I know it doesn’t make much sense to add Vil to the actual event story since they’d have to change a lot of things, but I wish they did so Cater and Vil could’ve had more interactions and I could add them to my Cater-Vil interactions post.

Filipino AU HC
A/N: Fun fact: I’m a Filipino yayy :DDD
So I decided to this headcanon with let’s say, “my” (it depends if you ship them too OwO) ships wearing my country’s national outfit/costume which is a “Filipiniana and Barong Tagalog”  😂😂😂
This is actually what I think they'd react/do when trying them out.
Also pics came from google. (I might get sued LMFAOO—)
Also this is couples sooo wearing something quite modernized versions—
These are also customized ones and the boys are simply wearing black pants 😂😂😂
~~~
So Hanji, someone who loves exploring things, decided it's nice to try something out and explore culture.
~~~
Eremika
Ok, THEY WOULD LOOK SO FINE—
While trying it out, Mikasa was feeling weird and felt like she's carrying something at her bottom part 😂😂😂
Eren would be like, "Are you alright?" or like, "Can you even walk with that?"
Mikasa replies with a nod of reassurance.
Her hair is also like decorated with pearl pins (also something we do in Philippines while wearing the Filipiniana OwO)
Eren was just staring at her (especially that her cleavage is showing-) as he put his hair in his iconic manbun (y e s-) and puts the barong on.
So Mikasa got the hang of it and tried walking
She was so slow—probably because it was her first time and the dress was so huge and she was also wearing heels trying not to trip 😂😂😂
Eren was trying not to laugh at her but she looked so funny trying to walk—
He fails and he ends up laughing so hard Mikasa just straight up glared at him making him stop.
So Eren walked towards her and due to the dress being like big, he had to kinda adjust the dress' folds so he can get nearer to her and get her hand so they could walk together.
While walking to their meeting place, Eren was stealing glances at Mikasa's "thing" (this dude is h0rny and thirsty™)
Mikasa then noticed and raised a brow at him—Eren looking at her and smiling sheepishly (got caught redhanded)
She smirks and tightens her grip on his arm making Eren curse softly because of how strong her grip was and it's definitely painful.
"You can stare at it all you want later." She whispered to him grinning—Eren shrugging it off.

AruAni
Another fine couple— (who am I kidding they are all fine—)
Annie is wearing the dress and OH MY FUCKING GOD.
SHE LOOKS SO GREAT.
Her hair is down and she has pearl pins at the left side of her hair (like those korean ways of putting hairpins—)
She's just staring at Armin who seems to be quite focused in fixing himself.
Armin then looked at Annie and he was just in awe.
She looked at him—kinda forgetting her uncomfortable situation at the moment.
He walked towards her to give her a hand since she does look like she's carrying the bottom half of her body due to the size of her dress (same experiences with Mikasa 😂😂😂)
Armin was smiling at her while Annie is just blushing madly (let us insert her simping and screaming internally)
"Uncomfortable?" He asked—Annie shaking her head no (even if she is)
He laughed lightly and Annie's grip tightened a bit—Armin definitely knowing she is uncomfortable.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
JeanPiku
Ok so far... when I try to think of them—my stupid nonexistent ass (yes I'm assless like Eren 😂😂😂) would be like, "first thought, height—"
Pieck prefers dresses that won't reach the floor (because they're hard to drag around)
Jean is quite confused why Hange would decided to make them wear this (Jean I'm offended— jkjk 😂😂😂) for some kind of dinner party she put up.
He'd keep questioning why she decided this was some kind of idea—Pieck always answering them.
Pieck would have her hair down (they're quite wavy) and she'd wear a simple pearl headband (but she so pretty 🥺👉👈)
Luckily, Jean won't have to find himself having to adjust her dress to make room for him to be near (oof for Eren and Armin 😂😂😂)
But their height differences makes Pieck look like she's clinging to a tree when walking 😂😂😂
Outfit pics:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
NicoSasha (Yes, I also ship these two)
The usual Sasha, eating beforehand
Her hair would be in her usual ponytail and she's wearing a pearl hair tie
Both of them are just enjoying themselves with this, Niccolo also taking some (Sasha shares her food with him sometimes)
They also did not mind at all
Like Jean, he doesn't have to find himself adjusting dresses to make room for him to be near
Outfit pics:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
LeviHan
Ah yes, Hange being the mastermind of this—
Talking about it, Levi was really against this idea—but knowing Hange, he just 'tched' at it since even if he told her not to, she'd still do it
Hange's definitely enjoying it since she kept humming melodic tunes
He wasn't even sure where her idea of wearing "these" came from
Hange's hair was also put up in a simple cinammon bun secured with pearl pins
Levi did find her beautiful in it but he still won't buy it since SHE was the one who thought all of this
And yes, her dress is short (you know already, I said it twice—)
When she'd look at him, a grin forms on her face and was like, "You look great in it!" Levi rolling his eyes and the iconic "tch"
Outfit pics:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
~~~
A/N: YES FINALLY!!!
Ok ik I kept mentioning pearl clips, headbands, etc.
It's because pearls are the common stuff here and we'd wear them on special occasions that requires us to wear the national costume/outfit (yes in school we used to do that)
Also didn’t know how long this was in my drafts and editing it until now 😂😂😂
Anyways, I hope you enjoyed!
