Currently feeling personally victimized (yet again) by YJanimated Kon and Clark. Because it’s a slightly different flavor that could have been so good if it was good (it wasn’t)

I just feel like there’s a subtle difference in feeling between “died and came back to several replacement Supermen and one of them is a clone.” And “a completely ordinary day interrupted by finding out that someone made a clone of you without your consent.” Something about the mundanity of it. There was no real reason to clone Superman except that they could.

And like that opens up a lot of opportunities for ideas like. “Clark may be physically invulnerable for the most part, but he still has feelings and those can be used to hurt him.” Or “Kon has to exist in a world that has never ‘needed’ another Superman because the first one was never gone. What does that do to his self image?”

We could have seen a nebulous relationship develop where they don’t know what they are to each other but they still care about each other!!!! Where the label doesn’t matter because the love is there!! We could have seen Clark showing Kon Kryptonian things and in doing so be saying “I may not have known you existed, but I’m glad I know you now.”

But noooooooooo. Daddy issues. Boring.

yeahhhhh. honestly i don't even have much to add bc yjtv conner is just so completely removed from og kon that to me he's an entirely different character, but i so agree that the clark character assassination that came out of yjtv is just suuuuch a missed opportunity.

i am forever and always an advocate of superboy (1994), i firmly believe you will Not get a proper grasp of kon's character unless you have read it!!! it is a story of a kid who gets groomed and exploited in many ways but is trying really hard to be a hero and if hes facing the horrors no he isn't because he stays silly :3 and he looks up to superman so much and he wants a family and he doesn't know how to express any of that because his independence matters to him so much too and. and im not even getting into the horrors. his depression is so real. and you can just really see his character arc through it all and augh. also nowhere outside of sb94 do you really get to see the full extent of kon's trauma and tragedy. he's a goofy little guy but he's also so kind and so much smarter than he gives himself credit for. and it gets me. it is not always an easy book to read bc of said horrors but my god does it compel me <3

if you haven't read the reign of the supermen event, that's where he's introduced and is the best starting point for him. sb94 picks up after it ends. there are a few various crossover events and stuff in early sb94 which can be kinda confusing if you arent that familiar with comics or with whats going on with supers at the time, but there's a fairly standalone story arc in most of it aside from those!

the basic kon reading order is like. rots, sb94 and yj98, then teen titans/yj graduation day, then tt03, adventure comics '09, and superboy (2011). theres some other konmics in here that im leaving out but ask me tomorrow if you want more deets on that/his general arc and stuff!

ALSO i gotta say - supergirl (2005) gets REALLY good after its initial extremely rough and misogynistic beginnings. while i def agree the early stuff in there makes the first few issues like... the second-worst comic run ive ever read, i skipped to issue #26 and read from there to the end, and it has some GOOD stuff, including kara's parts of new krypton arc and the aftermath! (incidentally, new krypton is probably my fav superfam event that i've read so far, and does include some kara & clark stuff!)

Please gimme kon centric comic recommendations

I just read young justice the 90s one (not done) and I think I'm In love with him as a character but I don't really know where to go from here(I know i could Google I kind of just wanted to hear your recommendations and thoughts on kon's comics and kon as a character)

Also if you have any super team ups recs comics and fics(with Kara and kal especially) I would LOVE to see them

i know kara and kal teamed up in precrisis but i am not really a precrisis person...and i cant say that i recommend that early 2000s run where she was reintroduced and spent all her time shopping before going to Themyscira 😭 But recent AC has the superfam working as a unit, and STAS has a couple episodes with kara and clark working together! for that matter, so does 2022 Worlds Finest (which you should read anyway, its so good).

superman: the man of steel #63 is literally so good. clark gets kidnapped while depowered and lois goes off the shits about it!!! she will blow this whole building up see if she doesn't!!! and the way he just has faith in her coming for him and is like "well if i keep them busy torturing me instead of looking for her, she'll have an easier time sneaking in and getting us both out of here" meanwhile she's like THEYRE TORTURING MY HUSBAND?! ILL KILL THEM. them flirting with each other the entire time theyre escaping bc its still their honeymoon. clark leaning on lois. lois admitting she understands the overprotectiveness now. the kiss against the explosions in the backdrop. my god. who is fucking doing it like clois!!!!!

depends on what you're looking for! sb94 is a very flawed run for sure, but it's near and dear to my heart because kon-el is my favorite dc character by a long shot. depending on what characters and stuff you're interested in, there's a lot of good comics out there for sure!! any idea what you want to read?

have been losing my mind abt clois here since last night btw. theyre engaged and lois has been worried out of her mind bc he got kidnapped by aliens and she had no word for like two weeks and had to deal the stress of not knowing if he was okay and having to cover for him at the daily planet and just... being alone. and her unshakeable faith in him juxtaposed with the way he's her best friend... man. exquisite clois angst here. im wailing into my hands btw
