A fiercely witty, complex and independent character - she was Always her own woman, only briefly having romantic relationships and it never defined her character for 6 seasons on both Buffy & Angel. Unfortunately the show producer was an abusive misogynist who targeted Cordelia's character specifically for humiliation when her actress Charisma Carpenter became pregnant. He is a colossal dick, and a terrible writer. Cordelia and Charisma deserved better.

Steph was a wildly popular character who was made Robin for a couple month specifically in preparation to kill her off in the War Games cross over event. During her time as robin comics fans responded so well that one of the writers asked if they should keep her alive and let her have a real run but an editor refused. Instead she was horrifically punished by the narrative for... doing exactly what every robin has done always. Not listening to batman, rescuing him, trying to earn his approval. Unlike the other robins she was murdered in a way that implied some kind of sexual assault while none of her friends or mentors looked for her. Did i mention she was 15?

So you covered a lot of the shows Livvy and Maggie watched as little girls but what about mom and dad? Do they watch a lot of TV ? I'm asking because I'm on my probably 16th friend's rewatch and it came to me if Chrissy liked the show 🤷🏻‍♀️

They’re both definitely more movie people, just because of how busy they are, but I think Chrissy would totally love Friends and I bet gets snuggled in with wine to watch it after the girls go to bed. Total comfort show for her. I love how she could probably see herself in both Rachel and Monica. She would love Buffy and Sabrina the Teenage Witch too. Oh and Beauty and the Beast the series! She eats that up.

Eddie honestly would get more invested in the girls’ shows to be honest 😆 you know he meanders into the living room, acting like he’s busy, but actually just watching cartoons when X-men, Batman the Animated Series or Gargoyles are on. I could see him loving that Redwall series on PBS.

They probably both get invested in shows like The West Wing, Twin Peaks, X-Files, Law and Order, etc. I could also see them watching Hercules, Xenon: Warrior Princess, Stargate and Highlander together.

Pondering with my partner which of my many interests are such deeply ingrained Fandoms that I'd seriously consider tattooing some symbol of them onto my body somewhere. Things that induced so much hyperfixation they took over my brain for huge swathes of time, not just in intensity, but also endurance.

I immediately thought of four, thought two of them could be smooshed together, thought of another fourth, and fifth, and then pondered whether those should be smooshed together...

Gaiman: Sandman, Good Omens, American Gods, Neverwhere, Stardust, etc. Henson: Muppets, Fraggles, Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Storyteller, etc.

But then that overlaps with the Frouds...

I will likely never actually put most of these on my body, if only because I tend to avoid the assumption of permanence by default. But I have found myself trying to figure out how I would design tattoos for them many times. Perhaps another anklet, like the one for my too-many gods, but looking like jewelry instead of nature, with charms for each fandom? Something relatively subtle.

The thing is, everything on this list except Dragon Age has lasted multiple decades so far, and I've written well over 400k words of DA fanfic most of which self-insert, so I feel safe saying that one will stick, too.

Still, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer were both intensely important to me in adolescence, and I'll never give up the swag I have for them, but I don't find myself pondering tattoos for them. Though if I went the charm anklet route, I probably would add the TNG symbol.

And the Lord of the Rings movies were at least as invasive, but it was fleeting, if only because I quickly found that, for all the enchantment, I was kind of miserable from it. Like eating fairy fruit. I just felt bereft whenever I paused to look up. It's not good for me, so I put it down.

I seem to put back down the fandoms where I'm very steeped in one particular branch, but don't want to dig into the entire franchise? Like, Batman: The Animated Series, but I never got into the comics, or indeed, LotR and ST:TNG. Star Wars is definitely on that list, and Doctor Who, Babylon 5. Sci Fi has to fight harder for my love than Fantasy, I know, but it's also how big the universe already is when I arrive, and how much pushback I get from those already steeped in it? I guess, sometimes I see that bigger universe and want to dive in. Sometimes I see that bigger universe and decide I don't feel like drowning today. I don't know.