(Remind me to stop making HCs cuz they're literally failing lol)
(Maka-recognize kung kanino yung 4 na yan may sampung piso 😂😂😂)
opinions on riordanverse ; my edition
a lot of people have been doing this so i decided why not right. probably gna lose some followers or smth but anyways. pls respect my opinions! if u disagree, thats fine, but please be polite. unless any of my opinions strikes u as morally wrong then pls point it out to me respectfully. thanks!
- i actually liked drew. im so sorry to everyone who hates her but full offence, why. think about it this way ok, first of all drew became hc because silena died. silena was the traitor, the one who betrayed chb, yet after she died campers celebrated her as a hero? and then drew suddenly has to replace her and live up to idk that legacy she left behind,, when all of a sudden this girl named piper swoops in and takes her place. idk abt u but i wld be salty abt that too. not only that, but as an asian, the chances of drew having faced racism/bullying as a child is pretty high (she studies at brooklyn academy). which means that when she finds out shes a demigod, and arrives at chb where most of the campers are white (this is an assumption btw), she’d obviously be scared of being bullied for her skin color right?? so the first thing she wld do before the campers get to bully her is to bully them before they can do so. (sentence structure here is wack i apologize) ofc this might not even have happened, drew could have had a perfect childhood && was a b1tch for no reason, BUT EVEN THEN HER ROLE AS A BULLY WAS PRETTY VITAL BECAUSE THAT FURTHER SHOWED THE CONTRAST BETWEEN HER AND PIPER,, HIGHLIGHTING PIPER AS A HERO//GOOD CHARACTER,, AND THEREFORE MAKING READERS LIKE PIPER MORE. anyway stop hating on drew please. ALSO WHY IS THIS SO LONGA SDFJHG
- jason isnt bland, the fandom just kinda erased his backstory (thanks to @pjohoo-memes for the phrasing lol)
- reynabeth wouldnt have lasted/would have broken up several times. idk i just see them as two extremely powerful characters who have firm opinions and will definitely clash at some point. in a platonic relationship,, i can see them as really good friends but as lovers? idk i just think theyll break up
- PIPABETH
- i dont really like jercy,, i see them as better friends than lovers. also idt jason and percy were that close..?
- the dam and not my type jokes are srsly cringey and were never funny. ik that seems hypocritical since my username literally makes use of the dam joke but honestly i dont actually like the joke. its not funny to me and has never been funny
- the seven were not best friends. they definitely argued,, and honestly probably werent as close as the fandom makes them seem. like ure dumped with 6 other people, out of which u only know a few. my introverted ass would have jumped off the argo 2 quicker than leo valdez could bomb camp jupiter up. also leo was a dick to frank. so what if frank is bigger sized?? thats not a valid reason to tease him
- the fandom needs to stop hating on octavian while worshipping luke. if u hate luke and u say u hate octavian too, then okay. but if u tell me ure a luke stan but u despise octavian?? imma disagree w u. luke was worse than octavian im sorry. first of all, octavian being a dick was kinda justified. hes been after the praetor position for so long, and everyone keeps saying to “wait for jason” when suddenly this dude, whos a son of NEPTUNE (neptune wasnt liked much by romans), and the camp decides to make him praetor?? dude i would be pissed off big time. and then afterwards, he finds out that greek demigods are real and the dude they made praetor is greek. AND THEN GREEK DEMIGODS COME TO CJ AND ONE OF THEM BOMB IT UP?? octavian has been told all his life that greeks are scum and this dude called leo valdez attacks cj. sure it was an accident, but did octavian know that? no. so it was honestly justified that he was such a salty prick im just saying. also some of yall be hating on octavian for cutting a teddy bear open and thats the funniest shit ive ever heard i swear
- luke didnt go to elysium
- travis and connor stoll r way too underrated. the two have been head counselors of the hermes cabin since luke was revealed as a traitor, can u imagine the stress? luke, the person they probably looked up to as a brother, betrayed them. and they didnt even have time to process this when they were  thrown the roles of being hcs. that would have been so stressful and i would probably have broken down if i were them. the stoll brothers taking turns to wake up at ungodly hours because a new camper is crying and homesick and terrified, the stoll brothers having to comfort and take care of new campers, having to deal with the amount of people in that cramped space because not enough campers are being claimed fast enough. having to resolve issues between campers in the hermes cabin all the time. the stolls arent just comedic relief, and we need to stop treating them as such
- tratie shldve been canon idc idc
- demigods of the demeter cabin arent talked about enough and i love the fact that meg was demeters kid. like she isnt the child of one of the big three yet shes so powerful.
- we need to hype clarisse up more her character arc was phucking amazing
- rachel is overhated. sis found out greek gods exist and regularly come down to earth to fuck around and went “ok cool”. queen shit behavior methinks
- the floor 19 crew of mcga is srsly underrated. like do u even remember halfborn gunderson, mallory keen, tj, etc??? bc i feel like we only remember samirah, magnus, alex, and sometimes blitz and hearthstone
- sadie (tkc) was kinda annoying at first. i like her more now tho but i rmb not liking her for a phat while
- tkc and mcga need more love
- carter kane and jason grace arent boring. theyre just really sweet boys who are too good for this world and yes yes yes
- hazel and frank (especially frank) need to be hyped up more. i hardly ever see anything about them. also yall seem to forget that frank was literally made praetor and that even hecate admired hazel and was willing to fight beside her because of how powerful she was
- frazels age gap is kinda sketch but i still think theyre really cute
- nico definitely had trauma from going to tartarus on his own
- GROVER IS PERCYS BEST FRIEND
- annabeth isnt smarter than leo but neither is leo smarter than annabeth. ive seen a lot of discussions about who is smarter and heres my hot take on it: neither. theyre equally smart, just in different ways. leos a genius mathematically speaking. he has no issues solving math problems meant for people much, much older than him. annabeth on the otherhand, is great at strategies etc. she can make an army of 1000 more powerful than the enemy, even if theyre outnumbered. so in my opinion, both are equally as smart//u cant compare their intelligence, because their talents lie in two different areas.
