i've found someone who will compliment and fawn over me. i now have the mindset to milk that for all it's worth. i've been sending pics in the discord server we share just so they can see them and compliment me. when they didn't (still haven't) respond to the latest pic it made me feel. generally negative. can't place a finger a specific emotion. and now i've been a bit. short? with them in my dms. it's not. entirely conscious and i'm really just now realizing it. i also don't share, nor completely understand their feelings towards me, but i'm happy those feelings exist nonetheless, since they're positive feelings about me. i mostly just see them as a friend, though i could become attracted one day. i'm just. sort of using them as a tool to make myself feel better? though i still do enjoy the friendly relationship i have with them outside of that. is this an npd thing? i'm still trying to gauge if i have it or not. am i being manipulative?
Hi, anon!
Now, keep in mind that I cannot diagnose you and this is just the opinion of one 18-year-old narcissist on the internet. However, based on the information you have provided me (and if it happens pretty regularly and enough to cause distress or dysfunction in your life), it seems like you meet at least a few of the criteria for NPD:
4) Requires excessive admiration
Your sending multiple pictures in order to be complimented and your standing with this person being determined by their view of you
6) Interpersonal exploitation
“Using them as a tool to make [you] feel better” (let me be clear: as long as you are not hurting anyone, this is NOT a bad thing!)
7) Lack of empathy
“[You] also don’t share, nor completely understand their feelings towards [you]” - this is a common experience among people who have lower empathy or lack empathy
This is just what I found and from what you sent me, and please keep in mind that my blog is not a valid substitute for professional evaluation (though I do know a lot, if I do say so myself).
I wish you luck in determining what is going on, and I hope I was helpful.

Friendly (or unfriendly if you're against this) reminder that this blog is supportive of ALL disorders. This blog does not think ANY disorder inherently makes someone a bad person, and is against any disorder being demonized. This blog wholeheartedly believes that a bad person having a disorder, yes, even if things that are also symptoms of their disorder are part of what caused harm, does not make the disorder a "bad" or "evil" disorder or excuse ableism and demonization directed towards the disorder.
Yes this includes personality disorders
Including npd and aspd
Yes this includes all psychotic disorders & disorders that cause psychotic symptoms
Yes this includes paraphilic disorders. All of them.
Yes this includes disorders that cause, or are even characterized by, attention seeking
Yes this includes disorders that directly have lying as a common symptom
Yes this includes dissociative disorders
Yes this includes any disorder with "gross" symptoms
Yes this includes physical disorders too
Yes this includes disorders that can cause loss of control of any kind- control of speech, control of body movement, etc.
Yes tis includes disorders that make someone "look scary"
This goes for literally any fucking disorder. There are not exceptions.

Unpopular opinion but I don’t think we should be demonizing people who do things for attention. You may find it “annoying” but a healthy person wouldn’t go to extreme lengths for attention. Attention seeking behaviors are really common in many mental illnesses, as well as it being a common trauma response. Attention seeking behaviors are a cry for help and people deserve to get that help instead of getting dismissed or laughed at for being dramatic.

list of symptoms for personality disorders (many disorders in general) are the absolute worst because, since PDs are so stigmatized, they're almost always like
signs you have x personality disorder😊 :
you are satan himself
you have killed 23 people
god doesn't love you

On Alters and Personality Disorders
Disclaimer that I am not a researcher and this is based on my understanding of different studies and of my own personal experience being a system with personality disorders and knowing systems with personality disorders
Often I see the question can on alter have a personality disorder that other alters do not. It seems to be hotly debated without a real answer, most people just extrapolate because studies on that specifically are hard to find and combine knowledge of systems and personality disorders but be used to make an inference. I am going to be doing the same thing here,
However one thing that I have not seen anyone mention that has greatly helped my understanding of this topic is the idea which has begun to exist relatively recently within psychology that personality disorders are really all the same thing at its core, a disorder which occurs in response to trauma, and the specific symptoms and disorder you will be diagnosed with is dependant on which survival methods worked best for the traumatizing situation that the person was in.
For example in situations where it was dangerous and likely to get the victim hurt by their abuser to care about the abusers feelings they will likely develop a PD with low empathy like NPD or ASPD. For situations where avoiding the abuser was possible and the best method something like AVPD may occur. And those who need to be highly attuned to their abusers emotional state and weather they get hurt or not depends on how the abuser is feeling may develop BPD. This is an over simplification but you get the picture.
Dissociative disorders are also caused by trauma. And abuse is complicated, so different survival strategies may work at different times, and using a method that works sometimes will actively get you abused more at other times. For singlets this can cause more than one personality disorder with symptoms that mix and overlap. For dissociative systems, this can mean different alters present different symptoms. Alters will often form because the system needs different survival strategies in different situations, and different alters will fill those roles. So it makes sense some alters will have symptoms of a personality disorder that another alter does not have. One alter may fit enough criteria for a diagnoses of a specific personality disorder while others may be missing key aspects of the disorder, so in tis way I do think it is possible. You can say they are just symptom holders and the whole system has it, or you can say just they have it, its really just arguing semantics at that point, since it is fairly clear within the community that many systems have alters who meet diagnostic criteria while other alters in the same system do not.
I do think it is possible for an alter to have a specific personality disorder that is not system wide, because specific personality disorders are not really separate from each other, but rather which symptoms do you present, and different alters present different symptoms. However, I also think that if any alter has a personality disorder, everyone in the system would most likely have a personality disorder of some kind (unless they have a highly specialized role or are a fragment that would prevent this, but the system as a whole would still be personality disordered). This is because the trauma changing the brain that created the personality disorders affects the whole system. It can affect different alters differently, and some specific symptom sets may be contained to only a few alters, but being personality disordered in general would affect everyone, or at least that is what I have come to believe based on my experience and research.
It also seems like just based on what I have seen that alters will frequently gravitate around a few presentations/specific disorders that show up in several alters, like a system of six may have 5 with BPD, and 3 of those also have NPD (meaning 2 with both), more likely than every alter having an extremely different disorder presentation from each other, and then varying symptoms between alters within those subsets of symptoms. This however is not based on any research and is just personal experience since this topic really hasn't been studied enough.
This is not meant to invalidate or dictact any one else's experience or beliefs around the topic but I haven't seen anyone discuss the theory that personality disorders are a single disorder with highly varied presentation and I wanted to add that idea to the conversation.

