Imagine the TV show Snowflake Mountain, but instead of having a chance to win $50,000, your parents PAY the show $50,000 to take you to the wilderness. You’re also a minor, you can’t leave or quit whenever, and you’re treated as if you have no rights. Oh, and instead of being told you’re going to a luxury resort, you’re kidnapped in the middle of the night with no information about what’s going on. This is a real thing that exists.

'Hell Camp: Teen Nightmare' Documentary Review
One man pledged to reshape every parent's worst teen nightmare. Enter Steve Cartisano's 'wilderness therapy camps'—a rising sensation that spiraled into chaos.
⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 3 out of 5. “Matthew would have been in juvenile detention or dead if we had not continued to try to do something,” a mother says during her interview in ‘Hell Camp: Teen Nightmare.’ It’s a Netflix documentary that traces the origins, rise, and fall of the “Challenger Foundation,” a wilderness program founded by Steve Cartisano, which promised parents to transform their rebellious,…

Accidentally Finding Family (Bucky Barnes X Teen!Fem!Reader) *PLATONIC, PARENTAL
Characters: Bucky Barnes X Teen!Fem!Reader
Universe: Marvel, Avengers
Warnings: HYDRA, mention of kidnapping, mention of torture, mention of death of family, mention of amputation
Request: Hi can I request a teen reader where she is kind of like Bucky and is a hydra agent that is from the 40s and the team finds her in a base in cryofreeze and Steve and Bucky help her learn to adjust to the future and maybe Bucky helps her deal with nightmares? Or maybe she also has a metal arm and he helps her become less insecure about it idk. Also she ends up seeing Steve and Bucky as parental figures with cute family bonding? Sorry if that’s all over the place!
Tumblr media
“Do you have any goals you have in mind for the next year or so? Next five years?” The question, targeted at Bucky, was being asked by his therapist. A few months ago, Bucky wasn’t sure what he would have answered with. A few months ago, Bucky was still filled with grief of a life lost, a life tainted with torture, his memories torn and ripped to shreds with only little fragments he could make out. But Bucky had done a hell of a lot of healing since rejoining his best friend. With therapy, Steve and Wanda’s help, those shreds of his past were being sewn back together, he’d come to accept that while his past is something he’d never fully recover from, he was still in possession of a young body, ready to try to live the life he actually wanted to live before HYDRA. A life with his new friends, and his one old one. He was ready to look into the future.
He sat back, relaxing into the settee, thinking to himself, before he let his thoughts leave his mouth. “A family.” He started. He looked over at his therapist, who smiled, nodding and notioning him to elaborate. “I loved looking after my little sister before the war. I loved looking out for Steve when he was still a punk… I think it’s always been a part of me to want to look after and care for people. Biological or adopted… the idea of having a child, someone to look after, someone to care for, be there for… to be needed by someone… I’d like that.”
“That’s definitely a doable goal I think. I think you’re finally in a place where you’d be able to be a caregiver. If you want to be sure, there are volunteering positions to help people at events- young children, camps for teenagers, so on, so forth. There’s also courses to give people more skills and knowledge on raising children that I can enrol you in?” She suggested. Bucky agreed. Not long after all of that, the session ended, and Bucky began his walk back to base to see if anyone had heard from the rest of the team yet. Almost all of the Avengers- except Bruce- had gone out on a mission. Originally he had been meant to go himself, but when the team found out that he had a session booked the same day and he might not make it, they removed him from it, knowing that his healing is far more important than another gun on their already overpowered team.
About halfway through the walk, was when his phone in his pocket buzzed repeatedly. He felt it easily, and he pulled the phone out, seeing Steve’s name on the front, and he answered it, pressing the phone to his ear. “Hey Steve, I’m on my way back now, are you already back?” He asked Steve, continuing his walk.
“Bucky I need to ask you a serious question and I need you to answer me to the best of your ability.” Steve’s serious tone made Bucky freeze on the side of the street. His eyes darted around the busy streets, finding a corner that was silent and hidden in shadows, and dashing over to it, before answering Steve.
“Alright. Ask away.” Bucky answered.
“Do you know of any other Winter Soldiers?” Steve asked, and immediately Bucky’s heart thudded.
“N-No. Wait, did you find more?” Bucky asked.
“We don’t know… she’s a kid, Buck.” Steve answered. Bucky wanted to be sick, his mind already racing on what exactly they had found. A girl, a young girl, a child, according to Steve. And from whatever information and evidence they had found, it was enough to point them back to the Winter Soldier program and him. Bucky squeezed his eyes shut.
“Is she alive?”
