I see a lot of people saying that the tech Sony created for Spiderverse led to an even cooler sequel that revolutionized CGI animation (again), which is true, BUT you can't forget The Mitchells vs. The Machines which took the original Spiderverse tech, turned it on its head, and made it something truly amazing. kacchan of the bakugous' no good very bad year*

*(Its actually just over a year but sshhh!)

a non-exhaustive (and yet I am exhausted) timeline that asks the question: what if you got your world view rocked so hard and so frequently that it made you a better person?

Prologue: April

The Sludge Villain Incident: All the pro's compliment his bravery and invite him to be a sidekick for them someday but look at his face. He was rescued by quirkless Deku and All Might and he Can't. Accept it. ("Don't look down on me!!") Also his first real brush with death. Happy birthday! Somehow I don't think this was how he wanted to meet All Might, either.

And so one year later:

April

So we start with Deku vs Kacchan, wherein Kacchan has his mental rocked on the very first day of class when, even though he scored first in the entrance exam, his classmates are stronger than him and point out his mistakes, and he vows that this is the last time he'll be defeated.

Next is the USJ attack and oh shit's real now, this is the second time in two years he's been attacked by actual villains trying to kill him

Happy birthday!

May

Sports Festival, and he wins but it isn't a total victory like he wanted. He didn't win the race, or the calvary battle, and How can he prove to himself Deku All Might everyone that he's the best if his opponents refuse to go all out? Why did Todoroki only do that for Deku? Why wasn't he good enough to get his best effort??

June

Final exams and he gets the snot (and worse) beat out of him by All Might and Deku actually yells at him because for the first (and last) time in his life Katsuki says this:

July

Two Heroes, fighting villains again, what's going on with All Might?

and then...

Training camp/ getting kidnapped by the LOV, and if only he'd been stronger they wouldn't have taken him, and why the fuck does everyone think he should be a villain?!

Kamino Ward and All Might losing his powers and no, he would have gotten out on his own, Deku and Kirishima and Iida just happened to have been the best option at the time...

August

Failing the provisional license exam (falling behind his classmates again!)

September

Deku vs Kacchan 2: AKA “Don’t you dare worry about me! Attack me! Why won’t you fight back!? Why did I end up having to chase after someone who was always so far behind me!? Why did a damn small fry like you get strong, and become the number one hero’s sidekick – his favorite!? You got so much better! And I destroyed All Might! I admired him so much…but it’s because of me that he ended up losing his power! If I had been stronger…if I hadn’t been kidnapped by villains, then it never would have happened. All Might knows it was my fault but hasn’t said anything. Everyone has to know though! I can’t get it out of my head! It’s like it’s constantly playing on loop, so what the hell am I supposed to DO!?”

He and Izuku are proper rivals now. He learns the truth about One For All and starts helping Izuku to train his power. They get put on house arrest but it's worth it (right?)

Izuku and his other classmates take part in a raid of Shie Hassaikai (gotta catch up, can't fall behind). Katsuki starts remedial classes.

October

School festival. He overhears general studies students complaining about the hero course, is reluctant to join the band because it'll seem like a slap in the face from the hero course who caused their stress. "Stop trying to get on their good side! We're not here to make friends! We're here to fight! If we're gonna put on a show then we can't hold anything back! Let's murder everyone at UA with killer music!" Katsuki joins the band. (AKA Katsuki's survivor's guilt about Kamino is redirected through the power of friendship.)

December

Heroes Rising- accepting OFA even though it means Izuku loses his power that he's worked to hard to make his own because they need to win to save, right? Waking up in the hospital with his arms broken, no memory of how they did it (unless....?)

Finaallly getting his provisional license and feeling like he can catch up; actually achieving a perfect victory in hero training; and then Izuku gets another quirk.

January

Learning about the Todoroki's; Izuku projecting hard onto Icy Hot about forgiveness right in front of his mapo tofu

World Heroes Mission, getting stabbed a whole lot; Deku saves the world with someone else by his side this time (seriously what's with Izuku's ability to turn everyone around him into a hero?! Also why are Izuku and Roddy like that?)

