Idia Shroud is Autistic-Coded; Here's Why
Hello! Happy Autism Awareness Month! In celebration, I will be posting a wholeeee load of autistic traits I have found in Idia. This is coming from a person who, while undiagnosed, is most likely autistic.
If you have any additions, please tell me in whatever way is most convenient (comments, reblogs, asks, dms... whatever.) This list will likely be evergrowing as more events, vignettes, and story content are added to TWST. Some of these may be a stretch but ya know.
This is organized by trait for your (and my) convenience. Begins under cut!
*Warning, I am not a medical professional. I'm just autistic and for a while got fixated on autism itself. Which is why I call myself autistic... I've been researching this shit for many years lol
We'll be starting with DSM-5 requirements in order to be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Then, we will move to common experiences (things that most autistic people experience, but aren't a tell-tale sign that you're autistic and aren't a requirement for a professional diagnosis.) Finally will be disorders that Idia shows symptoms of that tend to co-occur with ASD.
Numbered list will explain the traits Idia demonstrates. At the end, the diagnostic criteria specified will be stated in parentheses and quotation marks.
A) Persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts...
Generally, Idia is seen to have trouble communicating with his peers if not behind a screen or while interacting with something he enjoys (such as talking about anime or playing a board game.) ("Deficits in social-emotional reciprocity, ranging, for example, from abnormal social approach and failure of normal back-and-forth conversation...")
Idia's way of expressing emotion is difficult to pin down. He will go from speaking very quietly (and stuttering usually) in a near-monotone voice with an "emotionless" expression to talking loudly, quickly, and with a HUGE smile on his face. We don't quite get to see how he responds to nonverbal communication or how he portrays it himself (probably because it doesn't come up, or because of live2d restrictions), but we do learn that he hates eye contact I believe in his Birthday Boy vignette when he claims to hate having to laugh and make eye contact with normies (masking right there buddy go to a doctor) ("Deficits in nonverbal communicative behaviors used for social interaction, ranging, for example, from poorly integrated verbal and nonverbal communication; to abnormalities in eye contact and body language or deficits in understanding and use of gestures; to a total lack of facial expressions and nonverbal communication.")
This is where it could kinda get stretchy, partially because I for the life of me am having trouble understanding A.3. BUT. Idia is often very blunt, to the point where he's straight up rude, especially in situations where that kind of attitude is... not very helpful. See the Phantom Bride event when he chastises the boys coming to rescue him for looking disheveled after fighting for their lives, which makes them not want to rescue him despite his life being on the line (I think Ace even goes off on him for this lol.) Furthermore, the only people amongst his peers that he will indulge are Azul, Ortho and (unknowingly, and only online) Lilia. The rest he has zero interest in, whether he despises or is scared of them. They're all normies. Finally, it's shown that throughout his life he has had very little if not zero friends in real life aside from Ortho. To be fair, I don't think there were many kids his age back home lol. ("Deficits in developing, maintaining, and understanding relationships, ranging, for example, from difficulties adjusting behavior to suit various social contexts; to difficulties in sharing imaginative play or in making friends; to absence of interest in peers.")
Part one of an autism diagnosis down! Idia shows persistent deficits in each social and communication area specified through A.1-A.3. In order to be diagnosed, you also much show two out of four of restricted, repetitive behaviors specified through B.1-B.4 below.
B) Restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities, as manifested by at least two of the following, currently or by history...
