Yoongi, your brother’s best friend, was painfully always there in your life, you didn’t know how the mess that was your brother was able to have such a good friend, they knew each other even before you were born, when they were only four and met each other at basketball practice. Yoongi was always like your brother’s conscience, the voice of reason, the calm one, the designated driver ever since he was sixteen, the smart one, the boy every mother wanted as their son. Yoongi was the boy who helped you with your math homework when you were eleven, he was the boy who defended you when your brother made fun of you, the boy who gave you his joystick so you would stop crying when you found out your brother was making you play with the one that didn’t work. He was sweet and kind with everybody, you wished you knew that when you were twelve so you could save yourself the eternal heartache that came along with being in love with a man who only saw you as your brother’s little sister.

Yoongi was always mature, always wiser, always older. And you were always immature, always stubborn, always younger. Just a brat who couldn’t stand the fact that he was the only one you wanted, but the only one you couldn’t have.

Maybe forgetting about him when he went away to college was the best thing that happened to you, you pretended he didn’t exist during the school year and made yourself believe you got over it, that your heart didn’t jump every time you called your brother and you heard his voice in the background, that you didn’t read every birthday message he sent you since you were sixteen until you memorized them, that you didn’t compare every guy to him and that you weren’t annoyed when you realized that none of them was half as intelligent as him. You were obligated to pretend you weren’t condemned to look for his face in every crowd ever since you were a teenager. All that mental effort was wasted away when you came back home for the holidays and saw him sitting on your couch again.

You repeated the cycle every year as you pretended that your heart wasn’t tired of it, like seeing him that morning in your kitchen didn’t make your heart drop like you were twelve years old again.

WHAT IF THEY HAD GIVEN UP?

From the top of the skyscraper, Yokohama shone in the night for miles down there, extending over the horizon. It was impossible to tell the ocean from the starry sky, and it felt like being swallow whole from the city.

“I won’t follow you this time.”

His words flew into the same breeze that had his red locks escaping under the hat he wore. He didn't turn to challenge his gaze, to scream at his face like he was used to. No, he stayed still with heavy feet on the pavement, gravity grounding him in a place where it had heads spinning.

“This shit’s old and I got tired of all of this… nothing! ‘Cause this is nothing you give me while I always spend everything I own,” at least anger remained in his voice, “And it’s not fair.”

“Whenever is it?”, he questioned with his eyes fixed on his petit figure, hands balled into fist inside the pocket of his trench coat and a red and white, half empty package of cigarettes crumpling between fingers.

“Never, but I won’t hold onto it anymore, Dazai.”

He hid the crawling feeling running under the bandages against his skin with the lame excuse of circumstances. From that height, summer turned out to be incredibly chilly.

“Finally I obtained to find the limit of a dog's loyalty, huh?”, he couldn't help but jab him just to get one of his normal reaction back.

But he looked at him by the corner of his eye, the electric blue iris seizing him up with finality.

“Goodbye then, Chuuya.”

It always came easy the fake cheeky grin on his lips, the little tilt of head on the side that made his brown wavy locks hide one of his eyes -like he used to do with bandages back then- and a mocking hand shaking in a salute gesture.

As if it still was friendly. As if it was a see ya soon instead.

It always has been so fucking easy to pretend until everything around him just became his own play-act to have fun with.

And now both parties did have enough of this cat and mouse game.

It was over.

“Goodbye.”

I wonder if at some point, Kakashi might have seriously considered leaving Konoha.

In the end, he is too loyal and too determined to protect the people he loves to truly abandon his home.

But I wonder if he toyed with the idea. In the middle of the night, back slick with sweat after yet another nightmare.

He thinks of how Konoha destroyed his father, thrust Obito into a war he wasn’t ready for, instilled in Rin ideals that led her to believe killing herself was justified because it was in the best interests of the village. He thinks of Minato and Kushina slaughtered before their baby ever got to know them.

He wonders if maybe he’d be better off striking the Leaf symbol from his hitai-ate, leaving behind the strict shinobi code in favor of his own. A code which embraces the grey, prioritizes empathy.

Maybe he even toys with it a little, sneaks out of the village when he’s not on mission to see how long he can get away with before he’s missed; before a hawk circles above his hiding place to call him home.

Like when you’re a kid and you hop out your window, wander down the road or into the woods to a secret spot only you know. Just to test it out. Like “running away” just for a little while might fix whatever is broken.

You always go home, in the end. And so does Kakashi.

Because he would never forgive himself if he truly abandoned his post; the way Sakumo abandoned his son or Rin abandoned her surviving teammate.

I wonder if when Sasuke defects from his home in pursuit of Orochimaru—of power—Kakashi understands a little more than most because he’s considered the same path.

Weighed the price of leaving against the one he has already paid to stay.