On the other hand, I have never balked at taking on the Addams Family, but it has never felt like a deep love, the same way, no matter how many times I return to it. It's always a joyful return, but it doesn't quite feel like a place I need to live? Miyazaki's work is the same way. I'm unlikely to ever turn down a visit, but it's not home.

And that's just looking at the ones for which there's some video element. What about my book-only loves? My music loves? My art loves? My other collections, like Barbies? Don't they matter, too? Of course they do. But they don't take over my brain to the same degree. Or, at least, not as easily. For all that I'm looking forward to this Barbie movie, I doubt it will plug into my love of collecting the dolls very much.

I don't know. I feel like I should get my relationships with Fandoms more than I do. It's not like I don't have a lifetime of practice, right? But maybe that's the thing - it's so much of my life, it's an endless fractal, and no one level seems to have a clear-cut boundary around it. Each bleeds into the next. I know what is and is not mine, but I don't always know why, or how deep it goes.

The Vampire Diaries, Ep. 1x06

Lost Girls

by some arguments, every girl in this show is a lost girl.

we begin with a historical flashback. i love historical flashbacks (in supernatural shows and otherwise). the best episode of late seasons teen wolf is undoubtedly the bete du gevaudan episode in season five. not only does it bring back crystal reed in a more satisfying role, it takes place entirely in eighteenth century france. many of the best moments of buffy take place in this past. taking the viewer to the past allows us to see how these characters became themselves. seeing the start explains the end.

i was very excited to see the historical flashbacks, and i will talk about the content of them, but i must first say 'holy historical inaccuracy, batman!' no one ever dressed like any of these people. also, stefan is wearing the stupidest coat i've ever seen. it look terrible! it's a bit unnerving how bad it is.

okay, so it's virginia in eighteen sixty four. they were always going to be confederates. which begs the question, why not just make it eighteen forty four or eighteen eighty four or something? why do we have to see damon in a confederate uniform? yeah, he's not very committed to the confederate cause or whatever, but they own slaves, and he's in the army. and i'm supposed to like these people?! i'm supposed to root for the former confederate and slave owner? i'm supposed to want him to get his happy ending. no thank you. and i am fucking sure the show isn't going to discuss this. if they do, it will be unsubtle and terrible. save me, please.

my final flashback thought: katherine has big darla vibes. the scene where she turns stefan is so reminiscent of angel's siring in becoming (part one). i think buffy did it better, but i am always happy to see more unhinged, evil vampire women. let's hope katherine gets to skip at least one darla plot line...

to tie the flashbacks in to the rest of the episode: is katherine a lost girl? i certainly think so. she's lost in a different way than the present day girls on the show. katherine is not a girl who is lost. she has lost being a girl. instead of girl, she is monster. she looks like a girl and should be a girl. however, she is only monster made flesh, evil in a beautiful mask. she has lost girlhood.

this also leads to the realization that stefan's obsession with elena is largely mommy issues. (at least his initial obsession.) damon fits this too. they are both into her because she reminds them of the woman who made them, of their some-kind-of-mother. katherine is not their biological mother, but she is their mother in the ways that matter most after over a century.

now on to the obvious lost girl: vicki. i've had some pretty bad stuff to say about the writing of vicki in previous episodes—that has not changed. vicki continues to have no agency. she is certainly lost, lost in her life. she has nothing to live for (except drugs). she has nothing to do, no one to love. everything she does feels more like a dart thrown at a wall than an intentional choice. she has been kidnapped by damon, she has been drugged by damon. she has been killed by damon. (i have to admit that the conversation immediately before he killed her was wonderful. damon is so out of touch with reality and the ways that humans normally conduct themselves are nearly in a different reality from his actions.) at none of those points did she have anything to do with the decisions being made about her body.

even when she kills news boy (yay!), that's not her doing. she is merely answering the whims of her body, not consciously choosing what to do. this entire plot line is a war over vicki's body, and how to react to her becoming a vampire. the one person who is not consulted on this is vicki. it's a proxy war for damon and stefan, not a place to listen to and help vicki. they don't ask what she wants, don't think about her as a character who can drive her own narrative, just a pawn in their fucked up family games.