“Yeah. Yeah she’s alive, we’re trying to treat her for a few injuries, but we’re having issues… James I think… she’d really benefit with you being here.” He told his best friend. That seemed odd to Bucky. He was a mythical monster to the other weapons of HYDRA, used to scare them into obeying, and he had no doubt that stories of him, even after he had escaped, would have been used to bring fear, especially to children. Still, he trusted Steve and his judgement.
“Alright. I’ll be there soon.” Bucky answered shortly, hanging up, and his once leisurely stroll back to base, turned into a long sprint marathon.
He arrived back in less than 20 minutes, finding Natasha already waiting for him, her motioning for him to follow her. “How did you find her?” He asked her.
“They realised we were attacking them and raised the alarm, and seemingly let her loose with some of their other agents to try and slow us down. That didn’t happen though.” Natasha explained, power walking through the base.
“What do you mean it didn’t happen?” Bucky asked.
“She turned on them. She killed several of the guards and scientists herself and we found her in the process of trying to kill the head researcher. He’s getting medical care- it’s 50/50 whether he’ll live or not, not that I really care. After we stopped her, she surrendered to us, but she’s not talking and won’t let anyone touch her. We really don’t want to restrain her Buck, since that will undoubtedly make her worse, but I realised she was bleeding from her leg and we think she’s been shot but we can’t treat her.” Natasha explained, stopping at a door, and finally turning to him.
“How can I help with this? If anything, she’s going to have heard about me and become terrified.” He questioned, her features softening into a sad smile.
“Can you take your jacket off and your glove? So she can see it?” She asked. Bucky’s eyes darted down to his arm, flexing his robotic fingers, before looking up at Natasha, unsure and confused. “We’ll introduce you, just be as soft and kind as possible with her, okay? Trust me.” She asked. Bucky sighed, and with some hesitance, he removed his glove, shoving it into his jacket pocket, before pulling his jacket off, leaving him with just his short sleeve shirt, his arm on full display. Bucky nodded to her, and she opened the door, stepping in and aside to let him in.
“Come on kiddo, I promise it’ll be over before you know it.” Bucky walked into the scene of Tony trying to talk to you, offering a small bag of fruity snacks, though you kept your head down and totally ignored his presence beside you. Bruce was on the other side of you, looking lost on what he can do without making anything worse. Steve was leant against the nearby wall, spotting Bucky and Nat first, and he stood up straight. Bucky glanced at him, before properly looking at you, and when he did, he understood.
You were sitting on the medical bed, legs stretched out, your head low, and your arms hugged against your body. Your arms were what Bucky hyper fixated on. They were metal, both of them, all the way up to the shoulders. You had tucked your arms to the best of your ability under the thin blanket that already had a growing blood stain where one of your legs were. Bucky wasn’t sure what had happened to you that meant you had to have both your arms amputated and replaced by robotic ones, or even if there was a reason or if they just did that, but that didn’t matter right now. You were clearly uncomfortable with them being seeing, and your hatred for being touched was something that Bucky empathised with.
“Thanks for coming so quickly.” Steve spoke up, making Tony and Bruce turn as well, and after a moment, Bucky watched as your eyes also looked up to see who was there, and met his. He was convinced he’d see you flinch, be terrified, and he would make this whole situation worse, but then your eyes left his, and fell onto his arm, and he watched you relax. You actually relaxed in his presence. That immediately made Bucky relax as well as he slowly stepped closer. Tony moved out of his way so he could be by your side.
“English?” Bucky clarified and you nodded at him. “Alright. I’m James, but my friends call me Bucky. I know better than anyone how scary this all is, and how you probably really don’t want anyone prodding or poking at you anymore.” He spoke softly, keeping eye contact with you. He caught in the corner of his eye that you raised one arm from under the sheets, hesitantly reaching for him, specifically his metal arm. He reached out as well, carefully taking your metal arm in his, and your eyes stared at his arm, as the metal sheets slid and moved to adjust, similar to your own, before you looked back at him.
“They hurt you too?” You asked quietly. Bucky swallowed hard, knowing who ‘they’ were, and he nodded.
“Lost it originally from falling out of a train, but they kidnapped me and did this… my friends have helped me adjust, and they want to help you too.” He explained to you.
“They…” You hesitated, looking down at your hand holding his, before continuing. “They took mine. I don’t know why. They just did.” You explained to him, and Bucky nodded along, listening to you while also clenching his jaw, trying not to cry. Trying not to squeeze your hand on accident because of his anger.
“They were wrong for doing that, they were pure evil, and I promise you, you’re safe now, and they can’t hurt you anymore, I promise.” He smiled reassuringly. “As soon as we tend to that bullet wound, we’ll get you settled in, you can start school, be a normal teenager, or as normal as you can be, how does that sound?” He asked, and after a lot of hesitation, you nodded, and with Bucky holding your hand, you allowed Bruce to tend to your wound.
