#i really love post-crisis nightwing comics you guys
Text
nightwing secret files | nightwing 139
so in nightwing secret files and origins, there's a hurt/comfort storyline called "lost pages: teen titans." dick's robin and he's grieving for his parents and having a hard time, and he's gone off on his own, and wally comes and finds him. and then in nightwing 139, there's a hurt/comfort story where tim's robin, and he's grieving and he's gotten kidnapped and tempted into trying to resurrect his loved ones, and dick comes and finds him.
both of these comics are wonderful & i would now like to share my favorite parallels.
brooding over memories:
Tumblr media
anger turning into tears:
Tumblr media
outstretched hand of affection:
Tumblr media
teary removal of mask:
Tumblr media
hugs and family:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyway i love these stories separately but i also love all the little ways they echo each other <333
#i really love post-crisis nightwing comics you guys#something something paying it forward#history doesn't repeat itself but it does rhyme#dick grayson#tim drake#dick & tim#this is a little hard to articulate and obviously the storylines are very different but there's still something compelling to me here#both about dick and tim's similarities and about the role of friendship in their lives#one aspect of dick and tim's brotherhood that i like a lot is that in some ways in his relationship with tim#dick is often the kind of friend that his titans friends have been to him - and i find those parallels really moving#often he's got an instinct for the right thing to say or do because tim's dealing with things he's been through before#and he also ends up kinda low-key revisiting some of his own issues because tim has a bunch of the same ones#because their issues are so similar dick's attitude toward tim is sometimes kind of a proxy for his attitude toward his younger self#like in graduation day when he's being hard on tim in pretty much the exact ways he's hard on himself#and donna's pushing him to be more understanding but of course that's the precise thing that dick's bad at doing#because he doesn't know how to cut himself any slack ever about anything#which makes it doubly touching to me when he gets past that#because it's not just about extending grace to tim but also to himself#which is really hard because it's really hard for dick to forgive himself for anything#so it's the collision of his uncompromising attitude toward himself and his love for tim#and the love always wins in the end *cries*#parallels

what would u say it takes for a fic to get kon's tone correctly? or like. what things do u feel make the tone Wrong? (if u can put it into words ik this is a very vague question LMAO)
so in essence you are asking me to distill kon as a character. i will attempt to do this, but preemptively be warned i will likely be rambling.
there are a few things about kon that always stand out to me. i draw a lot on sb94 for his overall character, with sb11 and adventure comics to guide his character arc. to me, he is, in no particular order:
incredibly smart
but exceedingly hard on himself,
and prone to self-deprecation.
silly and goofy! a geek-ass loser!!
full of joie de vivre!
deeply, deeply passively suicidal.
quick to anger (mostly when younger)
but even quicker to cool off and apologize if necessary.
too quick, even. very forgiving of anything done to him, no matter how fucked up, if he thinks the person is genuinely sorry.
kind. kind. kind. kind. he wants to believe in everyone.
prone to naivety, because of it. (again, especially when younger.)
ready and willing to destroy himself if it helps someone else even a little bit. a bleeding heart that maybe bleeds too much.
deeply, deeply caring. about everyone. especially the folks nobody else really cares about.
pretty introspective (post-death and resurrection).
passionate. he does not do anything by halves.
haha silly!!! jokester!!! star trek time!!! wahoo!!!
so as you can see, he is a character built on contradiction. he loves life, but he's been suicidal since day one. he's a lot smarter than anyone, including himself, gives him credit for - he might not be the best strategist out there, but his creativity and ability to think on his feet are phenomenal! he's deeply kind to the core and yet worries about who he is, because he can't see himself how anyone else does. i could go on. it's about the contradictions - the kontrast, if you will.
in terms of fic writing, character voice, and tone: imagine a boy in the basement of a fucked up science lab surrounded by the frozen-in-stasis corpses of his twelve would-be brothers, the clones before him that didn't pan out. he is white-knuckling his gloves. he is repeating to himself, but i stay silly :3!! but i stay silly :3!! but i stay silly :3!! but i stay--
this, too, is about the kontrast. denial and humor are his best friends and his favorite coping mechanisms.
to me, i guess a fic gets kon right if it understands he is an unreliable fucking narrator. he's incredibly repressed. he just denies it all and pretends he's fine because he can joke it off. he stays silly!! X3!! but he's a genuinely sweet and thoughtful guy. he does all the farm chores for ma kent without being asked, loves his dog, has nightwing merch (a zine, specifically, from the looks of it) in his room, and physically is incapable of shutting up about star trek. he's a geek. he's silly. he's loving. he's deeply sad. he's a walking talking identity crisis.
also wrt fic writing. i mean i know saying this is a lost cause because anyone bothering to read a long post about kon isn't the kind of person writing fics that don't actually treat him as his own character, but. he is not fucking scared of bruce wayne oh my god. i will forever yell about these pages from sb94 #85 aka what might be my fav issue in the entire run:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
he doesn't stand for anyone being unjust, even if it's his bestie's mentor who he respects a lot!! even if he's a little nervous he tells bruce off and demands better from him!!! (granted, i also think this is some of my least favorite bruce writing ever - i don't like him sounding like a kkk manifesto someone hit find and replace on when he talks about metas, and i don't for the life of me understand why so many of his "fans" continue to eat that up and then shit it out in the year 2023, but that's getting off topic.)
ALSO. HE LOVES AND RESPECTS CLARK SO FUCKING MUCH. that's another thing fics get wrong. he does NOT resent clark for "not being around" and he does NOT tolerate anyone talking shit about him!! clark is his favorite guy. he idolizes him!! yes, he's sometimes sad about wanting to be closer to him, but never communicates this (and, again, this is also an editorial mandate). if kon was going to blame anyone for their relationship not being what he wants it to be, IT IS HIMSELF!!!! he does this literally on page in sb94, when he finds out clark has a secret identity and isn't superman all the time. he blames himself for not being someone superman would have wanted to confide in sooner. he is REALLY GOOD at blaming himself for things. he would never in his LIFE blame clark.
in conclusion. please enjoy this incredibly roumd krypto snoozing next to him in lena luthor's house. thank you for your time ♥

I know I just gave you an ask and you must be super busy, but what do you think abt Dickory vs Dickbabs?? Personally, I think Dickory is way better but in Tom Taylor’s run and the current runs, Dickbabs is the main ship. Anyways, I just wanted your opinion on it :D
Also thoughts on Tom Taylor’s run? I thought about it and I kinda have mixed feelings. On one hand, it’s great for fanservice and has some super cute and funny moments. On the other hand, the characters and their relationships are kinda one dimensional. Thoughts?? Take your time and thanks if you answer! <3
Hi, As I've said before (and I'm going to quote myself from older posts here quite a lot, if you happen to come across them 😉 ), I'm fine with both pairings as long as it's well written. I guess a lot of fans lean towards preferring what they grew up with and such like. I'm old enough to have started reading Batman when the idea of another Robin than Dick Grayson was ludicrous, and read the NTT in my slightly older teens. So I definitely have a nostalgic feeling for Dick/Kory.
I think they worked well because they were so different; they each learned from the other and grew as people. Being with Kory helped Dick become more emotionally open after some ten years of growing up with Bruce and Alfred. In NTT # 26, he talks about how he is too introspective and that Batman taught him to be guided by his head, not his heart. And in turn, I'd say Kory learned not always to be ruled by her emotions, and Dick helped to ground her on Earth. They had their fair share of problems, one obstacle was their different approach to relationships and sex. While Starfire is fine with being married to another guy, for reasons of state, but live with Dick, it takes Dick quite some time to come to terms with that he loves Kory enough to get over that. Dick and Kory were one of the most stable and loving couples in DC for over ten years. Now, in superhero comics, writers and/or editoral make the rules. There were plans to let them get married, but as far as I remember a change of editorial led to that being scrapped. We got Dick being raped by Mirage instead, and eventually, the couple split up. Disregarding that, I think you could very well see them growing apart. They were young when they started dating. I guess they were a couple for two-three years? At that age, it's not unreasonable to think they developed in ways that made them decide to go their separate ways.
If Dick and Kory were good because they were poles apart, I'd say Dick and Barbara are more alike. They have both worked with Batman; they are originally street-level detectives and athletes; they are used to work in similar ways. I could see them as a slightly more mature couple than Dick and Kory, being more in sync and relaxed with each other because they have similar backgrounds and shared experiences. (Which, of course, could make them a more boring couple in fiction…) I'm not a fan of the retcon that they've been friends since school, but they did work occasionally together as youngsters, so it can still make sense to write them as really good friends, imo. I honestly think Dick and Kory have been written as a good couple more than Dick and Barbara. Maybe things had been different if Devin Grayson had got the chance to tie up her long arc with Dick in Nightwing vol 2. Not that I think her run was without its problems, but it would presumably have been better if she had got the opportunity to finish what she started. The ending (or rather the absence of a decent ending) of her run, and the fact that the first Nightwing stories after Infinite Crisis were downright cringeworthy, has soured my impression of her writing of Dick/Babs. So I guess editorial decisions have ruined both Dick's most important relationships…?
I don't know if you're new to the debate about Dick/Kory vs. Dick/Barbara? Because it's sometimes a heated discussion, with people claiming he doesn't deserve either of them, he mistreated one or the other etc.
Tumblr media
(Here's what Barbara herself had to say about Dick, by the way. In Birds of Prey # 71. By Gail Simone, art Ron Adrian and Rob Lea.)
I can definitely work myself up too much about fictional characters myself, but there are a few things I try to keep in mind… Fictional characters have no agency. Creators and editoral use them to tell stories (and sell stuff…). Don't get angry at fictional characters or, even worse, real people who love them. Also, reading comics is a lot about filling in the blanks between panels, and different readers can put a book down with very different pictures of what has happened. You can absolutely find examples where Dick has been written as behaving badly against both of them. Sometimes, it's a reasonable part of the writer's long game, sometimes it actually is bad and out-of-character writing. (And if you look, you can find examples where the women have been written as behaving badly against Dick too.)
Honestly, the most important thing for me when it comes to Dick and relationships is that he takes them very seriously indeed. Dick has not had a lot of one-night stands and is on record as saying he's not comfortable with casual sex. When he had one with Helena/Huntress, he wanted to talk about starting a relationship just because of that. When he (fake) married a girl to try to expose her as a murderer, he still avoided to sleep with her, and then he offered to stay with her when the case was closed, because he felt bad for deceiving her. Outside the blasted annual, I don't know of any time he was written as (knowingly) having sex with someone while he's in a relationship with another. Girls tend to break up with him, not the other way around. I'm sure other people have different ideas, and it can vary between writers and eras, but I think you can read Dick as someone who likes to be in a relationship, to be intimate with someone – but who's not into casual sex.
When it comes to Tom Taylor's run, I pretty much agree with you. I don't hate it, as some people seem to do, but I think the art has been the best part. It's mostly been pretty meh, TT has at several times spoken about how Nightwing is an A-lister among DC superheroes, but I don't think he shows it. And here and there he produces some really nice panels/pages (sometimes it's up to debate whether the characters are out of character or not). We're heading towards the end of his and Bruno Redondon's run and they've hinted he's going to stop being Nightwing. As if we need a third period of Dick not being Nightwing in three years… 🙄 The best writer of Nightwing vol 4 was Sam Humphries, in my opinion. Unfortunately, it was very short.
Ok, this post has definitely gone on long enough... but if you want to go deeper into the rabbit hole, here are some earlier posts.