Due to live2d restrictions, we never exactly get to see Idia physically stim. (Well, I'd argue we get to see Floyd physically stim with his constant swaying back and forth, but not like they can flap their hands or anything.) This one's a stretch, but his form of verbal stimming could be the little sound effects he makes at times, mostly in book 6 actually. Specifically, his "DA DA DA DAAAAA" after explaining the plot of Star Rogue to the overblot victims in Styx as well as his "BOOM BADA BOOM BOOM BOOM! HAH!" after finishing Ortho in the flashback sequence. Other than that, the only other ideas I'd have for repetitive movements or sounds are headcanons. I don't know if I'd count this one. ("Stereotyped or repetitive motor movements, use of objects, or speech")
This is another one I don't think we ever see in-game. I don't know... the things I could consider part of this criteria would better fit as sensory things~! Again I'm an Idia connoisseur but if you know anything about this please tell me I will update this one. ("Insistence on sameness, inflexible adherence to routines, or ritualized patterns of verbal or nonverbal behavior")
Idia is shown to have MULTIPLE very strong interests. Whether this might be a special interest or hyperfixation... it's hard to tell, but I can sure guess. The longest-running interest we see him show to have, originating from way back when Ortho was still alive, is Star Rogue. Because he seems to know nearly everything about the game and has also maintained the interest for a long time, I would consider this a special interest (along with engineering and technomancy, which he's said to have excelled in since a young age.) Idia does talk about certain specific animes and other games he enjoys, but not to the degree of Star Rogue (yes that's my basis here), so I don't know if that's a special interest or just a hyperfixation. It's the same situation with idol groups, particularly Premo (or Fates on the Edge). This isn't even it. That man is fandom trash and I love him. ("Highly restricted, fixated interests that are abnormal in intensity or focus")
Idia is shown on multiple occasions to have sensory issues. To the point where, similarly to his strong interests, I don't know if I know half of it. During the Phantom Bride event and his Union Birthday vignette, Idia complains about his neck feeling cold due to his hair being brushed behind his hair (PB) or up in a ponytail (UB). He also complains about his Phantom Bride suit AND his Birthday Boy suit being "stuffy", but that one could also be a stretch. In the Harveston event, Idia says that he only eats his apples canned or peeled, which I'd chop up to sensory issues once again. (Although, that one could also be under B.2) Idia constantly has his headphones around his neck to listen to music. A bit of a stretch, but they're also noise canceling, so there's a chance he uses them to avoid overstimulation. Finally, Idia states that he doesn't like fish because it's smelly and slimy. I get that Idia raw fish is texture hell. As far as I know, there's no point in which Idia under-reacts to sensory input (e.g. pain) or becomes very invested in it (like staring at a moving wheel.) ("Hyper- or hyporeactivity to sensory input or unusual interest in sensory aspects of the environment")
And there we have it. Autism diagnosis. Idia demonstrates persistent deficits in all three sections under A and at least two sections under B. BUT WAIT! We still have C-E!
C) Symptoms must be present in the early developmental period (but may not become fully manifest until social demands exceed limited capacities, or may be masked by learned strategies in later life).
Really, the only point in which we see Idia demonstrate autistic traits in early life is his interest in Star Rogue. This is probably just because of how the storyline is. We actually don't know very much about Idia OR Ortho when they were young. However I would argue that Idia does mask because of the multiple times where he immediately just gets upset prior to talking to someone (something he probably hides during conversation). And ofc that one time he complains about talking to normies in his Birthday Boy vignette (? it could've be a voice line.)
D) Symptoms cause clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of current functioning.
Idia's symptoms in fact significantly impair his life. I think that alone is obvious enough. We see it every time that man's on screen.
E) These disturbances are not better explained by intellectual disability (intellectual developmental disorder) or global developmental delay...
Symptoms that Idia experiences could very well be explained by other mental disorders such as social anxiety, but these are not intellectual disabilities. Explaining away ASD for Idia falls into a trap many autistic people do in real life with medical professionals who just can't believe that their patient is autistic for one reason or another; these people will sometimes receive a dozen different diagnoses that all could be better explained by autism spectrum disorder. That's not very cool. Therefore, this does not apply.
Specifically, Idia would likely have ASD co-morbid with social anxiety and most likely clinical depression. (I HAVE done some minor research into Idia and bipolar disorder, but that's a situation for another day and far more of a stretch than ASD ever could be.)
DSM-5 requirements cleared! Next stage, common experiences.
This is another thing I will need help for because it's not like there's scholarly articles on "things a lot of autistic people experience but it's definitely not something a doctor will ask you about." So please share. This is the list that will never stop growing.
Abnormal posture (Crewel gets onto Idia for not standing up straight, he often is portrayed sitting in chairs with his knees to his chest, and he's seen doing "dino hands" or "T-Rex arms" in battle mode on occasion.)
