Just watched Encanto and oh my god oh my god the way everyone forgets to include mirabel in the family photo, the way everyone doesn't talk about Bruno but no one ever thinks why he went away or how he is doing, luisa must always be strong, isa must be perfect, everyone should have a gift, mirabel must not mess anything up,bruno gives up living with his family for mirabel, the way bruno sees his family through a crack and eats with them, bruno secretly filling up the cracks while abuela thinks he hurts the family, the embrace and reconciliation between Isabela and mirabel so fucking sweet, abuela and mirabel getting together, abuela's past her losing her husband and the suffering with it, mirabel being the gift herself, she doesn't need the gift because the gifts are for the people and people are not for the gifts, abuela hugging bruno, townspeople helping madrigals built their home,mirabel being the centre of the new family photo along with bruno and me crying as fuck

If they make an Encanto 2 they should absolutely explore the girls relationship with their dad's side of the family. I get that they had to have Mirabel be the only superpowered one in the family, but she's got to have a family on her dad's side.
Oh I totally agree! I would love that especially for Dolores and I want to see more of the Black side of the family. ;(

The Madrigals and Anxiety
so, I think it's not a controversial statement to say that anxiety runs in the family... what I find oddly cute is that a lot of nervous ticks or outbursts are very similar to those of other family members, but let's proceed with order.
Alma, Isabela
Alma had it hard. I think homegirl is the culprit, but she probably had an anxious gene in her before everything.
do we need to explain what her anxiety looks like? absolute perfectionism to the point of insanity so people won't turn on her, constantly making Bruno check the future for possible dangers, self-soothing behaviours (asking Pedro for help, wearing the mourning shawl), always needing to keep a watchful eye on everyone, you name it.
The perfectionism moved straight through to Isabela. There's a whole song about not meeting expectations, so I don't think I need to go fruther into it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pepa
Pepa is another obvious one. Her anxiety is palpable throughout most of the movie and it is, unlike her mum, mostly related to things that are not life-or-death situations (Antonio's party needing to be perfect).
She is constantly seen spiralling and using self-soothing rituals (hair touching, "clear skies"), often to no avail.
Her mood swings and irritability outbursts are also proof of anxiety.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bruno
Before you come at me!! He clearly has OCD... It's in the script so it was meant like this. And I know people say he was just superstitious, but I come from a very superstitious culture and it's not like that 😭
I can prove it!!
Throwing salt. It is usually done after you have spilled it. Bruno had not spilled any salt before the throwing over the shoulder. It is an act that is meant to cancel bad luck from an extremely specific action that he had not done.
Knock knock knock knock knock knock on wood. You are supposed to knock twice, say it once, only after someone has said something good you don't wanna jinx or bad you wanna prevent. Bruno hasn't been talking to anyone in 10 years, it's just a ritual to him at this point OR it's a reaction to his own thoughts. Superstitious people don't do things based on their thoughts: that's OCD. Also the number of knocks and the one on the head is oddly specific and not related to any superstitious beliefs as far as I'm aware.
Fingers crossed. Again, you do that when you are hoping for something good, but nothing happened he might want to cross his fingers for, it's just another ritual. Also, all of these rituals are kind of contradicting each other (hoping for something/trying to prevent something), he's just trying to bring as much good luck as possible.
I'm not saying he is not superstitious, he very much is, but his superstition pathologized to the point of becoming an illness. This is not how someone who's simply superstitious acts.
He also has a generally nervous attitude and lots of self-soothing movements, like the rubbing his arm we'll get to later.
The only other explanation could be that he thinks he is the bad luck, but that still does not explain things like the crossed fingers.
Tumblr media
Julieta, Camilo, Mirabel
They don't look like they struggle a lot with anxiety (I am only talking about the actual condition, not genuine worry that has a reason of being like Casita breaking or not receiving a gift). They are all very accustomed to dealing with anxious family members though and they are good at it.
Mirabel is probably the more anxious among the three, but she is also an incredible supporter for Toñito, who's not getting his own section simply because his fear was very much justified, but for a literal 5yo his anxiety shows great promise of becoming just like his mum's.
Honourable mention in this section goes to Félix and Agustìn, we stan some supportive husbands and fathers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Luisa
My baby. The first time we see her as being relevant plot-wise is literally because her eye was twitching. Her character arc is learning to chill. I rest my case.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dolores
Now, Dolores is a bit trickier, because she is not as loud as the rest of her family. She does always seem to be extremely on edge though and she is often doubting herself (she stopped believing someone was in the walls despite hearing Bruno for 10+ years because they told her it was not possible).
I don't know whether it's canon or if I've read too much fanfiction, but her room is supposed to have some degree of soundproofing, that she doesn't use because she needs to hear if her family needs help (Luisa's eye twitch).
Finally...
The similar twitches and anxious responses
The arm-rub of Luisa and Bruno (+ supportive sisters <3<3<3<3<3)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hand movement while screaming, like mother like daughter

LOVE LANGUAGES !!
Tumblr media
ENCANTO KIDS !!
characters included: mirabell madrigal, camilo madrigal, luisa madrigal, dolores madrigal, isabela madrigal
this is in terms of RECEIVING, not GIVING, if this is liked enough i might do another :)
MIRABELL MADRIGAL: quality time
most may think mirabell’s love language would be words of affirmation - considering her family didn’t give her that for most of the movie,
but imo she puts her family and lover into two separate categories, and she doesn’t expect the same thing from each.
and plus, she does like affirmations like “i’m proud of you” not so much “you’re stunning” (as much as she does appreciate it, she would just explode lmfao)
she likes living in the moment with her partner, and it doesn’t matter what they’re talking about, or what they’re doing. it’s a breathe of fresh air - and she needs a lot of it sometimes - especially when she’s stressed.
she loves any kind of love her partner gives, but quality time means the most to her :)
overall rating:
quality time: 10/10
words of affirmation: 9.5/10
gift giving: 7.5/10
acts of service: 6/10
physical touch: 5.5/10
CAMILO MADRIGAL: physical touch
i think the main reason camilo is so into physical touch is becuz this boy CANNOT keep his hands to himself (well, he can, but only if he has to.)
i feel like he’s not a huge fan of words of affirmation and acts of service, he’ll enjoy them coming from u, but there not his favorites.