It seems like you have a negative opinion on all non-Winick characterizations of Jason in the comics. But do you hate them all equally? Could you rank all non-Winick comic depictions of Jason from best to worst characterization? Or maybe give them a letter grade?
Hi friend! This is a bit funny to me because I really didn’t expect people to be so vocal about me being such an annoying person when it comes to Jason’s characterizations. I can’t promise that I won’t complain anymore but I will try to be kinder.
But I won’t start right now, because I really want to make this ranking, it will go from best to absolute worst! I bet you guys won’t know who is in the deepest circle in hell! Place your bets everyone!
This is the level that gives me joy! (Yup, I put a writer that only wrote ten pages of Jason content as the best, please don’t call me out on it).
Matthew Rosenberg: I love him and I love what he has done with Jason, I have only read ten pages of his work while writing Jason and he already has me hooked. Like I said in that one ask/post, I think he will make some amazing things with the Jason that we have now and I still believe that. Little shit and competent Jason Todd, I am glad you are here.
Peter Tomasi: This one is a little checky because his run is out of comics canon, but his Arkham Knight Jason Todd and the way he wrote his origin are absolutely stunning.
Marv Wolfman: His Robin Jason was really good and I am really glad that we had those comics in which we could see Jason in an environment that didn’t include Batman. I was like looking at what Jason could have been if he had stayed with the Titans’ instead of keep on being Robin in Gotham with Batman.
This is the level in which I can still like some things about the story even though in general I didn’t enjoy the book.
Joshua Williamson: Yeah, but he is only here because his story seemed interesting, my issue as I have said before is his subplot “romance” and the fact that he seems to be the kind of writer that wants to push the “Batfamily” dynamic. Otherwise, his Jason characterization when it came to him not liking working for the Magistrate was really good, sadly it was overshadowed by all the bad that I just really didn’t enjoy at all
Chip Zdarsky: Tyler (Blue Hood) and Jason working to rid Gotham of a drug really brought me back to the good old days. I also really liked seeing the parallels between Jason and his mom with Tyler and his own mother, it felt like a good way to start a connection and develop a Red Hood story. Sadly, the book as a whole was shit and it ended horribly but there were some interesting moments.
Now we are looking at the level where I just wonder: Why?
Paul Dini: Why? His Jason really did a 360, and I meant it, I really don’t know what the point of Jason taking the mantle of another dead Jason was. His Red Robin was just a Red Hood in a different suit and that was that. I understand that they wanted to kill him because he was an anomaly and all that but, he just really felt out of place in that event. This was the first warning: Jason Todd/Red Hood only works on a street-level, stop trying to make everyone dimension jump and all that DC.
Bruce Jones: Hey! I forgot about this guy in the last post! He sucks! And his arc in Nightwing is the epitome of the question: Why? I get it, DiDio wanted to kill Dick and then have Jason take over as Nightwing but Dick didn’t die at the end of Infinite Crisis, he was still alive there was no reason to have Jason dress up as Nightwing and going on a killing spree, also, the tentacles? Really? Annoying and weird.
Scott Snyder and Tim Seeley: I ask why but I know why. This was a desperate attempt to use Jason in stories because they couldn’t use Dick Grayson. It was also weird because being there only pushed him more towards the Bat-Clan even though he had his Outlaws team going on. It was just weird and they were also big on unnecessary “romances”.
This is the Skrull Jason level. Here I see, hear and feel no Jason Todd.
Grant Morrison: Grant needed a villain and all they could come up with was this weird as red-haired-pill-headed-Red Hood and DC said “sure, why not?”. There is no real way to find UtRH Jason in this version of Jason and that for me is a little bit better than still seeing the Jason that I loved in whatever this was.
Tony S. Daniel: This one sucks the most because it isn’t that Jason is unrecognizable its just that Jason is the exact opposite of who he would have become. Everything about this Jason seems to come from the Upside Down. Him saying that Gotham needs Batman so he will be Batman and he needs a Robin was the wildest take that I have seen about Jason. I have no other words for it.
Hell.
James Tynion IV: whoever invited this man to this party needs to understand that they made a big mistake. All Tynion did was overpower the living hell out of Jason for a fight that wasn’t big enough to become a Batman/Red Hood event. The fight was so lame and so stupid, if Jason had learned the ancient martial arts move in the All-Castle and the used that and the All-Blades to defeat Ra’s it would have been more than enough, but in New 52 writers really wanted to make Jason look like the most experienced and best at being a hero when Kory and Roy were standing next to him.
Scott Lobdell: He sucks, New 52 was just terrible, there was nothing that I liked from it, character assassination for everyone, nobody was treated well there. He wrote a self-insert version of Jason and it was noticeable because Jason was trash in New 52. Rebirth was better but that didn’t make things better for Jason because Lobdell started to fuel the “Jason was guilty for his own death” and “Jason was a reckless Robin” narratives and here we are today. Lobdell danced around his own stories, his characterization of Jason and he never gave a fulfilling ending to any of his arcs. Some characters we only saw once some others simply disappeared. Nothing ever truly started or ended when it came to his writing.
Ginnungagap.
Geoff Johns: to him all I will say is: comprate un bosque y perdete.
Thank you for the ask! I had fun doing this! I wish you have an excellent day!

i’m an idiot. i screw everything up.
Titans 3.03
still here, still doing this. these reviews take a fair bit of time that i cobble together across days (like, ten minute chunks during breaks, etc) and i tend to struggle to keep up with episodes as they come out. this means that by the time i’m done with one, most of my stuff is jossed (or geoffed in this case? idk) or outdated and the post sinks like a stone into oblivion. so! i’m going to change things up a bit with this one and write as i see the episode rather than collecting my thoughts later. in my experience with spn, that was a faster way to get them done.
anyway. let’s see how it goes! *shadowboxes*
SPOILERS ahead.
1. an auspicious start with some grave-digging!
digging up a grave and breaking open a coffin is some serious, back-breaking work--that dick did it on his own, likely straight after that fight with red hood, is a testament to the sheer intensity, stamina and discipline that he’s capable of. like, we like to joke about dick cooking cauliflower crust pizzas and making gar and rachel spar and memorise sun tzu--and despair at the obvious consequences of some of bruce’s parenting skills--but imagine crime-fighting almost daily without any superpowers, performing some of the most intense parkour in bulky, uncomfortable armour, doing detective work, pushing through every last barrier of exhaustion and then getting up to repeat it all over again the next day. dick probably thought he was going extra-easy on rachel and gar.
1.5. then again, dick probably had a hundred different easier ways to confirm whether jason was still buried or not, from using equipment to merely asking connor to have a quick look with his x-ray vision. but, no, he’s too caught up in confusion and terror, not really having come to terms with jason’s death in the first place, leave alone the possibility that he could be alive after all. he can’t possibly let the others know until he’s confirmed it himself, even if it means digging all through the night until his arms are jelly, thinking over and over again about jason’s eyes, jason’s voice, from behind that red mask.
... besides, dick has good reason to believe that he could’ve been hallucinating. wouldn’t be his first psychotic episode, after all.
that just imbues this sweaty, desperate, fingers-scrabbling-in-gravedirt scene with that much more poignancy, and a fair bit of bone-chilling terror. dick is horrified to realise that jason’s grave is empty, but a part of him is also probably relieved.
Tumblr media
1.75 (... also it’s curious that we’re never shown any of the team asking to see jason’s grave after they come to wayne manor. i guess it’s because the writers--and the audience--know that jason is actually alive, but these people don’t know that. i don’t know if it’s sad or infuriating or both that they’re barely shown mourning him.)
2. oh GOD the sheer TENSION in kory saying, “i don’t want to say it, but--” and dick quickly interrupting, “it was jason. i saw him,” and hank giving him this loaded sidelong glance. i love how dick’s precarious mental health from last season is still this big elephant in the room but at least nobody’s blowing up in his face and questioning his every decision yet
2.25. i love the relative matter-of-factness with which they’re discussing a possible resurrection. and, of course, ra’s al ghul is brought up and quickly dismissed
(still wouldn’t put it past this show to bring him up at the very last second as the real real mastermind)
2.5. “maybe they can bring donna back” OH KORY
2.75. didn’t they have this same conversation about killing/not killing rose last season? man, the og titans make me tired.
and i don’t know if it’s just hank, but there’s a definite in-group/out-group vibe going on with the og titans, where they’re not only ready to consider killing anybody who threatens the group but makes it difficult for new people to fit in. donna and kory got along well with each other, but the dynamics between hank/donna/dawn and gar/rachel/rose were somewhat strained, and with jason, they were really fucking terrible. it makes sense when you think about how the titans started and how they broke up the first time--both were fairly disruptive events, i’d imagine, in that they probably got together to break away from their mentors and strike out on their own, and when they split up, it was the first time they felt directly responsible for the loss of an innocent life.
but the titans that dick is leading now is explicitly about mentoring a young generation of heroes, about second chances and found family. dick definitely wants to reach out to him first, and i have a feeling he’s going to be forced to make some sort of terrible Choice later on in this episode.
2.8. (honestly tho, this also seems like hank struggling with his own guilt re: jason; if red hood is not the kid that he failed, it’d be easier to fight him.)
3.
Tumblr media
HANK NO
4. honestly this season is already ticking off so many things on my wishlist, but i really wish dick would sit down with the newer members of his team and trust them with important information the same time that he’s telling them to the other members. gar searching for help and reassurance from a man who just dumped all of his responsibilities on his son overnight and went AWOL is a sad sight
4.25. has it only been just 48 hours????? wow! jason’s definitely been planning the red hood gig for a long time now...
5. ezekiel, my man! shady looking guy gets into your cab without a destination in mind... no problem, get right in! said guy gets a call to go to the observatory when he’s barely even looked out of the window so far at gotham... yep, a damn tourist! i want more ezekiel in this show.
5.25. (of course jason has upturned table lamps all along the floor... we have to *gritted teeth* balance the TEAL with the ORANGE don’t we?)
Tumblr media
5.5. “dick’s a fucking psycho--he could be following you right now.” hank... has no objection to that lol
5.25. hank, hank... this is bad-decision-palooza. i can’t imagine that hank actually thought that jason was reaching out to him for help, given that the last time hank and jason had any substantial interaction hank had been one of the people accusing jason of sabotaging the team. but for him to go seek out jason and go along with his demands without any backup, weapons or equipment? not the best idea he’s ever come up with.
(add to that getting into the swimming pool of a condemned gym... oh yuck.)
((yes, i have enough self-restraint to not cap his ass.))
(((cap his ass! HA!)))
5.5. do you think jason has bugs/monitoring equipment planted in wayne manor to monitor the titans, or remote access to the cave’s systems? wouldn’t put it past him.
6. oh man, hank came back before dick and the others could meet ezekiel! this is TRAGIC
6.25. i mean, it’s plot-convenient that connor was able to give so much information about the bomb from just looking at it once, but i also like to think it’s the luthor-side of him coming to the fore. it also reminds me of that (in)famous scene from the new52 run of Nightwing comics, where a bomb was attached to nightwing’s heart and luthor disabled it by killing nightwing (temporarily). it’s a neat little callback.
6.55. “where i come from, you go after family? there’s no mercy.” BUT THAT’S THE PROBLEM ISN’T IT
6.75. i mean, dick’s making sense: this is a game, and they need to get it off playing out on jason’s terms. but having a member of his team in his face, doubting his reasoning and every decision? a very familiar sight.
6.8. krypto with an a+ sense of humour? also a very familiar sight.
7. wayne enterprises... providing the military with... bombs that can be implanted in humans? a BIIIIG yikes. i guess it’s not too many steps above developing clandestine intra-dermal trackers and implanting them in your own sons, and bruce probably thought they could be used as part of negotiation tactics, but still... YIKES.
7.5. on the other hand, conner being asked to build a deactivation advice seems part of a growth arc that started from last season... he knows so much, but part of growing is learning, and part of learning is using what you know to create something new.
8. oh man, my heart broke at hank going “i’m an idiot... i screw everything up.” like. for him to go like this, after being brought down to such a low last season? struggling with pain and addiction and his relationship with the love of his life? it’s so sad.
Tumblr media
9. oh, oh, oh! ronnie from schitt’s creek! i love her!
9.5. “one of jason’s minions” took his body out of the morgue... how deliciously morbid that he planned out his own death like this!
10. TALK TO HANK, DICK
honestly, tho, i’m quite impressed with dick here. trying to think beyond just the most alarming part of the crisis at hand, keeping his cool, delegating tasks, frequently touching base with different members of his team... well done.
10.25.... whoops, spoke too soon. i’m genuinely confused here, tho. where did the van full of gold bars come from? why did they stop there and get out? how did dawn even know about this?
on the other hand, it’s cool to know dove has bulletproof feathers!
10.5. eh... curran walters isn’t really selling red hood’s menace to me so far. but then again, if titans version of red hood is vulnerable-kid-with-father-issues-trying-to-overcompensate, then yeah! yeah, it makes sense.
11. “when bats have sex, they gotta have something to hang from” OH GOD HANK
Tumblr media
... because i want smiley!gar on my blog :)
11.5. awww. i feel sorry for hank but NONE of these fuckers deserve gar except maybe kory
12. ohhh FUCK! look at jason being exactly one step ahead of the titans at every turn. nice.
no really, i love the building stakes and the building mystery - i feel like the deathstroke arc from last season should’ve been more like this. the flashbacks about jericho and rose came too late and after too much build up, which resulted in a very underwhelming and confusing season throughline.
13. HANK AND DIIIIIICCCKKK
“you’re doing your best by me. always have.” WAILING HERE
it also kills me to think that hank thinks that his imminent death is because of his failure to keep the team together (when he was clearly struggling with his own issues and was spiralling towards rock-bottom) and his fear that he will once again be the cause of the team falling apart.
also:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
14. “i grew up... you can, too. you just have to face your fear.”
yep, got scarecrow’s grubby little fingerprints aaaaalllll over this.
14.25. nightwing’s got specialised batarangs! yay! (somehow i can’t see this universe’s dick calling them “wingdings”)
15. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
oh man, that was devastating. well done, show. fuck, well done, jason.
this is going to bring up all sorts of “if onlys” for the team. i can’t wait for some fucking aftermath.

