As I was enjoying the perfect weather, I probably watched these black ants for about 30 minutes as they did their ant things: grabbing big food bc they’re so strong, peekin out of their new entrance hole, digging (?), and grabbing yet more food to bring back! (Sorry for the noise in the bg; someone was doing lawnwork) They kept tickling my feet so I kept having to move them off and back on the ground!

Also some more ANTics including the annual symbiotic chewing the wax off of the peony buds so they can bloom under the cut!

Ant Hill - March 2024 You have to be really careful approaching large ant hills because there are several varieties of fire ants in Arizona. I took a couple of long lens images before approaching the nest. Image two shows how big this ant hill actually is. I was also able to zoom in enough to see that these were small black ants, which are safe. Image three is a closeup of the entrance showing the black ants. It is impressive to realize that each of the grains of rock and sand is bigger than the ant which carried it up to the surface and helped slowly build this massive ant hill. MWM

exciting find today!! I believe this is a Red-and-Black Ant Mimic, a species of jumping spider evolved to mimic Strobe ants (family Opisthopsis). While I dont have a positive ID, this female looks like she's mimicking the Black-Headed Strobe Ant (Opisthopsis rufithorax).

Ant mimic spiders (Salticids or otherwise) are so fascinating to me, but I rarely get to see them, let alone get a clear photo. This girl was moving around so quickly (also mimicking the quick, jagged movements of Strobe ants) and I didn't have my macro on me, so sorry for the photo quality! she's too cool not to share anyway imo :,)
