㌥( ྀིง ˙˘˙ )ว㌥ . . halloooo happie deepavali fwens :D ! ! this is my silly littl gift to u . . . it’s quite rushed + not my best work , but i rllie wanted to post something for today ｡ﾟ(ﾟ´ω`ﾟ)ﾟ｡ regardless of whether u celebrate the holiday or not , i hope everything that u wish for comes true && u r blessed w all the joys the universe has to offer ⭐️ ! !

fireworks shower the night sky with ribbons of light, colouring sumeru in vibrant reds and yellows and pinks. amidst the muffled pops and fizzles they create, you can hear the crowds pass by al haitham’s home up along the cobblestone path of the divine tree— laughter from happy couples and cheering from akademiya students, children ushering their parents to ‘hurry up’ lest they miss out on a good spot outside the sanctuary of surasthana to catch the fireworks (and all the sweets are sold out!).

you seem to exist in a similar vein, al haitham finds, when you begin to huff and whine, tilting your head up to pout at him in the mirror while he continues to calmly pin the jasmine garland he’d bought for you earlier in the day into your hair.

“haitham, we’re gonna be late.”

“we won’t be if you’d just keep still for a moment.” with a finger, he pushes your head back down, his lips curling into a soft smile and carving dimples into the apples of his cheeks when he hears you mutter under your breath. “truthfully, i don’t think you’re so preoccupied with being late as you are worried about all the padisarah pudding being sold out when we arrive.”

“yeah, w-well! well…” flaring up in embarrassment, you grumble, gather your cheek within your molars and bite down, avoiding al haitham’s gaze to look down at your hands— nails manicured and wrists sounding off little tinktinks! at the clinks of the bangles that adorn them. “hmph. so what if i am?”

your lover chooses not to dignify you with a response, and instead works a bit more hastily to finish decorating your hair, the rich floral notes and slightly sensual muskiness of the jasmine surrounding his senses until all he can really think about, feel is you.

oh, you darling girl of dreams. sweet, sweet light of his.

dressed the way you are in baby pink, the georgette fabric of your saree pleated and draped perfectly, bindi centred right between your brows, you look nothing short of doll-like, delicate and precious and the prettiest flower in the meadow.

“oww, haitham, you’re tugging on my hair!”

when he notices you wincing, al haitham is drawn out of his head and he ceases his movements in threading bobby pins through your hair, watching you raise your hand to massage the sore spot that blooms across your scalp.

“so fragile,” he leans down over you, his voice lilted into a playful tease, yet his touch so tender and cautious— as if to apologize for the pain he’d caused— before he lays a kiss to the shell of your ear all the while sliding one last bobby pin through your hair.

it’s only brief, but he hears the catch in your breath, how you stiffen your shoulders at the kiss, feeling its aftereffects as a warm trill travelling up and down along your spine.

so fragile, indeed. he staves off the temptation that bubbles in his chest at your meek little display, pocketing it to have his fun with you later in the night.

after all, padisarah pudding comes first!

“there, you’re all done.”

with a few more firm pats of his fingers around the bobby pins, al haitham secures the jasmine garland to your scalp, scritching your head sweetly and sealing his handiwork with a gentle press of his mouth to your temple. he admires you alongside yourself in the mirror, bringing two of the flower chains around either side of your neck, letting them fall along your chest.

“you made me look so pretty!” an airy giggle spills from your lips— soft and glossy as you step back from the mirror to do a twirl for him, reaching out to tug on his sleeve and bounce on your tippy toes, thanking him with a wet mwah! of a kiss to his cheek. “thank you, haitham!”

“wait a minute missy, we’re not leaving just yet…” before you can scamper away out of his clutches, al haitham wraps his fingers around your wrist, tugging gently in a silent command to stay facing him. when you do, he takes your cheeks within the cradles of his palms— searching your eyes and scanning your lips with sharp cerulean, a mischievous smirk.

pretty.

you’re so, so, pretty. something of a little butterfly that he’s come to grow perhaps overly fond of— with your tiny pearlescent wings, the flits and floats when you play among the summer flora, your delicate dances over teacups and honeypots. you fly circles around his heart and entwine it in pink ribbon, drinking its sweet nectar, making a home in the palm of his hands, the strong junction of his neck.

“haiyi…?”

he sighs rather dreamily when you squeak his name in confusion, his teasing smirk dissolving into something more tender as he tucks a loose tuft of your hair behind your ear and adjusts his hold on you, now squishing your cheeks together to effectively pucker your lips. “i think i require more than just a kiss as a thank you.”