You didn’t talk to anyone for the first week, other than Bucky, but slowly started talking to the others as time passed. They got you situated in one of the bedrooms on base, but after FRIDAY reported you kept hiding under the bed or locking yourself on purpose in the bathroom and sleeping on the cold tile floor, Bucky made the suggestion to move you into a smaller space. He didn’t have to go into detail when explaining you weren’t used to sleeping on a nice warm bed in a giant room, and how it probably felt alien and wrong to sleep there. Tony didn’t have any rooms that were smaller that could function as a bedroom, and it was Steve who suggested you move into an apartment with one of them, that someone clearly being Bucky. Bucky, like showing up to see you in the first place, wasn’t sure about that idea- worried he’d have a relapse with his nightmares and scare you, but he trusted Steve. Tony paid for an upgraded apartment- a two bedroom in brooklyn, still a small walk away from Steve if he was needed, and Bucky moved all his stuff in before they moved you in.
“This is the place.” Bucky told you, opening the door to the apartment, and you cautiously stepped inside, looking around. Bucky didn’t have a lot of things, so other than a bookshelf crammed with books, an old radio, the bulky television and some photos before the war on one wall and another wall of photos from after escaping HYDRA. James wasn’t sure how you’d react to all this, so he watched you diligently. He walked around, leaning on a wall, just watching you. He saw your eyes look around, before you spotted his old radio- one that was close replica to the ones before the war- and you seemed to relax, before walking over to it, gingerly touching it, before turning it on, tuning it a little, seemingly disappointed at the radio station, before looking around, and spotting the pre-war photographs, and walked over, looking at them, and smiling. “You like them?” Bucky asked, walking over slowly.
“They remind me of before the war.” You commented, before seeming to think and turning to him quickly. “Are you from before the war too?” You asked him. Bucky’s eyebrows pinched together.
“Are you? Y/N, what year did they take you?” He demanded.
“1940… 1945? I think? The war was still on…” You explained to him, looking back at the photos, spotting him in his uniform. “You were a sergeant?”
“Y/N.” Bucky stepped closely, gently grabbing your arm and turning you to face him. “You were kidnapped by HYDRA before the war? You were frozen?” He asked. You nodded. Bucky hated that. He hated that there was yet another thing you shared with him. Metal arms, HYDRA, lives before the war, being weapons, and thrust into a new world. He’d long accepted that it’s just his life now, but that it happened to you? A kid? He hated it. “Y/N… What do you remember about your life before the war?” He asked.
You talked for hours. Sitting down on the couch, you just talked about all you remembered, bits and pieces, sometimes certain memories popping up from talking and you’d interrupt yourself just to talk about them. You told him about your parents, your dad being in the army, your mom working in a factory where they made ammunition and ballistics, where unfortunately an accident happened with fire and an explosion, and your mother was killed, leaving you alone for a period of time with your dad other seas and unable to return, and no other family to care for you, before you were sent to go live with a foster family until after the war. That family were actually HYDRA. You didn’t know what happened to your dad, if he survived the war, and if he did, if he looked for you or if he was told you had died and he moved on, maybe had a new family. Maybe you had a step mother, half siblings, maybe you were an aunt now… but you didn’t know. Bucky took the time to text your dad’s name and rank in the war to Natasha and ask her to look into him, and she responded an hour later with an obituary, and a date of death and cause. Killed in action. Bucky told you the news softly, and it was then you stopped talking. You sat there for a period of time, just processing what he had said, and Bucky remained sat there, waiting for you.
“...I’m alone, aren’t I?” You finally spoke up. “I’ve lost everything.”
“Not necessarily.” Bucky pointed out. “If your dad was in the military, then there’s probably photographs of him. If any photos were taken of you and your family before the war, I know for a fact that Natasha and Tony can find them, and we can get them printed and framed for you, so you can have something of theirs… and you have me.” He told you. You turned to look at him.
“Really?”
“Of course. As long as you need me, I’m there. I’ve been through exactly the same thing as you, I know exactly how you’re feeling and I want you to be happy and to have as close to a normal life as possible. Since you live with me, that makes me your guardian. If you want to go to school, I’ll go to all your parent-teacher meetings and help with your homework. If you want to do after school activities, I’ll go to all your games and shows and awards. If you want to talk about the 1930’s and 40’s, let’s talk about it, if you want to talk about what happened with HYDRA, let’s talk about it or we can try therapy if you want. Whatever you want to do with your life, I’ll support you no matter what. I’m here for you, no matter what, and I’m not going anywhere.” He told you. You didn’t respond at first, and when you did, you didn’t respond with words. Instead, you crawled across the couch to be closer to him, wrapping your arms around him, and resting your head on his shoulder, and Bucky hugged you back.
