not so silent nights and broken bells
read it on the AO3 at https://archiveofourown.org/works/51957232 by wickedsmille If there’s one thing he cannot stand, he absolutely abhors, it’s the holiday season. It comes with the materialistic drive to buy more, buy bigger, to outdo every other Tom, Dick and Harry. reading update
what's up gamers, the odds are very slim that I'll be finishing another book before November is over, so let's do a roundup! I've you've been following me literally at all you probably saw me reblog my public shame TBR list at some point, and now we get the #reviews.
what have I been reading?
Histories of the Transgender Child (Jules Gill-Peterson, 2018) - this book is a really incredible piece of historical research, exploring the existence of transgender and gender non-conforming children in the first half of the 21st century. Gill-Peterson threads a great needle of both laying out ways in which trans identity and specifically trans youth were understood in the early decades of trans healthcare, establishing that young transgender people are in no way a modern phenomenon, while also making the strong case that trans youth have been able to exist without complication or medical intervention throughout American history. It's an engrossing medical history, and I would say intensely valuable to anyone who has a vested interest in protecting trans kids' right to autonomy and joy.
Batman: Bruce Wayne - Murderer? (Greg Rucka et al, 2002) - this, to me, is peak Batfamily content. everyone is miserable and nobody is communicating about it because they're all too depressed and bitchy. Bruce gets accused of murder and sent to prison and he decides the only reasonable thing to do is break out and never be Bruce Wayne again, with seemingly no concern about how horrific the consequences will be for his family as long as he gets to keep being Batman. the dysfunction is... fucking delicious. cannot WAIT to read Bruce Wayne: Fugitive, I must know how Brucie baby gets himself out of this one. also, hey, have I mentioned that I miss Babs as Oracle every single day? god, she's just... she's so much cooler as Oracle.
Alive at the End of the World (Saeed Jones, 2022) - Jones is so so so so so so SO good at writing layers of pain and hurt into his poetry. the imagery of apocalypse and protest is infinitely striking, and I was particularly shaken by the recurring series within the book that ended each segment, in which Jones finds himself in his apartment after a reading speaking with a doppelganger who turns out to be his own personified pain. chills!!!! CHILLS!!!!
Elatsoe (Darcie Little Badger, 2020) - I wanted to make a point of reading something a little lighter, because we've been a little #heavy lately, and Little Badger's debut YA novel was perfect for that. while Elatsoe isn't what I'd call flawless - in particular, I have to say that the main characters seem VERY young for 17 year olds, feeling more like middle readers protagonists in most ways - it's an extremely charming book with a lot of really cool ideas. the world is one very like ours but suffused with mythology; ghosts, vampires, and fairies are well-known facts of life integrated seamlessly into the story. it's very cool to see an urban fantasy where the protagonist's parents are totally in on the supernatural and fully supportive of the teen sleuthing without any sketchy ulterior motivations, and I think the tidbit that Lipan folks are able to banish vampires for coming into their home - the entirety of their ancestral lands - without an invitation is one of the coolest twists on vampire lore I've ever seen.
Nature Poem (Tommy Pico, 2017) - I LOVE Tommy Pico's epic poetry (that's a literary term, not an outdated compliment), and I read Nature Poem in what I believe is the way that was intended: all in one evening, still wearing a cute little bodycon dress, glitter, and fishnets after a Halloween party, a little tipsy. as always Pico's voice is impeccable, dry and witty and observant and so, so tired of so much bullshit. the preoccupation of this poem is the idea of nature, specifically writing a poem about it, and Pico's railing against the idea that white poets can write countless poems about nature and only be seen as writing a poem, while he, as a Kumeyaay man, can't write a poem about nature without it being seen as a woo woo magical Native American thing. but it's not just that; no Pico poem is every just one thing, but a smart and circling conversation to drive a point home. I still don't know if I'm liking poetry right but man I know I love Tommy Pico.
The Trouble With Normal: Sex, Politics, and the Ethics of Queer Life (Michael Warner, 1999) - full disclosure: I ordered this book in a feverish haze after it was recommended at a conference by a speaker who was so stupid hot that I nearly had a panic attack about it. we don't have time to unpack all that, but I will say that this was as eye-opening a read as nearly all historical queer texts are. the two things that jumped out at me most were 1.) Warner's well-written argument against the concept of marriage as a whole, with the then-ongoing fight for gay marriage necessarily included, and 2.) the scathing critiques of gay individuals who throw ~weird sexual deviant~ gays under the bus to further their own social standing. INSANE that that's still topical in 2022; can't wait to be quoting a 20+ year old book at people when the kink @ pride discourse starts in 2023.
A Dowry of Blood (S.T. Gibson, 2021) - that's right, it's the TikTok book about Dracula's brides being in a polycule! I figured with a description like that this was either going to be pretty good or bad in fun and interesting ways, and I wasn't disappointed at all. Dowry was a fast, fun read, with a heavy gothy ambiance all the way through. it carries more weight than expected by depicting Dracula himself as a surprisingly realistic abusive partner, a boyfriend from hell who keeps his partners on short leashes with a thinly-veiled threat of death if they ever displease him. if you like your vampires depressed, horny, and wrapped up in deeply unhealthy psychosexual mindgames you will LOVE this.
Into the Riverlands (Nghi Vo, 2022) - this is the latest novella in Vo's Singing Hills Cycle, which I cannot recommend enough to anyone. I didn't initially adore this entry quite as much as When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain or Empress of Salt and Fortune, I think because it felt less immersive. the Singing Hills Cycle tells stories within stories, framed by a cleric named Chih travelling to gather stories across the fictional kingdom in which they live. the first two novellas were much more immersive in their storytelling, and I think I missed having that in Into the Riverlands, but there was a certain reveal near the end that cast the whole thing in a very different light and made me like the setup a lot more. it's also worth noting that given the way this novella deals with larger-than-life martial artists and the way their legends are distorted across time, it reminded me VERY much of The Girl Who Kept Winter - a spectacularly fun read, one that I can't recommend enough.
The World We Make (N.K. Jemisin, 2022) - god DAMN, N.K. Jemisin! I was a little unsure about The City We Became, willing to rank it as my least favorite of Jemisin's books, but the sequel really knocked by socks off. I could hardly put it down, and I'm sad to see the duology ended already - if I'm being totally honest I think this book could easily have been fleshed into two for a trilogy, given how much capital-p-Plot is introduced, but I also really respect how much story Jemisin was able to so slicky introduce and resolve in under 400 pages here. on the whole this is a thriving, fast, fist-pumping love letter to New York City and the power of community in the face of all kinds of evil, and one of the few sequels I feel completely confident calling better than the original.