i want to get into dc comics, especially the batfam. recommendations on where to start?
I can give you recommendations, but they’re gonna depend a lot on what you like to read. They’re also mostly based on what I’ve read, which means not a lot post-new 52.
Batman #408 -  This is an issue, rather than a run, but it’s basically the start of modern Batman. Come here for a mix of dark noir and wacky shenanigans. I’m not kidding - the early 400s of Batman range from “someone stole all of the church bells in Gotham” to “the Russians are trying to assassinate President Reagan”. I recommend starting with 408 specifically because it’s just post-Crisis and is the issue that introduces Jason Todd. Tim Drake, who’s Robin for most of the modern age, is introduced in #440, but I really do think his introduction reads better with the context.
Nightwing (1996) - if you like mysteries or cop shows, this is a good place to start. A lot of people really don’t like this run, but I loved it. It is one of those comics that feels very... seamed. You can really tell where events messed with the writer’s pacing, and there are times where I felt like the writer clearly wanted to do something that the editors wouldn’t let her, but overall it was very good and enjoyable. I think it works as a place to start because while it takes place after the batfamily is formed, it’s mostly about Nightwing establishing himself in his own territory and what he does after he establishes himself. There’s a decent amount of crossover with other books, but there’s a lot of plot on its own, as well. Let Devin Grayson go feral.
Batgirl (2000) - If you’d like something that’s similarly emotionally heavy but less gorey than Batman or Nightwing, or if you hate reading dialogue, read Batgirl. If you like seeing disabled kids get mostly-supportive parenting, read Batgirl. If you like martial arts, read Batgirl. Everyone should read Batgirl you guys. It’s so good. I highly recommend this one for beginners, because it rarely ties into what’s going on in other series - for the most part, Batgirl does its’ own thing. It also follows a character who, prior to the run, had only very recently been adopted into the family, so there’s not a lot of prior knowledge needed to go into it, though I do think Bruce’s actions have a bit more depth to them if you read it after Death In the Family (Batman 426-429).
Teen Titans (1980) - This ones like, a half a recommendation. A lot of people really like this run (I think mostly because of nostalgia), and there’s a lot that happens in the Teen Titans that’s fairly important, and is a good way to discover new characters. This run is generally good Silver Age-esque fun, where things are high stakes but you know everything will turn out alright, and all the characters are super great and lovable. It’s also aged extremely poorly. While Nightwing and Batman both feature sexual assault, it’s usually addressed as a traumatic experience, or at least attempted to. Teen Titans does not. At all. Teen Titans features such questionable decisions as, oh, Terry Long’s entire existence. So, GIANT warning symbols on this one, somewhat smaller ones on the others.
another recommendation courtesy of @rainbowfoxes is to read Crisis on Infinite Earths, and then pick some characters you liked there and follow their runs afterward. I haven’t tried this, so I have no idea where it will get you!
Anyway, everyone should go read Batgirl (2000).

Batfamily Face-claims
Days ago I made a post with my fan cast for the Batfamily. But there’s a difference between that first one and this one. You see, as an artist and as a writer I like to have visual references. And these face-claims are exactly that, visual references of how I imagine these characters when I draw them, when I write and read about them. I know this “cast” won’t be portraying the roles in any media, and I chose them solely based on their looks, on how I physically imagine them in real life.
Bruce Wayne - Batman
I like Ben Affleck not just as a visual reference. I like him in general because it’s really easy to see him as Batman and as Bruce Wayne. In my humble opinion, Ben not just looks like Bruce, he acts, moves, fights and carries himself as Bruce (and Batman).
Tumblr media
Dick Grayson - Nightwing
Dick is one of my favorite characters in the batfamily. It wasn’t as easy as I thought to find a face claim for him. At the end I couldn’t pick just one, so I have this one...
Tumblr media
And also this one...
Tumblr media
You can’t blame me for not choosing, okay?
Jason Todd - Red Hood
Jason Peter Todd. Boy, what a challenge you were. Though I’m very happy with the idea of seeing Matthew Daddario portraying him, I already said he wasn’t my first choice. I needed to do deeper research to finally choose him, because my first choice was this guy...
Tumblr media
Of course, he’s not an actor, so I couldn’t exactly put him in a (more or less) serious fancast. He has that bad boy vibe and well, he looks a lot like Jason.
Tim Drake - Red Robin
My sweet, incredibly smart, amazing boy. He is a constant choice and it is because I can’t really picture anyone else as Tim Drake but Ryan Potter.
Tumblr media
Damian Wayne - Robin
Yeah, some of you may have seen this one coming. Another constant choice, simply because I absolutely love this guy and certainly that’s the face I imagine when I read about Damian Wayne Al Ghul.
Tumblr media
Duke Thomas - Signal
So underrated, so often ignored. Duke is an important part of this family and I truly like him.
Tumblr media
Luke Fox - Batwing
The potential of this character is beautiful, really. He’s a veteran so I envision him as a big guy. A stern, big guy.
Tumblr media
Helena Wayne - Huntress
The mantle of Huntress has been taken up from several women within DC Comics. The first Huntress was a villain called Paula Brooks. When she was revived in the 70’s she was made a hero and the daughter of Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle. She grows up to study laws at Harvard and is an expert in martial arts. She didn’t want to become a vigilante, that until her mother is killed and she decides to hunt down the killer. Later on, in Post-Crisis, we are introduced to Helena Bertinelli, an unrelated character to the prior Huntress. And I explain this to avoid any confussion. I think this character deserved to be explored further.
Tumblr media
She’s all Selina except for those blue eyes and that stubborn jawline that she got from her father.
Tumblr media
If you’re interested in the cast’s names, feel free to ask.