Target of bullying (Many autistic people, especially autistic girls, tend to be bullied more often than their allistic peers. While not always to his face, people do tend to talk bad about Idia behind his back, Ortho even has a 'Don't Talk Shit About My Brother' beam for the bullies lol.)
More tone + social stuff... (Things that the DSM-5 thing didn't quite fit. In book 6 he jokes about torturing the overblots and when everyone's like 'dude wtf' he's like 'what it was a joke dumbass.' Could be written off as just an odd sense of humor, or it could be difficulty reading the room lol.)
A love for lists and organization. (When Idia speaks autonomously in your guest room, he mentions having things exactly where you need them and how it's 'convenience'. He also seems to have a knack for practicality. It's not too much of a stretch to say it ties into a need for organization.) (Idia has every NRC student organized into multiple tier lists on the R-SSR rating system like the in-game cards based on certain factors, such as most social.)
Easily startled. (Self-explanatory. HieEh.)
Preference for connection through interests. (Another reason why he is disconnected from those around him, aside from the whole trauma thing, and calls most other people "normies." They don't "get" his interests, so he has no interest in being friends with them.)
Difficulty with processing time. (Remember when he had apparently been working on Ortho's uhhh starsender gear? For like 12 hours straight?"
Relaxes through interacting with interests (In the vignette I referenced in 7, when Ortho tells him to take a break, he decides to play Star Rogue. Ortho meant to sleep.)
Putting off needs until one can not longer ignore them. (Idia often gets so engrossed in what he's doing that he forgets to do basic self-care tasks like eating.)
Infodumping. (Shown a lot in book 6. Namely with his like 2-3 minute long rant about Star Rogue. The rest, such as him rambling on and on about Styx, seems to be used so the audience knows what the HELL is happening. He does go on rants outside of this book tho.)
Gifted kid (Yeah he was called a "boy genius.")
This is not a complete list by any means, I could go on for DAYS.
On the topic of co-occurring disorders, the two most obvious disorders Idia clearly is dealing with are social anxiety and depression. Both of which are often co-morbid with ASD.
While social anxiety and ASD have a lot of overlap, they aren't the same thing, but often autism can contribute to the development of social anxiety through masking and the general difficulties in socializing that come with autism. Allistic people tend to react negatively in response to an autistic person doing something that the allistic person deems unorthodox. This reaction can often cause a lot of internal turmoil for the autistic person due to rejection-sensitive dysphoria. Furthermore, masking requires a high level of awareness of one's environment as well as the judgment of others. Thus, social anxiety can often develop.
While I don't know how exactly autism might affect depression as it does social anxiety, I do know that depression is VERY common in autistic adults. 5 in 10 adults with ASD have depression, and living in a world built for those who are neurotypical is hard for anyone who is neurodivergent, which definitely does not help. And it sure as hell has to make it worse for Idia of all people.

@hey-haven mentions in a reblog Idia's low empathy towards other people. I recommend heading over to their blog to check out what they said because they do make an amazing point and it's probably far better than anything I could explain (lol). But to paraphrase, they cite specifically Idia making fun of his classmates who just fought for their lives to rescue him during the Phantom Bride event and his attitude towards the overblot victims and their reactions to being essentially kidnapped during book 6, in which he seems to not really "get" why they're so upset. Generally, when it surrounds emotions that aren't his own, he's pretty oblivious. They also bring up his little "whee-hee-hee" laugh! It brings up an observation I've seen of autistic people (seemingly) laughing at "random" or generally inappropriate times because we tend to express laughter in a voiced manner (like laughing out loud because you find something genuinely funny) rather than an unvoiced manner (like the little exhale you do at a funny photo on your phone). Idia laughs a lot, I don't know if it's realistic to connect it to autism or if it's better explained by him just being a weird guy (which I love about him don't get me wrong lol.) Although the study about this was with specifically autistic and non-autistic children though... it's food for thought I guess.

