~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Spending a week in the woods, camping with Rachel, has been a tradition since she could walk. Jean only participated in the first two. After the divorce you weren't sure you wanted to keep the tradition but Jean made a few good points on why you should continue it. Now, years later, it's the best way that you get to bond with Rachel beyond the distracting devices and all of her shows and music. You do your best to keep up with all of it but she is constantly changing. You encourage it, of course. But it's hard to feel connected with your daughter. Except on these trips.
You rent the same spot every year. The two of you build the tent together and make it cozy inside. Then you set up the fire pit and she finds the best spots for the chairs. The two of you make food together over the fire. Tell jokes and scary stories. Remain completely unplugged for the entire trip. At night she snuggles close and you cherish the way she holds you tight because you know there will be a day a few years from now when she won't. She'll be upset with you because you'll be upset with her. Things will get tough, as they do with growing up, and you won't get as many hugs as you do now. And she'll continue to grow up and find her own way in life and her snuggles and these camping trips will be nothing but a distant memory.
Between meals the two of you make up games, talk to each other, and you teach her what you can think of at the moment.  The two of you swim in the lake nearby and have fun splashing each other. A dog runs up to her when she’s eating her food and you already know that she's going to start asking for a dog. Luckily, you're able to convince her that she's still too young for one.
All too soon, it's Friday morning and the two of you are packing up the campsite. It's sad putting away the fun week but it's what has to be done. Once your truck is packed up, you hit the road and she's finally able to use her phone again. The entire drive home she is blasting her favorite songs and singing at the top of her lungs. Once you're back in town you're reminded of your plans and at a stop light you message Wanda to see if she's still up for drinks. You don't get a reply until you're pulling up to your apartment building.
Too nervous to check, you unload the car and get Rachel comfortable before you check your messages. I’ll see you at seven? Your shoulders drop from the relief. You call your sister, Kate, and ask if she can babysit for a couple of hours.
“Oh… does someone finally have a date?” She inquires and it makes you roll your eyes.
“No, I'm just grabbing drinks with some friends,” you clarify.
“You’re so boring,” she groans. “Alright, I'll babysit. I don't mind spending some one on one with my favorite niece!”
“She’s your only niece,” you laugh at her enthusiasm.
“Exactly,” she says. “I’d have other favorite nieces, maybe even nephews, but no. You refuse to make anymore.”
“Gross, you do realize that you're upset with me for not getting laid, right?” The line goes quiet and you wonder if she's even there anymore. “Hello? Kate?”
“I’m here, I just had to go scrub my brain with bleach to remove the last few minutes from my memory.” She says nonchalant, as if that was the most normal thing to do. “Anyway, I'll be there in a few. You better leave me some money for food.”
“Of course, I'll see you in a bit. Thank you so much,” you say your goodbyes and hang up. You walk to Rachel’s room and knock on her door and enter once she says you can. “Hey kiddo, aunt Kate is coming over to watch you for a bit. I have something… I mean I will be… uh, I have to do something.” You cringe at how you’re fumbling telling her that you’re going out. Normally, to avoid this, you would plan to do something on a night you don’t have her. But you only have yourself to blame for this.
“Okay, have fun,” she says as she scrolls through her phone.
“Okay,” you almost want to laugh at how easy that was. “Okay,” you repeat yourself. “I’m going to shower so can you let your aunt in if she gets her before I’m out?”
Rachel nods, “Yeah no prob, now go! You don’t want to smell gross for your date.”
“It’s not a date,” you clarify and Rachel mutters something to herself that you can’t decipher but decide you don’t want to know anyway. “Please don't ever grow up,” you say with a smile and she looks up at you with big eyes like her mother.
“I have to someday,” she says seriously and it crushes something in you. As a parent, that is possibly the best and worst response to ever hear. “Now go, please,” she says with a small wave of her hand.
You finally leave her room, closing the door to the point that it's left to a crack. Just to mess with her a little. Then you head to the shower because you haven't had a proper one in several days. Your daughter is right, you do smell pretty gross. When you step out you hear your sister and Rachel laughing at something playing on the television. You finish getting dressed and when you walk out with a smile to greet the two girls they look up at you with horror.
“What?” You ask as you look at your t-shirt and jeans. Your usual attire.
“Is that what you're wearing?” Kate asks as she slowly eats the popcorn from the bowl between her and Rachel.
“Yeah, why? What's wrong with it?” You laugh at their judgmental eyes.
“Nothing, it's just so… you,” Kate replies with disgust.
“That’s a bad thing?”
“No,” she pauses as she continues to look you up and down. “It’s just not a good thing.”
You shake your head with a laugh, “Gee thanks, little sis. But it's nothing to get bent out of shape over. It's just drinks with some friends. I highly doubt Steve or Phil are going to have anything to say about my outfit.” You grab your jacket and put it on despite Kate's commentary about not wearing it. “What? I checked the weather.  It might rain tonight.”
“I’m sorry, Rach. You’re not going to get another step-mom anytime soon,” Kate says.
Rachel is hardly paying attention to the conversation anymore so when her aunt speaks to her it takes a moment for her to respond. She shrugs, “It’s okay, Ms. Wanda likes their work uniform. She won’t mind this, I guess. I just thought she deserved better from them.”
“Oh, she has a name? And she knows Rachel?” Kate says in surprise, happy to be getting the good details now. “This must be serious.”
You pinch the bridge of your nose as you shake your head. “No, it’s not. I’m not dating anyone, Kate. Stop encouraging this kind of behavior.” You say, frustrated from having to repeat yourself constantly. You never liked this kind of teasing. It makes you uncomfortable and feel like you have something to prove. Besides, it's not fair to the other person who can't defend themselves. You grab your wallet, phone, and keys. “I don't have cash on me so I’ll send you the money for dinner. Thank you for watching her.” You say as you get a text from Wanda that she's already at the bar and sends you her location to double check that it's the right one. You send her a thumbs up. “I’ll be right around the corner so if there's any kind of emergency do not hesitate to call. Okay?”
“Of course,” Kate says. She hands Rachel the bowl of popcorn and gets off the couch. She stands in front of you and pulls you in for a hug. “I’m sorry, I know I tease you a lot but… I just want you to be happy.”
You hold your sister for a second and pull away and smile at her. “I am happy, kiddo. You don't need to be in a relationship to find happiness.”
She pats your check with a fake expression of pity. “Oh, you are so single. It's sad.”
You shake your head with a hearty laugh. “Whatever, weirdo.” You step away from her and go to join Rachel on the couch to give your daughter a hug. “I love you, nugget. I'll see you in the morning.”
“Morning? You’re going to be out all night?” She asks in surprise.
“No, sweetheart. You’ll be in bed by the time I come home.” You tell her with a soft laugh. “I’ll be back here tonight and will be making your favorite breakfast in the morning. Don’t worry.” You tap your finger to her nose and she scrunches her face with a giggle.
“Okay, have fun!” She gives you one last side hug, careful to not spill the bowl of popcorn.
Finally, you leave the apartment building and walk a few blocks down to your favorite bar. You used to work there when you turned twenty-one and learned many skills that you don’t use anymore unless it’s to try and impress someone you’re interested in. Especially since the owner has a soft spot for some of his former employees and will let you behind the bar to let you do a trick or two.
Walking inside The Hub you grow nervous because this will be the first time you and Wanda intentionally hang out together. You weren’t sure what you were supposed to talk about. What if there is nothing to talk about? How are you supposed to continue to go to her house and eat her food if she hates you after this? Steve is sitting at the bar talking with Phil. You met Steve when working here, he was the one who trained you in mixology.
Steve served in the military before you met him here. His usual story is that he only enlisted because he didn’t have a direction at eighteen and needed something to help him make good money early in life. The real story is that he spent the majority of his life training to be in the military. His entire family is in the military, it was all he knew. But once he was actually in battle he realized that life wasn’t for him. When he finished his six year commitment to the Marines, he didn’t renew his contract and hasn’t spoken to his family because of it. To say they didn’t approve would be an understatement.
“Rogers!” You greet him happily. You do a quick handshake and pull each other into a half hug. “It’s been a while, I’m glad you could make it out.” You sit next to him.
“I’ve been good, Peggy and I just got a place together,” he says with a grin as he takes a sip from his beer.
“That’s awesome man,” you congratulate him.
“Wow, it’s like I don’t exist,” Phil says as he sets a glass down in front of you and pours your favorite drink for you.
“I was going to get to you,” you laugh at his impatience. “How’s it been, Coulson? The place looks busy. I can’t even find the person I invited out.” You look around to find Wanda and her friend but have no luck from where you’re sitting.
“Yeah, business has been good,” he says with a frown as he throws his rag over his shoulder.
“Why does that sound like it's a bad thing for you?” Steve picks up on the bar owner's mood.
Phil leans on the bar and sighs. “My daughter is home for the summer and she needed a job but no one was willing to hire her so I thought what’s the worst that could happen? Turns out, it’s this.” He points to the crowd of guys that keep looking over at the bar to catch a glimpse of Phil’s daughter and you laugh as you realize that the ratio of males to females is not what you’re used to at this place.
“Where is she?” Steve asks and you nudge him as you shake your head. “What? I just want to see her. It’s been a while. Geez, I’m in a committed relationship, Y/n.”
Phil looks at Steve, “No one is seeing my daughter tonight. She isn’t scheduled to come in. I’ve made sure to give her all Friday’s to Sunday’s off.” He says proudly. You point out the room full of customers that don’t know and he laughs. “I’m not going to tell them that. I still need to keep this business afloat.” You nod with a smile as someone comes up from behind him and you recognize her from the photos that Phil has in his office. She is much more mature now than she is in those photos and you can see why she draws in a crowd. You clear your throat to get Phil’s attention and point her out to him. He spins around. “Daisy! I gave you the day off! Why are you here?”
“Calm down, Grant asked me to cover his shift. Besides, these are the busiest nights and I can make great tips,” she explains as she ties her apron on. Her and Phil have a quiet argument and you and Steve watch in amusement.
As guys come to crowd the bar you and Steve step away and you are reminded why you’re there in the first place. She is across the room, sitting in a booth in the corner chatting with her friend. Wanda looks up and the two of you make eye contact and you smile as you grab Steve’s attention. A soft blush warms her cheeks and she looks away from you. “There she is,” you tell him. Steve isn’t sure who you’re looking at so he lets you lead the way. You join her and her friend in the round booth. “I’m sorry it took so long to find you. This place isn’t usually this busy. Believe me, I used to make the worst tips here.”
Wanda laughs, “Okay, I’ll just have to take your word for it.” The two of you stare at each other for a moment. Not sure how to act around each other in this setting. She takes a drink from her cup and points to her friend. “This is my best friend, Carol Danvers. She’s in the Air Force.” You reach your hand across the table to introduce yourself, mentioning that it was an honor to meet her.
“An honor?” Steve scoffs in offense. “I served six years and you never said it was an honor to meet me.”
“That’s because you’re a nightmare,” you retort.
“I will have you know, I am a delight,” Steve defends himself. “I’m Steve Rogers by the way.” He offers his hand to Wanda first then Carol. “I know, it's an honor to meet me.” The girls laugh at his joke and you shake your head.
You turn to Wanda, “I’m sorry about him. Now you can see why I'm in search of some new friends.”
Wanda nods with her eyebrows raised, “I won't lie, I half expected you to bring Rachel's mom or my brother.” She admits in a laugh. “So, how'd the two of you meet?”
“Here,” you state as you sip your beverage. “We used to work together here.” You tip your glass to her friend who is engrossed in a conversation with Steve about basic training and sharing war stories. “How did the two of you meet?”
