sorry for the vent, but nothing annoys me more than people who don't read the comics because they claim they don't want to read inconsistent characterization. Just say you're too attached to the fandom versions of the characters! You don't want to find out what they are actually like!! Being inconsistent with what you like is not the same as being inconsistent!

Because, at the end of the day, these people don't know if the stories are inconsistent because they don't actually know the characters, they haven't read the context, and they don't know how the events in the story came to be. These characters have been around for decades. They've "done" almost everything under the sun. If someone's only heard a laundry list of things they've done (usually told by a pretty biased 3rd party, myself included) then of course the actions are going to sound inconsistent. The connecting tissue of how they got from point A to point B is the entire point of a story.

I think this urks me so much because it’s always couched in this haughty, "it's impossible to read all of the comics and they’re not good enough to try" language, which for one thing, is just such a dismissive attitude of something they claim to love. But the other thing is that, so often, these people love to talk or write about specific comic events. If all they're writing about is the batfam going for a day at Disneyland, then yeah, they don't need to read anything. But if they're specifically writing a fic to address, like...Tim and Jason's fight at Titans Tower, or Bruce's return from the timestream, especially in a “fix-it” framing, and they can't be bothered to read the *40 pages of pictures where that happens*....what is this manufactured outrage? Are they just trying to be angry about something that never happened? Are they so obsessed with the canon being wrong that they can't give the thing they're mad at a chance to be right?

Rules

We'll have a preliminary round to see whether characters are prominent, lesser known, or actually obscure members of the Batfam. (There's also an option to vote them out.) So don't worry about whether your character is actually obscure!

Feel free to submit characters or send asks requesting them, but please include images when you do. (Either official images or your own fanart; don't send other people's art.)

Due to the nature of this bracket, I don't know lots of characters, so please include their full names (if possible) and any prominent codenames they've used.

Feel free to submit propaganda for characters that have already been entered into the competition, too.

You can suggest any DC character, but they're probably going to get voted out if they're borderline. I do still want to see who you come up with.

I guess you can suggest characters that aren't from DC but I doubt they'll get much traction? (But I guess there are a few popular crossovers, so who knows.)

Don't be hostile to characters, even once they go head to head. This includes characters you dislike. This includes characters you think are not important.

Don't be hostile to each other, either. Don't accuse other people of not knowing/understanding the canon. People disagree on definitions and that's okay. That's why it's supposed to be fun to vote on these things.

This includes debating politics or fandom wank. This is for celebrating characters we like, not dunking on other people's blorbos, even the popular ones.

Please don't be hostile to writers/artists either. I like a lot of the ones you don't and vice versa, I'm sure.

You're allowed to vote Bruce out. I think it's funny, too.

Leave propaganda in the notes like you do for all brackets! I'd especially love to know how you define the Batfamily and why you do or don't include characters in it!

How do you choose images? I pick an image where the character is in costume (if possible) in a style that I like or find iconic. For submissions, I just use whatever picture the submitter included (sometimes cropped), unless I already had something specific in mind for that character.

Submissions are closed unless you're resending something. I have a couple of times seen a notification pop up and disappear, which might be a glitch, or might mean that one of us has blocked each other on our mains. I just saw a rude, stupid fucking comment on some lovely JayDick art and I spent a solid hour trying to leave an educational response (with some choice profane namecalling) and I don’t know what’s going on but the internet decided I was the one person not allowed to leave mean responses, even if it was in defense of someone else.

Anywho, for reasons that totally have nothing to do with that comment, I’d like to remind everyone again that DC has made it crystal fucking clear how many kids Bruce has.

I’m not gonna dive into the long version about how there are three different continuities, one where Jason is the only one adopted, one whereJason is not adopted but Dick and Tim are adopted as sentimental gestures (Dick when he’s like 26 and firmly an adult), and one where none of them are.

I could go into that. Or I could just remind everyone that this is official promotional material that dc released for the current continuity, and let them tell you in their own words...

Some of you really needed that clarification.

It’s fine to want/headcanon/pretend they’re a family in whatever extremely narrow and exclusive way you define that, but don’t deliberately go into ship tags to be a cunt. Stay in your fucking lane.

Trying hard to enjoy a well-written fic, but the Tim woobification is borderline painful. Author is so mad at every single character who ever gave Tim a boo-boo in canon they had to transplant him into an entirely new universe.

I adore my boy as much as anybody, but this level of projecting only on one single character just to nurse a giant victim complex is why Tim stans give me a fucking migraine.

So like real talk when Tim comes back they're most definitely not giving him the Titans back, right? Like I do not see it happening at all and it breaks my heart all over again for Tim. He's already lost so much and this is not going to help him at all.

I think the important part of this is to remember it’s not his team.

Honestly, I don’t mind in the slightest if Tim doesn’t get the Titans back. He’s done his run with them, and beyond that it’s not even his team anymore. If the reboot never happened, I would be surprised if Tim was still leading the Teen Titans, because I think after maybe another year, if that, he would have naturally passed the mantle of leader down to Damian. I WISH Damian was able to get his own team and not just the same recycled characters they keep using (minus new Kid Flash of course). Because, honestly, seeing Damian with a group of new kids his own age, learning together, being dumb teenagers and suffering together like in Teen Titans vol. 3? Amazing!

What’s important for Tim and what was always important regarding the Titans for him were his friends. I think people forget a lot about that; how Tim’s character essentially grew up and was heavily defined by the fact that he always had a rag-tag bunch of other teens surrounding him.

Tim doesn’t need the Teen Titans back, he needs his friends. He need Kon and Bart and Cassie. I want him to get them and grab up some of the other throw away forgotten teenage heroes they worked with and make their own mark and a new team. I’ve heard some people saying Tim creating a new reincarnation of the Outsiders would be cool and I could see that being done pretty well (as long as Bruce stays out of it HA!).

But you just have to remember, Anon, for Tim it’s never been about the team or title, it’s always been about the people he’s with in it. So lets not give Tim the Titans again, lets just give him actual friends and relationships again.

Goodness gracious me, would you look at all that ‘stolen’ content...

Oh my god, you guys. I’m so tired of DC stealing everyone else’s stories/traits/friends/love interests and giving them to Dick.

I can’t believe DC stole Bruce’s whole background and gave it to Dick. The murdered parents inspiring a life of fighting crime was Bruce’s thing first.

Dick even gets his love interests sometimes. Like Vicki and Selina. And the whole dating villains in general was done by Bruce first. Just one more thing they’ve stolen from him.

The Batman mantle wasn’t Dick’s to take. Bruce explicitly told Dick he didn’t want him to be Batman. I can’t believe Dick would just steal Bruce’s legacy like that.

And going all the way back to Jason’s pre-crisis origins to have Dick’s circus parents be shot in current canon is just unnecessary and totally disrespectful.

Speaking of disrespecting Jason, I can’t believe DC stole dying from Jason and gave it to Dick. That’s like Jason’s one big story. So rude.

I can’t believe DC stole Conner from Tim and gave him to Dick in YJ.