“I’d like that. Thank you.” He heard you speak. He held you as the sun went down, and only after realizing you had fallen asleep and he was gonna have to carry you to bed, that he realized something. He’d done it. He’d reached his goal that he had set with his therapist just over a month ago. It was totally unconventional, nothing he could have predicted, but he’d gotten his family. He’d found the child he wanted, the person he wanted to care and be there for, to watch grow and thrive and to help them with that. He’d found you.
Hope you like it! If you have any questions, please send them in!

A Complete Kingdom by komodobits [Explicit, 85k words]
The sea; it swallows me. It comes up to my knees and it swallows me. The boys owe Jody a few dozen favours, and so when her niece goes missing near an old fishing village on the coast of Maine, Dean, Sam, and a newly human Castiel agree to take the case on. They settle into an old abandoned lighthouse-keepers' cottage, and slowly the tide comes in. (post-s8)
Between Love and Agony by Duckyboos [Explicit, 53k words]
Dean Winchester is in love. Like, bonafide heart eyes and deep sighs, hung-the-moon love. There's just one problem: the lucky guy is his husband's identical twin, Castiel. The two of them have been having a kinky affair for years, burrowing under each other’s skin and setting up camp. Which is why, after Castiel goes missing, Dean’s about ready to tear the world apart looking for him. When Castiel eventually returns to him, he’s been through literal hell, managing to drag himself out, bloody and raw, for Dean. Together, they discover a way to make Castiel whole again — though the price will be gruesome... and there will certainly be hell to pay.
Camp by fullvoid [Explicit, 9k words]
It’s 1985 and to say that Dean is relieved when his summer job at the local camp comes to an end would be an egregious understatement. There are about a million different ways he would have rather spent his summer than by being the maladjusted, weird guy that all his coworkers avoid. Nevertheless, in a poor effort to fit in, Dean decides to attend the annual celebration that his fellow counselors organize at the end of every camp season. It isn’t supposed to be anything special, simply a standard party with shitty vodka, late-night skinny dipping, and make-your-ears-bleed soft rock. As it turns out, the hockey-mask-adorned, machete-wielding killer who crashes it has other plans—and no one is prepared for the horrors the night will bring.
et florum magica: (And the Magic of Flowers) by wiccanstiel [Explicit, 52k words]
There’s a large, leafless tree and a road, a hand on a gnarled cane, a stoutly man in a black suit, his face scratched out. When Castiel Novak moves to the small town of Fox Hollow, he’s looking for a fresh start. Only his past seems to be–quite literally–haunting him, and even through his best efforts of settling into his new life, there’s a darkness in the shadows that he can’t seem to shake. And after meeting an otherworldly being named Dean during what was supposed to be a simple walk through the forest, he’s left with more questions than answers. But like it’s residents, Fox Hollow has some well-kept secrets, and things quickly turn to life or death when one of those secrets finally steps from the shadows and into the light.
empty places by dothraki_shieldmaiden [Mature, 71k words]
There’s something outside the house. Something is moving outside the house, moving inside the house. Maybe moving inside him. Something is outside the house, and it wants in. After tragedy derails his life, Castiel Novak needs to escape. He flees to Lawrence, Kansas, where he answers Dean Winchester’s ad for a roommate. There, he tries to mend the shattered pieces of his life. But as he starts to become closer with Dean, Castiel finds that escape isn’t so easy. The past doesn’t want to be left behind, and there’s something inside the house. Something hungry. And it won’t be appeased until it has him.
Good Bones by emmbrancsxx0 [Mature, 39k words]
An apple pie, white picket fence American Nightmare. Dean and Cas, married and semi-retired from hunting, move into their first house together in a sleepy, secluded town. After a few run ins with the ghost that haunts the place, they must come face-to-face with the house's grisly past.
the inexhaustible silence of houses by Askance (doomcountry) [Teen and Up, 31k words]
Almost two years after the world doesn't end, Castiel falls from grace—and loses his voice in the process. It is the impetus for confession and change; before long, he is settling into a loving relationship with Dean, the Winchesters are tired, and hunting for a place to land has taken precedence to hunting anything else. Dean and Castiel fall in love with the strange little house on the end of Swallowtail Drive, and for a little while life is as it should be—sweet, affectionate, and beginning afresh. But more and more Castiel sees and hears things in the house that beg the question of whether or not a place itself can be alive. The walls and rooms seem to shift and grow and breathe, and one night, Dean comes home from a hunt changed in a way that Castiel cannot explain. In the months that follow, their domestic bliss takes turns for the dark and sour, and the confusion of their circumstances will ultimately test everything Castiel knows about the man he loves, and everything he believes to be true.