- while i do agree rick riordan isnt a god and that hes bound to make mistakes,, AND that hes given us a lot of representation,, if the representation offends the people its sposed to represent, then theres a problem. im talking about piper as a poc and wearing feathers in her hair. im not a poc, so i cant speak for them on whether or not its wrong, because i dont know either. HOWEVER, i have seen multiple posts BY pocs talking about how they didnt really like rick’s representation of piper, and thats an issue. pocs have been and are still oppressed and discriminated against by many. as a white cis man, we cant really blame him for not knowing (tho he could have done a research,, asked some pocs,, idk), but by representing pocs in that manner, hes influencing impressionable kids/teens into thinking “oh pocs wear feathers in their hair all the time” etc, which isnt true. the pjo/hoo series is extremely successful, and kids who read the books will probably start forming inaccurate opinions on pocs. the amount of fan art that depicts piper with feathers in her hair dont help either. “but rick said so in the books, so its canon” yeah well rick isnt a god and he can get some things wrong at times. im not saying we should cancel him, im saying we should start educating ourselves and not spread false info like pocs wearing feathers in their hair all the time. also that snake song shit where she sang Summertime was just- yeah. bc heres the thing you can be racist, and still include minorities, but portray them in a racist way. And even then, ignorance isn't a thing to admire. Getting those facts wrong still has a major impact. It continues to perpetuate racist stereotypes.
“ With the feather thing, I looked it up myself; it takes less than five minutes to figure out that Cherokees don't braid feathers into their hair. I didn't grow up in the country where my parents are from. I have many other first/second generation American friends who have also been through that, with a bit of a disconnect from their culture. But something that most of us have in common is that when we didn't know something, and when our parents weren't that big of a help, we looked it up. We sought out resources online and through other people from our culture to be able to connect more with where we came from. Some of that took a Google search. So I find it hard to believe that Piper, a girl who Rick's trying to portray as someone who is attempting to connect with her culture and is totally against racist stereotypes, wouldn't know that eagle feathers aren't supposed to be braided into your hair casually. She may be disconnected from her culture, but she's also shown to want to connect back to it. Piper wouldn't be casually braiding feathers into her hair while also telling off people for being racist. It makes no sense.” - reddit thread (down below)
for those of yall who wanna know more please please read this, it has a lot of things i wanna add in here : https://www.reddit.com/r/camphalfblood/comments/gy3gl2/piper_mcleans_portrayal_is_innacurate/
as well as https://finding-my-culture.tumblr.com/post/189422373260/maxie-ratties-and-cattie-finding-my-culture
i will be posting screenshots of these in future posts so if ure viewing this on ig and u dont have tumblr,, dont worry
- the fact that most of the strong female characters in the series refuse to be “girly”, and ngl i dont really like that. just because ure girly doesnt mean u cant be strong.
- piper would have been a great way for him to start making the strong characters act girlier, but instead he went with the “I’m not like other girls” trope which is quite obnoxious to hear constantly, and I don’t think it’s necessarily great for younger girls to read that idea growing up.  the closest we've ever had to a strong female character who was also into "girly" things was Silena. when I was younger I admired Piper's "I'm not like other girls" thing, but then I got older and realized that the whole mentality of "not like other girls" is super obnoxious, and a little bit toxic
i have a heck load more that i cant rmb rn but yeah feel free to add more
The remakes w the most diverse casts seem to have the least international support: NL, AUS and Druck. Ik druck might seem like a strange inclusion, but it actually lags quite far behind wtfock and skam it (not including skam fr bc it easily has the largest pool of int'l fans and no skam IT bc there were calls to boycott it) by way of fan engagement. Even when wtfock and skam fr are at the their lowest, their int'l support is bigger. Is diversity not wanted? or do u think there's another reason?
This is a long rant.... just an fyi.
Ok so lets talk about the economy mill that is the SKAMverse and why some SKAMS do better and others do not. I don't know if you have ever read @dagcutie post about skamfr and how it sorta of ushered in youth targeted web series into french culture but yea it had some pretty interesting impact within french culture. Also before the Netflix purchase of Italia which now makes it the biggest money maker remake SkamFR was the first to have an original season so I think skamfr just ushered in a lot of change into the skamverse and sorta of blew up. Skam Italia probably has the best underdog story. Not only was it the first remake and houses the best Jonas remake in Gio they really fought intensely hard to get the Netflix deal through and for that they gained a ton of support from the skamverse. I don’t know if you know this but their cast was willing to work on s4 for free just to get it out. Ludo went on full rants defending his cast and crew from Timvision. Also I know this is personal taste but they are Skams that just have insane direction and Italia’s shots are mind-blowing my god I still gasp at the hot bath scene in s4 it was stunning. SkamNL was up there as well. Wtfock has pretty scenes but SkamIT is a whole other level concerning cinematography. So diversity is weird because every country is different culturally. First lets discuss Skam Austin since am American. So this is a tricky one because facebook watch buying it was probably one of the worst thing that could have happened to Skam Austin as it became tied to the release of a new web product for Facebook. So even if Skam Austin did well if the product didn't do well it would get cut.