Comment:

This fic was just incredible. The tension between Remus and Sirius, and all the heartache and yearning and want and all the other emotions all just felt so real and it was really easy to get completely absorbed into their little universe, I highly recommend checking it out and reading it! Also, there's some beautiful smut later in the fic and the build up to that is just *chefs kiss*.

new chapter (7): Taken

In this chapter: Jonathan, Steve, and Eddie are off to Murray's. I think S2 really sort of glossed over the fact that Sesser, IL (where Murray lives) is a long drive away from Hawkins (although they insinuated that by making Jancy sleep at a motel before going further). Wish them luck, they're about to find some horrible truths, get wasted with Murray, and do a lot of conspiracy shit. As for Steve and Eddie, well. Maybe another baby step. Writing this chapter made me realize that I am not well (lmao). Also expect Wayne being the best dad, Robin and Nancy being cleverer than ever, although they don't have much screen time here.

ill be honest the first time i read The Long Way Around (which must have been in 2018 !) and for a while after i simply was not aware it was a series, even after i started following you? when you posted rise up i remember being very surprised and excited "oh there's MORE?" so i really have zero expectations lol

i absolutely adore it and it's a very wonderful series, thank you (and i am also very glad you are a fan of other things i am a fan of, so i can just hop fandoms and continue enjoying your fic)

Ahhhh you're gonna make me scream because I also am in love with your stories. I've adored them for years and now have been greedily reacquainting myself with all the excellent BNHA stories I've loved over the years. Your 30 minute fics still haunt me and are Astounding.

When I first wrote TLWA, the seeds of the hypothetical future were there but didn't really cement until I finished the story. Once done, I came up with what eventually became Rise Up and the finale story. I've had that finale story outlined down to the detail for years. It's always bothered me, having that ending live only in my head, to be incomplete. That coupled with a bit of a falling out with BNHA made it hard to get momentum going. I decided a few weeks ago to really make an honest effort at wrapping things up.

I decided to bridge the gap, to dip my feet back into the world, by writing a sort of set-up/in between piece that addresses things I've wanted to talk about but never had the space to. It's actually going well! I'm finally starting to get into the groove and have about 7000 words so far. My optimistic prediction is Feb/March but oh the more I write this fic the more I'm raring to go the finale fic. With it all plotted, I hope that comes out fairly quickly like TLWA/RU did.

This whole verse is still very important to me, Rise up remains one of my favorite fics I've written and I get teary eyed every time I reread it. I'm so genuinely excited to move forward with this, its like coming full circle even if I took the long way around.

I love all of these writers so, so very much and picking just ONE fic by them is very difficult for me, which is one of the reasons why it's so hard to make rankings or define my *one* favorite fic ever. Just consider that anything written by them ever is on my list (because I think I've read almost everything by them, if not all) and highly recommend it.

Based on a reading error that I made the other day... Modern AU.

Brian: I've got us tickets to the latest car show

Roger: You've got us tickets? You?

Brian: Well... you said I never paid enough attention to what you're interested in unless I'm interested in it too, so... I thought this would be a good way to show you that I do pay attention and I do care about what you like, even though I might not be as interested in it as you are.

Roger: Oh. Well, that's nice of you 🥺. When is it then?

Brian: Three weeks on Saturday

Roger: Really? A car show 3 weeks on saturday... I've not heard of that one

Brian: Oh. Well maybe it's a smaller one, or new. You tend to go for the big hot rod exhbitions

Roger: True.

~ Three weeks later ~

Some kids dressed up run passed them as they turn the corner

Roger: Lot of kids here, it seems

Brian: Yes. The poster said it was a family event, for kids of all ages

Roger: You're telling me this now?

Brian: Sorry, I thought that was the norm for car shows

Roger: Oh. No- Well, I think it depends. The one with the refurbished Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was quite kid friendly I suppose.

Brian: I'm sure it'll be good-

They stop at the entrance of the stretch of empty land that is being used for the "car show". It's very... aimed at kids. There's a lot of red balloons in the shape of cars and bizarrely, some that look like bees that are also in the shape of cars, and a bouncy castle in the shape of a tow truck, brown with a texture effect to make it look rusty.

There's a faint hum of music as two songs from two areas clash in the open air. One song is being played in a marquis somewhere in the distance. It sounds a bit country-rock-ish. Nearer sounds like a doo wop song that reminds Brian of The Platters.

Roger: Brian.

Brian: Um

Roger: Er... Bri, when you saw the advert for this car show, what did it actually say?

Brian: It, erm, it said "Coming Saturday the 14th, Cars in the Park, for kids of all ages."

Roger: ... Brian.

Brian: ... Featuring 50s classics...

Roger: ...

Brian: Maybe that meant music instead of cars...