he doesn’t need words of affirmations becuz he already thinks he’s amazing lol. like you’d go “camilo, ur awesome.” and he’d be like “ik sweetheart, ty for the reminder.”
he also wants to show you how manly he is so he is big on doing acts of service for u, but not so much the other way around. XD
gift giving (or ig receiving in this case) and quality time are something he loves, but physical touch still is at the top.
this bitch is a damn love machine, so he’ll take from u and give anything to u.
overall rating:
quality time: 8.5/10
words of affirmation: 7/10
gift giving: 9/10
acts of service: 6/10
physical touch: 10/10
LUSIA MADRIGAL: words of affirmation
lusia goes through a lot of stress - even after the events of the movie (imo.)
so hearing a simple “your doing great today!” or a “i’m proud of you” makes her cheeks swell from smiling.
she also really appreciated acts of service becuz of this!
she loves gifts, but she feels bad about u spending money on her😭🥹
on top of all this, she loooves physical touch. she loves giving headpats lol. and she loves receiving hugs and kisses, hand kisses will be the death of her heheheheheh
overall rating:
quality time: 7.5/10
words of affirmation: 11/10 !! lol
gift giving: 7/10
acts of service: 10/10
physical touch: 9/10
DOLORES MADRIGAL: receiving gifts
gifts - big or small, mean the absolute world to dolores! to her, it shows you cared enough to 1: buy her something and 2: pay attention to what she likes. and she’s all for it!
your family doesn’t have much money? no biggie! she love’s physical touch too. hand kisses, holding her hips, and playing with her hair are her favorites :) are this things small? yes. but does she love small gestures? also yes.
words of affirmation she also loves, but the appearance based one’s rllyyyy get to her. “you look like stunning today.” or “i love your smile.” are the kind of things she loves :)
quality time doesn’t mean to much to her - as she can always hear her partner anyway. but don’t take that as she doesn’t wanna see you at all, because it’s quite the opposite!
she likes doing acts of service for her partner, and not so much the other way around, just becuz she likes having the feeling of doing something and crossing it off a list.
overall rating:
quality time: 6.5/10
words of affirmation: 9.5/10
gift giving: 10/10
acts of service: 5/10
physical touch: 9/10
ISABELA MADRIGAL: acts of service
home girl can get stressed out - just like the rest of her family, and she really appreciates when it’s taken off of her shoulders.
she really enjoys massages - so physical touch is smth she enjoys.
words of affirmation are sorta different for her, she wants to hear “you’re not perfect, but that’s what i love about u.” or “trying your best is all u can do, don’t push urself.” yk?
isabela enjoys receiving gifts, but it’s not always the way she likes to feel loved, but she cherishes everything u can give her like a diamond🫶
she likes quality time as well - but i can imagine her being busy a lot so sometimes it isn’t always so easy.
overall rating:
quality time: 7/10
words of affirmation: 8.5/10
gift giving: 6.5/10
acts of service: 10/10
physical touch: 8/10
Tumblr media
hey heyyy
i hope y’all enjoyed!
if u wanna request smth go for it!!
if there’s anything offensive/inaccurate here feel free to lmk🫶
love yaaa!! <3

Also Isabela: *continues to not sit properly in her seat, sticking a leg out of the ride, various young children immediately trying to copy her*

Tumblr media
HE/HIM FOR CAMILO AND SHE/HER FOR READER(Y/N)
-he hates and loves the fact that you are taller than him
-he try to tip-toe to kiss you but you were too tall for him so he have to ask you- and let me tell you, he will be blushing mess
-he love to hug you and listen to your heartbeat 💓
-antonie and him sometimes ask you to piggyback
-and when pepa saw you two first time, she see herself and Felix in you guys and she almost cried✨
-he loves to hold your hand when you guys doing your chores or walking around and he told you that he won't get lost if he hold your hand.
-he thinks you are kinda scary when you mad
-when you first met His family, everyone was shocked and happy that camilo have loved who will care for him and love him.
-felix was proud and pepa was little crying and adored you but when you guys first met Like at market or during her chores, she was kinda suspicious of you and snappy now she loves you like her own daughter, Bruno thinks your great but keep little distance of you since you are way taller than him, even tho he live with luisa- and Isabela likes to tease you both to end (with Dolores)
-you think your gonna get bullied because your tall? Oh heck nah you easily can win whoever try to hurt you or camilo-
-he loves to wrap his arms around your waist and you put your head on his head (this sound weird)

-you and Luisa kinda get along since you guys are tall duo in town
-if he is in bad moon, he just hug you from behind or headbutt your back to let you know
Short story:
"AYYYY amor!" You head voice behind you and that voice belong to only camilo madrigal, your boyfriend.
"oh hey love" you opened your arms and he jumped in to it, clinging to you and putting his head at your chest
"ughhh i missed you..it's like it's been years!!!!" He whined, you laughed softly "but it's been only 1 hour?-" he rolled his eyes and hugged you thigter.
"amor....u-uh can i kiss you?" He was embarrassed to ask that but he was kinda getting used to it, you bent over and he cupped your face and kisses also while tip-toe. Y'all didn't realize pepa and Felix were spying on you guys-
"aren't they perfect mi amor?" Felix said holding his wife hand, and wiping her tear
"oh yes....they are perfect....they remind of us while we were teenagers.." pepa smiled lovingly at us, and there was little cloud
"MOM DAD!? ARE YOU GUYS SPYI-"

Random driving into work thought: If you rewrite them a little, in Encanto the songs of the sisters would work better if you switch them
Because Surface Pressure is about being this emotional anchor for the family who takes on all of this burden and responsibility while pretending it’s easy and not slowly wearing them down, and What Else Can I Do is about having who you are be diluted down to a singular trait that others assign you and don’t want you to deviate from so they never see you as a full person and you never get to see yourself as a full person
Now to me, Isabella’s thing is that while technically her gift is growing flowers, her family role is The Perfect One, and as such she has to conform to what other people decide is perfect. And given how Abuela kinda runs that place with an iron fist, perfect would be whatever she wants. That if Isabella is perfect then she only thinks what she’s told she thinks and she only does what she’s told to do and she seems to be this community symbol for why the Madrigal family is great so she has to forever be this symbol and not a person, including marrying someone she’s told to marry even if she doesn’t want to because saying no would be going against what’s best for the family, which would make her not perfect, and everyone else in the family has to work hard and all anyone ever asks of her is to sit around and be perfect so if she suddenly is “selfish” and not perfect, then what is her purpose?
