#duke thomas's powers are literally so cool

Note
I saw your post a couple days ago about Duke seeing the batfam members auras differently, and I really liked it! You totally don't have to if you don't want to, but I'm new to the fandom, and am only vaguely aware of Duke's light/light-remniscent/related(?) powers... would you mind explaining them to me (no idea he could see 'auras', and that sounds so cool!)? Otherwise I'm sure I'll pick it up from somewhere else/look it up myself @ some point soon enough :)
I might not be completely accurate because I still haven't gotten around to reading more recent comics but I'll tell you the gyst of what I understand of his powers.
Duke can manipulate light. So he can turn the lights up and down and all that jazz.
This extends to the entire electromagnatic spectrum, so that means that Duke can see shrimp colors, and see Radiowaves to Gamma Rays and maybe even more. It also means he could manipulate those too, so theoretically Duke could hack radiosignals with nothing but his powers to get a message across, or he could heat up food, or maybe even stop/absorb/redirect Gamma Rays from being harmful to people by changing the wavelength
Duke can also use his powers to see flashes of the future and past.
That's all I can remember, but Duke is also a Demigod (Son on Gnomon) so there's a possiblity he could be even more powerful that the things i've listed

For the DC ask game!
38. Who do you think is the most overlooked or underused character?
Thank you for the ask, Quo!
Hmm the first character that comes to mind is Duke Thomas (tbh I’m starting to see more of him lately which I really like eg in the Outsiders and reoccurring/being mentioned in the batfamily based comics), but yeah I think he’s often overlooked.
I realise I’ve answered your question above already haha, however I’m just going to give you some reasons I love Duke and why we should see more of him because more people should know about him:
Firstly, his powers! His ability to manipulate light and shadows and see the past/future and other dimensions as a result, is amazing and gives opportunity to so many interesting scenarios and possibilities. He has Night vision, Super vision, x-ray vision, etc. He can manipulate light in pretty much any way possible eg creating beams &bending them, controlling the colour/brightness. He can even turn invisible which is incredible.
He’s also a genius!! I seriously don’t get why no one talks about this kid and his detective skills. “Tim discovered Batman’s identity *gasp*” …yeah he did…but he wasn’t the only one! This boy single handedly figured out Batman’s identity, Dick’s when he was Agent 37, Damian’s AND Alfred’s identity during the we are Robin movement
Ah yes, this leads to the We are Robin movement he led (a group of them at least). And let’s never forget that time he jumped out the back of a moving police car to continue going against the system and continue pursuing the we are Robin movement.
Back to his smarts-This little boy trained to out riddle the riddler. What child does that?? The kids a genius and his confidence is amazing. He’s super talented and loves quizzes and puzzles.
He found his jokerised parents by himself. (This is actually heartbreaking because his parents were good people. They were a loving family and his parents got screwed over by the fucking joker). After the police pretty much said we don’t give a fuck about finding your parents, Duke himself searched for his parents, knowing they were alive. There was a possibility that they were jokerized but that never stopped him. He literally scoured the sewers to find them, only to see them laughing hysterically and not recognizing their own son. Their little boy was nothing but an object standing in front of their laughter ridden bodies.
Okay *wipes tears* moving on: He is immortal/might be immortal! (idk for sure) but it’s so cool either way!. Although, the way dc brings back the dead, every character is immortal.

batkids and their relationships with their siblings headcanons. under read more because this got fucking LONGGG
dick
dick is the eldest so he doesnt want to bog down his younger siblings with his problems, but if he DOES, he tends to talk to jason about it
dick and cass start to really begin to bond when Cass shows up to dicks gymnastics class for 3rd-6th graders and then cass shows up all the sixth graders and they get frozen yogurt after lmao
dick and tim are Very much thick as thieves. tim is very much like bruce on the Emotional Suppression scale, so dick just really wants to make sure his little brother is safe and happy ALL the time
Duke and Damian are the only two really permanently at the manor anymore, so when dick drops by he tries to do something with both of them. duke frantically zoom calls dick every other week to help him with his his trig homework. dick shows up to dukes high school graduation with literally the BIGGEST SIGN
everyone insists damian is dicks favorite but he does actually genuinely love all his siblings equally, his relationship with damian is just Very different from the others because of the age gap and being dami's primary caretaker for a year. dick babies dami every chance he gets
jason
would sell Dick to satan for One corn chip
him and cass don't have the greatest start to their relationship because cass is very much Against Killing so it takes a while for jason to warm up to her and earn her trust. now, though, jason is competing with steph by showing cass all the classic American Teenager things she missed out on. steph is currently winning but jason is like 98% positive a crunch wrap from taco bell is going to push him over the edge
tim and jason are currently competing over who can solve the most cases in a month. tim is winning. that won't last long.
jason Loves to Big Brother duke its so embarrassing. duke will get out of school and go to his car and jason is SITTING IN THE FRONT SEAT FRANTICALLY WAVING TO GET DUKES ATTENTION. JASON THAT IS MY CAR. signal has one (1) mission with arsenal and arsenal goes hey did you ask that girl to homecoming yet and duke is like I DON'T EVEN KNOW YOU.
Damian is proof that Actually, Little Brothers are Pests. Jason fully believes that he was brought back from the dead PURELY to torment damian and he will fulfill this mission at any cost
cassandra
it actually really upset her when Dick didn't accept her at first. she knows her other siblings really adore dick so his lack of trust was really disheartening. it takes dick a while but once he Actually Accepts that cass is going to be a permanent part of their life and oh, wow, dick you really hurt her feelings he really hyperfocuses on bonding with cass for a couple of months which definitely improves their relationship
she really likes jason!! their relationship doesn't start well but because he's close with steph and tim who are cass's top two favorite people to exist ever, cass is like well i GUESS ill hang out with him more. jason is fun to talk to because he always tries his best to explain jokes and give context to what people are talking about (also tim took her to taco bell already but she didn't tell jason she just wanted to hang out)
cass LOVES tim. they just click okay. tim always seems to know when to give her space and when to push and come closer. Tim's "guest room" is just her room lets be real. tim and cass occasionally get mistaken for twins and Cass Loves it.
duke makes cass listen to metal once and cass loses. her. damn. mind. they bond over music a lot because they both Love Music to a degree the others in their family don't.
damian!! damian is her little brother!!! dami isn't As Hostile to cass at first because he is 100% aware cass has the edge in fighting and respects her. cass likes all of his instagram posts and they have a snapchat streak going
tim
tim Loves dick, dick was his first sibling!! he had Very strong hero worship when he first met dick but it mellowed out when tim got older because wow 17 is really not that cool and mature lol. tim has an open invitation to dick's apartment which he does occasionally take advantage of. tim has more than once scared the shit out of wally when wally comes over and wally is convinced they're being robbed (HA) for half a second. i mean. he's not wrong.
listen. tim understands that forgiving the guy who tried to kill you would be a Struggle for some people and it was! definitely! but also at least he can trust jason to, uh, be open about if he doesn't like tim. which is not an assurance he has with other people. so if the guy who tried to kill him tells him tim is cool now then like. maybe tim isn't that bad or annoying a person? also jason arrested a whole gang and won the cases competition but then it created a power vacuum that the whole batfam had to clean up the rest of the month. thanks, jason.
tim LOVES cass. you know how most of the time theres this empty feeling inside you and you just kind of ignore it because you don't know what will fix it or if you do, you know you can't fix it? cass makes that empty feeling feel a little less empty. they just click. tim always tries to travel with cass whenever she leaves gotham.
tim and duke. Tim is actually the sibling who duke goes to whenever he has questions he doesn't want to ask bruce or alfred about, like, life or vigilante-ing or school or college or whatever and Tim is always like yes!! i love Giving Advice and Solving Problems!! tim and duke and jason fill out their college applications together.
tim and damian. LMAO. ROUGH START THAT'S ALL ILL SAY. at some point alfred goes like fuck it. family therapy. and tim and dami are PISSED. tim and damian get along best when they have a common enemy to work against. their relationship gets much better when damian is older and they actually talk about their feelings like emotionally stunted bats. despite how bad their relationship was, tim will ALWAYS protect damian
duke
very much intimidated by dick at first. dick is so much older and has his own job and friends and life and is very much AN ADULT. dick likes to take duke out to do lots of cool stuff (paintball, lasertag, tech exhibitions, concerts, etc). also, dick PERSONALLY introduced duke to superman and is dating THE FLASH. 10/10 awesome big brother.
was intimidated by jason for 0.5 seconds before jason actually opened his mouth and started speaking. jason is literally. So Embarrassing. which is weird because nobody else really seems to feel that way about jason but duke knows he's 100% in the right here. like yeah jason is also An Adult and does Adult Stuff but he's also at the manor like every other weekend???? and he always complains about bruce but always seems to be in the same room bruce is in????? like okay jason. they bond over literature!! jason and duke and alfred will spend literal hours talking about books and duke loves it. duke is the only one who doesn't think jason is funny and jason gets so upset about it lmao.
cass has this one week where she gets really into photography and by virtue of being nearby (and also not nocturnal), duke becomes her victim subject. duke prints out all the pictures and hangs them up in his room (his favorite is one he took when he stole the camera and took a really bad selfie of them together).
tim is closest in age to duke so duke tends to hang around with him a lot. tim introduced duke to his young justice friends and duke is like yes!!! meta-friends!!!! tim really helps duke out with his powers because tim is always like wow i wonder if your powers would work if we did This? can you see farther than other people? is your visible spectrum of light different than other humans? Bruce does the same thing but bruce is boring about it lol.
damian and duke live in the same house and will be in the same room and just send each other social media posts back and forth. they follow each other on instagram and will, OCCASIONALLY, make tik toks together because they're tik tok fiends. each of his siblings have visited his parents once or twice but damian routinely comes with him.
damian
damian gets a special bullet point to say that it took him. forever to come around to the idea of having siblings. he very much believed that he was Bruce's Blood Son and everyone else were just tagalongs or allies. it took him ages to acknowledge that dick, jason, tim, and cass were his siblings, so when duke came and like a week later damian was like Ah, Yes, this is my brother Thomas everyone else was like dude wtf
listen. LISTEN. Obviously. Richard is very highly skilled. and also Father values him highly. and also Richard will listen to Damian complain about his schoolmates. and also Richard is much more patient with Damian than other members of his family. listen....,,, (all this to say damian kind of fucking adores dick lmaooooo this kid).
Todd is kind of unbearable but damian has been informed this is both a normal feeling when it comes to Todd and also big brothers. damian was an only child for ten years so yes, Father, if Todd attempts to tickle me I WILL break his fucking nose. yes i WILL put money in the swear jar but I want you to know i don't regret it. they always try to sneak up on each other but mostly fail.
DRAKE!!! but no lol once damian grows up and is like I Apologize for attempting to murder you it was wrong and you are just as much a son to Father as I am tim is like UGH i guess its cool since ur being so emotionally mature and all. also im 2 for 5 on siblings trying to murder me so im definitely going to win trauma bingo and damian is like i take it back you are insufferable. When Will My Older Siblings Stop Joking About Their Trauma.
CASS!!! listen. cass is cool. Cass Gets It. They have a special Bond. also damian really likes it whenever cass is home because 1) he gets to hang out and do something cool with cass and 2) he feels significantly safer with cass in the house because Nobody will be able to hurt any of their family if Cass is there. ALSO he tries to call her cain but everyone is like DONT DO THAT and he doesn't want to call her wayne bcus theyre ALL wayne (dick adds it on as a middle name but also Richard John Wayne West-Grayson is just. the lamest name ever so dick needs to reconsider it before his upcoming nuptials)((dick will not reconsider it except maybe whether grayson-west would work better)) and so he tries cassandra but cass is like :) call me cass and damian is like cassandra is more formal and respectful and cass is like :) and finally damian just has to give in.
Duke! him and duke actually live together so they get the Most Bonding Time and have a bunch of inside jokes as a result. (is it bad i wanted to laugh because inside jokes... joker... i'll see myself out). they're eating breakfast together (and also alfred sits with them IM NOT A MONSTER ALFIE'S LIKE 70 NOW OKAY) and duke laughs and bruce is like what are you laughing at, son? and duke is like oh damian just showed me this funny meme and then he shows the phone to bruce and bruce grabs it (both the boys groan) and after WAY TOO LONG is like "i don't get it" and so now duke and damian have to try and explain the comedic intricacy of bob's burgers

