1. Can we get some basic info about you from… you?

A second year Scarabia student who’s a fox beastman. I guess I’m what you’d call a charmer, thief of the heart, man of your dreams… I’ve heard it all. But the real name’s Niko. Niko Cimarron. My surname means “Wild”, so you could call me Mr. Wild if you like that too. Heh, actually, it’s a business thing, so I guess you’d only call me that if you bought my products… Say, Carrots, you feeling like you need a snack? I have some lefties if you’d like.

2. Speaking of which, what are your “pawpsicles” made from? How do you make them?

Those little things? Why, I’ll let you know I put my blood, sweat, and tears in those treats. Makes me happy to see other people happy, like the faces on a thaumark. To make ‘em, it’s just some tasty berries from the school grounds that get mushed up to get juice, where they go into a mold and freeze up. It’s hard work! I’ve gotta walk so many steps around the school and all across campus… You’re lucky you never saw me in my first year. Took me a while to get used to the schedule… Though, I’m a well-organized man now, I’ll have you know. It’s good for the public image.

3. You’re from the Shaftlands, aren’t you? Do you have any connections to Vil, Cater, or Jack?

Connections? I have them with everyone, really… though I don’t think those three are really aware I came from the same place as them. To be fair, the Shaftlands is a pretty big area. People even go as far to call it a utopia.

If anything, I’ve talked to Diamond more at NRC than anywhere in the Shaftlands. Is that because I never even saw him once? Maybe. So I can’t say about back then, but I can enjoy a good conversation with him now. He’s a good customer and a good influencer. Back then, he got me a good chunk of costumers off of a Magicam post, so I’ve got to give it to him. Who knew people could just follow trendy things at the drop of a hat? Crazy, right?

Vil is a major celebrity, and Jack, I didn’t even know existed ‘till this year. I’ve got nothing to say about Mr. Hardhead, but I’ve had my fair share of talks with Vil. When we were kids, I got a wave from him once… It was great bragging rights. Heh, he kinda freaks me out now though. The reason why I don’t actually participate in club activities. He’s probably too high of a standard for a lowlife like me, so it’s not something that bothers me anyway.

4. You don’t seem to have a Unique Magic. Any reason why?

Ah. Magic? A little bit of a sour topic for me, Carrots, ow… I’m just a late bloomer, is all. I’ve got magic in me, but I never played around with it when I was younger, so I’m way more rusty than all of the other guys here. It doesn’t mean I don’t know the brain stuff, though. Just inexperienced.

If I’m being dead honest, it’s kind of a miracle how I got into NRC. I guess they wanted the fox vote, huh? Heh.

5. Not sure if I’ve seen you around a lot with one particular person. Is there a secret someone?

Secret someone? Getting jealous, are you? Haha, I would’ve never taken you to be the type!

It’s your fault for wording it like that. You’ve got to watch your words, Carrots. Well, the business life is a cold one, isn’t it? Being around a bunch of highschool guys isn’t really the “ideal” grounds for making business partners either, so it is what it is. At least this way, I get all the profits, so I don’t mind. If you want, I can save a spot for you by my side. ♡

6. Our last question. You say a lot of random stuff. People get annoyed with it pretty often. How do you feel about that?

…? Oh, you picked up on it, huh? Heh, I mean… I guess I could come clean. I think it’s interesting you haven’t walked away from me yet, y’know. Usually people aren’t into this stuff.

I appreciate you, Carrots. A little too much than I’d like.

Usually people don’t really like the stereotypical foxiness I bring to the table. They run away because I’m either something they don’t wanna get mixed up with, or just something they don’t like. I think you’re a weirdo who’s looking for entertainment when you come into my room and talk to me like this.

…But I guess that just means that you like the way I talk to you, right? You can’t get enough? Is that what’s happening here? ♡

Don’t pretend like your cheeks aren’t a little red. I like the reactions I get out of you. ♡

TRIVIA:

Niko is actually magicless. Not entirely, as he does have some running in his blood, so he didn’t lie, but it’s not enough where he can successfully conjure spells. Because of this, at NRC, he often has to get by with con-artist type excuses and acts. It works most of the time, as he has Crowley’s support. For now, he’s getting by with the excuse of being a late bloomer, but I’m sure suspicions are beginning to rise… Perhaps, if this were to be found out that he’s unable to conjure spells, he would be kicked out of NRC.