Tunnel by deansmultitudes [Explicit, 13k words]
An injury during a hasty job makes Dean, Sam and Cas split up in the underground tunnels. Confused and trapped in a maze of walls that seem to shift at the will of something evil, Dean's frantically searching for his loved ones.
White Noise by saltyfeathers [Mature, 30k words]
in an unnamed, perpetually rainy city on the east coast, something haunts dean and cas’ apartment. they’d like to pretend they don’t know what’s living in the space between them, but feigned ignorance can only keep them above water for so long. something happened nine months ago. something they don’t talk about. but the things people don’t talk about often find ways to speak for themselves, whether dean and cas are ready to pay their dues or not. the rain is an unforgiving entity, and as it continues to pervade the city; as it seeps into their already cold bones, they can feel the ocean rising around them, leaving them choking not on just what happened nine months ago, but what they’ve come to mean to each other since then.

Post Apocalypse AU in which WWX and LWJ try to find their families.
“After I flunked out of school, Aunt Yu sent me to one of these ‘troubled teen’ camps.”
Lan Zhan’s expression tightened, echoing the same displeasure of his fifteen-year-old self. Wei Wuxian laughed. “Don’t look like that, it was pretty great actually, focused on getting kids proper help. I figured some shit out and so did the educators. You should’ve seen Aunt Yu’s face when the educators had a whole list of praise and diagnosis when it was time for the first parent-teacher talk.”
Grinning, Wei Wuxian buried his face in a-Yuan’s chubby stomach, making the baby giggle. “That’s right, Xian-gege came with exemplary problem solving and team work skills, and a healthy dose of ADHD and untreated PTSD.”
Not that he’d wanted to hear that back then. Wei Wuxian had been incredibly homesick and angry at himself for fucking up badly enough that he was sent away, but in retrospect, the break had been needed or he might have had the belated breakdown when he was off age and with access to alcohol. Yeah, he could definitely picture himself going down that road of self-medication.
“Anyway, they had all these outdoor activities and one relict of that is a yearly camping trip. Who would’ve guessed learning how to set up a tent with Wen Chao would pay off in the apocalypse, huh?”
When he looked up again, Lan Zhan was looking at him with a thoughtful expression, like he was trying to figure something out. The last week traveling with him east hadn’t been as terrible as expected. Having a second pair of hands to help with a-Yuan was godsend, and beyond that, Wei Wuxian still didn’t do well when left to his own devises. Who knows what messes he would’ve gotten himself into if not for Lan Zhan’s steadfast presence and his disgustingly immaculate clothes. Cities in ruins and Lan Zhan’s shirt was still white. It should be an insult of some kind.
“I’m thankful for Wei Ying’s expertise,” Lan Zhan said and stirred their dinner some more. He’d probably never eaten canned food before this nightmare week from hell and Wei Ying yet had to cease finding amusement in Lan Zhan’s petty evaluation of their meals’ nutritional value.
Tomorrow, they’d hit the borders of Yunmeng. It was for the best of Wei Ying slept through the night to guide them tomorrow, but watching Lan Zhan attempt normalcy around their campfire dinner, he figured it wouldn’t hurt to stay up a little longer.

Summary: "When Micah blinked his bleary eyes open, he expected to see the pronghorn-leather table cover he’d been resting his whiskey-addled head on for a few minutes. Instead, he was confused to find himself not at their camp in Clemens Point, but stretched out on the cold, rocky ground, somewhere on a dark mountainside.
'What the hell?' he muttered, scrubbing a hand over his eyes. He remembered snippets of his conversation with Javier from earlier that night, raucous laughter and mumbling something about being 'drunk as a lord' while that creep Morgan nursed a beer and watched the pair of them in silence. He remembered pouring himself another drink, the pleasant warmth of the alcohol in his chest, and laying his head on his arms, just for a second.
After that, though, he didn’t remember anything, especially nothing that made any of this make sense."

Fic: Unrequited Love and Fanciful Wishes (Part of The Full Deck Series)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fandom: The Quarry
Pairing: Travis Hackett/Laura Kearney
Rating: Teen
Summary: Another moment in the 80s.
Warning(s): None believe it or not.
Notes: This is for Tay! (@spookyscaryscully ) They wanted some jealous!Laura and while I definitely have plans to write that in the present in The Full Deck verse I've been watching 80s movies to cheer myself up (school has been a bit of a nightmare) and it's put me in the mood for some more young!Travis shenanigans. Hence this!
Also, I absolutely hate the name of this...but couldn't think of anything else! If I do, I'll change it later when I put it on AO3.
"I made this for you!" Becky Willingham holds out the neatly cross-stitched handkerchief for Travis to take.