“b-but—” you're caught off guard by his close proximity, looking anywhere else but his eyes in an attempt to fight off the roses blooming in your lungs and their petals stuffing your mouth full, leaving you void of oxygen. “but, padisarah pudding…”

at your deflated little whimper, al haitham laughs breathlessly, the corners of his mouth tugging up into a loving smile when he realizes just how endeared he’s become to your puerile nature. he’s hunching his back to hover over you, ghost his lips on top of yours, letting his breath fan spearmint over your face before he dips his head down into the crook of your neck.

“gosh, you’re just too cute…”

he lays his wet, open mouth over your pulse and kisses, and licks, and sucks, and oh—your head spins and your knees buckle as you press further against him, grapple at his shoulders to try and regain any sort of leverage over the dizziness that falls upon you. “hai-haitham; we gotta… gotta go…”

brows knitted tightly, al haitham only hums dismissively at your blubbery words, sliding a warm palm under the drape of your saree to take you even more by surprise. it smoothes down the side of your torso, tugs gently on the gold chain adorning your waist to bring you flush against his chest. his knuckles graze your flesh and his fingertips tease the clasps of your blouse and his touch—tender yet commanding—makes you want to sin.

and it’s only after he’s worked you up to this headspace, needy and clingy and wanting more, pawing at the buttons of his sherwani and panting rather eagerly into his clavicle, that he retracts, pinching the dip of your waist between his thumb and forefinger to bring you back down to earth.

ever the tease.

“hey!” you yelp, he chuckles, you frown, he smiles.

“c’mon. we don’t want you missing out on any padisarah pudding, do we?”

“you’re a horrible boyfriend.” weakly, you bat at his chest before turning away from him to slip on your heels.

he beats you to it, kneeling in front of you before you can reach down for your shoes, gathering the skirt of your saree in one hand before fitting the heel to your bare foot, kissing the gold ‘𝓐 ’ pendant of the chain that rests delicately atop your ankle. “oho, is that what you think of me, dear?”

softening around the edges, your heart skips several beats at the romantic gesture, and your forgiveness is instantaneous, for all you find yourself wanting to do in that moment is kiss and hug and love on him without inhibitions.

“i suppose you’re not all bad…”

he pats your head, rubs his nose against yours in a little bunny kiss. slathering you with his affection is the only way he knows how to apologize to you. “that’s what i like to hear.”

and just as he guides you out the door, on your way to stuff your pretty little face with as much padisarah pudding as your heart desires, he kisses the crown of your head once— for good measure— and pinches your waist, yet again— for good luck!

Thoughts:

I finally got around to re-read this novel! And I couldn’t have done it without Dracula daily and everyone in Tumblr commenting the story and sharing their art.

I loved the experience of reading along with so many people and their posts about it always gave me food for thought. It truly made my reflections about the book richer.

The first time I read this epistolary novel I was fifteen years old and since then I had forgotten many important plot points, as well as some characters. However, I remembered that I had loved the story, and I was fascinated by Mina Murray and Jonathan Harker. Mina was my favorite character and, back then, my favorite suitor was John Seward, followed by Quincey Morris.

I definitely appreciated reading the letters and diaries’ entries in chronological order. I think it may be the better option for a first-time reader.

This time around I felt Jonathan’s terror, hopelessness, and desperation. I was genuinely moved by his trials and tribulations when he was held prisoner at Dracula’s castle.

I loved the voyage of the Demeter because I could feel the anxiety and fear of the sailors. The whole journey was nerve-wrecking.

A character that took me by surprised and completely won me over was Lucy Westenra. I’m angry in her behalf for all the horrible adaptations that portray her under misogynistic lights. A particularly terrifying scene for me was Mrs. Westenra’s death. And when Lucy died was heartbreaking.

The part with the Bloofer Lady was intriguing. Here I have to say that while I had overlooked Arthur Holmwood in my first reading years ago, this time I got to appreciate his character and I could clearly see why Lucy had chosen him. He was so kind and loved her very much. They were so in love and eager to start their live together, it was all so tragic.

Likewise, I’m in awe for John Quincey, Arthur Holmwood and Quincey Morris’ friendship. The affection that the three friends had for each other is hard to miss. I was astonished by Stoker; all his depictions of masculinity are something else. Specially, in Jonathan’s case.

Abraham van Helsing annoyed me and frustrated me for most of the time that he was on the page. I think I only warmed up to him in the final part when he and Mina traveled to Dracula’s castle.