how to never stop being sad
Summary: Following his brother's acceptance, Roman's life felt like it was falling apart. His family was turning against him, that awful snake was being allowed in their home, and worst of all, he still couldn't seem to do anything right, no matter how hard he tried.
How does he choose to deal with it?
Not in a good way, that's for sure.
Warnings: Gore/Death/Violence (none actually occur but it is described), food mention, cursing
AO3 link
Chapter 1
Repeat to yourself that they’re not really gone
Time has proven
That fooling yourself into believing a lie
Is the most effective way
To deal with things you have no control over
Roman was fine. Completely 100% percent, absolutely fine, and he would tolerate no thinking to the contrary. Things were abnormal, sure, but he was coping. Maybe he felt a bit (a lot) guilty for letting things in the Mindscape get so bad, but it’s okay! He’s managing! Maybe he’s surrounded by people that barely tolerate him now, but he’ll fix it!
...eventually.
Right now, though, he’s in his room. Alone, as is usual these days. Usually, he’d ask Patton or Virgil to hang out with him, but after the last video, things were… Tense, to say the least.
Patton wasn’t mad at him, of course; he wasn’t ever truly mad at any of them. However, Roman would have to be stupid not to notice the disappointed looks Patton gave him when he thought he wasn’t looking or the way that after Roman left the room, he always made a point to talk to Janus afterwards, as if he needed special attention just for enduring Roman’s presence.
Things were a little better with Virgil, but he was frustrated with Roman for tolerating Janus’ presence at all. Despite his obvious vitriol towards him, he still outright refused to talk about what exactly Janus had ever done to him. So Roman was forced to choose between Patton, his father figure who’d never meant to do him wrong (who had acted like Roman was unreasonable for sticking to the very moral rule set that Patton had imposed on him since they were children), or Virgil, who Roman had been wrong in not listening to before, & who was obviously extremely hurt and betrayed by both Janus, and now his own family.
He still hadn’t quite been able to choose, straddling the line between adhering to Patton’s kindness policy towards Janus and respecting Virgil’s feelings. It didn’t really work-- rather, it just seemed to leave them both dissatisfied. Roman could hardly stand it.
...but it’s fine. Really. It’ll blow over eventually. He isn’t quite sure how, exactly, but things always turn out alright in the end, right? There’s always a happy ending.
Except when there isn’t, but… bad endings only happen in Remus’ stories, & he doesn’t have power here in the Mindscape.
...except he sorta does, now. After his video, he’d (albeit reluctantly) been accepted. His ideas were considered, even valued, now. Sometimes, he was even chosen over Roman. Not only by Thomas, but also by the other sides, at times; Logan may think he’s slick, but Roman’s seen him specifically request his brother’s assistance in the Imagination, in the living room, in the archives, in his room- It made Roman sick to think about, and whenever he walked through the house, he could see evidence of his brother’s influence littered throughout. For the life of him, he couldn’t understand the appeal. When had society fallen so far as to value a duke more than a prince?
---
Roman hadn’t thought he’d been in his room for long; he’d only meant to duck in to get a breather after having to endure Remus’ maniacal ramblings for nearly half an hour, but it seemed he’d been brooding long enough to attract Logan’s concern. He heard a knock at his door and broke out of his haze, looking towards it.
“I apologize for bothering you Roman, but I was wanting to inquire whether you were alright. It’s been an hour,” Logan said. Had Roman really been away for that long? No wonder Logan was checking on him.
“Yeah, Specs- Sorry. I’ll be out in a minute, just finishing a project,” he lied. Logan was so cold, calm, rational- Surely he would look down on Roman’s groveling simply because he couldn't deal with his brother for more than a few minutes. As much as Roman was full of himself and proud of his work, he thought if Logan talked down to him, he’d break down and cry.
“We’re currently 'hanging out' in the common room. You’re welcome to join whenever you finish. I look forward to hearing about what you’ve been working on.” Roman could hear his footsteps slowly grow farther from the door.
Shit. Now Logan thought he’d been working on something, so now he had to do something-- he couldn't just show up empty-handed. They’d see through his lies in an instant. He’d be just as bad as Janus, imagine what Virgil would think--
He took a steadying breath. Okay, yeah, he’d lied, but that wasn’t so awful, he just had to make it right. He just had to make something, and that shouldn’t be so hard, right? That’s his job! He’ll just think of something real quick, and it’ll be done in a jiffy, and then it won’t be a lie anymore, and on top of that, he’ll have something to talk about! Talking parts were hard to come by sometimes when you had to find something that would include the two people you hate most, your former-enemy-turned-best-friend, your dad and your colleague (as he insisted to be called), but everyone was always eager to hear his new ideas, so this would be perfect.
---
It was nothing special, but it would do. He hadn’t had the time or energy to think of a concept for a whole scripted video, so instead, he’d written the next Shoutout Sunday. Simple, but it had to be done, and it was already Friday, anyways. He closed his notebook, and stood up, keeping it under his arm. He never knew when inspiration would strike, so he tried to carry it with him whenever possible. He opened his door and stepped out from his room, making his way down the hallway past the multicolored doors of the other sides, pointedly avoiding looking at Janus’ signature black and yellow-colored door. Out of sight, out of mind.
As he walked into the commons, the conversations faltered for a moment, but everyone quickly returned to what they were doing. Remus was noticeably absent; Patton and Virgil were curled up on the couch, sharing a blanket between them and speaking in excited whispers; and Logan and Janus were speaking across the counter separating the living room and the kitchen while Logan made dinner on the stove and Janus leaned with his hands crossed under his chin.
Roman lingered by the stairs for a moment, caught off guard by the lack of greeting, but continued to the side of the couch not occupied by Patton and Virgil. He’d hoped to share his script with Logan, but he was busy at the moment, and he so rarely was this casual with the others; Roman figured it better to let him be for the time being. He pulled his notebook from under his arm and summoned a pencil from his desk. If he couldn’t share his idea, he might as well get started on the next.
He spent around five minutes doodling a new creature to introduce into the Imagination when Logan finally seemed to notice he was there.
“Ah, Roman! Apologies, I hadn’t noticed you were here. What was the idea you were working on?” he asked. He turned off the stove and fully turned to Roman, looking past Janus. Roman was almost ashamed to say he felt a certain degree of satisfaction that Logan had put aside his conversation with Janus in favor of speaking with him. Keyword being "almost."
“Well, it is a most illustrious, melodic creation--” Roman sunk down from the living room and rose into the kitchen, laid his now open notebook on the counter, and gestured towards it with a bow-- “Behold, the newest Shoutout Sunday!” He smiled and rose from his position, bouncing on his feet a bit as Logan rested his chin on his hand, looking thoughtful, and read it. Logan gave a slight, satisfied smile.
“So you’ve worked ahead of schedule, then. Wonderful! Good work, Roman."
“I know,” Roman replied, beaming, “I shall have a new idea by the morn-- perhaps I can even start the next video script!”
“So long as you do not burn yourself out, Roman. Otherwise, I look forward to your next contribution.” Logan closed Roman’s notebook, handed it back to him, and then opened a cabinet, gathering bowls for… Whatever healthy monstrosity was in the pot on the stove. Roman could only guess what it was. Some sort of soup, maybe? “Will you be joining us for dinner tonight, Roman?”
“I’m afraid there are simply too many ideas and too little time, I must return to my work!” Roman replied. Janus narrowed his eyes at him from across the counter.
“I wouldn’t be witnessing any self-neglect right now, would I, Roman?” his voice dripped, cool and patronizing. It carried a lilt of care, but it was clearly faked-- Patton would have scolded him if he’d been listening. Roman rolled his eyes.
“No, I am simply dedicated to my craft! Creations don’t come from thin air, do they?” he replied. Logan tilted his head, brows furrowed.
“...They do,” he said. He raised his palm, and atop it, a paper appeared. “As you can clearly see, I’ve just summoned this piece of paper- Now, it’s not on par with many of your creations, of course, but I’m sure you understand my point. Just last week, you summoned me a new Rubik’s Cube. Don’t you remember?”
Virgil snorted from across the room, and Roman sighed. “Yes, Specs, I- I remember. I meant that metaphorically.”
“That was not a metaphor. According to Oxford Languages Dictionary, a metaphor is 'a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable.' Would you like an example?”
“Not now, Logan. I’ll be taking my leave-”
“Aw,” Patton interrupted, “why not stay? You’ve spent so much time up in your room- Now, I know sometimes we need our alone time, but spending some time with your famILY won’t kill ya!”
“Did someone say kill?” came Remus’ shrill, excited voice from by the lamp where he’d just appeared.
“Not that kind of kill!” Patton rushed, “there will be absolutely no killing on my watch, mister!” Remus put his hands on his hips and blew a raspberry at that, exaggeratedly pouting at him.
“You’re no fun,” he replied. “Nothing wrong with a little casual murder to pass the time! Everyone dies sometime, might as well make it exciting.” Patton grimaced as Virgil’s eyes went wide and he groaned.
“...Everyone dies sometime. We are going to die. Thomas is going to die. Death is inevitable,” Virgil mumbled shakily, though it was still quite loud once the tempest tongue kicked in. He put his hands in his hair, but before he could pull at it, Patton led his hands away.
“Now Remus, that may be true, but there’s no need to dwell on it, especially when you know it will upset Virgil,” Logan said with a strict tone.
“Oh oh, I wonder who’ll go first when Thomas dies? Think it’ll be all at once, or one by one? I vote Roman-”
“Won’t you just shut up?” Roman spoke up, voice raised. “You’re harming Virgil and you know it. Keep your ideas in your side of the Mindscape; We don’t want them here.” His fists balled up as he glared at his brother. Oh, what he’d give to be able to walk up to him, to punch him square in the jaw. He’d love to unsheathe his sword and bury it right in his fucking stomach, to watch the emotions flicker through his eyes as they slowly went glassy and he collapsed to his knees, the blade continuing up through his skin like it was paper, the blood leaking through his clothing and pooling around him on the floor-
Roman blinked hard, brows furrowed. No one had responded to him yet, because it had only been a moment. What kind of thought was that? Certainly not one becoming of a prince. Was Remus messing with him somehow? Roman knew he could project thoughts into Thomas and the others’ heads, but Roman had never experienced it himself-- Why would Remus give him an intrusive thought right now, especially one so gruesome as to include his own gory death by Roman’s hands? He didn’t look like he had done anything, but he had to have, right? Roman didn’t come up with ideas like that. He was light creativity, he was good creativity!
Patton must’ve noticed his distress, as he quickly looked between the two. “Oooookay,” he began, “Remus is being a little inconsiderate of Virgil. And that isn’t okay! But that doesn’t mean we don’t want him at all. Everyone messes up from time to time!”
“But he’s doing it on purpose!” Roman exclaimed. He gestured his arms towards Remus and waved them incredulously. “I mean, look at him! He doesn’t even care!”
Remus didn’t respond, continuing to stand in his spot, smiling and unblinking. Janus cleared his throat, gathering their attention.
“I’m sure Remus just loves being talked about as if he isn’t here. Regardless, it’s hardly fair to criticize him for one incident that’s a result of his function as intrusive thoughts, especially considering that you’ve shown a pattern of worse behavior over the past… What, three years?” He looked towards Logan for confirmation.
“Yes, approximately that long, although that’s a misleading usage of the information. He’s improved over time,” Logan responded.
“Only if you consider his treatment of Virgil exclusively. Regardless, you've proved my point,” Janus said, sounding satisfied. “If it took Roman three years to warm up to Virgil, why does Remus only get a few months? Not to mention that he’s just being told that he’s unwanted and to leave, you've never experienced despite your actions, and which is preposterous notwithstanding.”
Virgil finally ripped his hands from Patton and covered his ears, shutting his eyes tightly.
“Shut up shut up shut up!” he said frantically. Patton bit his lip and looked around the room.
“Listen, usually I’d encourage a healthy family discussion, but now’s really not the time to be doing this-- Roman, please go to your room. Remus, I’m not mad at you, but I’d really appreciate it if you would go ahead and leave for the night, too.”
Roman stared at Patton for a moment, mouth agape and brows furrowed. “My room- Patton, I’m not five! This isn’t even my fault-”
“Don’t argue, Roman,” Logan cut him off, “Do as Patton said. We’ll discuss this more in-depth later.”
Roman gave a loud scoff as he trudged across the room and began making his way up the stairs. He gave one last glare to Remus, who’d finally begun to move, and then continued to his room, where he fell backwards onto his bed. He closed the door with a flick of his hand, and stared at the ceiling, letting out a resigned sigh as he reminisced. Why was everything so backwards nowadays, he wondered? When had the dastardly acts of his brother become the new norm, overshadowing his own heroism and creativity?
It wasn’t as if Roman could even do anything about it, either; Patton’s decisions on what was right and wrong was like the word of law in the Mindscape. Sure, Roman could challenge his thinking, but he hardly wanted a repeat of his… Frog incident. He couldn’t bear it if he distressed him that much again. All Roman could hope for was that one day, sooner rather than later, someone would either talk some sense into him, or he’d come to the realization himself that Remus was merely a parasite to their famILY.
For now, at least, Roman could dream.
‘Patton loves me just as much as the others. He’s a dad! Dads love all their children equally.‘
‘Even if it seems like it sometimes, no one really hates me- Well, besides Remus.’
‘...And even if they do, I can fix it.’
Even if it meant lying to himself.

