Hey, ik writing can be difficult( I'm a writer and haven't put something out in like a year😬😂) but do you think we might still get the new Thrown chapter today?

Hey, yeah, so as is probably obvious given the hour, there will not be a Thrown chapter today. I was going to make a post about updates so this works out.

I feel terrible about it, especially since it was already delayed a week, but I have been overtaken by A Mood, and it has kept me from editing because I just... hate all of it. I know it will pass because I've wrestled with it previously, but right now I can't look at it and make myself want to edit, let alone post it.

I had been trying to finish the story before March, because I know March is going to be rough for me. It seems the rough has started earlier than expected, as I've started struggling with things I thought I had overcome months ago. I'm still going to try to edit and post this chapter soon, maybe this weekend or next week, but I don't know when it will be.

After that, I think there will be one last hiatus. I really want to get these last few chapters right, and that means I need to be in the right headspace and take my time with them. The final chapters might not come until April, which bums me out but I would be even more upset by posting an ending that was up to snuff.

So, yeah. Sorry. Bad news and I'm sad about it.

March 10 Honor Bound fixes and edits

Changelog for March 10:

When first meeting up with people in Chapter 5 while not officially romancing anyone, the person who likes you the most out of Matia, Raffi, or Savarel will come to talk as intended rather than defaulting to Matia

Character guide on the stat page no longer bizarrely leads straight back into the main stat page

Various corrections to stat check tests

Added another option to be pro-Denario with Mandriotti

Added an option to ask Raffi not to tell their friends about your love life

Signposted one of the consequences of the town hall meeting more clearly

Various minor typo fixes, tweaks, and corrected dialogue/description transitions

Thanks so much to everyone for your reports and feedback, it’s been incredibly useful! I read through everything and where I don’t make immediate changes, I keep an eye on what’s been mentioned to look at during later edits.

I've had reports about the end of Chapter 4 ending the game rather than going onto Chapter 5 as it should on the itch version, but I'm having trouble replicating it. If that happens to you, please can you clear your cache, then try again and let me know if it still happens - that'll be helpful for me figuring out what's going on.

On a non-bug-related note, just to let you know that you don’t have to start romances or flirt openly with characters as soon as the options come up in order for romances to work! I had a couple of comments saying they wanted to get to know characters better before starting a romance, which is totally safe to choose - you won’t break the romance by moving more slowly. To give a sense of the scale, I’ve recently been writing scenes all the way in Chapter 9 in which you can start a romance completely fresh with an NPC having not flirted at all before then - so if you want to be friends with characters for longer in the early-to-mid game, slow-play it, or simply play the field casually for some time, you can.

To start a polyamorous triad romance, you’ll want to do or say something to make sure both people involved have a sense that you’re interested in them, but even that can be started later than Chapter 5.

Basically, pacing is flexible and you can do what feels right for your PC. It varies across different characters, but overall you can experience a wide range - whether that’s sleeping with some people early on, flirting straightaway (in various ways - very overtly or more subtly), harbouring a long-standing crush and not saying anything for a long time, having an early crush that fades away over time, having a one-night-stand that turns to friendship, having a friends-with-benefits relationship that does or doesn’t become more romantic, becoming friends and being surprised by your own romantic feelings after a long time…

And/or have solid workplace bonds, become trusted friends, build a support network or a sense of community, develop a queerplatonic bond, give support and ask for it when it’s needed, or be a lone wolf and not get particularly close with anyone, focusing on the job and your other ambitions…

Lots of different options depending on what you want to go for!

Retrospective 2024 (4)

Last one!

As teased in the infographic, My resolution this year stays unchanged from last year's:

Get things off my desk and shelf it for good.

I want to continue completing and fixing older projects, so I can shelf it for good (like I did Goncharov Escapes! this year, and DOL-OS). But, since I added a bunch of title on my itch page, there are a few more to the pile compared to last year that needs fixing (or finishing) - at least DOL-OS is done :D The goal: Harcourt (MelS want to finish it, but it's still him dependent), The Roads not Taken (I dropped the ball on that one at the end of last year), An Eggcellent Preparation (samesies), and Exquisite Cadaver or P-Rix - Space Trucker.

I won't even try to promise I won't make new games (large or tiny), because last year made it obvious there is no stopping me. I planned last year to participate in a few comps... and ended up doing two dozens. So... At least, I won't participate in the big comps (IFComp/SpringThing) because the ideas I have for them need at least another year to make it happen... I do want to try to make it to one parser-focused comp again (either TALJ or ParserComp) and try out Moiki or DonjonFI. I'm only 7-9 games away to have 1 title/year alive...

Below the cut has more detailed expectations for some titles. Like last year, no real timeline on what will be done when - this year has shown me that life likes to throw stones at schedules... Announcements will also be whenever, because I make things on a whim :P I will try to have a better announcement schedule for updates however.

Oh! one more resolution: continue to do word crimes ~ obviously!

The trials and Tribulations of Edward Harcourt

While I've been working on the final edits of Chapter 5, MelS promised to be hard at work on Chapter 6 this following semester, which is the final chapter. From mid-January onward, he should have a clearer schedule IRL to set himself some time to write.

We hope to be done with the edits and coding of Ch6 this year.

When Ch6 is cleared, we will do one final sweep at the earlier chapters to ensure the writing style is consistent, rebalance variables and puzzles, as well as making it compatible with as many screens as possible (especially for maps). Solutions for puzzles (mazes and such) will get a special log on itch too.

La Petite Mort

The game is "technically" complete already, but I spotted a few typos here and there that could be taken out, one theme is eh... really not as pretty as I had wanted it (the "PJ theme"), and I've been wondering if I could add a few more rooms or interactions (with the animals especially).

I'm aiming for a March-April update. Though it should have been done last November already...

The Roads not Taken

I've mentioned my plan for this project the past few months (before I got distracted with other projects), which is to fix the parser mechanic (to follow a bit more the conventions and fix the frictions of the game), include the missing content from the SpringThing version (Codex and Endings), and potentially have a hypertext version (links to click) for accessibility.

I would like to be done with this before summer at the latest - by March at the earliest.

Entre-d'oeufs coquilles - An Eggscellent Preparation

A bug or two needs fixing in this game (the AEP version) - how the box is used/eggs are handled -> for the ending - as well as a bunch of typos (a small re-write may be needed).

