Crocodile facts I used came from: Royal Society Publishing and Wildlife Sydney AU (I kept getting confused on the crocodile embryo fact and the Royal Society Publishing ended up being the correct one in regards to that fact)

"Well, actually, it's your turn to pick the date spot this time." Miguel hums as he gently blows on his oatmeal before taking a spoonful.
"Goddamn it...I'm so bad at choosing." You drum your nails against your coffee mug, the motion generating small tinkles of sound against the white porcelain.
 
Miguel smirks, "Thought since I'm a Libra, I'm the one who's supposed to be indecisive?" 
"Doth mine ears decieve me?!" You clasp your hand to your chest, making a gasp of over exaggerated astonishment. "Astrology's #1 hater is reciting accurate lore of his own sign back to me?!" 
Miguel shakes his head, blowing air out of his nose in amusement. "Nah, I'm still the number one hater." He winks. "Just proving to you that when you talk, I do listen. Even if I'm bad at responding." 
"Bah." You wave your hand at him and sip your coffee, shifting your thoughts to where you'd like to go on your date with him this time. Truth is, Nueva York was huge. You hadn't been to all the restaurants and bars and every single spot just yet. You just had a few favorites that you kept on rotation. 
Miguel, a man of routine and structure, didn't mind that one bit. Actually, there was a place you did really want to go to, you just hope he'll be okay with it since you were just there together for Valentine's. 
"Perhaps..."
"Mhmm?" Miguel turns the page of his newspaper, doing his best to be responsive to you while getting caught up on yesterday's news. 
"Don't be mad at me..." 
"Mad at you?" Miguel's eyes flicker from the newsprint to yours. Scarlet spotlights on you. 
"The aquarium." You say finally, your lips pull into a cheeky smile to indicate that you're well aware of your redundant choice but you don't care because you're dying to go anyway. 
The corner of Miguel's mouth tugs a little into a half smile. "That's the spot, huh? You think I was going to be mad at you for choosing the aquarium again?" 
You shrug. "Well, I do drag us there a lot. But it's so fun! I love seeing the fish and everything. You know me. I can't get enough of that stuff." 
Miguel gives you a warm smile. "Well, the aquarium it is then. And believe me, that's farrr from one of my least favorite places we go. It's actually one of my favorites, too." 
You echo his warmth, mixing it with some playfulness in your tone, "Oh yeah, I should've known, you love that under the sea, nerdy stuff too, huh?" 
Miguel chuckles. "Guilty." He stands up, picking up his empty bowl. "Vamos, los peces esperan." (Let's go, the fish are waiting)

You can't help but smile giddily as you walk around the vast aquarium. It's dimly lit, and not very busy at this time, to both yours and Miguel's relief. The fact it was a Wednesday likely helped, since the rare occasion when Miguel's days off coincided with yours were quite sporadic and random. 
First, you started with the reptiles. As you walked in the more brightly lit section, you peeled off your hoodie and tied it around your waist as the humidity of the exhibit started to get to you. Moisture hung in the air and the spattering sounds of water hitting rocks from the waterfall that stood tall in the middle of the exhibit created the illusion you were somewhere tropical, a welcome respite away from the March wind chill of Nueva York. 
Frog croaks, monkey shrieks, and clicking and chattering of birds rustle in the exhibit, creating the ambiance of a rainforest. You look up at the large bird habitat in front of you, shielded by thin netting, groups of colorful birds hanging out in small clusters, rotating between perching and flying from one resting spot to another. A large smile breaks out on your face when your eyes land on a toucan perched on a twig garland hanging from the ceiling, busy cleaning his feathers. 
"Babe look..." You say in a hushed voice. Miguel follows your gaze and his face breaks out into a smile as well, admiring the cute little bird as he ruffled and stroked his black feathers and puffed up his white bosom with pride. 
Miguel nudges your side playfully with his hip. "He takes a long time to get ready, kind of like someone I know..." 
You try to nudge him pitifully back in response, but Miguel stays anchored in place with a chuckle. 
You move on to look at the geckos, lizards, snakes, and caimans as well. A baby crocodile sits with his belly dipped in a shallow pool of water, legs splayed out and mouth wide open, basking in the warmth emitted from the heat lamp at the top of his tank. 
"He's SOOOO cute!" You gush, leaning your head just a little closer to the glass. Miguel looks away from the yellow poison dart frog exhibit and follows your squealing noises, putting his hands in his pockets as he stands next to you with a smirk. 
"Not sure if cute is how I'd describe him..." Miguel tilts his head at the mini croc, its green eyes still unmoving. "He'll grow up to be an apex predator like his parents." 
"Look at you, Mr. Wildlife." You look up at him, impressed. "What else do I not know about Kenny here?" 
"Kenny?" 
"That's his name, babe. It says so on the sign." 
"Oh." Miguel laughs. "Well... crocodiles have three eyelids." 
"Oh, you told me that one already, baby. What else?"
Miguel smiles and lists some more facts for you. You love it when he's like this. He was like a sponge, always absorbing knowledge that other people might have found boring or useless. He'd gladly tell you about it too, and he never ever made you feel silly or dumb for not knowing something. 
"The sex of embryos in crocodiles is actually determined by the temperature at the time of incubation. So, Kenny here was probably incubated at a higher temperature which is more associated with producing males, whereas cooler temperatures are associated with producing females." Miguel points.
You click your tongue in admiration. "I learn something new every day. Let's hear one more." 
Miguel purses his lips in thought for a moment, then says, "See those lumps and bumps on his back? Those are actually called, ‘scutes’. They actually enable them to be more stealthy in the water. They stop it from rippling." 
Your eyebrows raise, your eyes still on Kenny and then they move to the tank beside him with the bigger crocs. "Whoa..." you nod. "Well, that proves my point earlier." 
Miguel raises an eyebrow. 
"Crocs have scutes. So they are s'cute!" You cross your arms triumphantly and head towards the ocean part of the aquarium. 
Miguel thinks in his head that you probably wouldn't use that word for long if you knew how large crocodiles killed and ate their prey, but he doesn't argue. He smiles to himself and gives a curt nod in farewell to Kenny before he leaves to catch up to you.