DC’s Cinematic Universe
Tumblr media
Time.com published an article detailing the upcoming movies in the DC Cinematic Universe. The movies are in various stages of development. Some may never make it to the theaters.
Here we go:
Shazam! – Looks both cute and fun. A good approach as Billy should never be “dark” or “grim”. Kingdom Come is the sole exception to this rule.
Joker (Joaquin Phoenix) – Absolutely no interest.
Birds of Prey – I could do without the inclusion of Harley Quinn but I guess it’s the price I pay to see Helena, Dinah, and Renee on screen.
Cyborg – Depends on the story. I enjoyed Cyborg in the Justice League but he’s such a “Titan” to me that it will be odd to see him on the big screen without his teammates.
Wonder Woman 1984 – Yes! Cheetah on the big screen!
Green Lantern Corps – Description makes it sound like a Hal & John buddy movie. Which is fine but I want plenty of the alien Green Lanterns too – Kilowog, Salakk, Katma Tui, etc. Also, Guy and Kyle in the sequel.
The Flash – Flash was adorable in the Justice League movie. Not very Barry like but adorable. Could be good. I’m hoping the writers skip the “Flashpoint” story and instead focus on Barry’s rogues. The Flash, along with Batman and Spider-Man, has one of the best rogues’ gallery in comics. Use them!
Suicide Squad 2 – I enjoyed the first Suicide Squad movie. It was flawed, the ending dragged on, and wasn’t the Squad I envisioned but it was enjoyable. The Time article mentioned a possible re-boot but with James Gunn possibly coming on board, I would guess the tone would be the same as the first.  Personally, I would like a cast and tone similar to the classic Ostrander run.
The Batman – Seems to be in a constant state of upheaval. I would love for a killer Two-Face story.
New Gods – Could be great if done well. I want lots of Bekka, Barda, and the Female Furies. Granny Goodness too. Perhaps the movie could focus on Barda and Scott’s escape from Apocalypse?
Justice League Dark – I would hope the movie would keep the creepy tone of the initial Enchantress storyline. Marvel had the first magic movie with Doctor Strange but that was cosmic, high level sorcery. Let DC do the creepy, scary, comes with a price magic.
Batgirl – I wouldn’t mind a Batgirl: Year One adaptation. Please keep Babs in her original, pre-Dick romance state: an independent woman who was inspired by Batman to become a hero. Not a de-aged sidekick of Batman. Babs is a Batgirl, not a Robin!
Gotham City Sirens – Pamela and Selina! Yes!
Joker (Jared Leto) – Again, zero interest.
Harley Quinn & The Joker – Hard Pass. We either get two hours of Joker abusing Harley or the Joker “behaves” himself and it becomes “see, he really loves her”. Either way, no thank you.
Blackhawk – I may be one of the few but I’m excited for this project. A World War II comic book movie with no costumed heroes? Sign me up. Zinda Blake is a must for this movie.
Supergirl – The DCU hasn’t managed to portray Superman well. I don’t have high hopes for Supergirl.
Nightwing – Hopefully, the split from Batman isn’t the focus of the movie. I’d cover Dick’s move to Bludhaven. Blockbuster would be the obvious choice for the villain. Or possibly the Court of Owls.
Black Adam – I love Black Adam, particularly his portrayal in the post-Crisis but pre-New 52 DC Universe. I love the Rock but I’m not sure he has the acting chops required for the role. Unless the writers use the same tone for Black Adam that was used in the Shazam movie.
Deathstroke – I’m cautiously optimistic. I want the twisted Wilson family dynamics to be a prominent part of the movie.
Lobo – Could be fun if they embrace the over the top personailty of the comic book portrayal.
Blue Beetle – Jaime would add another teen hero to the DCEU. Ted Kord as Jaime’s mentor, please!
Plastic Man – Same as Lobo. Embrace the outrageous antics of the character and have some fun!

Just a thought, I always have problems in seeing Dick Grayson’s skill set when he is with the BatFam. I was rereading some of the old Titan and TT books, as well as his solo series and I tend to see that there writers have a better grasp at his skill set. AKA, they treat him as in according to his skill level. He’s not the best at everything, but he is an ace at everything, typical Robin rules apply. I actually see it as well in TTA. Though, I’m beginning to learn why he’s so inconsistent in
-the batbooks. In TT we have the skill set cut out. Leader, tactician, martial arts, acrobatics, close combat, intuition, intelligence, detective know-how, basically Batman Jr. He’s not the best at everything but is an ace at everything, and can substitute for members of the team. 5-Man Band leader rules apply. Nowadays I think they are “the Robin Rules” in which all Robins apply to this, in which all Robins are expected to be this, adjust skills to character accordingly.
—Now all Robins are suspected to follow that rule. Except Jason, oddly enough. Though the current RHaTO is supposed to be a subversion of the Trinity anyways. In solos skill is balanced with things that make the character stand alone, things that make them unique. Acrobatics, detective stuff, tactics. Balancing those skills without a team and implementing more character in them is where I think the solos are best at. As well as, how big of a threat the Big Bad is. —
—Back in the Robin days balancing skills was fairly simpler. He’s a junior partner and therefore at an apprentice level. Never really surpassing the master, though still an ace. He’s in a Duo and therefore the Ying to Bruce’s Yang. But what happens when the apprentice grows up? Does he surpass the master? This wasn’t answered clearly, well ever clearly because when Dick became Nightwing he was off with the Teen Titans. Where he played the “Leader” role. Then he came back because, editorial—
—and we have Tim, and Babs, and Cass, and Bruce. And I feel like BTAS Nightwing is the definitive Nightwing of this era when collabing w/BatFam. Good, but mostly there for plot advancements so skill isn’t really impt. He’s a supporting character. Then late post-Crisis happened and Dick became Batman again almost for realzes this time and had to be as great as Bruce but in his own way (solo skills apply). He also had to be mentor as well. Then we get to the modern era where we have the Robins—
—and Batman. By the Robins we get the guy Robins: Dick, Jay, Tim, Dami. Then Batman himself. This would be ideal 5-man band material itself with Bruce=leader, Dick=Heart, Tim=Smart Guy, Jay=Lancer, and Dami=Big Guy. Now Dick plays another spot in the band. And this is where the conflict kicks in. Dick’s the leader of the TT. The lancer in the Dynamic Duo. And the Heart in the Robin’s 5-Man band. If we include Steph and -Bruce the roles switch but Batbooks tend to focus on this dynamic.—
—Hearts tend to get the skill set that is missing in the team to fill in that role. This is a subversion to Dick since he was the first Robin. But also due to this some of Dick’s skills are downplayed or not even shown at all because it fits another member of the band. Till his main unique skills are the ones that are cherry picked and that is what he has to offer to the band. Since he’s an ace then he easily fill the roles that are missed in the band. Since he has no powers—
—and with band applications in mind Dick’s skill set tends to dumb down. Not all hearts are weak fighters (Starfire) but I feel that the Robin’s 5 band is the one that is most integrated in the 5 man band alignment and stereotypes. Dick’s role as a supporting character and as a Heart affect his abilities. He can no longer be as good a hacker, he can’t be the main lance to Bruce and looses the Daddy-issues vibe, he HAS to be emotionally supportive and offer a quirky big bro vibe—
—there for supporting reasons. He’s a supporting character. He’s still second in line for leadership but his position in the band is what makes his skills sooo inconsistent. What do you think? Sorry 😐 for the long ask… just thought that you’ll find this interesting. Here’s a potato 🥔
Wow. Okay, so this came into my inbox out of order, so I apologize if this isn’t the order that you meant it to be in. I tried my best to piece it together.
So, I’ve been questioning characterization of the batfam (or at least my characterization of them) for the past week or so? So I’m not sure if I’m the best to give my thoughts on this issue, and to be honest, I’m not quite sure exactly what you’re trying to say, so I’m going to give my piece, and if it doesn’t match up to what you were trying to say, then feel free to ignore this.
I think it just might depend on where you look for characterization and skill? I mean, in Young Justice, Dick is a really skilled hacker, but in the comics, he’s fairly average. Tim and Barbara (and Bruce, I think, but don’t quote me on that) both have hacking skills that outweigh his, but that doesn’t mean he’s necessarily bad at it?
The thing that stays consistent about Dick’s skillset is his acrobatics and his characterization is usually very light-hearted, and yes that makes him kind of goofy and he’s not the complete best at everything, but he does know how to get by. Adapt. I think that if Dick can be Batman (and he’s good at it, even if his heart can’t quite take the wear and tear of what Batman means, and Gotham prospers better under Bruce’s Batman), it means he’s flexible. He can adapt to whatever situation and role he needs to play, and he moves forward because of it. Of course, I’d love for Dick to be be able to show all of the skills he’s learned in his fifteen to twenty years of being Robin and Nightwing and Batman, but sometimes it doesn’t turn out like that.
But I don’t think that Dick’s changing skill set makes him a supporting character (I think that’s what you were saying?). Yeah, he can be a goofball sometimes, and he’s definitely the heart of the family, and sure, he’s not the best hacker, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t ground the others. He’s important, to the superhero community and to the batfamily, and without Dick, there would be a lot of things that would be different. Clark once called Dick the multi-verse constant:
Tumblr media
Dick is important, and even though his skill set changes with the writer or the adaption, it doesn’t mean that there isn’t the same person lying underneath. At least, not in my opinion.
Dick is the heart, you said, and I definitely agree, but I don’t think that’s so bad. He grounds people, he can keep Batman in line, and he’s a good person that just wants to do right in the world. Hell, Bruce saved a whole world because of Dick:
Tumblr media
I don’t know if this made any sense, but thanks for asking.

afdsf You have come to the right place. I read so much ao3, anon.