He made it to NRC after being dared to attempt to con his way in by his magicless best friend. His name is not noted, but he’s a very angry and violent French fennec fox. Niko is often bullied by him.

He can be considered a fan of Vil.

Niko enjoys the pop genre a lot, but is embarrassed to admit it.

Despite being a playboy, Niko is easily flustered at the thought of someone making moves on him.

Even though he doesn’t want to, he feels obligated to play into the deceitful foxiness of himself, because that’s what people naturally expect of him. It stops them from getting curious about him, as it seems like they’ve already got him figured out.

He says things that are considered shallow, like flirting or bargaining because he wants to get a reaction out of people. Niko does small things like this for small reactions — enough of these small reactions will fulfill the same satisfaction of seeing someone he loves flustered or happy, he thinks. In truth, he knows it won’t amount to much. Niko tries to satisfy himself enough so that he won’t need the real thing.

Niko feels very guilting for deceiving everyone at NRC, especially the prefect. Even still, he doesn’t have the heart to tell them that he truly doesn’t belong here, taking up a spot possibly for somebody who deserves it much more.

Niko’s way of thinking suggests that if he acts distasteful enough, it will cause people to stray far away from him. He believes that he really is just a lowlife fox, but the truth of his actions is something he think people would hate him for most; living in a lie. Because of this, he acts like a playboy and an annoyance in attempts to get people to stay away, preventing them from finding out the even uglier truth of him.

Additionally, he’s afraid to have the truth leak out because he doesn’t want to leave NRC. Though he doesn’t have much, he doesn’t want to lose the little bit he does have.

Even still, Niko craves for someone who will take time to understand him. Which is why he’s so attached to the prefect.

STORY SUMMARIES:

🌹 Heartslabyul: you wake up in the body of the protagonist from a novel. As ‘Alice Carrol’, you attempt to steer the story away from the tragedies of the novel’s plot, where Riddle Rosehearts, the crown prince, perishes as a tyrant.

🦁 Savanaclaw: in an unfamiliar world and body, you find yourself on the ship of the ‘King of Pirates’, Leona Kingscholar (also a second prince who has since gone independent.)

🌊 Octavinelle + Ignihyde: reincarnated as a human living at a seaside village, you get entangled in the world underneath the water’s surface. It seems that there's a curse of some sort on merpeople, which the Sea Witch Azul is trying to lift.

👑 Pomefiore + Scarabia: you're understandably confused when you're summoned as a ‘saint’ to the Pyroxene Kingdom. Between your role to assist in the crowning of the ‘fairest’ in the land, it's all you can do to stay out of trouble.

🐉 Diasomnia: isekaied into a story you were reading, you find yourself in a tough spot as the protagonist who infiltrates Briar Valley as an agent from the human kingdom. Is their POV of the story perhaps flawed in comparison to the friends you've found in the fae?

CONTENT WARNINGS:

MENTIONS of character death (doesn't actually happen in the fic), execution, kidnapping, light violence, drowning, attempted assassination, fictional political conflict, firearms - and other similar themes often featured in manhwa/royalty AU settings.

Why did the land of Pyroxene change to shaftlands and now to shift lands

Thank you MysteryShopTLs for their own insightful post on this topic; I referenced it while writing my own thoughts down.

Originally, the country is written as 輝石の国 or “kiseki no kuni”. The characters specifically used for “kiseki” more closely translate to “pyroxene”, which is a silicate mineral that is known for its familiar crystal formations:

Prior to the official English localization of TWST, many fan translations used “Pyroxene” as the name for the aforementioned location because of how its name is written in Japanese. And thinking about it, it seems to make sense. Vil, a sparkling celebrity, comes from Pyroxene, and he himself is twisted from a character from Snow White, a film which depicts a mining cavern with many jewels. I believe Cater, another Pyroxene resident, describes its people as generally glitzy, so this also fits the “jewel” or “crystal” image that the word pyroxene invokes. (Indeed, many characters from this land tend to be regal or “shiny” in some way, be it Vil, Cater, Vargas, Trein; Jack is the only one that isn’t immediately obvious). To be clear, “Pyroxene” was NEVER an official English name, even if it may have been somewhat true of the Japanese.