Your eyes get big as you enter the room with jellyfish tanks. Soft blue and pink globs glide effortlessly in the water, sinking down slowly before using their tentacles to propel upwards, bobbing hypnotically in dizzying movements. 
You and Miguel keep stealing glances at each other when the other isn't looking. You turn to look at him once more, the bioluminescence from the jellyfish mixed with the blacklights of the aquarium cast a soft glow on his features, the crimson in his eyes making him look just as ethereal as the beauty of the sea you're both gazing at. His full lips jut outwards subtly as he purses them in thought, his cheekbones sharp, framing that divine, sculpted face of his. 
He looks at you, catching you staring at him this time. You take his hand, wrapping your other hand around his forearm to pull him closer to you. His head turns briefly for a moment, making sure you two are the only ones in the room before he leans down and gives you a soft kiss, that jittery feeling in your stomach when one of his hands cups the side of your throat, pressing you a little harder against his lips. Before you pull away, you add a lingering bite to his bottom lip, making him blush. 
"Pórtate bien...." (Behave yourself) He murmurs, running his tongue along the slight puffiness on his bottom lip your teeth left behind, trying to calm the small flame you lit inside him. 
Your mouth curls into a grin at the mini rise you got out of him, and you walk into a new area, marvelling at the saffron-colored coral and dainty seahorses. 
Miguel moves to the other side of the exhibit where the largest tank resides with an assortment of fish swimming in and out of a large, fake shipwreck, but stops in his tracks when he sees the clownfish and regal tangs. A twinge of sadness pulls at his heart.
 After watching the seahorse disappear behind a seaweed stalk, you turn and notice where Miguel is standing and your eyebrows knit in worry as you take long strides to come stand by his side, squeezing his hand. 
He exhales at your touch and squeezes back in response, not needing to say anything because you can read him better than anyone. Sometimes this part could be rather hard for him. Clownfish and Regal Tangs were the species of Nemo and Dory. 
Finding Nemo was Gabi's favorite movie.
You both watch the colorful fish in peaceful silence, darting in and out behind rocks, speeding up and slowing down, jolting and occasionally bumping into one another as they weave and glide through their underwater habitat around the large sunken ship.
Eventually, you pull Miguel gently by the hand leading him to one of the empty benches behind you. You sit and watch the fish together some more, enjoying the serenity of the buzzing undersea ecosystem before you, smiling when you see the comically large sea turtle next to all of his smaller fishy cohorts, dodging them and spinning like a rotisserie above your heads like it was second nature for him. 
After a few more minutes, you turn to Miguel, "Well, last up is the shark exhibit." You try and brighten the mood a little, "That one's your favorite. You ready?" 
Miguel turns and looks down at you, his arm still resting on the top of the bench behind you. His hand comes to give your shoulder a squeeze. "You sure? This one's your favorite. We can take our time." 
You try to shake your head and play it off, "No, really I've seen it a hundred times, plus I think there's a new tank with stingrays or something..." 
Miguel knows when you're trying to be too nice, a not uncommon behavior of yours. "We have all afternoon, really. I want to make sure you're having fun." He reassures you. 
Your eyes melt as you sit back in your seat, indulging in staring at the fish for just a while longer like you wanted. Once you're satisfied, you let him know with a nod of your head and a squeeze of his hand and you two make your way to the escalators that run to the lower level, taking you to the shark exhibit. 
As you do, you can't help but think about the times when you invited your friends and they practically rushed you through the whole experience, asking if there was anything new you could look at instead or passing up on going to the aquarium altogether, saying they've seen it all. 
Miguel was one of the only people in your life who didn't make you feel bad for revisiting places you loved because it made you happy to re-experience it all over again. Hell, he was eager to and even expected an invite each time you did.

You press your lips together in anticipation and your eyes go wide as if you're looking at it for the first time as you enter the large, underwater tunnel, dozens of sharks swimming in every direction, the shimmery reflection of the water and aqua light of the exhibit immersing you into a whole new world. It takes your breath away and you slow down, pausing in one spot right in the middle of the tunnel, losing yourself in the oceanic beauty above your head. It's one of those no camera moments, a time that requires silence, appreciation, and the person you love right next to you. 
Miguel's watching you with sheer admiration, slightly envious even that something else could make you that speechless with adoration. He wants to make you feel that way all the time. It's memories like these with you that he's so glad he lowered the gates of his heart all that time ago. Never guessing when you crossed his path, it would lead to moments as blissful as these. The best part of the whole thing is that they won't end anytime soon. As long as you'd let him, he'd continue calling you all his. Could now be the time to make it permanent? Perhaps. No, you deserved something more planned out, something really special. He hadn't even gotten you that ring that you liked so much, sending not so subtle hints by texting him the link to it every so often while he was at work. 
When he feels it's a good time, he approaches you from behind, touching the corner of your elbow, curious to know what's been on your mind. "¿En que piensas, mi alma?" (What are you thinking, my soul?)
You hum and turn around, following that low, mesmerizing voice of his, and you look up at him, the face of your lover looking down at you, warmth dominating his countenance that pulls you right in. 
"Just thinking about how much I love coming here with you. You never make me feel bad for wanting to just take my time and see everything, you know? Even if it's my quadrillionth time seeing it. I just love the beach and the ocean, you know? It's like a brand new experience every time." 
Miguel smiles down at you, then his eyes briefly wander, the group in front of you starts moving on so you two are left alone once again. He takes a deep breath and turns you back around so you're looking at the sea life once again, keeping his hands on your arms as he gives them a little love squeeze. "Kind of like how I see you, hmm?" 
You chuckle, leaning backwards into him. His cologne enveloping you in that embrace that made your heart flutter and your knees grow weak every time. "What do you mean, Mig?" 
"Con ojos nuevos cada vez." (With new eyes every time) 
You close your eyes with your head against his chest and his arms wrapped around you for several moments. You bring your own hands up to his, sliding your fingers underneath his jacket sleeves in search of the warm skin of his forearms to which he softly exhales into your hair at the sensation. 
You murmur to him, "Can we get smoothies on the way home?" 
"Hmmm, you don't like my green smoothie recipe?"  Miguel asks with a teasing grin. 
"It had.. too much kale for my liking." 
"Ouch." 
"Sorry, baby." 
"Ha, ha...well, I suppose we could. In that case we might as well get lunch. You need real food too, not just a smoothie. You're ready to go already?" 
"Just a little longer?" 
"Of course, sweetheart." 
You smile and lean back into him once more, letting your bodies lean against each other in familiar, loving solitude as the sharks swim around you in the tunnel of the aquarium, white flashes of light shimmering against the glass every so often that the water hits the sunlight that's slowly begun to peek out from the afternoon skies above.

