Types of side characters
1. Foil Characters: These side characters are designed to contrast with the main character, highlighting their qualities or flaws. Foil characters can provide a different perspective and challenge the main character's beliefs or actions.
2. Mentors or Guides: These side characters serve as mentors or guides to the main character, providing wisdom, guidance, and support. They often have more experience or knowledge in a specific area and help the main character navigate challenges or learn important lessons.
3. Comic Relief Characters: These side characters bring humor and levity to the story. They provide comedic relief during intense or serious moments and can help balance the overall tone of the narrative. Their wit, clumsiness, or unique personality traits make them enjoyable and entertaining.
4. Love Interests: Love interests are side characters who are romantically involved with the main character. They add a romantic subplot to the story and can contribute to the main character's personal growth and development. Love interests can be supportive, challenging, or even create conflict within the narrative.
5. Antagonists or Villains: Side characters can also take on the role of antagonists or villains. They oppose the main character's goals and create conflict and tension in the story. Antagonists can have their own motivations, complexities, and backstories, making them more than just one-dimensional obstacles.
6. Friends or Allies: These side characters are the main character's companions, friends, or allies. They provide emotional support, camaraderie, and assistance throughout the story. Friends or allies often share common goals and values, and their relationships can help showcase the main character's growth and strengths.
7. Family Members: Side characters who are family members of the main character can play significant roles in shaping their identity and backstory. They can provide emotional connections, conflict, and a sense of history within the narrative.
8. Background Characters: While not all side characters have to be highly developed, background characters help create a sense of realism and immersion in the story. They populate the world and add depth to the setting, even if they have minimal impact on the main plot.
9. Rivals or Competitors: These side characters compete with the main character, pushing them to improve, overcome obstacles, or achieve their goals. Rivals or competitors can be a source of conflict, motivation, and personal growth for the main character.
10. Witnesses or Observers: These side characters serve as witnesses or observers of the main events in the story. They may provide insights, commentary, or serve as a narrative device to convey information to the reader.

Character Agency
Your characters should have agency. That means they have the power to influence what’s happening around them. We talked a bit about agency last time, revolving around how many female characters get agency stripped away from them. But overall, agency is important for any character to make them active participants in their own stories and feel necessary to the plot.
So here’s how you enable your characters agency:
1. They make active decisions
Okay this is the obvious one in theory, but still manages to sneak by in stories undetected. An active character with agency makes things happen through their decisions, instead of just their reactions. Take these two examples of a scene plan:
John is walking home when he is caught by a sudden storm. Looking to hide from the rain, he ducks under the cover of a bus shelter. Inside is Mya, and they strike up a conversation about their shared sucky situation.
Vs.
John is walking home when he is caught by a sudden storm. Luckily he brought an umbrella in his bag, and draws it out. Then, he sees Mya getting drenched by the rain ahead of him. He jogs to her, offering to share the umbrella. They strike up a conversation.
In the second example John isn’t just reacting but making a choice that’s changed something in the world. He may just happen to run into Mya, but it was his decision to run up to her, to offer her his umbrella. This action is a great indicator of his personality—he’s kind, trusting, and thoughtful even towards strangers.
That’s the most important part. A character who just reacts to everything doesn’t show off any personality, whereas action lets you demonstrate who your character is at their core (especially in difficult situations that call for difficult decisions).
2. Their actions have consequences
Similarly, the decisions your active character makes aren’t really decisions if they don’t impact any part of their world. For good or for bad, every decision your character makes should have a consequence. This could be shown through their relationships with others, their environment, or even their own mental, physical, or spiritual state.
If we’re going from the example above, John sharing his umbrella with Mya maybe starts their friendship, but her jealous, toxic boyfriend sees them through his window, making her and now his life difficult.
It’s a decision that has multiple consequences throughout his life—a new friendship, and also a new enemy. And Mya is also facing consequences—from her decision to walk with him, and his decision to offer her the umbrella.
Make sense? How do you ensure your character has agency?

the inside job is so real bc nate and eliot meet archie and they are on the absolute same page that it is on SIGHT with him
literally the only reason he didn’t end up with like broken knees in a damp, dark back alley somewhere is because they know that despite parker’s messed up relationship with him, it would make her sad
parker being sad is not allowed if they can help it
so instead, when parker is off doing her occasional solo heist for fun, the rest of the team plots his demise if he ever hurts parker again
💖 love is stored in planning bodily harm of those that hurt the people you love 💖
(post inspired by someone reblogging my parker-archie fucked up relationship post)

side characters when they figure out you have a praise kink
(may be a little off, sorry,)
Diavolo
Found out pretty quickly and confronted you about it with his famous smile "Do you have a praise kink mc?".. "What"
He figured it out when you would smile and blush whenever he would praise you for something you did.
Now he enjoys making you smile and blush while he showers you with praises, praising you makes him happy.
Barbatos
Found out quickly by looking into the future.
He was kinda surprised by finding out you had a praise kink, but maybe he could use that knowledge for something else.
Yeah, i got nothing else for him
Simeon
Very surprised that you have a praise kink..like you?! Of all people you?! Doesn't know how to feel, so it may take some time for him to look at you the same way don't worry tho he doesn't mind he's just shocked.
You'll ask him on why he's ignoring you, he explains that he has found out about something about you...cue you starting to sweat like crazy.
After he tells you about what he found out you'll be red and a blushing mess. He wonders if you get off by getting praised during...Clear those impure thoughts simeon!!
Solomon
He's smug about it after figuring out about your praise kink.
He'll casually bring it up just to see your shocked face "What's got you so shocked mc?" like sir...
He'll praise you non-stop he's just like asmo tbh "No one has to know we're here~" he'll whisper that in your ear before locking his door.
Bonus!!
Thirteen
She's just like solomon and asmo..smug as fuck about it.
Next time she hangs out with best believe she's going to lock your door before walking over towards you with a smirk "The brothers aren't here anyways..so it'll be our little secret~"
You start to mindlessly babble about the brothers coming home early but she's quick to shut you up with a kiss.
(I didn't do the two other side characters because i may get there character wrong and i probably got thirteens character wrong)
(I'll do more of these soon)

Anyway now I also play Obey me.
You can see the translation of their words down below if you're interested.
Diavolo: Human. Welcome to the hell.
Lucifer: Diavolo, I doubt humans speak Latin these days.
Diavolo: Is that so?

