Podcast Review: ことのは
Tumblr media
Podcast Title: 日本語の会話のpodcast −ことのは−
(にほんごのかいわのpodcast −ことのは−)
Available On: Spotify, YouTube
Ease of Listening: ★★★★★
Length of Episodes: ★★★★★
Level of Engagement: ★★★★★
Episode Frequency: ★★★★★
Overall: ★★★★★
Today I will be reviewing the Japanese conversation podcast ことのは (Kotonoha) by Yamamo-sensei and Kibi-sensei. They have episodes for all levels, separated by JLPT level N5-N1 and labeled so you can determine which episodes best suit your level or challenge yourself with a higher level.
Do I currently listen to this podcast?: Yes, I like this podcast a lot and listen to it frequently.
General Overview
Good For Levels: Beginner | Intermediate | Advanced
In this series, Yamamo and Kibi, two Japanese language teachers based in Japan, speak on a variety of topics in a conversation style of podcast. The conversation-style format is good for training your ear to listen to questions and responses, and every day banter between two speakers. They talk about Japanese culture and their own personal experiences which gives listeners an insight to the particulars of daily life in Japan.
Length of Episodes ★★★★★
The podcasts are usually around 20-30 minutes long. This is ideal for a commute or when you have some down time. They cover 2-3 subtopics within each topic they pick, so the conversations are very interesting and catch my attention and they don't seem too short or too long. They plan out each conversation topic carefully and keep it interesting and informative.
Level of Engagement ★★★★★
The conversation format is very engaging because they cover 2-3 subtopics within the main topic and structure the conversation to focus on each point of the topic. They keep the listener engaged with carefully planned-out topics and conversations, and there is obviously a lot of work that goes into their podcast. They match the vocabulary and pace of speaking with the level they are targeting, but even in the higher level podcasts I believe beginners would be able to catch the general flow of the conversation and challenge themselves to understand the content.
Episode Frequency ★★★★★
New podcasts come out once a week, and with the planning that goes into each episode it's a very good pace. There is also a lot of episodes already produced so you can go through them fairly quickly without running out of material.
Overall ★★★★★
This podcast is designed by two Japanese language teachers to convey information about Japanese culture completely in Japanese. The episodes are labeled by JLPT difficulty and I find the label system to be very accurate. It is a good podcast with which to practice your listening skills for every day conversation and to learn a bit more about Japanese culture.

Hi! What is on your TBR list for 2024?
Hi, thanks for asking about my TBR! While I haven't nailed down a super detailed list to work through, there are some novels that I've been eyeing for a while now and I hope this year I will get around to reading them!
medium by Aizawa Sako A supernatural mystery that caught my eye after reading JTalkOnline's review about it last year.
本を守ろうとする猫の話 by Natsukawa Sosuke I admit I was mostly captured by the pretty cover ;) I don't know much about the plot, but am looking forward to be surprised.
十角館の殺人 by Ayatsuji Yukito Missed the 2022 book club on Natively for this serial killer mystery and is has been on my TBR ever since. Maybe this year!
鹿の王 by Uehashi Nahoko Tried it twice in 2023, stumbled with the language and never processed past the first 50 pages. Maybe third time's the charm haha
すべて真夜中の恋人たち by Kawakami Mieko I've been curious about the author and picked up this book by her because it was rated positively. I don't know anything about the plot, so this one's a surprise too.
ビブリア古書堂の事件手帖 by Mikami En This light novel series was a spontaneous haul last year! It's about a secondhand bookstore and mysteries so it seemed to be right up my alley :)
For 2023 it was my goal to read one novel each month, but I soon realized that this proved incompatible with working full time. So for 2024 I'm aiming for 6-8 novels in Japanese.