"Where... Am I?"
Your question was met with silence as you looked around the room at the various surprised figures. Only moments ago you had been standing up at the Heavenly gates with who you assumed to be St. Peter searching for your name. He had found it but when the gates opened, a man wearing a mask with devil horns stopped the two of you. The man didn't say much before he smiled and said you belonged in Heaven but had work to do in Hell. After that there was a flash of bright light before you found yourself where you currently stood.
Outside the sky was red and those standing before you were dressed rather differently from the angelic being you spoke to prior. The colors of the room almost seemed to be steeped in sepia coloration like an old film movie. Those around the long rectangular table seemed surprised and confused by your presence just as you were confused by theirs.
"Great, who's this then? Some cheeky bitch intruding in an overlord meeting."
One of the people sitting at the table stood, their features making them look like some kind of cross between an alligator and a chicken. Their three eyes were focused on you and seemed to be smouldering in their sockets as they approached. You didn't know how to respond as the being loomed over you, hand drawn back as if they intended to slap you.
What felt like seconds later you were suddenly on the other side of the room, warm sticky red blood covered your arms and chest while it dripped from your hands. The sudden change startled you as you tried to wipe away the blood with very little success, becoming panicked and almost frantic. Not only were you confused and lost, you were soaked in blood and somewhere completely new to you.
It was during your panicked attempt at wiping away the blood on you that a slender spider-like hand rest on your shoulder. The weight of the hand drew your attention to the person attached to that hand.
They were an unusual looking being with neon green-yellow eyes set in a dark gray face. Their body was obscured by a long cloak that covered them and came up in a collar that held the design of spider webs. A spider sat located above their collarbone as if it were a bowtie that held the cloak closed on the figure.
"Calm thyself, child. One ought not panic so easily, especially when one finds thyself in Hell. Breathe a moment, for the danger has passed."
Their voice was a soothing rumble that held a faint echo to it, their relaxed demeanor calming you considerably despite your uncertain surroundings. When they saw you had followed their instructions and took a deep breath, a rather patient smile played across their lips.
"Worry not, child. No harm shall befall thee here."
You almost returned the smile before a voice interjected, startling you slightly.
"They won't be harmed, sure, but what about us? They just ate one of the other overlords!"
"Calm thyself, Carmilla. Approach not with violence but an open hand and there will be no trouble. It seems Heaven has set a Sin Eater in our midst once more. A lost lamb ought not stray from thine flock, lest they be consumed by the wolves that doth circle amongst the sheep."
The humanoid circled you slightly, keenly observing you as you watched with unguarded curiosity. You had never seen someone like them before, but despite their appearance you felt calm and almost protected by the unusual being. It was when they stopped and gained an almost pleased smile that you felt the hair on the back of your neck standing ever so slightly.
"Prithee, speak thy name, Child, that I may address thee proper."
"(Y/n) (L/n). What's your name?"
"Zestial. Though many oft remark me to be the oldest overlord in Hell. Tell me, (Y/n), wouldst thou wish to be cast into the populace of Hell, or wouldst thou prefer to be guided through by a more experienced hand?"
"I... Wait, we're in.. Hell? Then that means I'm..."
"Verily, young (Y/n). Life has departed thee and left thee to walk amongst the fallen. As thou may suspect, the populace of Hell will not react kindly to thy presence. Sin Eaters are monsters in Hell and oft are hunted the rare times their presence becomes known. But no more of that, there is still the question at hand. What is thy answer?"
"I... I just want to know what's going on. I don't want to be hunted for something I didn't even choose. Will you help me?"
"Yes, dear confused (y/n). It is within mine own ability to guide and protect thee from the many untrusting eyes in Hell."
It was then the feminine one Zestial addressed as Carmilla spoke up, her brows raised and tone incredulous. Those sitting at the table seemed surprised as well with the current way the conversation was headed. None other than Carmilla seemed brave enough to speak out their concerns on the matter.
"Zestial, I know you are one to keep your plans to yourself, but are you really going to make a deal with that thing?"
"Carmilla, though thy intent is to protect and perhaps defend from the unknown, never forget that none had guessed mine own intentions at first glance. This is to be a deal struck between the Sin Eater and I, it needs no outside interjection."
"I- understood, Zestial."
The spider being turned back to you, their enigmatic smile still present on their face as they spoke in that same even tone.
"Now, (y/n), what say thee? It must be known I shan't do this without proper reparations. Thine soul shall become mine for the taking, but there shall be none who can try to touch thee without repercussions. More importantly, Hell need not control thy heart with fear as I shall walk by thee and shelter thee from the hostile intent of others. Does that sound amenable?"