Wanda looks at Carol and then looks back at you. “We met at a party in high school,” she shrugs. “We didn't go to the same school, we just knew a few of the same people and became friends that way.”
“Oh that's cool. Which high school did you attend?” Wanda tells you about the high school she attended in another state. Then she goes into how she made her way out here. That she got into the university here and that's where she met Vision. How she got into architecture. She talks about how her parents weren’t ever married and that her father moved out here when she was in middle school. Which is part of what influenced her choice in university. Explains how Pietro followed along shortly after and worked under their father to prepare to take over the construction business for him.
Before she can continue on with her life story, Daisy comes over to the table with a notepad and a few menus. “So my dad is having a bitch fit and now I'm your personal server tonight. Here,” she tosses the menus onto the middle of the table. “I will be back every five minutes. Go.” She walks away and you laugh.
“The service is wonderful here,” Carol says sarcastically.
“Oh yeah, definitely employee of the month,” Wanda chimes in and the two women share a look before laughing at each other. Steve makes a funny face to you and you shrug because you have no clue what their inside joke is. Wanda grabs a menu and turns to you. “What would you recommend?”
“The loaded nachos and that’s it,” Steve cuts into the conversation.
You nod, “Yeah, that’s the only thing that doesn’t go in the toaster oven.”
“A toaster oven?” Wanda scoffs at the idea that an establishment would be allowed to get away with such a thing. But you nod, not showing any sign of the information being a joke. “Wow, okay. Loaded nachos then.”
“My goodness! There you two are!” A woman says as she gets close to the booth. “I have been to three bars looking for you guys. What are we doing here?” She slides in next to you on the booth and she gives you a flirty smile. “Oh, hello,” she winks at you then she leans on the table to talk directly to Wanda. “Now I know why you were ignoring my texts.” She returns her attention to you, “Tell me cutie, are you single?”
Wanda bursts out laughing at your uncomfortable expression as the strange woman strokes your arm. “Agatha, pump the brakes. This is the friend I told you about.”
Agatha stops trying to flirt with you and her eyes widen. “Oh! You’re them! Oh, honey why didn’t you say anything,” She swats your shoulder as she lets out a boisterous laugh. Agatha holds her hand out to you, “Agatha Harkness, pleasure to make your acquaintance.”
You accept her hand and shake it quickly before dropping it. “Nice to meet you as well, I’m Y/n.”
“Oh honey, I know who you are.” She directs her next words to Wanda. “You told me they were cute but you didn’t say they were hot!”
You look at Wanda with raised eyebrows and a teasing smirk. “Yeah, explain yourself, Wanda.”
Wanda opens and closes her mouth as she blushes. She knew she shouldn’t have used any sort of compliment as a descriptor. “I never said Y/n is cute.” She says as she points her finger at Agatha.
“Right, you didn’t say cute,” Agatha gives her a big wink.
“If it evens the score, Y/n told me that Wanda is very pretty,” Phil chimes in as he comes over with a tray of drinks. You had told him the kind of drink you wanted Wanda to try when you texted him earlier about being here. He said that he’d have them ready once you lasted more than ten minutes at the table with her. “If you ask me, Y/n is a little smitten.”
You shake your head, “It’s a good thing no one asked you then.” Steve makes an ooh sound, Carol laughs and Wanda appears a little impressed. “Thank you, Phil. I appreciate everything you do.” You rush out with an apologetic smile.
“You’re lucky I know you,” he says after he clears the tray. “Otherwise I’d pay Steve here to throw you out of here.”
“Oh please, you wouldn’t have to pay me.” Steve says as he grabs his glass, “I’d gladly do it for free.”
You nod your head, “Yup, these are the people I call my friends.”
The two men laugh and Daisy returns to the table. “Know what you want yet?” She asks with her notepad and pen ready.
“Two orders of loaded nachos please,” Steve says. “And a side order of your number,” he winks. Phil smacks the back of Steve’s head. “Ow! I was joking!”
“Behave, I won’t tell you twice,” Phil says unamused while the rest of you try to not laugh.
Steve salutes him, and then looks at Daisy. “I’m sorry, we’ll just have the nachos, please.”
The night continues like that, with humorous bits and teasing. Daisy returns every few minutes to check on the table and you order a couple rounds of shots that you want Wanda to try.  You watch her to see if she likes them and when she makes a comment about how you know good drinks Steve points out that you have a home court advantage. To which Carol suggests a change in venue for an even playing field. You pay for the nachos and some of the drinks as Wanda refuses to let you cover the entire bill.
As you’re leaving The Hub, Daisy pulls you aside while everyone else walks out. You look at her confused and she writes her phone number on a paper in the notepad. She rips it out and slips it in your pocket with a sultry, “Call me.” You find the gesture to be a little funny but you don’t reject her right there. You figure that you’ll probably never use the number. Out of respect to her father and to her. You thank her and walk out the door to catch up with your group.
As they’re walking Wanda thinks of something to ask you and turns around only to find you missing from the group. She looks around and sees the interaction between you and Daisy through the window. Her eyes widen when she sees the girl stick her fingers in your front pocket. She feels a pang of jealousy but she isn’t sure that’s exactly what she is feeling. Maybe she was feeling off from all of the alcohol they were mixing. Why would she be jealous of you getting some girl's number? You seemed close with her father, so you could be receiving that number for any reason. And yet, she couldn’t shake the fact that seeing that intimate interaction bothered her. When you appear in front of her asking where the five of you are headed off to next, she has to snap herself out of her head. She shrugs because she was so focused on herself that she wasn’t paying attention to the rest of them.
Steve points to a place a few buildings down that the group of five make agree to and their way over. This place was more of a nightclub and there is a crazy long line to get inside which you were completely fine with. It gave you some time to talk with Wanda while waiting. She asked you a lot of questions this time, to get to learn more about you. All you talk about is how you’re from this city and go into the details of your family. How you didn’t like being a child of a bitter divorce and that you wanted better for your daughter. Then you talk about the different types of jobs you’ve had since you were fifteen. And you reveal how you’re working towards a business degree at the community college because you’ve always wanted to start your own handmade furniture business. Steve hypes up your work when he overhears that part of the conversation. You awkwardly thank him and next thing you know, the five of you are inside the club.
Once inside, you hate it immediately.  The music is loud making it difficult to hear. It’s hot and the air is thin. It was hard to breathe in anything other than the aroma of alcohol and the smell of other people’s sweat.  The place is full and cramped with sweaty bodies knocking into or grinding on each other which makes it hard to stick together. The flashing and rapidly moving lights are unpleasant and difficult to see through. Wanda grabs the collar of your shirt and roughly pulls you close so that you can hear her, “Can we leave?”
You nod without hesitation and turn around to tell the rest of them that it’s time to go but Carol, Agatha, and Steve have disappeared in the crowd. Wanda grabs onto your jacket with a tight grip so she doesn’t lose you while you search for the other three. You spot Agatha first, she is grinning as she dances provocatively with some random man. Next you spot Carol smiling at a woman as she leans against the bar. Lastly, you find Steve getting excited about spotting a group of guys he recognizes. It’s as if those three were in this place for longer than a few minutes and made themselves very comfortable in the environment.
You wrap your arm around Wanda’s waist to pull her close to talk, “I think we’re just going to have to wait outside for them.” Wanda nods and agrees telling you that she just wants to get out. You guide her through the many bodies that are colliding together as they dance to the booming music until the two of you are finally outside. “Oh my goodness I never thought I was going to breathe fresh air again!” You exaggerate once you’re free.
Wanda laughs, “Oh man I had no idea that’s what those were like! I don’t really see the appeal of a place like that!”
“We’re not drunk enough to enjoy it,” you shrug.
“I guess not,” Wanda looks at you. “Were you a person that could handle a club like that?”
You look back at the building and know that there are photos of you in that place somewhere online so there was no point in lying, it was a part of your life that you’re not proud of but a part no less. You nod, “Before my divorce, no way. I was a full-time parent and spouse. After my divorce however…” you drag out as you’re not sure how else to put it. Wanda nods in understanding but you feel like you still have to explain yourself. “Those first few weeks with no family to come home to were so lonely. I’m sure you know how it is. That quiet and isolation is so suffocating. So, yeah, I lost myself in a place like this.” You think back on that time and your reaction to going into that place back then is very different from how you reacted just now. “It’s been a while though and honestly, I cannot tell you how I did it. I don’t know how they’re doing it now!”
Wanda laughs in agreement, “I guess it’s fun for some people. A nightmare for others. And an escape for those who need it.”
“That’s an interesting observation,” you say. “Did you ever do stuff like this before having the boys?”
Wanda makes a face and looks back at the building then back to you, “No,” she drags the word out.“It always seemed like my worst nightmare and well… I was right.”
You nod, “Yeah, it doesn't seem like your kind of thing. Sorry about that, I probably should have shut this idea down.”
“Don't be, I could have said something, I mean we were waiting in line for like an hour. I was curious and now I'm not.” She says with a shrug. Wanda looks around the street and spots another bar with a calmer setting that also has an outdoor option. “Want to go there?” She points it out and you look it over a bit. If you get a spot close to the railing, Steve and the girls will be able to see the two of you from the club when they exit.
“Sure,” you offer your elbow for her to take. Wanda accepts it and makes a comment about chivalry and you laugh. The two of you cross the street and enter the establishment. It’s the type of place where you have to wait to be seated. So you tell the hostess two for outside and she grabs a couple menus and leads you to the empty corner table you had spotted from the club. You thank her and pull the chair out for Wanda, she looks at you funny. “What? You’re the one who said chivalry wasn’t dead. I have to continue to keep it alive.”
“That’s too bad,” she pulls the other chair out, “because now it’s my turn.” She pats the back of the chair, “Have a seat, Y/n.” You look at the gesture and happily accept it. Wanda walks around to claim her seat, “There, now we’re even.”
“Are we? I wasn’t keeping score,” you open the menu and start to look it over. You have only been here a couple of times and are still relatively unfamiliar with what they carry.
Wanda sits there and stares at you for a moment as read the menu. Not knowing the impact your words had on her. Most of her life has been an ongoing score board. If someone did something nice for her she made certain to do something even nicer, expecting them to do something in return. That’s just how relationships and friendships seemed to happen in her life. It wasn’t until halfway through her marriage with Vision that she realized that behavior wasn’t exclusive to good deeds. The amount of bad things they did to each other until the end of it when Vision won and continues to win… Cracks are starting to break through the rose colored lenses.
“Can I get you two anything to drink to start?” A handsome waiter with a winning smile asks, breaking Wanda out of her thoughts. You tell him that you’re going to have a glass of water and one of the local IPA’s. “And for the pretty lady?” The man doesn’t hide that he is checking her out and though Wanda is flattered by the attention, she wasn’t comfortable with it being from him.
“I’ll just have water,” she says shyly.
“Actually, cancel the IPA, I’ll just have the water,” you change your order. You don’t want to be drinking anymore alcohol if Wanda is stopping. “And I’ll add an order of the grilled bread and good olive oil.” You notice that the waiter isn’t taking his eyes off of Wanda and you notice how she seems to shrink under his gaze. “Would you like another appetizer, honey?” you clear your throat as you ask. Not comfortable with using the term of endearment. Wanda sits up as it sounds foreign from you but she notices that the waiter has finally stopped looking at her.