Concerning viewership I have spoke about this before I think sometimes the international viewership says they want raw Americana but then they get surprised by how mundane non-metro city life can be for an American teen. Austin is a pretty small city, its liberal but still culturally Texan. Also generally speaking its really hard to get American viewers to connect to shows not set in one of the big US cities and lastly I dont think Austin got cancelled because of diversity because another fun fact that most non-American Skam fans dont know is that we sorta of already made a skamesque teen show based in Texas and its called Friday Night Lights and its basically considered a masterpiece and any teen show out of Texas will always be measured by that show. Its not a web series format but it was shot in a very raw gritty realistic way too. It touches on some of the same issues as Skam too and race is a huge part of the story too. Also I said this before the USA will remake Skam again so don’t worry about it. We love remaking remakes of a remake. Its like our thing but I think the biggest issue wasn't the cast for Austin but the location and also that it was tied to a web product release. SkamNL is simple they cancelled it because the network wanted to use the money for Eurovision. Druck wise, so..... let me tell you druck is HUGE the issue as why people don't hype it isnt because of Druck itself but some fandom political issues. There was a point in time that the Druckies sorta of went on a rampage just dragging other remakes they still do it now but they have def chilled out. They even said things like they hope Skam IT wouldn't be saved by Netflix. Like dude wtf..... It really alienated a ton of people from being part of the fandom that genuinely loves druck but has no interest in participating in the fandom. I am def one of those people I love druck. Matteo still haunts me and will go down as one of my fav isak and Nora so far and cash queens are incredible but i dont really want to participate in the fandom because it actually ruins druck for me and I know a ton of people that feel the same.
(Im not a company stan big hit can suck my ass)
1. Txt is not an aspect of bts? They are another group with a completely different identity. They are talented enough to match bts thats why armys love them and stan them. You are insulting them (and other groups) by saying that they are just another money making machine for bighit as a replacement for bangtan??
2. Idols hate bts lol everyone knows they do. They are from the biggest most prestigious companys yet they are huge flops compared to bts and that alone is enough for them to hate bts.. ik u are not asian but its a huge thing in asia, like if u work in a rich/huge company or are from a rich family u are so much superior to everyone else and then if someone without a strong background becomes more successful than them, the rich ones automatically hate them (if this sounds like the plot of a kdrama its because. Well. Kdramas are asian dramas and are based on real life)
3. Liking bts doesnt make one superior but liking continuously problematic groups does make one inferior and this is the main reason of twt fanwars because 90% of twt armys come from non western cultures and are deeply affected on so many levels by all the shit these groups and companys pull out every single month 👁👄👁 (dont say its just companys fault lol you know that nct member said lets not talk about this topic and its not just one example) ps: dont pull out the bts rapline were also problematic card bc they apologised for it and havent done it again
ok i’m gonna address point by point what you mentioned here. btw i’m assuming you’re different from the last anon i answered regarding “bts isn’t kpop” but if you are the same anon sorry for repeating stuff
1. i didn’t say txt is an “aspect” of bts. i mentioned them because what they are is the second bg big hit has created from scratch and the immediate successors of bts, a company that, until txt, had NOTHING but bts going for them. and even though txt is already becoming successful, the fact is that, just eyeballing it, bts brings in about 90 to 95% of big hit’s total revenue. big hit has a challenge regarding what they will do to cement themselves as a company beyond bts, and txt is the first step in that direction. when i say cash cow i mean a secondary source of income. my intention was not to disrespect txt at all, which i made clear in that textpost!! i don’t even stan txt and i’ve kept saying that they were far better than bts on the end of the year performances!!! i said, and i quote “txt ate them up because txt is a new group (that has a lot of passion and are hardworking ofc, this isn’t attacking them personally)”
just a little caveat though, an idol group is always a money making machine for a company... like. it’s important to me that you know that. like, i hope you know that big hit isn’t looking to make groups saying “oh boy, i hope they flop! i hope they’re happy doing what they like and i will never care about the utilities :)” idol companies are literally some of the most money hungry industries because they often operate at a loss. don’t for a second think that bts and txt and any group is more than an asset for the company, whose sole purpose is to make money.
2. idols hate bts?? listen, in the entertainment industry there’s always gonna be drama and backstabbing, so i’m sure there’s animosity between many groups, i’m not naive enough to say that no one hates bts, the same way i’m sure there are plenty of idols who hate exo, who hate red velvet, who hate x or y. but the way you say this is such a delusional, paranoid way to put it. afaik, the last celeb/musician to trash talk bts publicly was befree or whatever tf his name was, that asshole rapper who mocked namjoon and yoongi and called them sellouts for joining an idol group. and that guy is a fucking failure! i think he even went to jail, didn’t he? so please, tell me who these other idols hating bts are, and where are the receipts so i can blacklist them.
