Batfam Kill Counts

I believe that the kill counts for the Batfam are in the following order: 1. Jason (~500); 2. Tim (100-300); 3. Alfred (20-100); 4. Damian (~50); 5. Bruce (5-10); 6. Dick (1-5); 7. Cass (1)

However, based on the absolute certain facts and not just speculation, kill counts are as follows, I believe: 1. Jason (83 confirmed); 2. Alfred (many); 3. Damian (3+); 4&5. Cass & Bruce (1); 6. Dick (1-ish); 7. Everyone else (0)

These aren’t counting vampires or pre-crisis early Batman characterization. I have probably missed some stuff because I have only read some comics, but from what I’ve read and Google this is my general understanding.

Reasoning explained:

1. Jason — Jason has 83 confirmed kills, but honestly I don’t buy that he hasn’t killed more than that. I’m interpreting “confirmed” as in “we have absolute proof that the Red Hood killed them” whereas his actual kill count is much higher. I headcanon it as somewhere around 500 people, but the number could be in the thousands.

2. Tim — This one’s controversial…I personally think Tim killed people when blowing up the League of Assassins bases, but not nearly as many as people often say. He definitely blew up the bases BY blowing up their computer systems, and there are explosions shown. Probably around 100-300 people, as a side effect and not the goal.

3. Alfred — Served in the military, but people SEVERELY overestimate the number of kills a soldier would have from that, especially as he presumably wasn’t dropping bombs. In WWII estimates for average number of kills per soldier range from 5-20. Alfred was likely exceptional, but I doubt that he killed more than 100 people. He may actually be #4 on this list, with fewer kills than Damian.

4. Damian — Confirmed kills are Spook and Nobody, and he did those so easily that he has DEFINITELY killed routinely, but again, I think people attribute far more kills to him than he actually has done. He was raised in the League of Assassins, but they don’t just kill willy-nilly. He’s probably killed <10 people to prove he’s capable of it and <100 people (maybe even 0) for the League. Overall, I don’t buy that Damian has killed more than 60 people.

5. Bruce — I think he has accidentally killed a significant number of people. This one’s also controversial, but his methods are brutal and he’s been working for a long time. It’s likely that he’s done enough damage that the criminal dies in the hospital multiple times. He’s also done things like leaving KGBeast to die trapped underground or bleeding out unable to move in the tundra by his hand. I don’t think he’s watched someone die by his hands, but…yeah. He has also killed Darkseid for sure.

6. Dick — Killed Joker (who was revived soon afterwards, so it half-counts), has also worked with Batman so long that I think he has killed other people by accident too. Has also displayed disregard for if his actions result in a criminal being killed by other criminals, especially early on in Nightwing (1996). Considers himself to have killed Blockbuster, but…yeah no.

7. Cass — 1 confirmed kill. After that, she ran and put in a large amount of effort to avoid killing ever again. She became evil, but I’m pretty sure this has been unwritten and most people refuse to accept it anyway.

To my knowledge, Steph, Barbara, and Duke haven’t killed anyone, and likely have not accidentally killed anyone either due to their methods.

In issue # 110 of Nightwing (1996), why did Dick look irritated (and clench his fist) when Tim told him that Bruce considered adoption (which Tim rejected obvs), especially since Tim's dad was killed (and Dick knows that)?

Very short answer: it's the trauma

So the thing is, this is a heartbreaking issue that requires a lot of footnoting, because the emotional undercurrents are BIG and POWERFUL but the dialogue is deliberately understated?? and Dick and Tim are often not saying what they mean?? or just straight-up lying to each other?? and they're TALKING PAST EACH OTHER because

they both suck at communication

they are not even TRYING to communicate their actual problems - like, if Tim straight-up said, "A bunch of people I love are dead and I keep having nightmares about how it's my fault and I'm guilty and miserable and lonely and avoiding Bruce and I came to your city because I was reeling and I missed you and I didn't know what else to do and now I'm scared you're mad at me," that would crack through Dick's determination to keep his distance because Dick's whole thing here is based on the conviction that Tim is fine, but of course Tim doesn't say any of that, and Dick can't read his mind. And Dick's not quite as determined a liar as Tim so Tim is able to figure out a little more of what's going on with Dick vis-a-vis insecurities, but Tim's still completely missing what a colossal mess Dick is right now, and again: this is because he's not a mind-reader and Dick doesn't tell him! And doesn't want to tell him! And doesn't want him to know! So Tim thinks that Dick's maybe acting this way because he's mad at Tim, and he tries to solve the problem from that angle, even though that's not at all what's going on and actually Dick's miserable and traumatized and mad at himself

I love it so much

So the short-ish answer to your question is, Tim's correctly guessed at some of Dick's insecurities here. Dick's not mad that Tim's in the city, but Tim's right that the adoption was a big deal to Dick, and he's right that Dick's a little threatened by the idea of Tim getting adopted too. (This wouldn't normally be the case! But Dick was kinda uneasy about Tim in the early days when his own relationship to Bruce felt very shaky, and right now Dick's feeling like he's lost Bruce again, and when he's insecure about himself he tends to slide into seeing Tim as a rival - both in vigilante terms and in terms of a connection to Bruce.)

And probably the main reason Dick's so stunned - and a bit angry - here is because Bruce didn't tell him, and although this is very different from Bruce not telling him about adopting Jason... it's still jabbing at those old wounds.

BUT THE LONGER ANSWER is important! Dick loves Tim, a lot!! SO MUCH. He watches Tim sadly from a distance and thinks about how much he loves him in this very comic! So why isn't Dick more enthusiastic about the potential adoption? Why is he skulking around in alleys being miserable and self-destructive and avoiding Tim so determinedly that Tim's convinced he's offended Dick somehow? What's going on???

Well, Dick's life has been imploding.

So to really answer your question, we have to back up a bit and get the context of what's going on with Dick and Tim prior to this comic.