Creating Memorable Side Characters
Not everyone gets to be the star of the show. Side characters fill out your world and add context to your main character’s journey. Often they are the parents, friends, or coworkers of your main character and as important of a role they play in the MCs life, it’s easy to forget they exist until we need them next.
While they shouldn’t take the main stage, creating memorable side characters gives them a sense of realism and importance. They can provide motivation, inspiration, or a little bit of support when the MC needs it next, which will all land harder if we care about them as people. So here’s a few ways to do it:
Give them a little arc.
While the journey of the main character is why we’re reading your story, they aren’t the only people who can change. Allowing your side characters some development across the story, even in small ways, can add a layer of depth and intrigue to them. This can look like going from “dad hates all of MC’s friends” to “dad houses and feeds all the friends when they need it most”.
2. Give them a space
Unmemorable characters are treated more like tools to the narrative than people. If your side character shows up wherever they are needed at any given time, they’ve become a plot convenience rather than a person. Give them a place to exist—they hang out in the library, they can be found at the café down the street, they’re three phone calls and a flare in the sky away. Give them a reliable place that’s just theirs.
3. Give them a point of interest
While your side characters aren’t going to be as fully developed as your MCs, you can pretty easily give them some intrigue and the hint of a broader life by giving them a specific point of interest. Maybe the friend is in the photography club, the parents go out to drag shows on the weekend, the coworker always has a new crochet scarf to bring to work, etc. Just make sure it doesn't stand in alone for further character development.
What are some examples of memorable side characters you can think of?

Obey me! x short! Reader
How do they react to short! MC picking them up?
Sorry in advance, if any of them I actually got it wrong of who created it
Bold is reader (Reader is like dominant)
Characters: Diavolo, solomon, simeon
Part 2
Pictures; all from obey me beside 1...
Has a tiny bit of genshin
DIAVOLO
Tumblr media
Well this was awkward. You just got called to Diavolo and you just come in to see this. Diavolo holding a plushie of you/sheep [LOL]
"....so what did you call me for?"
He cleared his throat as a distraction from his red face.
"Well, uhm. I am here about your great progress in the exchange program."
As he held the sheep, he talked about your great impression of the other demons and etc. But you were annoyed, why? Because some tall-ass demon called you weak! Oh how you gonna prove then wrong.
"Hey Dia, can you stand up real quick?"
He was surprised by the nickname you gave him but did oblige to your request.
. . .
He doesn't feel his feet on the ground...wait— is [name] carrying him right now?! Huh??? He was like 5x taller than you? How, just how? The confusion was quickly replaced with laughter and amusement.
"Why spend time with that when you can spend time with the real one?"
It did makes sense though. The real one is better, and wayyyy stronger.
Now I just imagine MC just carrying him like;
Tumblr media
HoYoLAB artist: Ndeye
(This is the only carry I could find that made sense for our little short MC)
SOLOMON
Tumblr media
You were cooking with solomon....wait....solomon...OH SHI—
now you think back, you should not have said yes. Solomon was chopping onions and the classic thing was the onions made him cry. You were about to give him a tissue or something but he was using his hands that touched the garlic! Oh shoot! It was too late....
"AH! FUCK—"
"That was damn dumb of you to do that."
"I know but can you help me now?? At least take me to the hospital to see if I didn't go blind!"
"....we can't...."
"Why??"
"You frickin broke the car."
"Oh, yeah ouch! Well then just bring me to Simeon, he'll patch me up." Solomon washed his hands and rubbed his eyes.
"Alright....."
*swoop*
"I didn't know you knew how to use flying magic." (Solomon's eyes are still closed)
"I don't."
"What?...then why do I feel like I'm not on the ground."
"Because im carrying you."
"Oh, ok."
. . .
"WAIT— WHAT?!"
"Stop screaming or Simeon will have another person to patch up. My ears."
*later*
"Hey, why is Solomon zoning out?" Luke said as he waved his hand in front of Solomon on his tippy toes
"Apparently onions affected him and [name] carried him here....and [name] is quite short too,," Simeon said as he brews some tea.
He hadn't recovered from what happened for multiple weeks. At least you don't need to taste his cooking
SIMEON
Tumblr media
You and Luke were planning a surprise picnic for Simeon. Why? Because thanks to him, we didn't have to eat Solomon's cooking!
Luke told you to hurry and get Simeon. And well, you did.
"Oh, hey [name] what brings you here— EEK-!"
...well that was awkward, he covered his face in embarrassment that he made that noise. But anyways he was very surprised that you were carrying him!
Before he could speak you ran towards the picnic and put him down. You went behind the tree and threw some confetti. Well, you used flower petals as confetti.
"You weren't supposed to bring him like this!" Luke argued, and also questioned how did you carry Simeon? He may not or may so ask you later to teach him your ways.
Simeon in the background chuckled at you two. Life was truly great.