the montage of her and damon was deeply funny. for one thing, damon dancing on the ceiling is one of the funniest things i've ever seen in my life. despite reports to the contrary, it absolutely belongs in the same category as 'cocaptains.' also we heard twenty one guns by green day, a song i love! i also knew the song immediately before it, but not the name. luckily my girlfriend could tell me it was enjoy the silence by depeche mode.

before we get to the end of the episode, let's discuss: will i ever care about jeremy even a little bit? signs point to no. like vicki, he is not a character, just a problem for elena to solve. (more on jeremy in the next episode.)

also, fashion: of the two thousand nine variety. stefan is wearing a boring ass blue shirt because he's a boring ass blue shirt kind of guy. it's less flattering than the leather jacket, but it's also more him. why is elena's hair always straighter than a piece of paper? even several hours after she must have done her hair. also why does she wear that horrible leather jacket? it's just so bad!

also, where was bonnie?

now, the last scene: elena breaks up with stefan. then she goes inside and sinks to the floor, sobbing. he stands outside the door, looking constipated sad. sad music that is entirely too loud plays over the sobbing. it somewhat undercuts the mood. i predict they will get back together in ~three episodes. the end.

Cowboy Bebop: just finished rewatching this one, I wanted my dad to watch it. im a big anime fan, this one is high up on my list of favourites, its a classic! I even recommend it to non-anime fans because the gorgeous animation, compelling characters and story, and unique world building are just soooooooo good

Mob Psycho 100: hey. hey wanna watch something truly fucking bizarre and unique. wanna watch something that feels like going through therapy. want to cry your eyes out to the most unexpected anime dude of all time. boy do I have a show for you. MP100 makes me unreasonably emotional and I think everyone should watch it

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood: my favourite anime of all time nothing else comes even close. I could write an essay on why FMAB should be required viewing. I wish everyone could experience watching it as a kid and going back to it as an adult and having your entire perspective and understanding shift because suddenly youre older than the main characters and shit is so much more horrifying than when you were the same age/younger

Gargoyles: what im currently watching. also a big cartoon fan. Gargoyles is such a wonderful product of the mid-90s and I adore it. I grew up on 80s and 90s cartoon so everything from the lore to the character designs is very nostalgic to me. I need to watch the last season still but I keep putting it off cause I know the quality dips

Avatar the Last Airbender: next show im picking for my dad and I to watch. I unironically consider it to be one of the best stories ever written, with some fantastic characters and what continues to be one of my favourite redemption arcs of all time

Batman the Animated Series: best Batman. no question. I do not accept criticism. I did watch Justice League + Justice League Unlimited with my dad recently and I quite enjoyed those, but nowhere near as much as I enjoyed BtAS. Kevin Conroy I miss you every day nobody understood Bruce Wayne like you did

Doctor Who: both Classic and New Who. we have a free streaming service with a Classic Who channel, and we've had the DVDs for New Who playing lately. my favourite show of all time! meant the world to me as a teenager and got me through a lot. I have a tattoo of 11's sonic and bowtie <3

Smallville: my dad did a rewatch of this recently and I was around for most of it. and listen, ok, Smallville is a cringe fest a lot of the time. its an early 2000s CW show. but its ironically still my favourite depiction of Clark Kent and Lex Luthor, and honestly probably my favourite Lois Lane

Star Trek: various Trek shows. TOS is currently playing a lot in the house, which I have seen all of and adore, but im also a huge TNG fan even though i. havent finished it. haha. Ive also seen most of Voyager and quite enjoyed it. at some point ill get to DS9 probably

The X-Files: another one I havent rewatched in years but think about often. X-Files truly had it all. not a day goes by that I dont think about Jose Chung's from Outer Space. this was the first show to make me physically grind my teeth and scream into a pillow over a slowburn

I have more but these are what I can remember off the top of my head and what I would rewatch! im big into shows and movies so I watch a lottttttt. shoutout to some other shows ive loved like Lucifer, the Mandalorian, Kenobi, Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel the Series, Schitt's Creek, The Owl House, Violet Evergarden, and others im sure im forgetting

The way Marisha and Taliesin recoiled at the idea of Keyleth and Percy being in a sexual relationship was amazing.