I started writing about this and it got way out of hand, so below please find a guide to my four-part manifesto about Nightwing 110 and what's going on and why I think it's great:

Images: a reporter is shot and killed in front of Dick in N 93; a few days later, Darla is shot and killed in front of Tim in R 129; a blood-covered Dick turns from Blockbuster's body in N 93; a blood-covered Tim stares at his father's body in IC 6

Timeline-wise, we're in The Bad Year for Dick and Tim. Dick's life has been FALLING APART. Blockbuster figured out his secret identity and started murdering his entire supporting cast: Blockbuster hired someone to attack Haly's Circus, blew up Dick's entire apartment building, and shot a reporter in front of Dick. In the climactic confrontation, Catalina Flores killed Blockbuster and raped Dick.

More or less simultaneously in War Games, Tim's life has ALSO been falling apart and his supporting cast has been getting gruesomely murdered. In quick succession, Jack figured out Tim's secret and Tim had to quit, Steph got hired and fired as Robin; Steph accidentally started a gang war; Darla got shot and killed in front of Tim during the gang war; Steph got killed by Black Mask; and Jack Drake got killed by Captain Boomerang.

It's a grimdark time in DC comics.

Dick's slowly recovering in the Manor as Bruce recaps recent events to him (Batman 634)

Now, Dick's actually part of War Games - very briefly. A day or two after Blockbuster's death, Bruce calls Dick for help, and Dick comes to Gotham. Dick and Tim briefly interact but Gotham is in flames, they're both freaking out, and they don't really help each other - Tim tries to tell Dick about Darla, and Dick shuts him down (not realizing Darla is actually Tim's friend); Dick has a panic attack in front of Tim and Tim drags him out of danger but gets snappish instead of worried.

AND THEN, midway through the gang war, Dick gets shot in the leg and ends up in a coma for a while. By the time he's recovered enough to wake up and walk around, Steph's dead, Jack's dead, the funerals are over, and Tim - who's avoiding Bruce - has moved to Blüdhaven.

Here's Dick trying to get answers out of Alfred in Nightwing 99 (Alfred and Bruce aren't telling him anything, either because they can't stand to talk about it or because they're worried about impeding his recovery):

Somewhere around here - presumably whenever he first learns about Jack's death? - Dick calls Tim, who doesn't pick up, in IC 7:

In Nightwing 99, it's implied that Dick leaves the Manor almost as soon as he wakes up, after confronting Bruce:

Dick can't bring himself to confess Blockbuster's death, but obliquely admits his own distress: "…Bruce, I'm lost." Bruce wants to solve things by throwing themselves into The Mission in Gotham: "It's just you and me again, Dick. But there's plenty of work to do." As he talks, Dick grabs his crutches and leaves. He confronts Catalina, arrests her, and tries to turn himself in... but Amy doesn't let him. As he's walking out, angry at Amy and at himself, a prisoner offers him a card.

Meanwhile, in the Batcave, Alfred's stunned to discover that Dick's abandoned his costume:

In Nightwing 107, we learn that Dick has ditched everything and apparently joined the mob - or is he undercover? Dick ultimately comes up with justifications for what he's doing, but a lot of what he's doing is punishing himself and hiding from his life. He's in Detroit for a while, but then has to go back to Blüdhaven, where he sees Tim...

...and now we're caught up with Nightwing 110.

Nightwing 110

I haven't had a chance to see Robin in action since the beginning of the gang wars in Gotham. It seems like just yesterday he was an earnest little computer geek too smart for his own good. He's still too smart for his own good and he can still kick butt with a search engine, but now he's a full-fledged superhero, to boot. Wonder if he knows how good he is? Not just at the fighting, but at keeping the whole thing on his terms. That's really hard to do, and Tim - he's been through so much, and weathered it so well.

Dick's been staying mostly in Detroit rather than Blüdhaven for various reasons, but one very important one is that he's been avoiding Tim.

Dick and Tim's relationship always suffers when Dick's self-worth issues get in the way, and this is probably the most dramatic moment AND IT'S SO SAAAAAD *wails*

From very early on, Dick has had a very high opinion of Tim, and - like Bruce's conviction that "you're better than me, Dick" - this is

very heartwarming and an expression of Dick's faith in Tim

very important to Tim, who tries really hard to impress Dick and (like Dick) hangs a lot of his self-worth on being needed and useful

a source of many sweet moments

but also

a source of problems in their relationship, because Dick's high opinion of Tim and low opinion of himself means he consistently underestimates how important he is to Tim, wonders if Tim would be better off without him, and sometimes thinks that keeping his distance is good for Tim so that Dick doesn't bring him down... and meanwhile Tim interprets Dick's distance as disapproval or hostility

When Dick's down on himself, he'll continually compare himself unfavorably to Tim - Tim questions more, Tim's better with Bruce, Tim's got better computer skills, etc. etc.

And that's what's happening here, when Dick watches Tim fight from a distance:

Dick: Still, Timmy played it through nice and clean. Disarmed the perps, protected and avoided the cops, kept any civilians from being shot... God, I love that kid. Too much to let him see me like this.

This isn't a neutral assessment of Tim's skills. This is Dick castigating himself. The implication is: Tim plays it nice and clean, Tim kept civilians from getting shot... unlike me. Elsewhere in this arc, Dick's been convinced that he's "poison."

He can't bear to see Tim because he's certain he'll only bring Tim down.

... There's a problem with his plan, though. Tim's spotted him.

Narrator voice: they were not okay

I LOVE THIS PANEL SO MUCH

Tim spots Dick before he can sneak away, and chases after him. At first he tries to tease light-heartedly - "Look at you! Back on your feet!" - but when Dick looks away grim-faced, Tim sobers and we get a bit more of his actual worries. (Tim will sometimes fake cheerfulness when under stress - both Babs and his friends comment on this in War Games and in Teen Titans.)