As AEP is the most recent version, with more content, I will need to translate the updated/fixed version back to French (EdOC).

I would also like to include more pixel art for each "room". I do not know yet I would manage that, but we will see!

I think there isn't much to fix that an update before the summer could be doable.

Exquisite Cadaver

That ball-n-chain project that's been dragged around for the past year, poor game... At least, I've given up on a French version.

The same amount of rounds is missing from the playable version (21), with no real progress made last year. All rounds are at least drafted in some fashion, though not all the endings are.

A sane planning for this would be to do an update every 3-4 rounds until the game is complete. I will try to achieve this.

If I could reach the half-way mark by the summer and complete the game by the end of the year, this would be great!

P-Rix - Space Trucker

This game can't stay in this current state! I have a rough draft of the mechanic and enough bits of writing to make a coherent update with some touch-up. I know how to end the game (the "good" ending), with even an option for further "storylines" after that first delivery is complete. I even have the "stops" on planets or ships all clear in my head (RNG babyyy).

I will probably focus on this project in the second half of 2024.

Crimson Rose & White Lily

With the hiatus getting closer to a two-year one... an update is long overdue. I may break an update in multiple ones:

fixing the main story code

adding Scene 5 (needs to be written properly)

adding Scene 2 variation

fixing the Codex

including Bonus content (may be a separate "game")

I would like to have the first point done in the first half of the year, and the second... well in the second half. If the Muse is in my corner it might happen sooner, but she hasn't been here all last year, so who knows at this point...

I miss writing Razac y'all...

SugarCube Templates

Even if I've done all the "coding" templates I had wanted to do for a while, I have a handful more visual templates in my drafts (different shapes!).

Having tried all "main" Twine formats, I've been itching at making templates for Harlowe and Chapbook. Either doing a Harlowe/Chapbook version of the template already done, or just making completely new one.

Expect some to be added to itch (when I get bored/frustrated with my projects).

Other projects

If there is time/energy left in me, I would like to take a crack at:

Finishing The Dinner, with all the remaining courses and the planned final choice. Also styling it in Harlowe properly.

Finishing the OG planned story for In the Blink of an Eye, which was supposed to last "a week" in the story (instead of 2 days) and have more consequences/endings.

Finishing The Rye in the Dark City, which is missing 2 acts: the interrogation of the different peeps and the "closing" the case. A bit of re-write in the first act might be needed.

Finishing Don't Press the Button (not really IF). I want to make it work in both keyboard and mouse... If I can manage it, then it's just a matter of moving the element around the page, changing colour, and randomise whether to click or not. JavaScript/jQuery is required however ;-;

Fixing The Thick Table Tavern: first the bar (group bottles, add new ones + new recipes), then the Arcade Mode (there's a bug I've been meaning to fix for one mode + add difficulty), then the Story Mode (essentially do a re-haul + add more storylets + the main client(s) of the run).

Remastering SPS Iron Hammer - a.k.a. re-writing it, adding the whole escape mechanic, re-coding the whole thing...

I don't think I would be able to do ALL of this - with the amount of time/effort some of these projects would required, it would probably be impossible by myself. And I should probably focus on CRWL instead if I have time/effort left 😂

Other... other

I'm going to continue organising small comps and jams this year, both with @seedcomp-if (which will run all year now - 8 months of Planting, 3 months of Sprouting, 1 month of voting), and @neointeractives (8-10 jams/year).

I will probably participate in a handful of the jams I've either organised, or small program-focused jams (like with ink/bitsy), but avoid the "big" ones this year (even if the SpringThing was fun!). There are also a handful of other jams I've had my eyes on, so we will see if I can manage... Expect more short silliness on this side.

A thing I will continue doing will be playing IF games still. I have 15 games left in the IFComp (with one being an absolute beast) and want to take a crack at old comp entries (IFComp, SpringThing, and the others), especially the French ones. Reviewing takes a while, but it's a good practice to think about the positives and negative of games - and take these lessons for my own projects. Expect more at @manonamora-if-reviews (or on the IFDB).

Aaaaannnnd that's it!

That's more than enough to keep me entertained for this year. ... which may potentially be the last one in a while where I will have any free time. I am certain of one thing for next year (2025): there will be a lot of change happening IRL, which will for sure mean less time to do any fun thing (not just making IF). Probably long periods of time where I will be completely offline too. This year might be the last where I have a consistent presence online. I really want to make the most of it!

2023年4月30日

This month was again very busy! Do I ever have not-busy months? Probably not! I still accomplished quite a bit, but I didn't do everything I had planned to do. One thing that I noticed though was that my reading skill and my listening skill have progressed because of incorporating reading and listening into my daily practice routine. I picked back up a manga I had started a year ago and found that it was easier to read this time. I also realized I am able to pick up more from news and other TV programmes now. The key is really just practicing consistently! It feels good to see tangible progress, and that motivates me even more.

今月はまた忙しかったです！忙しくない時はあるのかな？多分ない！今月は結構勉強が進めて良かったです。すべての目的には成功できなくても、まだまだ進んでいます。今月気づいたのは読解力と聴解力が結構上がったと思います。毎日ちょっとだけでも読んだり聞いたりするので、日課に入っていることになりました。そして去年読み始めようとした漫画を今月また読み続いたら、去年より楽になったって気づきました。最近ニュースや色んなテレビ番組を見ると、前より全然簡単に理解ができるって気づきました。毎日ちょっとずつ勉強するのはポイントです。具体的に成長を感じるのもモチベーションになります！

My 2023 Goals Progress

I laid out some broad goals for my Japanese study in my 2023 Japanese Language Goals post, so again I will update my progress towards these goals.

1. Read one page a day of 日本の歴史366 (にほんのれきし366) everyday in 2023.

How is it going? Good! In March my reading fell behind due to work and illness, and I didn't exactly catch up in April, but I am trying to continue even though I missed quite a few days and have not yet been able to read them. The goal is reading everyday, and although I really wanted to stay in order and to stay on top of it, sometimes things happen! I'll keep reading a page a day and catch up where I can.