And the solid belief of both Taliesen and Marisha that neither Kiki and Percy would ever touch each other in a sexual, except if Vex was involved.

But also, I love Marisha brought up the chilliness between Percy and Kiki! I love that it’s a little because they’re both being formal, playing good cop and bad cop, AND there might have been frictions between Percy and Kiki.

Taliesin is still of the idea that Percy can still be a little too bloody minded and that despite being best friends, Keyleth and Percy still have some arguments.

They are both leaders of their own respective places and sometimes what Whitestone prioritizes can be against what Zephra needs.

Also Percy being the Bruce Wayne from Batman Beyond. Amazing.

I also love Marisha clocked that Ashton was way too quiet when Laudna returned. Both Marisha and Tal are excited to have another one on one with each other.

And honestly, I look forward to both of Laudna’s interactions with Imogen and Ashton equally!

But also Taliesin’s knowing: “fRieNd???” when Marisha called Imogen Laudna’s friend.

You know he wanted to poke on that more.

But gah, everything’s reset back to zero for Laudna. She has a lot to work with to regain the certainty she lost about herself.

The good thing is this go around, Laudna is no longer alone to do it. She’s no longer like Tom Hanks in Castaway making imaginary friends.

She has real people willing to help her.

I am so EXCITED for everything.

So, I've read some more Boom Buffy and Angel comic stuff and some thoughts:

So, Andrew and Lorne are going to be paired together in the new Angel comics, huh? Didn't see that one coming at all, but I guess it makes a weird sort of sense, maybe, if you can get over the age difference.

I liked that we had a subplot with Cordy/Groo, and have the knowledge that Cordy really loved him (I feel like it does something for her character in the story thus far). And that Groo died and became this Sadness Demon, and then both Lorne and Cordy then needed to reach out to his soul, so to speak, in order to put him to rest and to stop his terrorizing people. I just sort of wish that that they had had Groo return to his normal appearance for a hot second, while he was embracing Cordy, before he went away?

The pairing for this comic series is definitely Cangel. I was kind of thinking it would be, but it's nice to know for sure now.

Oh, dang. Angelus and Spike from the end of the first Angel comic series (that got canceled) are now in this new one. Multiverse stuff, ahoy! But I'm also confused because I could have sworn that that Angelus and Spike was actually an Angel and Spike when they showed up at the end of the first Angel comic series and that they were good, but apparently not.

I actually really like this Angel series, for the most part. It actually feels like AtS? And it seems to understand that show and its characters much better than the first comic book series that attempted it did? The only issue I have with it, is I feel like we dove into the middle of a story rather than the beginning of one, with very little context for what happened to get us here, but they give us more and more information and context clues as it goes on. But it's kind of a strange way to tell a tale.

Onto more stuff from the Buffy 25th anniversary comic (I talked about some things from it last night).

Aww! I really loved the Tara and Willow comic. It was so sweet!

The Xander comic, about him coming across a demon while he was on his road trip between season three and season four, was also fun.

And holy chocolate starfish, Batman. Willow's a Slayer in an alternate universe?! (First there are two alternate universes where she has daughters that are Slayers and now there's an alternate universe where she herself is a Slayer instead of Buffy. LOL.) It sounds like that's going to be carried over into "The Vampire Slayer" volume 1. I had no idea! That's what that new story is about?! Man, there's so much crazy multiverse stuff going on with the Buffyverse right now with these comics. And first Fred becomes a Slayer in a new story, and now Willow has.