I'm autisming so hard right now so here's Fuzzy lore since I don't remember ever posting it anywhere (btw I've been struggling to word things correctly for the past few days so sorry if this doesn't make sense or the wording is weird)
Fuzzy was found by Stretchy. They were stuck in his chute causing a lot of blockage before he finally managed to get them out. He ends up freaking out because like. An entire person was in there for who even knows how long lol
He rushes them over to Tiny so he can fix them. Fuzzy was impossible to fix since they're a more modern model of robot, but Tiny and Stretchy managed to do it. Fuzzy doesn't wake up immediately, but when they do wake up, they're confused and scared
Fuzzy is freaking out because it seemed like one minute they were sitting on the same scrap heap the others were abandoned on and then the next they're in a place they don't even recognize. This was also Fuzzy's first time seeing other robots so they had no idea what Tiny and Stretchy even were
After giving them time to calm down, Tiny and Stretchy explain what happened. Tiny asks for their name but Fuzzy's like "I don't think I have one of those :(" they also have literally no memory of their personality or anything like that
Tiny decides to give them a name. They're named Fuzzy because of their fuzzy outer covering and their fur. Tiny tells Stretchy to give them a tour of their world, and he's like "yeah okay" but he's like. Really not sure about this since he still needs to get back to work
After giving them a tour and (attempting) to introduce them to the others, which was impossible because Fuzzy kept hiding behind him the entire time, he tells them to wait for Tiny while he goes back to the junkyard. That doesn't work out though because now Fuzzy has imprinted on him like a duckling lol
Stretchy is annoyed at this and reluctantly decides he's just going to have to bring them with him to the junkyard. Fuzzy ends up following him around there too and trying to copy him. This is when Fuzzy starts learning that they're a robot
The next few days, Fuzzy still stays close to Stretchy, who is slowly starting to enjoy their company, but they also start venturing out on their own to learn how to be a robot
Eventually, Fuzzy is finally less nervous and starts to become the way they are now. Them and Stretchy also start to bond with each other. He finally decides to ask why Fuzzy was sticking so close to him and why they chose to be around him out of everyone else. Fuzzy says "because you're my hero!!! :]" and Stretchy is confused
Fuzzy explains that if it wasn't for him taking them to Tiny that they probably would've been destroyed beyond repair, and that while he could've easily just left them, he actually cared enough to get them fixed and then Stretchy's like "OH OKAY 🥺🥺🥺🥺"
Fuzzy begins learning about what they're good at besides helping Stretchy around the junkyard. Fuzzy learns that they're very good at singing, comedy and fashion design. Tiny, who was planning a welcome party for Fuzzy, hears Fuzzy singing and sees some of the outfits they made, and asks them if they'd like to perform for everyone
Fuzzy agrees to do it, but is VERY nervous about it. Stretchy and Tiny assure them that it'll be alright, and that everyone will love them
At the party, Fuzzy performs for everyone, which was a HUGE success. After this they're shown to their new home. It was built next to the junkyard so they could easily go over and help Stretchy. They were also gifted a bunch of different fabrics and supplies to make outfits
Basically now Fuzzy and Stretchy are best friends. The two of them are rarely seen apart, and even when they are apart the other is probably somewhere close by

Got bored and made headcanons of the funny candy guy
You know how cats will leave mice for people they like? That’s him, but with... Candy, obviously.
He only gives people candy that he thinks corresponds to their personality. Everyone has multiple buckets of candy.
Jawbreakers are basically the candy he will use if he can’t read out their personality. Baseball = jawbreakers (also relates to his line)
Candyman is basically like a cat. (Yes, I AM projecting, fight me.) he likes to sit very high up, and cat toys are a great way to keep him from wandering off.
When he goes through the wall, he leaves a taffy-like substance behind. For the love of god, do NOT eat it.
It’s basically like teleporting, but it only works short distances.
He could damn well leave the facility; he just chose not to.
Steals Doombox’s jackets and makes a nest out of them. Nobody actually knows why.
Surprisingly enough, caffeine doesn’t affect him. (Yes, more projecting)
He’s very stretchy in general, got that rubberhose vibe to him.
He can change the consistency and even smell of his body. If he’s angry (rare, so god help you if you manage that) he can and will make himself incredibly tall/fill the room with the smell of rot.