2. Finish 日本語総まとめ N3 (にほんごそうまとめ N3) workbooks.

How is it going? Good! I have been working one of the four workbooks (Vocabulary, Kanji, Grammar, Listening) into my schedule several nights a week (mostly weekend nights!). I have worked through Week 4 out of 6, so I am close to the end of these workbooks! I am also taking more time to review them, so I can do fewer pages at a time but I feel like I am getting more out of them. I read each day's lesson carefully before I tackle the questions, and then I pick up each workbook again throughout the week and just read through the questions again.

3. Review and learn the first 6 levels of the 常用漢字 (じょうようかんじ), specifically the 教育漢字 (きょういくかんじ) up to grade 6.

How is it going? Not great. I definitely did not pick back up specifically the 常用漢字 in April, so I will try it again in May! Tbh, I just forgot to focus on these during my kanji studies and was more focused on vocabulary words ^^;

4. Read at least one book every two months.

How is it going? Not great. I am very behind on the books that I wanted to complete by the first half of this year. I lost motivation in March or so and haven't been able to pick them back up. I was reading them slowly and mining for vocabulary/kanji, which takes a lot of time that I don't have. I have been reading other books sporadically (although I haven't finished any) and I have been reading manga and articles semi-regularly. I thought this goal would be easier than trying to read a book each month, but it's still a lot for me. It's ok to change your goals, and next month I'll try to reformulate this goal to make it work for me.

5. Improve my speaking and writing by finding a tutor.

How is it going? It could be better. April was busier than I thought! I hope to find a tutor in May, but I find it difficult to find someone who suits my needs (and my time constraints). I hope to have better news on this next month! Wish me luck!

6. Study Japanese for at least 10 minutes a day.

How is it going? Good! Variation in my study schedule is the key to keeping up a daily Japanese study goal. If I'm tired, manga or an article, or a quick flashcard session, are quick ways to practice. If I have extra time I squeeze in a workbook lesson. Finding lots of little ways to practice helps me to stay interested and to stay motivated.

April Study Log

April was another busy month, so let's see how I did!

Vocabulary - This month I spent a lot more time practicing vocabulary. Not only did I write down words and look up words I didn't know, I also tried to conscientiously incorporate new words into my daily conversation. This helped me to remember them as well as to figure out what situations I would use them in.

Listening - I spent a lot of time with podcasts (during my commute) and TV/movies (with my son!) so I got a lot of listening practice in. I did realize the other day that I find it easier to listen to even more fast-paced or advanced TV shows, etc. That was a nice realization!

Kanji - I slacked off on kanji and definitely did not focus on school-age kanji. I honestly just forgot, and didn't have much time to commit new kanji to memory. I'll try again next month!

Speaking - We had a lot of play dates and so I got in a lot of speaking practice. The more I speak the more comfortable I am and the more information I can convey. This is definitely something I'd like to work on with a tutor!

Grammar, Reading, & Writing - I would like to incorporate these more into my daily studies, but they have really dropped off my radar recently. I have been quite busy and very tired as a result, so I am not going to be too hard on myself.

Going Forward in May

Continue working through N3 総まとめ workbooks as often as possible

Work more on 漢字 and specifically focus on the 教育漢字

Get an italki (or other?) tutor that suits my needs

Review and practice 3 grammar points per week

Next month I will really try to stick to the goals I have set and I hope to have a better report. But I still think that any progress is good progress, so let's keep working towards our goals! See you next month!

Onto our favorite subject! If you guys haven't seen, there have been multiple edits pushed for mostly Chapter 1 and 2 this week! These edits have added new options to some dialogue choices, some customisation choices, and some variation to certain spots where I saw I favored sarcastic MCs over others. There have been a couple of grammar fixes pushed in Chapter 3, 4, and 5, but I have not done a more thorough editing of those chapters; after putting in some achievements, my brain kinda just. Flat-lined and needed a break, lol!

I have gotten LOADS done on Chapter 6! I am actually in Scene 3/4 for the rough draft, with about half of Scene 3's rough draft completed. Again, the rough draft is just me going through and picking one option for each branch and getting through the story so I know where it'll go when I go back to flesh it out! However, that's still a LOT of progress!!! The whole chapter is at about 5,600 words, and before doing the update I had started editing Scene 1 for a bit to start fleshing out so it's not so much work later.

A few things with MG:T:

In case you aren't aware, MG:T is only expected to be 9 Chapters, NOT including Interludes and the Epilogue. We are over 50% done with the game! VERY EXCITING!!! (Especially as I am ITCHING to get to book 2, lol!)

Chapter 6 is expected to be out in April. I will be releasing it in full as I'm expecting it to be a small to average size chapter.

I am always open to feedback and suggestions! Honestly, I would REALLY LOVE for you folks to tell me where you think improvements could be made or where you'd like to see more choices/what kind of choices you want to see more of. Be the change you want to see, lol!!

Remember: Every time an update is pushed, your saves will be corrupted! I try to push things all at once, but I never know how much I'll get done at any one time so sometimes I push smaller updates over a course of a day. If you aren't seeing anything new, it might be because your save is before the update was pushed!

I am still checking this Google Form! I am considering making one that is all about feedback and suggestions, and I DO check the one that's listed there daily! I actually have an active list of suggestions and stuff people have given me, and I do try to take the stuff you guys tell me needs fixing and put those fixes into the game!! Those of you who have answered the feedback section have been amazingly helpful and I appreciate it so much!!!

In case you missed it, I do have a page up now that has a list of all the free scenarios I've posted in the past and present, at least, the ones I could find! It also has a list of sneak peeks from Patreon I've posted! Some of them are a bit outdated as they're from, like, when I first started writing the game back in 2018-2019, but they're still enjoyable!

It's letting Patrons vote for which RO(s) will 100% be featured in April's scenarios for Patreon, and as a special treat, one of the 2 chosen ROs will be available to the lower tier as well! nothing up my sleeve: ch 4 research notes

As always, more background for nothing up my sleeve can be found here.

This one is going to be less of a coherent explanation and more of a list of funky things I discovered while researching this chapter. I’ll follow up with more links to info on the Children’s March later -- I’m still searching for this one documentary I saw years ago that was phenomenal, but also not the one from the SPLC, argh -- but in the meantime here’s what I’ve got:

“The means we use must be as pure as the ends we seek” is from MLK’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail. I had actually never sat down and read the whole thing through until I wrote this fic, embarrassingly, but I strongly recommend it. The good Reverend put some BANGERS in there.