So I feel like for her, it works having a song about how she’s existing only for everyone else and never has any time or space for anything that doesn’t exist to serve other people and she feels like she’s being slowly crushed by the pressure of being everything that everyone else wants of her all the time because there is this amorphous terrible consequence for the family if she stops doing all of this for them
And Luisa seems to exist only to the family and community as Strong, she is Strong and nothing else, all they do is tell her to go do tasks for them that involve being strong because that is her single point of value and there’s no point listening to her or getting to know her beyond that because she’s just The Strong One
So a song about being tired of being defined by one single trait and instead wanting to explore everything else she can do outside of being strong seems like it would work because no one, including her, knows who she is or what she can do beyond lifting things
Idk I just remember I heard the songs before seeing the movie and thought it was weird that the song about carrying the burdens of the family was given to the person who really just exists to do physical tasks while the song about being defined by one trait was given to the one who from childhood has been forced to exist only in a way that serves the image and needs of the family

I heard you were looking for Bruno x male reader ideas 🤤
Ooo what about a Bruno x male reader where the reader is like a vagabond that comes to Encanto every year to hang out with the Madrigals? Kind of like a Snufkin and Moomin thing. Like they're kind of together/pining for each other?
One year that M!Reader returns he finds that Bruno isn't waiting for him because he's 'disappeared' so he travels even further in order to look for him, he still comes back every year to see if he's returned. After the events of the movie reader is reunited with Bruno and obviously he's super pissed but he's also so relieved that his favourite boy is back and alive.
Mayyybeeee they get married? uwu'
sorry you had to wait so long for this, hope you like it!
Bruno Madrigal x Male reader
Tumblr media
With your backpack heavy on your shoulders, you finally arrived yet again at la casa Madrigal. All year you would travel, you slept in a tent, and made your money by playing the guitar. You made great friends along the way and got to tell all your amazing stories to anyone who would listen. Every year you hung out with the family for a few days sometimes even weeks. You had never been one to settle down but with the family Madrigal, you wouldn't mind staying in the same place forever. When you sprained an ankle or had back pain Jullietta patched you right up with her cooking. Delores would keep everyone updated on your whereabouts and well-being and when you were close to the village Luisa would meet you halfway to help carry your baggage and gifts with pleasure. The Madrigals were basically your family.
They loved to listen to your tales, especially Bruno who hung at your lips every time you spoke. Even when most people wouldn't really talk to Bruno you saw him as the highlight of your visit. After years of your annual visits to the Madrigals you realized your feelings for the dark haired man. You had a while to think about them on your travels. You were certain he would be the one to make you stay and settle down.
You arrived with Luisa at casita, Camillo and Mirabel ran in your arms. You entered casita with the little girl on your back and a copy of yourself. The other family members came to greet you one by one. Julietta welcomed you with a plate of arepas and Isabella gave you a beautiful flower crown as a welcoming gift. Felix welcomed you with open arms "Here comes my favorite visitante!" The weather was perfect and a big smile was plastered on your face as you chatted with Felix and Agustin.
You tried to keep calm but your eyes couldn't stop wandering over to the door of Bruno's room. Agustin noticed the way you looked around, waiting for that one special person. You turned back to him "Where's Bruno?" Suddenly the room went quiet and the faces around you grimaced. Abuela straightened her back and spoke "We don't talk about Bruno" you were so confused and everything felt wrong. Julietta's hand landed on your shoulder and lead you to the kitchen where she let you sit at the table. While making you a drink she told you how Bruno had disappeared without a note.
The following days felt wrong without his presence, you tried to find him but when you realized he really was gone you stayed alone in his room. Your heart ached as you thought about the last time you had seen him.
The dark eyes look at you with admiration as you sing about the things you had seen on your travels and then a goodbye song. Your song ends and you smile at Bruno "Will you write a song about me by the time you return?"  he asks. "Look in the future and find out." You wink. Bruno opens his mouth"I don't want to" You give him a confused look. He takes your hands in his "I don't want to ruin our future with a stupid prophecy." You give him an understanding look and hold his hands tighter. "I'll be back."
Years passed as you looked for Bruno, asking every person you meet if they had seen the small dark-haired Madrigal.
You didn't find him.
Still, you returned to the Madrigals every single year. The smaller Madrigals had now grown into teenagers and the town had been growing too. Even though it was a delight seeing the colorful family your mind kept turning back to Bruno.
It was your annual visit and you arrived at the spot where Luisa would usually wait. Instead, you were met with Bruno. Your Bruno. Maybe a bit older and with more grey strands of hair. But still yours.
You dropped all your stuff and ran over to him. Grabbing his shoulders to make sure he was real. "How the fuck could you do this to me? I was so worried! I- I didn't know what had happened to you..." Bruno kept apologizing while you teared up. You threw yourself into his arms and you hit the ground together. You hugged the air out of his lungs. "I'm just happy you're back" you told him. His hands cradled your face and wiped your tears. "Te amo" he whispered before passionately kissing you, this time it was him making you breathless. You melted into the kiss. "I still want to hear that song"
A few months later you held the most beautiful wedding the town had ever seen, Pepa didn't ruin it (only because Bruno was marrying you). The whole family worked together to make sure you had the best day. Isabella took care of the flowers, and Julietta cooked a heavenly buffet with delicious desserts... You couldn't stop smiling and every time you met his eyes your heart could beat out of your chest. You finally found your reason to stay.

i know you are in your Wish Criticism and Analysis Era (love to see it, very interesting takes!!), but i was wondering if you could spare some thought as to why you thought that the moral/lesson of Encanto was not great? in my eyes, it was always mostly about forgiving and moving past generational trauma... even if the movie didn't fully execute on that hah
I can try! I haven't gone over it in my brain in a while. Sometimes answering questions helps me verbally do it, though.
I guess I should clarify. The message in Encanto isn't outright evil...it's just a little tricky to try and teach in the story that they used, without also saying a bunch of stuff that is problematic. I'll try to explain.
