Trauma and Healing in Children's Media
I love reading fantasy as much as so many others do, but I cannot be the only to notice the extreme lack of care and appreciation for the abuse, mistreatment and trauma of these characters. Especially in media meant for young adults, teens mostly. From Percy Jackson and Harry Potter to Naruto and Danny Phantom, these varying stories all showcase extreme and painful sources of abuse to their main characters often from their own families that are either completely ignored and even made fun of. Never do we see healing, or the natural results of such torment on these characters.
Here are just a few examples of the abuses I mentioned...
Percy's mom doomed her son to misery just by having him, got with an incredibly abusive man to protect her son and keep him near. He was in constant life ending danger for literally years, the center of a prophecy, constantly threatened by the gods who he was actually related to, mistreated by the demigods and forced into terrible situations over and over again. He saw kids his own age and younger die...
Harry lost his parents, was forced into an abusive home with his so called family for more than a decade. Forced into a cupboard, starved, hit and hurt, told he was worthless and his parents were too. He was forced to save the Wizards over and over despite near death experiences and being treated like garbage by all of the wizards for no reason. He was abandoned by his friends and literally died at some point. He was literally tortured and forced to see people die.
Danny was forced to act as a hero despite constant threats against his life and well being, terrible friends and parents that wanted to kill his alter ago... neglectful parents at that.
Naruto is literally all trauma, abused and neglected by all of his peers and the adults around him. He had no friends or allies, betrayed by someone he admired and nearly killed. He had a demon/timebomb in his soul and so on... his parents were killed to save him. The boy is all trauma.
In all four cases, these kids give everything to the world, altruistically over and over again... they are the center of servile behavior for those that do no deserve their love or appreciation. The people they save and help are often their biggest abusers.
There is this pervasive idea that trauma makes you stronger, it doesn't healing does. None of these characters got help, just more trauma and neglect! It is a terrible message we send our kids, that you just have to buck up and ignore the pain, sacrificing your needs for others.
The only example I can think of challenging this is in Percy Jackson where Percy and several others at least point out the abuse and call it out. Percy gets the gods to be good parents, or at least less terrible ones.
I for one look forward to the day where we get to see a story where the Main character fights for themselves and is not just the center of salvation for others... that would be a revelation, to see someone, especially a kid, being healthily selfish for once...
So... yeah.

Black Butler Vol. 29 | Book Review
We slowly start to come down from the high of the big reveal and the series starts to settle into the new way of things again. There are still so many questions but the story must press forward, we will have time to learn O!Ciel’s name in the future. For now, he and the servants need to set in motion a plan to stop R!Ciel from taking everything from beneath O!Ciel’s feet. The volume opens by…

I started a book blog called the Lesbrary in 2011, because I couldn’t find an LGBTQ book blog that wasn’t 90% M/M books. Of course, I started an accompanying Tumblr for it at about the same time, because I spent most of my time there. Years later, I’d join BookTube, and years after that, I even gave BookTok a try for a bit before slowly backing away.
Over that time, I saw the bookish internet grow and evolve, allowing for more niche spaces, for different formats, for new personalities. I loved the passionate debates happening on Tumblr around representation, separating the art from the artist, and more prickly fandom disagreements…and then I loved those conversations significantly less when they popped up again and again, on Twitter and Tumblr and YouTube and TikTok, with absolutely no progress made over time.
Tumblr media
I haven’t packed up my blog, though. Because as I watched the same conversations play out over and over again on different platforms, I really started to understand how ephemeral most of them are. BookTube and BookTok are great for browsing and following, but they’re not easy to search. You might be able to find general topics (like queer books), but looking for something specific is trickier. The platforms just aren’t designed for that.
For people making bookish content online, might I recommend a tie-in blog? It can be a great place to organize your content: for instance, if you recommend your favorite queer mermaid books in a TikTok, you can embed the video on your blog and note down the titles and authors, making it easy to reference later. You can even add some affiliate links for the chance of getting a little bit of money out of that work, depending on the size of your audience.
As we see this long-anticipated online pivot to video, I’m not ready to say goodbye to book blogs. And if you’re reading this, it looks like you probably aren’t either.

Hellooo~
Tumblr media
Welcome to my diary or journal or personal blog (still in the process of deciding lol) where I'll be posting everything about the books I'm reading to sharing my own personal writing I hope to one day grace the shelves of Barnes and Noble.
Little more about me: I'm Jass, 27 years old, work as a teaching aide for Pre-K 4, and spend way too much time in my room 😅
What this blog is basically created for is to have a safe space with other book nerds like me, open to sharing their opinions on books and the like, and to help me find my passion for writing again 🥰
So, having said all that, now we can get to the fun stuff! See you later, nerds~