Now they catch up. Tim asks Dick if he's okay. (Dick says he is. He's not.) Where he's staying. ("Some people" are the mobster family.) Dick asks Tim how his step-mom is. (Tim says she's okay. She's not. She's had a breakdown.) How school's going. (Tim says school's okay too. Actually, he's dropped out.)

And now at last we've looped back to the panels at the top! Dick tries to retreat, and Tim - convinced that Dick is mad at him, which is really not the case - tries to figure out if Dick is mad at him for coming to Blüdhaven without permission, or about Bruce's offer of adoption. (Tim's self-worth issues mean that Tim's convinced that Dick is mad at him about something, as opposed to the truth, which is that Dick is spiraling and it has nothing to do with Tim.)

Dick (turning away): We - we shouldn't be talking like this. Tim (fake-cheer, acting as if Dick means "we shouldn't be talking with you in costume and me out-of-costume"): Well, go get your gear! Dick: I can't do that. Tim (more serious now): You're not mad I'm, like, in your city or anything? Dick (shocked): NO! No. I'm honored. You have more of a right to be here than I do. Tim: Is it the adoption thing? Dick: The what? Tim: 'Cause I was a little worried about that. That's kinda part of why I said no. I mean, that and the uncle thing. I was just thinking it wasn't really all that long since he officially adopted you, which was kind of a big deal, emotionally or whatever, and to me you're like totally his son and I don't wanna step on that or anything.

Dick (whirling): What are you talking about, Tim? Bruce is going to adopt you? Tim (hands up): No! I mean, he was. But he's not now. I've got this uncle… So I don't need, you know, anything really… from Bruce, or… You, uh. You didn't know. I'm sorry, I figured he would've talked to you about it or something. Dick (turning away, jumping off the balcony): Yeah, right. Fat chance. Tim: Well anyway, it's not gonna happen, so you don't have to worry about it... right?

Dick's unnerved by the adoption offer mostly because it drives home his distance from Bruce - he didn't know Bruce was offering this, and since Dick's been thinking of himself as Estranged from Everyone Forever, it feels like Tim joining Bruce's family - replacing Dick - instead of Tim joining Dick's family. So he reacts badly - EVEN THOUGH!!! AGAIN!!! DICK LOVES TIM A LOT!!!

So Dick emphasizes the distance he's trying to create: tells Tim that whatever he does is up to him and Bruce, not Dick, because Dick's withdrawing from everything. Actually, Tim should forget that he ever knew Dick:

Dick (pulls his hood up, turns away): Look, Timmy, I'm sorry. I don't care what he does. If he can be of help to you, you should take him up on it. I wish I could offer to help you myself, but I can't. I'm not part of this anymore. This whole thing… I'm out. Tim: Yeah, right… Dick: From now on, it'd be better if you forgot you ever knew me. Tim (echoing what Dick said): ...Fat chance.

Tim's hurt by this, and he's been pretty oblivious about what's going on with Dick, but he's not an idiot, and after a moment of hesitation he correctly figures out from this ramble what Dick's not saying, which is that Dick's feeling like he's worthless to Bruce, that Bruce doesn't value him, that he's lost that relationship. So Tim impulsively tries to reassure him that Bruce does need him... but Dick's in a lousy headspace and it doesn't work:

Dick's walking away. Tim chases after him again. Tim: Hey, uh-! Remember how I once told you that Batman needed a Robin? Well, that's still true, but even more than that, he…he needs you. You know, not like every second or whatever, but at the end of the day, he needs to know you're still on his side. It's…important. Dick kicks over a newspaper stand. Dick (glaring): YOU- ! - you have no idea how much of my life I've wasted believing that was true. Dick pulls up his hood again and walks away.

(Side-note: forever wonderful to me that both Dick and Tim use "need" as a synonym for "love." Issues: they have them.)

Fix-It Fic Ideas

I have spent a lot of time thinking about potential fix-it fics for this comic (TRAGICALLY AFAIK NO ONE HAS WRITTEN ANY, FEEL FREE TO BE THE FIRST). An idea that I offer free to a good home:

A bit after Dick leaves, Tim winds up in trouble and gets injured and Dick has to rescue him (how does Dick find out about it? I dunno)

Tim's injured so naturally Dick's gonna take him back to his home with his stepmom and/or uncle

. . . except the uncle is an actor and not a very convincing one; Tim's entire edifice of lies collapses

Dick realizes that Tim is not actually weathering things well

Dick still thinks that he's poison and terrible and awful and (insert self-hating monologue here) BUT Tim living on his own after his dad is murdered is so bad as far as Dick's concerned that clearly SOME kind of intervention is necessary

Tim insists he does not need an intervention

Dick's sense of responsibility and worry over Tim now force him to carve out time from his major project of hate-myself-and-feel-bad to try to look out for Tim

Dick insists that Tim stay with him until his stepmom is better

They share an apartment for a while

They are both still super-super-super traumatized

???

eventual hugs and healing on both sides

Alternate fix-it:

Tim follows Dick back to the Tevis' house like the little stalker he is, and then introduces himself in disguise as Alvin Draper

Dick's furious and frustrated but can't do much about this without screwing up his own disguise

Tim's determined to figure out what's going on with Dick partly for altruistic reasons and partly because he's also running from his own life, but Dick doesn't figure out the second part until way later

Dick's so frustrated with Tim being here when Dick told him to go - plus wrapped up in wondering what Tim knows, and being paranoid about what he might figure out, and hating being observed - that it takes him a while to start wondering questions like, "wait, shouldn't Tim be in school"

Dick and Tim are pretending not to know each other - or pretending to have a hostile relationship, or something - so any real conversations have to be in snatches in secret

Dick tries to bluff/threaten Tim into leaving (for his own good!!) but it doesn't work

Slow crawl toward mutual awareness of trauma which they're both super-self-conscious about - Dick hears Tim crying at night; Tim hears Dick's nightmares or sees another panic attack

