Top 15 Funniest Moments in Spider-Man Comic History (in my opinion)
1. Some of My Best Friends Are Black
Tumblr media
When She-Hulk tells Spider-Man that she can help him get back at J. Jonah Jameson for running his name through the mud in The Daily Bugle, it seems like the simplest court case in the world. All they have to do is show up, embarrass the editor in chief, and hope that no super villains attack during the proceedings.
This panel is great, not just because it shows that Spidey's wit is as sharp as ever, but it proves just how slimy Jameson really is.
2. I'm Summoning the Spiders
Tumblr media
Doesn't it make sense that Spider-Man should be able to control all of the spiders in the world? Or at least carry a bunch of little spiders in his pockets? That's what we would do if we were Spider-Man. This panel comes from one of the most chaotic and truly funny issues of Marvel Adventures: Spider-Man, where the wall crawler has to go head to head with Emma Frost, and a new super villain who may or may not be very good at his job. Also he's apparently never heard of Spider-Man.
3. Not Your Normal Fruit of the Loom
Tumblr media
It can be hard putting your life back together after a mad scientist swaps your consciousness for his in an attempt to further his existence while getting rid of his greatest nemesis. Not only do you have to explain that to your friends, but sometimes you also end up wearing web underwear that last for an indefinite amount of time. Those are just a few cons of being Spider-Man.
4. Why So Serious?
Tumblr media
When did Spider-Man start breaking the fourth wall like fellow Marvel hero, Deadpool? Honestly, this panel from Runaways #11 raises so many questions about the Marvel Universe. Why are there superhero movies in a world where there are already superheroes? Are there comic books? Does Peter Parker identify with Batman because his parents are also dead?
5. Avengers, Assemble!
Tumblr media
When Tony Stark decides to build out The Avengers in order to make the world safer than it already is with the standard team (not to mention Avengers West Coast but whatever), he reaches out to a few guys who should have been on the team a long time ago: Wolverine, Spider-Man, and The Falcon. Tony plays to all of their weaknesses, and if you've ever read a Spider-Man comic you know that Peter's is money.
Not only has he spent his entire life trying to support Aunt May, but depending on what series we're in he's got Mary Jane to think of as well. It's actually kind of crazy that Peter didn't become the world's greatest villain in issue 2 of The Amazing Spider-Man - the money's definitely better.
6. The Oddest Man Ever
Tumblr media
There's a lot going on in the New Avengers storyline "Siege", but to try and put it succinctly: Norman Osborn, Loki, and the Sentry want to take over Asgard (which is floating over Oklahoma), while also rebuilding Osborn's public persona as a helpful billionaire. While most of the Avengers are fighting the Sentry and Norman above the panhandle state, Spider-Man and Spider-Woman are staking out Osborn's office and bantering away like crazy.
Spider-Man, being the dork he is, delivers most of his lines like he's at a renaissance fair, and Spider-Woman takes it about as well as any woman would.
7. Great Superman Reference
Tumblr media
Oddly enough this is the second time a comic featuring your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man fighting the Juggernaut is popping up on this list. Maybe the overpowered baddie just brings out the comedy in the wall crawler. This Superman-referencing panel (is no one else bothered by the amount of DC comic references that Parker makes?) happens right up top when Spidey sees something fall out of the sky and into Central Park.
Unfortunately for Parker, it's not a baby from Krypton, but rather, the unstoppable Juggernaut.
8. A Luke/Yoda Kind of Thing
Tumblr media
At the onset of Avenging Spider-Man #1, Peter Parker works with the Avengers to fight giant robots when he finds out that a bunch of Moloids are attacking marathon runners in New York. Don't you hate it when that happens? Instead of catching a flight back to NYC on one of Tony Stark's sweet personal jets, the wall crawler has to ride back with Red Hulk - which is just about as good as a flight on Southwest.
9. Does It Bother Anyone Else That He Didn't Use a Hyphen?
Tumblr media
After Wolverine dies on the job, Spider-Man takes over teaching ethics at the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning to try and find a traitor in a six-part miniseries. Obviously, the wall crawler has more trouble teaching young mutants than he does tracking down the student surreptitiously working with Mr. Sinister.
If any of you were alive in the '80s then you remember that Peter Parker spent a brief tenure as a teacher at Midtown High but he lost that job due to his duties as Spider-Man, so it's no surprise that he's kind of terrible at teaching this "special" class.
10. Dylan Would Have a Problem With This
Tumblr media
Even though these panels come from Avenging Spider-Man #7, it still feels like classic Spidey. Isn't it great when you can open literally any issue of your favorite comic and expect that your favorite character is going to be as buoyant and silly as ever? This comic also hammers home the concept that even though Spider-Man might be the hardest working superhero in New York, he's still a bit of a pariah on the powered protagonist scene.
It also introduces a completely new type of fetish thanks to She-Hulk growing a cat tail.
11. With Great Power, There Must Come Great Responsibility - Get It Right
Tumblr media
Can you believe that all Miles Morales had to do to earn the respect of Peter Parker and the rest of The Avengers was single-handedly defeat Blackheart? That kid has it too easy. Thanks to having two different Spider-Men in this comic, there are so many jokes and that they need to be split up into different categories.
Pretty much everything that Peter and Miles say is hilarious, but the moment when Parker essentially breaks the fourth wall to correct everyone whose been misquoting his uncle Ben for the last few years has to be the best of this joke cavalcade.
12. Ultron Is Such a Noob
Tumblr media
Marvel Adventures is great because the writers have a chance to throw any character that they want into a comic for a one-and-done storyline and it makes for really fun reads. The stories are meant for younger readers, but that shouldn't alienate older readers. Most of the Spider-Man quips feel like they were written by Joss Whedon on a particularly good day, and this burn on Ultron is especially Buffyesque.
13. He Cannot Speak English Good Like We Do
Tumblr media
In the '80s, Spider-Man was drafted to help defeat the Juggernaut and save Madam Web (who was in a coma at the time), and even though the spirit is willing, Parker's flesh is weak. Or weaker than Juggernaut's. At least the webhead managed to get some great grammar jokes out. The two comics where Spidey brawls with Juggernaut, Amazing Spider-Man #229 and #230, can be pricey, but if you want to read the story it exists in a hardcover collection of Spider-Man stories from the '80s.
14. It's Just a Kiss
Tumblr media
One variant cover to rule them all. One variant cover to find them. One variant cover to bring them all and in the darkness bind them. But seriously folks, how was this not the main cover of Spidey and the mercenary with a mouth's 2016 outing? One of the coolest things about all of the covers in this series are the constantly changing logos that act as one more comedic device in the gang's arsenal.
15. How About Some Credit Where It's Due?
Tumblr media
If you didn't know, for about a year from 2013 to 2014 Doctor Octopus's mind was inside of Peter Parker's body, and he turned the already sardonic character of Spider-Man into kind of a dick. So when he meets Nova, the 15-year-old intergalactic superhero (long story!), it makes total sense why he'd be annoyed. So rather than getting thanked for his hard work, he gets to hang out with a kid that's still too young to even drive.