Everyone was shocked when he cursed the first time in front of them. The boy can curse? That is so unholy-
He owns (and has worn) multiple dresses.
Mega autism vibes from him. No context.
As I mentioned, he trans. You will get your shit rocked if you misgender/deadname him.
They haven't gone on a “date” yet, but Doombox and Candyman are with each other (oooooohhh haha)
He likes rain. The sound, the feel, everything about it. Playing rain sounds calms him down when he’s overstimulated :)
He has mostly vocal stims, but two of his physical stims are pacing and his lil tippy taps. He’s a good tapdancer :)
Important addition: Candyman will immediately come to you if he hears the pspspsps. It’s a great way to get him back when you lose him, however he does kind of overshoot and will most likely accidentally run you over (he’ll apologize a ton though).

ember and his health; an informative post
( aka - the fates hit Ember with a baseball bat called “illness” until he stopped moving )
cw for discussions of; physical and mental illnesses, minor ableism, chronic pain
While I’ve made a lot of mentions to Ember’s health, I promised myself I’d make an actual informative guide to direct people to for questions. As a quick piece of information about me: a lot of Ember’s relationship to his disabilities is based off of how I cope with it. I’m noting this because I don’t want to seem like I’m coming from a place of just “I wanted to cause this guy problems” and instead “I have never seen a disabled character who wasn’t babied and who wasn’t excused for actions because of their disabilities”.
I don’t have all of these things, namely I’ve never been diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) or Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), so if there are any inaccuracies I apologize! I have a lot of overlapping symptoms which are the ones I tend to focus on. Also, I do not have a complete comprehension of the healthcare system in TWST, so I am making assumptions and kind of using the fact that Ember comes from a traditional and slightly isolated home as reasoning for any differences in canon vs what I am writing.
With that, lets get into it
- BODY -
Ember has something called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, specifically the classical subtype. This affects the connective tissues in his body, making his joints hyper-mobile and unstable. It also causes his skin to be stretchy, something that isn’t mentioned as much, and causes him to scar a lot easier and worse than others. It’s genetic, he inherited it from his dad, and is something that will worsen throughout his life.
Ways in which this effects him includes:
- The use of mobility devices, namely his cane, crutches, and wheelchair.
- He almost always has all of his body covered, with the exception of occasionally wearing a turtleneck he cut the sleeves off of.
- He easily dislocates, sublexes, and sprains his joints- especially his legs and shoulders due to use.
A common comorbidity with EDS is POTS. This is what causes him to faint when he stands too fast. Essentially, his heart doesn’t get enough blood returned when he moves too fast and it will beat faster, usually requiring him to lay back down for a bit.
- MIND -
Ember’s mental health struggles, however, are not diagnosed. He isn’t fully aware of them himself. He has depression and is autistic.
For his depression, this is what causes him to not fully care for himself, come off as snippy, tending to isolate himself during lows. Until recently, he would successfully isolate himself, only interacting with others while working. I’ve made mentions in the past to this vaguely- namely in how his room is in a state of disrepair, he hasn’t been taking care of himself, and is quick to fight others. To him. this is simply an unfortunate part to being the next Oracle.
For his autism, he mainly is autistic because I myself am and I find it incredibly difficult to not write autistic characters. He’s more literal, causing his prophecies to be incredibly upfront and without much room for interpretation, doesn’t understand social cues, and has a special interest in death and magic.
- WHY DOES THIS MATTER ? -
If Ember was able bodied and neurotypical, he wouldn’t be himself. He is like this less because there’s evidence in the lore that he is twisted from and more because, as I mentioned, I wanted a character like him to exist. It matters because Ember, at his core, is someone who is struggling who will never admit it. Especially since being the Oracle already hurts his body.