March

War with the Paranormal Liberation Front, he's the only one who can support Izuku when Shigaraki is looking for One For All because he's the only one who knows. His body moves on its own; he gets stabbed AGAIN. (He finally gets it now, what Izuku had meant when he saved him from the sludge villain a year ago.)

Waking up in the hospital and Izuku is in a coma, then he disappears before Katsuki gets to say what he's been wanting to say to him for a while now.

April

Finally apologizing and bringing Izuku back, (and somewhere along the way "Don't look down on me!" turned into "Stop trying to win this on your own!" and "You've made every right choice as OFA's successor, but I can see that you're lost right now.")

My Hero Academia: You're Next- Whatever the FUCK is about to happen during the new movie (if he gets impaled AGAIN, istg.)

Happy birthday you crazy kid.

May

The war. "Can I still catch up to you, Izuku?" Also: This is probably when he remembers that he once held One for All

Defeating All for One, declaring himself the final boss; saving All Might, and: "I'm the guy who steps in when the nerd can't handle it all on his own." and: "[Izuku] ...feels like I could even surpass you right now!" and "Izuku, I'll no longer get in your way." AND: "I'm Kacchan of the Bakugous, you dumbass!"

"Do your best, Izuku!" "Don't you dare let me surpass you, Izuku!"

And Izuku wins with a punch that he propelled him through that literally changes the weather. They win. ("This is... our story!!" oh my god he literally has done such a 180.)

And now Izuku doesn't have his quirk anymore.

"I guess I thought... we'd be competing... and I'd be on your heels... for the rest... of our.. lives..."

In summary: Kacchan of the Bakugou's had such a no-good-very-bad-year wherein he got his shit rocked so hard and so frequently that he became a better person through the power of letting go and living well jk pulling his head out of his ass, learning to rely on other people, and, honestly, after putting this whole thing together, probably definitely also falling in love.

Let's all go feral over light symbolism! <3

I noticed that in the Case of the Creeping Forest, we have Crystal & Charles with their own lantern in the forest.

Edwin and Monty with their own lantern.

Neither of those lanterns is the same as the one that Edwin gave to Charles when they met.

The Cat King extinguishes Monty's flame just before lighting his own Chandelier and outing Monty to Edwin, hoping it will garner favor for himself in Edwin's eyes.

When Charles descends into Hell, he doesn't have the lantern in hand yet. He pulls it out of his Bag-of-Tricks in the darkness of the Doll House.

As the fandom has already pointed out, the lantern that Edwin gave Charles when he was dying is the same lantern Charles brings into Hell to save Edwin.

Excuse me but the idea of MC and Xav sitting on their respective balconies and texting each other The Tea while people watching in their neighborhood is both so silly and so endearing to me.

So let's go on a small adventure, shall we?

Warnings: None.

Just fluff. Pure, unadulterated fluff.

The late morning sun was already warming you through the windows of your tiny apartment before you'd even stepped foot outside. It was finally mid-spring in Linkon, which meant you could enjoy your late breakfast on the patio without having to worry about a stray chill or errant frost dampening your weekly Saturday 'brunch' plans.

Opening the patio door with your granola bar in one hand and phone in the other, you settle into the cushioned bench that overlooked your apartment courtyard and took a deep breath. Sometimes it felt like winter was neverending in Linkon, but you could finally feel the tension of the gripping cold that had settled in your bones start to slowly bleed from you.

After getting comfortable, you finally pulled out your phone, and quickly found your brunch 'date's' contact info, sending him the customary "Get up it's people watching hour" text.

[Hey Xav, you up? I'm already on my balcony?]

It doesn't take long for his reply. This has been your weekly tradition for a few months now. Ever since you had both just so happened to see that kid getting dragged down the street by the monstrous hound, it had become something of a... habit for the two of you to text each other the funny happenings on your street when you were home. Not that either of you were particularly prone to gossip, but the simple domesticity of it was oddly comforting after a long week of getting slogged on by wanderers.

[Yeah I'm up. Give me a sec]

The soft ping of your notification broke the peace, followed shortly by the shuffling of his patio door sliding open from above you. Sure, you could simply call out and greet him, as the acoustics out here are great and the soundproofing is atrocious, but the silence is cozy, and the atmosphere almost feels magical. This is your ritual, after all.