The main point in Encanto seems to be something like: "You don't have to be perfect: just being yourself is special enough."
Easy enough. When anyone in the Madrigal family tries to meet Abuela's super-high standards, it turns out to be hurtful. The more Pepita holds her emotions in, the more tense and stressed she gets. The more Luisa tries to carry, the more tense and stressed she gets.
But the problem is, the movie so often gets TOO CLOSE to portraying the opposite of "just being yourself is special enough" as "give your life for others." It tiptoes too close toward the "self-focus is beneficial" line.
The Madrigal family occupation, the thing Abuela is pushing them all too hard to do, is not something bad. She wants them to use their gifts to help others. But Abuela is a (sympathetic) antagonist in the movie.
And it's explained. You feel for her. She apologizes and there's forgiveness, like you said--I'm just saying, it's tiptoeing up to a line that isn't always the most responsible line to show to kids, in a kids' movie. Kids do not generally need help questioning whether or not their parents are being too controlling, or too pushy, or wanting too much--kids usually already lean too far in that direction on their own.
But like. The problem is, there's an equal-opposite lesson each of the character could learn that I think is better for kids, when they're kids.
Pepita should be free to feel, genuinely --> yeah, but Pepita also shouldn't let her emotions get so out of control that they hurt others.
Luisa shouldn't be expected to carry every family burden --> No, but in general it's a good thing to "bear one another's burdens in love" and do whatever you can to help, even if it's heavy.
Isabella shouldn't have to act happy & pretty constantly, and marry for the good of others --> Of course not, but it is good to be able to find joy and act genuinely joyful in all circumstances.
Mirabel shouldn't have to have the same level of accomplishments and abilities as everyone else in order to feel loved --> No, she shouldn't at all, but also, it is never a good idea to say to yourself "there's no room for improvement in me because I'm already enough and perfect; no flaws that need apologizing for or changing."
Abuela shouldn't focus so much on controlling what her family does even if it's for their own good --> No, absolutely not, but in general, an older woman who guides and teaches her family on how to selflessly serve others is considered wise, not controlling.
Bruno shouldn't have to only tell people what they want to hear to be accepted --> no, obviously not, but he shouldn't be so constantly negative that he's causing everyone around him to be anxious (I know that simplifying it because he had a literal power to explain the future and they asked him to, but I'm talking about the lessons kids could glean.)
And that's my main beef (it's not even that big a beef; I thought Encanto was so well-done.) My main beef is that it's a movie kids will be influenced by, but the themes and lessons are really more helpful for an audience of college or even high-school-aged people. People who are old enough to have that level of discernment to say:
"Yeah, it's good that Abuela is trying to teach her family to be selfless and safe, but she goes too far by being fearful and controlling; yeah, it's good to control your emotions, but not if you go so far that you're not allowed to be vulnerable at all; yeah, it's good to want to help others by lending your strength to share their loads, but not if you go so far that you get your sense of worth from your success; yeah, it's good to stay positive and be a light to others, but not if you go too far and become a faker; yeah, it's good to be able to recognize your flaws, but not if you get your sense of worth from making up for them."
Those are the sort of sub-lessons Encanto teaches: "don't make decisions based out of fear (fear that you're losing your worth, your identity, your loved ones, your future, the love of others.)"
I'm just saying, kids aren't going to be able to pick those sub-lessons out as easily. What will probably stick with them is the idea of grandmother = wrong; spending your life helping others = stressed and losing your superpowers etc.
But ultimately, it's a movie with a lot of heart, and this idea of grace and unconditional love, so it is not a big mistake or a loss or anywhere near what I'd rank Turning Red and Wish. It's just a little...reckless for a kid's movie. 🤷‍♀️

I just came up with this slightly angsty but sweet idea about the platonic yandere madrigal family obsessing over a reader that's the child of Bruno.
-Pepa, Julieta and Alma would all be the most protective over them, especially if they looked identical to Bruno.
-Dolores and Mirabel would without a doubt be the best friends of them, Mirabel would know what it's like to feel like an outcast since the people most likely aren't treating the reader very well due to their relation to Bruno. I imagine Dolores would definitely be a great best friend too, she hears everything people say or murmur about them so I imagine she'd be painfully aware of how the people treat reader. Since she's also a platonic yandere in this like the rest of the family I can totally see her blackmailing people with stuff she's heard about them whenever they talk crap about reader.
-Dolores would definitely also be the one to comfort Reader as she can hear their crying from how they're treated every night.
-Bruno would definitely watch over his child in secret, he'd never want to miss even a second of their life
-Julieta would definitely fuss over their injuries, even if it's something like a paper cut. So would Alma and Pepa.
-Isabela would without a doubt nonchalantly roast the crap out of anybody that dares to to think it's a good idea to talk crap about you to her. She'd do it with a tone in her voice that says "I'm better than you and you should know that" all the while subtly roasting them in the process. They'd never recover from it lmao
-Camilo would definitely do his best to make them laugh whenever they're feeling down, he'd shapeshift into various people and do funny impressions of them
-Antonio would be absolutely adorable, he'd totally get his animals to comfort Reader whenever they're feeling down, too.
-I can see Luisa just randomly picking up reader whenever there's a puddle so they won't have to step in the puddle lol.

Thoughts on the Madrigal's Love Lives
I'm currently playing around with my head canons for Encanto's future and in trying to solidify what each Madrigal's partner would be like I came to a realization. The Madrigals each have such unique life experiences, that their partners would kind of need to be equally unique in order for them to relate to each other. Like every time I start shaping an OC for one of the Madrigals, I just can't see Mirabel connecting to your average joe, or Luisa ending up with somebody who isn't especially gentle. Even when I try making a bland background sort of character, I just find myself asking "Why the hell would Mirabel be interested in this guy?". It's like how Agustin and Felix are both such great characters, they kinda have to be in order for it to make sense that Julieta and Pepa would love them.

Dance Macabre (Bruno x Chubby Reader)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bruno Madrigal hears that there is another seer in town and curiosity gets the better of him. But it turns out there's more than meets the eye with this new person.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey guys. I'm back. This was longer than expected, I kept going back and forth on concepts. Anyways I hope you enjoy romancing the rat man himself.