Submas Headcanons
Because I've started accumulating them
Emmet:
Has autism and ADHD
Always arrives early to events to be sure he's not late
Time perception varies between eerily precise or completely off the mark depending on circumstances
Has memorised all of the trains' schedule and relies on that to tell time
His "train of thought" is very fast, he tends to jump from one subject to another with no apparent link (but there always is a link)
He had to deal with people misunderstanding him so much that he prefers to state what he means in simple short sentences and answers to questions he himself asked
He's very attached to his name and HATES it when people mistakes him for Ingo
Has taken the habit of always introducing himself
"I am Emmet" became a vocal stim so he can be heard muttering it for no apparent reason
Goes non verbal from time to time
If he can't stim or move his body or talk or— he will start dissociating. That's when his time perception gets completely skewed
Being bored/restless is a Terrible experience for him
He has started many projects out of boredom or stress
He's stretchy. So stretchy you wouldn't believe how tall he seems to grow when he stretches
Tends to be stiff even when relaxing, that's how he's comfortable: stretched and taking space
Likes to borrow things from Ingo even if he already has the same thing
Has befriended all of Ingo's pokémon and they basically have shared custody over them
Is often the one to initiate hugs and other physical contacts
Preferred stim is flapping hands and vocal stim (verrrry)
Likes feeling pressure on him so his coat is heavier than it looks. At night he often sleeps with his pokémon on top of him
A bit skinnier than Ingo from being more hyperactive
He's sensitive to a lot of texture and wears gloves to avoid the unpleasant ones
A bit germaphobic and the gloves also help with that. Wants to keep the subway as clean as possible. Is the first one to start wearing a mask when flu season arrives
Wearing all white also means he can see immediately if something stained his clothes
Garbodor was Ingo's pokémon at first, but he enjoys having it with him since it eats garbage and such
His favorite pokémon are bug types, he has two durants (that's canon btw) and takes care of many joltiks (also canon, his galvantula knows a move that she can only learn through breeding)
Sometimes borrows Chandelure because of his flame body ability
Likes getting shocked lightly by his electric pokémon (but not in a self harm way)
Can't cook anything but the basic stuff. Main reason is that he gets distracted while cooking and doesn't have the habit to set timers like Ingo does
Can drive a car! Prefers to be the one to drive in any vehicles as it gives him control
Doesn't like flights because he has yet to learn to drive a plane
He is very insistent on car safety because he's a very *dynamic* driver
Ingo:
Has autism and ADD
Has trouble with social cue and etiquette: always speaks very politely to be sure he won't be called rude
Has trouble with volume control
Has learned about voice tone and use it to express himself a lot. He used to have a more monotone voice as a child
No object permanence: seems to be very neatly organised as a coping mechanism, but displace one thing and he will forget it existed
This also happens with pokémon when Emmet borrows them
Has let Emmet borrow all of his pokémon, but never borrows any from him
Sometimes babysit eggs for Emmet with Chandelure
Has incredibly good spatial awareness: knows the layout of the city and can always finds his way back to anywhere
Much more of a noodle than Emmet, but surprisingly flexible
A total hugger, but never initiate contact. It's hard for him to let go
Tends to curl up when relaxing. Literally can't sit correctly in a chair unless he's at work.
