this!! ALL OF THIS!!!
mirabels empathy, emotional intelligence and general understanding nature are her MOST prominent traits of the whole movie. dare I say the traits she is literally defined by! so to see people continuously try to erase those traits (not just for mirabel I see it with other madrigals too but mostly mirabel) it just feels like you didn’t understand the movie! mirabel would never be a villain in the canon universe she would never dare to, shes so insecure she’s way more likely to run away or die in the process of running away. She would NEVER hurt her family!! another one that annoys me is “why didn’t she blow out the candle” BECAUSE THEY SAY IN THE FIRST 5 MINS THE MAGIC CANDLE CAN NEVER GO OUT😭 even if she wanted to (which she definitely would at times and would feel immensely guilty for it) she can’t blow it out.
For some reason this fandom has a problem with the canon characters and I cant wrap my head around it. It’s very obvious when people are just projecting because it doesn’t feel like the same character! again I understand AUs are different but when people say “this was so close to happening in canon” I want to laugh😭 they showed us what was going to happen in canon! mirabel would have either run off in tears or eventually gone back. Because really there’s nowhere else for her to go! she would more than likely die or injure herself trying to find a new village or town and I think she herself knows that.
Mirabels own guilt literally haunts her! she blames herself! she doesn’t blame bruno, alma, isabela or her parents she has always viewed this as HER failure! and whilst there are definitely points in her life she would internally blame them mirabel chooses not to act on it. She chooses love, mirabel has never been a character defined by vengeance and resentment and that’s what makes her so strong to me.

okay, just gonna say this now before i start this post: i have absolutely no problems with alternate universes, go ham with them, go wild, you can have fun, etcetc, they're called alternate universes for a reason, after all
however. HOWEVER.
i have a problem when people say something should have happened in canon, when canon itself disproves or goes against whatever these people want
the reason why im bringing this up?
the whole thing with how some people keep saying mirabel should have [insert the usual things people say here, hate, slap, punch, left, get revenge, etc, take your pick, there's unfortunately a lot to choose from] the family. in the canon movie.
again, i have no problem with alternate universes and seeing them in fanfics or whatever, you do you, could be interesting to see even
but when you start saying this should have happened in canon, its just. no. no.
god, it just frustrates me so much whenever i see these posts and comments, the ones that said she should have gone evil or villain or hate the family and all that stuff
because mirabel herself loves her family. she literally said it outright in the movie!!! its not in her personality and character to just go against them and hate them and want revenge. there will be hurt and hesitance and some resentment after everything she'd gone through, yes, but outright hate to the point where she'll hurt them?? absolutely not.
not with her character, her love and empathy and understanding, the traits we see her show in the movie.
like my friend once said: mirabel "he loved this family. i love this family. we all love this family" would NEVER hurt her family
say it louder for the people at the back!!
and thats not all i want to rant about tbh...the real kicker on this one?
whenever this statement is added on top of it all: "if i were mirabel—"
well, news flash people who keep saying these things, mirabel isnt you. mirabel is her own character who has her own experiences and her own feelings. maybe you'll be able to relate to her, especially with similar experiences, but that doesn't mean you can just copy and paste your own feelings onto her and say this is what she should have done in canon because thats what i would have done!!
we all project onto our favorite characters in various ways, which is completely fine, go at it and definitely not surprising for a story about family issues, but when you start to project so much that you throw away the character's actual personality and characterization in favor of said projection? yeah...no.
thats not mirabel madrigal anymore, that's a completely new character...or dare i say, a self-insert for some people... 💀:////
yeah, im just so frustrated with this AAAAAAA 😭
but anyway yes.
thats it, really. again, AUs are absolutely fine but if someone starts yapping about how canon should have [insert whatever those people keep saying here] instead while disregarding actual canon and proper characters and personalities, im going to become violent
anywho...thats my thoughts on this, went on a bit of a tangent but

THERE IS NO CANDLE TO HOLD STOP SAYING CANDLE HOLDER😭 the candle isn’t something alma controls! it was a blessing but it’s also the literal embodiment of her grief and Pedro’s sacrifice! she cherishes that candle so much because it’s one of the only things left to remind her of him.. (it’s also their wedding candle)
Candle Holder this... Miracle Holder that...DID YOU NOT WATCH THE MOVIE OR LISTEN TO ALL OF YOU OR READ THE Q&A!!!!
Alma NEVER considered the miracle as something she or the family owned or she held as the Matriarch! Rather something they needed to earn! A blessing.
Being Matriarch was never a magical role. For there was also no gifts till the triplets were 5! Alma took the role of leader herself! Casita to shelter. The others def looked for her for guidance! She def had help of others along the way! As she did not build that village alone!
There are TWO miracles. Abuela’s, born of love for family, embodied by her candle, flame-colored magic (stemmed in her grief and need to protect.), the 2nd: Mirabel’s, born of the same, embodied in casita, its colors… everyone’s! (Free and hopeful!)
The miracle is them!
Matriarch was NEVER some magical role where you are holding a candle (added there is no candle now!) or hold a miracle (as the miracle is the love and connection they feel in themselves and each other.)
It is due to their characteristics someone would be next leader!!! Not a magical role. If person so happens to have a gift that is an add on!
You can be leader with or without a gift!!! You can also just not be one. As they are all special/without or without a gift!
Mirabel is special, important, glows and valued as a person even without a gift! She is the true gift for her own self!
AHHHHHHHHHHH!