I went through roughly 30 pages full of alcohol ads from the 1960′s and the only ones that had black people in them were Scotch whiskey and bourbon, so I felt reasonably comfortable making Ray drink that. Also, check out the bottom of this post for some gorgeous vintage decadence & sophistication.

Interestingly, studies of alcohol use in the 1960′s showed that nearly half of black women in the US abstained entirely from drinking, compared to 34% of white women, 29% of black men, and 24% of white men (this is, of course, based off a too-small sample size since medical studies in the 1960′s often didn’t bother to include black people, sigh). The relatively higher rate of abstinence among African-Americans can apparently be traced back to the temperance movement having strong anti-slavery ties; however, that relationship began to break down after the Civil War. Found that fascinating! I still had Allison reference drinking martinis with her friends, though.

This is more of a meta note, but: I don’t think Allison has ever had friends. She went straight from unbridled sibling dysfunction to Hollywood, where she used her powers to control the people around her until she became mega-famous (which then becomes its own kind of control). Her entire life has been divided between family (the only people who matter), hired help, hangers-on, and "workplace proximity associates.” I don’t think she knows what to do with people who don’t fall under the “family” bucket, but also don’t provide a paid service or particularly want anything from her. I can see her trying to recreate this pattern with Ray and him (essentially) forcing her to go get a life.

The Shining didn’t come out until 1980, so Ray just thinks Allison is really into old-school proverbs.

By 1963, 91% of American households had a television, but Ray and Allison might be in the 9% because none of the screenshots I’ve got of their house have a TV in the background. Instead of writing one in anyway, though, I had them all go over to Miles’ parents place because in times like this, you want to be with your people.

I have now gone completely insane and started looking up “what was the weather like in Dallas in April 1963?” Y’all what does it MATTER, nobody is fact checking my writing like this! I could literally make up anything and you’d roll with it!! Why am I worried about whether 54 degrees is cold enough to need a coat?!?

Cleopatra really is four hours long. Good lord.

Part of my current problem is balancing cute stuff about Allison & Ray’s relationship with the Civil Rights stuff, which I originally intended to be more of an occasional backdrop for all this. However, 1963 was an insanely eventful year for the Civil Rights Movement. After MLK’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail in April and the Children’s March in May, Kennedy announces the Civil Rights Act in June, Medgar Evers is assassinated the very next day, the March on Washington takes place in August, and the 16th St Baptist church bombings happen in September. Trying to figure out a way to honor all this and the impact it would have had on Allison & Ray, while at the same time trying to figure out how to give them some of those more lighthearted character moments, is -- actually, it’s a pretty good metaphor for some of my day to day struggles, so at least it’s familiar. Ok, bedtime, no more thinking about this right now.

2022 Craft Project Roundup

it’s almost the end of 2022 and I had the thought - why not compile all my projects for the year in one post? It’d be fun (for me). So here we go!!

January - March: Ficbinding of my Taking Care Trilogy

A project I had been dreaming of even while I was writing these fics - I finally made fancy hand-bound copies of my longest fic series ever.

March: Straw Marquetry Panels

Big shoutout to Pipsqueak on the Renegade server who let me know that this shit exists, because it is the perfect intersection of things I like: natural materials, shiny things, geometric shapes, straw!. I discovered that straw marquetry is incredibly fiddly and time consuming and my initial thought of full ceilings or large murals was way overly ambitious. But I still love it, despite all it’s fiddliness

April - June: Various failed experiments with straw dyeing

There is a way to dye straw. It must exist. People sell dyed straw. But despite at least 10 attempts with fiber reactive and RIT dyes with various prep methods, I did not once succeed in getting dye to take to the outer shiny side of the straw. (I intended to make pink straw for the wedding guestbook later in this list)

May: Pieced cubical bulletin board covers

I decided to spice up my cubical a bit with some nice fabric covers over my bulletin boards, after a friend told me it was super easy to remove them & cover them with fabric via tacks. The green fabric I got turned out to be too short 🤦 so I got a jelly roll of rainbow batiks and pieced these funky covers together.

May - June : Pair of dyed historical-inspired tunics

Another project I’ve had in my head for years - using a medieval reenactment tunic tutorial to make my own shirts out of linen. Linen turns out to be fabulous to dye, unlike straw, which is evil. It does wrinkle the moment you look at it, but you just have to be chill with that.

June: First longstitch bookbinding

Inspired by the amazing works of queercore-curriculum I had decided to use a criss-cross longstitch for the wedding guestbook I planned to make for my friend A. This was my initial testbook, which I did on graph paper thinking I could use it as a journal. The graph paper turns out to be very thin and bad for journal writing but the book itself I am quite proud of :)

July: DIY alcohol stove (& knots!)

So in July I went to a natural building/strawbale construction workshop and I was going to need to cook for myself on the first day of camping - hence a brief research binge on alcohol stoves & how to DIY them. This is the simplest possible alcohol stove made out of a cat food can & while youtube will tell you to optimize by making it much more complicated it works fine for boiling water/making fancy curry mashed potatoes.

Also around this time I learned how to do several knots for having up my camping hammock, which isn’t exactly a craft but it’s not knot a craft ;)

July: Part of a house

oh fuck it, the house goes on the list. As part of the aforementioned workshop I (along with about 40 other people) assembled the strawbale walls for a family home. It was by far the most amazing experience I had in 2022. Like adult summer camp with more powertools & while learning skills I hope to someday turn upon a home of my own.

September: Pajama pant spectacular

In September I made two new pajama pants (one of rockin’ flannel and one of a nice purple shot cotton) and also repaired several old pairs (new elastic, added pockets, patched some holes etc). Yes I do patch pockets on pajamas, they’re not fashionable but they’re much more convenient for phone access while cooking.

October: Wedding Guestbook

A guestbook for my friend’s wedding, done in the style of that other longstitch book, but with more fancy things :3

November: Small notebook

Made a small notebook with the offcuts from the wedding guestbook for a friend gift exchange. I was very proud of this one; simple and sweet and finished in a single weekend (it helped that the pages were already deckled to size).

