not to mention you had to sneak around to keep Taeyong from finding out. Of course there was also Johnny and his big mouth too. But he actually managed to keep it a secret for longer than you thought, even helping you by making up excuses when Taeyong would get suspicious sometimes. Though it was challenging, the results were decent. You could play the first verse, the chorus and the bridge of the song you choose just fine, while also singing along. Mark was impressed how much you learned in such a short span of time and kept hyping you up to build your confidence while Taeyong’s birthday was getting closer.
When it was finally the day before Taeyong’s birthday, thankfully it fell on a Saturday and he typically didn’t have schedule on the weekends. All your plans were ready, for Friday night you planned a small dinner at your place with just the two of you, even attempting to make him a cake. Although it didn’t turn out too well visually, it still tasted good so you hoped he would like it. At exactly 12:00 AM it would be July 1st and you would take out Mark’s guitar from the place you hid it and sing him the song you had been practicing non-stop for the past 3 weeks. For Satuday, on his actual birthday you planned to have a picnic by a lake nearby during the day and celebrate at the dorm with the boys at night.
Your heart started thundering in your chest when you finally heard your door bell ring. He was finally here. You checked the table you put together one last time and made sure everything looked perfect, not forgetting to check yourself out in the entryway mirror and adjusting the blush colored silk dress that complimented your figure perfectly too. When you finally opened the door you found your boyfriend looking very handsome in a white dress shirt and his favorite jeans. He even styled his hair, matching the semi-formal occasion when you only asked him to have dinner at your place.
His eyes danced on your figure from head to toe immediately bringing a smile to his face as he said;
‘‘Wow babe! You look incredible. What’s the occasion?’‘ laughing a little slightly by the end.
Eyeing him disapprovingly you replied; ‘‘Well, I don’t know. You tell me Mr. Lee.’’
‘’You don’t look too shabby yourself’‘ you continued, letting out a giggle.
He gently grabbed your your right hand and made you spin around.
‘‘I don’t know what I did to deserve this...’‘ he said still not being able to take his eyes off of you while smiling sheepishly.
You replied by locking your lips to his. There was a slight urgency hidden in the kiss, not being able to meet up with him properly for the past 3 weeks made you miss him so much. You could tell that he missed you too when he wasted no time to grab your waist to pull you closer and deepening the kiss. You pulled away a little bit sooner than he would like and even though you didn’t want to and said;
‘‘Taeyong... We should have dinner first. And I have a surprise for you.’‘
After giving you a one last peck he replied while looking deeply in your eyes;
‘‘I know, I know. I just can’t help myself. I guess I missed you too much...’‘
‘‘I know baby. I missed you too. But it’s dinner time now. Come on.’‘ you cooed while pulling him to the living room.
His eyes landed on the dinner table you put together and he let out a small gasp while his hands going towards his mouth.
‘‘Did you make all this for me?’‘ he was examining the different dishes you cooked for him that he loved.
‘‘To be completely honest, I don’t think I can get anywhere near you when it comes to cooking. But I still hope you like them. If you don’t you don’t have to finish.’‘ you said getting a bit self conscious.
Because you weren’t really much of a cook. Taeyong was the one who cooked for you all the time. And the times he didn’t cook you just ordered delivery food. But since this was a special occasion you tried your best to cook some of his favorite dishes.
Sensing your confidence faltering Taeyong quickly replied;
‘‘Of course I will love them. You made them for me after all. I will finish them all.’’ giving you a warm back hug and kissing your cheek.
One of the many reasons you loved Taeyong was his incredibly loving, supportive nature. Even if the food you cooked was terrible (which it wasn’t but) he would still try to finish it all with a smile on his face. And most likely the next time you attempted to cook he would teach you.
Taeyong enjoyed the dinner you cooked for him more than you expected. Even throwing a few compliments here and there and talking about how spoiled he feels. But as the dinner was slowly coming to an end you started getting more and more nervous about your little suprise. Clearing the plates on the table together and making room for the cake, it was then time to light the candles as it was almost 12 AM. Taeyong looked really happy seeing you even went the extra lengths to bake him a cake. You caught your hand holding the lighter trembling a little bit as all you could think about was the small performance you had been preparing for the past few weeks. Taeyong got the lighter from your trembling hand and looked at you with concerned eyes;
‘‘Babe, are you ok?’‘
‘‘Yeah I’m fine, let’s light the candles.’‘ you quickly replied back pretending to be ok.
He didn’t question you more while he finished lighting the candles. As the clock hit 12 AM you cheered;
‘‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABY!’‘
You could see the way his face lit up by the way he was gazing at you. Even though you told him to make a wish he shook his head and said;
‘‘I couldn’t have asked for a better birthday and a better girlfriend. What else can I wish for? I got everything I want right here.’‘ with his signature smile that made you melt.