completely agree! It is sad that they only see box office as success because if it wasn’t for the pandemic I feel encanto would have made a LOT of money!!
you know what? I actually find it wild we are coming up to 3 years of encanto being released but there hasn’t been a single announcement for a short? or anything really. It’s actually bizarre to me because encanto has been the only HIT this decade but the last piece of animated content we got was ouas and before that it was a whirlpool commerical💀

opening random encanto yt videos’ comments section is like staring at the waking storm you’re about to plunge into and knowing it’s not gonna be pretty and you’re probably not getting out of it unscathed (aka calm/happy fine—also sorry pepa oof—)
god the amount of misinterpretations people have with the movie, with so many scenes is insane, i’m about to go even more insane myself than usual

I could rant forever about all the details in this movie honestly!!!
The foreshadowing is SO good in this movie!! waiting on a miracle and the family madrigal being obvious ones but did you guys know the order mirabel sees the doors flicker when she sees the cracks is the order they lose their powers in? Isa + Luisa first because that’s who’s powers act up first dolores + camilo + antonio at the dinner scene and alma last because she was the last one willing to admit the problems!!
I love the character design!! I’ve rambled about it many times but it’s just !!!
I love how despite mirabel being our protagonist they show when she’s wrong and other characters call her out! She’s not a perfect protagonist she’s a flawed teenage girl and that just makes her more endearing
I love that they didn’t make Mariano a mean character just because isabela didn’t want to marry him. The problem isn’t Mariano it’s isabela feeling trapped!! Mariano is also shown to be considerate!
I love that most of the focus is on the female characters (if only the fandom would do that) I love seeing a multigenerational cast of women all flashed out with their own unique traits
about the misinterpretations i completely agree. I feel like this fandom has a “fanon” problem. especially with the most developed characters! surprisingly the ones with the most screen are the most common mischaracterised. I really dislike how encanto as a movie went to such an effort to give every character such a variety of traits and nuance only for the fandom to continuously reduce them down to one singular trait. It almost feels like reinforcing those stereotypes the movie was so set on breaking. As well as this continuously ignoring some of the best canon traits each character has. They feel so far from the original you might as well consider them ocs at that point.
I love the animation on Bruno’s vision shards (they look edible), I love the little details in mirabels room like her outfit sketches being hung up on the walls! THE BUTTERFLIES!! this movie has so many hidden butterflies it’s so fun to spot them!!
the soundtrack obviously but also the score!! only recently discovered that “the house knows” is a reprise of “the cracks emerge” it blew my mind!!!
One thing I really love about encanto is the expressions! they can convey so much with so little and the little subtleties it adds to each character is just incredible to me!!
SKIRT ANIMATION. it’s like hypnotizing to see how the skirts flow in this movie I am glued to the screen every time.
the dos oruguitas scene is gorgeous and so incredibly important to the core message of this story! As well as this scene the fall of casita is another incredible one!!
the songs feel like full blown fantasy musical numbers and I don’t know why people consider that a criticism of the movie is about MAGIC I want to feel that magic in the visuals of the song. So each musical number was like the most incredible experience!!
I love how waiting on a miracle starts off as a reprise of the family madrigal before changing to 3/4 time to show how mirabels out of place
the line “how far do these roots go down” hits so hard and I cant explain why
Felix and pepas love is so real and pure
julieta and agustín are incredible parents
dolores entire design
the fact luisa wasn’t reduced to a stereotype and was allowed to be flawed
mirabels voice!! it’s so unique and recognizable like I love it sm
the way felix sings “no clouds allowed in the skyyy”
I love that the characters actually look their age!
almas room being a replica of her old home showing how metaphorically and physically she’s stuck in the past
“I was thinking of my daughter!!”
I love that with isas transformation it’s not her hating femininity but changing what her femininity means to her
I love how mirabels worst enemy is her own mind. the madrigals aren’t aware of how she feels because she never opens up and it’s just slowly eating her up inside. in the end mirabel needed to acknowledge herself in order to grow (I say acknowledge because I refuse to believe it’s acceptance and I think she would still struggle with her self perception post movie)
I love how the Madrigals use their gifts to help their community and not for self gain. It’s such an interesting twist on the classic superpowers story
I love that the Madrigals are just normal people who randomly got a miracle, nothing of status just normal people in a normal town who got gifted.
the way pepa kisses antonio and hugs him after he gets his gift !!!
the way isabela is the one to initiate the hug but mirabel is the one who snuggles into it

I love how realistically written alma is and how her story is treated with respect and nuance.
