The three small taps on your front door were quiet. You looked over across the room, checking on Grim and seeing if he heard. He was sound asleep, splayed out on the recliner and dead to the world it seemed. You quietly chuckled at the sight; he was much cuter when he was asleep and not giving you attitude. You felt bad for not inviting him out with you, but this was the night that you wanted to enjoy- without a pet cat trailing behind you every step.
You quietly opened the door, peaking through the crack outside. Ruggie stood there staring up at the night sky, not noticing you opened the door yet. His messy bangs were pushed back from the Savanaclaw bandana he was wearing. He was wearing a yellow hoodie with a denim jacket over it to double layer for the chilly autumn night. His hands were tucked into the pockets of his dark joggers; his black and white Adidas completing his attire for the evening.
His ear twitched as you opened the door more. His gaze turned to you with a grin, his fangs almost glowing in the moonlight. “Are you ready to go?” he whispered to you, trying to peek around the door to check for Grim. “Yes, we can go. He’s knocked out,” you whispered back as you were coming out the door. Ruggie politely stopped you with his hand, looking you up and down. “Go grab your jacket, I don’t want you to be cold,” he said quietly. You looked at your clothes. You had just thrown on a raggedy tee shirt, jeans, and sneakers. You forgot that the weather might get too cold.
“Right…” you said coyly. You turned around slowly to go back in Ramshackle, trying to avoid the places in the floorboard you knew would creak. Your eyes widened as you saw where your jacket was- under Grim. You turned around to look at Ruggie, a terrified look on your face. You mouthed the words “it’s under Grim” and pointed at the recliner. Ruggie held back a laugh, putting up his hands as if to say “hold on” as he came inside.
Ruggie’s footsteps were light, you couldn’t even hear him as he walked across the room. He grabbed your jacket, slowly pulling it from under Grim. “nnyyyaa…,” Grim mumbled in his sleep as he stretched, moving enough for Ruggie to get the jacket with ease. Ruggie walked back over to you, handing you your jacket. “Easy peasy,” he whispered with a smile.
You both made your way outside as you threw your jacket on. Ruggie had invited you to Savanaclaw for a bonfire they were hosting. You had never been to the Savanaclaw dorm yet. You weren’t sure what to expect, but you were with Ruggie which made you feel better. He always knew how to make you feel better.
You two walked holding hands on your way to his dorm, his smile never fading from his face. “What are you grinning about, Rug?” you said playfully as you bumped your side into his. Ruggie laughed as he looked at you by his side. “I’m just excited to be able to show you off; the guys only ever get to hear stories about you. But tonight I get to show them all who is mine,” he purred, his smile beaming in the lowlight.
He looked so happy to have you by his side, you had never seen him this excited for something. You two had been officially dating for a few weeks now after Ruggie told you he finally had approval from Leona. He had told you before how strict Leona was when it came to him picking a partner. Leona acted cold and distant, but he did actually care about the ones around him. He didn’t want Ruggie to be with someone he thought was a lunatic. You would’ve never been invited to this bonfire if Leona wasn’t okay with it.
Ruggie said he wasn’t sure what made Leona become so approving of your relationship, but you had an idea. Floyd had casually mentioned that he was looking into you for Leona before changing the subject to something else. You assumed Leona had recruited the Octatrio to find out more information about you. Lord knows that between the twins and Azul, it wasn’t a hard feat to accomplish.
You thought the strictness was weird. Why couldn’t Ruggie date who he wanted? Why did Leona care so much? But you also appreciated it. It made you feel a little different about the coarse, lion prince.
The two of you got to the Hall of Mirrors. What a sight, you thought to yourself. It was rare you got to come into the Hall of Mirrors; you didn’t exactly visit the other dorms that much. Your few friends you had made at Night Raven College always ended up at Ramshackle with you it felt like.
Ruggie led you to the Savanaclaw mirror. He turned towards you, taking steps backwards into the mirror. He smiled at you as you both found your way at the Savanaclaw dorm. The light from the bonfire in a side yard was visible from the dorm entrance, you figured that was one big fire they had going back there. The smell of food being grilled filled the air, exciting your senses. “You guys are grilling food, too?” you said as you sniffed the air.
Ruggie took a whiff of the night air as well, you could see his ears flick as he inhaled. “Yeah, it smells like ribs and steaks. We always have grilled meats and veggies on bonfire nights,” he laughed as he started pulling your arm in his direction. Getting closer to the side yard, you could hear the sounds of people laughing and talking. It seemed like everyone was really enjoying themselves.
Voices shouted as Ruggie and you walked through the gate into the yard. “Ruggie!!” they all chanted, excited for him to finally arrive at the bonfire. Ruggie smiled and waved to them all, as he still held your hand tightly. “Ruggie!” you heard someone say in an assertive tone. You saw Leona standing by the grill, his outfit almost comical. He was standing in jeans and a Savanaclaw tee shirt, but wore a pink apron that said “Grill Daddy'' across the chest. You wanted to laugh but the look Ruggie gave you told you not to even think about it.