At some point it becomes increasingly obvious that they know each other / that their story about their relationship is fake, and when the mobsters confront them, Dick says yeah, he lied, actually Tim's his little brother, and he gives some kind of stylized version of the truth which doubles as an emotional speech to Tim who gets all choked up and hugs him

and it's very touching and emotional because remember Tim HASN'T been adopted so they're NOT brothers and Tim was worried maybe Dick didn't WANT to be brothers but Dick CONSIDERS him a brother so ;_;

??? i don't know what happens next. do they quit the mob? does Dick now explain his mob-infiltration plan to Tim?

meanwhile off-panel Bruce stops Deathstroke from blowing up Blüdhaven, well done Bruce

oh wait or maybe Cass does??

anyway Dick and Tim have hugged so then there's a happy ending

In Conclusion

IN CONCLUSION Dick and Tim should hug more and this comic proves it. Look at them! They both need hugs! They're standing so close to each other! THEY ARE MIRROR IMAGES OF TRAUMA AND BAD COPING MECHANISMS they need each other and they don't know how to say it - they want to help each other and they also don't know how to say it - they don't know how to talk to each other or to anyone else - Dick lashes out and Tim lies and they both isolate themselves and withdraw into depression loneliness even though they could help each other! and would want to help each other! but they won't ask for what they need because they don't think they deserve it and they don't realize how important they are to each other

i just think they're neat. i want to study them like bugs and rattle them around in a jar until all the masks come off and they can actually see each other clearly

31DOD Day 9

There are so many good ones to choose from, but I miss his dynamic with Roy Harper. These two characters have a long history together and no matter what way you look at them, their relationship is built on a deep foundation of love and trust.

Outsiders (2003) #1

Look at this bitch saying "I don't feel like it" that is the married couple dynamic that is sorely lacking these days. This energy carries through this whole comic run and I was there for it. The emotions are pretty raw in this one. They are both trying to heal from some traumatic stuff and its a mess and a half.

Nightwing (1996) #114

They do a whole lot of beating each other up. Roy seemed to be expecting this during this instance.

Batman Plus Arsenal

They are so funny to me.

Their interactions in the Titans series are so much fun. This run has all the usual titans soap opera bullshit we all know and love.

Action Comics (1938) #618

The whole Dick helping Roy beat up his ex in a literal custody battle is such a sweet story. I don't have the panels but Roy cried over lying to Dick. Imagine Roy telling Lian this story when she's older.

Dick's memories:

I've been working on this part for 6 months. I wrote a lot of it from memory and then went to find the panels and check I was characterising them correctly (and add the attribution).

There are some big moments in Dick and Tim's relationship referenced here, of course. But wherever possible, I tried to choose slightly less well known moments, or an alternate panel from the main one pointed to in that issue.

Some fun facts:

38 footnotes, referencing 34 separate comics (I use two scenes from the same issue for 4 comics: Batman, Nightwing, Robin, and Gotham Knights)

15 different comic runs are referenced (Batman, Detective Comics, Azrael, Birds of Prey, Nightwing, Robin, Red Robin, Batman: Shadow of the Bat, Gotham Knights, New Titans, Showcase '93, Joker: Last Laugh, Identity Crisis, Infinite Crisis, and Blackest Night: Batman)

The years covered by the comics are the following: 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011.

The years missed are the following: 1989 and 1991.

1989: I skipped because I really, really wanted to open with Tim's first actual team up with Dick after A Lonely Place of Dying. Plus, Dick didn't really look and see Tim until after ALPoD. That's why no circus, no baby Tim, no origin story.

1991: Dick and Tim do not interact in any comic labelled 1991. They do appear in a single splash panel together.

I struggled with myself over whether to include 2009 or not, because I wanted moments of brotherhood between Tim and Dick, where they clearly cared for each other, and I didn't want to include any of Battle for the Cowl or the Red Robin fight. There were in the end only three stories that really qualified: The end of Heart of Hush; the 2008 Holiday Special (which has a Feb 2009 cover date); and Blackest Night: Batman. The only issue of Heart of Hush with a 2009 coverdate simply doesn't have any conversation BETWEEN Dick and Tim to use (they're too busy explaining to Tommy how much he screwed up); while I do like the Wonderful Life story, the costume handover was a bit too twee to fit anywhere into the flow of memories plus Owen Mercer's there; and in the end, I used the panel AFTER the panel of Blackest Night. This was a slight cop out in terms of the whole 'avoid the Red Robin fight' aim, but it's the one big moment that shows Dick and Tim were still in sync during that time, and in terms of the scene build it slotted quite nicely into the explosions-building-to-dead-Tim run of memories.

14 different writers created the comics (Marv Wolfman, Alan Grant, Doug Moench, Chuck Dixon, Dennis O'Neil, Devin Grayson, Scott Beatty, Brad Meltzer, Geoff Johns, Adam Beechen, Fabian Nicieza, Peter Tomasi, Christopher Yost, and Scott Snyder)

The most common writer was of course Chuck Dixon, who wrote 10 of the issues; Devin Grayson was in second with 6 issues.

The comic that appears the most often is Nightwing, with 6 issues; Gotham Knights has 5 issues appear.

I had great fun constructing this; I hope while you were reading it many of the scenes also played in your head.

Earth 66 Headcanon Asks

1) Since they’re dating, how common is it for Mar’i to purr like a kitten when Jake is cuddling her?

2) Since they’re twins in your version; which one is technically the older sibling as they came out first, Mar’i or Jake?

before I start, it’s actually Chris not Jake XD *sweet home Alabama plays in background.*

1: very common! Maybe like every 2nd or 3rd cuddle time. Mar’i would cuddle close to Chris, head on shoulder, hand on chest, & maybe legs & feet intertwined, & softly purrs. Chris does gently ruffle her hair like a pet. ;)

2: mar’i is the oldest, being 21 seconds ahead of Jake. (Since mar’i was create 21 years before Jake; 1996 to 2017)

3: hmmmmmmm top of my head I got 3! :D

1-Court of Owls: the idea of them being nightwing’s villains is pretty cool. (So I’m gonna borrow that from you if that’s ok?)