Dick Grayson Fanfic Recs
General notes: This is a mix of fics I associate with Dick, so some are straightforwardly "this is Dick's POV and a story about him" (like a soft place to land) whereas some are more loosely "this is the POV of one of his siblings who's just thinking about Dick a lot." Post-Crisis is my favorite continuity/tone, so everything is post-Crisis unless otherwise noted, but I happily read nu52/Rebirth or WFA-style fics when I like the authors, so there are some of those in here too.
I just skimmed through my bookmarks and picked out some fics I have fond memories of, so I tried to add content warnings when I remembered, but caveat lector - check the warnings in each individual fic before you read! (Mostly: be advised that there are both Good Dad Bruce and Bad Dad Bruce stories.)
Things I like include plotty long fics, timeline shenanigans like de-aging (and broadly, anything that emphasizes change over time), angst and hurt/comfort, characters with flaws and interpersonal tensions and misunderstandings (and reconciliations <3), explorations of trauma and grief, and Dick and Tim's relationship. So, uh, this rec list is going to be pretty shaped by those preferences.
Okay! Let's do this.
Organization:
Plotty ensemble fics with Dick in a lead role
Dick & Tim fics
Dick & Bruce fics
Dick & Jason fics
Dick & Damian fics
Fics that didn't fit into the other categories
Plotty ensemble fics with Dick in a lead role:
Exactly How This Grace Thing Works by irnan: Dick gets de-aged. You'd think this would be a routine thing. This fic is so great, you guys.
How Far Love Goes by flybynightwing: This one isn't just about Dick - it's an ensemble fic with great plotting and great writing for everyone, especially Steph - but at its heart is a very careful consideration of Dick and Bruce's relationship in all its complexities, from the bonkers highs of Golden and Silver Age comics to the darkest parts of post-Crisis and new 52. (cw: parental abuse, read the content warnings carefully)
from the till-then to the ever-since by kieron_oduibhir: This isn't precisely Dick-centric so much as it's mostly Dick-POV, but it's really good! Everybody meets their younger selves, and I especially enjoy the contrasts between Robin!Dick and Nightwing!Dick.
'no' and other four-letter words by a_good_soldier: Dick reassessing everything with Catalina, much later. (cw mentions of rape)
the man with guns for eyes by 8sword: Dick comes back from the dead. New 52 continuity, post-Spyral. Angst.
bad signal by prismatic-et-al: Not Dick's POV, but it's a great ensemble fic with Dick at the center. Hard to say more without spoiling the plot.
Dick and Tim fics:
a soft place to land by bitimdrake: Tim gives Dick a gift on the One Year Later cruise. Possibly my favorite Dick and Tim fic in the history of time ever. Perfect character voices, perfect story, perfect everything. <333 I reread it regularly.
long distance by bitimdrake: AU where Bruce is really dead and Dick finally gets a phone call from Tim. It's so sad and lives in my mind rent-free. (I also really love pain/release, which is hurt/comfort for Tim.)
Holding the Line by birdchild: Dick having anxiety dreams and getting comforted by Tim. ;_; Very canon-conscious with lots of thoughtfully-integrated references. Part of a really wonderfully-written Tim-and-Damian-centric series, and you probably have to read the series in order to understand this one-shot - and if you like those characters at all, you should!
When It Rains by vellaphoria: After Cass and Tim return from Paris, something seems… wrong. Dick investigates and ends up facing memories of his own. Really nice balance of dealing with ignored-by-canon traumas but the characters still sound like themselves (cw mentions of rape)
We've Taken Different Paths, Traveled Different Roads by sohotthateveryonedied: A moment of reconciliation post-Blackest Night ;_;
The Center Cannot Hold by kieron_oduibhir: Dick having a bad day and getting comforted by Tim and Bruce. New 52/Rebirth continuity.
the oracle at delphi by kieron_oduibhir: Future fic. The POV characters observe Dick and Tim. Hard to say more without spoilers. Trust me, it's very clever!!
Choco Bombs by lurkinglurkerwholurks: Tim POV, but the focus is on a moment of Tim comforting Dick in the Red Robin era. Mostly WFA-style but with post-Crisis influence. (The same author also has some excellent longer ensemble fics where Dick plays a minor role but is consistently well-written when he shows up.)
wake me up before you go go by incogneat_oh: short one-shot: Tim sneaks into Dick's apartment, Robin-era. General note - I only picked out two one-shots, but this author has done a bunch of WFA-style fics which are universally charming and lots of fun.
there'll always be a few things, maybe several things by incogneat_oh: short one-shot: Dick seeks out Tim after a nightmare, Red Robin-era. ;_; Low-key angst.
Road to Damascus by irrelevant: dark AU where Batman kills Zucco and Dick's parents don't die. Fascinating world-building and great character voices. (cw: explicit sex scene between Dick and an OC early in the fic - it's not important and you can skip it but just generally think of this fic as an r-rated movie)
There in the sudden blackness by camsthiSky: Dick and Tim tension in the Batman: Reborn era. Dick and Tim POVs.
things that don't kill us by polsvoice: This one's really Tim-centric but it's all about Tim missing Dick ;_;. After the events of Batman #71, Tim makes a visit to Ric. Nu52/Rebirth era, Tim POV.
and the shapes that you drew may change beneath a different light by popsunner: Tim-centric but I think of it as being about Dick because his absence is the hole that the whole fic's shaped around. ;_; Nu52/Rebirth era, Tim POV, Tim and Damian bonding in the aftermath of Dick's death.
spill of the war by 2012bookworm: "You dosed yourself. With Joker venom." Tim-centric, but Dick is a major character, trying to fix Tim while not-so-secretly crumbling himself. Dick's a barista, but not done in the way you'd expect. Very angsty.
exit wounds by Shari Deschain: very short one-shot in the very early days of Tim-as-Robin
Dick and Bruce fics:
almost right by bitimdrake: Bruce-centric, but it's about his relationship with Dick. (cw mentions of parental abuse)
in the dark of the night by fanfictiongreenirises: Dick & Bruce, through the years. AU where Dick gets adopted last.
deep roots are not reached by the frost by fanfictiongreenirises: in a future where everyone gets along, Dick gets de-aged to several different ages and has to process how the world has changed. I love how different the various incarnations of Dick feel. (cw mentions of rape and parental abuse)
shoulder to shoulder by lurkinglurkerwholurks: Dick and Bruce at Janet Drake's funeral.
the lower and coarser soul by dustorange: absolutely perfect slice-of-life with Dick, Bruce, and Tim (cw mention of Bruce punching Dick)
Dick and Jason fics:
Recollect, re-collect by Ptelea: A spell gone wrong leads to Jason reassessing some things. Jason-centric, but it's mostly about his relationship with Dick. Fantastic writing and plotting. New 52/Rebirth continuity (Spyral, Tim's close to Jason instead of Dick, etc.).
The 70 Days After Groundhog Day by Ptelea: Fascinating concept - Jason experiences a traumatizing Groundhog Day, but the whole fic is from Dick's POV in the aftermath as he pieces together what happened - and wonderful slow-burn writing. New 52/Rebirth continuity. (cw: mentions of rape).
Dick and Damian fics:
the primacy of personal conscience by birdsofthesoul: Brilliant concept (a wishing well that grants wishes - but it might be evil!), whirlwind plot, and a great take on Dick that doesn't lose his edge. Damian is a minor character but an important part of Dick's motivations. Read if only for my favorite take on Talia ever in the last chapter. New 52/Rebirth continuity.
3:16 by partingxshot: With faltering steps, Dick and Damian become Batman and Robin. Lovely writing. Canon notes: closely tracks Morrison's B&R and Leviathan.
Fics that didn't fit into my other categories:
It's a Wonderful Earth-218 by flybynightwing: I asked for an It's a Wonderful Life-style fic starring Dick and then I GOT ONE, proving that miracles are real and flybynightwing performs them. <3
If you just call me by flybynightwing: Dick and Donna, through the years.
continuous tense by batofgoodintent: Fix-it for the Mirage plotline. DickKory.
Let Us Be Brave and i want to wake up (i hate this dream) by camsthiSky: One-shots with Dick-as-Batman, depressed and grieving.
Don't You Forget About Me by sohotthateveryonedied: Everybody forgets Dick. ;_; One-shot.
touch starved by envysparkler: Dick is touch-starved and then gets hugged a lot. WFA-style.
feast by envysparkler: The Batkids are magical creatures that feed on pleasure from cuddle piles. Gen ensemble; ch. 1 is Dick & Jason and ch. 4 is Dick & Tim. WFA-style.
Also, I write stories about Dick & Tim sometimes, so, uh. If you're interested, there's
the WIP where Dick meets Tim for the first and second and third time and finds him really annoying,
the one where they spend Christmas Eve together and inch closer to being brothers,
the one where Tim is a wimp,
the one where Dick catches a falling Tim in RR 12, and
the WIP where Dick's trying to solve a mystery and everybody's mad at each other (this one's gonna be heartwarming eventually I promise!! later).
Snippets: Tim's imprisoned in fantasy!Russia and Dick has to disguise himself as an interrogator to rescue him, outline of an angsty fic of Dick and Tim in a world with soulmarks.
In conclusion
Dick is the best blorbo ever to blorbo. There are more fics in his character tag than for any of the other Batkids and yet there will never be enough <3

HELLO Julia, if I was looking to get into chaboi, Dick Grayson, what media sources would you recommend??
i want you to know, first and foremost, that this ask has energized me like nothing has in 75 long years and that this is going to get long and it’s going to get weird so just like allow it to go there
HOKAY
so first off before things get too wild let me just link you to a couple of good rec lists i’ve come across in my travels, which are a lot more concise and better organized than this post is going to be:
comics
animation
but if you’re looking for a bit more of that Patented Julia Flavor just step right beneath this read more and let me show you the world
here are some of my personal favorites:
so call me biased, but i think a pretty good place to start on your journey to Loving Dick Grayson With Your Whole Heart is with batman: the animated series, because that is where my love affair with dick grayson (and, indeed, with the dc comics universe as a whole) started when i was but a wee bairn. obviously the whole series is fucking killer, but if you don’t have that kind of time or if you’re like three-year-old julia and you exclusively want to watch episodes with robin in them, here is a wiki page that will tell you which episodes those are (scroll down to appearances and references). these are available to stream on amazon prime hbomax, but if you don’t have that you can also find them on kisscartoon, along with all of the other animated stuff i’m about to mention.
*2022 update: most if not all of the animated recs are on hbomax now!
robin’s reckoning: parts 1 & 2 - robin’s origin story!!!!! Very Important, a must-watch, perhaps even a definitive starting point
if you’re so smart, why aren’t you rich? - batman and robin have to navigate a labyrinth designed by the riddler and it’s dope as hell, this was legit my favorite episode as a kid (well after robin’s reckoning bc Come On but seriously it’s so fun)
the demon’s quest: parts 1 & 2 - it has everything: the introduction of Famous Batman Nemesis Ra’s Al Ghul, robin as damsel in distress, shirtless batman, the works
fear of victory - robin’s first appearance on the show and it’s just…. adorable
from there if you wanna keep things animated and move from robin to nightwing, you can hit up the new batman adventures:
old wounds - the nightwing origin story aka why dick stopped being robin  and my guy it is Angsty As Hell
over the edge - not exactly nightwing-centric tbh but HOLY SHIT WATCH IT
animal act - the synopsis is literally “dick grayson revisits his circus roots”
you scratch my back - dick is being real buddy-buddy with selina kyle and bruce and barbara DON’T LIKE IT
here’s the wiki again if you’re craving more
dc has also been releasing a lot of straight-to-dvd animated movies lately and dick features in a few of them but my favorite is batman: bad blood, in which dick has to take up the cowl and team up with damian wayne (robin #5) to find bruce when he goes missing (i’d also recommend batman: under the red hood even though dick’s more of a minor character in that one just because it’s really good)
batgirl/robin year one - EXTREMELY well done origin volumes for these excellent, excellent kids
if you’re looking to read some comics, i’ve got some of those, too! i can send you my comixology login credentials in a private message if you’d like (and if you're a mutual) and here’s what i’d recommend once you’re in there:
batman: gotham knights, #20 & #21 - The Story Of How Bruce Wayne Adopted Dick Grayson As His Actual For Real Son
batman: dark victory - also a Very Good robin origin (what can i say there are a lot of takes on the kid’s origin), technically a sequel to batman: the long halloween, which doesn’t have robin in it but is also Very Good
infinite crisis - the story of how dick is The Best Of All Possible Boys
batman: long shadows - bruce is DEAD (i mean it turns out later that he’s not but) and dick becomes batman
nightwing: year one - exactly what it says on the tin, has some adorable interactions between dick and robin #2, jason todd
batman: the black mirror - often lauded as the best batman story with dick as batman, Very Very Good
and then i also have A Lot of Totally Legally Obtained and Not Pirated At All comics that i could send you, you would just have to install ComicRack to read them:
bruce wayne: murderer & bruce wayne: fugitive - Just A Lot Of Family Drama bc bruce (not batman – BRUCE) gets Accused of Murder and Refuses To Let His Children Help
gates of gotham - a really neat story with a really good art style, dick is batman and he does a good job of leading the team!!! (i’m having a hard time finding this actually but i SWEAR i have it somewhere i’ll find it)
batman year one: scarecrow - i haven’t actually read this yet but i see a lot of good photosets from it and i’ve seen it on rec lists so i assume it’s good
AND THEN i have comics which i’ve read but i don’t own, but i think i’ve already gotten way far ahead of myself since all you asked for was a starting point uh
phew okay
that should be uh
that should be good for now lol
definitely message me if you have questions though!!!!