You shaked off the laugh, looking around the side yard. All the Savanaclaw members were playing games, laughing and chatting, making s’mores by the large bonfire. You could make out a few familiar faces of some of the members who were in your classes. You recognized Jack by the bonfire, seeing his ears and bushy tail silhouetted in front of the fire’s light.
“What’s up, Leona?” Ruggie said, giving your hand a light squeeze as he pulled you a little closer to him. “This is [Y/N], my other half,” he said as he smiled looking at you. His smile reminded you of one a small kid would have when he shows off a coloring page to someone, it was nothing but a smile full of innocent pride. “Jack needs help at the fire, hop to it,” Leona grumbled to him. Ruggie looked at you, still holding your hand as he started to walk towards the fire.
“Hold on now, [Y/N],” Leona said, stopping you. Ruggie looked at Leona, eyes wide and begging him not to be a shithead to you. “Do you want ribs or steak? We can bring you a plate,” Leona said in a sweet tone. It was the first time you ever heard him say anything in a nicer voice than barking orders at someone. “Uhh, steak please, I like steak more,” you said quickly, feeling like all eyes were on you making you feel pressured to answer.
“Haha, okay. I will get right to it. I’ll have one of the guys bring it over to you. Ruggie, do you want your usual?” he said, his fangs peaking through his smile. “Shishishi, yes, please and thank you,” Ruggie said as he pulled you towards the fire. “Does Leona always grill at the bonfires?” you asked. “Yeah, he does, he thinks no one can grill as good as him and no one complains,” he laughed. “Does he..,” you started to ask. Ruggie shook his head, smiling as he looked over to you. “Yes, every time. He doesn’t grill without putting it on.”
The fire was huge, but not as big as the light around it made it seem. You could see Jack moving the firewood around the fire, chucking hefty pieces into it to keep it burning and tossing other pieces to the side. “Jack, hey,” Ruggie waved him over as you both approached the fire. Ruggie wrapped his arm around you, giving Jack a huge grin as he spoke. “Jackie boy, this is [Y/N]. The love of my life,” he said beaming. You turned quickly to look at him as he said the love of my life. You sighed as you looked at Jack and gave a friendly smile.
“Ruggie.. I know who they are, we have like two classes together, you doof. Did Leona tell you to come over here?” Jack said with a grumble. Ruggie took his arm from around you. “Yeah, he said you needed help. What can I do?” Ruggie asked sincerely. He was always willing to help, whatever it may be that was needed. You knew he would do anything for his dorm members; he always told you they were basically his family since he didn’t really have anyone besides his grandmother growing up. He thought very highly of his dorm mates.
“There are all these damp wood pieces, so I can’t use them for the fire. Can you go get more cut wood from the back while I keep the fire from getting out of hand?” Jack huffed. “I mean sure, I can man the fire if you want to go get them instead?” Ruggie suggested. Jack immediately came back with “No.” Ruggie was taken aback by his abrupt response. He turned to you and gestured to the log on the ground, the one they used frequently to sit around the fire. “Wait here, I’ll be right back,” he said to you as he patted your head.
He turned around and glanced at Jack, a harsh expression on his face. “Don’t worry, he’s not actually mean. He just looks scary, he’s like a puppy I swear,” he said reassuringly. You had classes with Jack, that was true, but you always felt like Jack hated you. He never cared for your silly jokes and was pretty straight forward, which made him come off as an ass sometimes. But Ruggie wouldn’t lie to you, maybe under Jack’s hard exterior was the giant puppy Ruggie said there was.
You watched Ruggie leave you alone, your eyes wandering around to everything around you. Jack was pushing blocks of wood in the fire around with a thick stick. “I’m glad Leona finally let Ruggie and you officially date,” Jack said as he turned back at you. He gave a soft smile, something very different from his typical scowl you saw every day in class. “I am glad too,” you said quietly, fidgeting with the bark on the log you sat on.
Jack gave a hearty laugh. “No seriously, you should have seen Ruggie when Leona first told him it wasn’t happening. He was so sad, just moping around through the dorms every day until Leona told him it was okay.” You thought about Ruggie being sad because you two couldn’t date, all because Leona said so. Jack continued to push the blocks around, adding another into the fire this time. “I can tell he has been much happier with you by his side. I know I’m a year younger than him, but I still want the guy to be happy. He is way more tolerable when he is cracking jokes and playing pranks than when he is sad and depressed all the time.”