You couldn’t help but smile back fondly at him as he blew his candles. Taeyong surprisingly enjoyed the cake too, asking you some questions about how you made it. But you could only think of the chords in your head, starting to get stressed like what if you made a mistake? You worked so hard to get it perfect, it would be a shame if you made a mistake while trying to do something nice for your boyfriend. The moment you dreaded finally came when Taeyong finished his cake and took his plate to put it into the dishwasher.
When he was in the kitchen you quickly took out the guitar you managed to conceal behind the couch by the very corner. Taeyong did a double take when he saw you with a guitar standing in the middle of the living room when he came back. His expression was a mixture of confusion and fascination.
‘‘Taeyong, this is my present to you.’‘ you said with a small voice, your nerves getting the better of you.
Closing your eyes, you started playing like the way Mark taught you. When the verse started, all of your nervousness from before faded away and your eyes fluttered open as you sang along. Just from the first few words you sang you could see how blown away Taeyong was. You gained even more confidence by seeing him just staring at you with an amazed grin on his face, like he was finding it hard to believe. When you got to the bridge, you deemed it the killing part because you were putting in more power to certain words and singing a bit higher, with more emotion. Taeyong continued watching you slightly dazed. When you finally finished, you stared at each other for a moment that seemed longer than it was. As if both of you were finding it hard to process what just happened. It was Taeyong who was quick to close the distance between you two and his lips were even quicker to meet yours.
Pulling back from the kiss he said;
‘‘Y/N I had no idea you could sing! This is crazy! How did I not know how talented you are!’‘ excitement and amazement was evident on his face.
‘‘Because I kinda hid it from you...’‘ you replied averting your eyes a bit.
‘‘You’re a real musician you know. And I only sing a little bit. I’m a total amateur.’‘ you continued.
He gave you a disapproving look and said; ‘’Nonsense. It was pretty amazing what you just did now. I think you are very talented. You can even play the guitar!’‘ he exclaimed.
‘’Well about that... I actually don’t know how to play the guitar... I’ve just been learning to play this one song for you for the past 3 weeks.’’ you admitted.
Eyes getting bigger once again he said; ‘’What? You mean you learned to play like this in only 3 weeks? And you learned it to sing to me?’’ smiling from ear to ear by the end of his sentence.
‘‘Yes, I learned it because I wanted to make you feel special for once.’‘ you replied back mirroring his smile.
Taeyong responded by tilting your chin up and connected his lips with yours. He was kissing you more passionately this time. Almost in a way to convey how you were making him feel. As the kiss got deeper by the minute he pulled back slowly to look deeply in your eyes.
‘‘I love you Y/N.’‘ he let out the breath he didn’t even realize he was holding and continued;
‘‘I haven’t said it until now because I didn’t want to burden you. I was worried of scaring you off. I thought you’d find it too early and the heaviness of those three words would ruin the playful, light-hearted connection we have going on. But I was wrong.’‘
‘‘I tried to show it through actions and thought it was enough. But right now, I realized it’s not enough. I am totally and utterly in love with you. So you’re stuck with me whether you like it or not.’‘ he concluded with a laugh.
Watching your boyfriend pouring his heart out to you with an intense passionate gaze was urging you to do the same.
‘‘Good. Because I’m totally and utterly in love with you too Lee Taeyong.’‘ you confessed chuckling a little, while holding him.
‘‘You know you raised the bar on the birthday surprises way higher now right?’‘ he said with a smirk, earning a light punch on his arm from you.
‘‘Maybe next year you could dance for me. I bet you’re good at dancing too.’‘ he suggested, expression turning devilish.
‘‘I’m not... But you can always teach me.’‘ you responded with a challenging smirk.
‘‘Right now, the only dance I want to do is the Devils Tango.’’ he said with a proud expression.
‘‘Taeyong! Oh my god, where did you learn that?’‘ you started laughing because it was ridiculous.
‘‘Come on Y/N you gotta admit it was kinda smooth. Doesn’t that mean se-’‘ he was about to say but you interrupted him by saying;
‘‘You won’t get any if you don’t stop talking about it like that though.’‘ trying to hide your laugh by turning back and walking away.
But your fake push & pull game was cut short when you suddenly found yourself in Taeyong’s arms being carried princess style.
‘‘I don’t think I can wait anymore.’‘ he said in urgency, lust evident in his eyes while carrying you to the bedroom.
Taeyong’s 25th birthday would surely be a time you would both remember.
