WARNINGS: Manipulation(Not from Jeongin), blood (nothing gory), talk of death (it's the Addams Family, what did you expect?), The reader is slightly taller than Jeongin (not too much but it is noticeable), Talk about killing for the reader's smile, Jeongin is a whipped simp, Gomez is a whipped simp for Morticia, Jeongin and Reader are a mini Gomez and Morticia. Jeongin follows after Gomez, so there is a little slight yandere in this. He's a soft yandere, but I understand that some people are uncomfortable about them.

Halfway through "It's Okay to Not Be Okay"

This show has me constantly wrestling with the question, "Do terrible people deserve love?"

Yandere types are not usually my thing. I am so wary of the fine line between charmingly obsessive (and darling yet transgressive; it's okay they're possessive, the Addams Family! *snap snap*) and just plain dangerous and toxic to life and person.

But I can see that this show is trying to be nuanced about Ko Moon-young's characterization and Moon Gang-tae's stormy attraction to her. Hell, the script actually uses "antisocial" correctly almost right off the bat, and the show then unravels their respective histories of abuse and trauma over the next several episodes. So, I do understand why Moon-young is so awful and manipulative; I do understand what she's trying to overcome and why it's so hard for her to recognize Gang-tae as not some plaything.

I keep coming back to my main question, though. Typically, Moon-young's behavior is the kind of thing we tell ourselves and each other to stay away from. As Maria Bamford would say, she's a red flag factory. Not everyone has the strength and patience to not only put up with her behavior but also challenge her on it — and then still see someone worth loving underneath all of that.

Hell, Gang-tae is a nurse at an in-patient psychiatric facility, so it's his job to be able to deal with this kind of behavior with both firmness and compassion. I'm trying to figure out what that says about the kinds of relationships someone like Moon-young can have.

(Moon-young isn't a patient, so there's no direct power relationship involved. The show doesn't need to add one more red flag.)

Gang-tae is no saint, either (at least). In fact, his arc seems to be about learning to get off the straight and narrow and think of himself every once in a while, since he was thrust into a caregiving/parental role in his childhood. What does it say, then — assuming this is going to have the usual K-drama ending where they end up together — that his profession will have to bleed into his personal life for one more person, and he'll be happy about it?

There's also the fact that this is a K-drama, with a lot of the genre conventions. Super slow burn. Sweeping romantic music. Long looks. Childhood flashbacks. No kiss until episode #[x]. But also occasional slapstick, occasional plot gymnastics that threaten consistent characterization, and occasional shenanigans that would not hold up in a court of law.

With a more typical K-drama, I'm willing to let writers get away with that kind of thing (though I've gotten less forgiving with newer shows). It's probably just to add drama, add conflict, add laughs, or just fill out the episode order. But when the shenanigans are perpetrated by someone like Moon-young, I cringe, because of what it says, what message it sends, especially when it's wrapped up in the very pretty K-drama package.

It's a bit telling that the original Korean title is also translated as "Psycho But It's Okay". Someone probably told the translators that was Not Okay before they released this internationally (via Netflix).

One of the things I love about the show is how, usually once an episode, Moon-young takes a beloved fairy tale or children's story and exposes its darker side to whoever's listening at the time. I will be so disappointed if the writers who recognize that awful stuff, hiding in the original stories and sanitized by modern adaptations, fail to apply that same awareness to how this story ends. I will be okay (lol) if the final message is simply, "It's okay because True Love". But as I'm going into episode 10, I'm wary, oh so wary, of how they're going to get there and what it's going to look like.