December: Paperboard desk organizer

I keep my downstairs stuff (pens, wallet, keys, etc) in a little basket downstairs so I don’t have to wander the house looking for them and I decided to finally make organizers for it so it wouldn’t be a melange of mess. Used scraps from my bookbinding supplies & they turned out pretty good considering I have 0 box making experience.

December: Tablet weaving/work lanyard

Another craft I’ve wanted to try for years: tablet weaving! I finally thought of an excuse one day at work while contemplating how much I hated my lanyard - it flipped around constantly and the keys made unending clanking noises when I walked. I might make a post on tablet weaving bc I am in love. I need to think of more excuses. It’s so good, so satisfying. It’s like the opposite of straw marquetry in terms of how much I enjoy it in the moment :p

Subtitle: Surviving Dreams

Synopsis

Mimi Milan doesn't have normal dreams, instead, she can dream with people she knows and discover their true faces, without filters. This is how she knows that no one is to be trusted because everyone always has ulterior motives, even her family.

But her dreams also have a dark secret. If she gets injured in them, her injuries remain on her body when she awakens and she has to deal with them regardless of severity.

When her dreams start to turn violent, can Mimi find a safe way out?

Writing Process

How it all started?

I have no idea.

No! For real. I know why it started, but how? I’m not really sure.

Okay, then.

WHY it all started?

I needed an outlet for all the toxic thoughts I was having, to overcome some bad habits to be free to work on my mental health (though I didn't know that part was coming at that moment), and I saw that an author –I don't even remember who was– said that their writing was a healing process.

And I thought, "Why can't be the same for me?".

It has been years since then, considering that I started the very first draft in March 2021, according to the date of the document I have.

[I need a parenthesis here to let you all know that my year starts on December 20th and finishes on December 19th, I don't track my years with the world year (like, 2023 right now) but my year (24 right now), so in my registers there will be two Decembers, one at the end of the year that goes from the 1st to the 19th, and the other starting the next year on the 20th and until the 31st.

Instead of using the world year (like 2021 before), I will be using my year (22 in that case), but I will do my best to also put the world date so we're on the same page 💙.]

I also found that the very first register (before then I just tracked some lousy, approximated words, and just since, like, three months prior) is from March 11, 2021, of 545 words. After that, it seems I started writing regularly (more on than off) since April (18.4k words, 12.5k in May, 11.8k in June, 26.5k in July, 2k in August, 9.5k in September, and 8.5k in December).

The details of the second draft say that I started it in December 2021, so pretty sure that 8.5k are from it. There is also proof that I started posting the story on Wattpad and Inkspired, I don't know which version (seems logical that the first one but who knows), in the same month.

During my 23 (December 20, 2021 - December 19, 2022), the monthly word count was like: 2.3k in December 2021, 7.6k in February, 6.8k in March, 5.7k in April, 8k in May, 2.2k in June, 4.9k in August, 8.7k in September, 15.3k in October, 19.7k in November, and 53 words in December. If it seems like this year I wrote way lower, it was because I was not only writing on Mimi and my word count limit suffered a decline due to my health. It's still pretty limited, but I continue writing anyway.

I also started the third draft in May 2022.

I have seen a lot of writers recommending finishing earlier drafts before going to the next, but, eh, I take recommendations with a grain of salt. I felt I had to stop where I did, so for that there are three unfinished drafts before I finally started having a neat process register.

Before starting the next (and current) draft, I did an outline, in October 2022 exactly (that was the 15.3k words). It contains twenty chapters with four major points each. It's not tight, I can add and remove, divide them at will, but that was everything I was able to think about, based on what I knew of the story from the three previous drafts, at that moment.

Then, in November 2022, with the NaNoWriMo main event, I started the fourth draft, with the started words that I shared above.

Now, in my year 24 (December 20, 2022 - December 19, 2023), the word count is going like: 3.7k in December 2022, 11.5k in January, 18.4k in February, 15.9k in March, and updating monthly.

As I told a bit earlier, I'm having a better, neat process register of my writing. I'm also devoted to this story as my main project until I finish it, but all those words aren't entirely for the main story; I'm also counting extra scenes, outside activities (like the ones from Tumblr), and whatever I add to my Details (worldbuilding, characters, etc) document.

Drafting Progress: around 23%.

Writing Schedule

What is this?

As I told above, the outline contains twenty (20) chapters with four (4) major points each, which are eighty (80) scenes, but as the writing goes on, I have been dividing some major points into a few more scenes, actually having eighty-eight (88) scenes and counting. Not really knowing my writing flow, I decided to try a weekly approach and see how it went, so I scheduled one scene a week starting on January 1st, 2023.

As I started the fourth draft right away in November, the first six weeks went by revising and editing the first six scenes. Then, the real work started.

To today day (May 15th, 2023), I got behind twice in my own schedule: in the 3rd Chapter, 2nd Major Point (scenes 16 and 17) for five days, and in the 4th Chapter, 2nd Major Point (scenes 21 and 22) for thirty-seven days (still counting).

Below you will be able to see the schedule, the original one had the last scene finishing on July 13th, 2024, but I changed the dates due to the last delay.

I feel like March just started, but we're more than halfway through it. I'm a contrary mixture of anticipation and dread for the month of April. My way of participating in Camp Nanowrimo for 2023 will be to post my writing online. When I was a teenager I didn't have a MySpace page because my parents didn't have Internet. I kept a diary, and I would show it to my friends. I know that's not how a diary is supposed to work, but I was so proud of how I expressed myself at times I wanted a select audience of my choosing. That died down with age. I still keep a diary, only it's now a Google Doc, and I post some of what I write on social media, so I guess I'm still doing the same exact thing I did as a teen.

Time to mix it up. I've joined Tumblr a few times, and for me, it's always been a lonely place because I don't interact very much. I get the occasional idea for a comment or a message, but even though there's the option to go Anonymous, I feel too shy to make the attempt. Yet if I plan to self-publish a few books in the near future, I need to overcome my hesitation. I keep starting a sentence, regretting it, deleting, restarting; if this keeps up it's going to take me all day to write a thousand words. Normally I put on a playlist of lofi music, blurt out the first idea I get, and see where it takes me. It's like the difference between staying home with the curtains closed and getting dressed to go out.