A contract appeared out of what seemed to be nothing, floating before you. Next to it was a pink and green-yellow feather much like the one that adorned Zestial's hat. With nothing to lose you grabbed the feather quill and signed your name on the dotted line, agreeing to the mysterious being's offer. The second you finished writing your name, a certain weight seemed to now be placed on your shoulders as if the air around you had changed.
"Verily, a wise choice, dear (y/n). Wise indeed."

Crowley’s Opening Prologue Speech Comparisons: Manga vs Game

Now that I got my hands on the official English translation of the first volume of the Heartslabyul manga, I have collected yet another edition of Crowley’s opening speech haha!
The official translation is on the left (apologies for the poor photo quality), and the popular fan translation is on the right. I included the fan translation because many have us have relied on the wonderful work of the manga translators, so I thought it would be nice to compare the two ٩( 'ω' )و
The official manga translation reads “Ah…my cherished benefactor. Wicked bloom that doth nobly enthrall…thou art the fairest one of all. Magic mirror, on the wall. Who is the…”
The fan translation reads “Ah, my loveliest highness…Dignified in all your nobility, a most wicked flower. You are truly the fairest of them all. Mirror, mirror, on the wall, reveal this to me. Of this world, who is…”

I put the Japanese text and the official English translation of the in-game lines. The English game translation reads “Ah, my dear esteemed benefactor…My proud, beautiful flower of evil. You are truly the fairest one of all. O magic mirror, thy wisdom I entreat…reveal unto me the visage I seek…”
Since I cannot read Japanese, nor have I been able to find what the Japanese version of the manga says, I cannot attest to the “accuracy” of these lines, or if there’s a flexibility to how Crowley’s lines can be translated. Perhaps the manga adjusted the end of Crowley’s speech to be slightly shorter to save on space? (The Twisted Wonderland novel does not have this speech by the way, at least to my knowledge)
The official manga translation seems to value the rhythm of the words (enthrall, all, wall), and having Crowley speak in an archaic form, with “doth” and “thou art.”

I’d like to add that “enthrall” refers to charm or being spellbound attention-wise. But the archaic version of the word also refers to being bound in slavery. Since the manga translates Crowley with archaic terms, I thought this would be interesting to point out! Perhaps he is “enslaved” by his benefactors beauty, or perhaps in a more literal sense?
Both the EN game and manga seem to keep the identity of the person Crowley is speaking to gender neutral, using “benefactor.”

Crowley’s relationship with his benefactor very very subtly shifts between the game and the manga, but it’s essentially the same thing with different language used. The game calls them his “dear esteemed benefactor,” as in respect or admire. But the manga uses “cherished benefactor,” as if this is someone that Crowley loves dearly and holds them close to his heart. The game does say “dear,” but it somehow feels a little more direct in the manga haha because he’s not just referring to his respect/admiration, but maybe it’s just me. But the game also implies this, with him saying “MY proud, beautiful flower of evil.”
I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts about this! If any of y’all can read Japanese and can compare this to the original game text, I would be honored to know about this as well! \(//∇//)\ Does anyone have a preferred translation either? I really like the game translation, but the official manga with the archaic speech is personally growing on me!

There is something so interesting to me about the whole "Devil Fruits are manifestations of people's desires" concept... Mainly because, when you think about it, a lot of characters do end up having Devil Fruits that like, suit them, you know?
Althought people do tend speculate about it, we can't really say for sure that a "Devil Fruit chooses its user", like it's not canon yet. But if there was some funny thing of FATE that somehow leads specific people to certain powers that they, subconciously or not, desired and wished for... It would explain how so many characters end up with powers they're happy with, abilities that really suit them, even if/when they can't know for sure what powers they might end up with
Like we have Kaku and Kalifa who both seemed happy with the abilities they obtained despite having no idea what powers the mystery fruits the Government offered them would grant them. And that's just those two. Aokiji is a very Chill Dude so his Ice Fruit suits him, same could be said for Ace who was a bit of a hot head. The Wapol's ability to nom on literally anything goes well with his appetite, while Iva-chan and Bon-chan both obtained powers perfect for exploring their genders and identities. Luffy is a ridiculous ray of sunshine, while both Moria and Perona got the most goth-ass fruits available. Buggy's circus acts aside, Shanks did split his heart into pieces that have not come back together yet (though this did not kill the clown, just left him in pieces). Law's fruit was best suited in the hands of a doctor and not only was he was the son of doctor, but he specifically needed its power to not die. Kuma needed the hands of liberation to save not just himself but so many other slaves at God's Valley, and so many others later in life. All Robin wanted was to hold hands with her mom.
With that all in mind. How does Crocodile's ability... suit Crocodile..?
Like sure, on a pure surface level, it suits him in the sense that he was The Final Boss of the Sand Level. You go to a desert, you gonna find some sand. And of course, Alabasta was suffering from severe drought that Crocodile was manufacturing. The Drought Man taking the rain from a country makes sense.
And maybe there isn't anything more to it than that.
But also like, think about it with me for a second
The man who once dreamt of becoming fucking Pirate King ended up a Sand Logia. And I don't even mean that in the "lmao water is his weakness" kinda way (though it certainly doesn't help, all you need is one (1) battle in the middle of a storm and you're dead), I mean like. How doth one rule the seas when your power is to rule the earth instead. That Logia in particular is about as fitting for a Pirate King as a beach is a fitting place for a whale to live on. So if Devil Fruits are somehow drawn to people whom they might suit the most, then how did the Sand Logia end up with Crocodile? How was that the most suitable fruit for him? Was it just bad luck? Was it fate? Did Crocodile even really yearn for that throne to begin with, or was it just the idea of absolute power and fame instead?
Sidenote, but it is worth pointing out that we don't know when Crocodile ate his Devil Fruit. For all we know, it could've been years after he got his ass kicked by Whitebeard, when he had already given up on his dreams. If can't become the king of the oceans, then a Desert King is okay too
I do also want to point out... Was Crocodile drawn to this fruit because it's sand? Because nothing can really grow and blossom in nothing but dry sand, nothing can live in it. Because deserts and wastelands are lonely places. None of Crocodile's plans have ever turned out like he wanted them to, nothing has come to fruition from his ventures. And Crocodile if anyone knows a thing or two about solitude.