Both EN and JP (some things in JP, like the world map, are written entirely in English) games then revealed that “Pyroxene” would be localized as “Shaftlands”. (If I recall correctly, JP first showed the localization name in book 6 when Yuu and co. are consulting a world map.) This threw a lot of fans off because “Shaftlands” sounds notably less glamorous than “Pyroxene”.

The name still manages to maintain the mining reference though—mining shafts (rock shafts, ventilation shafts, and service shafts) are utilized to make mining more efficient and safe. “Shafting” may also refer to the strategy of excavating a vertical tunnel from the top-down, which is true of what the Seven Dwarves seem to do in the movie. Either way, the ties to mining are very clear and this may have been where the localized name placed its priorities rather than finding a name that befits the “glamour” of the people that come from it.

Now, Shift Lands… 😅 I’ll be completely honest, I have NO IDEA where this one came from since it seems like both servers already set “Shaftlands” to be the definitive name for that country as much as fans seem to dislike it jevajVahwbbwfwhD. I don’t see a connection between mining and “shifting” unless I guess if you want to count how mining can include “shifting” around/going deeper to find valuables. Even then, this is vague at best.

Many fan translators and Japanese speakers (in my own life) I consulted about this suggested it must be a typo on TWST JP’s part so that’s also what I’m choosing to believe 😂 A little odd that it hasn’t been corrected yet if it is actually a typo though… We’ve gotten the second update to Tapis Rouge by now and there’s been no attempt to “fix” Shift Lands so OTL maybe it is the intended spelling all along?? I feel so conflicted about this…

Hello hello!! Thank you for this question!

From what I can tell, it seems like Land of Pyroxene was changed in some places, but not in others!

"Shaftlands" is what is listed on the in-game world map on JP!

In fact, all of the country names are listed in English and nothing else, and a quick search results in many JP-server players back in 2021 trying to match up these English-language names to the Japanese-language names with which they were familiar (the map was not released on EN until 2023).

From what I can tell, the English-language names "Land of Pyroxene," "Isle of Lamentation," etc., came from fan translators working from official sources like the game guide and the in-game character profiles:

And those profiles are where things have been changed, with Vil's "Land of Pyroxene" hometown being updated to "Shaftlands."

(Upper left: "Island of Woe" in English seen above 嘆きの島 on JP-server, confirming that the 嘆きの島 from Idia's JP profile and the English "Island of Woe" from the in-game map are two different names for the same place)

It is very curious that the map is exclusively in English (a language that the majority of the players on JP-server probably do not speak--it is difficult to imagine the same thing happening in reverse, with an EN-server map being posted exclusively in Japanese), and I wonder if it might be for world-building purposes.

It is briefly touched upon in the first novel that the language being spoken in the world of Twst is not actually Japanese:

"While he is trying to speak his own language, his ears and mouth seem to be translating in and out of a language he does not know."

⚠️Disclaimer: the novel and the game are very different in some places and this might not actually be relevant to the game at all⚠️

We do not know if it is English or some other language entirely being spoken in Twst, but it is possible that the map was crafted in English to help recreate that feeling of foreign-ness and unfamiliarity that the prefect should naturally feel as a stranger in an unknown world, while still being recognizable enough for fans to be able to find out what things mean by googling (which they wouldn't be able to do if the developers had made up an entirely new language).

So maybe the first names we received in profiles and dialogue are what the names mean, but the map is possibly meant to be what a character within the world would see, when looking at it? A little like a map from Lord of the Rings being written in Elvish, except the Elvish is English :>

That may be why there are two names for all the countries: a version for the players (Land of Pyroxene) and a version for the characters (Shaftlands).

There is only one version of the names published on the EN server, with "Land of Pyroxene" changed in the profiles of characters like Jack and Vil, but "Shaftlands" as an alternative reading of the country's name existed on JP before the EN-server was launched. It is a curious situation!