Of Brothers and Bad Guys
Tumblr media
They become the bad guys. They are the snake in the garden and the back-stabbing duke, and far away, they know Anxiety is the darkness in Thomas’ mind when they can’t be. It is an idea that makes Duke cackle with delight, that even when unable to speak to their host, they still scare him.
(Once upon a time, Duke would have worried for Anxiety, alone and hated by the Light Sides, but now he simply laughs. A part of him, a part that perseveres even when the shadows attempt to tear it out, wonders if this is a change for better or worse.)
-
Once upon a time, Anxiety promises that everything will be okay. And Anxiety has never been a liar.
The story of how the snake, the duke, and the darkness find their happy ending.
Notes: This fic turned into really just platonic anxceitmus with a sprinkling of angst. A sprinkling.
I’m a liar.
I hope you enjoy, anon!
Warnings: Cursing, a bit of gore + disturbing imagery.
Also, some of the sides may appear unsympathetic here: they are not. They are human (or, well, sort of) and also children, and they make choices or do things they don’t quite understand or control. No one in this fic is a bad guy! That’s... kind of the whole point.
Ao3
The Mindscape splits when they are children.
Well, children in the loosest sense of the term, considering no one really knows how old they were, exactly. Janus thinks it was when Thomas was about thirteen, Remus cackles and names a different age every time, and Virgil refuses to answer the question, usually diverting their attention to something else. He’s good at that, Remus muses.
In the end, none of them quite remember when the Mindscape divided, or their age at the time, and for a very simple reason: Patton, who controls Thomas’ memories (and to some extent, their own) wants more than anything to forget it.
They just know the split was when they were small, small enough that the hand Remus — but he wasn’t Remus then, just Creativity — sets against the barrier between the halves is small, the nails not yet painted or jagged or covered in dirt. It is the hand of a child, the hand of a boy staring with horror across a rift in Thomas’ mind at his brother, his twin, his other half both figuratively and literally.
Creativity (not him, not the Green Creativity, a different boy wearing all reds and whites instead, his brother) looks horrified too, but Morality, with his hand over his mouth and fear in his eyes, takes his hand and pulls him away. The not-but-also-him-Creativity follows. Logic presses his palm against the barrier too, his mouth wide in shock, glasses askew. Morality turns and calls for him.
“Go,” Creativity (the bad half, the scary half, the dark half) hears Anxiety say behind him, sad and solemn and scared all at once, and after a moment Logic nods, and waves, and turns to follow Morality.
“What happened?” Deceit asks, fast and scared and loud. “What did he do?!”
“He didn’t mean to,” Anxiety says quietly, pulling Creativity (but is he Creativity? Who is Creativity? How can Thomas have two of them? Why isn’t he with his brother?) to his feet. Anxiety’s tug on him is gentle, but insistent, and soon Creativity-but-maybe-not finds himself trailing behind the other sides, his hand wrapped in Anxiety’s. “Morality has no idea what he’s doing, Dee, he’s got so much power and no idea how to control it.”
“He did this to me!” Deceit screams, gesturing to the yellow scales that have begun to emerge from his skin, the eye that looks more yellow every day, the pupil that’s already changing shape. “And now he’s shoved us into… into… here! Wherever this is!”
“The Dark Side,” Bad-Creativity (?) whispers, and Anxiety’s grip on his hand tightens, though he does not respond.
“Listen,” says Anxiety, who reaches out to grab Deceit’s hand as well, “it’s gonna be okay.”
“You don’t know that,” snaps Deceit, and Creativity-but-not-but-is-but-only-sorta can’t decide whether to laugh or cry, so he does both, tears streaking down his face even as a weak giggle escapes his throat.
“I do,” Anxiety answers, Anxiety who has always tried to care for and protect Thomas, and all of his sides, too. Kinda-Creativity understands, sort of, why he and Deceit were sent away (he supposes they had offended Morality’s sense of, well, morality) but it doesn’t make any sense that Anxiety would get sent with them. He wonders briefly if it’s some sort of trick, and then looks at Anxiety and sees the tears threatening to spill from his eyes, and knows it isn’t. Anxiety thinks he’s all secretive and strong, but King Creativity (he had a name, Kinda-Creativity knows, the only one with a real name like Thomas, but he can’t seem to catch it) had always been able to read him. Now, so can Kinda-Creativity.
“We have each other,” Anxiety continues, “and I believe in you, and I believe in us. It’s going to be okay.”
“You promise?” Deceit asks, his voice small.
“I promise,” Anxiety nods, and Kinda-Creativity is being hugged, all three of them wrapped together. He feels Deceit’s tears mixing with his own, and Anxiety’s soft grey sweatshirt brushing against his neck, and he is not alone. He is not King Creativity, not anymore, and he does not have his brother, but he is not alone.
It gives him hope.
Anxiety takes care of them after that; he is the only one who will. Deceit is angry all the time, constantly scheming — trying to pass through the barrier, trying to talk to the other sides, trying to contact Thomas in any way — and he forgets to eat. And sleep. And Kinda-Creativity is pretty sure he’s scratching at his scales a little too much.
As for him, well… He’s Creativity. Kinda. But so is his brother. He can’t call himself that anymore, not really.
He thinks about ‘King’, but that isn’t right either. That was him, yes, but that was really all of Creativity, him and his red-white brother both. Prince feels wrong, more suited to the other half of him.
He considers others. They don’t feel right.
He goes to the barrier. He looks for his brother. He does not find him.
But apparently he isn’t taking care of himself as well as Anxiety would like, either, because he finds himself at the kitchen table with Deceit, grilled cheese and tomato soup shoved in front of them, glasses of water besides them, and Anxiety glaring at them menacingly from the other side of the counter.
“Eat,” he says.
They do.
As for Anxiety, well, he knows the other side goes to the barrier sometimes. He doesn’t know why. Kinda-Creativity hears him crying once, from the couch, when he’s pretty sure Anxiety thought the rest of them were asleep. He purposefully steps on the creaky part of the stairs, and Anxiety sits up, scrubbing at his eyes, until he looks almost normal. “Creativity?” he says, trying for a smile. “What’s up, bud?”
“I’m hungry,” Kinda-Creativity says, though he isn’t.
“Okay,” Anxiety nods. He’s smaller than Kinda-Creativity, is smaller than all of them as far as he can tell, but he still manages to look so old. “Let’s get you some toast.”
“With blood as jam!” Kinda-Creativity exclaims, but Anxiety laughs and shakes his head.
“How about regular butter and honey?” he asks, and smiles in the way that means he’s about to do some serious mischief. “You’ll never believe where honey comes from.”
Kinda-Creativity does believe, and torments Deceit with it for the next week. But Anxiety seems to forget why he was crying as they snicker together, and he thinks that’s good.
Anxiety takes care of them, guards and protects Deceit and Kinda-Creativity in the way he used to do for all of the sides.
But sometimes, he forgets to take care of himself, too. So Kinda-Creativity does it for him, makes sure Anxiety eats and drinks water and sleeps, even if these things aren’t technically necessary for them to survive. This is what Anxiety does for them, so it must be good.
And when Anxiety hears about his King dilemma and the list of titles Kinda-Creativity is considering, he says offhandedly, “Aren’t dukes always the evil bad guys in every story? That always seemed unfair.”
“And it sounds like dookie,” Deceit snickers from where Anxiety is tending to the growing scales, and the long scratch down his face.
“Well, I’m not a bad guy,” Kinda-Creativity says, “but I like the idea of being a duke-ie.”
He grins, and so do the other sides.
He’s Duke after that, and Anxiety and Deceit adjust to the new name quickly. Even his door in the hallway of the Dark Side (for that is what they have begun to call them, the Dark Side and the Light Side, names of Duke’s creation) changes to have his new name etched across it.
They are not evil. He knows that, and he knows Dee and Anx know it too.
He’s gonna prove the Light Sides wrong, and he’s not gonna do it as a King, or as a Prince, but as a Duke.
(Besides, Dee’s joke makes him laugh every time.)
One day, Anxiety finds a way across the barrier.
He says there’s a door. Duke and Deceit can’t see it, no matter how many times Anxiety tries to show them, but they see the results: Thomas listens to Anxiety now, knows of him and about him, and his influence is obvious.
Duke wonders how Morality feels about that. The thought makes him snicker with delight.
“Morality isn’t bad,” Anxiety has always insisted, “he doesn’t understand what he’s done. I’m sure he didn’t mean to.” Duke isn’t sure he believes that, but he trusts Anx, and so he doesn’t argue.
It is Anxiety’s belief in the Light Sides that leads neither Duke nor Deceit to think him crossing over to speak with both them and Thomas is a bad idea. When Anxiety returns one day and punches the table with a sickening crack that indicates something has broken (Duke hopes it is the table, even as he thinks about how cool broken bones are), eyes glowing black and fist coated in darkness, both realize that might not have been an entirely correct assumption.
“Anx?” says Dee, stepping forwards, and Anxiety turns. For a horrible, brief second, Duke thinks he’s going to hurt them, the ideas crawling into his mind once again that remind him he is something other than Creativity, something darker, something more intrusive.
Anxiety merely moves forwards, pulling both of them into a hug, the darkness around his fingers vanishing as he clings to his family.
“Yo, Anxie,” Duke mutters, far more scared than he feels like letting on, “what happened?”
“You need to hide yourselves,” says Anxiety after a moment, arms dropping to his sides as he steps away.
“What?” Duke exchanges looks with Deceit, who looks equally confused.
“Dee, you can tell Thomas the two of you don’t exist.” Anxiety’s normal grey sweatshirt is streaked with black, a darkness that covers the whole surface with only hints of the grey poking through. As Duke watches in horrified fascination, the grey surfaces in lines, crossing the sweatshirt. “Listen to me, okay, because if you don’t, things are gonna be bad.”
“What’s happening to you?” Deceit asks slowly, staring at Anxiety’s face, where darkness is beginning to drip from his eyes, coating his cheeks. “Anx-”
“Deceit, listen to me!” Anxiety snaps, and his voice reverberates in a way Duke has never heard before. Even he seems shocked, his hand leaping to his mouth, but when the moment passes, Anxiety only looks more determined.
“We’re the Dark Sides to them,” he says, spreading his arms as if to show his new outfit. “The bad guys. And Thomas believes the others, of course he does, and the moment he saw me he decided I was bad, too.”