📷 ⭐️ 💝 for the ask game ^.^
Thank you for the ask Toki!
📷 Share your favorite picture you’ve taken while traveling!
Okay, this one was kind of hard. I have a lot of photos that I feel like people would find more interesting/braggable, like I have photos of when I saw stuff like Michelangelo's David or The Birth of Venus, stuff that I can very easily be like "look at how impressive this is that I've seen this" (although I guess mentioning that I have them kinda achieves that anyway, lol), but my favorite was this slightly blurry, lengthwise panoramic of the sky I took the night after I saw all those art pieces.
Tumblr media
It's not the most visually impressive photo, but I just remember taking it so vividly and thinking the gradient was so pretty and it's stuck way more as a memory than my photos of all of the ~famous stuff~ I've been lucky enough to see.
⭐️ What inspires you to learn languages?
As cheesy as it is, because I love learning them. Languages feel really intuitive for me, they click really easily, so it's a really enjoyable experience compared to things like STEM work where I spend the entirety of assignments on the brink of tears not understanding what I'm doing. I have a lot of fun learning them because they're a challenge with certain aspects, but it fundamentally makes sense to me. I also really love being able to understand important cultural stuff on a more full level and be able to enjoy pop culture stuff in the source language and get untranslatable jokes and stuff like that.
💝 What is a compliment you like to receive?
Being told my speaking sounds natural. I put a lot of effort into trying to pick up on how I hear native speakers speak to sound natural when I do speaking exams and stuff, so it's always really nice to hear. Also, I tend to misunderstand at least one question in my speaking exams and answer completely weird, so knowing that my flow is natural despite that always helps soften the blow of knowing I totally messed up, haha.

Mar 2023 Seitokai Bookclub | とつくにの少女
Hi friends! The Seitokai Bookclub is STILL ongoing--the only reason why you haven't seen a post about it lately is because we were still reading コンビニ人間. However, starting on Feb 26, we will be reading とつくにの少女 (Totsukuni no Shoujo), also known as The Girl from the Other Side. If you're interested in joining us or want more details on how our bookclub runs, come join us in the server or feel free to message me/drop an ask (or even @litheah and @tokidokitokyo).
What if I've never read a book in Japanese yet? I'm not confident in my skills. That's fine! Not only do we always have a group vocab sheet that we collectively add to (anonymously), but we have ongoing discussions about whatever book we're reading. That means you're free to ask questions, send screenshots, rant about a character or anything like that. You'll definitely find me asking about certain grammar points or if using a particular set of kanji for a word changes the nuance in a particular sentence.
What's the goal of your bookclub? Well, we're interested in fostering confidence in reading in your target language without feeling that you have no one to turn to. Our server has people of all levels of fluency, meaning that there's always someone who can answer your question. And if we can't, we have people we can reach out to ask. We won't leave you hanging!
You don't seem to choose books I'm interested in--how can I change that? Well, we take suggestions and vote as a bookclub for what we'll be reading next. If your book doesn't win the first time you submit it, try try again! とつくにの少女 was suggested and in voting 3-4 times before it finally won (same with a lot of our other books.) Don't be discouraged!
We hope to see you there! | Seitokai's Nihongo Discord Server

I'm so so sorry to bother you. I've been looking for a certain post you may have reblogged about how to get started on writing a diary for practicing skills and such... and I found that info very useful and interesting... but I don't remember if it was you or some other blog. But, please if you may know about it or any tips on writing a diary in Japanese, could you please share? It would be very much appreciated
Hi there! You aren't bothering me, it's no trouble. Maybe this was the post you saw? (I'm linking to @nyahongo 's recent addition.)
@tokidokitokyo also just posted this with some great tips on getting started writing in a foreign language.
Keeping a diary is an excellent idea for practicing languages. If you want to practice but can't think of what to say, you can simply draw off what you did today:
今日学校に行きました。宿題をしました。 Today I went to school. I did homework.
And as you continue to practice and learn new things, your sentences can become more complicated:
昨日学校に行ったけど、今日は土曜日から行きませんでした。宿題はまだ終わってないです。 Though yesterday I went to school, today is Saturday so I didn't go. My homework isn't finished yet.
Try not to look up too many things as you write. Maybe you won't have the vocabulary yet to talk about everything you want to, but it's important to work with what you have learned to really make it stick. If you recently learned a new word or grammatical structure - try incorporating it into a sentence! Your entries don't need to be long or perfect; the important part is that you're putting in regular practice.
がんばってね!

レタスクラブ
I wanted to recommend レタスクラブ to advanced Japanese learners.
Tumblr media
レタスクラブ (Lettuce Club) is a site that has both レシピ and 読み物 that someone introduced me to recently. I came for the 読み物, but the レシピ looks good too.
I have been reading through some of the comics under the 読み物 section 趣味, which has a variety of artists and themes to choose from. This is definitely a site for advanced readers, but if you'd like to try to navigate around the site you can practice reading.
Start Here for Comics, then try:
趣味
くらし
育児・子育て
Happy reading!