(Bonus: I have begun to suspect that the best parallel for the JP server's use of English (using the English word "Chapter" in Book 7, on the map in Book 6, etc.) may be similar to how the English language uses French:

While the JP server ends scenes with the English word "END," the EN server ends scenes with the French word, "Fin." So a better parallel might be English is to JP as French is to EN?)

— or, the noble gentlemen series, in which the genre of the world is historical fantasy, and you and the twst boys are citizens of a distant magical land !

note: apologies for the wait !! had a few pressing assignments so i put those first, but i'm glad to say that i can be back to a more regular schedule now ^^

[ part three out of seven in the noble gentlemen series ]

It wasn't common to meet knights randomly in your kingdom. Often times knights were found either patrolling or training within the palace walls, so it was quite a rarity to see knights in a more relaxed setting. Now that there was a visit from another royal from a distant land, it seemed that the streets were teeming with knights to make sure that no distractions occur.

However, you weren't expecting to meet a knight in the woods of all places. It was a nice day for a picnic, which is why you decided to go into the woods in the first place. So when you walked into a clearing only to be met by a training sword to the throat, you froze.

You made eye contact with the man and his eyes, which were brimming with concentration suddenly shifted, "Oh. Sorry about that, I didn't mean to attack you. I heard footsteps and…assumed the worst." From the way he was dressed to the quality of the training sword, you knew instantly that you had met a knight.

You asked for his name and the other awkwardly sheathed his sword, "Name's Jack." Huh, so maybe this guy wasn't so talkative... You offered to share your picnic spread with him and he reluctantly agreed. This was the first time that you met Jack from Afterglow Savanna's Royal Guard.

Sir Jack was...new to the knight thing. Even though he was very much fit for it, it turned out that Jack had only been a knight for a couple of months. You voiced your surprise. His form had been so steady and natural that it seemed to you he had been a knight for a long time.

"Le— I mean, his Highness picked me up from the lands of Pyroxene when he was visiting," Jack said, repeating his sword drills in front of you. "I'm grateful for it, but also, he really works me and Ruggie to the bone…" You smiled at his words. He seemed to get along well with his superiors. You said as much, and he flushed deeply, his ears flattening on his head. He turned around quickly after that and continued practicing, although you could still see his tail wagging lightly.

When you invited Sir Jack to your house, you were surprised to see him interested in your humble greenhouse. He crowded around your cacti, marveling at the tiny blossoms and giving you advice on how to cultivate them. Your gardener was most pleased with this, taking notes as the burly man continued talking about cacti care.

"Why I like cacti?" Jack tilted his head. "I guess it's because they're the one plant that doesn't die out in the cold of Pyroxene. I have lots of them back home but I've never seen this type before." He then coughed, seemingly realizing that he was...being more talkative than usual. But if all it took was cacti-talk for Jack to open up, then you really didn't mind. (Besides, it was kind of charming to think about the big and burly Sir Jack and his collection of cacti.)

Although it was fun to have those rendezvous and picnics with Sir Jack, you always knew that there would come a day when he would have to leave. You stare at the packed streets wistfully as the parade is led down the middle. It had been a hectic few days and you haven't had the chance to say goodbye to Jack, so you thought that you could at least do it from the parade. You didn't even get to join the crowd when a gentle hand tugged at your wrist. You whipped around to see Jack in plain clothes, leading you into an alley.

"Hey," Jack said awkwardly, and you echoed the greeting back. The two of you stood in silence for a bit before Jack's hand was shoving something into your arms. It was...a wool hat, intricately knitted and beautifully colored.

You tilted your head and Jack coughed, "Pyroxene is cold even in the summer. You should come and visit. If you have the time, that is." You smile and you can see his tail start to wag the slightest bit. You told him to make sure he has some good food when you visit, and his tail started wagging harder. Now you didn't have to think too hard if an opportunity for vacation came. You knew exactly where to go to meet your favorite knight once more.

