Plot tables: Mapping out and organizing all your plots and storylines

Can't organize your plot and are juggling between several plot lines? I got your back, I present: Plot tables!

(I'm probably not the only person to use these, but I have no idea if these are commonly used and I just don't know about it or I actually did something with this)

Here's a loose example I threw together. It's just a normal table where each column represents a different storyline within the same story. It shows you roughly what should happen in each chapter / scene.

e.g., from the example table, we see that in chapter / scene 1, there's a chase scene where the police lose track of the criminal they're following, as well as in the same chapter we see character B and C break up.

It's nothing groundbreaking, but it's something I want to share considering the amount of people I see complaining about juggling 50 million storylines and having no orderly way to keep track of it

Average nerd activity

Lately I’ve been considering continuing a story I came up with last year for school; “EXTINCTION 6.” That’s not what I called it at the time, but it’s what I’m calling it now lol Anyways, this one of a weaponized T.Rex is a watercolour based off of skeletal reconstructions of Sue. The antagonist in the plot is a giant rival organization who currently possesses the most of the [insert cool name for a futuristic tech material here] and can use it to arm and control dangerous dinosaurs like this Rex. The story is taking place after humans essentially destroy the planet, hence the name Extinction 6. Where are the dinosaurs from? Um… I definitely didn’t use the whole genetic engineering scheme of Jurassic Park….

Edward Beckett (Right) & Joseph Miller (Left)

This is a rough ROUGH drawing okay, please ignore the bad colouring and anatomy.

Edward Beckett:

- Edward Beckett is Albert’s only son, he and his twin sister Marjorie were born on the 15th of may 1916, and resided in the family estate, in the rural part of the English countryside. (His grandfather’s an earl.)

- Although, despite being wealthy and living on an estate, he isn’t one to take advantage of his high social status. Happy to help out and do the heavy lifting around his grandfathers pub. That is not his only job, Edward also runs his father’s Factory, since he is too unwell to do so himself.

- He enjoys in his limited free time playing the piano and writing his own sheet music and songs, although, he is unable to preform them because he has written songs about being in love with men.

- Edward’s a gay man during a time period in history where it’s dangerous to be gay, although he’s had a plethora of female relationships, so that he’s not found out.

- When war breaks out on September 1st 1939, Edward originally is not conscripted because of his family’s status and his father bribing the war office. But he goes behind his father’s back and enlists.

- He ends up being sent to France during the d-day landing. (Specifically on gold beach.) and survives although, for a short time he goes M.I.A before he is eventually picked up by the us 4th infantry division as they made their way through France.

- Nicknames: Eddie/Eds (Joseph), Teddy (Only Marjorie), Beckett (Via Other Soldiers)

- Languages: English, French & Only very basic and little Italian (it’s horrendous.)

Joseph miller:

- Born into an Italian American household in The Bronx, NY on September 25 1916. Joseph is the eldest of 3 boys. His two brothers are called Andrew & Spencer. They’re a family of devout catholics, which causes a lot of inner turmoil for Joseph since he is secretly a gay man.

- From a young age he has helped out in the family business ‘Miller&Sons’ Green Grocers. Often being found stacking shelves, bringing in delivery’s and chatting with customers.

- When the us official joined the war on the 11th of December 1941, Joseph joined up, and was sent for training.

- In the January of 1944, He arrives in England with the rest of the 4th infantry division. Where he is to stay in preparation for the d-day landings (Where he ends up on Utah Beach).

- Nicknames: Joey (Most Common), Miller (Common, Via Other Soldiers), Giuseppe (His Father, Nonno & Nonna), Joe (Marjorie Beckett)

- Languages: Italian & English

The ending of their story is gut wrenching, heheh. Seriously tho, Ouch.

Their relationship:

- February 1944, They meet when Joseph goes to the pub which is advertently own by Edward’s grandfather. At the time, Joseph admired him from afar, watching as he plays the piano, Only for Edward to see him struggling with the currency and gave him the drink on the house. From there they begin to talk and get to know each other.

- March 1944, Marjorie invites Joseph down to the secret gay bar beneath the pub. Which the Beckett twins frequent as their grandfather set it up for them.

- April 1944, they grow closer (Yes, that’s all you’re having.)