“Oh um, yeah, babe, you know what I like,” she tries her best to play along as she looks over the appetizers. “You’re so silly, you know that I like the-the… oh! White truffle garlic bread. That’s what I’ll have. For us,” she reaches across the table for your hand, “to share.” You bite your lips to keep from laughing as you nod and throw in a wink.
“Will that be all for now?” The man’s flirty demeanor has changed to a more professional one and you know that although the both of you are horrible at pretending, you’ve been able to pull it off.
“Yes, that’s all for now, thank you,” you say politely. He walks away and once he’s gone, you can’t help but laugh a little. “Oh I think we hurt his feelings.”
Wanda smiles and hums, “That’s what he gets for being creepy.” She removes her hand from yours. “Thank you for that, by the way.”
You wave her gratitude off, “It’s nothing. He should be focused on his job and not making his customers uncomfortable.”
Wanda crosses her arms and leans on the table, “Did you ever pick anyone up when you were a bartender?”
You laugh and shake your head, “No, I was still married when I started the job and then I was enjoying being out of a relationship when the divorce happened. I got to learn a lot about myself in that time.”
“Have you dated since your divorce?”
“I have been on a few dates. But I haven’t committed to a relationship since Jean,” you admit. “And it’s not because I still have feelings for her. Things between us ended for a reason and we’re still friends. That’s what we were always meant to be. But I haven’t met someone that I could introduce to her.”
Wanda makes a face, “What do you mean by that?”
“Well, when she started dating, she kind of made up a system to weed out the people she wasn’t sure if they would work out or not. If she didn’t think she could introduce them to me without a doubt that I would be comfortable with them being around Rachel, then she wouldn’t pursue it. Now she’s happily married to the woman of her dreams,” you elaborate.
“Huh,” Wanda says. The waiter returns with a pitcher of water to fill two glasses and the two plates of appetizers. When he disappears she continues the conversation. “I’ll probably be single forever then,” she says before she drinks her water.
You laugh as you chew on the bread, “Oh yeah, that system is not designed for people like Vision.”
Wanda shakes her head, “Nope. I’m sure he already has a file of every bad thing you’ve ever done prepared for drop off on Sunday.”
“Oh gosh, so you’re saying I shouldn’t have accepted that follow request from hotgurl69?” You say with a smirk.
Wanda stops chewing and stares at you with uncertainty, “You’re joking.”
“No, I’m not,” you grin as you pull out your phone to show her the obviously fake account that followed you during the week. It had a couple of posts of an objectively attractive woman but not someone that is your type. You hand it to Wanda and she shakes her head in disbelief as she looks it over. “I didn’t actually allow the account to follow me but oh that was something to see when I got back.”
“He is a nutjob,” Wanda says under her breath. She blocks the account just for her sanity. “I am so sorry about that,” she returns your phone to you. “That’s ridiculous, he is such a child.”
“There you guys are!” Carol says with a girl under her arm. “These are my friends. That’s Wanda and that’s… Wait. What’s your name again?” She points to you and you smile as you introduce yourself to the girl.
“Hi, I’m Maria Rambeau,” she says with a grin. “It’s nice to meet you guys!”
“Likewise,” Wanda smiles.
“We’re about to head out, I just thought I’d tell you so you didn’t assume the worst. Also, Agatha went home with some Ralph guy. I don’t know. But have fun,” Carol waves as she walks away fast so that Wanda can’t convince her to stay. You and Wanda laugh as the group has gone their separate ways for the night.
You look at your phone to send a message, “I should probably check on Steve and oh! His girlfriend had an emergency and he went home.” You close the phone and put it in your pocket. “I guess it’s just you and me, that is unless you’re ready to go home.”
Wanda looks at the half eaten bread on the table, then to the busy street full of people walking by and businesses that are alive, and then at you. Smiling at her with kind eyes that make her feel special. Eyes that make her nervous in the best possible ways. “No, I’m okay to stay a little longer,” is what she wants to say. But she isn’t sure what would happen if she did stay. How would the night end with just the two of you past this point? Would the two of you go on a stroll and continue to talk? Will there be a moment where the two of you get swept up by some romantic setting and she does something stupid like kiss you? She doesn’t want to risk this growing friendship for something so silly. Besides, you and her brother will be at her house tomorrow fixing her wall. She has already looked foolish in front of you plenty of times in the few weeks that you’ve known each other. She doesn’t need to add to that list tonight.
“Actually, I am a bit tired. Knowing Pietro, I’ll be waking up at six in the morning to let him in,” Wanda explains. “This was really nice, thank you for inviting me out. I haven’t had the courage to do something like this in a while. We should do it again sometime.”
“Yeah, and hopefully something that keeps everyone interested and engaged,” you reply. “I’ll cover the bill, we don’t want to give prince charming over there any reason to make some move on you because I can’t pay for your meal,” you say as you pull out your card.
“Ah well, it’s only appetizers,” she remarks. “If I were him, I’d probably say something about the lack of a three course meal.”
“Oh, no worries,” you say as you wave the waiter over. “I’m two steps ahead of you.” The waiter approaches and you ask for the bill. He makes a face stating that you’ve only ordered appetizers. “Yeah, we got a call from the sitter,” you start and glance at Wanda to see her start to smile. “Six kids is a lot to handle for one person. We rarely ever get to have an uninterrupted evening like this,” you lie easily and Wanda tries to hide her amusement.
“Yeah,” she adds with a disappointed sigh, “And can you believe we’re expecting seven and eight?” She reaches across the table again for your hand and squeezes it with excitement.
The waiter's eyes widen, “Wow uh, congratulations! You could never tell. Since this was a celebration, you know what, the meal is on the house.” You are surprised and insist on paying but he clears the table and allows you and Wanda to leave without paying.
The two of you walk to the end of the street where you’re headed in opposite directions. “My apartment is that way,” you point to the building you’ve called home for the past year and a half. Wanda nods as she makes a comment about the building looking nice. Then she turns and points to the parking garage where she parked her car. “I will see you tomorrow then,” you say awkwardly, not really sure how to end the night.
“Tomorrow,” she repeats, “Goodnight, Y/n.” Wanda walks away and you head home after bidding her a goodnight as well.
When you walk in, the place is quiet other than the soft volume of the television that Kate is watching. “So? How’d it go?” she asks in a whisper.
You shrug as you remove your jacket, “It was fun. Her friends ended up finding people to go home with and Steve had to head back to Peggy. Wanda and I got to spend some time alone and it was nice. Plus, do you remember Daisy? Phil’s daughter?” You are sitting next to your sister on the couch now. Kate nods as the name rings a bell. “Well she’s home from school and she gave me her number.”
“Oh, she has had a crush on you forever,” Kate admits.
You make a face, “Really?” You don’t want to believe your sister, especially not since she is constantly making comments on your lack of a love life. But it does explain why she made the move on you when you hadn’t shown any interest in her all night. “Oh well, I’m not going to call her anyway.”
“Why not? Things go well with Wanda?” She tries to see if you’ll admit that there is anything more than friendship between you and Wanda and you roll your eyes at her attempt.
“You’re insufferable, you know?” Kate shrugs and asks again why you’re not going to use Daisy’s number. “One, it’s none of your business and two she’s Phil’s daughter. That’s weird, I consider him a friend. I can’t just date his little girl without him knowing. Then I can’t end things with her if he does. It’s way too complicated.”
“Is it? Or are you making it complicated?” Kate challenges and not having the energy to even try to argue with her, you get off the couch.
“I’m going to bed. You know how to use the pull out,” you walk to your room. “Goodnight,” you call out to her behind you.
7x11 revealing that coulson is now "a computer genius or something" (thanks yoyo) means that he now probably gets all the programming/hacking jokes daisy has 100% been holding back for years.
can you imagine the shield group chat after she finds out about this.
Every so often I remember that Coulson, Mack and Daisy weren’t alive in the timeline where the world was destroyed, and that the rest of the team had to go through losing them.
Above all, I keep imagining May mourning both Coulson and Daisy (with May seeing Daisy in Robin every time she looks at her) and that truly is hitting me the hardest. I am not okay at all. Good night.
Summary: Grant and his girlfriend met after being recruited to Hydra, and have spent the past decade or so in love as double agents at SHIELD. When they both join Coulson's team and Y/N has a crisis of conscience, however, it might put everything at risk.
Y/N's POV
"I'm just saying, if I went on Chopped, I would've learned not to use the ice cream maker by now. Like I would've watched a single episode before this."
I chuckled, smiling from my spot on the loveseat in the Bus's living room as Skye critiqued the Chopped contestants from the couch. After another successful mission with Coulson's team, the Bus 'kids' had crashed in the living room together to watch Chopped and eat foods that were bad for us. I was tucked under the arm of Grant Ward, my long-time boyfriend and friend, who I'd had to drag in here with us.
"It is kind of wild how often people continue to use it when it almost always goes wrong," I agreed. Skye threw her hands up, pointing one of them at me.
"Thank you!"
"I just want to try to make some of these things now," mused Fitz. "It's made me hungry."
Simmons and I hummed in agreement, and then the group of us fell into comfortable silence as the show came back from its commercial break. I could hear Grant's heartbeat through his chest, and the warm safety and comradery of the room put a warm feeling in my chest. I sighed, looking around at each of my friends while they watched the show.
Suddenly, the warmth in my chest turned to a cold, hard knot.
Soon, I'd be expected to betray these people. Like Grant, I'd been recruited by John Garrett a long, long time ago to be a Hydra agent hidden within SHIELD. Never once had I had a doubt, but sitting here with these people and knowing just how much harm might be on the horizon for them sent my stomach roiling.
"I... think I'm gonna call it a night," I said, standing up abruptly. I didn't bother to keep the discomfort off my face, especially as all my friends turned to me with curious looks.
"Is everything okay?" asked Skye. I gave a little shake of my head.
"I just... feel a little sick to my stomach. Probably it's a tiredness thing. I'm just gonna go lay down, I'm sure I'll feel better in the morning."
"Come see me if you don't," said Simmons, her brow creased in worry. I nodded, promising her and saying hasty goodbyes before turning and heading straight for my bunk. I could feel Grant's eyes following me as I went, but I ignored him.
****************
Over the next few days, the little kernel of doubt that had started in the back of my brain took root. Every time I interacted with any of the team, it grew, leaving me overwhelmed with guilt for the moment I knew was coming, when I'd be asked to betray these people I'd come to love. Especially as we sought the Clairvoyant, the mystical person putting our team at risk, and Grant and I both knew full well that the person in question was John Garrett.
I'd continued to do my job through bullet wounds, freezing temperatures, broken bones, and just about every other hurtle imaginable. But after a few days of fighting through the guilt, I just couldn't stomach it anymore.
"Hey, Grant? Do you have a sec?"
Grant raised an eyebrow, immediately stepping away from the direction he'd been heading to step closer to me, concern written on his face. We knew each other well enough and had been together long enough that he'd definitely noticed something was wrong with me.
"Everything okay?"
"It's just... I don't know Grant, do you ever... wonder if we're doing the right thing? With... uh..."
"You don't have to say it," he said. I bit my lip and nodded, trying to read something in his face. He still looked concerned, mostly for me, which didn't tell me much about how he felt about what I was saying.
"Well... what do you think? I mean, I can't imagine after everything we've been through with this team... just leaving them out to dry."
"I understand how you're feeling," he said, reaching out to take my hand in his. My heart leapt for a second, then dropped all over again as he continued. "But we have to remember what we're doing this for. John Garrett picked us. He pulled us out of terrible situations and gave us the chance nobody else would give us. We owe him. We can't turn on him now."