To Bite or Not to Bite
read it on AO3 at https://ift.tt/iCUnOSP by JpegDotJpeg “There’s my favorite bloodsucker.” Stephanie’s smile was blinding when he swung the front door open. “I’m your only bloodsucker,” Tim replied flatly. He waved at Stephanie’s mom as she drove past the large fountain in front of the manor and headed back down the drive before ushering Stephanie in and shutting the door. “How are the new pinchers coming in?” she asked. Then, without giving him the chance to actually respond, grabbed his face in both her hands and dug her thumbs into the hinges of his jaw prompting it to drop open. “Awww, they’re so cute! And tiny! Are you sure you’re going to be able to feed with those little things?” Tim batted her hands away, huffing. “Yes.” Words: 3805, Chapters: 1/1, Language: English Series: Part 1 of The Bat Boy Chronicles Fandoms: DCU, Batman - All Media Types Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Characters: Tim Drake, Bruce Wayne, Damian Wayne, Jason Todd, Stephanie Brown Relationships: Tim Drake & Bruce Wayne, Tim Drake & Stephanie Brown, Tim Drake & Damian Wayne, Tim Drake & Jason Todd Additional Tags: Urban Fantasy, Batfamily (DCU), Batfamily-centric (DCU), Domestic Batfamily (DCU), Batfamily Dynamics (DCU), Vampire!Tim, Demon!Damian, Werewolf!Jason, Blood, Blood Drinking, Fluff, Hurt/Comfort, Sickfic, Good Parents Jack Drake and Janet Drake read it on AO3 at https://ift.tt/iCUnOSP