“You look like a monster,” Duke tells him, blunt and unfiltered as always, and Anxiety just laughs.
“I know,” he whispers, his hair straightening and darkening, falling over his eyes. “And I can’t let it happen to you.” He turns to Deceit, a plea in his storm-clouded eyes. “Hide yourselves. The barrier began to break when I crossed it, so make sure Thomas can’t find you unless he can accept you for who you are. Not you two, not any of the others on this side of the Mindscape.” He gestures to Deceit. “Look what happened the last time Morality profiled one of us. We can’t risk Thomas changing you forever.”
“But what will happen to you?” Dee asks, tears already leaking from his human eye. “We need you, Anx! You’re… you’re our brother, you’re supposed to take care of us!”
“You don’t,” Anxiety tells them, the darkness leaking from his eyes almost like tears of his own . “And I’m not. You’re going to be okay, alright?” He hesitates, and sighs. “I’m going to go back over there, try and get Thomas to listen to me, to… He knows about me now.”
“You’re leaving us,” Duke says, and Anxiety just nods. The room looks darker, now, especially around Anxiety, and he realizes distantly that the shadows are coming from the other side, like paint dripping from a canvas, like blood dripping from a wound.
“I have to,” he answers simply. “Dee, please.”
“That’s not okay,” Duke snaps, stepping towards him. “You promised everything would be okay, and that’s about as okay as tearing out our hearts with your bare hands and feeding them to kids, that’s like frying up our eyes with them still in our skulls, that’s like killing us!”
“I’m sorry,” Anx whispers, though he is already backing away. “I’m so sorry, Du. I love you guys, okay? I love you so much. And I’m so, so sorry.” He looks past Duke then, at Deceit. “Do it, Dee.”
The final words sound like thunder, and before Duke knows it, Anxiety is sinking out, Deceit snapping his fingers in a quick, panicked motion, and a feeling of icy numbness washes over him, like he’s been erased.
“Why would you do that?!” he screams, turning on Deceit, who looks far more scared now, snapping over and over, though nothing happens, nothing is fixed.
“I didn’t mean to!” Dee cries, and the shadows that he’d seen dripping off Anxiety swarm up both of them, changing them.
Anxiety never returns. But Duke and Deceit are alone after that, alone with the other sides who hide in the dark, the ones who were never their friend, not like Anxiety was.
Anxiety’s room is still in their side of the Mindscape, but it’s closer to the barrier now, almost phased between the two halves, and whenever Deceit and Duke try to enter or open the door, they’re thrown back into the common room with a noise like thunder. They don’t see Anxiety for years, after that, though they can sense his presence and they know he affects Thomas, influencing his decisions in ways the old Anxiety never would have condoned.
In the end, Anxiety’s sacrifice doesn’t mean anything at all. The other two are changed far less dramatically, but they are changed, and no longer have their friend, their brother, to keep them good.
Thomas begins making his videos a few years later, of his Light Sides, and of Anxiety too, who appears in one of the early episodes and never leaves. Duke and Deceit (though they have names, now, Remus and Janus, just like all the other sides have names) know of Sanders Sides, of course, for every side knows of such an important thing in Thomas’ life, and when Anxiety appears Remus rages. Thomas has only nightmares that night, full of awful things happening to his friends and failure and a grey sweatshirt dripping with darkness.
Janus, meanwhile, is quiet, the sort of silence that makes Remus think of the word plotting, as he watches the series progress and adjusts his new yellow gloves with a decisive hum. Remus does not ask about it, for he knows that Janus will likely include him in any plans he might make, and although he is impulsive and loud and spontaneous, Thomas’ Intrusive Thoughts can also be very, very patient.
The Dark Side is still full of shadows, ones that remain perfectly still and normal on most days, and that writhe and pulse and move about on others. They are tinged with the darkness now, him and Janus both, and sometimes Remus sees it seeping from under the door of Anxiety’s room, the shadows unable to fully escape but attempting to do so anyways.
“Only Thomas could get into that room,” Janus tells him when Remus starts planning to break the door down one day. “It’s not possible.”
Remus grumbles and eventually moves on to his next idea, for he never expects Thomas to actually need to enter Anxiety’s room.
When Anxiety (no, Virgil, he calls himself Virgil now, and how did they not know that?) ducks out, or tries to, everything changes. He’s accepted, by both halves of Thomas’ mind, and suddenly the divide between them seems weaker than it ever has been. Janus and Remus suddenly find themselves able to influence Thomas far more, the power that had hidden them weakened with Virgil’s newfound famILY.
(Make sure Thomas can’t find you unless he can accept you for who you are, Virgil had told them, so long ago. Thomas trusts Anxiety, now. He can trust them, too.)
It takes months, (far too many, in Remus’ opinion) but Thomas grows to know every facet of himself, including Janus and Remus. Virgil meets them once again, and he is angry and scared, and Remus’ heart breaks once more and reforms cold and angry.
It takes even more time, but eventually the barriers between the Mindscape dissolve, Remus and Janus’ rooms are suddenly along the same corridor as the so-called ‘Light Sides’, they have movie nights and meals and quiet mornings with the others, they are accepted by Thomas. They are no longer alone.
And so, one day, Remus finds himself walking down the stairs (for their home in the Mindscape, or the bottom floor, at least, mirrors Thomas’ own home nearly perfectly) and sees Virgil alone in the living room, doing something on his phone. The other side spots him, scrambles to his feet, is about to sink out, and something in Remus’ chest screams.
“We need to talk,” he says, uncharacteristically serious, and the contrast between the words and Remus’ usual personality has Virgil pause long enough for Remus to make it to the couch, perching on the armrest.
“I’m not gonna yell at you,” he tells Virgil, when the other side still looks to be on the verge (ha, verge! Patton would like that one) of sinking out. “Well, I might. I’m very mad. I just want to know why, okay? You left us, and you came over here, and…”
“I know,” Virgil sighs finally, sitting on the other arm rest, legs dangling off the side. The other side won’t make eye contact with Remus, instead glancing down at his short, bitten nails, but still, there is something in his voice that is purely Anxiety, no matter how much his body language isn’t. Or is, for though his behavior seems strange to Remus’ idea of the Anxiety he knew, it is quite typical of anxiety, lowercase edition. “I’m sorry.”
“You’re sorry?” he blurts out, and he can feel the shadows seeping out from under his fingers, crawling across the couch, inching their way towards Virgil. For his part, the literal embodiment of Thomas’ fears and worries doesn’t seem scared by the darkness approaching him, only concerned, and so, so apologetic.
He hates that look on the other side’s face, and he’s pretty sure Virgil knows it.
“You were more of a brother to me than my own brother ever was!” Remus tells him, voice approaching what can only be called screeching. “And then you just… You left, to try and help us, I get that, but then when everything was okay again, you chose him.”
“Yeah,” Virgil says, and reaches out to touch one of the shadows. It curls around his fingers, sinking into his skin, and he winces. “I thought I was protecting you from… this.”
“Well, you failed,” he snaps, merciless, cold.
“I know,” the other side nods, and Remus realizes his hands are shaking, that he-who-was-Anxiety is more nervous than he has ever seen him. “I am so, so sorry, Re, I…”
“It hurt, when you left,” Remus says after a moment, staring up at the ceiling and counting the cracks. “It was like you’d torn out our hearts and dumped gasoline all over them and set them on fire and then shoved them back into our chests. Spla-woosh.”
“I fucked up,” Virgil says bluntly, and then hesitates. When he speaks again, his voice is far quieter, as if it could shatter at any loud noise. “I didn’t leave you for Ro, though. You’re my brother, too, Remus, or you were, I guess, and I… You’re always going to be important to me, okay? It’s not okay that I left, but I did think I was doing the right thing, and I never meant to choose the Light Sides over you guys, or anything like that. If I had known I had a choice, I would have chosen you, no matter what. And… I really am sorry.”
“...Stop saying you’re sorry,” Remus grumbles finally, breaking the silence that has settled between them after Virgil’s words. It is the closest to an admission of forgiveness Virgil will get, and they both know it. “Gotta save some for Jan, right?”
“I don’t think it’s possible to run out of apologies,” Virgil tells him, a hint of a grin playing at his lips. “And I am.”
“Yeah, I got that,” he rolls his eyes, and opens his arms wide, twisting so both of his muddy boots are on the couch cushions and he’s facing Virgil fully. “C’mere, emo nightmare.”
Virgil is staring at the stairs again, though, and Remus turns to look at them too, his neck cracking sickeningly as he does. Janus is there, his expression unreadable.
“I’m so sorry,” Virgil says once more, and Remus barely sees Janus move, only realizes he has when the other side collides with Virgil, tugging him into a hug, and using his extra arms to pull Remus in as well.
The hug isn’t exactly soft (Remus is still wearing his morningstar, and Virgil is all sharp edges) or warm (they’ve always tended more towards the cold, the two of them and Janus) or particularly nice (they are a jumbled mass of sides, and there’s a few too many arms in the equation for it to be entirely comfortable) but it is perfect, all the same.
These are Remus’ brothers, no matter what has happened between them. They have been for ages, for longer than they have been not, since he was created from the ashes of Creativity and since he lost his other half to the sides that now have accepted Remus, too. They always will be, he thinks, with Janus’ scales smooth against his cheek and Virgil’s hair tickling his neck.
He wouldn’t change that for the world.
The shadows don’t vanish immediately, or even fully. Thomas’ Mindscape reforms once more, and instead of darkness and light, they coexist in shades of grey. There are no Dark Sides anymore, and there are no Light Sides. There are just the different parts of Thomas, coexisting.
They are no longer the bad guys, the three who had been in the dark; there are no bad guys, anymore, and perhaps there never really were. There are just Remus and Janus and Virgil, (and the other sides too, Remus supposes) and they are the snake and the duke and the darkness, but that does not make them Dark Sides or villains or bad guys.
They are simply family, a family that found itself in the shadows. And Remus thinks — no, Remus knows — that with them by his side, his best friends and brethren and brothers, he can do anything.
Virgil, in the end, was right.
Everything turns out okay.