Hi! I'm really sorry to bother you! But I was wondering if you could give us a list of recommended stories with dick after his Robin days. Like after bruce fired him and he became nightwing? All up to the time he had to become batman? I really love your content by the way ☺️!!!
Gosh, this turned out to be even more tricky than the Robin list, and it's frightfully long!
One reason is that storytelling has changed since Dick was Robin. Back in the Golden and Silver age, with very few exceptions, comics were stand-alone short stories. In later decades, it's usually arcs that span at least a couple of issues. Some themes can run for a very long time. For instance, Dick was brainwashed by Brother Blood in New Teen Titans vol 1  # 22 (in 1982), and that would have consequences until The New Teen Titans vol 2 #31 (1987).
There are also a looot of stories – apart from guest appearances, Nightwing is a regular/lead character in several books named New Teen Titans/Titans and suchlike, 1980-1996 and 1999-2009; Outsiders vol 3 (2003-2007); Nightwing vol 1 (1995) and vol 2 (1996–2007). In team titles, several characters compete for attention. Also, I have read and know the Nightwing books more than his team titles, so they will be more prominent on my list.
There are a bunch of stories where Dick has a pretty small role and won't be in a lot of panels, but those panels can be "important" and often quoted when it comes to Dick. For instance, Bruce Wayne: Murderer/Fugitive, Hush, Under the Hood...
So, you'll have to take this for what it is. A very personal list, with stories I like (and remember), or have some fun panels, or are "important". Because certain stories are essential to the character's history, regardless if you like them or not. (And if you want more of Dick with Kory/Starfire, read the New Teen Titans titles.) If you'd like to see a synopsis before you commit to reading – because did I mention it is a very long list indeed? – the dc.fandom.com wiki page will often provide.
(Or you could do the sensible thing, and see this as more of "the complete history of pre-Batman Nightwing, and ask somebody else for recommendations...)
The Judas contract (when Dick becomes Nightwing). The New Teen Titans # 39-40, Tales of the Teen Titans #41-44, Annual #3. (1984)
Trivial Pursuits. NewTeen Titans vol 2 # 32. (A nice breather, when the Titans try just to relax together. It goes as well as can be expected.) (1987)
Tumblr media
Batman # 416. (First post-Crisis meeting with Jason Todd) (1988)
The Cheshire Contract. Action Comics Weekly # 613-618 (Dick helps Roy find his daughter.) (1988)
The New Titans # 55. (Dick learns about Jason's death when the Titans return to Earth after a long period in space. He goes to Bruce to talk and what follows is the infamous scene when Bruce hits Dick, says he should never have had a partner and tells Dick to leave and leave the keys with Alfred.) (1989)
Tumblr media

The New Titans # 65. (Tim turns up at Dick's place to learn what it is to be Batman's partner.) (1990)
Total Chaos. (In issues of Deathstroke the Terminator, New Titans and Team Titans.) (Mirage, a woman from an alternate future and who has illusion casting powers, takes the form of Starfire and sleeps with Dick, who is shamed by his team members for being unfaithful to Kory, even though this is rape. So, an important fact to know but not something I would recommend to read.) (1992)
Tumblr media
Knightfall Prodigal (Dick's first longer stint as Batman. And he takes care of Tim and the Manor on his own!) In Batman #512-514 and three other titles. (1994-1995)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nightwing Alfred's Return (Kind of fun, when Dick seeks out Alfred, who left Bruce's service because Bruce wasn't taking care of himself, in London.) (1995)
Nightwing vol 1 # 1-4. (I don't love this, but it is a milestone in that it's the first Nightwing solo series, Dick momentarily decides to leave the hero business, and gets his by now classic fingerstripe suit.) #1-4 (1995)
Tumblr media
Like Riding a Bike. (Donna checks up on Dick.) The Batman Chronicles # 7. (1996)

Tumblr media
Matatoa. Batman: Gotham Knights # 16-17. (Bruce adopts Dick.) (2001)
Tumblr media
Who Is Troia? The Titans (1999) # 23-25. (A visit from the Titan's children from the Kingdom Come universe.). (2001)
Retribution. Batman: Gotham Knights # 20-21. (2001)
Nightwing vol 2 # 64. (Nightwing as Santa's elf.) (2001)
Tumblr media
Bruce Wayne: Murderer and Bruce Wayne: Fugitive (in several titles). (Dick refuses to believe that Bruce can be a murderer and it causes friction with for instance Tim. Also, a big fight between Dick and Bruce when the latter says he is going to abandon his Bruce identity.) (2002)
Nightwing vol 2 # 75. (Flashback's to Dick's early years with Bruce. Plus the first appearance of Tarantula (Catalina Flores; a controversial figure in Dick's history, she straddled the line between vigilante and villain.)) (2002)
Hush. Batman # 608–619. (# 615 for Dick, but it might be confusing only to read one issue.) (2002-2003)
Tumblr media
The Obsidian Age. JLA vol 1 # 68-75. (The Justice League members disappear, Dick leads a new team for a few issues. In # 73, Bruce is quoted:" The only time I ever feel pride is when I look at Nightwing. Sometimes I think he's the only thing I ever did right."). (2002-2003)
Tumblr media
Titans/Young Justice: Graduation Day # 1-3 (Donna is killed. Dick is devastated and declares that the Titans are finished.) (2003)
Tumblr media
Nightwing vol 2 # 80-83. (Deathstroke is in Blüdhaven to kill someone close to Dick. Bruce asks when he will quit the force, Dick wants to stay as a cop, but when he saves Amy Rohrbach, she recognizes that Dick is Nightwing and fires him.) (2003)
Nightwing vol 2 # 86. (Dick, forced to rest after being injured, solves crimes on America's Most Wanted and drives Barbara up the wall.) (2003)
The Outsiders vol 3 # 1 (Roy talks Dick, who dissolved the Titans after Donna's death, into leading a new team, promising they will not be a family.) (2003)
Nightwing vol 2 # 87-100. (Definitely one of the darkest periods points in Dick's life pre-Flashpoint. Tarantula breaks up him and Barbara. Blockbuster destroys his circus, his home and kills people just for talking to Dick. Tarantula kills Blockbuster and Nightwing is too exhausted to prevent it, and afterwards, she rapes him (# 93). Not necessarily an arc I would recommend to read, but fans discuss it a lot.) (2003-2004)
The Outsiders vol 3 # 11 (Roy is angsting about going back to the hero business after narrowly surviving being shot, sparring and heart-to-heart with Dick follows.) (2004)
Under the Hood. Batman # 635-641, 645-650, Annual # 25. (2004-2006)
Nightwing Year One. Nightwing vol 2 # 101-106. (I honestly don't care much for this story, but it's good to know that it's one of several retellings of how Dick became Nightwing.) (2005)
Supergirl (2005) # 3 (Supergirl has a huuuge crush on Nightwing... ) (2005)
Silent partner. The Outsiders vol 3 # 21-23. (Dick goes ballistic when he realizes Batman has been funding the Outsiders, Roy admits Batman has been feeding him information. Only it wasn't Batman – it was Deathstroke in disguise.) (2005)
DC Special: The Return of Donna Troy  # 1-4. (2005)
Nightwing vol 2 # 107–117. (Dick leaves Nightwing, starts working for the mob and trains Deathstroke's daughter. I think the author has some kind of resolution to the crisis Dick had gone through the last years in mind, but Infinite Crisis got in the way. Blüdhaven is destroyed in a nuclear explosion.)
Tumblr media
Infinite Crisis. (DC had planned to let Dick die, he is central to the story even if he's not very visible.) (2005-2006)
Targets. Nightwing vol 2 # 125-128. (Dick hunts for a day job in New York and gets buried alive, which leads to some retrospection on his behalf. There's also fights with a guy with a weaponized armour.) (2007)
Tumblr media
The Brave and the Bold # 15. Nightwing and Hawkman. (Deadman, inside Hawkman, says that Dick Grayson is the one guy that every crimefighter trusts.) (2007)
Outsiders: Five of a Kind – Nightwing/Boomerang. (It ends with Batman telling Dick: "Go back to the good fight, Dick. Leave the bad fight to us.") (2007)
Wrath Child. (A story from when Dick was fairly new as Nightwing.) Batman Confidential # 13-16. (2008)
Freefall. Nightwing vol 2 # 140–146. (Dick starts freefalling as a new hobby; Bruce is not pleased. And he gets a new daytime job, as a museum curator. Oh, and there's Talia al Ghul, too.) (2008)
Robin # 175. (Some fun panels with flashbacks with Dick and Tim.) (2008)
The Great Leap. Nightwing vol 2 # 147–151. (Two-Face wants Nightwing to save a life.) (2008-2009)
Titans (2008) # 10. (Dick leaves the Titans because he needs to go back to Gotham and "take care of my other family." (2009)
Tumblr media
Nightwing vol 2 # 152-153. (That time when Ra's al Ghul called Dick detective. And Dick packed up and left New York to move back to Gotham.) (2009)
Batman # 682. (Just for the line about how Dick made colour come into their monochrome lives ;-) ) (2009)
Detective Comics # 85, Batman # 684 (Dick mourning Bruce) (2009)
The Secret Six # 9. (Some of the members of the Secret Six feel they should be the new Batman.) (2009)
Battle for the Cowl # 1-3. (2009)