Quickening
Also guys, I forgot to post this ages ago, but I think I cracked the code on quickening in Bloodborne?
FromSoft recycles their ideas, right?
So, look at this in Sekiro:
One Mind
Combat Art that unleashes a storm of attacks from a sheathed stance; so fast that the blade is nigh invisible. Costs Spirit Emblems to use.
One must focus their soul on the release of the blade, nothing else. In doing so, the strikes achieve a god-like speed.
This technique was conceived by none other than the old hand swordmaster, Isshin.
My boi Isshin figured out somehow that one could concentrate their soul to the point where they could strike a sword so fast it could barely be seen.
Now, in Soulsborne games, the soul and the blood are the same—though whether that applies to Sekiro, I need to deduce, but it surely applies to Bloodborne when you consider all the links between people’s wills and memories and life ITSELF.
Why doth this matter say thee?
Well see, when the hunters quicken/quick-step, they seem to move so fast that they are unseen for a brief moment, just like Isshin’s sword-strikes…so like…maybe they are using their souls just like he did? Except this time, it’s their whole body…it’s their blood!
I think it’s safe to say that Lady Maria was the practitioner mentioned in the Hunter’s Bone description (gender neutral pronouns in Japanese, after all), and so she might have figured out the same thing Isshin did.
Hell, maybe she even got the idea FROM Isshin….or someone like him. Cainhurst and Japan are linked in-game. I’m sorry, I’m just calling it Japan, because let’s be real…it’s fucking Japan. The Vilebloods are using Japanese swords with Japanese names.
Maria grew up in this culture where her Vileblood peers were using these Japanese weapons, but with a nasty twist—blood-blades. They drew from their own life essence for extra power, and our based Maria frowned on those, yeah? But maybe she found an alternative in order to achieve the quick-step and to out-do her peers.
Maybe she discovered the idea of “One Mind” by connecting or reading up on some Japanese sword hero like Isshin!
Then she was like, “Oh shit…I don’t have to take from my own blood/soul to achieve an extra boost in battle…I can just concentrate…discipline myself to become of one mind and the blood in my body will flow NATURALLY and MOVE me!”
Guys, I think quickening was Maria’s “one mind.”
I think she figured out how to work with her unique blood in a clean and healthy way. You know. Before bad things happened and The Depression.

Doth a Good Spouse a Sith make?
Listen, listen.
I know the Sith are....extreme. The Dark Side is addicting and feeds off of power, ambition, pain and hunger for more.
I am aware.
But.
A Sith falling for a Jedi.
Hear me out!
Like, a Mandalorian Sith, preferably, just out doing their Sithly business, I dunno maybe ruling a planet or two, in an AU where the Mandalorians are either few and scattered or an Empire spanning a good chunk of the galaxy.
The Jedi- like for this to work the relationship would either have to be entirely secret from other Jedi or it's a Last!Jedi AU where said Jedi is rebuilding the Order after a Purge.
like a good Sith!Mand'alor!Din and Luke fic....
But the Jedi would absolutely be conflicted, because first, Sith are violent, have little to no morals and once they decide they want something, they usually do everything in their considerable power to have it. Not to mention the typical disregard for people's lives if they aren't useful to them.
So very high potential for a toxic relationship, yes.
But, if we define Sith as being a person who uses the Dark Side of the Force, swears to the Sith Code and has been trained by a Sith Master, we could have a loophole.
If we define a Darksider as someone who uses the Force with strong emotions, emotions such as passion, the justified rage of the oppressed, righteous fury and the bloodlust every person, regardless of race, gender, creed, religion of age should feel towards slavers and people who harm children....
Technically you would have a socially acceptable Sith Darksider who could be a perfect match for a Jedi who maybe has a history with slavers and is spread too thin in a galaxy that is too large for them to make a drastic difference.
Besides, who didn't like the thought of a Jedi, kind, compassionate and strong, who loves children and just wants to be wrapped in soft blankets, fed good food and be given as many hugs as they want with a significant other who is fierce, intimidating, powerful and strong, also loves children and wouldn't hesitate to destroy the galaxy for their family wrap their loved ones in many soft blankets?
Like honestly, what soothes someone's very strong emotions more then someone you care for wrapped up around you and telling you they'll slaughter all your enemies take care of you so you can sleep and bring their power to bare against any who would threaten them keep you safe, and would love to keep you by their side forever marry you?

Since your fanfic does not include the Kraang at all because of the timeline and stuff, I‘m really interested to know about the following if you don‘t mind!!
First of all, would you say it‘s the Kraang or the Krang
But more importantly, what do you call the trio, or rather big blob? I‘ve seen a lot of variations among fanfics, Kraang brothers/sister, Kraang Prime (for big blob), Kraang One (for big blob, the others would be Two and Three ig) or any other name??
In the Rise universe, it's Krang. I do personally prefer Kraang, I think it looks more appropriately strange and fitting for an alien race, but officially they're the Krang in Rise.
I generally default to calling the big guy Krang Prime and then Krang Brother and Sister respectively. They don't seen to have their own names, (but apparently have a concept of gender despite almost certainly not having the same reproductive binary as us-actually, honestly, that might be more because they're speaking English and they adapted their language to use human terminology, so Sister Krang might not actually be different from her brothers and just decided she wanted to be a she) (diversity win! this genocidal alien picked her own pronouns!) just titles, which is in line with what we know of the Krang and their hyperefficiency and their disregard for things like identity and empathy.
I really do love what they did with the Krang in this universe! There was just no way to keep the movie plotline in doth and have it still make sense. And generally, I do try to stay away from the 'put everything in' terminal disease that affects a lot of these AUs and bog them down. Not everything has to happen or have an equivalent in the AU, and that's okay.