A lot of people are going missing in Bludhaven, & rumors spread around of mysterious black ninjas running around at night kidnapping people. The Grayson-And’r family, after some research, interrogation, & clues, mange to find an underground labyrinth with an army of talons (black ninjas) & “dead” people, plus some people in owl masks.

The main villains are: rich folk/mobsters (people who wears the owl masks) & NightWing’s ancestor: William Cobb (who wears a white/Gray talon suit to differentiate from regulars)

After the family beats up the majority of the villains, using ice equipment (cause talons are weakened by cold temperature) & the tamaerans starbolts (in my universe, you can kill these guys by turning them to ash) the only bad guy left standing is William Cobb. He decides to overdose himself with a chemical compound called: Electrum; which allows talons like himself to gain immortality, regeneration, & the typical superhuman stuff like strength, speed, & durability. When he did that, he grows super big & transforms into a giant bird monster.

He chases the family, knocking down everything causing the labyrinth to crumble down, the family got separated, dick with Kory and Jake with mar’i . Fortunately, Jake & mar’i did mange to reunited with their parents, unfortunately, mar’i got hurt during the battle hurting her legs & Jake had to carry her bridal style; Jake had to slide down a broken pillar while escaping a transform Cobb & there was a raised bump that hit Jake in the crotch, that causes his eyes to cross when he went over it. Jake: “d’oh! I think I peed my pants! (From the “famous” dragon escape scene from Shrek)

Heading close to the exit, the family does one final ice/fire combo that traps Cobb & have rocks to crush him to death & turned into ash by beams of starbolts.

(The next might be a little NSFW/dark, a little warning)

2-Doctor Light: Doctor Light (a major teen titans villain) decides to attack the family with a upgraded suit & kidnaps Kory, Mar’i, & Jake causing Nightwing to go rescue them.

Doc Light traps Kory & mar’i in chains while laying down on a table, arms spread & legs are facing forward. Jake was free but was getting beat up by him. After a small beating, he goes over to Kory & mar’i & starts touching their hair & (you can choose) starts climbing on top of either Kory or mar’i, rubbing his hand across “their” cheek. Jake gets back up & grab & throws doctor light across the room. Doctor light gets back up & tackles & starts choking Jake. With Doc being distracted, Jake uses whatever strength he got left & presses his foot into his crotch & headbutts the doc out cold.

For the final battle later on after rescuing his family: Nightwing is hurt & alone facing Doctor Light who powers up to the max, becomes pure light, pure energy but after digging out a picture that shows Kory, mar’i, & Jake, he gets back up & blocks hard light energy with his electric escrima sticks & blows Doctor light up. There is two different endings:

1- Nightwing dies similar to iron man in endgame (& Jake gets to become NightWing 2/3)

2- he gets knocked out for a few days & gets back up after that XD

3- Red Hood: in my universe, Jason Todd is either: permanently dead or comes back like how he did in the animated movie under the red hood, but he is fully a antihero/villain like his early comic book counterpart.

After the battle with Batman, (note: he didn’t blow up bludhaven yet in this version) he goes after the Grayson-Anders family (for reasons XD) & holds Jake & mar’i hostage. The house does get destroyed during a battle between him & Nightwing, fortunately, everyone is ok but Jason is injured from his fight with Batman & Nightwing & escapes into the unknown; injured.

4: I got 3, 2 original & the 1 from the above question.

1-Red Hood: in the original story: A death in the family, Batman really wanted to kill joker, but Superman talked him out of it. After learning that Batman WAS supposed to kill joker but was talked out of it, Jason decides to go after the Superman family years later after the battle with Batman & Nightwing. (Jason lost his memories & stayed at a church as a priest, he gains back his memories years later when seeing Superman on tv.

Red Hood creates a vigilante group called the red hood gang that has kryptonite weapons & attacks the superfamily (this is around the time the Super-Twins are a thing, probably a few weeks after the Blue Earth story). The SuperFamily (& a little help from Batman, & the Grayson family) managed to stop the red hood & his gang, but he sacrifices himself to take everybody out with a kryptonite bomb, but fails. The only thing that remains is a semi broken red hood helmet/mask. (Hinting that he is still alive)

2- Fire Of Olgun: this small “moment” in the comics has revived Osul-Ra from death on war world by mongul; & in one of the action comics, he was almost taken away from the New Gods (Orion). Annnnnd then it went nowhere XD I say use that to somehow age down Jon Kent (or retcon it saving osul as a potion not a “power up.”)

3- Slices Of SuperLife: mostly just slices of life moments of the superfamily like how we saw during Superman 2016 with the carnival & the road trip.

(this is my opinion, please please if you have other comics, add them to the list)

im actually a big fan of the "newer" stuff, we're talking new 52 onwards, purely bc it works nicely in the times

new 52 starts strong with a storyline that's all about dick's past, and given it ocvurred after a hard reset, it's easy to get into

so:

nightwing 2011 (30 issues + 1 annual)

grayson (20 issues + 3 annuals + futures end, a weird special that i would honestly skip)

nightwing 2016 (109 issues and counting + 5 annuals + nightwing rebirth that comes before the run)

there's also the 2? previous nightwing runs:

nightwing 1995 (five issue limited run + alfred's return #1 special that comes first)

nightwing 1996 (153 issues + issue 1/2 + issue 1,000,000 + a whole host of specials)

2? because does nightwing 1995 actually count as a proper run???