"Right. Of course, yeah, right." I plastered a shaky smile onto my face and met Grant's eyes. He still didn't look totally convinced, but I leaned up and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek before he could question me. "C'mon, we better get back before they wonder where we went."
"Are you-"
"I'm fine, Grant. Just a little late-game nerves. But I'm fine."
He nodded, looking at least a little more convinced, and we continued through the bowels of the Bus to join our team in the lab. I tried to smile and pretend like everything was normal, but the pit in my stomach had turned into a black hole. For Grant, Garrett had saved his life. He felt loyalty to the man, if not to the cause. But for me? Garrett had recruited me from a less than ideal situation, sure. But he'd sold me on the idea of Hydra, which suddenly looked more like a rotten apple than anything else. I had no personal loyalty to him.
Unfortunately, I did have a lot of personal loyalty to Grant. I spent hours laying awake at night, agonizing over the position I'd gotten myself into, between my boyfriend and best friend and love of my life against every single other person I cared about. I tried to ignore it or push away the worries, to try to convince myself to just ignore the thing telling me to do something, but I just couldn't. Grant clearly wasn't willing to betray Garrett, and I wasn't willing to betray Grant. But I could still do something to warn our team.
Subtly, anonymously, using every skill I'd ever learned as a SHIELD or double agent, I managed to leave enough information with Coulson that he put it together. He didn't waste a single second before telling the rest of the team, and we set up an ambush for Garrett to get him once and for all.
The hardest thing I'd done in my entire life was lying to Grant's face when he pulled me aside, shocked and worried, to try to come up with a plan with me. He'd never asked me if I'd been the one to share the information, because he trusted me. It sent new pangs of horror roiling around in my stomach, but this time I didn't let it get to me. I could tell Grant what I'd done once Garrett was safely in jail, and then we could see if he could forgive me for it.
Unfortunately for me, I never got the chance to have that conversation with Grant. Somehow, Garrett managed to slip through the trap Coulson had laid. His cover was blown, which made him much less of a threat than he'd been before, but he was still out there. The whole team had landed and taken a temporary pause to figure out our next moves when Grant and I got identical texts.
"Garrett's calling us to meet up with him," muttered Grant, sidling up next to me out of earshot of the rest of the team. I nodded.
"What do we do?"
"We have to go to him. He probably needs our help dealing with this mess."
I nodded again, my brain working through all of my possible options. I could just share the text with Coulson, but somehow, that felt like a bigger betrayal than just giving them hints about Garrett. Probably since it would involve Grant, too. And even if he'd never forgive me for what I'd already done, I knew I'd still follow him to the ends of the Earth.
"Should we make up something to tell the team? Or should we just go?" I asked.
We ended up making a quick, somewhat thin excuse to the team, then rushed to where Garrett waited for us. We found him in a beaten-down, empty warehouse, waiting for us with his arms crossed in the back of the space. My heart leapt into my throat, but I kept my face carefully neutral as Grant and I came to a stop before him, side by side.
"Do either of you know why I've called you here?" asked Garrett, not bothering with a hello. His voice had a dangerous edge to it that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up; every instinct I'd honed over the course of years screamed danger.
"To try to deal with SHIELD figuring out who you are," said Grant, with the confidence of somebody who hadn't betrayed the man before us. Garrett scoffed.
"I guess that's technically true. But there was no way for them to find out. There was no way for Coulson and his team to get that information about me, to act with such certainty, as early as they did. At least, there shouldn't have been a way."
His hand wandered to his hip, and he unholstered his gun, holding it lightly in his hand as he considered it for a few moments. He looked back at me and Grant.
"There were only two people with the knowledge and the opportunity to out me. I know it was one of you. So one of you is going to tell me who did it, or I'm just gonna cut my losses and shoot you both."
Like the slow motion part of a movie, I saw Grant turn to me out of the corner of my eye. I took a deep breath before facing him, trying to express just how sorry I was without words. Hurt, shock, betrayal, and disbelief all played out across his face, his brow furrowed, his mouth slightly open. All of it felt like a knife to the heart, a sensation I'd likely experience for real in the next few minutes. I mouthed 'I'm sorry', willing him to believe it, then turned back to face John Garrett.
****************
Grant's POV
My heart stopped as I looked at the woman I loved and realization crashed over me at what she'd done. I knew she hadn't been satisfied after our conversation in the hallway, but I'd convinced myself not to follow up on it. A stupid, stupid decision.
She met my eyes, John still hovering just past us with his gun in hand, and a fear I hadn't felt since I was a kid took root in my stomach. Garrett had warned me, time and time again, and especially when I'd started dating a fellow double agent, that I couldn't trust anybody. My family had proven that from day one, and Garrett had been the only one to consistently be there for me. Now, Y/N had betrayed me like everyone else, and I could see on her face that she was going to do it again.
She mouthed 'I'm sorry' and turned back to John, and I got ready to defend myself after she tried to make me take the fall.
Then, she spoke.
"I did it."
I couldn't believe it. She'd owned up to it, knowing full well Garrett would most likely kill her. She was literally willing to take a bullet for me. A vice tightened in my chest.
****************
Y/N's POV
"I did it."
I spoke the words with a clear confidence I didn't feel at all as I looked Garrett dead in the eye. If I had one thing still guiding my decisions in the wake of everything that had happened and that I'd caused, it was a desire to protect Grant. I loved him, and no matter what else came of this, I didn't want him to take the fall for me.
The silence hung, Garrett staring me down. The hand he held the gun with twitched, and I braced myself to run or fight or I don't know what else, but Grant's voice rang out before Garrett or I could make another move.
"No, I did it."
I whipped around to look at him, and this time it was my turn for wide eyes and a mouth open in shock. Grant didn't look away from Garrett to me, even though I knew he knew I was staring at him.
"Grant, no. You didn't. I did it, and I didn't tell you anything about it."
"No, I-"
He stopped short when Garrett held up a hand, the one without the gun, to stop us both.
"No Ward, you didn't do it. Everyone in this room knows it wasn't you." Garrett strolled the short distance between him and Ward, effectively turning the field so he and Grant stood shoulder to shoulder against me. "But clearly it is a weakness for you."
Grant's eyes widened ever so slightly, and I knew him well enough to recognize it as fear. I shifted on my feet, no idea what to do anymore. Grant seemed to feel the same way as Garrett tapped the gun on Grant's hip.
"Weaknesses have to be weeded out, Ward. Take care of her."
Garrett and Grant both kept their eyes on me, and I could see sweat coming down Grant's face as he slowly reached towards his holster and pulled out his gun. With him and Garrett both armed, I didn't stand much of a chance, even if I was willing to shoot Grant.
As the man I loved raised his weapon, I blocked out Garrett completely. I met his warm brown eyes with my own, silently willing him to ditch Garrett, to choose me like I'd chosen him. My heart pounded in my chest, and in a split second everything changed.
I heard a shot and felt pain explode in my stomach as Grant moved at lightning speed. A moment later, as I sank to the ground, I realized he'd turned to face Garrett. He'd shot his old mentor in the chest, for me, but Garrett had managed to get a shot off before he went down. I brought my hand up to my stomach and touched something warm and wet before the hard concrete of the floor bit into my knees.
"No!" Grant cried, rushing over to me. I screwed my eyes shut and tried to breathe through the pain as he wrapped me in his arms. "Hey, stay with me, alright? Stay with me."
"Grant... you... you shot Garrett."
He grimaced, then tried to fight the expression off his face a moment later. He brushed a strand of hair back out of my face.
"The alternative was shooting you. John may have gotten me out of hell, but you were the first one to make me care about staying here in a long time."
I couldn't quite hold back a choked sob, which sent a flash of panic shooting across Grant's face. Still holding me with one hand, he reached into his pocket with the other and dug out his phone.
"Everything's going to be alright," he said, his voice taking on the calm assuredness we needed for missions. "I'm gonna call Coulson, and when they get here, they're going to help me take care of you. You're going to be alright."
I nodded, turning my head as Grant dialed to look at Garrett. He was splayed out on the floor a few feet away from us, the life clearly gone from his body. I refused to join him.
"They're on their way," Grant announced, setting down his phone once the call ended. "They'll be here soon."
"What did you tell them? About us? What we did?"
"Not a lot, but I'm sure we'll have to explain everything once they get here and you're stabilized."
I nodded. "Grant, I'm sorry. I'm sorry for not telling you, for going behind your back, I just couldn't let our friends get hurt-"
"Shh, it's okay. I get it, alright? I do. We'll talk more about it when you're on your feet again."
"I think you should tell them you were part of it," I continued, forcing the breath out. My vision had started getting darker, and I could feel my consciousness slipping, but I didn't want to be saved only to lose Grant after doing so much to try to save everyone else. "Tell the team you helped me tip them off, that we did it together. Make up whatever lie works but... I don't want to lose you..."
He leaned down, planting a soft kiss on my forehead as the last of my consciousness drifted away. The last thing I heard before everything went black was Grant, his voice low and whispered, echoing after me as I went.
"Don't worry. You could never lose me."
To Loathe or To Love
You were a teacher at Winsford Highschool, a science teacher to be exact. You were currently walking to a meeting with your fellow teachers and the schools principal, Principal Coulson. You walked through to crowd of high schoolers going to their classes and made your way through the doors and into the meeting room.
"Hey everyone, is Phil here yet?" You said as you sat down next to Ms. Romanoff and Ms. Maximoff, who you knew as Nat and Wanda.
"No Mr. Hard ass isn't here yet so we can relax for a bit before everyone else gets in." Natasha said as she chuckled at her own name for him.
"Shh, Nat don't call him that out loud he might come in and hear you!" Wanda said, urging her friend to be a bit more cautious of her words.
"Relax Wan, we all know he's usually 4 or 5 minutes late for every meeting he hosts." Nat said rolling her eyes and she spun in her chair.
You giggled and rolled your eyes at your friends antics. Natasha could be so silly at times and Wanda was usually the one who played the mother hen of the group. You definitely wouldn't have it any other way though.
"So Nat..how was the date last night?" You asked her, she had told you and Wanda that she was going out on a date with the art teacher, Steve Rogers, and you hadn't heard anything about the date yet. To say you were curious was an understatement.
"Yeah! Tell us what happened!" Wanda said as you and her scooted your chairs closer to her.
"Ok ok, so basically we had dinner at his loft, which was decorated beautifully may I mention, and it was just so romantic. We talked and ate, and then he turned the lights down low and played some music and we danced and then afterwards when he twirled me he-"
"Hey ladies, Phil here yet cause I was wondering if-"
"NO!" You three said at the same time as the redhead went back to her story.
"And then he kissed me." She whispered and giggled.
"Awwwww how romantic." Wanda said.
"I know ... of course Steve was so romantic he's the freaking art teacher. He probably knew how to set up everything perfectly...like art-!" You said, slightly wishing you had someone doing that for you as well.
"Uhm hi, sorry for interrupting whatever is.. going on here but have any of you ladies seen Phil..or Steve for that matter. I have to ask him something." Said the man you loathed most. James Barnes. A nuisance he was, and idiot, and most importantly..an egotistical know it all, except he knew nothing. Stupid man.
"No, Mr. Barnes. We don't know where Steve or Phil are. Do you think we'd be here talking the period away instead going to them if we did?" You said condescendingly to James.
Nat and Wanda exchanged glances and sat down watching all the drama unfold. Unbeknownst to you your two best friends had been shipping you with the English teacher for quite some time.
But alas, Natasha and Wanda being the foreign languages teachers, you never knew their opinion about you and Bucky due to them always whispering it to each other in Russian or sometimes Sokovian.