With the second prince visiting, people were abuzz about the people accompanying him. Of course, you heard about the sandy-haired retainer that was always at the prince's beck and call. You also heard about his skillfulness and talent in a wide array of different things.

It's just...you didn't expect to run into him in a situation like that. With a big party being held for the second prince came the hustle and bustle of crowds. You were stuck in the fray of the dance floor when you suddenly felt it. Someone's hand was lightly tugging at your wallet. You immediately grab at the culprit's hand, holding on as the crowd jostled you together.

"Oho, so you felt that. Not bad for city folk, shishishi~" The culprit refused to let you turn around, and instead you felt yourself being led away.

When you were finally able to turn around, you saw sand-colored hair and blue-grey eyes, complete with a big grin, "Sorry ‘bout tryna steal your wallet. But I'd appreciate it if you didn't report me, my boss told me not to get into any trouble."

You...were speechless. But you told him that you could only do that if he promised not to pickpocket at the festival anymore. He pouted, "...You drive a hard bargain. I made sure to only go after the wealt– I mean...alright."

You sighed in relief and he grinned, "You're amusing. The name's Ruggie, and you are?" The thief-apparent wouldn't leave you alone for the whole festival. And it wasn't until later on that you realized he was the visiting Prince's retainer.

It wasn't like you meant to figure out that Ruggie was a skilled cook. No, really. You hadn’t even planned on meeting him again. It was more like…you walked into your dining room and saw him talking animatedly with your chef one afternoon.

"Woah, don't look so mad! There weren't many people with your name, y'know," He chuckled before pointing at the apron. "Besides, I'm the one that cooked your lunch for today. 'S a favor for letting me pester you for the remainder of the festival." He winked as the dishes rolled out. And you had to begrudgingly admit that...the food was good. Ruggie was indeed a talented chef. You could see him preening over your reaction in the corner. (If you asked him about what recipes to use, he would have the smuggest expression on his face.)

Another thing you learned about Ruggie was the way he loved playing with kids. This time around you had a few errands to run, but it was unexpected to see Ruggie leading a group of kids toward you. All the kids were smiling and giggling in delight as Ruggie said something.

"Y'know, I used to take care of all the kids in my neighborhood," Ruggie grinned, watching the kids run around. "I was kinda like their big brother~ 'S why I like kids so much." You watched with a smile as he joined in their playing, feigning getting caught by the children as they played. And you let yourself be lead into the crowd, spending your afternoon playing instead of finishing your errands.

You knew the day would come that Ruggie had to leave. It was inevitable; the visit was never meant to last forever. But you were quite sad to be losing such a great companion. So when Ruggie visited the day before he had to leave, you told him your thoughts.

Ruggie looked mildly surprised at your words, "You're...sad? Aww, don't be sad." You frowned at his teasing tone before he cleared his throat, "How about this: I'll write to you. And if I pester Leo— I mean, get a vacation, then I'll come and visit you. Or vice versa." It...wasn't a bad proposal. It would be nice to be penpals with Ruggie, and you could feel your mood lifting as he advertised many of Afterglow Savanna's natural wonders.

"That's why this isn't a goodbye," Ruggie said brightly before grabbing your hands. "Now c'mon~ Laugh with me, shishishi~" If there was one thing that you'd miss about Ruggie it was his ability to make you smile. Well, since this isn't a goodbye, then you'd just have to make sure to see him again one day.

Leona Kingscholar. Hailing from the distant Kingdom of Afterglow Savanna, he was the talk of the town. You were content just watching the festivities happen, listening to people talking about the prince that had the presence and power to be a king yet stayed forever second place. It was a bit sad to think about. Although you were a bit curious about this prince, you really didn't want to try your luck and run into him for fear of accidentally pissing him off.

So when you entered a seemingly-empty private room and were met with a low growl, you immediately froze. "Oi, who told you that you could come in here?" You turned slowly, seeing the prince sprawled on the couch. Shit.

The frown etched itself deeper onto his face, "Well? Are you going to answer?" The nerves buzzed under your skin as you apologized, watching as the prince raised himself up, sauntering over to where you were.