His eyes go wide behind his glasses as he takes it from her, "For me? Really?"
Becky nods shyly, the curly ponytail on the very top of her head visibly shaking with the movement, "I made it in Angela's crafts class. I thought you might like it."
"Oh, wow! Well, thanks!" he returns as he inspects the craftsmanship. Laura is sitting nearby, halfway through her lunch break. She chews on her apple slices and watches the exchange in amusement. She chose to eat outside today, the weather cool and crisp from a midafternoon rain.
While it's been an adjustment (what with time traveling into the past and all) Laura has to admit it's been somewhat refreshing being here. The camp is almost exactly how she pictured it, but also leagues different.
Mostly due to the fashion choices and Becky is wearing what has to be the quintessential outfit for a fourteen year of the 80s. The lilac purple, bright pink, and neon blue pastel shirt print she's wearing is beyond outrageous and her acid washed jean shorts have just that hint of fringe that she probably feels speaks to her maturing.
The over-the-top makeup approach she has signals the same - bright pink lipstick and smudged pink eyeshadow clear attempts at trying to look 'older', but only really highlighting how very young she is.
Very young and very obviously crushing on Travis.
Travis who, naturally, is completely oblivious to the young girl's romantic overtures. He holds the handkerchief up and offers a grin, "I can use this if you and Natalie fall again when we do another round of tug of war."
Becky giggles like this is the best and funniest thing she has ever heard in her life. Travis just continues, "Can you believe how muddy you two got? Not Bruce's best idea - having you guys do Field Day events after that big rain."
"I know! And it rained today too! It's just so crazy!" Becky flutters her eyelashes at him, clearly happy he's talking to her, and Laura can't help but roll her eyes.
Poor baby, Becky doesn't recognize that it's simply Travis being kind. But then she remembers being that age - nothing like unrequited love and fanciful wishes. Laura remembers thinking that Max would have to go through something like this.
Long before the drive to the Quarry and the two months of hell and nightmare that followed, Laura had had a lot of ideas of how things might go at Hackett's Quarry Summer Camp. One of those had been how, no doubt, a group of little girls would flock all over Max, stars in their eyes.
Instead, she's seeing it with Travis Hackett of all people. Laura would say she doesn't understand it, but well...
She pointedly picks up another apple slice and chews it, breathing in the fresh air. The scent of pine and freshly wet earth fills her lungs even as she hears Becky let out another peal of giggles. Laura senses movement nearby and sees Travis approaching her, the handkerchief in hand.
"Hey! How're you doing?" Travis asks kindly as he sits across from her at the wooden picnic table, one finger going to push up the bridge of his glasses while he does so.
...those stupid, stupid glasses...
Laura just shrugs and sees that Becky has found a group of her friends. Laura recognizes one of them as Natalie, but not the other. They're grouped together and whispering and laughing, pointing in her and Travis's direction. Or, much more likely, just Travis's direction and she scoffs, shaking her head as she mutters, "You should be careful about stringing her along."
Travis's eyebrows draw together in confusion, "Huh?"
She juts her chin out in Becky's direction and Travis turns to see her there. Becky, Natalie, and the other girl go bug-eyed before hightailing it, nervous chitters trailing in their wake.
"Wait-? Who-?" Travis turns back to Laura, then back to where Becky was, then back to Laura again, as if he expected to see someone else over there, "Becky?!"
Laura simply smirks and grabs her capri sun, sipping it like tea. Travis's mouth drops open, "I'm not-!? She's a camper! A-!? A kid!"
"Yeah, well - she's a kid with a HUGE crush on you."
Travis regards Laura as if she's lost her mind and Laura can't help but find that hilarious, considering not more than twenty-four hours ago she told him about how she'd been held hostage by a cop. A cop who was him, but that was neither here nor there at this moment, "Travis, are you telling me you didn't notice the hearts floating over her head? Especially after she gave you that?"
Laura gestures to the handkerchief and Travis gently sets it down, eyeing it now with distaste, "I-? I thought she was just being nice! She's told me I'm her favorite counselor!"
"Mmm, bet you you're also her favorite boy, period."
"She-?" Travis's skin takes on a red pallor that Laura refuses to acknowledge as cute any more than she refuses to acknowledge his startled embarrassment as cute, "She's been coming here since she was ten! I-? I've known her since she was like-?"
He holds his hand up so it's not very far from the ground, "This high! She's just-? She's-?"
"A kid?" Laura repeats and Travis scowls at her, crossing his arms as he huffs, "You're wrong."
"Oh, I am not." Laura argues airily, "But don't be so worried about it. Girls have crushes. Especially at that age. There's nothing to feel bad about."