---------------------------------------------------------
Bruno was glad that his family was accepting of him after his disappearance. Though it seemed like not all the village felt the same. No one was outright rude, but he knew. Between visions and whispered words, it was obvious.
So when he first found out about you, he was hesitant. Dolores had heard rumors of a seer setting up camp outside of town. You coming was fine, but a new self-proclaimed seer. This was odd.
Next was Luisa, she came home one day with a love struck look on her face. When her mother asked her about it at dinner, she said she went to the seer. And thanks to her she finally got the courage to confess to her friend. A sweet young girl, who obviously shared the same feelings, but was also to shy to confess.
After word spread about the help she gave the Madrigal family, she was flooded with customers. Everyone and their brother was going to see her. On top of that, they were singing her praises.
He didn't get it. What did she have that he didn't? So realizing that this situation was driving him crazy, he went to see her. After he figured out how to talk one of the kids into joining him. Mirabel was great moral support, but not the most tactful.
“So Tio is there any reason you want to go meet the new seer?”
“I was curious is all.” He trailed off, ringing his hands together. This would have been less nerve wracking with one of his rats. But she had talked him out of bringing any of them. Saying that a lot of people didn't like rats and we didn't want to scare the woman. Still he wished he was petting one of them for comfort.
“Well, I think it's a great idea. You both already have so much in common.” She said with a sly look coming across her face.
“What are you getting at Mirabel.” This conversation was not helping his anxiety.
“Just that, you guys might hit it off.”
“I haven't even met the woman.” He said with a stern look.
They had reached a large tent on the edge of town. A sign staked in the ground said ‘Madam (Y/N)’. Bruno hesitated at the entrance, he had no idea how to announce himself.
Mirabel saw her uncle's struggle and rolled her eyes. She grabbed his hand and shoved through the tent flap.
They where greeted by an unexpected sight. A full figured women was chasing a cat around the room.
“Get back here you demon!” Her round cheeks were flushed red.
Bruno wondered how long she had been chasing the cat. He was brought out of his thoughts by the feline leaping at him. With just enough of a reaction, he managed to catch it. It was only then that he noticed the scarf in it’s mouth.
She came to a sliding stop, mere inches from his nose. Her warm huffing breath hitting his face. She had such enchanting eyes, he found himself lost in them.
“Oh, thank you.” She scooped the bundle from his arms and scolded the cat. “ I’ve told you not to steal my scarfs. I’ll never understand why you’re so obsessed with them.” She took the accessory from it and began to tie the scarf around her head. “Now, how can I…Brunito?”
His eyes widened in shock. “Yes, I mean, have we met before?” He was sure he would remember someone so bewitching.
“Not quite. I had a session with some of your family. You came up a lot.” Her inviting manner was intoxicating.
So much so that he had forgotten Mirabel was there, until she cleared her throat. “Tio Bruno, I realized that Abuela needed my help this afternoon. It was great seeing you again Madam (Y/N).” She rushed from the tent.
Wait, she had been here before? Bruno had a suspicious that there may have been ulterior motives for her agreeing to come along. Suddenly he felt a warm hand on his arm, he jolted in surprise. Then blushed when he saw the gentle reassuring smile on her face.
“Would you join me for afternoon tea?” She said in a soft tone. “I may even have some sweets from my travels to go with it.”
He hesitated, glancing to her table he saw a steaming cup of tea, so they had interupted. But on the other hand, it would be rude to not accept an invitation. So he nodded and sat at the table as she looked for snacks.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bruno wasn’t sure he could remember enjoying the company of someone outside of his family. He had the most pleasant afternoon with you. The conversation flowed. When there was a silent moment, it didn’t feel awkward.
The relief he felt when neither of you brought up your profession was also great. It was as if you both understood the weight of the job and kept it out of the conversation.
He couldn't remember a more pleasant afternoon.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As he returned home, he didn't expect the onslaught of questions he would get at the door.
“What did they do?”
“Have tea.”
“What did they talk about?”
“Just general conversation.”
“What did he think of her?”
“She's nice.”
It seemed to simmer down after that, until dinner that is. Then the questions started all over again. Though this time he realized something. His sister's were the ones asking the more leading questions. Then the kids would follow from there.
So after everyone had left the table, he stayed to help clean up. Which was when he turned the questions on Julieta. “When did you and Pepa decide to get me to meet the seer?”
Her shoulders dropped and she shook her head. “I should have know you would figure it out hermano. We just want what's best for you.” She reached out for his arm, but he backed away.
“And how is forcing two people into each other’s lives for the 'best’?”
She crossed her arms with a slight frown. “We thought that you would both enjoy each other’s company. You do have a lot in common.”
He wanted to scoff at that. The only thing they had in common was being seers. He was horrible Bruno, the seer of disasters. She was wonderful, so sweet and beautiful. Everyone loves her, for good reason. “Well, she should have a say in it all.”
Her posture became less stiff. “She been asking about you since she found out you were a seer.”
His head shot toward her with wide eyes. “She has.” He said, more breathless than he would like to admit.
“Yes. I think she wanted to meet some one who would understand. You know.”
“Yeah, I guess.” He said with a shrug.
She then pulled him into a tight hug. “So, tell me all about your visit.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And so the visits for tea continued. A few times a week Bruno would make his way to your tent after lunch. The conversation would flow and the atmosphere was always warm. Her cat would leisurely make her way between either of their laps. He couldn't remember a more peaceful time in his life.
So as he lay awake, one restless night, he started at the moon. Comparing it’s alluring beauty to you. He then realized he was in love with you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next time he went for a visit, he hesitated. It felt like the first time he met you all over again. His heart was hammering in his ears, his palms were clammy, and he couldn't stop fidgeting. Would she want to be in a romantic relationship or be friends. His heart stopped at the thought of her wanting to not even be friends. If his feeling drove a wedge between them.
But that faded away when he saw she was taking down her tent.
She heard him come up and turned around smiling. “Hey, I was hoping you'd be by soon. If not i’d have to find your house.” Your smile shifted to something more timid, a look that Bruno wasn’t used to.
“Why are you packing?”
“I’ve out lived my timr in this town. I’m moving on.” She reached out and clasped his hands in his. “I was hoping you would come with me.” Her hands squeezed tighter. “If you want to, that is.”
He thought for a long moment, could he abandon his family again. Then he caressed her hands. “I don’t think I can leave my family. I’m sorry.”