I feel like, as a whole, the Boom comics are probably planning some huge, crazy, multi-verse thing (even bigger than what they did with the Silas thing in the first Buffy comic series, and maybe even bigger than what they're now doing with the new Angel one), and I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it.

Anyway, there was no Angel, Anya, Dawn, Cordelia, Oz, or Riley stuff in the anniversary comic, and I'm confused, because I thought the advertisement for it made it seem like there was going to be. Is there going to be a volume two for the anniversary stuff? Maybe? The site I was on said "anniversary volume 1", so perhaps that means there will be a volume two?

okay so I’ve reached Love Dares You (Season 10 Vol. 3). this post will probably be long but I swear it has a point.

I’m on part 2 of that arc, and Buffy kisses Spike, right? good for her 👍

Spike is like “okay but why are you only into me now that we’re just friends and both fine with that? you always want what you can’t have, that’s why” and one of his examples of Buffy always wanting what she can’t have, is, and I quote:

“not long before [having sex with Angel]— a girl. when when clearly you’re not gay.”

we’re continuing the “holy biphobia, Batman” pattern of the comics two seasons later for some reason?? and the character who says this is, and I cannot emphasize this enough, CANONICALLY BISEXUAL. like… Spike, what?

I’m really sick of the Buffy comic biphobia honestly. thought we were done with that after Wolves at the Gate & Satsu never really being brought up again, but nope!! gotta have William “Angel and I were never intimate. well, except that one time…” Pratt continue the pattern :)

i love listening to the mcelroy podcasts that seem to be like, more tangential to the big ones that everyone seems to focus on, and knowing jack shit about those like, no i dont know mbmbam or taz, im here to listen to sawbones and shmanners and go from there

Why did you choose your URL: I’m a diehard Foo Fighters fan. When I came back to Tumblr after a 4yr hiatus, Foo’s album Concrete and Gold had just come out, and the first single was “The Sky Is A Neighborhood” with the verse:

What inspired you to become a writer: I love telling stories, both verbally and written. What’s kept me motivated is connecting with people through shared experiences, making people laugh, and making life-long friends as a result of those connections.

How long have you been writing: I’ve been writing since I was 8- or 9-years-old!

What do you do when you are not writing i.e. Job/Hobbies etc? I sell mortgages for a living, laugh and enjoy life with my husband, hike with my dogs, talk smack with my friends and family. I recently hosted a group of fandom friends here in the Rocky Mountains in a big house, where we did all of the above at one point or another, and it was such a joy.

How long have you been in the SPN Fandom? It feels like I’ve been here forever. I was reading Dean/Faith Lehane fic back in 2008 and I’ve been laughing at memes on Tumblr since as long as I’ve been on Tumblr (this is my fourth blog), but I didn’t start actively watching the show until 2015 (-ish?). I truly joined SPN fandom when I started writing SPN fic in the spring of 2018, so a little over 3yrs.

Are you in any other fandoms and do you write for them? Yes! I was active in The X-Files fandom for years via forums, chat rooms, and geocites (it was the 90s and early aughts, after all lol), but never wrote for it; Buffy and Angel in the same manner as well as LiveJournal and wrote a little; I was active in Twilight fandom for a few years and wrote fic there, once sitting on a Twific panel at SDCC; I’ve been peripherally active in several of Norman Reedus’ fandoms and written for him and his roles; and currently, I’m active in SPN, The Boys, anything Jensen does, Ted Lasso (I have fic ideas), MCU and other Marvel media, Star Wars and all things associated (especially Din Djarin’s tiny green bebe Grogu), Lucifer, anything Keanu Reeves does, and super fucking excited for my boy Pattinson in The Batman.

Do you do any writing outside of fanfiction? If so, tell us about it? I am working on a sort of fictionalized memoir based on my family and my relationships throughout my life. My sister and I have a lot of stories to tell, so we’ve been piecing together a concept for the past couple of years!

Have you ever read a book that made an impact on your life? Which one and why?: Several. I will say, however, that neither Postcards from the Edge nor Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher ever leave my bedside.