I think Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Dark Nights Metal (that title is so fucking long... Hate comic books) is my favorite Duke Thomas story. I'm not used to him being in stories and being the center of the story, I feel like in big casts like Batman or Outsiders, he can get lost in the ensemble. It feels like he hadn't got any story focus since, like, 2017? 2018?
Anyway, it works SO well. Duke's light powers allowing him to see the past, being used to remind him of what he lost, that's so effective! And him being the Signal, the light of hope in the literal dark multiverse, it calls back to Batman and the Signal and what Duke says about his mother and lighthouses and being a beacon of hope. I could read a whole story about an apocalypse story with a main character with these powers!
I loved the final Justice League (especially Nightwing and Hawkgirl with her pet husband), vs the draconic justice league, it was a cool fight where how predictable it was made me more hyped.
Also, it was just a good finale to the dark multiverse in general? It felt so final, yet so hopeful. I hope we get to see more of the Final Knight soon

Top five powers/skill sets
sorry for the late answer things have been Hectic lately!!
Joey Wilson's Bodyjacking: I just love this power so much?? It's extremely useful and incredibly unique, and the writers actually play around with it quite a bit, establishing rules such as 'if the person is still conscious they can still talk and think for themselves, if not Joey can use their body to talk', which is just really Neat. The visuals of his eyes going black when he uses it is also really cool.
Duke Thomas's Light Manipulation: LOVE this power and DESPERATELY want it to be explored more. Light Manipulation isn't terribly unique, but the way they have Duke use it IS. The fact that they went out of their way to show that Duke uses it to give himself short-term premonition and see into the past is absolutely fantastic and a really creative use of the power! I also think that the invisibility aspect, while not terribly original, is really cool. I'm kinda eh on his shadow manipulation powers because they're even more underdeveloped and seem to have fewer uses, and I think the fact that he apparently has a healing factor now is just plain stupid, but I REALLY like his light powers and they were part of the reason for me getting into him to begin with.
Green Lantern Ring: would probably be higher if I actually, like. knew any Lantern lore? That also goes for the other kinds of Lantern powers, because I know literally Nothing about them. But I think the idea of a ring that can create anything as long as the owner has enough willpower and imagination is awesome! I was unimpressed by it for the longest part because from what I've seen it never felt like they were used terribly creatively, but after reading Far Sector, specifically the part where Jo uses it to enter Atville, I really hope that this impression is wrong and that more unique usages like that happen!
Jaime Reyes' Scarab/Khaji Da: I'm... not entirely sure this counts as a superpower? Either way I really adore how overpowered Jaime is. The feats Jaime pulls off over the course of his 06 solo alone are absolutely amazing (my favourite being the time he managed to be in three places basically at once to confuse the Reach), and I like how the series handles the fact that he's so overpowered. Specifically, they don't use it as a get-out-of-problems free card, and instead have it CREATE problems while Jaime learns how to deal with his powers, befriend Khaji Da, and struggle with how scared he is of having this much power. A powerset that manages to both exhibit the 'fuck yeah that's awesome!' response I should get from superheroes, while still being an interesting opportunity for story and character progression.
Misfit's Teleportation: Charlie is a very minor character who basically only appeared in Birds of Prey, but I'm fond of her and I really like her power! Teleportation is fairly standard as far as superhero/villain powers go, but I really like how they play it with her. The implication that it's actually a type of magic is interesting, even if it never went anywhere, and I enjoy the fact that it's blatantly overpowered, having unlimited range and unlimited usage, with pretty much the only caveat being that Charlie cannot teleport other people with her. I also like how they factored this into her backstory and later plot.

Remus’ Book Haul  💚
Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige
The Wizard of Oz is known for its magical lands, and Dorothy is the archetype of the innocent, pure-hearted heroine. However, in this novel, set years after Dorothy’s original escapade through Oz, she is now the villain. Oz is dangerous and creepy and sort of scary. I think Remus would really like the twist on a lovely classic into something dark and frightening. This story subverts the “innocence” depicted in the original through this darker atmosphere, as well as turning Dorothy into a tyrant and sexualized figure (as sexuality is typically seen as the inverse of innocence, but that’s a discussion for another day). The main character, furthermore, is less an ideal, as Dorothy embodied in the original, and takes on a more human role. Amy has dealt with hardships such as bullying and abuse even before she’s sucked away by the tornado. She’s accompanied a punk goth munchkin, Indigo, and a rat, Star--Star possibly a subversion to typical heroine animal companions, such as Dorothy’s dog Toto. Without spoiling anything, I will say that this story is ruthless. It throws the reality of what is now Oz at you and does not wait for anything. Life is scary, and this story is ready to show it. Remus would definitely appreciate the honesty this story presents.
Lord of the Flies by William Golding
If you don’t know anything about this book, I will sum it up in one sentence for you: school boys go insane when unsupervised. Honestly, that’s something most of us have observed first-hand, so what’s the big deal, right? There are a lot of deeper meanings to the book--meanings that I’m actually pretty interested in, and I think Remus would be too--but, at the core of it, Remus would mostly like reading the insanity of it all. While its commentary on law and civilization seems more up Janus ‘We Live In A Society’ Sanders’ alley, anarchy definitely seems up Remus’. What is life without those pesky restrictions to distract him? This book is said to be an allegory for the Bible and, while alluding to the Bible is not in short supply in media, it does remind me of Forbidden Fruit and the Creativity split coming largely from Thomas’ Catholic upbringing. Thus, the larger question brought on by this book seems pretty relevant to Remus: is humanity innately good or evil? Remus is dubbed the evil half. Everything he does is labeled so. But, as explored in DWIT, his thoughts do not necessarily make Thomas a bad person. The extreme split between good and evil in this book, thus, may be a point of interest in regards to the split of the twins.
Grimm’s Complete Fairy Tales by the Brothers Grimm
While his brother is more a Disney guy, Remus would probably like the source material. In case you don’t know much about Grimm’s, it’s a volume of fairy tales that the brothers, Wilhelm and Jacob, collected and copied from oral tradition around the German area. This collection is where many Disney stories, and plenty of adaptations, originate from. However, these versions were not all kid-friendly, filled with violence, sex, abuse, incest, and much more. Remus appreciates the uncensored and doesn’t shy away from the taboo. I think he would like understanding where the stories come from and seeing the unsugar-coated version of it all.
Macbeth by William Shakespeare
*Warning: Spoilers for Macbeth
I figure Remus could enjoy Shakespeare’s comedies/romances, with their crude humor and baffling tales, and, vice versus, Roman would like tragedies with their dramatic soliloquies and riveting stories. However, I have decided that, overall, Remus would probably favor tragedies. They’re full of violence and murder, and even the tragedies have a decent amount of dick jokes. Thus, I have blessed Remus’ haul with my favorite play--not just because it’s my favorite, though. As you can probably tell by the beautiful cover, or if you’ve read it before, Macbeth has to do with royalty--specifically regicide. What an interesting theme for our mace-wielding Duke who literally took out his brother, a so-called Prince, in the first two seconds we knew him. While possibly the biggest theme to this story is the ambition which drives this regicide, the theme I believe Remus would find most interesting is fate. Macbeth is told he is to one day become king, thus setting into motion the chain of events in which Macbeth and Lady Macbeth ensure it. The question is: would Macbeth have ever become king if they did not kill Duncan? Was Macbeth destined to fall to his own greed, ambition, and corrupt to a power-hungry tyrant? Much like The Lord of the Flies, this is another that grapples with the concept of the nature of evil. However, instead of focusing on the evil in mankind, Macbeth aims to understand the choices which we make. Are we bound to fate, and are certain people fated to be evil? Whatever Remus’ stance on his title as the “evil twin,” I believe this is a concept he would find interesting.
Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead translated by Raymond O. Faulkner
This book is really cool. It’s full of spells that help the dead go onto their eternal life. The Introduction by James P. Allen describes how this book was used in ancient Egypt, and documents important information about death and the afterlife as seen by ancient Egyptians. While death is often a darker subject in Western cultures, this book isn’t necessarily one of Remus’ “darker” pastimes. As a Creativity, Remus is curious about many things, and I think he would find interest in death in other cultures. This book is full of information and would probably keep Remus busy for hours and lead into a lot more research into the gods and rites described.