“huge flops” lmao good way to put all the other groups’ efforts down. stop thinking bts’ accomplishments are your own. they’re not. you have no idea the amount of effort each idol group, small or big, puts in just to be able to debut, so stop disrespecting THEM by calling them all flops. i know i’m not korean, i’m not asian, but i have korean friends and according to them all these groups who are supposedly “flops” are doing well in korea. just because they don’t have international success doesn’t mean they’re not commercially acclaimed in their own country. not everyone is out to get bts, i promise you. do you know who’s out to get bts? their akgaes. their sasaengs, and their antis, all those people online who send jimin death threats, who break into their property, who take pictures of their families. THOSE people hate bts and do more harm to them than an idol who says they didn’t like their new album or who said they don’t dance well. like please let go of the victim complex for one minute.
3. one part of stan culture i fucking despise with my whole being is fanwars using cultural appropriation and racism as “gotcha” cards. this is a clear example of this. first you say it’s inferior to like groups who have participated in ca. alright. i will give you that. the you turn and say bts hasn’t done that and that groups such an nct who have done it recently are to blame personally, it’s not just the company’s mismanagement. okay! so by your logic, being a bts stan is superior because even though they HAVE done problematic things, they apologized. it’s really transparent how you pick and choose what is an acceptable apology and what isn’t based on your personal feelings about the group in question.
i just need to know if you are black or if you are muslim or from a minority that has been hurt by cultural appropriation, if you are then you will know that when an idol group apologizes for doing such things, it is no one’s place but their own to decide whether to accept that apology or not. i am not black, or asian, i am a latin woman who can’t tell you whether it’s okay for bts to do the things they have done. you are contradicting yourself by saying other groups who’ve done cultural appropriation are worse, and then turn around and say to me “dont pull out the bts rapline were also problematic card bc they apologised for it and havent done it again” because guess what? not everyone has forgiven bts either! they have said the n word! they have done native american culture appropriation as recently as december 2020 and neither them nor big hit apologized for that! yoongi releasing the mixtape with that jim jones sample in it was NEVER addressed by him. it was a company statement. so who are you to say that the people still hurt by yoongi’s actions, whether intentional or not, can’t talk about it and be mad at them? IT DOESN’T WORK THAT WAY.
i am not here to pass moral judgement, that’s why i don’t bring up ca in arguments. it is not my place to say whether what nct did with the muslim aesthetic should be forgiven, the same way it’s not my place to tell people who like nct that they are “worse” for liking them. people who reduce their stanning to how many “woke points” you get based on the artists you like clearly don’t care about activism in real life, they just care about it online for fanwars. to feel better about themselves for liking “unproblematic kings” and well i have news for you, NO CELEBRITY IS UNPROBLEMATIC. bts has learned from their mistakes, but they will continue to make mistakes every once in a while, case in point, the jim jones thing and the native american teepees appropriation.
i mean aladdin has always used indian influences and indian culture in the story and the original story came from china in the first place
this is got really long im so sorry, i also don’t know what this ask initially responded to, so im just Giving All My Thoughts On Disney And Culture
disclaimer that i’m tryna be as accurate and factual as i can without trivializing or minimizing the opinions and valid complaints/concerns from the people that this conversation actually is about they being arabic middle eastern and desi people, i’m just a chinese girl with lots of Thoughts And Opinions and i happen to know way too much about disney
oh ik disney’s (esp disney animation’s) relationship w other cultures has been Spotty at the most, lot of homogenizing, lot of misrepresentations, but i give them credit for trying esp when other studios would not (think about all the knock off animated movies that came out during the disney renaissance, none of them even made the effort to do something original that was immersed in another culture, like mulan and how it used chinese history was problematic but it was still respectful and ridiculously powerful representation for me as a chinese woman when i was a kid). this whole thing wouldn’t be as big of an issue if jasmine didn’t serve as important representation in the first place.
the original aladdin story as told in 1001 nights originated in the middle east but was set in china, though the names in the story were definitely not chinese (mustapha, badroulbadour) so already there’s some cultural confusion there. the deal with the 1992 animated disney aladdin was that they used the setting as literally setting, just straight up a place where a story was being told. the disney story as is could have been told literally anywhere just lifting the basic plot points of “poor kid finds magical object with magical being inside to make him rich and falls in love with the daughter of the most powerful man in the area while that man’s advisor try’s to break them apart”. you could take that concept and set in the world of avatar the last airbender or in in the future or in some other random setting. since the story is so basic they decided to a. honor and adapt the specific story of aladdin and the magical lamp from 1001 nights by b. make it accurate setting it in a general middle east-y area.
ALSO AS A SIDENOTE THE PRODUCTION HISTORY FOR DISNEY ALADDIN WAS GREATLY INFLUENCED BY THE PRODUCTION OF THE MOVIE THE THIEF AND THE COBBLER. A PAST DISNEY ANIMATOR WAS WORKING ON HIS PASSION PROJECT THE THIEF AND THE COBBLER AND JEFFREY KATZENBERG SAID TO LITTLE MERMAID (and future moana) DIRECTORS JOHN MUSKER AND RON CLEMENTS “HEY LETS SEE IF WE CAN MAKE MONEY OFF THIS” AND MUSKER AND CLEMENTS SAID “OK”. AND ALADDIN PROCEEDED TO MAKE LOTS OF MONEY.
ok so to create that “general middle east-y area” setting of aladdin the production team for disney animation combined elements and aesthetics from different parts of the middle east both modern and more ancient. i see old descriptions of persia and the ottoman empire (the offices of “sultan and “grand vizer” were turkish/ottoman) as some of the main ones. they did also use indian influences the most notable i think obviously is the taj mahal as reference for the sultan and jasmine’s palace. in doing so and creating the fictional country of agrabah which was a hodgepodge of all these different cultures, making it really hard to unanimously pin down any real place as its setting. that in turn makes casting a live action adaptation of this already culturally confused movie really difficult.