I've been following you for a bit and noticed how you said your system has NPD (at least I hope, our memories can get mixed up and such)
I want to know a little more about the disorder if that's okay. Mostly, how it appears for systems.
If that's okay, that would be nice. My system has recently been trying to find ourselves out a little more now that we are getting help, and we think we show signs of it. -Citrus
yes, we do have NPD ^_^ don't worry you didn't get it wrong
So for us our alters sort of display the different kinds of NPD, I guess. We're all affected by it at different levels, most of us are covert Narcissists but some of us are overt (mainly the symptom holders)
we have different levels of empathy and different ways of expressing the symptoms, so it was a little hard to figure out that we had NPD, but after looking at the criteria we found most of us do have them just presented differently ((I feel like I've said that tons of times now))
For example, our alter, Achilles, is a symptom holder. He's very overt with his NPD, isn't afraid to state he thinks he's the best, often gets extremely defensive if people criticise him, ect. But our host, zim, is very covert, rarely ever speaks up or says he's superior even when he sort of(?) thinks so, he reacts badly when criticised but instead of having an argument with them like Achilles would, he just withdraws himself.
I don't know if any of this is helpful, but I hope you at least found some answer to your question ^_^

System / plural NPD culture is having ‘NPD holders’ although the entire system has NPD, but these alters in specific are more of like “embodiments” of the disorder.
And then, said alters cause absolute chaos when they front.
(Please don’t fake claim us or any of the sort, we are already struggling to accept ourselves. /gen /srs. Thank you.)

Alastor Has NPD Because I Said So: A Shitty Analysis
Grandiose sense of self-importance. Overestimating their capabilities or holding themselves to unreasonably high standards. Bragging or exaggerating their achievements.
It's pretty clear he thinks highly of himself. I like to think that not only does he love radio, but, being The Radio Demon, he believes himself to be heavily associated with it as if it's part of him. So when he gloats about radio being a superior medium of self expression, he's speaking about himself as well.
Tumblr media
He was gone for seven years, and it's pretty blatant that he expects everyone else to care about that. Even if he would most certainly not give a true answer had he been acknowledged, he's desperate for that "where have you been" attention, and gets pissed when it's not received. He just naturally assumes he's important enough that other overlords would be concerned about his absence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Assuming his smile is something he chooses to do (ignoring the stitch mark theories), it's a very visible high standard he holds himself to, and according to Viv, it's something he judges others for as well. Even alone, he refuses to drop his smile.
Frequent fantasies about having or deserving success
The finale song showcases this well, as he outright states that he wants power/control, to be "holding all the strings"
Tumblr media
Belief in superiority. Thinking they’re special or unique. Believing they should associate only with those they see as worthy.
This goes pretty hand in hand with what I wrote in point one tbh. It seems evident that he's picky about who he's friends with as well, for example he only associates with Charlie for power.
Tumblr media
Need for admiration. Fragile self-esteem. Frequent self-doubt, self-criticism or emptiness. Preoccupation with knowing what others think of them. Fishing for compliments.
This is more of an internal thing, which can be hard to see in a character that hides his emotions so heavily. But you can see hints of it in his reaction when his commercial is criticized, he's proud and asks for feedback, and immediately reacts negatively and gets defensive upon criticism.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He had a breakdown over the thought of his image being tainted for saving his 'friends', he's less worried about his actual injury and rather the humiliation of being defeated over something so uncharacteristic of him.
Tumblr media
Entitlement. Inflated sense of self-worth. Expecting favorable treatment (to an unreasonable degree). Anger when people don’t cater to or appease them.
The first point is basically what I already spoke about, I don't think he really expects favorable treatment (perhaps internally, but he doesn't demand it)
That last point can be showcased with how he reacts to Lucifer, who didn't acknowledge him at all and criticized his work. He was obviously pretty openly pissed when Lucifer wasn't sucking up to him and his work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Willingness to exploit others. Consciously or unconsciously using others. Forming friendships or relationships with people who boost their self-esteem or status. Deliberately taking advantage of others for selfish reasons.
Do I need to say more than Charlie :/ and also like everyone ever that he interacts with 😭
Tumblr media
Lack of empathy. Saying things that might hurt others. Seeing the feelings, needs or desires of others as a sign of weakness. Not returning kindness or interest that others show.
Yeah I don't think the guy who hurts people for a living cares too much about hurting others-
And of course back to the smile thing, he sees anyone who doesn't mask as heavily he does as weak, he looks down on those who display their emotions so openly.
Frequent envy. Feeling envious of others, especially when others are successful. Expecting envy from others. Belittling or diminishing the achievements of others.
I don't actually see too much of this symptom in him, though I think it's more of an internal thing for the most part.
Arrogance. Patronizing behavior. Behaving in a way that’s snobby or disdainful. Talking down or acting condescendingly.
He seems to act most condescendingly around Vaggie, especially in the pilot, he's downright disrespectful. His interactions with Charlie upon trying to cheer her up comes off as very patronizing too.