When I spend the evening at home, I can wear sweats, a hoodie, the only accessory is my Fitbit on my wrist, my hair is tied back in a loose ponytail. I'm perfectly comfortable. But if I have to go out for an evening, I fix my hair, I might even put on some makeup, I dress in flattering clothes, although I'm in my thirties, so even they are pretty comfortable. I might even put on the fleece-lined leggings I bought from an Instagram store, because those are the closest I will get to actual tights, and I wear my "nice" shoes. So I care how I look when I go out, and I really don't care when I stay in. Same thing with my writing.

Joining Tumblr is making me feel like I have to "fix my hair and face" as a writer. Yet I value honesty, and I want to be genuine and truthful, so I'm going to do my best to share the real me. This is the struggle. Am I the only one who feels this way? Am I the only one who cares this much? I never wanted to be "popular" in school. I always sought out friends with similar interests to me. My happy place is a bookstore that also serves coffee. I volunteered at a library and that was my favorite job of all time. Books play such a vital role in my life: reading them and writing them. I think I wrote enough for one day. I dipped my toe, so to speak.

sketchbook

In the first half of the eighth grade, Lucy was shuffled into an art class at school. She’d originally been selected to write for the school newsletter, but the class conflicted with her French, which she refused to give up (or, as she said to Principal Davies, “Je refuse de quitter mon cours de français.”). After her public failure to cut a paper snowflake four years earlier, being forced to take an art class was her worst nightmare. In the end, it turned out to be not so bad: She got to sit next to Sam, and with Ms. LaRue’s permission, they sat there and listened to The Beatles. Two and a half years later, whenever she hears “Dear Prudence,” she thinks about Sam and his love for oil pastels. She’s also kept her required sketchbook.

To this day, Lucy’s not really sure why she kept the sketchbook. When she was fourteen, she said it would be a metaphor for her struggles. Now, at sixteen, whenever she opens it, she just sees a bunch of really ugly attempts at drawings. And now that she’s dating Will, that’s exactly what he sees, too.

He’s up in her room on a Friday night at the end of April. Lucy’s still a little surprised her parents let him up there, but they don’t worry about Will (“He’s a nerd,” her mother whispers to her father, and she’s not wrong.). Within seconds, Will is looking through her bookshelf, trying to measure his own intelligence against the books Lucy owns.

“Read that, read that, heard of that,” he says, tracing his index finger along the old spines. “Read that, never heard of that, read that … what’s this?”

Lucy watches as Will pulls something odd from the shelf. But it’s not a book like Dracula or North and South. It’s a sketchbook. Her eighth-grade sketchbook.

Her heart leaps into her throat, and she makes a mad dash to steal the book away.

“Don’t look in there!” she says.

“Why?” Will asks. “Did you draw pictures of me or something?”

“No, of course not. Will, just …”

But before she can finish her plea, Will has already opened the sketchbook. And before she can protest again, he’s already made his judgment.

“Whoa,” he says, flipping through the pages. “These are … Callaghan, do you even know what a pencil is supposed to do? Besides solve math problems.”

Lucy snatches the book away from Will and holds it close to her chest. She frowns.

“I have trouble with my fine motor skills,” she says. “You know that. Anything from tying my shoes to drawing a picture, I … I need a minute.”

“Yeah, but … I don’t think I ever saw evidence like this before.”

“Evidence of what?”

“That you’re not good at everything.”

Lucy drops the sketchbook to the ground and marches toward the door. Will is faster. He rushes in front of her and barricades the door with the sweetest eyes Lucy has ever seen. It’s a good thing she didn’t really want to leave the room, anyway.

“Whoa, whoa, wait,” he says, voice gentle as ever. “I didn’t mean that as an insult.”

“How was I supposed to take it, then?” Lucy asks. “As a compliment?”

“No, that’s not … look, you know I think you’re amazing.”

Lucy fights hard not to blush. Even if Will is her boyfriend, she can’t let it slip that she’s in love with him.

“But when you … look, if you can’t draw, then it’s like … it’s like you’re a real human,” Will says. “Like you’re not perfect.”

Lucy makes a face.

“Am I not supposed to be perfect?” she asks.

Will smiles at her like she’s pretty close to perfect, anyway.

“I think you know that,” he says. “Perfect isn’t fun.”

Lucy smiles, a little too shy than she wants to be. She grabs Will around the waist and kisses him, almost embarrassed to do so. He looks embarrassed, too. Sweet.

“Those drawings, however,” Will says, and Lucy smacks him across the chest.

“I’ll keep them around,” she says. “Just for you.”

And to this day, that sketchbook from the fall of 1980 is right there, in the middle of Lucy and Will’s bookshelf.

February was busier than January (how can it possibly be busier? ^^), but having habits in place makes it easier to study Japanese daily. I tried focusing on Reading skills in January and Listening skills in February, and I enjoyed having a specific area to focus on, so I think I will continue to focus on a specific skill area each month.

なんか2月は1月よりもっと忙しかったのに、毎日日本語を勉強する習慣があるのはとても役に立つですね。1月は読解に集中して、そして2月は聴解に目的して、これからも月々一つのスキルに力を込めるつもりです。

My 2023 Goals Progress

I laid out some broad goals for my Japanese study in my 2023 Japanese Language Goals post, so here I will update my progress towards these goals.

1. Read one page a day of 日本の歴史366 (にほんのれきし366) everyday in 2023.

Going very well! I have been keeping up (I fell behind once and it took a while to catch back up after only 2 days) and I take notes on vocabulary I don't know.

2. Finish 日本語総まとめ N3 (にほんごそうまとめ N3) workbooks.

I haven't had as much time to go through the Sou-matome N3 workbooks as I would like, but I hope that once work calms down in mid-March I can make more progress on them.

3. Review and learn the first 6 levels of the 常用漢字 (じょうようかんじ), specifically the 教育漢字 (きょういくかんじ) up to grade 6.

I haven't been tackling the Joyo Kanji as much as I had hoped, and instead I have been working with kanji from my readings, so I will again try to bring this goal to the forefront for my March studies.

4. Read at least one book every two months.

I definitely took on too many books in January, and in February I still struggled to get through them. I haven't finished any of the books I wanted to, but I also haven't picked up any new books. One of the books I have been going through and recording the vocabulary I don't know page-by-page, so that is taking up a lot of time. I hope to finish it by April, and perhaps take some time to read manga (and not vocabulary-mine) in between.