It's a bit like a storybook scene, you think, the two of you sharing a moment in time together yet still separated by some outside force. Maybe it was silly, but the fabricated longing almost made it feel romantic in a way that you're sure your neighbor would find ridiculous.

When you hear his footsteps above you come to a halt, you immediately notice something in particular is missing, however.

[You forgot your coffee Xav. Are you gonna be able to stay awake?]

[How could U tell?]

[I didn't smell any burning 🤭🔥]

He doesn't reply, but you can hear the huff he makes over the railing as his footsteps retreat, fading behind the sliding door once again. You don't even try to hold back the laughter his reaction elicits from you, hopeful the concrete carries it to him easily.

When he finally does reemerge, faint smell of bitter charred beans on the wind, his phone is already buzzing with the morning's newest additions to your people watching portfolios.

An older man you'd long ago dubbed "Green Thumb" who liked to frequent the flower garden outside your apartment complex was already taking photos of the new stargazer lily blossoms that had just opened this morning. So enamored by the vibrant petals, he didn't even seem to notice the couple he'd backed into who'd happened to spill their groceries all over the sidewalk. You heard Xavier call "Watch out!" From above you when he'd recognized the impending impact, but at your distance, it was no use.

[That was nice of you Xav. Too bad it didn't help 🫠]

[I can't believe they didn't see Green Thumb. He was so hard to miss. Even when Ur distracted U still see better]

[HEY! I'm not the one who sleep walks! 💀]

[And yet I'm always there to guard Ur back partner]

He's right of course, though you're not going to tell him. Xavier likes to play the part of a soft and harmless little thing, but it doesn't take much to stoke the hunter into burning hotter than you intended. His evol might be light, but you know better than anyone that light, under careful concentration, can start a blazing fire if you're not mindful. His teasing isn't ever harmful though, so instead you decide to simply poke the bear.

[Only because I'm starting to suspect you like it back there]

The distinct sound of a phone accidentally hitting the concrete marks the end of that thread.

Its not long before another of your regulars, pair of young kids Xavier had called the Trouble Twins arrived on scene. Aptly named for the number of times their poor mother has chastised them for chasing the ducks and picking the flowers, the siblings were quite the rambunctious duo. Today they seem to be a few steps ahead of their vigilant mother, rushing into the park with high-pitched hollers and improvised swords made of small branches they'd found. Today's unfortunate conquest seemed to be the pigeons that were being fed by the local grannies.

[They look like a pair of knights today don't they?]

[Knights? Don't knights usually protect people?]

[Maybe they're protecting us from the pigeons]

[Xavier those old ladies look pretty mad idk. That one even tried to chase the boy and almost caught him!]

The pause in messages was punctuated by his soft laughter above you, carried on the spring breeze. It was so warm, so genuine, so comfortable. You didn't need a mirror to feel the heat bloom in your cheeks; the overwhelming sensation of ardor flooding you at the the very sound.

[You're right. He needs more training. A good Knight should never be caught by an old lady]

[.... I don't think that's the message here Xav]

The rest of your morning goes back and forth like this for another hour. Watching your favorite people pass by, concocting new and interesting stories for them as they pass your balconies. Xavier has very interesting and oddly insightful opinions on those around him, considering you don't really recall seeing him with many friends. None the less, his company and companionship on your balconies has easily become your favorite part of the week. The only noises between you are the laughter that passes back and forth as the texts volley from one to another.

Finally, as the afternoon sun starts to become an uncomfortable heat, your phone chimes once more.

[I'm getting kind of hungry]

[Oh good. You're warning me this time. Thanks!]

[What?]

[No. I was going to ask if U wanted to go to lunch. With me, I mean?]

And just like that, the storybook was snapping shut. No longer a fragment lost in time where two people gazed at the same scene together from two separate places, but a tangible moment you could step into. Something intimate and real.

Perhaps you stayed in this thought a moment too long, or your silence below him made him second guess himself, as the chime of your phone snapped you out of your daze again.

[I didn't mean to impose if U have plans]

Fumbling with the suddenly slippery device, softly cursing, and praying he didn't hear, you quickly hammer out the only thing that's been playing in your head on repeat-
