it's a little bit sad how absent babs is from most batfam content considering she was literally one of two headliners on the original 1975 batfam run

Yes the killing joke is misogynist. That's been done to death.
Would erasing the killing joke erase the misogyny in it? I suppose. But you'd also be erasing Oracle. Which was the direct and original counter to the killing joke. You would be erasing the fact that the most influential and dangerous person in DCs earth being a disabled woman.
Would you get her back as batgirl? Yes. But at what cost? The erasure of the bat girls that come after.
Cassandra Cain a compelling well written disabled woman with a deep inner voice swept under the rug.
Stephanie Brown a compelling strong willed character who never cowtoes to Bruce's bs. Someone whos batgirl run, to my understanding, was a prolonged love letter to the character and apology to how she was treated and would continue to be treated by executives.
barbra gordon batgirl is a place holder, a road block against better characters and a shackle against the strong character she could no should be

Somehow I still see people say Barbara Gordon being Batgirl is feminist when her being Batgirl hasn’t actually been feminist since the 80s.
The only way Babs has been Batgirl after the 80s, is by:
Destroying two decades worth of her character development.
Diminishing her very powerful role as an influential and accomplished paraplegic woman in the DCU.
Shoving aside two other female characters (Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown).
De-ageing her/treating her like she is significantly younger than she should be.
None of that is feminist. Continuing to have Babs as Batgirl does not help women’s representation. She was already representation by being Oracle (disability does not make her bad representation of women!). She had her own role outside of Batgirl that was very successful. There were other Batgirls after her who were Batgirl representation. Cassandra had the first Batgirl solo series ever!
To have Babs as Batgirl, you must first do so much damage to her character and others that it cannot be called feminism.

1/12 for @yearoftheotpevent! I picked Superbat (Karababs edition) because they’re so endearing in Crisis On Infinite Earths (and also to make myself learn to draw wheelchairs). I’m not sure I’ll be able to get through all of them, but hopefully a good chunk of them! For September, I went with Historical AU... Bombshells counts, right? Hated the comic but the designs slapped and I wanted to draw them.
The page keeps not being big enough to draw all of Babs and her chair, though! Might need to try even bigger paper.
[Image ID: A copic marker illustration of Kara Zor-El and Barbara Gordon in their respective Bombshells outfits. Kara is a skinny lighter skinned black woman with blonde hair wearing a blue dress with a thick red belt and a red scarf wearing blue gloves with yellow trim. She sits on Barbara’s lap, her face away from  as Barbara leans back in her wheelchair, smiling dramatically and showing vampire teeth. Barbara has her arms wrapped around Kara for support. Barbara’s a chubby, somewhat tan redhead with her hair wrapped up in a messy bun. Her eyes are bright red, and she wears black goggles with yellow trim and pale gray lenses on her forehead. She wears a black side cloak over her left shoulder and a mostly orange and black breastplate with a yellow bat emblem over the boobs. She has black lipstick. The background is yellow. END ID.]

everytime i feel mildly disappointed with batgirls i remind myself that it's not a miniseries it's an ongoing and as such there's room for it to get better after this arc
even if right now it's not like. my favourite comic in the world, it's only one arc in and feels a bit like it's still trying to find the right balance. i have other issues with the comic at times but generally i think it's main problem atm is that it's messy. but, as an ongoing, it has time to improve and get better and i really hope it can do that bc. i want the characters i really like to get a series i really like hahaha. so, holding out hope here

I mean, the funny thing is, this isn't classic Batgirl either. They also did the standard (and always gross) "women in comics age backward" thing. And she didn't date Dick until she was Oracle; in fact, post-Crisis he barely knew her before returning to Gotham. So what DC is trying for with able-bodied Babs is a Babs who never existed. So, you know, all nostalgia ever.
I definitely agree they failed on even making her work as a classic Batgirl Babs. I like pre-Oracle Babs as Batgirl just fine (I enjoy her pre-crisis stuff but also I love Kelley Puckett’s post crisis one-shots about her) and it feels completely different IMO even apart from the huge ableism in Post-Flashpoint Babsgirl. Though to be fair I haven’t done a very extensive reading of modern Babsgirl yet, only bits and pieces.
Post crisis did de-age Babs too, but I think it worked better because she was still treated as a fully grown adult the entire time anyway so it didn’t change much, functionally, about her—they even kept many of her achievements by instead having her get them at a younger age. This doesn’t seem to quite be true for how New 52 handled it, but again my reading is more sparse for post flashpoint Babs so far.
However, I’m gonna have to disagree with you on them barely knowing each other. They don’t appear in each other’s main comics while Dick is with the New (Teen) Titans and Babs is with Suicide Squad, so we could assume that was a distant period for them, but I don’t think that means they barely knew each other. Pretty much every other comic with them during Post Crisis seems to suggest that their pre-Crisis Batgirl-Robin friendship carried over (although altered to fit post Crisis, like Babs being younger; and at least one writer did retcon them dating a little but most show Dick having a crush).
Even if we ignore the Batgirl: Year One retelling, they both already knew each others identities well during Batman: Prodigal (which I’m pretty sure is the first time they actually talk to each other on panel in post-Crisis), and that would match them figuring out each other’s identities as Robin & Batgirl like in pre-Crisis. So it wouldn’t make sense to assume they barely knew each other. It seems more likely they just grew distant while they were on NTT/Suicide Squad, then got closer again when they both returned to the Batfamily in the 90s.