5. Improve my speaking and writing by finding a tutor.

This goal is still on hold until April due to work. I am trying to write in the meantime though, and then I hope to search for a tutor on italki and make a weekly tutoring schedule.

6. Study Japanese for at least 10 minutes a day.

Going strong! Having a 10 minute goal often leads to a jumping-off point where I spend more time than I had intended on studying Japanese. This isn't a bad thing, but I find that I am more often actively studying Japanese in place of watching shows or consuming other media, and sometimes I need to remind myself to take a break ^.^

February Study Log

Compared with January, my study time with each skill area hasn't varied too greatly. That being said, I spent relatively less time with vocabulary and kanji, and more time with reading, grammar, writing, and speaking.

花野井くんと恋の病 (manga) - started Jan. 1st (30% done - currently on pause)

Listening - I focused on listening to podcasts in February, especially during my commute. I have done JLPT-focused listening practice a couple of times this month and will try to do one JLPT listening practice a week going forward.

Study 常用漢字 more frequently and purposefully

Focus on my Writing in March by writing one sentence every day (and getting them corrected at the end of the week)

Try out a new app - I've downloaded a few different apps that I would like to try out in some detail

Read 満月珈琲店の星詠み to the halfway point

I feel like this year is already flying by, so I am trying to be very mindful and conscientious of what I am studying. I am trying to keep my goals manageable for the time I have available and the things that I want to accomplish. Working towards what you want to accomplish is important, but don't forget to take time to do something fun and take a break every once in a while!

A Year in Cyberpunk

Ok, since I’m an author, I can do the cool thing photomodders and artists did. But I still wanted to… look back on this year of Cyberpunk. So this will be a long text post where I’ll share with you tidbits about the making off of the various fictions I wrote this year, and how the fandom made this past twelve months amazing!

You'll also get hints about what you can expect from me in the future ;)

January

I didn’t write anything in January, because I was actually just discovering the game. Interestingly, I didn’t expect anything from that game, I had not been waiting for it, I totally forgot it existed and its release just went over my head for reasons I can’t explain. Anyway, the only thing I knew about that game was that Keany Reeves had been drunk on stage while promoting it, and that it had been, for me, a very cringe moment because I hate seeing drunk people in such circumstances. Thankfully for Keanu, it went well overall. So anyway, I was playing the game.

February

I started writing You Shall Build no Church Upon Me. First fanfiction in over five years, first fiction in this fandom, first fiction in English. I wanted it to be just a few pages, it evolved into 78k words. The story revolves around Johnny and Male!V coming back from beyond the Black Wall under the command of Alt, ten years after the events of the game. Alt needs to get her army of AIs on the other side, and V and Johnny are missioned to find bodies for her and the 8 AIs she intends to be her apostles. I went hard on the religious theme here, with alt being a monstrous goddess trying to take over humanity, and V who actually believes (for a moment) that she is right. Every chapter’s title was named after a line from the bibble, but this fanfiction is actually a LONG pamphlet against religion in any form. The title is a throwback to Jesus saying to Peter he would be the first stone on which he would build his church. Here, V has the role of Peter. Looking back to it, not only these are very serious themes for fanfiction, but it’s also so full of typos it hurts my eyes to read it over. I know I must do so once more to tidy it up but I just cringe so hard every time I try. Kudos to the people who still read it, and also went over the fact that I killed Kerry in that one. My main ship was indeed Johnny/Male!V, but I did give Kerry a good, absolutely heartbreaking death.

March

I published You Shall Build no Church Upon Me, and once again felt the anxiety of publishing, waiting for reactions… And the terrible feeling when nothing happens ahah. Not the best experience in my life, I’ll admit, but it pushed me to do better afterward. And it did get a few people enthusiastic about it, so in the end, it was fine.

April

I told my partner I would write only one fanfiction and then be done. As you can imagine, this didn’t go well. I decided to write another one based on one scene stuck in my head: My V, bursting mid-samurai concert to kill bad guys who wanted to kill Johnny and Kerry. In the meantime, I had time to “change pairing” and add Kerry to the mix. So now I have this OT3 that I just can’t let go. This fiction, All of My Heroes are Dead, was also prompted by ThornWild's Chase the Morning, also with the OT3, because at one point he replied in one comment to me that he wasn’t sure the OT3 would happen. And I was like “What ?! But I WANT IT ?!!!” So I made it: never better served but by yourself! (the OT3 does happen in CtM, though ;)). Again I told myself “it’s gonna be just a few chapters”… it ended being 140k words long, if you take the accompanying backstories. And it was a wild ride. I was still alone with that fic, still unclear on most of Cyberpunk’s lore so this fic is… quite messy on that front, I would say? But overall, it was better than the first one for sure and I can actually read it over without totally cringing. Again, I went with a theme for chapters: it all revolves around greek gods, and the greek heroes Herakles (Johnny), Orpheus (Kerry), and Ulysses (V) in their journey to find happiness. Angst with happy endings, always!

May/June

I published All of My Heroes are Dead. On this occasion, I met the fantastic @strandhai, who would afterward become my Beta-reader and friend. She put a comment under every chapter, allowing me to experience the story from a reader's point of view and it was a heady feeling! We started talking like this, and then on Tumblr and then…

July

I decided to fill prompts. I had seen Hrimthur do it and I wanted to try my hand at that. At first, I thought it might be only three or four prompts, and that it would be it. It wasn’t. After the first four prompts or so, my inbox got a bit full, to the point I had once seven prompts waiting for me while I was writing one. But by god, I really couldn’t complain because it was so much fun having all these prompts, and finding the angle I liked to reply to them. And of course, the feedback was amazingly positive and that was all the encouragement I needed. At first, I tried to limit myself to 2k words per prompt… It lasted for the five first and then totally got away ahah. Some prompt evolved into full fanfiction, and I wrote more for some of them, mainly the Panam/male!V one, which ended up with three more chapters (and soon, a sequel… soonish!). Special mention to the silverdynes prompts, which really were the dearest to me. I really loved exploring their relationship, and to this day I wrote a full sequel for two of them about Johnny going to therapy, which remains one of my favorite works. I also decided to give all those prompts names, and french names because I’m a proud french girl ahah.