- May 1944, Joseph stay’s the night at the estate until both he and Edward are sent to different destinations in preparation for the d-day landing.

- June 1944, they’re both on the beaches, without knowing if the other is okay. Until somehow, they meet up via complete accident.

- July 1944, battling through France having eachothers backs. (Joseph teaches Edward Italian, Edward tries to teach Joseph French but it doesn’t go well.)

- August 1944…. (More is to come.)

im putting my entire soul and bussy behind the following writing advice:

learn about a bunch of different ways that stories are traditionally structured (optional but i'll always encourage it)

eventually have it strike you like lightning from the heavens that traditional plot structures all follow the character development of the protagonist, which means that

it is absolutely possible to pace your plot in a way that strays from traditional storytelling but still feels like a natural and satisfying progression for your readers, as long as you structure it roughly along the path of whatever the fuck is happening with your protagonist

sounds like a small obvious thing but this can save you from a lot of headaches if you've been struggling to cram your plot into a traditional model where it might not even belong in the first place. try to isolate the character development of your protagonist, and make that your primary guide instead

I had this weird creepypasta AU floating around in my head where everyone hunts weird cryptids/supernatural things in the forest cause Slender hates competition or some shit. (I'm still working on why but that's the reason I'm going with. Lmao)

Like they have little teams with stupid names. Half actually have to fight some and the others are on watch duty and report any findings they see so they could see if the beings are a threat.

I suck at writing but maybe I'll draw it out one of these days. 🤔

-Many centuries ago during the rise of the Nighlok five clans rose to power with their usage of Symbol Power, Master Xandred kept a stronghold against the families but with their combined strength they were able to banish him away into the Netherworld fully. Upon doing so an age of miracles begun with the families utilizing Sybol Power and their elements to develop their own rule amongst the land (Red based in order and construction, Pink oriented around history and the relics of the world, Green in nature and the advancements such had to offer, Blue with growth and creation and Yellow in agriculture). However tensions amongst the clans began to brew and after numerous conflicts three out of the five decided to spread out into the world hoping for better opportunities with their legacies, while some may be in ruin other have been able to prosper happily even till this day.

I have found the EXACT type of app for story planning I have been looking for FOR YEARS. It's called Story Plotter, it's on iOS and Android and it includes character sheets, timelines, editable templates for everything and so much more. Holy shit. I can finally organize my ideas.

LOOK AT THAT DIAGRAM SECTION!! I'VE BEEN JUST MAKING THOSE MYSELF IN LIKE WORD OR SOME SHIT. AND IT WAS ANNOYING AS FUCK

The character settings alone are so in-depth already and you can add anything else you need. It's all able to be color-coded and there are little icons for indicating specific events in the timeline.

I'm so excited to start being able to PLAN THINGS?!

Now to figure out how to make branching storylines work in this because all my ideas are for visual novels... 😆

Wanted to talk about the app I've been using to plan out my House M.D story.

Fortelling

This app is really cool if you plan stories the way I do...and by that I mean complete chaos lol.

So first we have all these cool options. Chapters are like wordpad, writing goals lets you set dates and word count goals. Timeline and events are self explanatory, but if you are like me, super helpful. Characters allow you to give a lot of information about your character that maybe you think of on the spot and aren't sure if you'll use in the story, write it down, any info could come in handy. Also character groups, which has really come in handy when working on a criminal case story lol.

Boards is something I have been using A LOT. If you are like me, you come up with random ideas for scenes or chapters but aren't sure where in the story they will fit. This allows you to create sticky notes that you can then rearrange and link once you get an idea of how you want your story to flow. They are also good to create family trees so you know how each of your characters play into the story.

Also if you want a desktop version that you can link to the mobile app as well as a few other perks it's $5 a month.

I'm not sponsored by them or anything, just wanted to share a story planner app that works well for my ADHD brain just in case anyone else plans stories the same way I do ☺️

Basically lil background bit- dis is one lil au of mine i'm building up, and lil Venobrai here was gifted a little locket/music box item by a young Krux after finding, and taking her in his care. The little music box plays the beginning bit of the Hands of Time theme before the beat really comes in but, as its a lullaby or piano version of the intro. Its something Vena's holds dear for... What happens between her and her guardian/father figure. It ain't a Ninjago story without some feels after all :3