In light of recent events involving Damian in a certain DC Comic book, I have decided to revisit my proposed line up for a Teen Titans book that I would love to read. It’s going to be similar to the one I did before, but I’m going to try to go more in depth about it. If there’s any changes or additions you would make, please let me know. My knowledge on DC is limited. Especially now since I havent read them in awhile due to how annoyed they’ve made me lately.
Enjoy!

Maya Ducard / Nobody
Suren Daga (He’s been staying at Carrie Kelly’s place since he’s had nowhere else to go)
Jon Kent / Super Boy
Kathy Branden / Beacon
This is the core team at the start of their tenure together. There really isn’t any designated leader among them. Instead, they opt for a rotating system where a leader is chosen for specific missions. For example, Maya be more suitable to lead a stealth mission than Superboy.
I know he would get brought up, by Colin isn’t included because I know nothing about him and haven’t read any of the stories he’s been in. I recognized that he’s popular among some of the fans, but I wanted this list to be as true to me as possible.
Team Mother
Talia Al Ghul
In this iteration, everything about her that was written by Grant Morrison is wholly ignored. Never happened. Talia, while not as involved in Damian’s life as she would like to be due to her work, maintains a healthy relationship with her son. She takes on the responsibility of training the team in combat, language, espionage, tactics, and assassination. She also does the mission briefings for them.
For those who are familiar with the Young Justice cartoon, she’s pretty much Batman. the events of R:SoB still happens, so her relationship with Maya and Suren are still rocky at best. Maya goes out of her way to annoy her and Suren just doesn’t like her. But the course of the story will have moments where, while not being a fan of eachother, Talia would definitely go out of her way to protect Suren and Maya and they would do the same for her. Perhaps their relationship develops from antagonistic to just playful ribbing.
Den Brother
Duke Thomas
Duke takes on Talia’s responsibilities while she’s not around due to her job and/or missions. His tasks normally include being the team’s “therapist”. Talia recruited him for this because she correctly figured that the team would be more likely to warm up to him since he’s closer to them in age. It also helps that he’s a bit better when it comes to understanding emotional children. While not being licensed, he listens to their problems and help work them threw it. On occasion he will tag along on missions with them.
Future additions to the team
Mia “Maps” Mizoguchi and Olive Silverlock
(Anyone else remember in Robin War where Damian left supplies for the Gotham Academy kids and nothing came of it? I do.)
Maps- who is by far the most excited about the prospect of joining the team- she begins early training at the insistence of Damian, much to Talia’s chagrin. Talia tries to discourage her threw tough conditioning, but Maps perservere, showing her heart and that her desire to help people isn’t just surface level. Eventually she does join the team part-time.
Olive partakes in the practice concerning the usage of metahuman abilities in order to master her pyrokinesis. Duke and Kathy helps her navigate her training and slowly teaches her to be able to call upon her abilities without losing herself to the flames. I’m on the fence about having Olive join the team, so I’m open to suggestions on that front. I’m leaning more towards no, though.
Detective Chimp
Why not? He’s not really doing anything in the comics that is worthwhile. And I think his presence would add an air of brevity. He would be in charge of teaching the team proper investigative tactics. He even has a few tips and tricks up his sleeve that even the most seasoned detective wouldn’t be privy to.
Also I want to see him and Maps interact. Not to mention the potential for a fun side adventure with Detective Chimp and all of the pets teaming up.
Temp Join/Team-Ups
Batfamily
Not having the rest of the Batfamily interact with this team would be a crime in of itself. Nightwing, Red Hood, Red Robin, Orphan, Batgirl, Spoiler, Blue Bird, Batwoman, Batwing, and Alfred. I want to see all of them interact with the team. It doesn’t even have to be serious! Maybe Stephanie shows up with Cass and kicks all of the boys out and has a girls night with the female team. Or Jason regales the team with totally not made up stories about all of the times he saved Damian and all the favors that he owes him.
Harley Quinn
I don’t know exactly the circumstances that would make this work, but I think this would be a cool and fun crossover. They would just kinda run into each other and decide, for the sake of the mission, to work together to get the job done.
Justice League
I mean, they HAVE to have their “Now do you take us seriously” moment. It doesn’t have to be a situation where the League is brainwashed or anything. Maybe it’s just a test. Or a friendly competiton. Or an excuse to get Wonder Woman and Maya to interact and have a proper passing of the touch and make the Tiny Trinity a for sure thing.
Robzarro and Boyzarro
They obviously like hanging out with Jon, Kathy, and Maya. So them popping up every now and then should be a given. Also I kinda wanna see how Damian and Talia reacts to Robzarro. There is so much comedy potential there.
Base of operation
The Fortress of Attitude
The base has an official named that Talia had given it upon construction, but Superboy called it the Fortress of Attitude. The some of the team just started calling it that out of being easier to remember while others (read: Maya) does it because she wants to annoy Talia. It’s very sleek with cutting edge tech rivaling Batman’s own tech. But as the team gets more and more accommodated to the hideout, they start adding their own flairs (stickers, posters, beanbag chairs, animal dens, dolls, figurines, and magazines).
It’s equipped with a central computer that monitors the coming and going of the members, the registry, and mission files. The AI is programmed into the teams phones, offering the same protection to their personal phones that the foretress has. Using technology similar to the Watchtower and threw studying Beacon’s powers, they can beam themselves to the fortress whenever they please.
Main villains
Slade and the Hive Academy
I put Slade and not Deathstroke because I’m not really a fan of comic book Deathstroke. But Slade is Bad. Ass. Methodical. Calculating. Brilliant. Powerful. Coniving. He would make a perfect overarching villain for this team. I wouldn’t have him want Robin as his apprentice though. That can stay exclusive to the Teen Titans cartoon. In that place, he would just be the headmaster of the Hive Academy and use the team to test his students.
The Court of Owls
While theyre largely Batman’s villains, I feel they would meddle in the affairs of anyone they deem a significant annoyance. Their Talons would prove such a huge obstacle for this team to overcome. Of course it wouldn’t be the entire court after them, though. Just a small team that is assigned to keep an eye on them and steer them in the direction that best serves the Court.
 Blockbuster
I think 2 syndicates is enough for one title. Blockbuster is a departure from the cold, calculated, machinations of both Slade and the Court. He’s pretty much an immovable object that would be built up to be able to even withstand hits from Superboy.
Manchester Black
I think being trapped inside of a cow would make anyone thirsty for revenge. Also, a cow that is hell bent on revenge could be both terrifying and fun to read. No one is going to punch a cow, so the team would have to think of other tactics to take him down. Maybe Detective Chimp and the pets would have a hand in bringing him down!
I literally typed this out while working off of 3 hours of sleep the previous night and it is currently 12:37AM. That’s the excuse I’m going to go with if something is wrong here. I would want to include more villains that challenge the team both philosophically, physically, and mentally. But the longer I work on this, the more I go blank. So I’m putting a pin in this here.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, feel free to leave them! This is my own personal take on what I would like to see from a hypothetical Teen Titans/Young Justice book.