Twelfth night!!
Yeah tumblr would throw that one at me. Okay, let’s talk about Orsino.
—before we can do that, though, in case you’ve never heard me yell about Twelfth Night before, we need to very briefly talk about Hamnet, because you need to understand that all my Twelfth Night thoughts stem off this:
Shakespeare had three children: Susanna, and fraternal twins Judith and Hamnet. Hamnet died in 1596, when he was 11 years old. Twelfth Night, a play about a woman who believes her twin brother has died and later discovers he is incredibly, miraculously alive, is written in 1601. However much you believe the plays are or aren’t biographical, I simply don’t think it's humanly possible for Twelfth Night to be uninfluenced by Hamnet's death. So: Twelfth Night is a play about grief, loss, and fantasizing happy endings and miraculous reunions.
Now back to Orsino.
Orsino… kind of sucks. A lot sucks. The guy is harassing a woman in mourning who has told him repeatedly and explicitly that she has no interest in him, and yet he keeps sending marriage proposals anyway. He threatens to murder Cesario because Olivia likes Cesario more than him. He's more than a little misogynist ("There is no woman's sides / Can bide the beating of so strong a passion / As love doth give my heart; no woman's heart / So big, to hold so much; they lack retention") and his turnaround to proposing to Viola when her identity gets revealed at the end is an hilariously quick heel turn from him proposing to Olivia again literally earlier in that same scene, which makes their happy ending feel very precarious and unearned.
However.
Much of Orsino and Viola/Cesario's relationship happens offstage—the first time we see them interact, we learn that Orsino has been showing Cesario favor and that Viola has already fallen in love with him. There's clearly meant to be some immediate chemistry there, with only the gender issue being a barrier to them being immediate love interests. We never see Orsino and Olivia directly interact until the final scene, when their relationship is already barbed and they're clearly just rehashing an old argument.
I think Orsino is most interestingly played when his "love" for Olivia is transparently a performance of heteronormativity. He might be lying to himself as well as everyone else, but I think the way you make Orsino Not Suck So Much That Seeing Him End Up With Our Main Girl Viola Makes You Wince For Her Sake, is to make it very obvious that he's just grasping at the thing he's supposed to do (fall in love with a woman, marry her) and that all his interest is in Cesario from the moment he turns up. I think it is both comedic and genuinely emotional if part of the reason Orsino sends Cesario to woo for him is coming from a place of, "Well I fell in love with him right away, clearly if anyone can convince Olivia to be in love my Cesario can." (and if the threat to kill Cesario is a very mixed-up "I'm jealous but I don't know of who" kind of thing). The scene where Cesario roundabout confesses to being in love with Orsino (the "I love a woman of about your complexion and years" scene) should, in that interpretation, be absolutely wrought with sexual tension, and the climax and turnaround to proposing to Viola not so much a sudden change of heart, as Orsino going "oh thank god, I have a societally acceptable way to marry this guy now."
Because remember, this play is about fantasizing miraculous happy endings.
It's funny, you know, that in Orsino's very final lines of the play, he still says "Cesario" rather than "Viola," and that his line of "Cesario, come— / For so you shall be while you are a man / But when in other habits you are seen / Orsino's mistress, and his fancy's queen" both refers to Viola/Cesario as being a man, concurrently and in this moment, not just in disguise as one, and also… doesn't precisely preclude the idea that he might be a man again sometimes in the future. There isn't a time limit on that "while you are a man." It's one of those things that's just ripe for trans/genderfluid readings of Viola, and a reading of Orsino that says he's not only okay with that, but actively in favor of it.

Hi! Finally saw this reply, and I will absolutely explain.
First of all, I want to be clear that I love Alva. She's a spiritual successor to Megara from Disney's Hercules, and I think she has a very well done arc in the movie. This is not me hating on a canon female character for the sake of gay shipping. I think she and Jesper have great chemistry... I just think Jesper and Klaus have even better chemistry.
Part of that is the nature of the flim: it's a buddy movie, so it's important for the two buddies to bounce off each other and make us believe they're good together--if not romantically, then platonically. I can't say I've watched a lot of buddy movies, but if I were writing one, one of my top priorities would be to make sure the leads worked well together on a base level.
However, if we look more closely at the language of film--how the scenes are laid out, the shots, the cuts, etc--I think the movie starts resembling a romance when it comes to Klaus and Jesper.
(warning, this turned into 3k of film analysis. very long and image heavy. spoilers for klaus, and the discussion assumes youve seen it at least once)
Exhibit A: The Touch
Step one is a base of good chemistry, but then we add in things like Jesper accidentally touching Klaus' broad chest and pulling away quickly (~43 min in):

But that's not the beginning and end of this sequence, otherwise it would simply read more platonic. See, when Jesper firsts lays his hands on Klaus, his eyes travel to his hands. And then he realizes what he's done and glances up at Klaus:

The shot lingers on this quiet moment between them, filled with nothing but touch. And if that was it, well, yeah you'd get people reading it as romantic, but it still could just be platonic as Jesper realizes he's breached the personal bubble of the man he thought was an axe murderer two nights ago. But something happens between Jesper realizing he fumbled over the touch barrier and him pulling away:

A POV shot. Through Jesper's eyes.
When we shift into Jesper's head, we're privy to a full reaction from Klaus. We don't know exactly what's going on in his head, but he's not angry. If anything, he looks quizzical. Part of this is because Jesper doth protest too much about how much he cares about toy delivery, and this mountain man is re-learning social interaction after decades of isolation.
But again, the movie pauses here. It's not a long, long shot, but it is about one second long. That doesn't seem like a lot, but you can fit quite a bit of information in one second of a movie. Furthermore, the entire sequence, from the initial touch to pulling away is a solid 5 seconds. The movie purposefully delays us here, on this moment, to make sure we see them interact in this way.
Let's play Swap the Genders for a second. If Jesper was, idk, Jespina, how would this interaction be different? Theoretically, it's the same actions and the same, surrounding implications of plot context. But we as an audience have been trained to read "boy and girl share brief, awkward touch" as foreshadowing for a romantic future. In all genres, not just romcoms and dramatic romances, though you bet your butt they're extremely deliberate in those. And with how long the movie lingers here, it would absolutely read as romantic if this were m/f.
But Wait There's More!
Exhibit B: Jesper, The Light
At about the 55 minute mark, we get another interesting sequence. By this point, we know that Klaus' store of toys is drying up, and he hasn't been keen on making more. Jesper, meanwhile, is still a few letters shy of being able to go home to luxury, so he gets an idea on how to convince Klaus to make more toys for Christmas.
We see Klaus out chopping wood when the magic wind we saw earlier in the film (that convinced him to go on the initial deliveries), leads him up to his workshop. Once there, he's greeting by a curtain obscuring part of the shop. A lantern within exudes soft, comforting golden light, and we see a silhouette moving.

The silhouette is feminine, from the look of hair pulled back, to the curvy spine, to the soft triangle of the lower body that implies a dress. We're to assume there is woman there, and as the sequence continues, we're led to assume this is a woman Klaus knows.

He starts to approach, a look of surprise on his face. Then we get a close-up that further betrays his want and concern and hope. This is all portrayed without words, by the way. It's just a series of well-executed shots and poignant music. It's an excellent example of how to raise tension via shots when you have a very stoic character. Klaus doesn't really move his face much. He doesn't mug to the camera like a desperate Let's Player to illustrate that he's having Complicated Emotions. Instead, the shot changes intensify. By the time Klaus is ready to see who's behind the curtain, so are we.
And after all that buildup, the feminine figure reaches out and flings the curtain away to reveal...

Twink Supreme.
Klaus is annoyed the silhouette wasn't who he thought it was and gets more annoyed the longer Jesper tries to pitch him on making toys for Christmas. Klaus tries to get him to stop, but he helps himself to the workshop and starts touching things he shouldn't. This culminates when Jesper yanks a sheet off a wall.

He reveals a very dusty fixture with a familiar-looking masculine woodcut, and a less familiar, but notable feminine one. And underneath their slot are completely empty ones. This is the first time the scene has been shunted into darkness since Klaus entered the workshop.

Klaus is horrified at this thing, even though we can surmise he made it himself. This is forbidden, even to him.
He orders Jesper to leave. Jesper obliges, and we follow him back to the post office where he meets up with absolute cinnamon roll Margú and finally decides to help her write a letter so she can get her own toy like the townies. Jesper goes to Alva for help and via the power of pop ballad montage, we see them get a little closer and end the sequence with the letter in hand.
Now, Jesper knows he can't ask Klaus for help making Margú her toy, so he sets off to make it himself despite not being qualified in the slightest. It's the thought that counts, right?

As the ballad ballads on, we get a crossfade from Jesper working by candlelight to Klaus still sitting and brooding in his dark workshop. A crossfade is a type of transition from scene to scene where one picture gradually fades into the next. As we fade from Jesper to Klaus, we get an incredible image:

Jesper is in the forbidden zone. His visage has replaced the dusty, hidden remnants that have been there so long. Moreover, once again, the movie heavily contrasts light and dark. Much like how the curtains obscuring Jesper earlier were the only light in the darkness of the workshop, now again is Jesper the beacon of warmth. A beacon that Klaus has turned away from, much like he did the tree carving before.
Now, I need y'all to put a pin in this. I swear I have a conclusion to this sequence, but I need to talk about something else first.
Exhibit C: The Porch Scene
Klaus eventually shows up to the post office and sees that Jesper made a mess of the woodworking for the gift. He starts fixing it, and the two head out into the night to the nearby Sámi camp/village to deliver Margú's toy. The ballad is still going, by the way, and it rises back up in lyrics and power as the young girl tests out her... snow-windsurfing board? It looks dope. Jesper seemingly for the first time understands the meaning of doing good deeds. Eventually, they return to Klaus' home, all excited from the escapade. Especially Jesper.
As they stable the reindeer, Klaus admits that it's been a long time since he's felt this way, and that "she" used to tease him when he got that doofy smile on his face. Who is "she," Jesper asks.
"My Lydia," he replies.
Klaus recounts how he and his wife found enjoyed their little mountain hideaway. But, he says, it wasn't going to be the two of them for long.

Light blossoms again as we flash back to a younger Klaus and his wife, excited to start their lives together, and very excited to start a family, a large one. At least seven children judging by the niches on the tree. Unfortunately for them, no children came. And then Lydia got sick. And then she was gone. He supposes he lost his way after she died, making birdhouse after birdhouse because she loved birds.

"Then," Klaus says, turning to gaze fondly at Jesper, "you showed up."
He says that he never thought he'd feel this again--"this" of course being the joy of seeing children's faces when they got a new toy he worked hard on. No, "this" doesn't refer to romance, but again, if Jesper were Jespina, we would absolutely be expected to take this as, if not foreshadowing, then barely-subtextual confirmation that there are romantic feelings somewhere in the mix.
But that's not just looking too hard through a queer lens at this interaction. Remember that pin from the previous section? Pull it out and let's discuss. See, the movie, through film language alone, equates Jesper to Lydia.