"Well sorry y/n, I should've known you wouldn't be able to answer such a simple question in a civil manner." He said in a very irritated tone.
"You know what-" you got up from your seat but before you could continue Natasha put her hand on your shoulder, making you sit back down. You sighed and pulled out your phone so you could message Phil to see where he was. You realized you left your phone on do not disturb so you turned it off and saw you had an email from Phil.
"Guys I got an email from Phil, maybe he changed the meeting location..I'm reading it now..."
Your eyes widened in horror as you read through the message.
Attention all students and staff members, due to the health code violation 1019.1001 -asbestos, which was found in the laboratory, we will all be evacuating the building at approximately 9:50 a.m. Should there be any emergency, please contact school administration immediately. All classes are to be cancelled as well as faculty meetings for the rest of the week. Under no circumstances are any staff members allowed to stay within the premise of the school building. All closed doors and windows will be automatically shut down and locked immediately, and will only be reopened with staff keys.
-Sincerely
Mr. Coulson
"Holy shit!" You said as you ran towards the door and tried to open it.
"What's wrong?!" Bucky, Nat and Wanda all said at the same time.
"Oh my god everyone evacuated the school because of some asbestos in the building and now we're stuck in here." You said panicking as you tried to look for another exit in the room.
"WHAT?!" Natasha yelled.
"Oh my god, today was supposed to be the last day until break...we're gonna be stuck in here for a week?!" Wanda said while she shook Natasha's shoulders.
"Wait- wait a minute, why did y/n get the email late and everyone else left already? Even better question..why didn't any of US get the email?!" Bucky yelled.
"I didn't get it late I had my phone on do not disturb so my notifications wouldn't interrupt my lesson. Do you guys have your phone on do not disturb?" You said.
"Shit..I do." Bucky said.
"I do too." Wanda said.
"Same." Said Natasha as she groaned.
"Well...how the hell do we get outta here?" You said, kind of scared you all would be trapped in this goddamn school the entire break.
"I think the better question would be what the hell are we supposed to do while we're in here." Natasha said as she got up and walked further into the room.
"Nat? Where are you going?" Wanda said as she watched her friend walk away.
"The bathroom, I've been needing to pee for a while now and I can't do it during my damn classes so might as well now." She said as she opened the door to the bathroom and walked in.
"I didn't know there was a bathroom in the meeting room.." Wanda said as she opened her bag and pulled a snack out, she offered you and Bucky some..you both quickly denied.
"I'm going to see if there are any vents in this room." Bucky said as he got up and started looking around.
"What the hell do you want with a vent?" You said confused as hell.
Was he moronic?
"I see my theories of you living under a rock are correct. Haven't you ever seen a James Bond movie?" He said as he kept looking around.
"What the fuck does James Band have to do with anything?" You said getting irritated.
"Ok first of all, it's James BOND you abomination to fucking society. Second of all, if you've ever seen any of his movies, which I'm now learning you haven't, you'd know that when he was stuck in a room like we are he found a vent and climbed through it, which then led him to the door."
So he was moronic..
"You dumbass, you think the five by four vents in this room are gonna be big enough for one of us to fit in it? Hell, even I couldn't squeeze through one of those, and I'm the smallest out of all of us here." You said.
"Obviously I'm looking for a bigger one you idiot! Every room in this building is required to have a ventilation system that's at least 64 square inches. At least I think the bathrooms do.." he said as he scratched his head.
"Great..so we'll just go to the bathrooms then and-" You looked around the room and realized just how screwed you and Bucky were.
"Wanda and Nat are in the bathroom.."
"So? What's the big deal..let's the ladies relieve themselves.. Jesus." Bucky said chuckling at the odd amount of worriedness in your statement.
"Oh my god you're stupider than I thought, the email said that if the doors are locked then they lock permanently, which will include bathroom doors." You said, enunciating the last five words in your sentence.
This entire day was just turning out to be a shit show..
"Jesus Christ, now they're stuck in there. You think we can maybe break the lock?" Bucky said, worried that Nat and Wanda may be stuck in there for a whole week. He may not have liked you, because he really loved you, but he didn't want them to be stuck there the entire time.
Your phone started ringing and it was Natasha.
"Yeah yeah, before you say anything I know. You're stuck. We're trying to figure out- well I'm trying to figure out how to get you out of there. Idiot over here is just make dumb suggestions."
Bucky glared out you and you chuckled at the little pout on his face. It was cute..as much as you hated to admit it.
"Alright well, just get us outta here..Wanda's getting anxious without her snacks..and I really don't wanna deal with Wanda when she doesn't have snacks."
"Yeah yeah, don't worry we'll find a way to get you out sooner..or later.." you mumbled the last part of that statement and hung up the phone.
"That's heavy duty metal surrounding the door knob, I don't think so. Besides, we have to find another way to get out of here now..seeing as the whole ventilation thing won't work." You said, answering Bucky's previous questions before Natasha had rung you.
You we're contemplating if you should try and hit the lock with the fire extinguisher that was in the corner of the room.
"What do you mean? I thought we were gonna go to the bathroom and get to the ventilation system."
"Wanda and Nat are in the bathroom idiot. And. It's. Locked. Were you not here for like half of our conversation?"
"There's a men's bathroom too dumbass." He said as if it were obvious
"No there isn't, not in the meeting room anyway. It's just one big ass bathroom for every adult." You said
"That's dumb.." he said slightly annoyed that nothing was going right today.
You groaned and took a seat in one of the chairs, your head in your hands. You heard Bucky sigh and he took a seat next to you as well. You felt a large hand on your back, Bucky's hand, he rubbed your back up and down.
"We won't be here forever you know..it'll be ok." He said with a genuine smile..which quickly turned into a smirk as he said his next sentence.
"Besides, you'll get to be with my handsome face for the rest of the week." He said, laughing as you started to not so playfully smacking his arms.
"Hey..can I ask you something?" Bucky said as he took his hand and gently tilted your chin towards him.
"Yeah.."
"Why don't you like me?"
"Because you don't like me..?" You said confused.
"What-? No, you don't like me." He said.
This entire feud started because of miscommunication didn't it?
"No, you started making snarky comments towards me the first month I started working here."
"Yeah because you were pretty much a jerk to me doll." He said with a pained chuckle.
"What? What do you mean I was a jerk?"
"Well you showed interest in me in the beginning of the month when you worked here, pretty much lead me on, then when I bought you flowers and left em on my desk you threw em out and never even told me why."
"I- you bought me those?!"
"W- yeah, you didn't know?"
"NO! I- I thought they were from Brock.."
"Why would they be from BROCK?!"
"Because he was hitting on me in the staff room..and then told me you didn't like me..." You said, a bit ashamed this got so out of proportion.
"What- doll. God of course I liked you and- wait Brock was hitting on you?"
"Mhm." You said
"Son of a bitch, I should go knock his fuckin teeth out for all the issues we had to go through and-"
You cut him off by giving him a kiss on the lips. It was soft and slow and passionate and all the little things you needed to confess. His hand combed through your hair and the other wrapped around your waist. Both of your hands instantly wrapped around his neck and you both savored the teaste of one another.
"Hey guys there was an emergency key in one of the stalls and- WHAT THE FUCK-?" Natashas eyes popped out of her head as she witnessed the scene unfolding in front of her.
"YES! I knew it would happen eventually!" You heard Wanda say, and you giggled a bit at their antics.
"What was that about an emergency key Nat?" Bucky said, still a bit out of it from the kiss you two shared.
"Well there was an emergency key in a stall and I'm pretty sure it opens all locks."
"Finally! Let's get the hell outta here." You shouted and all of you ran to the door and Natasha unlocked it. You guys proceeded to unlock all doors in your way and you all finally made it outside.
"Well ladies, and man, it's been a pleasure but I should really go now..I gotta see a certain artsy blonde about something." Said Nat as she walked to her car saying her goodbyes and drove off.
"I should probably get going too, my Vis is probably worried sick!" Wanda said as she gave you a quick kiss on the cheek and said bye to Bucky. She got in her car and drove off as well.
"Who's Vis-?"
"Her husband." You said.
"Oh. Well uhm, do you have a ride..or-?"
"Oh no, I came without my car today..a ride would be nice thank you." You said sheepishly.
"Of course doll, c'mon." He said as he wrapped an arm around your waist and you both walked to his car.
"Hey uhm..would you like to come back to my place for some early dinner..? You don't have to say yes or anything I was just-"
"That'd be great Buck, as long as this isn't a one time thing..?"
"Definitely not doll."
"Well let's go!" You said as you gave him a small kiss on the cheek and you both walked to the car.
"It's a helicarrier." Fury explained, seeing your wide eyes staring up at the great big aircraft. "A mobile command center and forward operations platform."
"It's not gonna carry me to hell, is it?"
"Not if you keep the peace."
"Right." You nodded, unsure. "It's good, I'll give you that. Sustained and independently-powered flight judging from the turbine engines. Looks familiar now I think of it."
Fury looked at you as you approached a drop-down ramp, impressed. "I'd hope so. Part of the designs were made by your grandfather decades ago."
"What?" You turned. "That guy is full of surprises."
"We've noticed most Starks tend to be. This helicarrier is hopefully the first of many. Perhaps you could put your skills to use and provide upgrades for it."
"I'd have to check the schematics and do some white box testing for the engines and see what the electrics are compatible with. And I'll need to be on the whitelist. If you have one of those."
"Of course we do."
"Good. Is there anything else I need to know about... It?"
"We have a WEP-secured network, multicast broadcasting, and traceroute and trackback."
"That's a lot of website-based add-ons. What about defenses?"
"Retro-reflective panels and radar cloaking."
You nodded in response and entered the aircraft. You stared in awe, coming into what seemed to be a loading bay. It was filled with many goods ranging from tiny widgets and tools to enormous piping or guns. This area alone seemed bigger than the entire warehouse. You could only imagine what else could fit inside.
"Ms. Stark."
You turned to see who must have been another agent approaching. Like all the others, he was dressed like a packet of silk cut. However, he seemed more friendly than the others, wearing a smile instead of a stony look like everyone else.
"Agent Coulson." Fury introduced, motioning between the two of you.
"It's a pleasure." He said, holding out a hand.
You shook it. "Hello, agent."
As he exchanged some words with Fury afterwards, you couldn't help observing him. He looked familiar, like someone you might pass on the street, but you couldn't figure it out.
"I'm sorry, have we met before?" You decided to speak up.
Coulson turned with a knowing look on his face. "Not officially."
"Not officially?"
"The Stark Expo last week. I saw you take down a Hammer drone with consummate elegance."
You smiled a little. "Tell that to the bruised ribs I ended up with."
"Coulson here recommended you to us." Fury explained. "He said you have potential."
"Well, I'm flattered." You showed off the smile on your face. "So this Triskelion. What's it like?
-
It was pretty amazing.
The Triskelion was built along the Potomac River on Theodore Roosevelt Island as an enormous complex that occupied almost all of the island. Its central structure was composed of three very tall columnar buildings supporting a shared circular top.
As you were guided through it, your face disguised as not to be recognized, you were given a brief overview of what the large building housed.
There was the main atrium as well as many operating rooms. It contained Fury's office, the chambers of the World Security Council, work spaces and labs, interrogation cells, and a landing ground outside. It was aweing and you wondered just how advanced SHIELD was based on all this alone.
You couldn't believe your grandfather helped make this possible. He was a founder of this.
"This will be your lab." Coulson explained as he and Fury took you to the end of another long hallway.