to my knowledge the actor playing aladdin, mena massoud is actually arabic. sidenote he’s also a newcomer to hollywood which is always exciting especially for people/actors of color. people are upset that naomi scott, jasmine’s actress is indian (half indian, i may add) not arabic and her casting implies that indian and arabic people are interchangeable, which obviously they are not and should not be. it should also be noted that “indian” is not some monolithic group, it’s very diverse just as the term “asian” or “african” or “latinx” might be. so be careful with that. the concept of any sort of racial or ethnic identity is super fluid and something that a lot of people (myself included lmao) kind of struggle with and have trouble defining. but back on track, will smith as the genie i’m pretty down with, i think he’s a great comedian and especially with robin williams having passed and james monroe iglehart winning a tony as the genie in aladdin on broadway, the precedent of the genie being depicted by a black actor is great.
you also shouldn’t be calling naomi scott white. she’s half indian, and that’s a very real and important part of her identity and calling her “white” to feel good about dragging someone on the internet is straight up erasure. you shouldn’t call her white unless you want to call other actors like zendaya, ruth negga, chloe bennet, and so many others who i’m forgetting white, which you wouldn’t. and so you shouldn’t call naomi scott white either.
given how the story of aladdin all the way back to its original roots as a short story is so confused in terms of culture, everything about the live action disney aladdin should have been very careful. and it’s also important in my opinion to remember that aladdin is set in a very fictional place that is essentially a stew of aesthetics and historical influences from the general geographic area of the middle east and india. every complaint from arabic and middle eastern people about naomi scott’s casting is valid and they should be understood. if there’s one thing to take away from all these ridiculously long paragraphs i wrote, it’s that. i just wanted to also address aladdin’s origins as a product of the disney company and the live action’s subsequent status as an adaptation of an adaptation. it’s all complicated. open dialogue is important.
I may be the only one who thinks this but don't you think sometimes yoongi can be a bit overboard when it comes to jin? I was watching the bts festa in 2015 & he called jin "boring" and asked him why he films himself eating & idk the entire time jin didn't look right. even with the roommate festa thing we had this year, when jin said they talked for like "3 seconds" idk i don't doubt their friendship, obviously they're close but i just feel bad for jin sometimes bc of it
No- you’re not alone! I know what you mean! I feel that way all the time! And ik exactly why you mean with the Home Party too! When Jin feels guilty he just looks like a kick puppy- even tho I can tell he tries to hide it- and it just tugs at your heartstrings. (Poor Seokjin T~T). I think he might be a bit much too and but The thing is it’s that it’s in their culture- I’m assuming your non-Korean. But it’s not seen as mean in their culture for Koreans to point out people’s fault and mistakes even tho over here it’s seen as hurtful and a mean thing to do. Koreans do get sad over being nitpicked at their faults but it’s not seen as such a big deal as it would be in other parts of the world. The reason why it’s seen especially on Suga is because Suga is the closest to Jin’s age. Age is regarded as such an important thing in their culture, so Koreans ( generally but BTS esp.) would show upmost respect for their elders even if perhaps the elder is wrong and they’re right- even if they’ve been living together as long as BTS has. The importance of age hit me in the 4th Anniversary FM when Hoseok had such different reactions to not going along with his plans for the members. It’s a big barrier. Honestly, that’s the only reason the others don’t pick at Seokjins fault as much as the others. Seokjin himself does it too- A LOT( since he’s the oldest). Try not to feel so bad. BTS isn’t trying to put eachother down. I’ll also try to not feel bad! It breaks my heart T~T
Honestly I feel the baddest for Taehyung becuz he’s the second to youngest, and unlike JK he tends to be underestimated by the other members- it’s almost like EVERYONE “attacks” him. And to make it worse, he’s not good at arguing and that easily makes him a victim to self hatred and depression- he’ll feel like other members are right because he can’t defend himself as he wants to and hate that he can’t defend himself as he wants to-. U can see it in little snip bits like when Taehyung said himself he tends to not have faith in himself and thought his smile was weird and in 2016 he probably forced himself to smile less for that very reason. You can see how his confidence just dropped- In 2013 he would as weird as he could no matter what, brush away compliments with a smile and by 2016 u got him saying this self hating comments and him looking at the ground and frowning all the time and BTS just talking over and ignoring him everytime he speaks. It breaks my heart T~T! I’m pretty sure the reason Taehyung broke so much was because he probably wasn’t used to such criticism before and it took a toll on him when reality hit him. He’s getting better now but… still I just feel so bad even tho ik I shouldn’t. Ik exactly how he feeling so sometimes I just want to tell him I love him and he’s perfect the way he is and to believe in himself but WAHHH TT~TT
I love Seokjin too- he’s my bias a million times over- but he honestly got lucky as the oldest and I bless God each time I realize how lucky he was. But I also feel bad for Taehyung- urgh. I wish i could tell BTS to cut down on it, but mental health isn’t treated as much as an issue in Korea as other places ( it SHOULD- since it’s, I believe, the 2nd most suicidal country?). Mental health isn’t taken that seriously in other countries either tho. It’s so important though…
Anyways, you’re not alone( YNWA)! But it’s not how it seems. It was a big culture shock to me too when BTS would call eachother ugly and everyone would laugh. I really want them to be nicer to each other…
Hoe heb je Nederlands geleerd en waarom heb je eigenlijk naar Nederland verhuisd? Ik weet dat de VK rijk is zoals Nederland dus ja waarom? I also moved to the Netherlands but from Mexico;)
Hallo f-van-lieshout! Bedankt voor jouw vragen. Ik zal in het Engels antwoorden omdat mijn nederlandse nog niet perfect is. :)
So, I started learning Dutch before I moved to the Netherlands using mobile apps like DuoLingo to begin with to help me to become a bit familiar with how the language sounded and the basics of how to structure simple phrases and sentences. Then after I moved, I took some classes (which sadly I had to stop due to work restraints) and decided to try and immerse myself as much as possible. I am not required to speak Dutch for my job, so this can be rather difficult when I am busy! It takes a lot of motivation.