you might also hear them referred to by volumes, 1995 is vol 1, 1996 is vol 2, 2011 is vol 3 or new-52, 2016 is vol 4 or rebirth

grayson is a bit weird but my absolute favourite dick ever. it's a spy thriller and doesn't have a lot of batfam/titans/yj characters in it BUT it does have a lot of dick being awesome. there's also an 'event' that takes place during grayson called robin war, very fun and a good show of dick's skills and manipulation.

to top it off, robin year one is always quoted as essential reading so i'd check it out too (before anyone shouts nightwing year one, it's issues 101-106 of vol 2)

there's also a lot of batman that features dick, he has a nice feature in both hush and under the (red) hood but nothing major, both giving us some nice interaction with bruce. both are also just incredible and deserving of being on the list of iconic batman

batman and robin 2009 is a lot of fun bc it features dick as batman, and damian wayne as his robin. this is a dynamic that i just love and is where episode 113 os WFA just hits hard (and why damian leans on dick so much, he is dick's robin)

oooooo and a lonely place of dying (1989) is brilliant. it's the introduction of tim drake and features dick. it's great, you should read it. it comes after a death in the family which is also just amazing. no dick, just jason, but fun (dick was in space at the time with the titans, tamaran i think)

i do just want to give a warning for nightwing 2016, it gets weird from issue 50 onwards. there's a period where the comics shift massively (#50-77 no spoilers) and then the current run by tom taylor is fine but misses a chunk of his character. i still like it but it's not the best thing for his character

OMG i forgot about titans runs lmao. ngl, i haven't read that much titans so i will leave that to one side so any experts can accurately recommend. i will say that i have enjoyed the very recent worlds finest: teen titans (2023) limited run a lot, back in the robin days, deals with dick and bruce's relationship and his relationships with the team. (also wally is there and i love wally)

TL;DR

start with nightwing 2011 and work forwards moving to grayson and then to nightwing 2016. then go back and read the older stuff

i have absolutely missed a lot BUT this is kind of my "short n sweet" run down, iconic dick grayson is like, most of dick grayson, so it's hard. the common advice (and what i did) was new 52, grayson, rebirth

tbh this is like a basics list, the required reading if you will, not that you need to read any of it but if you do want to, this is a good starting point. a lot of the runs have these crossovers, like robin war and death of the family (not the jason one, this is a weird vol 3 thing), so you get to read other comics too for those issues)

also sorry for the just random other non-nightwing comics, i got excited

i definitely forgot some stuff, again i'm sorry, but go vibe with dick and have a good time and also your fic?? if you'd be willing to share??? i'm always looking for new stuff to read (do not feel pressured into sharing it if you don't want to tho)

i hope you enjoy your nightwing experience, it can seem overwhelming but take it slow, comics aren't that long, and just remember that even yj and WFA are better than nothing (or the live action titans /hj)

Aha! You activated my trap card <-(completely forgot how public they are with their nightwing obsession) (ps: i also talked nightwing recs here too <3 i simply love to talk about my baby boy)

My "area of expertise" is mainly Nightwing 1996, so that's where most of my recs come from. There was also Nightwing 1995, which was more of a test run for 96. I think it had 4 issues total? It's not bad, just not noteworthy either. I've been working on a big spreadsheet of info for 96, including trigger warnings, but im only like. 15 issues in. hashtag pain and suffering. Issue #1 already has a woman being threatened, I have it down as "attempted rape" in my list, and that kind of sets the tone for what you need to be able to handle to read everything in that series.

The biggest downside is that it's all pre Damian :( son boy i miss u and i wish u were in better comics. Tim is funny tho. The first arc in 96 is great scene setting, and Tim shows up in #6 to be a lil stinker :3. We establish Dick's goals, motivations, etc, as well as what the state of Blüdhaven is and who our main baddies are.

It's all a bit heartbreaking in retrospect. Dick fails. He wants to be more independent and remove himself from Bruce's shadow, Blockbuster is established as the big bad for him to bring to justice, and he wants to make things at least a little better for the people of Blüdhaven.

He ends up dragged back to Bruce by an invisible leash, he technically beats his main villain but only in the absolute worst way after losing everything (and continues to lose more after, losing things he didn't know he had), and Blüdhaven is destroyed.

Dick loses. It's a bad end. A tragedy even. And yet, because of the nature of comics like DC, his story continues. It continues in crossovers and fan service and whatever else might sell. His most personally meaningful story ended prematurely for fucking War Games. sorry I know I just complained about this but cmon.

There were some good storylines after that! But I'm still bothered by the fact that the Tarantula arc was cut off after like, 2 issues. Road to Nowhere (#94-95) really did go nowhere. But the concept was there and it had the potential to be a decent story about an abusive relationship.

Mobbed Up (#108-111), Renegade (#112-117), and Brothers in Blood (#118-122) are some of my favorite arcs, all post Blockbuster. But after those I kind of lost interest. Annual #2 also came out sometime after all those, and I can't stress enough that it is absolutely not worth reading. It was written an illustrated by men, reduces Babs and Kori to nothing more than romantic partners, and completely misrepresents older stories. They literally retell older Dick/Babs moments, but without anything that could make their relationship at all complex or questionable to the consumer. Dick saw her as a sister, but rather than use that as a sign of closeness and respect they cut out all reference to that entirely because god forbid relationships have any nuance nowadays. Annual #1 was alright. I think it came out in the first or second year of the 96 run, and it's a nice self contained murder mystery one shot that showcases Dick's workaholic habits, his want for a family, and his tendency to try and change himself to makes others happy. He also comes off as very accidentally arospec. There's a moment where he tries to get a woman to stay with him by saying things like "but I could learn to love you" and if that wasn't me everyday throughout my middle to high school years than I don't know what is.