Pretty much all of the Bat characters are being dumbed down in favor of Bruce. It's not even funny. This was why I was in favor for the JL to die but he's not even dead. he's just in a different world where everything is his perfect ideal fantasy. Once again Bruce wins while everyone is left to pick up the pieces.
I don't wish death on all the JL because a lot of them have gotten shafted to accommodate bruce having like 17 lame ass books or smth ridiculous going on right now, but like someone needs to take bruce out it's absurd at this point. i feel like people always blame the batfamily for taking up everything at DC and that's partially true, but so much of it is literally just bruce like skimming dc rn...
Batman '89
Batman
Batman/Catwoman
Batman/Superman: World's Finest
Batman: Beyond the White Knight
Batman: Killing Time
Batman: One Dark Knight
Batman: The Knight
Batman: Fortress
Batman: Urban Legends
like he's a title character in 10 different series that's so many and i'm literally only counting the ones where he's in the title like... bruh imagine how many characters could have solos/minis if he got erased from DC. a whole 10. my picks: Roy, Donna, Vic, Joey, Jamie (i don't read his stuff but he deserves it), Duke, Cass (I would not care if Batgirls got replaced by it tbh, and then they gave us a birds of prey with disabled Babs back), and the Aquafam, Arrowfam, and Flashfams can each have another book because why not

I’ve been thinking a lot about why I’m so invested in Jason Todd relative to the rest of the batfamily and I think it has a lot to do with how much potential I see in the character for growth.
Most of the members of the batfam are relatively static in their commitment to heroism. And because they are DC comics characters, we can expect that they will be indulging their respective hero complexes in perpetuity. They are Good Guys who always fight Bad Guys. They have lines they will and will not cross, shy of being pushed over the edge.
But Jason Todd has never truly achieved an ideological stasis. A large part of that is inconsistencies in how he has been written (is he a reductive male power fantasy or a victim turned vindicator? Is he a soulless villain or a sympathetic antihero? Depends on how any given writer is feeling). But another aspect is that Jason’s real time tenure with the Red Hood mantle has been relatively short (17 years or so) in contrast to Bruce Wayne as Batman (80+ years), Barbara Gordon as Batgirl (50+ years), Dick Grayson as Nightwing (nearly 40 years), or Tim Drake as Robin (30+ years). Writing-wise there’s just a lot of untrodden territory for Jason in terms of who he is and what he stands for relative to his counterparts.
The way I see it, DC has two main paths forward: they can either continue to have Jason align himself more closely with the rest of the Bats each passing decade until he’s a true clean cut hero. Or he can spend eternity in anti-hero limbo, constantly taking one step forward and two steps back in terms of him developing a moral code. And regardless of which path DC takes (or how they split the difference) at some point the character’s moral arc will feel exhausted. Maybe to some he already does.
But right now I see Jason as a character positioned so uniquely on the precipice of self-definition. And as a result, I think storylines like “Cheer” in Batman: Urban Legends or the direction of the character in Task Force Z, which treat Jason as a twenty-something with an evolving sense of his place in the chaotic world that he’s found himself cemented in, are the character at his best. Right now Jason is not using guns (and given the American cultural context around gun violence at this moment, I think that having him moving away from that is really necessary and important and honestly should have happened earlier). He is also more broadly committed to using non-lethal means, but is unsure of what protecting people actually looks like beyond that.
Recently he said to Bruce:
“I want something more than fighting punk purse snatchers in alleys, what year is it? Seriously, beating up drug addicts and mentally ill people all night...who are we helping?”
- Task Force Z #4
Red Hood has always been the most compelling to me when he acts as an ideological foil to Batman rather than a vendetta-based antagonist. Someone who gets to question the entire moral paradigm of what Batman stands for because he sees himself as standing outside of it.
All this to say: at the moment, Jason’s uncertainty about who he is and who he fights for just reads to me as a uniquely engaging part of the larger Batman mythos and I’m sincerely invested in seeing what’s next for him