Pushing the door open, your face showed a mix of reactions, mostly intrigue and curiosity. It was a wide and open space, very ideal, filled with advanced tech lining the walls and several tables to place work or research. It was every inventor's dream.
"This is..." You could barely speak due to smiling. "Amazing."
"And it's all yours." Fury said. "This will be your place of work out of assignments or commissions. You won't be disturbed unless it's end of the world urgent."
You raised a brow. "And will there be any 'end of the world' urgencies?"
He didn't answer which was very unsettling, but you weren't surprised.
-
A few hours later, you were called up to Fury's office and were waiting patiently for him to arrive. There was a news report playing in the corner about an attack on Culver University involving the ever annoying military and some kind of creature.
"Rumors continue to swirl about a violent clash between forces of the US military and an unknown adversary on the campus of Culver University earlier today. Sophomores Jack McGhee and Jim Wilson witnessed some of the battle."
The camera changed from the destruction to two boys. "It was so big! It was, like, this, like, hulk!"
It cut back to the reporter and displayed some footage. "McGhee, who happens to be a reporter for the campus paper, captured this on his cell phone. Further search for the mysterious Hulk was postponed by powerful thunderstorms in the Smoky Mountain National Forest."
You tilted your head when you saw this 'Hulk'. It was big and green and seemed to have a constant expression of anger on its face. However, there was something about the eyes that still seemed somewhat human. Perhaps it wasn't a monster after all.
"Interesting, isn't it?" Fury's voice spoke up from behind.
You turned to face him. "That's one word for it, yes. Who is it?"
There was a pause in which he clearly debated on telling you what he knew, but ultimately decided against it and walked behind his desk.
"I have several matters to discuss with you. All of equal importance."
"Oh?" You nodded, motioning for him to go on.
"Think of these as your first assignments."
"Wait, already? I've been here three hours."
"Trust me on this." He waited for you to nod before continuing. "At the Expo, you saved a boy. Do you remember that?" Your brows furrowed. "The kid in the Iron Man mask? What about him?"
"His name is Peter Parker. He lives with his aunt May and uncle Ben in a small apartment in Queens. His parents were good friends of mine before they died in a plane crash some time ago. He's a smart kid, very talented and promising, and he admires your father. I want you to keep a permanent home in New York so you can watch over him. Ben knows about this and he's more than happy to accommodate you."
You listened and thought about it in great detail. "So you want me to move to Queens and look after this Parker kid?"
"I do. He's had trouble in the past with an older boy who wasn't exactly the kindest of souls and hurt him. He needs someone to guide him and help him cope. You suit this role whether you believe it or not."
A sad frown was on your face when you realized what he meant by 'trouble' and 'hurt'. No kid should have to deal with that.
"Okay. I'll do it." You nodded again. "What else did you need me for?"
"Ah, yes. There's been calls and reports about an unidentified object landing in New Mexico about fifty miles into the desert. I would like you to analyze this and see if you can't remove it. You won't be alone, Agent Coulson will accompany you."
-
The next night you were on the road with Coulson heading to New Mexico where some atmospheric disturbances had been happening.
You had stayed up all night and most of the day creating something to help remove the unidentified object Fury had been telling you about. Apparently it was a hammer of some kind but he didn't elaborate much.
As you looked out the window, you couldn't help but smile. At night, even the deserted lands seemed beautiful. The sky was a velvety navy shade and the stars twinkled like tiny diamonds up above. You could see sandy plains and dusty mountains silhouetted underneath these little diamonds and it seemed almost magical. For a moment, you forgot you were a teenage runaway sent on a mission by a super secret government agency. In fact, just the idea of that seemed preposterous.
Until your stomach gave a mighty rumble and you were thrown back into reality, cheeks flaming in embarrassment as you glanced at Coulson who only seemed amused by it.
"Hungry?" He joked.
You laughed a little and nodded. "That obvious, agent?"
"Well the good news is there's a gas station just a mile down the road. We can make a stop there if you can hold on that long."
"I think I can manage."
The two of you shared a smile before you looked out the window again, feeling the nagging in your stomach as it craved sustenance.
Before long, you came to a stop at the gas station. You unbuckled your belt and stepped outside the car, stretching as the night air wrapped around you.
As the car filled up, you and Coulson walked into the tiny food mart. The woman behind the counter didn't seem too interested but acknowledged your presence with a courteous smile before going back to staring at the floor. Your stomach growled and you quickly shushed it before heading over to grab something.
You picked up a pack of sour patch kids and a bottle of water before joining Coulson again. He was crouched by one of the shelves, looking torn between powdered donuts or frosted donuts.
"Hands up! Don't move!" Someone suddenly shouted.
Your heart stopped and glanced up at the mirror in the corner to see two men with guns pointed at the woman behind the counter. As they threatened her, you decided to try and distract them. However, Coulson simply grabbed your arm and shook his head, saying he had it under control. You stayed hidden and watched as he stood up.
"Who else is here?" One of the men asked the woman. "Who owns the car outside?"
"I do." Coulson spoke up. "But it's really more like a lease."
The second man turned abruptly and pointed his shotgun at him. "Toss the keys over here. Come on."
He did as asked and the robber caught them, stuffing them in his pockets. Then they turned back to the woman who had her hands raised and was crying.
"Empty the cash register." The first one ordered, taking out a bag. "Start filling this bag with cigarettes."
"Excuse me." Coulson said, getting their attention again. "I also have this gun. You'll probably be needing that."
"Put it down!" They both yelled. "Put it down right now!"
"Okay, don't want any trouble." He said, raising his hands in surrender.
"Toss the piece over here then."
"I prefer not to throw it and risk the gun accidentally going off. Maybe I could slide it over?"
They shared a look, confused. "Yes. Slide it over to my feet. Don't try anything funny."
"Okay. I'm just gonna move over to this aisle. I'm gonna slide it over to you."
He slowly moved past you, still hidden, and into the next aisle as he said. You were just as confused as the robbers, wondering what he was planning to do.
He did as he said would and slid the gun over. However, as one of the men knelt down to pick it up, Coulson suddenly grabbed a bag of flour and tossed it at the second man, causing it to explode in his face and stun him. He then ran forward and used one of the shelves for a boost, jumping up and kicking the shotgun out of the first man's hands. He grabbed that next and pivoted, hitting both of them in the face and knocking them out cold with ease.
You stared, your jaw dropping in pure amazement, and slowly stood up. The woman behind the counter was just as stunned and you walked over, awkwardly placing your items on the counter.
"That was so cool." You said. "Can you be my new bestie?"
Coulson gave you a smile before turning to the other woman and putting down both the powdered and frosted donut packets. "Sorry for the mess. I couldn't decide."
He handed the money over but she only stared, afraid to speak and struggling to process what she'd just witnessed.
"Keep the change." He told her, picking up the items.
"Wait." She finally managed to say. "What should I tell the police?"
"Tell them those Tae-Bo tapes really paid off."
-
The next day, you arrived at the site. It was incredible how many people were already there.
A parking lot had been made, most of the cars pickup trucks or RVs, and dozens of men, women, and children alike were gathered around a huge crater in the earth. They had picnic blankets, coolers, tents, and even a barbecue set up. All for this hammer that supposedly couldn't be moved. From the looks of things, they'd even tried chaining it to one of the pickups but it was too heavy even for that and tore off the end of the truck.
"Is this it?" You asked, squinting past the sun to get a good look.
"This is it." Coulson confirmed, taking out his phone and dialing a number. He waited a few seconds for the person to answer. "Sir. We've found it."
Like magic, SHIELD trucks arrived over the course of a couple hours and quickly dispersed the gathered crowds. They set up a small compound around the hammer, many of the agents trying to lift it as they worked. You hadn't yet and were very desperate to do so but waited until it was all set up and you could do your thing.
You called in some help to lift the different parts of your invention over to the hammer but made sure to get rid of them so you could set it up without interference. It was a fairly simple design, a claw that used the weight of the object it was lifting to apply the right pressure and strength when lifting.
You set the clamps up, straightened the limbs of the support, and then moved the claw in place, the three steel arms positioned above the handle of the hammer. And, naturally, you couldn't resist trying yourself first.
You put a hand around it and lifted.
For just a split second, you could have sworn it budged from the rock it was stuck in. But it ultimately stayed in place. The reports weren't lying when they said it was like trying to lift the world itself. You hoped your little machine would work.
And so you stepped back, taking a breath before activating it. Many lingering agents turned to watch as it gave out a mechanical whir and the claw attached itself to the handle. You waited anxiously, praying it would work, but quickly found yourself losing hope when the entire thing began creaking. The ground beneath the clamps cracked and shattered under the pressure and just a second later sparks were sent flying as the claw completely snapped off from the rest of the machine, causing it all to fall.
It took a good minute for you to process that the hammer had destroyed your invention. Hours of working without a single break had amounted to nothing. You cursed extremely loudly.
"Screw you!" You shouted at the hammer before kicking the broken machine. You winced as pain shot through your foot and pointed at it as you hopped around. "And screw you too!"
-
In just twenty-four hours, your faith had been shaken considerably. You remained in New Mexico even after your invention failed, hoping to find a different way to lift the damned hammer. But the reason your faith was shaken?
You had seen things unexplainable and incomprehensible in nature.
Shortly after SHIELD captured and later released a man named Donald who broke into the compound to try and lift the hammer, the small town nearby was attacked by something very huge and very dangerous named the Destroyer. It was a seemingly indestructible automaton.
It dispersed most of the SHIELD team who were there to witness its arrival but you were one of the few who managed to follow it into town. There, three people dressed like they belonged at a renaissance fair attacked it. It managed to defeat them and the same man who SHIELD caught before offered himself to it.
You thought he was dead after it smacked him away, but the hammer, the curious and unmovable thing that had puzzled everyone, flew right into his hands and he seemed to regain some sort of power. His shirt and pants were replaced by armor and a billowing red cape. He managed to get rid of it with ease after that.
You had just witnessed all of this and couldn't stop blinking repeatedly as it sunk in. How was it possible? How could one man do all that? And how could he lift the hammer so easily? And why did the hammer seem to conduct lightning? Was the guy some kind of Thor wannabe from Norse mythology? He seemed to fit the description. But surely that wasn't possible.
"Excuse me!" Coulson called, you and him walking forward.
You had to stop short and take a sharp intake of breath at being so close to this 'Donald'.
He was hot.
Like the hottest being you had ever seen. You probably would have swooned or fainted if you didn't have self control.
"I don't think you've been completely honest with me." Coulson was telling him.
"Know this, Son of Coul. You and I, we fight for the same cause, the protection of this world." He said. "From this day forward, you can count me as your ally, if you return the items you have taken from Jane."
A brunette came forward. "Stolen."
"Borrowed." Coulson retorted. "Of course you can have your equipment back. You're gonna need it to continue your research."
She seemed happy with that and the Thor guy you were still drooling over looked down at her. "Would you like to see the bridge we spoke of?"
"Uh... Sure." She nodded.
He grinned and pulled her close, causing her to laugh.
"Wait, I need to debrief you." Coulson said, only to be ignored as they suddenly shot into the air.
"I don't think he cares." You finally spoke up, staring at the sky. "I can't believe he can lift that thing."
"It's pretty cool, right?" Another dark-haired woman with glasses said.
"It destroyed my invention."
"Still pretty cool."
Still looking up, you scoffed. "I can't argue with that."
-
It had been a year and a half since Thor visited earth. You had been at work as a SHIELD engineer and inventor and it was honestly the best thing to happen to you.