When I have time, I watch children’s programmes and cartoons as I feel the Dutch is simple and has a nice pace for me to grasp. I also take as many opportunities as I can to practice when I am out and about. :) So, this will include little things like asking where something is in a supermarket, or trying to generally converse about the weather when someone is feeling chatty. I know that at the moment my spoken Dutch is rather slow, but I feel this exposure and practice really helps. :)
And as for why I moved to the Netherlands. It was in part due to my partner getting a job out here and also in part wanting to explore a new place to live. My partner and I like to travel a lot when we get the chance, and had spoken about moving to numerous countries together whilst we’re both still young(ish!). The Netherlands isn’t far away from England so it wasn’t too big a transition for our first relocation, but it’s still been really interesting learning about the differences in culture and language.
Dus dat is waarom! Ik hoop dat ik je vragen goed beantwoord heb!
En jij? Waarom ben je naar Nederland verhuisd? Ik ben nog nooit in Mexico geweest, maar op een dag zou ik graag willen bezoeken. :)
Fijne dag en tot ziens. :)
10 wonderful Nigerian festivals that make us proud of our culture!
10 wonderful Nigerian festivals that make us proud of our culture!
Culture is something that can divide or bind, depending on what you choose to make of it, but something that has always made Nigeria unique – nay, made Nigeria great! – are the festivals that we have. Nigerian festivals dating back hundreds of years, each with rich cultural heritage and folklore behind it.
I will personally always maintain that the advent of external religion is killing a lot of our old ways – and not always for the better – but part of our goal here at Viva Naija is to commit these things: our way of life and the ways of our ancestors to perpetuity, lest we forget. Here are ten of our favourite Nigerian festivals!
1. Eyo Festival
Unique to Lagos and traditionally performed on Lagos Island, the Eyo festival is one of the most well known festivals of the Yoruba people.
The word ‘eyo’ refers to the costumed dancers or masquerades, that perform during the festival. The origin of this event is unknown owing to its clandestine nature, but it was previously believed to be associated with escorting the soul of a dead king to the after life or in the welcoming another king. Today, it is called for whenever tradition and customs demand it, although it is usually held as part of the final burial rites of a highly regarded chief in the king’s court. This is visible in the long-held belief that the white-clad Eyo masquerades represent the spirits of the dead and are referred to in Yoruba as “agogoro eyo” (literally: “tall eyo”).
On the Eyo day, the main highway in the heart of the city (from the end of Carter Bridge to Tinubu Square) is closed to traffic, allowing for a procession from Idumota to the Iga ldungaran Palace. The first known date of an Eyo Festival was the 20th of February 1854, to commemorate the life of Oba Akintoye.
2. Sango Festival
Another Yoruba display of strength and gods, the Sango Festival is held in honour of Sango, Omoekun (“son of a tiger”), from whom the present day Alaafin of Oyo Oba derives the title. Sango was the second son of Oranyan, the first alaafin (ruler), and the seventh grandchild of Oduduwa in Ile Ife. Upon the death of Oduduwa, the grandchildren dispersed from Ile Ife, forming the different Yoruba kingdoms in the western part of Nigeria.
Sango is considered powerful and mighty, a symbol of power and truth. A warrior so invincible that he amassed a formidable empire in Africa and transported Oyo culture beyond the Oyo Empire.
During the festival, the Sango faithful are decorated in beautifully, all dressed in fiery red while the Ifa priests are clothed in white regalia – the two strongest colours of the Yoruba kingdom.  Masquerades, drummers and hundreds of traditional dancers still give this festival the feel of one of the most respected attractions in the country.
  3. Okere Juju
One of the most powerful events of the year for the Itsekiri people, Okere Juju (or the Awan’kere Festival) is an annual festival celebrated by the Itsekiri people of Okere which is in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.  It is a fertility festival, which date back to the 15th Century when the community was confounded by a Benin warlord called Ekpenede (Ekpen), but most Itsekiri people see it as the welcoming of the rainy season as it is of utmost importance that the final day ends in torrential rainfall.
Given that the the festival is a plea for fertility and plenty, scenes from the ensuing days depict rites with mimes of sexual acts, phallic symbols and lewd songs replete with fertility images. Explicitly expressive dance and movements take place between the spectators and performers. The Masquerades: (i)    Otsogwu-Umale – this is the father masquerade. He is always attired in resplendent white. (ii) Okpoye – This is the mother masquerade. She is always dressed in sack cloth. (iii) Children – Numerous and wear costumes of varied colours. All the masquerades apart from the Okpye, carry two specially designed whips called “Ukpatsan”, which produces gunshot-like sounds when the masquerades whip the floor with it. The festival takes place during the rainy season to ensure a conducive environment for the deity, Okioro, who lives in the waters. During the festival masquerades and other performers splash about in the rains in a symbolic washing away of evil spells and diseases from peoples’ bodies. The festival lasts for five weeks with one performance each week on succeeding days.  The festival combines both the sacred, in its numerous rituals, and the profane in its orgiastic dance and lewd songs.  Underlying it all, is the expectation and yearning for a life more abundant.