Carrie had such a gift with words and expression. She struggled with mental illness, loss, and addiction; she was a soul sister.

Favorite genre of fanfic (smut, angst, fluff, crack, rpf, etc): I’ll read just about any genre, but I seem to gravitate toward explicit content, both to read and write.

Favorite piece of your own writing: This is Sophie’s Choice, so I’ll just go with something easy, fun, and sexy -- Plus One (for which I am currently working on a sequel!)

Most underrated fic you have written: Cactus - Dean Winchester x Meg Masters x Castiel

Idk if it’s underrated, but I don’t think a lot of people have seen it, and I don’t write Destiel very often!

Summary: AU wherein Jessica Jones is super-powered by gov’t experiments to create elite soldiers, the Winchesters are military officers in humanity’s War Against Evil, and they have all gone AWOL from their assigned roles. Dean and Jess embark in a relationship that ends abruptly and explosively until Dean calls her for help on a very personal case.

Hmm, Idk about mentor, but I probably wouldn’t be writing fic and I certainly wouldn’t be sharing it without having @icemankazansky @mskathywriteswords and @cracksinthewalls in my life who have each supported and encouraged me through the years in ways that have been absolutely essential to my confidence and competence.

Do you have any aspirations involving your writing? Some day, I want to be able to tell My Story, if I can ever figure out what that is. lolllll

How many work-in-progress stories do you have: Oh, lord, a dozen? Maybe more.

What are you currently working on? The final installment for a 3-part FWB to lovers Dean x female reader AU, some Soldier Boy fuckery, and I’m trying to work up the gumption to get back to my Sam x female reader AU series. I also have a ton of AWESOME prompts from tumblr friends and from Bingos and Challenges that are just waiting for me to not be such a disaster.

“Pond Diving” - All About The Writing

What/who has had the biggest influence on your writing? Style-wise -- songwriters like Jim Morrison, Stevie Nicks, Sarah McLachlan, Dave Grohl, Trent Reznor, and Josh Homme; content-wise -- the feelings and experiences of my life like love, loss, heartbreak, lust, and trauma.

Best writing advice you've been given: Just get the words down; you can edit it later!

Biggest obstacle you’ve faced in your writing: When I jump the gun and think I know where I’m headed but then hit a roadblock and have gotten too far ahead to figure out how to back up!

What aspects of writing do you find difficult when you write fanfiction? Series. I have shit patience so I post too soon sometimes and the next thing I know I’ve hit a wall and the damn thing is stalled.

Is there anything you want to write but are afraid to (and why)? There are things I want to write but haven’t figured out yet, but I’m not really afraid of writing anything.

What inspires/motivates you to write? Human connection, reader feedback, my friends.

How do you deal with self doubt? Go back and re-read things I’ve written that I remember loving and the feedback from readers that touched my heart. I talk to my friends, too.

How do you deal with writer's block? Walk it off, make graphics, ask for insight, read something fresh and different.

Do you plan/outline your story before you start? I try to and I want to get better at this, especially for series’, but I don’t do it enough!

Do you have any weird writing habits? Idk how weird it is per se, but my usual habits include making playlists and graphics and talking out my ass about anything and everything related to the concepts or themes. I’m all about the vibes and aesthetics.

Have you ever received hateful comments on your fic and how do you deal with it? Not really. I had a woman several years ago harass me for being “irresponsible” with the main characters because they had sex without contraception and it was a one-weekend stand, but I just listened to and talked it out with her.

Conversely: what’s been some of your favorite feedback on your fanfic? Most recently I received an incredibly in depth and thoughtful observation on one of my darker and more personal fics that was so spot on that it made me cry. But I can’t not mention my long-time beta here since she is my beta because of her consistently detailed and thoughtful feedback for more than 10 years. She’s been with me ever since.

If you could give one piece of advice to a new and/or struggling writer, what would it be? Surround yourself with people you trust and respect and who feel the same about you so that you are able to be vulnerable, try new things and fail, and grow.