Whats your perfect end game relationship between Jason and the bats? Ignoring dc’s ability to do proper development of it, how would you like their story to end? And then, how would you like the canon relationship to end? I don’t know if I’m being clear, but basically your personal fantasy vs making most of canon
This is not going to be anything groundbreaking, but I want Jason to separate himself from the 'fam' part of Batfam.
But don't get me wrong. I see all these posts about how Jason doesn't deserve to be in Batfam because he kills, or in other ways not good enough. Because he shot Damian or beat up Tim. Because Cass would have never be able to accept him. Because.... Ultimately, what I believe is going on with these posts, is people don't like him as a character and don't like him interacting with their character, or even having more 'screentime' than theirs, or any 'screentime' at all.
That's not why I don't want him with Batfam.
Family part of Batfamily is pretty much a fandom concoction; if it's in comics from the last ten years or so, it's fanservice with little to no build-up or consequences. It's not just Jason; I see, like, posts with panels from recent Robin - i couldn't even bring myself to read it because it made me feel very tired. I don't think Dick sending Damian on his way to participate in murder competition is in any way sweet... But hey, with pretty much everyone else, there is a chance that DC can make them a family without rewriting their character to make them worse.
Which is what happens with Jason almost in most Batfam stories. Hey, Urban Legends? They dumbed him down to prop Bruce. They write him as still deeply yearning for familial affection from people he either doesn't actually know, has poor relationship with, who he hurt and it was never dealt with on page, or who hurt him - but that was okay because it was his fault. Yes, RHATO #25, I am talking about you.
At first, I really sympathized with that. Because it's very common, and something I was in some ways still struggling, at the time. But DC doesn't allow him to grow past that, which is frustrating. At some point, you want to see a person who escaped dysfunctional family, but managed to build new long-lasting ties and healthier relationship with people. But DC gives and DC takes away - Roy and Kory are not with him anymore, neither Artemis and Biz, and he's left, once again, to strive for recognition and acceptance of someone who would never accept him as is.
So, I want him out of Batfam. He can keep doing the Outlaws thing, or join other teams, or even let him, I dunno, marry Roy and join Arrow fam and have a very awkward conversation with Mia - or get him a ring to join Lanterns, or heck, team him up with Talia, for real this time! But yeah, Batfam is not good for him, from the narrative perspective. I said what I said.
While I think there's nothing in canon that would make it (Jason leaving Batfam) impossible, I think DC is going to milk Jason&Batfam for a long while still. Because that's a safe choice, because a lot of fans really loved BUL, because because because. The best I could hope for in canon, is for him not to lose his edge (not edginess!) when he is written with other Batfam characters. And maybe some actual on-page development? A road trip with Steph, a two-people con with Cass, an annual where Jason and Damian just hang out and talk about their dad problems and mom problems and sibling problems and friends, and vigilantism, and how being Robin affected them in all the best and worst ways... Thinking about it, add Stephanie to this one too.
Like, if they try to fit the square peg in a round hole, at least they should make an effort. Which, thinking about it, is also out of realm of possibility. So... Probably, best case scenario if he's still competent during Batfam team ups, and Batfam isn't outright derisive of him.

Revenant!Jason being on watch for some reason (stakeout? disaster scenario? dangerous pocket-dimension?) with one of his family members. They wake up the next morning, and are like, “WTF, Jay, why didn’t you wake me up for my shift?!”
Jason: “You needed your sleep.”
(Let’s say) Dick: “So do you! What happens when you crash, Jay? What happens if you get too tired and miss something? We sleep in shifts for a reason!”
Jason: “No point when I don’t need sleep.”
Dick: “What?”
Jason: “Honestly, I don’t even think I can anymore.”
Dick: “What?!?”
Jason: “Dickie. I’m dead.
Jason: “I haven’t slept since I crawled out of my grave.”
Dick: “Well that’s... useful?”
Jason, grinning: “Do you have any idea how much reading I’ve caught up on since coming back? Completely makes up for what I missed during my dirt nap.”
Dick: “Good for you, you giant nerd. Moving on...”

Check out the Guide if you want to know more about how my whump writing is organized.

As always, if you need me to tag anything, let me know.

Bloody Teeth in a Concrete Jungle
by CrouchingTiger28 "You see, Jason." Wayne explained, "I have my car enchanted to only let my soulbound through the wards." Jason blinked, confused at where the conversation had gone. He hadn't gotten to any warded cars in… ever, actually. None except the Batmobile. --- Or: In a world with far more magical than is typical, Bruce is a magical creature whose only ability is collecting soul ties to whoever the universe decides he should. He'd appreciate it if his soulbound, most of whom are children, were a little less inclined to follow in his crime-fighting footsteps. If it weren't for his newfound immortality, he'd be getting gray hairs.