Mina was extraordinary! I loved that she liked to ask about ghost stories, and she was so smart, organized and kind. I’m particularly keen on her hyperfixation with train schedules.

The whole scene when Dracula attacked Mina was appalling, truly nightmarish and gruesome. I can’t for the life of me figure out why there are so many adaptations and (fan)fiction where they’re presented as a romantic couple! In my opinion, romanticize abuse is nauseating.

In general, I think pop culture has failed both Lucy and Mina and they certainly deserve better.

The last section where the whole gang finally comes together; they miraculously stop keeping information from Mina (as they obviously should have done from the beginning); and they work together to defeat Dracula is very exciting!

The ending was gratifying in many ways, although of course it was ultimately bittersweet.

This is a fantastic book, extraordinarily well written and full of adventure, fright, suspense, anticipation, mystery, and action. It’s without a doubt one of my favorite novels ever.

Cowboy Carter Thoughts

Beyonce cannot be stopped! This album with its instrumentation and pacing allows for the natural beauty of her voice to shine and carry the lyrics.

Taking the "country" genre and twisting it in a that is very much her. No skips!

AMERIICAN REQUIEM: Beautiful choice to open the album. Setting the tone in proudly reclaiming her Southern/country roots.

BLACKBIIRD, a cover of the Beatles song brings the meaning behind the original to the fold. Amongst the deep seeded issue of racism in America, it ends on a hopeful note I love.

16 CARRIAGES, beautiful telling of essentially her life story having to be on the grind since a teen to achieve her dreams. The structure of certain sentences stay the same, but changes to a few words (i.e dreams to fears) show the persistence to go for what she wants and be there for her family

PROTECTOR. RUMI LITTLE BABYYYY 🥺🤏🏾

MY ROSE. No one is perfect and everyone has their flaws , but she's hoping you love yourself and I'm not sobbing, you are!

With JOLENE and DOLLY P, Dolly Parton really said, "Whack her. Get her again for me!" Beyonce took it on gladly. And we love to hear it.

DAUGHTER is terrifying in a subtly powerful way as her being someone to not mess with. Also, the way the Italian opera fit in was so smooth! Then the transition to SPAGHETTII is a powerful punch to that. Fun!

Initially surprised by Miley's appearance in II MOST WANTED, but their voices worked well together. And same with Post Malone in LEVII'S JEANS. Okay, y'all!

YA YA is a unique sound on it's own. Not country. Not rock. Not pop. It is its own thing to jive and have fun to. Obsessed.

RIIVERDANCE was enjoyable taking this Irish-style music and dance and making it her own for another audience.

SWEET ⭐️ HONEY ⭐️ BUCKIIN' Ope the shadeeee! I’m not familiar with Shaboozey, but I’m liking his sound and his contribution made the song bounce. Also the outro ate.

AMEN was a fitting conclusion to the album with "amen" also being the last word in Ameriican Requiem. Chef’s kiss.

35. Mistakes Were Made by Meryl Wilsner--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Meryl Wilsner has done something that I rarely see in romance and automatically earned them a five star rating: a anxiety-free age gap romance that could have been super messy but was surprisingly stress-free. I know that a lot of readers like the messiness, but I found MISTAKES WERE MADE refreshing.

First, I'd like to thank my coworker for recommending this awesome read for me. I have this thing where I start craving a new book and I ask a coworker to find me something and if it sounds good, I'll buy it and try it out. This was an A+ recommendation.

I really enjoyed the character growth on both sides and how both were imperfect and jaded by past relationships. They worked off each other really well--even if it was sometimes the blind leading the blind.

I LOVED the friendship between the one FMC and her childhood best friend. It was so healthy and I loved that their friendship wasn't sacrificed for the sake of plot. It's like Wilsner saw all the tropes I disliked and decided to do the opposite. Also, props to the other best friend (the daughter of the second FMC). She surprised me a lot.

Also, the SPICE. Phewwwww. This was a SPICY book. Just, wow. Was not expecting it, but I thoroughly enjoyed it LOL.

I love a good age gap and this delivered. Everything was respectful and I just loved it so much.

36. Okay, Cupid by Mason Deaver--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I realized, as I started the audiobook for this one, that I've somehow read all of the books Deaver has written (not including the anthologies). Knowing this, I'm not entirely surprised that I enjoyed this newest one, OKAY, CUPID. It was unique, cute, and had some super introspective moments.