Tim Drake Week 2017 - Day 7: Free Day
Category : Gen/Pre-Slash
Genre : Angst / Fluff / Friendship
Fandoms : DC Comics, Young Justice
Continuity : Post-Crisis/Pre-Flashpoint
Summary : “If you love them put your pride aside and apologize” is one of the worst advice I’ve ever seen in stories on how to deal with problems in Relationships
Or How did Tim and Kon really solve their problems when Tim came back to Young Justice ?
Word Count : 1804
To read it on AO3
Author’s notes (Under the Cut) :
Happens after Young Justice #46 Especially after this obviously it’s about the Our World at War arc, this moment of YJ #38 play an important part of this.
As the summary says : “If you love them put your pride aside and apologize” is one of the worst advice I’ve ever seen in stories on how to deal with problems. It’s, luckily, something Young Justice never did but they passed over this and it bothered me so here’s a filler, that explains how Tim and Kon’s friendship really started. Because I think this talk with Supergirl helped shape Kon so much and it especially helped in his friendship with Tim.
Kon couldn’t help but feel a little anxious as he stood in front of Robin’s door. Still he steeled his nerves and knocked. Hoping Robin -Tim, he had wanted to know the name of the closes person he had to a best friend for months but wasn’t used to it yet- had somehow disappeared into a parallel universe or, more simply, gone back to Gotham without any of them noticing, so he wouldn’t answer his door. His hope disappeared as the door opened revealing the former/new member of Young Justice in all his Robin glory, including the damn mask. But Kon was just happy to have the boy back and forced the remark back in his mind. It sadly reminded him on the reason for his fidgeting in front of Robin’s -Tim’s- door. Said Robin looked surprised to see Kon -and why wouldn’t he?- but opened his door nonetheless:
“Hey Kon, do you want something?” He paused, seemingly remembering something and asked as he sat himself on his desk chair “Is it urgent ? Because it’s pretty late I was going to go back to Gotham.”
Kon recoiled a little but steeled himself again (he had quite a few jokes about him stealing Steel’s ability to Steel himself).
“I’m not sure, but I really don’t want it to wait another day. I’d rather have it be done and over with.”
Tim -he got it right, finally!- stiffened slightly. “Look if you’re having second thoughts about me coming back-”
“What? No dummy! I just kept moping around without you and Bart. It just didn’t feel right without the two of you.” Kon replied as he waved off Tim’s comment like it was a personal offence. He paused then sighed and dropped on Tim’s bed as looked at his feet -it’s not like he could look the boy in the eyes anyway. “But it is linked to that.” He took a deep breath. “The thing is, I get why you left but dude, you never even said goodbye. I mean you did to the others but I came back to Cassie spouting something about forgetting what she said before and I tried the apology I wanted to make to you on her -not that it was completely false, after all I should have listened to her but she still took it weirdly. You were already gone and I get that you felt like you had to leave but you didn’t even try to talk things through with us.”
Kon was almost breathless -or as breathless as he could be anyway- and everything was silent for a few minutes as Tim seemed to take it in before answering calmly.
“I’m sorry Kon I didn’t know you were going to apologize, it’s just that my Identity is linked to Batman’s and I wasn’t going to betray his trust no matter what. So you would have kept being frustrated and so would I and…I had a lot of stuff to deal with at that point and It just didn’t seem to be worth the struggle. But now that you know my real name it’s a moot point anyway”
“But it’s not!” Kon yelled as he stood up, frowning at Tim. “The point is still there. You just said it yourself we weren’t worth the struggle. I can get the girls, maybe, but Bart and I weren’t worth the struggle. You didn’t even reveal your name we just found out because of the situation. Would you have ever come back without it? Or if you had stayed would you have ever revealed your name without the Bedlam situation? Would you care enough to? Tim my apology was only about my behavior because I do cherish what we had but the truth is that because of this whole secret I.D thing what we had amounted to almost nothing. The only reason you’re my best friend is because, everyone left me, I lost touch with my former team and I live in a lab and am mostly surrounded by adults so that Young Justice is the only place where I have real actual friends and Bart acts like a three years old most of the time, Cissie left, Cassie has a crush on me so she acts weirdly from time to time, Greta mostly has eyes for you but she also behaves like a kid who’s around Bart’s age, Lobo is annoying and Anita is mostly friends with Cassie even if she is great. You’re my best friend by default because of that but from the little I knew about you when you were not being Condescending Leader I knew we could be friends but never really were. I was frustrated because no matter what you never opened up and you were distant and I get that it’s your role as Robin but do you even understand the kind of frustration I, Bart, the rest of the team went through? I wanted to apologize for my behavior but not for my frustration. So no. It’s not a moot point!”
If Kon was breathless before then now he didn’t know what it was. He felt vulnerable in a way he had tried to avoid for months. Tim seemed speechless too and, while he was afraid he’d make Rob-, Tim leave again, he couldn’t stand by and let it fester. He just wasn’t made of that wood. He tried but he wanted to be friends with Tim and he knew they could be but for that they needed to really be on the same page. He hoped Tim understood that. But if he didn’t Kon wouldn’t be able to stand being in the same place and he already had to change his whole life and go live in Hicksville, he didn’t want to have to deal with Tim leaving again or them just ignoring each other. Kon startled when he felt Tim sit beside him. He had almost forgotten they were in the same room. And now they were only a few inches apart which was surprising for Mr. “I’m the mini Night even if I definitely not as bad as my mentor”. Tim took off his mask and looked at Kon while also trying to avoid complete eye contact and started fidgeting too. Holy Awkwardness Batman. Tim’s eyes started looking all around the room as he started talking:
“Kon I’m sorry that’s not what I meant. I just thought it was obvious. I wasn’t here by obligation we created this team simply to have an excuse to hang out. It took me barely two weeks before I started asking Batman to tell you my identity. Showing you my face was almost like Christmas because of how relentless he and Nightwing are about not giving a hint about who we might be. I, I would have left before if I really didn’t care enough to tell you my name. After the Olympics probably, or that thing with Doiby or when we ended up on New Genesis. But then there was… I wasn’t ready to tell my name to Spoiler, I mean we went through some stuff that definitely brings people together but things became too serious too fast and we hadn’t completely connected and, it’s just, it was pretty complicated and then Batman revealed my identity to her simply because he was petty and didn’t want to talk with one of the people I was living with but was worried because I had been trapped for a couple of days and they had no idea of my whereabouts. So I was having trust issues with him myself and then you compared me to him and said you didn’t trust me and it was, just too much to deal with. I’m not…good at this stuff so I needed to remove myself a little from the situation in order to deal with it on my own before being able to face anyone. I’m sorry I’m not used to having so many people to deal with and I got overwhelmed. You’re right we were never really friends and that’s why it wasn’t worth it for me. It wasn’t about you and Bart it was about me having to cut my losses and I just didn’t see any way this would end well and it just seemed simpler to cut ties then than after the tenth time we’d have accidentally killed each other because of our arguments. And I…I knew you wouldn’t take it well and I just. I was a coward and took the easy way out, leaving with Bart when he left.”
They were touching now, right thigh and knee against left thigh and knee, right shoulder to the elbow against left shoulder to the elbow. It was comforting, even if they were both awkward. Neither used to contact that didn’t come from a girl (and what was up with that? Sure he really liked girls but he didn’t actually have an issue with hugging guys, so why did he never do it? Not that it would be the case here. Tim would probably go back into his rabbit hole if he did one more move)
“Ok”
“Ok?” Tim looked up and turned his head back toward Kon. “What’s Okay?”
“Well you know, Okay I get it, you’re forgiven. Wait Am I forgiven?” Kon frowned. He had assumed he was, but maybe it made it worse, maybe-
“Of course, you are. We were both victims of the circumstances and we’re both jerks. And you were right. We needed to talk, I’m glad we cleared that up now.”
Kon couldn’t help but beam at that. And with that simple talk, he and Tim had been more vulnerable to each other than they had been to anybody else in a while. With that they were really starting to build a friendship. And now he understood what Supergirl had told him. Apologizing wasn’t about who was right or wrong, it was simply about opening communication. It’s something he wished was explained on TV instead of simply using the “you love them so put your pride aside and apologize” logic. Because things didn’t work like that. While putting your pride aside was important, ignoring that you considered something wrong or that something hurt you was more detrimental to the relationship (no matter what kind) than anything else. And Kon just wanted to have one relationship to go right in his life and if it was with the clearly emotionally wrecked boy with whom he had a strange connection, well, then so be it1.
So when Tim started to leave for Gotham, Kon went back to the Kent’s farm and even if he had to live there now. He couldn’t help but be happy because this time he could really call Tim his friend, even his best friend and absolutely mean it.
Author’s Note 2 : Hope you enjoyed it :)That advice from YJ #38 is something that matters to me a lot because usually in fiction when someone gives the advice to apologize whether you’re right or wrong it’s to finish an argument. However here Supergirl’s advice while similar, proves to not be when she gives the alternative to Kon. Because it’s not about finishing an argument but opening a dialogue. It’s something that always bothered me in other fictions because the person apologizing (whether the narrative considered they had actually been wronged or not) were hurt. And they’re literally apologizing for being hurt. So this issue back when I first read it was a jewel. Also we’ve seen Conner use a similar technique at least twice on Tim (the only two times Tim did something stupid to him) so I’m pretty sure he took it to heart.

Can I get an opinion on what you'd say dick's relationships with the rest of the batclan are like?
Based on Rebirth, Post-Crisis and whatever small amount of new 52 I’ve absorbed. Some of these I’m more sure on then others due to what runs in comics i’ve experienced first hand.
Bruce: Given half a chance they still butt heads. They’re still very close even with that occasional tension and relate to each other on a more casual level despite their parent-child relationship. They fall into sync very quickly when working together. Dick will not hesitate to call Bruce out on his bullshit.
Alfred: Dick is a lot like Bruce in many ways (even if he wouldn’t like it pointed out or admit to it) and Alfred knows it. Whenever Dick tries to walk off a serious injury (he does this a lot boy is Bruce’s for sure) Alfred will make him turn around and take care of himself. Dick has a lot of respect for Alfred and Alfred is quite practiced at navigating the tension between Bruce and Dick.
Barbara: Ummm, this is hard because Post-Crisis Oracle and new 52/Rebirth Batgirl are...so different. Just like Tim differs so much between the continuities, so does Barbara. Anyway, these guys love each other and always will, even if nothing romantic ever comes together for them. They know each other very well and will get to the heart of a problem when one of them is brooding. They are scarily effective when working together and (in continuities with Oracle) kind of both look out for the younger members of the clan quite a bit.
Jason: Dick still probably harbors that old guilt about Jason’s death. It used to crop up in the old Nightwing runs and before the retcons that put them more at odds, Dick had gotten over his issues for the most part and given his old Robin costume to Jason and felt like if he’d been around more Jason might not have died. They do clash, especially when Jason is at odds with the family, and Dick has Opinions about the way Jason does things and Jason finds Dick ridiculously overbearing and high and mighty, but as Jason comes back to the family Dick does accept and obviously care for him as one of his little brothers. They get along better and relate as brothers now, but they’re not quite at the friends point.
Tim: This is the hardest one because...there is just such a disconnect between Post-Crisis Tim and new 52 Tim and I’m not sure Rebirth Tim and Dick have really interacted? Anyway, Dick and Tim have a fairly long-standing relationship as brothers, before they were ever legally related as such. They know each other really well and care about each other a lot. Tim probably still has issues regarding Damian and what happened when Bruce was dead. Dick is probably guilty about that but also because of the way Tim internalizes probably thinks it’s in the past. I’m really not sure where they are as of Rebirth though, tbh.
Cass: They aren’t as close as some of the others but they work well together and do enjoy each other’s company. Dick was very standoffish when Cass became the new Batgirl (like Barbara was for the new Robin, tbh) but Dick was also a bit of a jerk to Tim originally as well, and Jason, and you kind of get a theme here. Cass I think looks up to Dick as a more experienced vigilante and likes him, and Dick likewise warmed up to Cass and worked well with her.
Steph: These two are probably friendly enough but Dick was definitely not as close to Steph initially as she was to others. He was away in another city for a lot of the time so they never really spent time together. He knew her as Tim’s girlfriend and not really as her own person. During the period when Dick was Batman was where he actually got to know her more as herself and respect her as a vigilante. They’re definitely still not the closest, but they probably tease Damian together.
Damian: They adore each other no matter what protests Damian might make. Bruce dropped the ball with Damian initially and Dick picked it up and he’s the reason Damian is who is he is now. They are very close and Damian openly acknowledges Dick as his brother, but they’re coded quite strongly with parent-child overtones due to the role Dick took while Bruce was gone. Damian is heavily invested in the idea of Bruce as his father but he loves Dick and Dick adores him right back.
Duke: Very much ‘old hand teaching the new guy the ropes’ here. I think Dick sees a lot of potential in Duke and Duke respects Dick for his abilities and achievements. Very chill pair. Not quite brothers at this stage but once they get that far Dick will probably appreciate how steady Duke is. He’s probably going to be the least troublesome little brother XD
it’s late, anyone I’ve missed is probably not someone who Dick interacts with a lot (Kate) so I don’t have a lot of thoughts or someone I have literally no idea about (Harper), or i’ve literally just...blanked and someone can poke me and i’ll add them.
This is very much just my interpretation with probably some headcanon mixed in and your mileage may vary.