She smiled at him with teary eyes. “It’s OK, I understand. I’m heading West, if you ever want to join me.”
He looked at her, with his own moist stare. “I’ll never forget you.” Then he gave her a strong hug. Both of them holding back unsaid emotions, parted.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next day he spent in total solitude. Never answering his door or leaving his room. He was miserable. He finally snuck out from hiding to get something to eat, his stomach gnawing at his backbone.
What he didn't expect was for his mother to be waiting for him in the kitchen. She motioned at the chair beside her and he walked over. His shoulders slumped further as he sat, upset at getting caught.
They both sat for a moment, until he finally break the silence. “How long have you been waiting?”
“For as long as I needed to hijo.”
“You didn't have to.”
She gave him a tender look. “I know, but I wanted to. Now tell me what has you holing yourself away.”
He knew it would be a matter of time before someone asked him. So he layed his feelings on the table.
She seemed surprised, then her expression morphed into one of joy. “I’m so happy for you hijo." She became confused. “Why did you not go with her?”
He was stunned. “I only came back. I didn't want to abandon my family again.”
She shook her head with a mournful smile. “No mijo, love for another, doesn't mean loosing the ones you already care for.” She laid a hand on his. “Follow what your heart tells you.”
He nodded and gave her hand a squeeze. “I’ll think about it.” Then he got a snack and went back into hiding.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In another day, he was giving the Madrigal household a teary goodbye. Everyone was sniffling, but smiling. He then headed out, with a overloaded pack, full of many traveling gifts.
Mid day of his trek, he noticed an odd sight. A tent with the sign ‘Madam (Y/N)’ staked outside. His slow pace disappeared as he raced towards the familiar sight. Calling out as he sped up, he was elated when you poked your head out of the entrance.
You grinned and race over to meet him. Colliding into an embrace, you both grip at each other fiercely. Drawing back, you grabbed his cheeks and pull him in for a kiss. Backing away, your not sure who's more shocked by your actions.
“I’m sorry. I was so excited to see you. I should have asked before.” You ramble, but he stopped you with another kiss.
“It’s fine.” He said with a smile. “How are you only this far?”
“I thought you might need a few days to decide.” She said with a knowing look.
With a shake of his head he kissed her again.

For @jacarandaaaas, based on the premise of “madrigal grandkids having a sleepover.”
Post rebuild, the girls plus Camilo have a sleepover. I have no other words to describe that than chaos ensues.
The Madrigal Sleepover
“—And that is how I told Bubo Marquez to go fuck himself.”
“Oh, you’ve finally gotten back to the point of this story?” Luisa asked, only half-joking because it had definitely taken a good ten minutes to reach the conclusion. Isabela rolled her eyes at her.
“I still can’t believe people think you like men,” Dolores muttered.
“I’m just so proud that I have such an amazing cousin who can kick ass!” Camilo exclaimed. “Seriously, where were you when I was getting bullied in school for being weird? I could have gotten out of so many fights, if I had the ‘my older cousin will beat you up’ excuse! Because frankly the sister one didn’t really work out.”
His sister rolled her eyes, “That is an exaggeration you weren’t bullied in school. Or at the very least, not anything comparable to a man trying to kiss you against your will.”
“No, I guess I can’t relate to that…” Camilo admitted. He looked a bit wishful at the concept of a boy kissing him - he was gladly awaiting his first kiss still. It made Isabela and Luisa gag. “Well, neither can the rest of my cousins. No man would try it with Luisa. And Mirabel…”
He trailed off, all eyes falling to the girl in question. Mirabel was curled up against Luisa, definitely not far from falling asleep. The only movement being the slow rise and fall of her chest. Isabela clambered over Dolores and flashed a torch briefly over her. Briefly because Luisa immediately shoved her older sister into Dolores to shield Mirabel from the attack.
“Christ, Luisa, Mirabel’s fine,” Dolores muttered, pushing Isabela off her and trying to preserve her glass. Isabela fell straight off the bed to the floor, cackling to herself.
Mirabel yawned, eyelashes fluttering, “Is it bedtime yet?”
“Nope,” Isabela grinned, head poking up. “It’s only just turned ten. Come on, you old, little lady, you can’t be tired already. We’ve barely done anything yet. And you missed my great story, I’m gonna have to tell it again.”
“Is this still the one about you threatening to chop a man’s private parts off and feed them to your carnivorous plants?”
“Damnit, you heard? That sucks!”
“Well, I’m not asleep… yet.”
Luisa sat Mirabel further up, tapping her arm gently to further wake her up. “Well, Bela’s right. We haven’t done much yet. You can do a little longer and then we’ll let you go to bed.”
“I physically don’t think I can.” Mirabel said. She was ignored though.
“So, what should we do now?” Camilo asked, eyes sparkling with mischief. “I think we should—”
“I swear to God, if you say the ‘switch the alcohol out for water prank’ again,” Dolores warned.
“No, hermana! I would never!” He mocked offence at the accusation. He lifted the yellow blanket beside him to reveal a collection of makeup palettes, lipsticks and several hair accessories. “Makeovers! A staple of all the best sleepovers!”
Dolores and Luisa peered over. The former looked more hesitant, while the latter looked fairly intrigued and even excited by the idea. Mirabel raised an unimpressed eyebrow at the messily kept containers or just the makeup in general - Camilo wasn’t sure, but he knew his cousin wasn’t the biggest fan in “covering her face in chemicals” as she would say.
Isabela, on the other hand, swatted him hard and he spluttered out petals, “Bitch, when did you steal my shit!?”
“Who said anything about stealing? I’m just borrowing it.”
“No, I’m with Isabela,” Dolores piped up. “I didn’t hear you ask her.”
“Okay, okay, I shoulda asked first!” Camilo held his hands up in surrender. “But… can we do makeovers? Please?! Dolores?” Then smirking, “I bet I could make Mariano propose to you.”
Dolores glared at him. “Isabela, be a dear and slap him for me.”
“Gladly!” Isabela did as instructed, making Camilo hit her back. Vines abruptly yanked him off the bed in response.
“Well, I think it’s a good idea,” Luisa offered. “I wouldn’t mind someone doing my makeup. Bela? You want a go?”