I loved how incredibly diverse this book was and how it explored some pretty important topics. Deaver has a way of creating characters that have a lot of heart--even if they are sometimes heavily misguided (which also fits because these are teenagers.)

The concept of the MC being a Cupid was so fun--especially when they are trying their hardest to get their love targets into the perfect opportunities for a love match. The little tricks and the tips the MC receives from their best friend made me think about how, if any of it were real, people all around the world would be thinking about someone they couldn't truly remember somehow getting them all together.

Okay, the concept had some holes (I do wish we had a bit more to go off about this Cupid Alt. world because it was such an interesting idea) and I think it was glossed over a bit too much. I did like that ending though!

My heart belongs with Cal, though. What a loveable himbo.

38. The Secret of Red Gate Farm by Carolyn Keene--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I love how all of these mysteries fall into Nancy Drew's lap and she's just like "Sure, let's do this dangerous thing!" and her dad is like, "Sure honey, have fun!" and the police is like "Good job, Nancy!" when we know damn well that in real life, Nancy would be a nuisance to the police and her dad would either be grounding her or popping tums every thirty minutes.

LOL. Listen, even though I have been enjoying these books, the level of teenage invincibility that Nancy and her friends have adopted throughout the various mysteries has been entertaining.

Anyway, I enjoyed the mystery of this one. I found I liked the multi-levels to the mystery and how everything was revealed at the end. I also liked seeing Nancy with her friends--they're truly ride or die.

I'm excited for the next book because it's where we meet her famous boyfriend for the first time!

39. Our Lives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield--⭐️⭐️⭐️

Much like the waves that beckon one of the MCs to the ocean, the themes in this book are like waves that beckon confusion (for me). There were various storylines happening (between the past and present from the pov of one character, and the past from the pov of the other character) and when I thought I was starting to get a grip on where the story was going, something else would happen to confuse me.

The friends who've read this have loved it, I'm straddling the line of thinking it's genius in its ability to cause chaos, and thinking that this was a beautifully written story that amounted to...a hand cupping water that slowly seeps out through your fingers until you have nothing left in your palm. One part of the ending made sense because we were leading there, but the other part was so confusing and gave me nothing. It's like that meme that says "Yes, girl, give me nothing!"

I could feel the palpable grief, however, and I did love the way the grieving process was described. Despite the confusing nature of the book, Armfield can write. There is no question about that.

I almost DNF'ed this a couple of times, but was curious about why my friends loved it so much.

Was my review confusing? Was my writing all over the place? Welcome to my experience reading this book. LOL.

40. This Wretched Valley by Jenny Kiefer--⭐️⭐️⭐️

On the surface, THIS WRETCHED VALLEY is incredibly intriguing and captivating. You have a group of "researchers" entering haunted woods that are known for the people that go missing within (according to the waitress). Then you have a series of creepy events that lead up to the eventual death of these younger people (not a spoiler, it is literally the first chapter). Like I said, on the surface, this book holds a ton of potential. A collection of things kept this book back from being higher rated by me, but let it be known that I still had a spooky good time.

One of the things I wish was done different was how the author kept pointing out what the character saw and what was the reality. I'm going to be real honest: I would have preferred to fall into the madness with the characters. I don't need to know that the character sees a clue of something and then have the author tell me something like "if the character had looked deep inside themselves, they would have noticed that this didn't make sense." Or, the characters will be walking through some creepy spot and the author would pop in to say "if the character looked down, they'd see that there was nothing there."

Let me fall into the monologue. Trust the reader to know that the characters are probably tripping hella balls. It's fine.

Other than those instances, this book was fun. It made me want to read THE RUINS. These characters were all unreliable and super flawed, but I liked how the author slowly made them worse and worse as they fell under the spell of the woods and land.

41. Dead & Gone by Charlaine Harris--⭐️⭐️⭐️

It's interesting to see how far Sookie has come as a character. I found that this book was a little all over the place and the romantic interests in her life (old and not so old) were all coming out of the woodwork. There was one redemption arc I was never expecting. In retrospect, I wonder if this was just an outward sign of what Sookie is and the events of this book. Maybe her appeal was heightened?

I do like that one character brought up a situation Sookie is falling into like a fly caught in a spider's web, even if that character acted a little out of character. He was a total dick.

Overall, this was entertaining as always, but not a favourite of mine. I think a lot was happening (like a certain reveal, which I loved) but at the same time, it just felt purely chaotic. And Sookie, to me, was acting a bit different than usual. I'm staring down the last four books in the series, so who knows what comes next!