The DC Comics Timeline (aka, get that Nu52 five year timeline bs OUTTA MY FACE)
Trying my best to put this into an extremely simplified format. This is basically the post-Crisis/New Earth inspired Elseworlds I would write it if DC called me up tomorrow. I wouldn’t want to wade in the Nu52 and start retconning things around to suit me, even if I could get away with it--there’s been quite enough of that from Messners Didio and Johns. I’d rather just tell a damn good story in its own continuity and have that continuity as close to fan-preferred status as possible. Please feel free to debate and comment, I’d love to hear any feedback.
The Zeroth Generation: WW2 and the Justice Society of America, among others. Through various circumstances, a number of these heroes find themselves in stasis to reawaken in the more proper Age of Heroes.
The Lost Generation: Scattered superheroes between the end of the Zeroth Generation and the beginning of the Age of Heroes. Not many are of note; the frequency and fame of these heroes is more akin to guys like the Viking Prince and Jonah Hex pre-Zeroth Generation. Someone’s putting on tights, but it’s largely unremarkable.
The First Generation: (15-10 years before present day) The Age of Heroes begins with Superman debuting in Metropolis, having wandered the globe on a Quest for Peace (heh) since his high school graduation. Urban legends spread of the Batman of Gotham, while Diana leaves Paradise Island for Man’s World. In short order, the rest of the ‘Big Seven’ show up: Green Lantern, the Flash, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter. Over this five year period, the Justice League is formed, then expands its ranks. Many of the heroes acquire sidekicks, who themselves form the Teen Titans. This era roughly corresponds to pre-Crisis comics, John Bryne’s initial Man of Steel comic, Miller’s Batman: Year One (and ensuing stories), the Happy Harbor and Satellite Era of the Justice League, and George Perez’s Wonder Woman stories*. Most heroes are somewhere in their twenties, while sidekicks are adolescents (let’s say Dick Grayson becomes Robin age twelve-ish).
The Second Generation: (10-5 years before present day) The Justice League transitions into the ‘Bwa-Ha-Ha’ Justice League International, the Teen Titans become the New Teen Titans, the Suicide Squad is formed. New heroes are born, following the example of the First Generation. Old sidekicks graduate to higher statuses (Dick Grayson becomes Nightwing, Wally West becomes the Flash, Donna Troy becomes Troia) and new sidekicks take their place (Jason Todd becomes Robin II). This era roughly corresponds to post-Crisis comics of the eighties and early nineties, starting from the Legends miniseries and continuing onward. Adult heroes are entering their thirties. First generation sidekicks are in their teens and very early twenties (Dick Grayson was about 18 and in college when NTT started).
The Third Generation: (5 years ago to present day) The latest generation of heroes and sidekicks arrive, from Tim Drake/Robin III to Cassie Sandsmark/Wonder Girl II to Connor Hawke/Green Arrow II. The Big Seven return to the Justice League, building a new base on the Moon known as the Watchtower. Young Justice is formed. This era roughly corresponds to the post-Crisis comics of the 90s and early 00s, including Grant Morrison’s JLA. It runs until Identity Crisis/Infinity Crisis. Adult heroes are in their thirties and forties (Bruce and Clark have some white hairs). First generation sidekicks are solidly in their twenties.
There’s also a Fourth Generation, obviously, covering the late Aughts and Tens which we’re in now, introducing new heroes/sidekicks like Harper Row, Jessica Cruz, and Jonathan Kent. However, as this period also leads into Flashpoint and strongly features the replacement of legacy heroes with their predecessors--Barry Allen retaking the Flash mantle from Wally West, Hal Jordan doing the same to Kyle Raynor, etc.--I prefer not to acknowledge it in favor of setting my tale within Third Generation and continuing that thread. Also, the new characters I mentioned are largely still being ‘field-tested’ by their creators, so for my purposes, I’d prefer not to give ‘my take’ on characters who largely aren’t established enough for me to give them a take.
I also reserve the right to screw around with canon a bit for the sake of storytelling. So, for instance, in mainstream canon, Barry Allen would die in CoIE right between the first and second generations and by the Third Generation Wally would be married to Linda and starting a family. Because I want to write a love story between them, I put off Barry’s death until the third generation, so Wally has only been The Flash for a few years and is just now meeting Linda. That gives us quite a few stories that strictly speaking didn’t happen, but it’s an AU anyway, and at least I’m not making you read about Barry fucking Allen fucking Patty fucking Spivot.
*Technically, those stories took place during the Second Generation, five years after Superman and Batman had debuted, but no one really likes that retcon and it totally fucks up Donna Troy being a Titan. So... Hypertime.

Tim Drake Week 2017 - Day 6 (part 2): Crossover
Category : Gen
Genre : Angst / Murder / Mystery
Fandoms : DC Comics, Slayers! (Anime)
Continuity : Post-Crisis/Pre-Flashpoint
Summary : Young Justice finds itself face to face with The Greatest Witch in the world and her friends.
Author’s notes : At first I wanted it to be Young JusticexAnimaniacs, but then I realized I didn't not have the experience or ability or mastery over the english language to do that yet. But one day I will (I want Impulse to meet Slappy and Whacko).
Anyway I have little memories of Slayers! as I haven't watched the anime in 7 years nor read the books in over 10 years. So my memories are fuzzy at best. Most of my memories come from the anime so most of the names I think of use the french translation for it rather than the english one I learned when I read the book. I hope the spelling isn't too far from the english version. I wrote this on the subway so I didn't have internet to verify my sources and, honestly I barely managed to keep it around 1000 words which was actually one of the goals I gave myself for this Tim Drake Week (1000 words or less) which was already failed for 3 stories and I know that if I tried to research (and rewatch/reread the series because I'm like that), I'd go way overboard with that....As for the Animaniacs, one day I will do it (actually there’s way more chances than for the Animaniacs)
Word Count : 2918
To read it on AO3
Day 6 (Part 1) : AU
Tim couldn't believe it. He was supposed to go on a date with Steph in the morning and here he and his team were, faced with a red-headed girl wearing a strange red and yellow outfit with a black cape (not that he had much room to talk), some sort of fire dancing in her hands, a really tall man with long blond hair wearing some sort of blue overall and a breast plate, a sword seemingly made of light drawn toward them, a man with green, rock-like skin with his own sword drawn and a young girl who seemed to belong in any other place rather than this one due to being as normal looking as they come (not that Tim would make the mistake of underestimate her if she wasn't fazed by them appearing out of seemingly nowhere…not that it meant anything). They were in a pretty standard forest. He could go on and on about the different trees but he would probably get bored just thinking about it. He still noticed a path parallel to the one they were on, if smaller and that the trees seemed tall, wide and strong enough to stand and run on as well as to use his grappling hook.
"Hello hum sorry to bother you but…where are we?" Anita's presence was a life saver, as always.
The red headed young woman looked at them suspiciously before sighing and making the fire disappear from her hands.
"Alright guys stand down", she started saying before the other girl pushed ahead and took Superboy's hand into her own, effectively interrupting the red head who seemed to look increasingly more annoyed by the second.
"I see that you are wearing quite colorful uniforms! Are you part of a drama troupe? Are you playing Hero minions?"
She then surprised everyone present, with the exception of her three companions, by jumping onto the branch of one of the trees and started screaming:
"I am Amelia Will Tesla Seilune! Princess of the Kingdom of Seilune! I am the bringer of Justice of the land! I am…"
Tim stopped listening as Superboy and Impulse leaned toward him and started whispering:
"Guys do you think that she's like a mix between Batman, Nightwing and Robin's girlfriend?"
"Shut up Kon" Tim answered while Kon and Bart stifled a laugh and only stopped when the girl, Amelia, started falling but was luckily caught in the air by Wonder Girl.
Their four hosts looked at the flying blond with surprised, Tim realized then that they could very well be in a dangerous place for metas. He should have thought to tell his friends not to use their powers in unknown places until they were sure it was safe or unless absolutely needed. Here Cassie could have waited until the girl was almost on the ground.
"Are you a dragon? No but you didn't transform. HAVE YOU SEEN THIS MISS LINA ? This girl flew without using a spell!"
Or not, apparently it's not flying itself that was a problem for them. The red head still looked suspiciously at them even if saving the girl seemed to have slightly helped their cause. She looked at their group before asking:
"Where do you come from? Are you even humans? Or Demons?"
Tim tried to take the time to think his answer through but before he could Bart beat him to it:
"We're from a parallel universe or something like that and most of us are humans, some of us are just have special abilities!"
Tim couldn't help the fingers that started massaging the bridge of his nose. Neither could Superboy, Wonder Girl and Empress. The red head smirked before she started staring at us. She then shared a look with the rock skinned man who nodded then turned back to us and said:
"You can't be from Dark Star's world. Are you from Chaotic Blue's or Death Fog's?"
"Who? What?" was all Tim would think to answer the man.
"They're the Demon Lords of two of the four known worlds that stems from the Sea of Chaos. Each world has a Demon Lord and a God", the red head explained with a detached air, "I suppose none of you are from there then?"
"Yeah usually the different universes we can go from and to are linked through hypertime nothing called the sea of chaos…It could be just a different name due to different cultures but the principle of the Demon Lord vs God doesn't really exist in those…Unless" he turned to his friends "Do you guys think Darkseid and the Highfather could be that?"
And that was it. They started talking amongst them, then talking with the group of four. Trying to find a way. After a while the only ones left in the conversation were the red head and rock-skinned man, whom they learned were called Lina Inverse and Zelgadis Greyword, Kon, Bart and himself.
As they reached a point of understanding (there's little chance of their own world coming from the same "Sea of Chaos", however it was possible that they came from their own sea of Chaos which would suggest that Hypertime was actually a being? It was confusing), a light surrounded Tim's group and they were back at the mansion.
Tim turned toward his friends who were making sure they were whole by patting their body. They all turned to each other and kind of shrugged at each other deciding unanimously that Robin was the one who would write the report as the others all went up to their rooms.
Dejected Tim went to the main computer and started writing the report about the alternate world they went to for about 10 minutes and just seemed like a weird dream. When he reached "his" room (there was nothing of his in there) he couldn't help the smile at the small Superboy memorabilia Wonder Girl had left for him on his pillow after they had come back from watching Cissie at the Olympics (and their baseball game far far away) as a thank you for calling Kon out on his machismo. His night was filled with strange dreams of a weird man with a huge mustache wearing clothes strangely similar to that of an eccentric young girl, spouting a similar speech to what Amelia had yelled earlier.
Author’s Note 2 : Here it is. I'm honestly underwhelmed by it. It ends too quickly with little description of what's happening and I barely used the characters (then again there are way too many characters. at first I thought of placing it before the girls arrive in YJ but I wanted to place Anita).YET I still like it and honestly wanted to post it if only because of Amelia. But mostly because I love that universe and even if it's barely there, just writing about it felt pretty great and made me want to rewatch and re-read it.So I I hope you were at least entertained by it because I know I was :)