“Nobody’s perfect... Except for Thomas!” Patton, Selfishness vs Selflessness
Okay yall I want to talk about Patton’s role in the light sides for a second.
I’ve been thinking about this for a while. I started thinking about this more specifically since Can Lying Be Good, but after watching Dealing with INTRUSIVE THOUGHTS, I’ve got even more evidence to add to my analysis/theories.
First off, I think Patton is irrefutably the ‘leader’ of the light sides. As it stands now, Morality (Patton) is absolutely the driving force in Thomas’ psyche. Patton holds a large amount of control that leads to some, shall we say, problematic results. A lot of stuff has gone down in the last few episodes, so I’ll try and break it down under the cut.
I first started thinking about Patton’s role of power in Can Lying Be Good right after Deceit revealed himself.
Deceit chose to disguise himself as Patton, rather than any other side, for a reason. The other sides trust Patton completely, and that allowed Deceit to do suggest all sorts of immoral things and still be listened to. Deceit!Patton had the authority to make himself the director instead of Roman and Thomas immediately agrees to this. Thomas doesn’t hesitate to agree that Patton should be allowed to be the one coordinating the other sides. Because when you think about it, Patton already does that?
Tumblr media
When Virgil, Logan, and Roman start bickering in Learning New Things About Ourselves, Patton takes the reins and forces everyone to have “-a little bit of not talking time!”, and hands everyone perfectly catered items to distract each of them and calm them down. Patton’s mediation works and momentarily each side plays with the object Patton gave them.
Tumblr media
Patton is also the first one to suggest puppets as a way to resolve Thomas’ issues.
Despite the fact that Logan vehemently disagrees with this and tries to get Thomas to listen to him, Virgil interjects to get Thomas to listen to Patton instead of Logan. All of the other sides proceed with this idea. Everyone becomes puppets like Patton suggested and sings while Logan continues to express his displeasure with this format of problem solving.
Tumblr media
Even more interesting stuff happens in Can Lying Be Good too.
Deceit also leaves almost immediately after the real Patton arrives. Deceit’s cover had already been blown and he was still cool as a cucumber… until Patton shows up. Then, quite suddenly, Deceit looks nervously off to the side and leaves as soon as the chance arrives. Deceit certainly seems to understand that he wasn’t going to get away with anything with Patton there.
Tumblr media
Now to be clear, I don’t think Patton was actually doing any of these things with any conscious intent. In fact, I think the fact that Patton is completely unaware of the power he holds over his fellow sides and over Thomas. I also don’t think Patton is at all trying to hurt Thomas. But that being said, I do think that because of some of Patton’s actions… he might be.
Let’s look at some interactions during Selfishness v. Selflessness.
Right off the bat Deceit pins himself against Patton. Sure, Deceit is trying to manipulate Roman right now, but Deceit understands that the two sides that will threaten his case the most are Thomas’ morality and logic. Logan is easy to isolate. Deceit doesn’t invite Logan, and once Logan is summoned, Deceit sends him away. I don’t think Deceit would have been able to get away with it if he tried to keep Patton away.
So, instead, Deceit plays it a little differently. Immediately Thomas trusts Patton to take control of the situation for him as Patton has done on many occasions.
Tumblr media
When Deceit calls Patton out for ‘manipulating’ the witness (Logan) by trying to bribe him, something very interesting happens. Virgil again interjects on Patton’s behalf. V: So he didn’t want to play by the rules of your game. Big deal! This whole thing was probably rigged anyway. It was set up by a liar! D: It takes a liar to know a liar.
Deceit glances over at Thomas after this. Deceit is calling Thomas out for lying to himself. Patton responds to Deceit earlier in this Selfishness v. Selflessness by saying “Nobody’s perfect…” then Patton hesitates and continues, “Except for Thomas! He loves his friends.”
That’s not true. It can’t be true. Because firstly, nobody is perfect. Secondly, Thomas wants to go to the callback, not his friend’s wedding. Deceit is correct when he says that Thomas “isn’t so innocent” (Selfishness v. Selflessness).
In fact, Patton must know that it can’t be true. But Patton wants it to be true. And what Patton wants matters a whole lot. Because Thomas wants to listen to what Patton wants. Deceit’s frustration is with the fact that Thomas can’t bring himself to do what he wants to do (skip the wedding), because he wants to be a good person more. Morality is more important to Thomas.
Tumblr media
Now, this brings me to Dealing With INTRUSIVE THOUGHTS. When Thomas asks Logan how the duke is his creativity if Roman is his creativity.
L: Because of your view of creativity and imagination as a purely good force. At a young age, you filed away products of your imagination as either welcomed or forbidden. This led to the development of two separate sides of your creativity T: Wait, so, my creativity split in two!? L: Into two parts during your development, yes.
Now, normally the dark sides are, well, different sides of Thomas. Deceit encompasses Thomas’ lies and to a degree, his selfishness/self-interest. And Virgil, Thomas’ anxiety. But there isn’t any other side who occupies what is technically the same job. Because it can be presumed, that Roman and Remus were supposed to be *one side.*
But because of Thomas’ black and white views on good and bad, or welcome and forbidden, they were split. The reason the duke even exists as a dark side is because of Thomas’ strict morality. The duke is the way he is because of Patton.
Tumblr media
Logan points out that Patton is being too strict in Dealing With INTRUSIVE THOUGHTS. Everyone, including Logan himself, is confused by this.
Patton’s firm grip on Thomas’ moral code, with the help of Virgil’s anxiety, was leading Thomas down a path of disaster in this episode. And it seems like Patton had no clue. Patton’s position of power in the sides and over Thomas’ psyche literally caused a side to split in two, but no one seemed to question this. That’s a whole lot! That’s a big thing!
Thomas didn’t break creativity into two, his morality did that. Patton did that.
Perhaps Patton’s influence went unnoticed by Logan and the others before because Patton wouldn’t knowingly hurt anyone. Patton only wants to do what’s right, after all, he is morality itself.
But that’s just a theory A GAME THEORY

Sander Sides Theory
This is me trying to prove the Rainbow/each side has a match theories with the new episode in mind. So yes, this will have *spoilers!*
*WARNING* this is really long! And I jump around a lot! Also, this theory is based off of other theories I've seen so I by not means take full credit! So uhhhh... enjoy!
♥️🖤💛💚💙💜
This is the conclusion I have come to:
Roman(red)=Remus(green)
Patton(blue)=Deceit(yellow)
Logan(indigo)=???(orange)
And Virgil
Virgil doesn't have an Other because he is his Other. The "Light" of Virgil would be Vigilance and the "Dark" would be Paranoia but he isn't just one of those. He was Paranoia when he was with the Others. He was introduced to the "Light" sides as Anxiety because he had broken off from the others/was making an effort to help Thomas. And now he is constantly trying to just be Vigilant and only protect Thomas. This is why when Logan almost calls Virgil Paranoid everyone gets uncomfortable. And when Roman almost calls him Paranoid and he switches it to Vigilant.
Remus foreshadowed in "Learning new things about ourselves" when Patton says, "People can be like a half-missing puzzle set, until we find the pieces things make more and more sense". Roman is a half-missing puzzle set, since he doesn't have his Other half, and now the Others are making more sense because we are finding more pieces. (I also think that entire episode was foreshadowing the Other sides but I'll get to that later)
Deciet is harder to peg. I mean, this theory was created because he was such a clear opposition to Patton from the start, but he is so much more morally (haha) grey. He truly wants to help. And he will do anything to make sure what he thinks is right for Thomas, gets heard. That's why he sent The Duke in the first place, he wanted to send the message that "transparency and honesty isn't always so great" (and being exposed to constant indecency will give them an appreciation for his silver tounge). Even though Logan really hates Deceit and is very adverse to lying Logan can "defeat" Deciet fairly easily. Also, as we saw with Remus and Roman, Remus was trying to prove that he was creativity. Deciet did the same thing with Patton, replacing him and trying to prove that he was Thomas's morality. Both of them are a part of, or extreme of that side. Although a lie is the opposite of a fact, Deciet itself is the act of lying, and knowing when to do so is a moral question.
So, this leaves the final color, Orange, as Logan's Other. I've seen some ideas floating around about Logan's Other side being Ignorance, Wrath or Apathy...but I really don't think it's those...I think that there are Other sides because of Thomas. Like with Remus, Creativity split because of how Thomas viewed Remus to be "bad" or extreme. I think the same happened with Patton and Deceit. Thomas saw lying as "bad" and self-preservation at Deceit's level as extreme, so he was taken out of morality. Virgil was never split. So Logan's Other must be some extreme or "bad" Logic that Thomas took out, which I don't really think is the case for Ignorance, Wrath, or Apathy. Although Virgil looked very uneasy when Logan was mentioning the seven deadly sins, so it could have some connection.
Whatever Logan's Other side is it must be very powerful, he seemed to handle Remus oddly very well...and Deceit tried to get rid of him because he know he could handle his arguments...Logan isn't perfect and something will come along and play to his weaknesses and it makes sense that it would be his Other. Also, he is very understanding of Virgil and knows that there is an explanation for the Others other than them just being evil, so it would be cool for his Other to seem very nice/morally grey in contrast to Remus.
I actually think that accepting the Others, like Virgil was accepted, and trying to work with them is the key to help Thomas. In the episode "Learning new things about ourselves" (odd title for the topic it discussed, isnt it?) Roman says "Sometimes the problems at play are not all plain to see" like the Other sides not showing themselves "So we lash out at our loved ones, disregarding our bonsanctity" loved ones like a brother, and not getting along with the Other sides calling them "dark" and not accepting them peacefully. Then Patton says "There are several sides to us that may seem abstract at first" he literally says sides....come on..."until we discover where everything fits" call back to the episode Fitting In where Virgil felt like he didn't belong in the group because he was an Other side. "People can be like a half-missing puzzle set as we find the pieces things make more and more sense" as I said before this is foreshadowing Remus. (Also, this song is about Logan accepting himself, while beforehand they were talking about Thomas feeling bad...and I see how it connects....but Patton when on this whole tanget about missing pieces first....I can kinds see how Logan thought it was irrelevant to the convorsation...Anyway, back to the song.)
So then a little later Patton says "Life without rainy days is incomplete" and "Rain is a nessicary piece of the puzzle" what if rain is like the Other sides, and they are incomplete without them. Then later Virgil says "Sometimes love is enough" This is what the sides need to stop the inner turmoil. "In time we'll find where everything fits" That video was a lot of Logan not understanding, and I think that it's chalk full of foreshadowing for what his Other side could be, but it's still unclear to me... There was a lot of emphasis on jokes, and foolishness, so that could be apart of it.
So that's it! Hope you liked my theory! I know I missed something in here so I may comment on this later. If you have any suggestions for this theory leave em down below!