You had the alias of Ellen Campbell, as well as a new bank, ID, and social security number. You frequently changed your look to blend in and travelled between states quite a bit for when different bases needed you. You had an apartment in Queens now as well. After keeping your distance when watching over Peter, you had been instructed to become more involved in his life which you were happy to do so.
You were at the SHIELD facility now after receiving an urgent call from Fury. You found yourself again becoming awestruck by what he had to show you.
Tumblr media
Helicarriers and quinjets seemed unimportant when compared to things such as norse gods and superheroes. You were staring at the thawed body of Captain America. Everyone thought he'd gone missing and died during WW2 but apparently he was just frozen under ice after a plane crash. It was... Amazing. "My dad won't like him." You commented, still smiling as you and Fury watched over him.
"Why's that?" Fury asked.
"Because Captain Rogers got to know my grandfather more than he ever did. Howard mentioned him a lot apparently. I would recommend keeping them apart unless absolutely necessary."
He nodded. "Advice noted."
"Coulson will be happy, though. My favorite agent gets to meet his hero. I hope I'm there."
So what really irritates me about The Avengers first movie is that no one notices the state Loki is in? Like you have super geniuses, super spies etc etc and yet no one notices the blatantly obvious signs of harm on Loki? Not even his brother?
So you have Thor :
Tumblr media
Literally a picture of health, skin glowing, not a hair out of place, could be a in a L’Oréal advert and not be out of place all this after getting into a scrap of with Tony and of course he looks good! He’s a GOD!
So, so, it stands to reason does it not that a LOT has to happen to a Æsir/ jötunn for them to start looking rough correct? Because they’re long lived and strong and powerful and call themselves gods etc etc
So why the fuck did no one notice Loki’s looking a little rough and maybe put together that some shits happened to him? I mean I get it he’s the villain, the antagonist yada yada but surely THOR should’ve realised that something was up with his brother? I mean Thor did defend Loki. Couldn’t he have been like ‘oh, he’s not acting right think the cubes fucking with him, also mans loooks like hes been tortured can we check on that?’
Loki:
Tumblr media
Yeaaaaa he’s looking great! The greasy hair, the sweat on his skin, the wild eyed look, the sallow skin- sorta gaunt looking- almost as if he’s been starved. Love the bags under his eyes very on point the absolute panic you can see on him, the desperation how he’s barely holding it together sometimes. In other scenes you can see the chapped lips as if he’s dehydrated or someone’s withheld water from him gee I wonder who’d do that? Thanos maybe?
How come no one notices just how bad Loki looks? When they had him captured Nick fury the ultimate spy didn’t notice the signs? Tony stark the genius who’d been tortured himself didn’t notice? Thor the brother that loves him didn’t notice the state he was in? Didn’t connect the dots that he looks terrible and is clearly acting out of character? Bruce banner didn’t notice? After being hunted down himself? Steve rogers? Who’d SEEN Prisoners of war? Rescued them? Natasha didn’t notice? The one who’d been tortured and probably done some torturing?
I mean damn :/ it’s infuriating
Completely random thought, but May would totally be the type of person to say she dislikes cats- and pets in general- but you know if someone brought one home, she’d be the first to have it on her lap constantly, defend it with her life and treat it better than she’d treat any human ever.
Also, adding onto that, just imagine May and Coulson adopting a cat or dog.
Coulson would totally be the type of pet-dad to dress it up in cute costumes and stuff too- plus Daisy and the rest of the team would fuel that by buying it many of said costumes and staging photoshoots, etc. While May would just be like, “stop tormenting the poor thing” and opt to ‘save’ it from them every time.
Daisy would also claim that said pet is the “favourite child”, and start a low key sibling-like rivalry with it (but love it at the very same time), I just know it.
In conclusion, the team should’ve had a family pet idc, Fitz was right (maybe not a monkey, but y’know)
Art is Chaos
Grant Ward x Reader
Tumblr media
Masterlist - Join My Taglist!
Written for Fictober 2022! Requested by anon
Fandom: Marvel
Prompt: "Adaptable, I like that"
Summary: Ward's going undercover in his nightmare scenario - as a hippie art teacher named River. He'll need all his training to pull this one off, but the combination of a pretty girl and a terrible coincidence of his co-art teacher being named Grant might be too much for even Agent Grant Ward's training to manage.
Word Count: 3,541
Category: Uhhhh probably like fluff with humor and a little bit of angst?
A/N: Guysssss this is my 500th post! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Here’s to 500 more I guess lol!
Putting work into an AI program without permission is illegal. You do not have my permission. Do not do it.
Grant's POV
"I'm going undercover as an art teacher? Sir, you've got to be kidding me."
"What's the matter? Don't think you can pull it off?"
I scoffed and crossed my arms, looking at Coulson still sitting behind his desk. He just stared back at me, his face completely blank. I hated how easy it was for him to get under my skin.
"Of course I can do it," I replied, knowing full well I was giving him exactly what he wanted. "I just don't think 'art teacher' is really my type."
"What is your type, Agent Ward?"
I fell silent, unable to come up with an answer that didn't sound like a five-year-old would say it. I huffed and looked at the ceiling, then turned back to Coulson with a slight scowl.
"Fine. We'll stick with the planned cover. But if Skye or FitzSimmons says anything, I'm throwing the nearest can of paint in their faces."
The corner of Coulson's mouth quirked up. "Duly noted. Now get going, we don't have a lot of time. The sooner you get teaching, the sooner we catch our target trying to arrange an illegal technology buy in the middle of your class."
"Yes sir."
I nodded and headed out of the room, trying not to look too bothered as I passed Skye on my way to grab my bag. The last thing I needed was her or anyone else asking questions about my cover.
The world outside the bus was about to meet River West, the hippie art teacher from Portland, but I didn't need anyone on the bus besides Coulson to know about him.
Y/N's POV
I smiled to myself as I pulled open the door to the painting studio just a few blocks from my apartment. It had been open for a while now, and had been offering art classes for months, but today was the first time I'd actually gotten around to taking one.
The studio was bright and airy, with tables and easels set up all around the room. Several of the easels were already taken, and two men stood chatting at the front. I wandered over to an easel in the middle, which stood right beside one a friendly-looking woman already stood at.
"This easel taken?" I asked as I approached. She turned to me with a friendly smile and shook her head.
"Not at all, be my guest."
I nodded my thanks, then dropped my bag and took a second to look over the various art supplies piled around my canvas. I hadn't painted in a long time, but I'd seriously loved doing it when I was in high school, so I couldn't have been happier to have the chance to do it again.
Once I was satisfied with my setup, I turned back to the woman next to me with a smile.
"I'm Y/N, by the way," I said, holding out my hand for a shake. She took it and smiled back at me.
"Sarah. It's nice to meet you."
"Nice to meet you too, Sarah. So, have you taken one of these classes before?"
"Oh, yeah. I absolutely adore painting, so any chance I find to get behind an easel and spend the day like this, I take it."
"That's awesome," I said, completley meaning it. "I want to paint more often, so maybe I'll follow your lead."
"You should. The teachers are all great, too, although that guy on the left is new."
She nodded towards the tall, handsome man with dark hair, and I watched as he set up the last few supplies for the class. After a second, I realized I'd been staring, and turned to find Sarah grinning at me.
"I guess he's already got one fan," she teased. I felt my face heat up, and I waved my hand at her in a shushing motion, but she just laughed. Mercifully, I was spared from further teasing by the beginning of the class.
"Alright everybody, welcome to Art and Soul," said the guy I hadn't been staring at. He smiled out at all of us, his bright red hair fitting in with the bright colors around the rest of the room. "I'm Grant, and this handsome man to my right is River."
River, the one Sarah had caught me staring at, gave us all a smile and nodded with his hands behind his back.
"We're going to be your instructors for today," Grant continued. "Don't hesitate to ask us if you have any questions or need anything, and remember, there's no 'right way' to do art. The most important thing today is that everyone has a good time. So, without further ado, let's get to painting, yeah?"
We all let up a small cheer, and I smiled as I focused in on both instructors. They walked us through the basic steps of a painting we could create if we wanted to, and I decided I might as well follow the prompt, at least for today. After doing a quick pencil sketch to get an idea of the lines and shapes I wanted to build, I was finally painting again, and damn it felt good.
After the first few minutes, the teachers started walking around to look over our paintings and see if we needed any help. I tried not to freak out too much when I saw River, the handsome teacher, coming my way.
"Hey, this is looking good," he said, coming to a stop beside me. He gestured at the different brushstrokes on my canvas before looking at me with a smile. "You've got some real talent here."
I felt the heat rush to my cheeks as I glanced down at the floor. River didn't budge, just stayed right over my shoulder until I finally looked up at him. He grinned right back.
"Thanks," I said. "I haven't done it in a while, so we'll see if it stays this good, but..."
"Hey, what's the matter, you didn't hear my co-teacher earlier?" he asked, hands on his hips and a small smile on his face as he fixed me with a look. "There's no such thing as bad art."
My lips slowly pulled up into a smile, and I nodded to River.
"Thanks."
"Anytime. I'll be back in a few, alright?"
I nodded my thanks, and River shot me a wink before striding off to the set of easels behind me. I stared straight ahead at my canvas while I tried to get my giddy expression under control. I finally widened my horizons from my tunnel vision when I felt more confident, only to find I hadn't done a very good job.
"So... River, huh?"
I threw my hands over my face as Sarah gave me a sly look. She just laughed, and I sighed as I picked up my paintbrush and tried to distract myself by adding some brushstrokes to the canvas. Sarah nudged me and I shook my head, but I couldn't keep a smile off my face.
"What do you want me to say?" I finally sighed. "He's handsome."
"That he is," she chuckled. "No judgement here. You go get him."
We carried on working with minimal River interruptions for a while, as my painting of the ocean beyond the trees of the forest started to take shape. I set down my larger paintbrush and looked over my remaining supplies for a wiry brush to make the leaves of the trees, but it was missing.
I looked around, but both River and his co-teacher Grant were busy. Sarah was across the room talking with another student, and I didn't want to interrupt any of them, so that meant I needed to improvise.
I furrowed my brow as I looked around for inspiration, finally finding it when my eyes landed on my bag. I dug around for a few seconds then pulled out a handful of bobbypins and a hairtie. Perfect.
I used my hairtie to bind the narrow ends of the bobbypins together, and then dipped the splayed-out unconnected ends into the green paint. I gave them a few experimental swipes over my trees in the furthest corner to make sure I liked the way it looked, and was pleased to find that I did.
Art hacking like a pro.
Now that I had all the tools I needed, I completely zoned in on perfecting my pine trees. The world around me faded away as I worked, and I lost myself in my painting so much that I didn't even notice River showing up beside me until he spoke.
"You're using bobbypins as a paintbrush?"
I jumped, jerking my makeshift paintbrush up and thankfully away from the canvas. I laughed as the adrenaline faded a little, looking to River with a smile.
"Geeze, you scared me," I breathed.
"Sorry. You were really into your painting, weren't you?"
"I mean, yeah. You must know how it gets when you're in the zone."
River looked down and nodded, but didn't say anything. His lips were pursed and he didn't meet my eyes until a few moments later, with a smile on his face again.
"So... the bobbypins?"
"Oh! Yeah, I didn't have a wire brush, and you and the other teacher were busy," I explained. "I was gonna borrow one from Sarah, but she was talking to somebody on the other side of the room, so I improvised."
River glanced from me to Sarah when I mentioned her, but his eyes quickly came back to me. His smile had dropped for a second before returning, and he leaned in a little closer to me.