"Hmm...herbivores shouldn't poke their noses where they don't belong," The prince reached behind you, and you braced yourself for the worst. However, all you could hear was the click of the door opening. You turned your eyes back to the prince, finding him walking back to the couch. "Well? Run along," He yawned and you could see the slight glint of his teeth. "Or would you like me to change my mind?" You scurried off after that, heart still pounding in your chest from your encounter with Leona Kingscholar.

Funnily enough, the second time you met Prince Leona was at a restaurant. You didn't know what he was doing at the restaurant near your abode but what you did know was that he had seen you.

It was evident in the way his ears twitched before he was calling out to you, "Oi, nap-disturbing herbivore. Come over here." You could see the prince's attendant looking at you with pleading eyes and you relented. Turned out that they had gotten separated from their carriage, and Leona had gotten hungry enough that his nose led him to this restaurant.

"Order me the best, and get whatever's good for these two," Leona said, leaning his cheek into his palm. "And get something for yourself. I'll cover it." Huh. So maybe this guy wasn't so bad after all. The Prince ended up devouring close to five plates of the finest meat at that restaurant. The owner definitely appreciated your hand in this development.

The next coincidental meeting was strangely at your house. Or you shouldn't say it was coincidental, because his Highness had looked a little too smug while sitting in your drawing room. The outside world clamored as the "Prince of Afterglow Savanna went missing!", and guards started lining every corner.

"What? You weren't hard to find," Leona watched with very thinly veiled interest as you paced around. "Your house seems to be a good place to sleep. Lend it to me for a few hours, before those prissy knights find me again." You half-wondered if you should go up to the nearest guard station and report that, yes, the missing prince was not missing, he actually was at your house and he simply ran away. Yet you didn't do that. Instead, you let him find a spot of sunshine in your backyard and watched as he catnapped till his attendant finally found him.

Leona was never meant to stay for long. His visit to the kingdom was a political one, and once the negotiations were over, he was to go home. Much to your disappointment, Leona had not been visiting for the past few days till his leaving parade, and you half-heartedly thought that maybe Leona had forgotten all about you. But it turned out that you were wrong as soon as you opened the door to your drawing room.

"What? Thought I'd leave without saying anything?" Leona's lazy smile brought you a sense of normality that broke you out of your stupor. You sat across from him and asked him what he's doing here instead of at his parade. "Can't leave without this," Leona tossed something and you caught it. It was one of the beaded bracelets that often adorned the Prince's forearms.

"To clarify, that is still mine. I must've forgotten it here on one of my visits. So you're gonna have to give it back to me when you come visit Afterglow Savanna, alright?" And it took you a second to realize that he was asking you to promise that you'd meet again one day. You did an exaggerated bow, playing along with Leona's whims and promising to deliver the bracelet back safely. After all, who was going to turn down an invitation from a prince himself?

[ bonus : how do these gentlemen know each other ? ]

— Leona was actually visiting the kingdom for a negotiations! He works as a diplomat for Afterglow Savanna. It might sound out of character, but with Leona's sharp tongue and keen intellect, he makes an excellent negotiator and gets even more benefits than expected for his kingdom.

— Although he was bitter when he was younger, that sense of bitterness has been watered down and pushed aside by a determination to support his kingdom. People call him a "Shadow Ruler" because of the way he can greatly influence Afterglow Savanna's allies, but he has no ambitions to forcefully inherit the throne.

— Leona and Ruggie met during one of Leona's many visits to areas of poverty in Afterglow Savanna. Ruggie tried to steal something off him and Leona caught him immediately. But instead of turning him in, Leona just told Ruggie to get better at it, so that next time he could take his wallet without him noticing. Ruggie developed a begrudging respect for Leona ever since then.

— The only reason that Ruggie ended up becoming Leona's retainer was because Leona was sick and tired of all the prissy retainers that Falena would assign him. He remembered Ruggie and basically asked him to become his retainer on the spot.

— It went something like:

Leona: You.

Ruggie: Me?

Leona, rolling his eyes: Yes, you. I know you remember me. Can you clean? Can you cook? Are you able to keep secrets?

Ruggie: ....For a good price I could.