Travis shifts about uncomfortably, "But girls don't have crushes on me! Especially not campers! Bruce and David, sure - but me? I'm just-? I'm-?"
He plays with his hands and shifts some more, "I'm nobody."
Jaw tightening, Laura gives him a cool eyed glare, "You really have to stop talking like that."
Travis's head shoots up and his eyes meet hers, even as Laura finds her mouth running off without her truly thinking about what's coming out of it, "I wouldn't consider someone who does what you do a nobody. I wouldn't consider someone who I help a nobody. I wouldn't consider someone who kept me lock-!"
The last cuts off awkwardly, because Laura almost - almost, almost, almost - said 'locked up' and boy would that have been a shock. Because Travis hasn't locked her up. Not yet. Not this Travis and this Travis looks very confused and very troubled as he repeats, "'Lock- what?'"
"L-locked lips with." Laura falls back on because, yeah, okay - she has kissed him. More than once. And liked it. Goddamn her life. Goddamn it a step further, when he blushes and ducks his head and smiles that big, stupid, crooked smile of his.
His teeth are slightly unaligned in this time. Did he get braces later? Invisalign? Either one was probably used, considering when she met him, he had a fully straight set. Not this endearing, slightly oddball collection that's on full display when he grins, "I kept you locked lips with?"
Another shrug, "Something like that."
She goes for her capri sun again, needing the distraction, the little vacuum bag sucking in hard as she drags on the slim straw. The taste of orange floods her mouth even as Travis picks the handkerchief back up and looks at it, "Still think you're wrong. Still think she was just being nice."
"Well, wait a couple of years and you can marry her if you want." Laura offers, unsure of where that comment came from, only for him to look up and let out a bark of laughter, "Why, Ms. Kearney! Are you jealous?"
Laura now lets out her own laugh, "Please! I'm not-!"
"Because while I know green is your favorite color, I never took you as the jealous type."
"I'm not jealous." Laura intones and she completely ignores the fact that she's crushing the now empty capri sun pack in her hand. Travis, however, looks delighted, "I mean, you really don't have any reason to be. Like I said, Becky is just a kid. And besides, I'm sure you know there's only one person that I'd ever consider marry-!"
Travis stops and now it's clear he's said more than he planned to. Bashfulness takes him quickly and he clears his throat, clutching the handkerchief in one hand. Laura herself, is also taken with nerves. Marrying? That's a big word. A big idea. A huge commitment.
It's the type of commitment one shouldn't take lightly or embark on impulsively and the Travis she knew would never do such a thing. Or, then again, maybe he would. The Travis she knew probably didn't plan on imprisoning her and Max for two months.
That had, no doubt, been an impulsive decision.
But marriage...
It's only because you brought it up, Laura's mind calmly reminds her, he doesn't mean anything by it.
Laura's sure he doesn't.
He has to.
Because anything else is unthinkable...
Clearing her own throat, Laura reaches across the table between them and pats the top of the hand Travis is clutching the handkerchief in, "I-? I'm sure you'll find that person someday."
Travis just looks at her and the heat in his eyes - the pure want and need...
Laura needs to make a getaway. Fast. She rises up abruptly, gathering her lunch tray and trash as she does her best to keep her voice light, "M-Maybe I'll see you later tonight? At the bonfire?"
...he's still looking at her in that way.
That way that, while he didn't mean to say those things, now that he has he's just-? The idea is there. The idea of marrying that one person. That one person that, Laura is terrified, is her. She's terrified. But she's not exactly sure if it's because she's terrified at the very thought or because she's terrified at the very thought that she isn't terrified...that she'd actually be okay with-?
Travis's lips on hers, warm and soft, his tongue carefully parting the seam of her lips to come inside, to taste and caress as he whispers her name lovingly, as they share breath, as he looks at her with dark brown, nearly black eyes from behind his thick glasses...
Fuck.
The memory of one of their kisses hits her hard and she finds herself turning and running away. No, no - not running, not running - walking. She's walking away. But Laura knows the truth. Deep down inside, she knows the truth.
She's running.
Running from him in the past, running from him in the future - running from those intense eyes and handkerchiefs and jealousy, jealousy-! Jesus, fuck, did she wish it was just jealousy she felt.
Jealousy...and not the million other, more intimate things she's feeling for Travis Hackett right now.
...and maybe always.

sleep intimacy + mutual pining for the mashup meme, please!
Heck yeah, nonnie - this is a good one!
Eddie starts having nightmares almost immediately after getting dragged back from the Upside Down. He thinks they might've been earlier if sleep was something he could do while being on the run. Regardless, he's sleep weary and exhausted beyond belief. The fatigue makes it so that there's no choice but to succumb to sleep, but the dreams - the dreams yank him back to the cusp of consciousness within an hour of his eyes slipping shut.