"Improvising art supplies," he said, sounding impressed. "Adaptable, I like that."
I pressed my lips together tightly to try to suppress my smile and glanced down at my feet again. When I looked back up at River, his eyes were still on me, a kind smile on his face. We held each others' stares for a few beats, and it was like he had his own gravity, pulling me slowly towards him. The distance between us closed, bit by bit, and I thought we were actually going to kiss in the middle of an art class before something seemed to snap River out of it.
He pulled back quickly, his eyes darting to a place over my shoulder before looking back at me. He cleared his throat, for once looking as flustered as I felt.
"I'll, uh- hm, I'll be right back. Sorry."
With that, he hurried off to the other side of the room. I watched him go, unable to help the disappointment pooling in my chest. What had happened?
I tried to shake it off as I turned back to my painting. I'd finished with the trees, so I didn't have to go back to the bobbypins, and Sarah was mercifully on the other side of the room so she couldn't tease me about anything.
The class continued, and River mostly kept to the other side of the room. Sarah floated between the easel next to mine and one in the back left corner, but she never failed to bring up River when she came back to our neighboring canvasses. Despite the unexpected stressors, however, I still found myself enjoyinig the experience.
Finally, it was time for me to put the finishing touches on my painting. Once the last brushstrokes were in place, I took a step back to admire my handiwork. It certainly wasn't perfect, but that was just part of the art. I'd had fun making it, and I liked the way it looked, so as far as I was concerned, it was a success.
The only thing left to do now was to sign it. I glanced down at my station, but all my brushes were filthy with other colors, and the pencil marks would fade faster than I wanted them to. I debated digging into my bag and seeing if I could find some liquid eyeliner, but for my signature on my masterpiece, I didn't really want to find an improv solution.
I glanced up and scanned the room for River, but he was in the far back corner again, hovering around the easel that Sarah kept visiting. Sarah, this time, was next to me, one eye on River. I sighed heavily and decided I didn't want anything to do with that, especially since I was here for a nice, relaxing day of art. I turned and found the other teacher, Grant, instead.
"Grant!" I called across the room. The redhead turned, but out of the corner of my eye, I saw River whirl around too. I turned to look at him, and found Sarah staring at him from next to me too. Nobody moved for a few beats, and a strange silence fell over the room. Then, the man at the canvas Sarah kept visiting whirled around with lighting speed and levelled a punch at River.
"Oh my God!" I cried. I thought for sure he was about to be laid out, but he ducked the punch with lighting reflexes of his own. Before I could blink, he returned fire, knocking the guy out in a single punch as the rest of our class screamed and ran for the exits.
"I knew it," I heard Sarah mutter as she dug into her bag. To my shock and horror, she pulled out a gun and started heading across the room for River.
The room was basically empty now, aside from me and Sarah. River had disappeared in the chaos, although Sarah was clearly searching for him as she prowled across the room. I took a few terrified steps backwards, away from her, trying not to make any noise or sudden movements.
I kept moving backwards, and thankfully, Sarah didn't notice me. I felt like I was about to have a heartattack, but I forced myself to stay calm as I slowly edged backwards. It all crumbled in an instant, however, when a hand clamped over my mouth and a strong arm wrapped around my waist before pulling me backwards.
I started to scream, but it quickly died in my throat as I was yanked around a corner, out of sight of Sarah. My back hit the wall, but not very hard, and I came face to face with River staring at me intensely.
"I'm gonna take my hand off your mouth," he said, his voice soft and barely above a whisper. "Don't scream, alright?"
I nodded, and slowly, he pulled back his hand. I stared at him, trying to calm my racing heartbeat, but considering the events of the last few minutes I really couldn't do much.
"What. The hell. Was that?" I hissed, finally finding my breath. River grimaced and looked at the ground.
"A rookie mistake," he muttered. I raised my eyebrows and gave him an exaggerated look, so he sighed and continued. "My name's not River."
"What?"
"My name is Grant Ward-"
"Whoa whoa whoa, Grant? Like, the other art teacher Grant?"
River–Grant, apparently–huffed an irritated sigh. "Believe me, I was so much more pissed about that than you."
"Why did you need a fake name to be an art teacher?"
"I'm not an art teacher. I'm a SHIELD agent, here undercover to find your friend Sarah and her buddy in the back of the classroom. They've been using this space as a cover for meetups and scheduling illegal trades of highly dangerous alien technology."
My mouth dropped open, and I couldn't do more than gape at Grant in shock. He gave me a sympathetic look, then took a step back.
"You need to get out of here," he said. He nodded down the hallway, where there was a back exit out of the building. "Go meet up with everyone who's out on the street. You'll be safe out there."
"Wait! What about you?"
"I'll be fine. This is my job, I'm used to it."
With that, he ducked back around the corner and into the room where Sarah presumably still waited with a gun.
I stared after him, completely unsure what to do for a few beats. I glanced back at the door behind me that Grant had pointed out, and took a few steps in that direction when I heard Sarah's now-familiar voice.
"You really had it bad for her, didn't you, Grant?" she taunted. "That was an embarrassingly stupid mistake you made, giving away your identity just because a pretty girl called your real name."
I grimaced. I needed to get out of here. Grant was trained, and I was not. I had no idea what I was doing. I'd probably get in the way and be more harm than help.
"And now, that little mistake is going to cost you. Let's send a little message to SHIELD, shall we? About what happens when you try to meddle in places that were better left alone."
Against my better judgement, I turned back towards the classroom and quickly crossed to the doorway Grant had snuck me out of. I don't know if it was curiosity, stupidity, or something else, but I just had to go back. I peeked around the corner to find Sarah with her back to me, arms up, and a gun pointed at Grant. There was enough space between them that Grant had no shot at getting the gun from Sarah, and I could see in his face that he knew it.
"Any last words, Grant?" Sarah taunted. He took a deep, fortifying breath, and in that gap, I followed my gut instincts and threw caution to the wind. I sprinted into the room at full-speed and tackled Sarah from behind with all the force I could muster.
We hit the ground together, and she shrieked as we went down. It only took a few seconds for her to flip me off of her, and I saw my life flash before my eyes as she whirled on me. Then, at the last second, she collapsed unconscious to the ground instead.
I looked up to see Grant standing over her, a painter's palette that he'd used to knock her out in his hand.
"Are you okay?" he asked, quickly dropping to a crouch in front of me. I smiled at him and nodded, the terror turning into giddyness as the adrenaline dump hit.
"I'm great. Is that a painter's palette?"
"What? Yes, it is. Y/N, what were you thinking? That was incredibly dangerous-"
"Adaptable," I said, breaking in and giggling as I fixed him with what I hoped was a flirty look. "I like that."
He sighed and rolled his eyes, but I caught a faint smile on his face despite how hard he tried to hide it. He straightened and held out a hand to help me up, which I took.
"You should've gotten the hell out of here," he said. We stood almost chest to chest, and he hadn't dropped my hand.
"And where exactly would you be if I had?"
"I would've been fine." I just raised an eyebrow at Grant, and after determinedly holding my stare for a few moments, he sighed. "Alright. You might've saved my life."
I grinned, although I wasn't completely sure why. This was not the kind of situation that should've had me smiling.
"So..." said Grant, dropping my hand and taking a half-step back as he surveyed the scene around us. Police sirens sounded outside, and we could hear the nervous chatter from the evacuated crowd, too. "I need to clean this up. But... I'd love to buy you a cup of coffee afterwards, if you'd be interested. Since you saved my life and all."
I beamed back at him as I answered. "Honestly? You definitley owe me a coffee and a little more explanation after all of this."
Grant let out a small laugh as he stepped a little further away from me and grabbed some drop sheets from the far side of the room to start tying up Sarah.
"You're on. I'll call you when I'm done here," he said. "In the meantime, you should probably head out. I've got a badge to get us out of any questions the cops might have, but it'd probably be better if your name didn't come up at all."
I nodded and took a few steps towards the back door, grabbing my painting and bag as I went. I paused just on the threshold and stared at Grant as he continued to round up the apparent criminals and made sure their weapons were accounted for.
"Grant... do you... need my number? Or something?"
He paused his work to look up at me with an arrogant grin.
"I'm an agent of SHIELD. I'll find you." I raised an eyebrow, and after a second, he dropped the act. "Your number's on the class roster. I'll call that."
I laughed and nodded, giving Grant a small wave as I headed down the back hallway. I probalby wouldn't be coming back to this painting class, if I were being completely honest with myself, but I didn't mind. I could pick back up painting on my own just fine, from the safety of my own home.
Besides, the class wasn't going to be a total wash. I'd found Grant, after all, and every time I thought about him my heart leapt. And since everyone had come out of it okay, I felt perfectly comfortable saying a little chaos was worth the result.
Chaos was my favorite kind of art, after all.
Reunited At Last
Pairing: Father!Phil Coulson X Daughter!Reader
Imagine being reunited with your father, Phil Coulson, after believing he had died in the Battle for New York.
Warning: Angst/Fluff
Words: 649
You stood with Nick Fury in his office. You had wondered why he had called you in. There was something about this meeting that didn’t sit right with you. After everything that you had been through the last few years he could at least told you what this meeting was supposed to be about. You let out a huff crossing your arms as you turned your attention to the one eyed man. “Care to tell me what this about Fury?”
“I made a choice that effected you long ago and I am going to correct it now.” Fury said looking at her. He knew that this wasn’t going to be an easy thing for him to do and he wasn’t sure how you were going to react to the news that he had. But he needed to do it.
“And what choice would that have been?” You questioned your brows furrowing slightly in concern wondering what he could’ve even done that effected you.
“You have been without your father for the last ten years.”
You froze when you heard about your father. You felt like a young 18 year old again hearing about his death and how he had helped the Avengers. “W-what about my father.”
“I wanted to tell you that he is very much alive.”
You shook your head looking at him hearing the door open but not even looking back to see who was coming into the office. “No, you told me all those years ago that my father died… heroically.”
“Y/N.” Said a male voice that you knew as your father’s voice.
Tears came to your eyes as him calling your name was the one thing that would break you from your talk with Fury. You slowly turned and gasped as the tears began to slide down your cheeks. There stood your father alive and well. Looking better than ever. “D….Dad?” You said softly hoping that this wasn’t some sort of cruel trick that Fury was playing on you. It would be something that you would never be able to rebound from if it was.
Coulson moved towards you and wrapped his arms around you. “It’s really me sweetpea.”
You let out a broken sob as your father held you close to him rubbing your back softly.
“You were dead…”
“Only for a few moments.” He said softly against your hair knowing that this was a lot to take in. But he wanted to be there for you and he wasn’t about to miss any more of your life because of a stupid decision made all of those years ago.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?” You sniffled as you held onto your dad feeling the anger bubble up for Fury in keeping this hidden for so long.
“Fury wanted to make sure that I was able to pull through…”
“It’s been 10 years dad. Ten years.” You said pulling away from him your anger getting the best of you as you looked at Fury. “It took you ten years to tell me that my dad was alive…”
“You thought that he was dead and it was best that he remained that way until he was ready to come forward.” Fury said as he looked at you knowing that you were rather upset with the whole thing. He honestly didn’t blame you.
You looked at your father. “And you were alright with this whole thing?” You asked softly.
“I’m sorry… but then I realized how much I was missing in your life that I needed to come back…” He said pulling you into his arms again pressing a soft kiss against your forehead. “I’m not going anywhere for a long time.”
You gripped onto the suit that he wore hoping that his words of some comfort was true. That he wouldn’t leave you for sometime. You wouldn’t be able to handle another break down.