  4. Leboku New Yam Festival
The New Yam festival is popular all over Nigeria, particularly in the southern parts of the country. The Igbos have their festivals known as Iri ji ohu, Iwa ji or Ike ji while the Yorubas call theirs “Ijesu”.
If you want to experience a New Yam festival that would involve the celebration of the ancestral spirits and the earth goddess though, you should visit Yakurr in Cross River State where the Leboku New Yam Festival takes place. This annual festival packs so many symbols and activities within three weeks. This includes parading engaged maidens, exchanging visits to families, appeasing the ancestors, and ensuring that no one does any intense farming during this period.
5. Argungu Fishing Festival
The popular Argungu Fishing Festival is one of the most famous and exciting traditional festivals in Nigeria. The four-day annual festival dates back to 1934 and has continued with the alluring dynamics growing each passing year. The festival is an all-men affair; women can be present purely as spectators.
The fishing festival is a competition among the fishermen of the area to determine who catches the biggest fish and proves his skill once and for all. The festival takes place at the Matan Fada River in Argungu, Kebbi State.
The sound of a gunshot signals the commencement of the competition, with the anxious and excited competitors jumping into the river to begin the search for the ‘big’ catch. This lasts for an hour, at the end of which each competitor presents his catch for weighing, to determine which fish is the biggest. It is awesome, if smelly, stuff!
  6. The Durbars of Hausaland
The durbars have been a part of Hausaland for over five hundred years and their majesty, pomp and splendour is undeniable. The annual festival celebrated in several cities of Nigeria. It is celebrated at the culmination of Muslim festivals Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. It begins with prayers, followed by a parade of the Emir and his entourage on horses, accompanied by music players, and ending at the Emir’s palace.
Durbar festivals are organised in cities such as Kano, Katsina and Bida with the Katsina durbar possibly being the most colourful. Introduced by Sarki Muhammadu Rumfa of Kano in the late 14th century as a way of demonstrating military power and skills before going to war, the durbar has now become quite a tourist attraction. The festival is also an opportunity for local leaders to pay homage to emir throughout the jahi cheering.
  7. Sharo/Shadi Festival of the Fulanis
If you have heard of coming of age festivals where young men show off virility and strength, they were probably based on the Sharo or Shadi festival of the Fulanis! In this rite of passage, young men are escorted by maidens to the event venue and led into a ring formed by spectators, their chests exposed. The frenzied drumming, singing and cheers of the crowd combine to create an atmosphere of excitement!
Each participant is flogged by another and they are expected to endure the pain for as long as the exercise lasts, to demonstrate and prove their manhood. Although not all the young men are able to endure the excruciating pain; which at times leaves permanent scars on their bodies, those who do endure to the end are certified mature and free to choose a girl to marry.
  8. Igue Festival
The most important festival in the calendar of the Benin kingdom, the Igue festival takes place annually towards the end of the year as Bini chiefs headed by the Oba celebrate the lives and deaths of the obas that have gone before. This  celebration is done to invoke their blessing on the reigning monarch, his family and subjects.
The Igue festival, which is a period of offering thanks to the gods for sparing lives and asking for blessings, is also used for offering sacrifices to some deities in the palace. During this period, chieftaincy title holders display their Eben emblem in the Ugie dance as they appear in their attire, according to the type of dress the Oba bestowed on individual chiefs during the conferment of title, while the Oba sits majestically in the royal chamber (Ogi-Ukpo). The Igue festival is also a period given to the driving away of evil spirits (Ubi), and bringing blessings (Ewere) to every home in the kingdom.
  9. Onitsha Ivory Festival
While most festivals in Nigeria revolve around men (with some even explicitly banning women from the scene), the Onitsha ivory festival is a celebration of womanhood, beauty and adornment.
Celebrated by the Igbos, the Onitsha Ivory Festival involves wives of prominent and wealthy men gather ivory and coral beads as they prepare for the celebrations. On the day of the festival, the Onitsha woman who has acquired enough ivory and coral to kit herself out in the ivory costume can claim the title of odu or ‘ivory holder’. To qualify as an ivory holder, a woman is expected to have two large pieces of ivory, one to be worn on each leg. Each piece of ivory usually weighs about 56 pounds or 25 kilos so this is no mean feat. Also, the woman has to wear two other pieces of ivory on her wrists. In addition to these are coral and gold necklaces, with which she adorns her herself.
  10. Osun Festival
And now, we return to the west as we mention perhaps one of the most iportant festivals in the Yoruba calendar: the Osun festival. At the end of the rains in July/August, the Osun festival is held at the sacred Osogbo forest for seven days where devotees of the river goddess Osun pay homage to her.
At the shrine of this goddess of fertility and protection, the Osun priests not only celebrate their deity but also conduct rituals for the protection of her followers. Followers believe in the potency of the goddess to hear their requests and provide solutions to their problems, as even barren women  are believed to be blessed with children when they attend this festival.