What Kinds of Content Do People Want?
Since I'm trying to get back into posting more regularly, I thought I'd go directly to the people who'd be seeing my posts and ask: What sorts of things are you looking for?
I know having to pick a top choice is kinda difficult, so if people want to rank several of them or add further comments in the notes please do! I just want to see what people are looking for more of, I (and I'm sure others!) want to make posts that people feel like they aren't seeing enough of
Also, I'm not including challenges on the poll (I feel like even the number of options on it now is a little bit too many, haha) but I know those are always fun as well!
Tagging a few people I chatted with about this! (Aka tagging the people I couldn't find tracked tags for, lol)

are you in the discord thingy that @onigiriforears and @tokidokitokyo are in?
No. I have trouble navigating/using the app, so I haven't used it for a long time (I remember creating an account there, and gave up immediately because I am very confused to the interface 😅).... Now, I only open discord app when my friend messaged me.

life lately // enjoying myself so hard it's getting dangerous 🤭
in this issue 🔍: brain-rot target language input 🇯🇵🇨🇳🇰🇷 & if icarus was a workaholic 👩‍💻✍️🍝
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"language learning" but it's just brain-rot 🧠
🇯🇵 Shogun (9/10) — objectively a really good show, but a lot of death and triggering topics for me personally 🥺
🇯🇵 Spy x Family (5/10) — i can only watch one episode at a time now because the plot is getting increasingly ridiculous, please don't be mad at me if you're a fan 😅
🇨🇳 When I Fly Towards You (6/10) — it's silly, but it's also just what you expect from kids of the characters' ages and at times it does tickle that part of my brain that likes candy (i still like Exclusive Fairytale better though, 对不起 张陆让)
🇯🇵 Petrichor 花鋏 キョウ (10/10) — my new favorite album!! ☺️ even @pianistbynight likes this one and she usually prefers classical music!
🇰🇷 Seventeen on Shuffle (10/10) — my usual suspects never miss 😌
too close to the sun but finally looking in the mirror ☀️🪞
i gave myself a headache from working too much in poor physical conditions again 😭 i didn't notice until the end of the day because i was on a roll at work and it's rare when that happens, so in a messed up way, i feel it was worth it?? i bought a new chair and rearranged my desk setup a little to be more ergonomic, but that only does so much when i have one good night of sleep a week 🙃
my poor sleep is low-key my own fault though since i write and binge cinema therapy videos late into the night because i love doing those things so much that my brain won't shut up until i do them 😛
in other news, i made my favorite pasta recipe!! 😋 but i burned myself and didn't notice until i started washing the dishes in hot water ♨️ wow, me enjoying myself so much i don't notice i'm hurting myself is a real theme here... 🙈 something to work out in detail in my diary some time 🤔
💌: how's life been treating you lately? 💐
Tumblr media
bonus: @pianistbynight tagged me in this fun picrew game (how you look now vs when you were younger) and it made me miss my good eyesight 🥲 everyone, take good care of your eyes by taking lots of outdoor breaks (with UV protection!!) 👀

Ok but I love the green lawn-clipping grass flavour of matcha ^^ I think that's one of the main reason I enjoy matcha sweets....
I think that must be the appeal for most people! I don't mind that flavor either, until you add sugar or cream 😄

風物詩(ふうぶつし) = signs of the season
when you think of your favorite season, what comes to mind? is it seeing cardinals in a snowy winter scene? maybe it’s when the 桜(さくら, cherry blossoms) bloom in march or the 紫陽花(あじさい, hydrangeas) bloom in june. in japanese, the word 風物詩 refers to things—events, objects, plants and animals, flavors and scents, even products—that evoke or are reminiscent of a certain season of the year. here’s weblio’s definition of 風物詩, plus an example:
その季節の感じをよく表しているもの。「金魚売りは夏の風物詩」
here, 金魚売り(きんぎょうり, goldfish selling) is mentioned as a summertime 風物詩. there are also lots of examples on ja.wikipedia:
春(はる, spring)

「習う」と「学ぶ」の違いは何?
what’s the difference between these two verbs for “to learn”?
well, as it turns out, the difference has to do with how you learned the information you’re referring to—namely, whether you learned from another person or not. check out this explanation from a hinative thread:
習う・・・人から教わる(おそわる)こと / to be taught by someone
学ぶ・・・知識や技芸を身につけること / to acquire some knowledge or skill
学ぶには、学習する、勉強するという意味もあります / 学ぶ can also mean to 学習する or 勉強する.
so, 習う is for things you learn from people and 学ぶ is for things you learn from books, etc., or as a synonym for studying. here are some examples (from the same hinative thread):
本を読んで英語を学びました。 (never 習いました)
ピアノを母から習いました。 (not 学びました)
example 1 specifies that the new information comes from a book, while example 2 specifies that it comes from the speaker’s mom. it seems like such a fundamental difference between the two, but i know i for one had never heard of it before!
anyways, i hope this quick little lesson was helpful. また今度ね!