We were expected to believe the silhouette from earlier was a woman's. A woman who we understood to be important to Klaus. Now, we know that she wasn't just important, he loved her, was married to her. To see her silhouette in Jesper's positions the two as equals if they can so easily be mistaken for each other. Essentially, something about Jesper reminded Klaus of Lydia.
But of course, the movie didn't do this just once.

The movie equates Jesper to Lydia when it crossfades between the post office and the workshop during the breakup sequence. I mentioned that Jesper is the light in the darkness here, but superimposing him over something so important and devastating to Klaus places him squarely within the field of those feelings as well. And once we learn that the carved tree was Klaus and Lydia's wish for family, suddenly Jesper being there in the frame puts him as family.
Now, could you read this as just platonic "found family?" Yeah, absolutely, and the film does a great job doing that later on when the Sámi enter the workshop. But I argue that the movie has gone out of its way several times to specifically equate Jesper and Lydia. These two people are both lights in the darkness for Klaus. They tease him good-naturedly. But most importantly, the porch scene recontextualizes a much earlier scene from being merely mysterious to Lydia outright endorsing Jesper's presence in Klaus' life.
Back around the 30 minute mark, Jesper approached Klaus after a successful day of getting the kids to write letters for toys. He implores Klaus to give away his myriad of toys that're just collecting dust in the workshop. Klaus is seemingly less than impressed, until a strange wind blows in. We see this odd wind several times throughout the movie, and Klaus seems to understand what it wants, despite it not speaking. During the porch scene, we learn that he believes the strange wind is Lydia's spirit keeping him company and giving him a nudge in the right direction if he needs it. At the end of the movie, the wind tells him it's time to let go and to move on. At the point where Jesper is trying to persuade Klaus to do deliveries...

The strange wind circles him in a halo, forcing Klaus to pay attention. The wind's approval--Lydia's approval--is what makes Klaus decide to help deliver the toys beyond the first one.
Essentially, not only does the movie equate Jesper to Lydia through imposing their likenesses over each other and through similar light/dark contrasts, it has her appear in the beginning and straight-up endorse Jesper's entry into Klaus' life.
Exhibit D: "Ah, Young Love!"
This next section is not so much about the homoeroticism as is it why, despite my love for Alva, her canonical romantic entanglement with Jesper pales in comparison to the accidental (?) homoeroticism of Jesper and Klaus.
There's a line that the boatman says about 39 minutes into the film after Alva has a very public, very angry confrontation with Jesper. At this point, the kids are very reward-driven, attending the school-turned-fish shop purely so they can learn to write so they can send a letter so they can get a toy. Alva yells at Jesper about how the violent, constantly feuding families won't stand for their children attending school together. She views his sending the kids to her as a threat to her ability to save up enough money to get away from Smeerensburg forever and pursue her dreams somewhere she'll be useful and appreciated.
After Alva leaves, the smug trickstery boatman says:

"Ah! Young love."
I have always found this line incredibly grating because it's a classic example of Telling rather than Showing. Now, people in recent years have pushed back against that old adage, but there are times you want to show something to the audience rather than just stating it in a straightforward manner. Romantic relationships, for one thing.
As I mentioned at the top of this post, this is a buddy movie between Jesper the Postman and Klaus the future Santa Claus. They are the main characters of the film. Both of them need to carry this movie equally, and the best way to do that is to make sure they have excellent chemistry with each other. The film succeeds at this, and then some.
Alva, on the other hand, is not the main character. She is a major supporting character, and I think the movie would be lesser if she were absent, but her and Jesper's romantic relationship was always doomed to be Told rather than Shown. Because theirs is not the most important relationship in the movie.
I think the film could have done better about this, though. Getting rid of that young love line, for one thing. It's the sort of line you have someone say in the hopes that you can sneak in some romantic foreshadowing for the canonical couple. Unfortunately, it's about as subtle as a brick to the face.
The film seems to be going for a Bad First Impressions/Enemies-ish to Lovers thing with Jesper and Alva, but it really falls flat. They just don't spend enough time with each other for me to believe they're falling in love. Not to say they don't have cute moments. The montage where they help Margú write her letter is really nice, and the film shows Alva scooting closer and closer to Jesper as they hang out more and get to know each other. However, it's a montage, one with a song covering the bits of dialogue we get from them as they work. If the movie wanted to make me believe that Alva and Jesper had as much, if not more, chemistry together than Jesper and Klaus, then they probably should have changed the scene to be less focused on the montage and more focused on them playfully bantering back and forth.
But again, I think the relationship was doomed from the start, purely because Alva is not a main character. They probably would have had to make Jesper the eventual Santa Claus and nix Klaus in order to give Alva the proper amount of room.
(However, I think that would have ended up making the movie a bit too much like Rankin-Bass' stop-motion Santa Claus is Comin' to Town. Think about it: that special starts with a postman narrating about letters; it emphasizes that the question "Why do people write letters to Santa?" will be explored and answered; the main setting is a depressing, grungy town headed by a cartoonishly evil leader; there's a jaded ginger-haired schoolteacher who learns to loosen up and love life again, etc.)
I wish things had been different with Alva, or maybe that they had been allowed a longer runtime to really sell the relationship. As it is, it's fine. It works for what it is. But Jesper and Klaus' relationship is simply deeper, more subtle, and more meaningful.
Conclusion
Thank you for coming to my post about why Klaus is an extremely gay movie despite not being a gay movie. I wish I could wrap this up more academically, but I've made my thesis obvious and I have work at 7:30am tomorrow.

like hello. i know what the canon dialogue is saying but also. mr naruhodou doth protest too much... i think in a safe/unusual context (think 221B shenanigans) he may try dressing up and enjoy the swoosh and texture of a dress ! Maybe in a gender way maybe not (especially given the Victorian/Meiji era context) but i find this kind of stuff fun to wonder about x) ...and shamelessly project on, lets be honest too