New vid rambly thoughts
I have to say the funniest part of the name reveal is everyone (myself included) trying desperatly to fit remus into their Aus. Equally as funny is Remy (sleep) becoming either a version of remus that turned good or people trying to rename him. Idk if I'll ever put remus in a fic but I'm gonna make remys middle name be Remy cause cool people go by their middle name till a garbage man makes them disown the name entirely.
Honestly tho I love all you creators who are doing your best and I'm sorry the scary leaf man set fire to parts of your intricate stories. You're doing great sweetie and if you wanna keep him out fricken do it.
Honestly I deal with intrusive thoughts on the reg and as nasty as remus is I low key love him. Like he's basically a cryptid doing a cartoon villian tiptoe around the mind tapping his nails on things like an asmr YouTuber as he comps ominously on deorderant. Like I get and sympathize with those who can't deal with him in fics. I know middle school me would not be able to deal. However I feel like he could work as a good cutaway gag for some fics were he's just being slightly concerning and just makin vaguely silly alibiet disturbing imagery. Pats making breakfast and he's in the upper cabinet filling the nails on the dismembered hand bottles of nail polish at the ready for him to do the hand's nails.
Also Roman!!!!!! My sweet boy!!! God some one give him a hug he was so left out of the vid that's gotta sting his ego. Like I get why he was MIA but first the callback now this.
Like I think it's fair to say that his arc that's been building for the last few episodes is really kicking into overdrive. The duke being brought to forefront implies that maybe Roman has in a way had to fight him off for awhile. Maybe he's turned some of his really grotesque ideas into better more productive concepts or images. (Also the dicotamy of prince vs duke is v good. In royal structors dukes are under the royal bloodline and have less overall power than a king in power. However dukes can often have more short-term power than a prince. In that over their smaller sections they get more say untill a crowned prince arrives to dictate other wise)
Also him comparing the duke to a fun house mirror where you see all you'd hate to be has some interesting implications.
So I don't think this is really a theory I think it's obvious but Deciet is the other side of Pattons coin. The side of morality that you don't wanna think about. And for the longest time I kinda assumed Virgil as anxiety was Romans opposite. Mainly because I link my anxiety with alot of my creativity good and bad. But since remus is Romans bro I think it's fair that maybe all of them had a sort of split at somepoint where their functions got too complicated and the mantle of negativity needed a specific side to hold it up. Patton and Deciet again are a good example of this maybe at some point Thomas needed to lie and this literally tore Patton up making the need for a distance from his very strict morality code and the idea that sometimes you need to lie.
But that really leaves logan and I think Virgil as anxiety might be his dark side. Which as a prinxiety shipper with a love for opposites attracting and rivals to friends to lovers with a forbidden lover angle eats away at my shipping fantasy. But maybe he's Logan's darkside. Unless they can have multiple which would make my anaology of coins moot (maybe they're like dice then??)
But I can't remember were I saw this but ages ago a post were some one said that anxiety is in it's own right an ignorance of logic/ and extreme perversion of logic.
And as much as I like that theory I did check over the older sandy sides to make sure I was remembering things correctly and it has caused a few bumps for this idea.
(Also seeing Thomas go from "ah the kitchen is like a friend I awkwardly ignore" to "look at how yummy hello fresh is" is the biggest growth of all)
Roman knew about remus and I'm pretty sure Patton knew about Deciet. And they were both aware of how they affected their jobs. And while logan knew of Virgil is seemed to be more of a passing knowledge and all three of them really had that sort of middle ground acquaintance. And anxiety is over heightened fear and can pervert all three of their main functions. (You can do things against your moral code to sedate the anxiety. You can be too anxious to create or be bold but anxiety can also be 'good for both)
Even in anxiety vs logic it didn't have the same feel as the other vs we've had as of late
Deciet attacks them all through Patton trying to muddy his name and function. He also attacks Patton specifically using the others. In the court episode while he used Roman and ended up hurting him that felt more like a by product. The main function of the case seemed to be dismantling the ideas patton as morality had instilled that Thomas was solely good. The purpose appeared to be even with use of the others make Patton fall first and the rest will follow. ( tho I personally still think he's not evil it is important to note that he has a point to make even if he's going about it wrong)
Virgil however doesn't seem to have an end goal. He's moment to moment, his goal is always changing and everytime he's attacked the others it's always been superficial and easy to move past Patton was a focus on how childish he is, Logan's too schedule strict and stresses him out. Roman's too out their and eager to put himself in a spotlight. His gripes with them aren't as organized as Deciets.
The duke also follows a similar pattern he took out Roman and in a way attempted to usurp his role. The reaction he got from Virgil and Patton again felt like a byproduct his goal seemed to be "take control of the creativity role and attack Roman to do so" heck he literally bashes him over the head to do so. (Intrusive thoughts can not be delicate they just bash their way in and ask questions later)
Not to mention whenever Virgil talks about the other sides it's "Deciet's friends" or "The others" always plural. So Virgil might just be an all encompassing opposition he's stumped them all were as the duke and Deciet while causing overall issues seem to mainly target one over them all.
Also like whoever had that theory that Virgil was a spy for Deciet and that's why he's always always slightly off with his impersonations because Virgil very quickly decided he didn't wanna do that.
I have more thoughts and I wish for the life of me I remember the original peeps that had the ideas I mentioned but any longer and my thumbs will give up. Also sorry if this is messy I just had to splat my ideas here and run ta ta for now I might add more later.

I think if i was a vigilante i'd have the abiity to control electric currents or something like thag honestly, just seems cool :00
can you tell i was reaching for things to hate im terribly neutral at almost everything lmao
🦋
Omg hey!!! I'm gonna ship u with 1 batfam member and 1 teen titans just bc I feel like I know who fits :
Batfam: Duke Thomas
Listen, he's the calmest guy there is; and you don't like being in cars? Well he has a super cool yellow motorbike calling your name! He's such a nerd and would be mesmerized when you talk about tarot cards and DND. And since he has light related powers, you two would be like "light and lightning"!!!
Teen Titans: Raven
You two have really similar vibes and she would probably also be into tarot cards! She would love to have a video game partner that wasn't as loud as Beast Boy or Cyborg, and you could go on candle shopping dates!! And again with the car thing; she literally TELEPORTS so you'd never have to step in another car again. And in all seriousness she's really calm and caring for the people she likes, and would definitely understand any problems you may face.

but like, yj true blood au
prepare for the weirdest thing i have written in weeks
there’s two parts of this: the bart centric one and then the batfam one
bart centric
everyone’s vaguely concerned that the small speedster never eats anything. wally was literally always eating, even now that he’s retired. plus, this kid is tiny and doesn’t seem like he’s growing or anything?
so at some point, the team all goes out. and barbara’s like yeah guys get whatever you want, it’s on me. and bart’s like oh cool, and he orders a bottle of b negative.
and barbara’s debating whether to spend the forty bucks and watch this child struggle to drink nasty fake blood, or just tell him fuck no you’re not doing that for a prank. and she decides to let it slide and some of the other kids at the table are like dude you shouldn’t do that batgirl’s paying and some of the others are like dude what if there are like, actual vampires here that get offended when you can’t down that shit.
but when the drinks come, bart’s fangs come out and he downs the bottle of blood. and everyone’s like WHAT THE FUCK how did we not know about this? and he’s like i never mentioned it but i never tried to hide it? come on guys i wasn’t subtle. and jaime’s like how did i not notice this and also oh my god i’m b negative wtf
“i’ll come out of the closet and the coffin at the same time, i’m a gay vampire” and everyone’s like okay and then someone awkwardly asks how old he is and bart tries to pretend that he’s thousands of years old and he met all of them in the future and jaime’s like uh no there’s no way, and then bart blushes and he’s like “i’m actually sixteen” because he was turned when he was fourteen and it’s been two years since then. and everyone’s like oh okay alright this isn’t weird at all. (and jaime’s just thinking about how it’s probably less weird for his fifteen year old ass to be crushing on bart now that he knows he’s actually sixteen, right? someone validate jaime’s feelings okay)
babs and tim both try to be cool about it because bruce and alfred are both vamps (at 117 and 223 respectively) but this guy’s a baby and even though he’s good at hiding it because he’s bart and he’s good at this lying thing, he doesn’t really know HOW to be a vampire for various reasons. one being he’s just that young, the second being his maker is the Worst (it’s eobard thawne (who is 578 but that’s not relevant) and he only chose to turn bart because he’s the flash’s grandson and he wanted to get at the flash by putting his bloodline under his dominion and also kind of ending it because dawn and don are both dead and bart was the only grandchild) and bart is eventually able to run away and finds himself with nathaniel, working on the plan to get back to the past.
other tidbits
one time bart definitely compels garfield to turn into a chicken during a team meeting or something and while it’s hilarious, it also comes with a discussion about consent and no-nos of vampire powers and previously moded jaime doesn’t talk to him for a week afterwards.
somehow thawne realizes that he was bart’s maker and shit goes down, because in case you’re not familiar with true blood lore, the maker bond is a very strong thing in this universe and the maker can compel their children to do shit so thawne realizing he has that sort of power over the flash’s grandson/sidekick has... ill effects.
batfam vamp sort of things
alfred was turned when he was 72 years old (in 1865). in the 1870s he crosses the pond over to america and takes a job with the waynes as their butler. in 1899, bruce is born and in 1907 thomas and martha are killed.
bruce leaves to become a super awesome warrior man overseas in 1916. in 1924, he shows up to wayne manor almost dead at 25 years old, and alfred makes the decision to turn him instead of letting him die.
they keep mainly to themselves for the rest of the 20th century, and batman becomes a legendary figure in gotham.
in 2007, bruce takes in dick grayson and dick becomes robin. bruce drops the vampire bomb as soon as he drops the batman bomb, and dick immediately decides that vampires are the Coolest and he wants to be one.
he realizes later that’s not the case, and he doesn’t know if he would ever want that.
in 2008, vampires come out of the coffin, and bruce does too because it’s kind of obvious at this point. he has been keeping up this act for about a century.
barbara is decidedly against the vampire thing and would never want to turn. she was as certain of that in 2012 when she became batgirl as she is now.
jason todd becomes robin 2013, tries to get bruce to turn him a ton (even though he’s only 14 and turning that young is awful, just ask bart allen)
he dies at age 16 in 2015, and the al ghuls don’t give a choice. he’s reborn then, and he isn’t certain that he wants to be anymore.
tim drake becomes robin a bit after that, and is just as excited about the vampire thing as jason was. he becomes less excited once he meets red hood.
stephanie thinks that being a vampire is overrated but definitely enjoys the raunchy romance novels, which she leaves around for bruce to awkwardly find and throw away.
cass cain was turned at age 12 to make her the “perfect warrior” and she comes to them scared and messed up and always stuck at least partially in the childhood she never really got.
content warning for this bullet: damian can’t exist as the physical child of bruce and talia (because they’re DOUBLE vampires okay, it was never going to happen) but ra’s found their closest living relatives, stole their reproductive materials at gun point basically and then found a surrogate. eventually damian, who was designed to be the perfect al ghul/wayne hybrid for ra’s’s nest finds bruce and the batfam through a “son of the batman” sort of plot.
i don’t know enough about duke thomas to write a proper backstory but he looks cool and i’m including him. he’s here somewhere.