August

Following the prompts, I decided to join the Cyberpunk Bigbang Challenge. And with that, got introduced to the Cyberpunk discord servers. First the one from the Big Bang, and then later two more. Suddenly I met the whole community of the fandom, some of which I already knew thanks to tumblr, but also new people. And with that, help with the lore, and the characterization. And a lot of fun. And a f*** tons of plot bunnies! I roped Strandhai into joining after a while too, and that’s where our friendship really bloomed, I think.

September

Being on the Lizzie Server, I got into a lively convo about Kerry’s kinks, which started the Lizzie's Villa Eurodyne Smut Extravaganza. I only filled two prompts out of the four or five, but it was so much fun! It’s really nice to participate in such events with other authors, the three of them being people I admire a lot, so I was feeling very… shy, but also wanted to prove myself worthy. It birthed The Eye of the Storm, and Enough!. I particularly loved writing The Eye of the Storm because I love writing soft!Kerry. When I wrote this one, it was like I had stamped a post-it note on my brain with “BE DELICATE” written on it aha. I treated Kerry like the precious being he is, and had V worship him like he deserves. Enough! On the other hand, is the other facette of Kerry: the wild, chaotic, power-bottom and assertive man he also is. In that one, he put V into his place and it was really thrilling to write too. Completely different, and a good exercise. I think I always perceived these two facets in him, but it was fun to play with one and then the other separately. Enough! Was also my first real BDMS scene, so I was a bit anxious, but it went fine, I think. Both these works will get sequels. Enough! Was also our training session with Strandhai, as she beta-read it for me.

October

It was a big month! it was the official launch of the Big Bang Challenge. I had already started writing after much internal debate about what I would write. I briefly considered a fusion between Pirates of the Caribean, before discarding it. I thought it might be too long and complex. I only I had known what I was throwing myself into by choosing the other idea. What would Become Until we Meet Again was prompted by the question: how would Johnny and Kerry have reacted if V died? And it was on. The plot is actually fairly simple, it’s a psychological tale before anything else, and an epic love story about soulmates. And it grew SO MUCH. From the beginning, I knew it would span between 2023 and 2077 with heavy use of flashbacks. I kept adding more scenes to really explore their relationship the first time, and then their grief. The central piece was how Johnny and Kerry coped after he was killed in the Arasaka raid in 2023 by Smasher. Spoiler alert, they cope it as well as you could expect it: badly. This story once again had heavy themes: love, grief, letting go, change, self-love, self-forgiveness, and the consequences of resurrection. As well as a good dose of technobabble surrounding the engram tech. And a lot of sex ahah. Fun fact, this fiction was first named The Ghost in Me, but because ghost themes were so present in the Big Bang, and that Thornwild also had Ghost in his title for his BB fiction, I decided to change it, fearing it would bring confusion.

When I was ready to start vomiting that fic (because trust me, it took a lot from me, that I gladly gave it but sometimes it was a bit too much) I wrote something else. I wrote Down on my knees, which is the sequel to Si la chute est belle, one of the Silverdynes prompts. Down on my Knees, apart from being the sequel to those prompts, was also born following All These Scars, the first installment of the Difficult to Love series by AtomicPunk. Spoiler ahead: in that fic, Johnny leaves Kerry after a night of comfort sex following Kerry being kidnapped, by putting a ring on his finger as he sleeps. And it made something burst in my brain because suddenly, I wanted to see them married. With AtomicPunk’s permission, I took the idea and wrote my take on it. It is, I think, one of my favorite works to this day. When I read it over, I’m just super happy with the result, for one, and just… I just love them so much. I know it might be weird to talk about it that way, because I wrote it, but this one, I felt like it came on its own, I’m rediscovering it each time, and I like it every time ahah.

November

Due date for the challenge was coming. I was on time, but with the clear impression that I was late. I experienced a small but terrifying writer block and that was the part where I absolutely HATED Until we Meet Again. It wouldn’t finish. It wouldn’t write itself. I started second-guessing EVERYTHING, every scene, and losing confidence in it, and in myself. I was persuaded no one would read it because it would be too long, and the paring wouldn’t help, and that it was too heavy for fanfiction. UWMA is not really a fanfiction. It is in the sense it uses characters that are not my own, but let's be honest, this story is not what people expect out of a fanfiction. This is a journey across serious themes, not a relaxing fix-it to read after work. BUT. Strandhai was here, cheering me up, pouring all her love into this fanfiction when I just couldn’t look at it anymore. She kept saying it was good and she puts so much energy into it that I started believing it again. And then @ophani showed us her first pics for the fic. And I could have cried. Suddenly it was even more alive, suddenly it wasn’t just words but also pictures. Suddenly it was even more of a teamwork. And the feeling was amazing! We also had the late addiction of Chastad, because as Ophani is a cosplayer, she couldn’t do all the three characters (kudos to her BF for that, though!), so Chastad came here to fill up that wish we all had to have artwork with all three. And it was amazing. I had snippets of the process and got excited for days. It allowed me to finish reading the fic over, gave me the energy to change back the things that needed changing. Like the last two sex scenes that just wouldn't come at first!!!!! And finally, the due date was here, with publication going over the whole last week of November. By that time, I had made peace with the fact this work probably wouldn’t be read a lot. To this day I’m still positively surprised it got as much recognition as it did, and I sincerely hope people will continue to read it and enjoy it!

December

Well, I can’t say much about December, but I’m participating in Secret Santa! Writing the fic for secret Santa was a pure delight. It came very easy, I like the result, and I believe I filled the giftee’s wishes so now I’m just brimming with excitation at the prospect of posting it for them!!! I’m also preparing one, maybe two surprises for Xmas and New year’s eve! So stay tuned ^^.

Overall

This was an incredible year of creativity! Not only in writing, but with drawings too. I mostly drew Kerry, because he is such an inspiration for a lot of us, but also Johnny, or the both of them. You can find the arts here.

As a token of our friendship, I sent the original drawings to Strandhai and Ophani: they now have a life of their own, out of my sketchbook and I like that a lot!

Meeting the community was also super great, I made friends here, and spent a lot of time having very funny and/or deep conversations with amazing people. So, in a word: THANK YOU, thank you cyberpunk, and thank you CDPR! It might not be perfect, but it’s a great game!! And of course, thank you fandom!!! Thank you readers for your kudos, comments and encouragements!!!