You looked at the ground and smiled. It was nice being told that the happiness you gave to Ruggie was noticeable to other people. About that time, you heard Ruggie call out to Jack from behind you. “You think this is enough wood or what, shishishi,” he said jokingly. You and Jack both turned around to see Ruggie’s arms full of chopped wood. Ruggie’s wide, fanged grin coming across his face as you looked at him.
“Yeah, lover boy, that’s enough,” Jack said as he grabbed the wood from Ruggie’s arms. Ruggie plopped himself beside you, rubbing your thigh with his hand. “Hey-,” he almost screamed. “Do you like s’mores? We have all the fixing’ for ‘em.” You did love s’mores, a lot actually. It was your favorite fall treat back in your world. “I looove s’mores,” you said with a big smile. Ruggie’s ears flicked again as you responded excitedly. You could feel Jack’s eyes on you both, watching how you both interact with each other. You heard him chuckle under his breath as Ruggie rushed to grab the s’mores stuff that was on the other side of the fire.
Ruggie came back and handed you a metal skewer with a handle at the end. You held it by the handle, watching him happily stick two marshmallows on the pointed end of it for you. He gave you a cheeky smile as he stuck two on his own skewer. The log was close enough to the fire that you both only had to extend your arm out a little bit for the marshmallows to be in the fire.
You scooted closer to Ruggie, wanting to just be as close to him as possible at all times. The fire may give off warmth, but Ruggie’s personality was like a heater. He made you feel warm inside just by being in the same room as you. You were lost in your thoughts about him, daydreaming about his gray blue eyes lovingly looking at you. “Woah, woah, woah~” Ruggie shouted as he grabbed your skewer out of your hands, your marshmallows burning to a crisp and crumbling into the ash of the fire.
You forgot all about them, you didn’t really know how to explain yourself so you just apologized. “I’m sorry, I was lost in my thoughts.. Can I get two more? Please?” you said with a fake smile, sad you just ruined two perfectly good marshmallows. “How about,” Ruggie said, handing you his skewer with his perfectly roasted marshmallows. “You take one of mine and I’ll make two more for us to share?” He offered. You obliged, grabbing the graham crackers and chocolates to make your s’mores. You figured you would make the two on his skewer while he roasted the ones on yours for you.
“Do you want regular chocolate or the cookies n’ cream chocolate?” you asked, holding up a small bar of each one. Ruggie made a thinking face, raising his brow like he was contemplating the answer as if his life depended on it. “Let’s go with cookies n’ cream, very tasty, shishishi,” he laughed. He pulled the other two marshmallows out of the fire as you arranged the cookies n’ cream s’mores. “How’d you get them so nice and golden? I always mess it up,” you pouted.
Ruggie looked at you in amusement, raising his eyebrows at your pouting. “I have you know, you are dating the best, NO, the greatest s’mores maker in all the land,” he snickered. “Oh? Am I?” you said in disbelief. Ruggie hummed softly as he stacked the regular milk chocolate bars on the marshmallows. “Yeah, you are. My gram taught me all the secrets of making good s’mores. She used to make them for me all the time in the winter.”
You traded him a cookies n’ cream s’mores as he handed you one with a regular chocolate bar. As much as the other cookies n’ cream sounded, the warm chocolate melting on the freshly roasted marshmallow was more enticing. The moment the gooey treat hit your taste buds, your eyes widened. “This is actually better than any s’mores I’ve ever had,” you said, confused as you stared at the sandwich in your hand.
Ruggie ate his s’mores, licking his lips and fingers as he finished them both. “I told you, my gram taught me everything. I used to make s’mores and bring them to her all the time, and she would always say they were good but could be better,” he said, reminiscing on his memories as a kid. “Every time she made the s’mores, they always tasted better. It was crazy, I could’ve sworn she had a secret ingredient she was using or something.”
“So what was she doing, why were they so good then? Cause if they are anything like this one you gave me, then I think I would die from happiness eating one,” you giggled, trying not to get your melting marshmallow all over you. “Oh, she told me why they tasted so good,” he said. You continued to munch your treat as he spoke, his gaze on the fire as he smiled.
“She said I just needed to make them with love, and that I would find out how to do that when I’m older,” he said with a cheeky grin and scratching behind his ear. He opened his eyes, finding you staring back at him with a content look on your face. His ears perked up at how flustered you made him feel in that moment. You felt flattered hearing his words. “Is that so?” you said as your face gave a blissful expression looking at the fire.
Ruggie leaned over at you, grabbing your face and taking you by surprise as he gave you a soft kiss on the lips. You could hear Jack still trying not to laugh too loud under his breath in the background, but you didn’t care. You would cherish this night and your first kiss with Ruggie.
"Get a room," you heard someone scoff behind you two. It was Leona, standing there holding your plates of food that were ready. "Thank you," you said, grabbing the plates. Ruggie gave an embarrassed smile as Leona ruffled his hair before walking away.