5 Quick Reads
Tumblr media
For our most recent public holiday in the UK, I wrote about my favourite doorstep novels (big books to get stuck into and take your time over).
Today, we’re going in a different direction, and I’ll be talking about some of my favourite quick reads.
We all live busy lives, and much as I love a big book, occasionally I crave the opposite: a short book I can read in a single weekend (or over 24 hours, if I’m on leave from work).
Here are five of my favourites:
Animal Farm by George Orwell (144 pages)
Ignore anyone who laughs at you when you tell them you’re reading this (which happened to me one day at work – it is possible the man in question thought I was talking about something else!).
Subtitled “A Fairy Story” this is actually anything but. A novella about the downtrodden animals of Manor Farm, who overthrow their human master Mr Jones and take over the running of the farm themselves, it’s a satire about totalitarian regimes (specifically Communism) and what happens when idealism is replaced by corruption and greed.
Granted, communism isn’t the most cheerful subject to acquaint yourself with on a sunny weekend, but Animal Farm is entertaining, powerful and terrifying in equal measure.
Shopgirl by Steve Martin (220 pages)
Yes, that Steve Martin. He writes books too!
I read this last year as part of a reading list. The prompt was “an author with the same initials as you”. I’m not the biggest Steve Martin fan, but I enjoyed the film version with Claire Danes and the author himself as her love interest, and so, over 3 long nights during the 2022 World Cup, I gave it a shot.
Shopgirl is a fun read, telling the story of Mirabelle, a lonely, adrift shop assistant who works in an LA department store. Mirabelle is pursued by two suitors: the older, emotionally unavailable millionaire Ray, and penniless, equally adrift Jeremy. It’s dark, funny and just a bit cool. I loved it.
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (180 pages)
You didn’t expect me to write a list of quick reads without including The Great Gatsby, did you?
The quintessential novel of the Jazz Age, The Great Gatsby is one of the few novels that both myself and my sister thoroughly enjoyed. The tale of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his doomed romance with the socialite Daisy Buchanan, told by Gatsby’s acquaintance Nick Carraway, there is a reason this one regularly makes an appearance on lists of the greatest novels ever written.
It’s very readable, it’s concise, and it doesn’t meander. The characters are flawed but likeable, and most importantly they are relatable.
If you’ve never had the pleasure of making Jay Gatsby’s acquaintance, sit down this week and do so immediately. You won’t want to leave.
Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson (104 pages)
One for a dark, cold, rainy night. I was gifted this book as a student, as part of a bound boxset of mystery and horror novels. It was part of a larger collection of short stories by Robert Louis Stevenson. Many people know what a “Jekyll and Hyde character” is, think they know the plot and hence avoid the book. Don’t be that person.
It reads like a mystery thriller, so if you’re not into horror novels (like me), there is still much here for you to enjoy.
Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is very much the perfect short story, an absolutely riveting thriller. The plot races along at a breakneck pace (Stevenson himself wrote the original draft in less than three days), and if you’re anything like me, you’ll wish by the end that you didn’t already know what was coming!
Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys (192 pages)
One night, in the days before Netflix and Disney Plus, I was bored. I was in search of something to watch on TV and began channel hopping, when I came across a film called Wide Sargasso Sea. I had missed the first few minutes, but something about it grabbed me instantly. I was riveted and didn’t move from my seat until the film was finished. I’ve never seen it shown on any television channel or streaming service from that day to this. Having searched fruitlessly for months to find a copy of the film (these were the dark days when such things were not instantly available), I decided instead to read the novel on which it was based.
A prequel to Jane Eyre, Wide Sargasso Sea is the story of Antoinette Cosway, a white heiress living in Jamaica, who meets and marries the young Mr Rochester. It is essentially the story of how their marriage disintegrates and she becomes the Madwoman in the Attic of Charlotte Bronte’s novel.
I later donated Wide Sargasso Sea to a book swap shop in Tenerife, in the hope that someone else would discover it and love it as much as I did. And perhaps one day the BBC will decide to show the film again!
What are your favourite quick reads?

Hera's Heir
Here is a story idea for anyone that would like to use it.
So many stories have children of Zeus or Poseidon or countless other deities. I have never seen a child, heir or legacy of Hera. Hera is a great, powerful, interesting character in mythology that could have created a child or legacy with incredible powers! However, again, she would never have a regular demigod so most don't use her. That makes sense to be honest, since Hera was entirely against affairs and was the goddess of marriage... however, if you are an author, loopholes are not hard to find.
Here are a few...
Made from Clay, like Pandora, this child would be crafted by Hephaestus or Hera herself. Brought to life by Hera's power, this child could start out not knowing of their powers or status for some time before coming to life.
Next, Hera could have breastfed them. Hercules only gained super strength through this method, thanks to Athena tricking Hera, so really it could have been an interesting idea.
Last, she could have willed herself to become pregnant like she had with Hephaestus, which was well within her power.
Loneliness, jealousy over Zeus, or just curious could be some of the many paths you could use to create this character. Hera is a goddess of family and ruler-ship, of marriage and women, she would and could create a child of immense and interesting power...
So... yeah!

The Song Of Achilles
"He is half of my soul, as the poets say. I could recognise him by touch alone, by smell. I would know him blind, by the way his breaths came and the way his feet struck the Earth, I would know him in death. At the end of the world."

I'm currently reading 'The Mind & The Brain' - so far it seems fine. The one thing I keep getting hung up on though, is that more or less every second page so far seems to have been printed while the ink was running low; which I'm okay with overall, as, hey, it happens, and it'd be a huge waste to throw away pages just because the ink is weak. But on the other hand, as you can see on the picture, it makes these pages soo hard to read - I keep having to put in breaks just to relax my eyes. :/

Black Butler Vol. 28 | Book Review
I have never been so shook by a manga in my entire life. I can’t believe Toboso has really changed the entire landscape of her story after more than a decade of writing it. More and more I think about things I’d brushed off and realize that they were all leading up to this reveal. I wonder how long she’s really had this planned. From all the way in the beginning? Was this something that was just…