Outside of 96, I wanna point out The Search for Ray Palmer: Red Rain. Which may not be a Nightwing story but is absolutely a Bruce & Dick story (with vampires!) I haven't actually read much of the original Red Rain because. Dick's not really in that one. The Ray Palmer spin off however has Dick hunting down his parents' killer: one vampire king, Bruce Wayne. If you find those posts about Dick initially being a vengeance hungry 8 year old interesting than this is about as close as actual comics get. In the main timeline, yeah, Dick wants revenge, but because he's 8 and really just going through it rather than being genuinely bloodthirsty he's very easily talked out of it. In the Red Rain universe there is no comfort. He's alone, and grief consumes him. Bruce killed his parents for that very purpose, because he wanted Dick to be consumed by grief and hopelessness like him. Getting Dick to be like him and getting Dick to be obsessed with him was kind of his entire goal from the moment he laid eyes on him. Bruce's main presence up until the end where he shows up is shown largely through Dick's hunt, through Dick's obsession. Bruce wanted them to be inseparable and he very much succeeded in the end. By the time Jason and crew cross paths with them it's already too late. Everything is as Bruce wanted it to be. So a yandere vampire brudick au, basically.

There's also Outsiders 2003, which I keep meaning to read but haven't quite gotten to. Dick leads another team, but Donna just died so he's even meaner and cagier than he usually is.

gah. i really wanna finish that nightwing spreadsheet. i'll probably post it once i finish the 1996 section, or at least get it caught up to where it stops before crossing over with war games.

i've made a lot of these but theyre just things that i eventually wanna read, the dick grayson one is really the only one with anything in it rn <-(one track mind. and that track is called blorbo)

That's why I said everything about that tweet was incorrect. Babs was Bruce's love interest for a good while until Batman editorial took Nightwing, broke up the Titans, de-aged Babs, and forced DB to be together.

Then there's them not being canon in comics since 1993 which is also incorrect.

Kingdom Come run was in 1996. Dick and Kory were married and had a daughter.

Then they had Dick Kory Babs OOC love triangle BS through the 90s and 2000's.

Titans Convergence comic run was in 2015. Dick and Kory were married there.

Nightwing: The New Order was in 2017. Dick and Kory were married and had a son there.

Then they just did yet another love triangle with Babsin Titans Academy in 2021. (How tf did he miss that one?)

At least be accurate if you're gonna talk shit

I have my thoughts on that. so - assuming we aready have some established or semi-established sladick here - I think it wouldn't be /that/ bad if slade saw everything dick was up to back then; risking his life, caring less about his health and body, jumping in front of guns and still playing hero. don't get me wrong - slade would be /furious/ probably, not only at dick (probably the least at dick, he knows how his little bird gets sometimes, how dark it gets in his poor little head) but also at bruce and bats?? and bludhaven?? at every single person who ever saw a kid in panties playing hero and thought it can't be that bad and every single on of them who also called themselves "heroes"?? at his friends because where the fuck are they?? maybe even at himself?? but no, it wouldn't be that bad; slade would know how to deal with it and he wouldn't be against trampling bat's bullshit under his shoe. he would find a way and words to make dick think about it at least. he can fight him if he wants it - he can even beat him to pulp if that's what he wishes for! slade's good with hands and with words and at the end of the day - he's good for his little bird who can cry and cry and cry in his arms until he's to exhausted to do anything else.

he's not good with the aftermath tho, he never was.

slade never took it well when he missed something, when time wasn't on his side. he hated being late and that's where his emotions overtook.

so all in all, I think slade would be absolutely at lost if he was ever the one to find dick in his own little apartment - or /their/ own less little (thank you, slade) apartemt - unresponsive on the floor with empty box that he knows should contain pills or in their bathtub, water already cold and red--

he wasn't too late, not this time, but something inside him...feels like he was. the thought alone that dick - his beautiful, bright, strong little bird, his ray of fucking sunshine in his god forsaken life - could go,,,like that. that this /kid/ always fighting nails and teeth could simply fade away, day by day - because now he sees it, it was days, weeks, months, dick was fading away on his eyes and he didn't want to notice, it never ever crossed his mind - day by day less of him until there's nothing more. and slade has no fucking idea how to deal with it anymore. he could fight him so easily if there was any fight left in him. now he feels like something in him is fading as well.

31DOD Day 6

The only way to go here is escrima sticks! Specifically, the way Dick Grayson throws them around. Nothing is cooler than making a bad ass bank shot and then breaking someone's jaw.

Let's look at some escrima sticks greatest hits:

Batman (2016) #54

My man has arms strong enough to make this thing bounce this many times and the applied geometry skills to make a bank shot like this possible.

2. Nightwing (2016) #48

Another awesome thing about the escrima sticks is that they make for some pretty cool page layouts. It's always fun when the when objects move between panels.

3. Nightwing (1996) #103

There has also been a number of instances of him using them to fend off animals as large as this dude! I love Dick Grayson working with large animals. One thing I would love to see is some equestrian gymnastics (but that may be because I had a weird phase where I was researching that).

4. Eskrima/Kali from the Human Weapons Docuseries

The whole episode used to be on youtube and I watched it many many years ago. Learning about the basic mechanics and culture was interesting! Not a perfect episode, but a good introduction. There are some longer movies out there as well that delve more into the history which is also very cool.

Any other cool bank shots I'm missing? There was definitely some I couldn't track down during Dick's emo phase where he ran off to the circus between being robin and nightwing. I think it was in the one of the ntt issues?