“Oh no, if we’re doing this, I wanna do Dolores.” Isabela insisted, already grabbing her cousin’s hand to prevent her from running off.
“Hey, she’s my sister!” Cried Camilo as he dragged himself back onto the bed.
“So? I called dibs first. And I’m the eldest.”
“That’s not fair!”
“Fuck yeah, it is! Maybe next time don’t steal and you’ll get to have things your way.”
“Yeah, but—”
Dolores groaned a little. “For God’s sake, you can do it together. Just stop arguing.”
Camilo and Isabela relented, seemingly coming to an agreement that they could work on Dolores together and immediately began discussing ideas. That had Dolores backpedaling and trying to argue that they use one of them instead.
Luisa only chuckled, pulling Mirabel closer. “I guess it’s you and me, hermanita.”
“Oh,” Mirabel said. “You wouldn’t want me to do that. I don’t know much anything present beauty trends. I barely know what half of this stuff is.”
“I’m sure you can come up with something.”
Now… if you were to walk by at any point over the next hour, you would be understandably confused with what was going on.
Dolores was constantly complaining and crying out, claiming she had been poked in the eye or her hair was being pulled too tightly. There were several points where the others genuinely stopped to ask if she was alright. She was. Just being dramatic as Camilo and Isabela assaulted her with products. Somewhere along the way, they had both given up on trying to work together to do a good job and were now just trying to make Dolores look as silly as humanly possible. Not that she would know; she was kept well away from a mirror.
Meanwhile, Luisa had happily sunk into the part of an exaggerated and comedic Marie Antoinette that she was unofficially given to play. Mirabel, having woken up a little more, had decided to make Luisa look like the ideal fashions worn by French aristocrats at Versailles, during Louis XVI’s reign. Isabela (after giving up with her cousins) even provided some dye from her plants that could whiten Luisa’s hair, which had been teased high and decorated with ribbons and beads. In contrast to Dolores, Luisa was clearly enjoying herself and greatly liked teasing the others - even if Mirabel kept pointing out the inaccuracies of her acting.
“You look ridiculous,” Dolores commented.
Luisa gasped in horror. “Guards, behead that filthy peasant immediately!” She cried out in her best attempt at a French accent, pointing a finger accusingly. “It will probably be an improvement.”
“No, seriously, prima, you look like someone from the 1880s.” Camilo said.
“1780s,” Mirabel corrected.
“Does it matter? Ain’t it the same thing? Boring, old shit that’s all history is.”
Mirabel didn’t say anything for a moment. The other three wished in silence. “You did not say that to me,” she muttered. “In fact, stop talking to me. You and your incompetence is giving me a headache.”
“Just say ‘fuck off’, sis.” Isabela begged.
“Why don’t we play a board game?” Dolores suggested. “I’ll go get one—”
“No, I want to play Charades. And as the queen of France, I should get to pick.” Luisa beamed, smug as anything.
“Right, fine.” Dolores huffed. She pulled herself to her feet. “You all play a few rounds of Charades. I’ll go clean my face and then come back with a couple of boardgames.”
Mirabel quickly followed, “I’m coming with. To get medicine; I can’t deal with a headache all evening.”
Neither of the pair knew what to say when they returned a good half hour later to find Camilo had been banished to a corner of the room and held there in Isabela’s vines, meanwhile Isabela and Luisa (who was now without her makeover) were covered in plant dye and play-fighting. It seems like Isabela had gotten ahold of some scissors as some point because Luisa was missing more than half her hair. Multicoloured clumps of hair scattered about the room.
“What the actual fuck?” Dolores muttered.
“She started it!”
“She said I could cut it!”
“I thought you were all going to play Charades?” Mirabel inquired. She was quick to push by Dolores and play mediator, trying to convince her sisters to separate. “In hindsight, why did we both leave?”
“Because these three are impossible,” Dolores replied, rolling her eyes. “What exactly did you do?”
Camilo huffed in offence, “I didn’t do anything! I swear! Isabela just moved me here for no reason! Please, hermana! Help me?”
“We were both teasing Bela about how she doesn’t get as many ladies as I do.” Luisa explained. “Then I gave her permission to cut my hair because why not? It’s hair, it’ll grow back. And, well, I think we just got carried away… whoops.”
“Whoops?” Mirabel echoed, unimpressed. Then sighed heavily. “Oh, I’m too young and too tired to deal with this,” she mumbled, settling back into the pile of pillows. “I’ll just have Mama chastise you for it tomorrow morning.”
Isabel shrugged, “Guess us three will be sleeping in then.”
“I refuse to believe that the two of us are somehow related to you three.” Dolores continued. With several more glares at Isabela, her cousin finally relented and released Camilo. The pair joining Mirabel on the floor. Luisa and Isabela slowly made their way over, with Isabela going to finish the haircut. Because apparently if Luisa was going short, she was going all the way.
They went on to play Charades and then a few rounds of card games, though Dolores begrudgingly did so and then tried to claim that she wasn’t enjoying it. Mirabel fell asleep within three minutes of sitting down, so Luisa had taken her back to her own room - to prevent Camilo and Isabela from using her as the victim of some prank. Speaking of, Isabela, Luisa and Camilo only seemed to get more hyper, but that was balanced out by Dolores also getting a little more giddy herself. They then moved on to playing a quick round of Truth or Dare. That was ended by Luisa, who felt that Isabela’s dares were “death sentences” and Dolores’ truths were “too cruel and personal”. Camilo had just enjoyed the drama of the girls, snacking on cocadas.
That had transitioned into a game of Who’s Most Likely To? With very predictable results, but the four of them were enjoying themselves.
“Most likely to get a tattoo?” Camilo asked.
Everyone’s eyes turned to Isabela, who grinned. “That’s fair. Who’s most likely to get caught robbing a bank?”
“Without our gifts? Any of you three.” Dolores answered. “I’m much too clever. Who’s most likely to get hungover and continue a day of work following, without raising suspicion?”
“What a scandalous question for you, Lola!” Isabela teased, hitting her arm playfully. “What would Mariano think of you?”
“I’m the most likely to continue working,” Luisa chuckled, unashamedly. “Can’t say I wouldn’t be caught though. Isabela’s the one with the highest alcohol tolerance, but we’ve yet to see Camilo fully drink, so who knows?”
