One thing I’ll never understand about UK universities (or at least in England) is that even though the minimum grade for a first (the highest grading level) is 70%, you need a near perfect essay to get that and getting 80% or higher is practically unheard of. My friend got an 80 on a essay last year and it was such a big deal that the lecturers in the English department were gossiping about it because teachers never give 80s. Like I’m convinced that they only give 80s for work thats publishable. You’ll get a 70 on an essay and in the feedback, they’ll tell you that it’s basically perfect and there’s little to nothing to change. If my essay is that goddamn perfect give me a 98 or something omg.
I joined university with the same false assumption most students have, “I scored straight 70s and 80s in secondary school, it can’t be hard to get a first” and then realise that 70s need practically perfect essays. It took ages for me to readjust my expectations and be proud of my 65 on an essay.
So I guess if anyone is just starting university or will be soon, readjust your standards when you get there because these people is grading on wildly different expectations I swear.

Day 1 of 100 Days of University - 26/09/2023
I finally started my journey to study Fashion Journalism and Content Creation at the University of the Arts London.
For the first two hours, they gave us an introduction about the course and the university in general, and for the last two hours, we did a lecture on Teeline.
I also went to lunch with three people from my course.

Pomodoro and Cornell study technique: PART 1
having an exemplary method for taking and reviewing notes is imperative if you want to improve your understanding of the material covered in class.
Cornell note-taking method
what is it
the Cornell method is a note-taking method that aims to improve grades by creating a more efficient note-reviewing system
the process
the page is split into three distinct sections (the note-taking area, the cue column and the summary area) and each has a specific purposes
during the lesson notes should be recorded within the "note-taking section". in this section of the page aim to write notes that are as complete and informative as possible. when you get to summarizing the notes, it will be helpful as you will have more to work from
the cue column is the area to the side of the page where words that are specific but relatable to the notes go. this column plays a major role when it comes to reciting the information and assessing how much of the information you truly understand. these words should act as gentle reminders or prompts for the content covered in the "note-taking area". filling in this column should be left until after class when more time can be allocated to thinking of a suitable word
the summary should reiterate the content from the "note-taking area" and rephrase it in a simpler way that uses fewer words. it can be found at the bottom of the page and makes it easier, at a glance, to see what is covered in the notes
Tumblr media
why use this method
as you can see due to the colour coding each section works together in this method to achieve the 5 R's of studying
record
recording meaningful facts and ideas in the "note-taking section". at this point, it doesn't need to be neat. just an area to quickly get important information down
reduce
in the clue column choose a specific relevant word for each paragraph to act as clues for what the paragraph as a whole is talking about. This helps to clarify meanings, reinforces continuity and improves memory
recite
cover up the note-taking section and, using those "specific relevant words " in the clue column try and write down the information from the notes from memory. using this method of reciting means that you can visibly see the gaps in your knowledge
reflect
find out how the notes are relevant to your course of study or class and make your own opinions on the process or organisation. Knowing its relevancy helps to avoid it being forgotten as it implies that you have a deeper understanding of the matter
review
spend at least 10 minutes a week going over the notes and testing yourself on the subject matter in order to fully ensure that you understand
the website used to gather this information

I could not know how tomorrow looks like, the mood I’ll get up to or the people who’ll talk to me. I could try and guess, shoot my shot and make a try. see what happens next and plan nothing. I could not know what the next few seconds hold for me, but I perfectly know what’s going to happen on this day in a year. I woke up this morning and felt my heart skipping a beat - 18th of october. a date that just a year ago meant absolutely nothing to me. a still meaningless day for most people out here. and yet, in a year, today, I’ll have sat down at a desk and got nearer to my future. in a year, today, all the studying, all the efforts I’m now doing will partly be put down on paper and sat aside for a month or two, closed in a drawer no one knows about. part of my future will be determined by this day in a year. what a responsibility! shivers down my spine thinking about it. there’s still so much I need to do, not enough time to do everything and to be everything, but somehow I’m managing to cope with it, get through it and work well on the fundamentals. building up a future for yourself no one, with a few exceptions, knows about is hard and overwhelming and it makes you busy. but, gosh, the satisfaction will be worth it all.

USAmerican Twitter just found out that UK universities have their own Homeland Security lmao. Almost affronted that they don't have the market cornered on fascist dystopianism. Grand time for un-exceptionalism all around.
FYI it's called "Prevent" and the main thing universities are using to terrorize their grieving Palestinian students and faculty plus their allies. Look it up.

I attended my first in-person conference on Tuesday, the British Ecological Society Aquatic Group annual meeting at Lancaster University! It was quite a small conference, but really enjoyable! So many incredibly interesting talks, ranging from global warming and ocean acidification to using meeting sponges to assess community diversity through eDNA!
Despite the grey, drizzly weather, it was a great experience, and I definitely have a few more papers to read and connections to make!
Lancaster uni also had a lovely campus with pretty architecture and lots of little green spaces! There was a gorgeous coffee shop on campus (who do amazing vegan hot chocolate!) called Coastal and co. If you're ever on campus, I highly recommend them! :)
Please enjoy this little photo I took outside of where the conference was! You can just about see the coffee shop I mentioned in the back!

Hi everyone! 👋
Long time no see! How are we all?
I’m so sorry for being inactive. Let’s have a little update.
I’m at medical school! First semester has been amazing. I’ve met so many people, I love all the content. I’m so incredibly happy. I’m currently in the middle of exam season (😬) so I’ll post about those exams soon.
Bigger and better study content coming soon (I promise)!
Love from,

001/100 Days Of Productivity - 12082023
This is my first day of the 100 Days of Productivity Challenge. As someone who tends to procrastinate a lot, I want to help myself to do the things I need and would like to do.
Today I woke up pretty early, and I had a small job interview. Later, I refreshed my curly hair, and in the afternoon, I went to an Italian food shop.
I also posted my introduction post here on Tumblr. ✧.*
Things I need to do and did:
I need to organize my iPad and PC.

Hey there!! I'm planning to go study a Bsc in zoology like you and I'm so confused about student finance, maintainence loans, when I apply for study finance, student accommodation? Do you have any tips? Thank you!
my best advice would be to apply for student finance as soon as possible (you can find it by searching for student finance england and making an account). I'm pretty sure that you can start applying in march (which is what i wish i had done) but if like me you forget. my application was still accepted in august so i wouldn't panic too much. as far as i know no one has ever been refused. having said that i can only talk about my personal experience as a uni student in the uk.
the aplication for your student finance and mentance loan are combinde but separated into two sections. you will be asked questions such as "what is your house whold income" and "where will be your place of residence during term time". these questions are to determin if you are elegable for the full mantance loan or the minimum.
all students that apply for it will get the same amount of money sent directly to there university to pay for the course. your matince loan shouldn't need to be spent on that. what it will need to be spent on is paying to stay in uni halls, food, bills (if there not included) and any leisure activities you might want to do during freshers week
and there's various options when it comes to university accommodation. for me i am living on site but i have a feeling that each facility will be different. with my university the applications opened in January. i feel like it is more important to apply for this as soon as you can because places tend to fill up quickly and you might end up not being able to get a spot reserved.
feel free to ask anymore questions. i might be a bit slow to reply due to classes starting today but ill do my best to respond in a timely manner