「大体」と「たいてい」の違いは何?
Tumblr media
i recently posed this question to the seitokai discord and @onigiriforears came up with a lot of resources, so i thought i’d share what i learned! example sentences are adapted from jisho. 行くよ!
大体(だいたい) = roughly, approximately
this word is used in situations where you have to approximate or estimate something. it’s kind of similar to 約(やく) in that way.
大体正しいです。 = that’s mostly right.
大体わかる。 = i get the gist.
大体息子と同じ年齢です。 = he’s about the same age as my son.
大体準備ができた。 = everything is more or less ready.

how to form basic verbs in keigo / 敬語の動詞の形
Tumblr media
n.b.: if you don’t know the difference between 尊敬語 (sonkeigo) and 謙譲語 (kenjougo), or much about 敬語 (keigo) in general, i recommend a quick google search or glancing over an article like this one! also, i won’t be glossing any kanji, bc i’m lazy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
みなさん、お久しぶりですね! today i’m going to guide you guys through the verb forms for japanese 敬語. 敬語 can be pretty tricky, but the rules for forming 敬語 verbs (like many rules in japanese) are actually quite consistent.
there are three 尊敬語 (honorific) forms i’m going to go over today: the Vください form, the Vになります form, and the “simple 尊敬語” form. i’ll also give a brief list of verbs that have specific forms in 尊敬語. after that, i’ll go over one 謙譲語 (humble) form, the Vします form, and then a list of 謙譲語-specific verb forms. さて、行きましょう!
尊敬語:お・ごVください
this form is used to say “please” to a superior, but it doesn’t use the 〜て form like in 丁寧語. here’s how to form it with ichidan, godan, and する verbs.
ichidan/godan verbs: おVますください
かける → かけます → ソファにおかけください
入る → 入ります → どうぞお入りください
する verbs: ごNするください
注意する → 閉まるドアにご注意ください
尊敬語:おVになります
this form is used as a more formal replacement for the usual Vます form, but shouldn’t be used with する verbs* OR verbs that have special forms in 敬語 (see below).
ichidan/godan verbs: おVますになります
書く → 書きます → この教科書は鈴木先生がお書きになりました
帰る → 帰ります → 何時にお帰りになりましたか
する verbs: ❌*
❌ ご説明になりました*
⭕️ 説明なさいました・説明されました (see below)
*according to the textbook i’m using (see sources), these are incorrect. however, i have seen some posts online that say ごNになります is an acceptable form, so it’s not impossible you’ll see it in the wild (perhaps the times they are a-changing?).
尊敬語:簡単尊敬語 (aka the “active passive”)
have you ever seen a japanese verb in the passive and said to yourself, “actually that makes no sense at all”? it was probably one of these “simple 尊敬語” forms! they are used like the active voice but written like the passive, so you have to tell the difference from context. also, they are NOT used with ください.
ichidan verbs: Vないられます
食べる → 食べない → 刺身を食べられますか
godan verbs: Vないれます
読む  →  読まない → 今朝の新聞を読まれましたか
する verbs: Nするされます
紹介する → 先生が新しい学生を紹介されました
ください form: ❌
❌ 英語で話されてください

My #1 post of 2022
okami fun fact!
Tumblr media
while all other characters in okami (as far as i know) are labeled with their canon names in issun’s paintings, shiranui is labeled NOT as 不知火 (shiranui) but as 初代 (shodai), which means “first era” or the “first one” in a line of something! it makes sense since he’s meant to be ammy from a hundred years ago.
in this painting above, ammy is labeled 天照 (amaterasu) and oki is labeled オキクルミ (okikurmi). also, issun appears to sign his paintings as 天道太子 一寸 (tentou taishi issun), meaning “celestial envoy issun.” while the homophone 大使 (taishi) means “ambassador,” which is closer in meaning to envoy, the okami devs have written it 太子, which usually means “crown prince.” maybe they chose to do that to emphasize issun’s tiny size using the character 子, which means “child,” along with 太, which can refer to the sun? honestly i’m not sure. or maybe issun has since appointed himself ammy’s earthly heir LOL 🪲👑
anyways, i just thought this was kinda interesting! if anyone knows any other examples of this, please feel free to add them on!! またね :)