Leona: Great. *throws a bag of thaumarks at Ruggie* You start tomorrow.

[ And now Ruggie runs circles around him tryna keep him on track. What a happy ending. ]

— Jack, on the other hand, wasn't as easily convinced. In the first place, it wasn't like they had known each other for a long time when Leona had offered him a job as a knight. So he was very hesitant to accept the offer, even more so after seeing how ragged and rundown Ruggie was.

— Leona ended up challenging Jack to a duel of swords. The terms were if Jack could beat him, he'll leave him alone. But if Jack couldn't beat him, he would join Leona's retinue as a knight for two years. (If it wasn't clear already, Jack lost the duel. And this ignited his determination to one day best Leona in a fight, which is why he trains so hard.)

— Even Ruggie didn't understand why Leona was trying so hard to grab Jack. But well, maybe Leona saw a bit of his younger self in Jack? Who knows, all Ruggie was supposed to be doing was figuring out ways to further drain Leona's wallet.

— Jack and Ruggie got along pretty well. At first there was some wariness, but Ruggie kinda took Jack under his wing after a bit. That wasn't to say the troublesome hyena didn't play pranks on the trusting wolf, but well...they got a long. (Especially when it was time to complain about Leona—)

*sigh* I have the silliest theory of all time, which is saying a lot considering what I theorize, but I’m trying so hard to figure out Jack’s birthday card

It’s been controversial, to say the least. Because RAFIKI?!? Not to clown on my boy Jack, but even though he’s very smart, he never had this special type of wisdom like Rafiki. He’s very serious, a lone wolf. I thought we would be getting a picture from the Beauty and the Beast wolves, especially considering he’s from the land of Pyroxene, even being childhood acquaintances with Vil

But since I’m getting desperate, I look at the two frames closer

We have Rafiki with the light shining behind him, and Scar shrouded in darkness. Jack is conveniently in between the two, separating the light and darkness

Then Mufasa teaches Simba about how “everything the light touches” belongs to the king. OKAY.

And there’s “that shadowy place” where the Hyenas and Scar gather. OKAY

So…is TWST trying to imply that Jack is the “in between,” or the representation of “everything the light touches?” Like the dawn or twilight (stop don’t think about the vampire movies)?? Jack IS a first year, has white hair, and the first years definitely have a lot of symbolism regarding new beginnings and personal change, and they seem to be setting up their importance in the end game.

I’ve talked more about this anthology cover before, but the first years symbolism change and growth. A lot of them are discovering who they are, what their Unique Magics are…and Jack notably stood against Leona in Book 2 despite idolizing him before. And if there’s still hope for Beauty and the Beast reference, the beast quite literally goes under a transformation, just like Jack’s unique magic that turns him into a wolf. So does Jack being the “twilight” a representation of this transformation?

Still, this seems like a REALLY abstract and roundabout way to reveal Jack’s origins? Which is saying a lot considering Sebek’s and Lilia’s origins being pretty abstract.

The weird thing about this is, even though Jack has white/pale hair like Silver and Kalim, he is NOT a part of the “light trio” which is made up of Silver, Kalim, and Rook (who is blonde), supposedly because they are based of heroes instead of villains. Ironically enough, Jack has a much stronger moral compass and behaviors compared to Rook. And visually, with his white hair, he would fit into the light trio a lot better. But what makes the light trio the Light Trio is how their magic is represented with white glows instead of the standard dark magic that everyone else has- including Jack.

I tried seeing if there were any “sayings” about wolves that Jack may be based on, but the closest thing I could find was one of the Pinterest-esque quotes about two wolves, one being the light and the other darkness 😭 I mean…I suppose if you REALLY stretch it, the “grandfather” explaining the story of the two wolves in this fakelore could be Rafiki, which is why Rafiki shows up in Jack’s artwork.

Rafiki does something similar with grown up Simba, asking Simba who he was, and showing him a reflection of his father. But like the wiki page says, it’s origin is very dubious and is considered fakelore.

But this is driving me crazy because it almost made sense until I realized Jack is basically the embodiment of this meme 😭😭😭

So unless Jack is secretly Rafiki’s wolfsona