Steve notices the bags under Eddie's eyes a couple weeks into sharing shifts at Family Video. He's been looking at Eddie a lot lately, so it's shocking to see how bad they've gotten when he walks in on what's always a busy Saturday afternoon. He waits until they're closing before he say's something. "You doing okay, Munson? You seem - off."
Steve's voice startles Eddie, yanking him back to the here and now so suddenly that he visibly jumps. There's a blush on his cheeks when he finally turns around to take Steve in. He's a second away from brushing the question off when the look in Harrington's eyes registers. It's genuine concern he sees there. Which, shouldn't be all that surprising, Steve's capacity to care for the people close to him is unconscionable - Eddie's never thing anything like it. He tries not to think about what it means pointed at him now. They've been growing close (almost too close for Eddie's heart's safety) but shared trauma does that. Looking at him now, Eddie wonders how long he's been missing the reality of Steve's attention. He sucks in a breath, then shakes his head. "I'm exhausted, man. I haven't slept more than a couple hours in a row in weeks. It's - I think I'm going a little crazy."
Steve is taken aback for a second - Eddie isn't always forthcoming and the silence was long. As the words settle in and Steve really looks, it's pretty clear that Eddie is struggling. Steve remembers a time when he couldn't sleep without his bat next to his bed. The amount of time he woke to make sure it was there is still a little embarrassing. The fact of the matter is, he gets it - realizing the world is dark and scary is life changing. Settling with that understanding is still difficult for Steve and Eddie's journey is just beginning. He recalls finally feeling better able to cope when Robin came into his life. So many times she let him crawl through her window just to share the same space for a while. "Come home with me. When I was struggling with nightmares last year, Robin and I would camp out in one of our rooms and sleep. It didn't always work, but it's nice to know someone's there. I have a pretty big bed. Comfy, too."
Eddie's tired and overcome by emotion suddenly. He's been like a zombie all day but it hits him so hard now - the fact that his mind hasn't rested. The offer Steve brings to the table is sweet and sounds so good that he doesn't hesitate to smile softly, gratefully. "You know what, that sounds good." He waits for the nervous regret to come, but it never does. A part of him always knew they'd get here - wherever the hell that actually is.
Steve doesn't make a big deal out of it - he simply nods and goes back to tilling out the register. They're quiet and move in tandem until the closing duties slowly dwindle down to none. There's an unspoken agreement to meet at Steve's, so he gets into the car and steadily drives home. The open windows allowing a light breeze in keep him alert - he feels more relaxed by the time he pulls into his driveway. He thinks the sight of Eddie's van sitting behind his plays a part, too.
Steve's place is like a mansion compared to the trailer Eddie lives in with Wayne. His eyes bug out at the sight of lamely posed family photos neatly hung on the wall. He tries not to turn into a puddle as his eyes flick across Steve throughout the years. The man is handsome and has been so his entire life - even the awkward teen years looked good on him. It's hard for Eddie to think Steve doesn't know what he's doing, but he says nothing. Instead, he leads Eddie into the kitchen, playing host like the rich boy he was raised to be. It's reluctantly cute, though Eddie waves him off and asks about the bedroom. At any other time that thought would've made him blush, now, he's just ready to snuggle into the mattress (and maybe Steve, too.)
It surprisingly isn't awkward, settling into bed with Eddie Munson. They're both in underwear, what look like matching scars on display. Steve wants to take him in, to make out all the physical things that make up Eddie - it's been a desire for a while, though he's just now starting to admit it. It takes a lot of effort not to do so when Eddie crawls into the left side of his bed. He tucks his head down and takes his usual spot towards the right side's middle. They're close, because Steve knows Eddie needs it - that maybe they both need it. Eddie stays stiff for a second before taking the clearly laid out invitation - within moments, Eddie's head is on Steve's chest, their legs tangled together.
Eddie doesn't realize he falls asleep until the bright sun is blasting him the next morning. When he blinks, the blinding pain he's been dealing with is now longer there. His limbs feel less like stone - Eddie has rested and is all the better for it. There's a warm arm wrapped around his waist; sometime in the night, both Steve and Eddie turned onto their sides, making Eddie the little spoon. Steve's hand is a solid presence on Eddie's stomach. It's apparent that Steve is still very much asleep. For a second, Eddie thinks about wiggling out of the firm hold, but a nuzzle into the back of his neck stops him. Steve's voice is sleep heavy, like thick maple syrup as he whispers - "stay." It's easy to sigh in answer - their position is rather nice. Eddie reaches down and grabs Steve's hand, gripping his fingers like he's wanted to for - longer than he cares to admit. There's no protest, so Eddie slumps down and lets sleep overtake him again.