Gotta say, I don't love the jump line coming out of the stick. I don't see having that rope between the fingers being comfortable or safe or easy to balance. It wouldn't be so bad if the wasn't so many gadgets packed into the sticks. They do everything! and im not really here for it. They should be deadly bludgeoning weapons and all that fine machinery on the insides should not be used for bludgeoning. I miss the gauntlet secret pockets.

hi! i saw a few of ur posts n it looks like u know a bunch abt the canon right? (of batman comics sorry for the confusion). was wondering if ud be able to help me with something.

im trying to write a fic for a friend, as a surprise, abt dick being in a time loop the day before the shit's hitting the fan with tarantula and blockbuster. but i didnt read the comics from that time, just a fuck ton of fanfics abt it, and i know she did, and i want to get my facts as accurate as possible.

what can u tell me abt that time? like, i know babs and dick broke up, but how and why exactly? or, idk, i cant think of exact questions rn, but if u r willing to run down the timeline of that time period with me (like even going way far back, like from the moment blockbuster started to act and/or the moment tarantula showd up) id be so grateful. or even if you could tell me which issues to read, even that would be super helpful! (i know 93 is where everything happens for realz but i dont knwo how far back i should go. tried starting from 88 but felt like im missing a lot of things)

Okay, Nightwing (1996) is a rollercoaster of emotions and trauma. So I will summarize it the best I can and talk about some important stuff that happened to him.

Dick goes to Bludhaven to find a purpose and be someone more than a sidekick. But it's tough since Bludhaven is pretty shitty. And through out his comic, we see him deal with it while trying to battle his own demons.

Blockbuster shows up pretty early in this run. He makes an official appearance in #7. He is basically a mob boss and wants the title of Prince of Bludhaven, which was given to Dick. They fight and we find out some things about Blockbuster.

He is unnaturaly large and has a genius level IQ. So it's clear from the start that he will be a tough opponent. Doubled with his super strength, Dick has a hard time beating him. But in the end Blockbuster takes him into a choke hold and we see Dick pass out.

After that, he wakes up and goes after him. But Blockbuster is already gone.

At #9 Dick busts an operation with two-face in it. But eventually gets gassed with Scarecrows fear gas.

This was very hard to read. Because for a whole issue we experience his nightmares alongside him. With Donna, Batman, Tim, Barbara, His parents, Jason Todd and so on.

He gets better of course but he still ocassionally has nightmares.

At #12 Batman makes an appearance, and they go after Blockbuster together. But Dick has a hard time due to feeling insecure about being Batman's sidekick. More specifically with Batman by his side, he feels more like a sidekick than his own hero. So Dick tries to prove to both himself and Bruce that he is capable.

They find Blockbuster and Dick goes after him while Batman deals with his lackeys. Dick uses the small space as his advantage eventually beats him. This however is not the end. We will keep seeing him for a long while.

During this we see a lot of villains make an appearance like Deathstroke, Lady Shiva, Man Bat KGBeast and so on. He battles them and proves once again that he is worthy of being his own hero.

During the entire comic, Barbara is present. She is a constant reassurence to him and at the beginning they have a very sweet relationship.

Tim Drake also makes appearance from time to time. We see them get along splendidly, ocassionally teaming up to fight crime and go train surfing.

Through the end of #31, we see him go to Police Academy and train.

After that Blockbuster, again, makes another appearance. He is trying to track Oracle, because she keeps ruining his operations. This gets very dangerous for Babs, and we even see her write a will incase she dies.

During this, Blockbuster kidnappes Dick and has his lackeys inject some kind of tranq into him. Which makes it harder to escape.

In the end, he gets saved by Cisco Blane.

Blockbuster, however has a secret. He is very sick. And he needs a transplant. So he again backs out of the spotlight.

Dick continues to protect Bludhaven with all he has. Sometimes, with help. For a while everything is fine.

But then comes #75, which brings Tarantula with it. In her first appearance, she tries to be a vigilante like Nightwing. And we can clearly see her attraction towards him.

During these times, Babs and Dick's relationship is a bit rocky. They don't yell or fight, but we can see that a case of miscommunication is present. This increases with Catalina's (Tarantula) appearance.

After fighting together with Tarantula, Dick tries to make some boundries and rules. The most prominent one being No Killing. Tarantula doesn't like that, and an argument breaks out. In the end, Catalina tells him that they are enemies now.

Babs, dealing with the stress that is Catalina, does not like that Dick is a cop. She is worried about him and does't want him to be in the line of fire 24/7.

Deathstroke comes along and everything turns to being more shitty. Dick and Babs's relationship is getting worst and Dick breaks some police rules to deal with everything. In the end his captain, Amy, fires Dick.

Babs is happy and Dick is sad. Because he really luked being a cop. But the situation with Tarantula gets worst and worst. Eventually Blockbuster kidnappes Catalina and asks her to destroy Nightwing.

Babs, sick of Catalina and Dick's weird relationship, expresses that she wants to end the relationship. Which happens after Dick makes a joke about Joker and his own injury.

They haven't really broke up yet, because next issue we see them go out on a date. Which Catalina ruins by showing up and trying to fight them. She kisses Dick on the lips before disappearing. Dick and Babs continue their date but through the end they have an argument and they oficially break up.

Then it is revealed that, this was Tarantula's plan all along. When Blockbuster told her to desteoy Nightwing, she could have killed his girlfriend. But that would cause Babs to stay in Dick's mind forever and would only make him angry. So she decides to break them up. And take Dick for herself.

After their break up, they still talk but not as close as before. And they eventually face off Blockbuster once and for all.

Blockbuster hates Dick for letting his mother die. Dick however does not take that bullshit of an excuse as a reason for all those horrible things he has done.

Later on, Dick visits a friend of his called Maxine. But Blockbuster follows him to her place and shoots her in the head.

Dick, furious, attacks Blockbuster while starting to hyperventilate. Dick is almost in a daze and does not pull his punches. He beats Blockbuster in the end but Tarantula comes out and points a gun at Blockbuster. She shots him dead.

This causes Dick to have a panic attack and he manages to pull himself on a rooftop. Catalina follows him and ends up raping him while he begs her to not touch him.

After this, however, they get into some kind of relationship. They continue going on patrols together, but the relationship does not work out. They end up fighting and Catalina shoots him on the shoulder. Despite his injuries, Dick takes her down.

This comic is very long (over 100 issues) and it wasn't really possible for me to go into more in depth details about it. So there are probably things that I've missed, or may have mixed up. If so please correct me. I hope this is helpful. And good luck on your fic!