Isabela shook her head. “No, no. I think it would be you, sis.”
“I’m with Bela,” Camilo piped up. “You’d show up, tough it out and then collapse the second you got back to Casita.” He stood up, dropping down into Mirabel’s form and leaning over to Luisa, “And then I’ll say ‘I told you so’.” Then, shifting into his sister, “‘Because we are always right.’”
The four of them - yes, including Dolores - burst into laughter, so much so that Isabela worried that they might wake the adults, instantly flicking a flower into each of their mouths to shut them up.
When only Mirabel and Antonio showed up for breakfast the following morning, Julieta and Pepa had gone to hunt down their missing children. They found them all huddled, fast asleep, in Luisa’s room in a mass pile of blankets and pillows and a fairly large mess. The two smiled together as they watched from the doorway.
“They are just like we were,” Pepa said.
“Yes, they are exactly like…” Julieta trailed off, pausing. Her eyes widened. “Is that Luisa’s hair?”
Pepa cackled, pulling her sister away and shutting the door. It would be better to let the kids sleep in. “Don’t act so surprised, Juli. You remember the time we shaved Bruno’s head bald?”

Week 2 Part 2: Lucía's Relationships Continued
Tumblr media
Alejandro
Alejandro Moreno was Lucía’s late husband.  He was a few years older than her and several inches taller.  He had black hair and hazel eyes and though he always considered himself of ‘very average’ appearance, his romantic nature and artistic spirit made him a popular target for flirtations in the village.  Several of Lucía’s former classmates were a bit jealous when they began to court.
He adored Lucía and often got them into trouble, sneaking her away into the jungle to show her a new waterfall he’d found or some viewpoint that inspired him.  He was passionate and headstrong and sometimes let his passions carry him away – especially in the cases of Lucía, his artwork, and defending the town’s scapegoat.
Alejandro, being just a few years older than Lucía, knew Bruno a bit better than she did – or at least remembered the boy he was before he became an anxious, moody teenager.  He always had a soft spot for the seer and had the same mindset that Lucía’s father did – that Bruno had a hard job and didn’t deserve the ire he increasingly got for his visions.  He apprenticed under an elderly artist of the Encanto when he was a teen and went on to paint several murales depicting the Madrigals, and always treated Bruno with the same respect and attention that he treated the rest of the family.  This, of course, made Bruno nervous because it was unexpected – but it did cause him to stand out in Bruno’s memory, even if he didn't trust at the time that Alejandro was being genuine.
Alejandro became a bit obsessed with Bruno’s story, especially after his disappearance, and was the one who insisted on keeping Bruno in the center of the murales as years passed, because – as he joked with his wife – “if we cannot talk about him, at least we can see him, eh?”
Alejandro and Lucía tried for years to start a family but it never happened until their mid-30s, when Josefina was born. By then, both Alejandro’s parents and Lucía’s mother had passed away.  Alejandro and Lucía were thrilled with Josefina, their ‘little miracle’, and doted on her. Alejandro was a loving husband to Lucía and father to Josefina, but he did allow his obsession with his art to distract him from them from time to time.
It was his insistence that he needed to wander the forested mountains on the edges of the Encanto to find new materials for his paints that led to his untimely death – a landslide leading to the tragic accident that took him from his wife and daughter.
Before Alejandro’s death, Lucía’s relationship with the Madrigals was one of polite and friendly respect. Lucía was born too late to be friends with the triplets and too early to be friends with the following generation.  Their social circles did not overlap much and they did not have great need for any of the Madrigal’s services, aside from the occasional healing food from Julieta or the request for Luisa to move their printer so they could clean beneath it or to help rearrange their bookshelves. They attended the same church and the same village-wide parties and were on good terms but not close.
For various reasons, the Madrigals blamed themselves for not being able to save Alejandro, and Lucía was so deep in grief that by the time her family pulled her through it enough that she began living again, she forgot to tell them that it wasn’t their fault.  She couldn’t bring herself to thank them, even though she knew she should.  But she was never angry at them.  She continued to treat them all with polite respect and welcomed Antonio to story time. The Madrigals never thought she blamed them (or assumed she was too gracious and classy to confront them about it if she did), but in classic Madrigal fashion, lack of communication lead to a burden that no one ever needed to carry in the first place.
Tumblr media
Josefina
 “You have my persimmons to court.”
Josefina Carmen Moreno is Lucía’s only child, her pride and joy, her dear heart, her beloved daughter, her corazón…and her constant source of exasperation and worry.
Josefina looks very much like her mother in her face and body type, but her eyes are hazel and her hair is wavy and black like her father’s. Her hair is always coming out of her braids. She’s a small child with a lot of energy, and is the extrovert to her mother’s introvert.
Josefina was almost three years old when she lost her father and doesn’t remember a whole lot about him now that she’s a big six year old, but she loves seeing the evidence of him everywhere around her – in the murales of the Madrigal family, in the books he illustrated in her abuelo’s shop, and in the murales he painted in her room. Josefina is an only child with a big heart and the enthusiasm of three kids.  She loves hearing about her father, looking through his art, and listening to her mother’s stories.  In school, she loves reading stories and making things and she hates math.  She’s always wanting to play or be with people – whether it’s her Tía Sofia’s big family (that she is slightly jealous of)  that lives on the other side of town, or her friends Juancho, Alejandra, Cecilia, Antonio, Manuel, and Juan -  she just loves being around people and being in the spotlight.  (As long as it’s positive attention.  If it’s negative she gets defensive and upset.)  She has big dreams and her biggest one is to one day own a bicycle.
Lucía’s biggest goal in life is to raise Josefina well – to have her grow up knowing she is loved, fully and completely, and that she is capable of whatever good thing she sets her mind to.  Even though Lucía is usually too busy or too worried to see it, Josefina already knows both of those things and is completely confident in her place and her abilities.
…sometimes a little too confident…
When the Madrigals stay with Lucía and her family after Casita falls, Josefina enthusiastically embraces her role as hostess; when Bruno sneaks his rats into the house, she declares him to be just like Cenicienta (Cinderella) and immediately takes a liking to him.  She’s stubborn and spirited and quickly becomes one of Bruno’s biggest fans and biggest defenders, and when her mama and Bruno finally fall in love, she readily gives them her approval.