Has many coping mechanism that "helps" him mask while at work
Needs a lot of alarms to remind him he needs to eat, stop working, sleep, take a break, etc. or he gets so absorbed he forget to take care of himself
Emmet is usually the one to prompt him to do things
Needs to be told in advance of any change of plans or he won't have time to accomodate his routine and mentally prepare
Unplanned events are a big stress for him
Preferred stim is chewing (mostly wears gloves to stop his nail biting habit) and playing with his hands, twisting his fingers. I don't know how to describe it but it's a thing I do. Also does some vocal stims
Being under stimulated is a bad experience and so he likes having someone talk to him or listen to music/radio/podcast when doing stuff
Will also read things aloud or talk to himself
Is more prone to dissociating than Emmet, unless he's busy. Keeps himself busy to avoid it because he doesn't enjoy that experience
Keeping himself busy can mean "be deeply lost in thought" so it can be hard to tell if he's dissociating or thinking about ways to improve the subway
Likes building model trains. He has a whole wall to expose all the one he built
Likes feeling pressure on him so his coat is heavier than it looks. At night he often sleeps with a weighted blanket
Has a very poor sense of smell and taste and prefers things with more flavour as a result, especially spicy
Can cook really well! It just tends to be spicy
Can't drive a car at all and tends to get nervous unless Emmet is driving
Not a fan of flights either

All superheroes are neurodivergent, and I refuse to believe otherwises. In fact, I will list some of the Marvel heroes I headcanon as ND
Scott Lang: ADHD. He jumps from fixation to fixation, his reoccurring hyperfixation being magic, he speaks out of turn and usually off topic to whatever is currently going on, has poor time management and is impulsive. He also had a strong moral code and will do what he feels is best, ie stealing from the rich. Luis and him get along so well because they’re brains are wired similarly, I’m just saying 👀
Tony Stark: ADHD/AUSTISM. This one is just as obvious as Scott. His special interest is science, he has poor social skills outside of what he’s adopted from others (masking in the form of sunglasses and a celebrity attitude), he doesn’t get social cues, is abrupt and interrupts others when hyperfocused and is know to be very impulsive. He has emotional outbursts when overwhelmed/overstimulated (though he deals with understimulation a lot too IMO), not good with empathising but is shown he can sympathise with others and even show them compassion if he’s close to them. Again, strong sense of justice that fits his own definition (deciding that he should be held responsible for his mistakes in making weapons, Ultron and Sokovia, etc).
Steve Rogers: AUTISM. Strong sense of justice, emotional outbursts, stretchy fabric/layers to avoid oversensitivity 👀, special interests were art and maybe even war/fighting, hard time making friends growing up, relates to others with his own stories when comforting people because that’s the only way he knows how, when he’s not interested in a task he will just leave without justifying it (ie the science exbo) which makes him appear arrogant (and Bucky seems used to Steve just randomly wandering off, probably cause Steve’s done it all throughout their friendship).
Bucky Barnes: ADHD. Poor time management, oversharing, bad with tones (his own and others), always seems confused because he’s almost never paying attention to a situation but instead is instead three topics ahead in his own mind, his hyperfixation in the 40’s in fantasy novels and science (specially mechanics) and he regains those fixations post-HYDRA but catching up on modern day fantasy media & boat mechanics. Makes notes of everything so he doesn’t forget anything, makes impulsive decisions all the time (freeing Zemo, asking Wakanda for new wings, moving in with Sam, etc) and has a (un)healthy dose of rejection sensitivity dysphoria.
Sam Wilson: AUTISM. Sam is the ultimate masker but this man has ASD and no one can tell me otherwise. He hates changes to his routine without his consent (ie unable to get rid of the boat, jogs every morning, etc), his special interest is technical engineering (his wings & Redwing), he often jokes at inappropriate times & refuses to apologise unless he feels he was in the wrong. Strong sense of justice, emotionally shuts down when stressed, has many casual friends but very few close friends because he finds it hard to connect with people (he connects with Nat, Steve & Bucky cause they’re all ND, duh).
Natasha Romanoff: AUTISM. Growing up in the red room forced her to be an expert at masking, but whenever she doesn’t seem to be acting ‘appropriately’, she’s shown to be uncaring of social cues, burns out easily, and thrives off routine. Her special interest was probably ballet for a long time before it was ruined for her. She wears tight clothes because she doesn’t like baggy outfits that will brush against her when she’s not expecting it and keeps her hair red because it’s her one constant that makes her feel comfortable and gives her something to focus on when she’s overwhelmed.
Peter Parker: ADHD/AUTISM. Do I really need to explain this one? I feel it’s overly on the nose. Hyperactive, special interest is spiderman, hyperfixation is science and pop culture, socially awkward and talks a little too fast for everyone else to catch up with. He’s the ADHD/ASD combo that slots right in under the wing of Tony.
James Rhodes: AUTISM. Come on. Come on. I just,,, he’s best friends with Tony Stark. He’s wanted to be in the Air Force since he was a kid, he went to MIT and has a Masters in the science of Aerospace Engineering. He’s the voice of reason and always thinks of the obvious conclusions without thought to the moral implications (ie killing baby Thanos) or the emotional process of others (ie Steve crashing into the ocean instead of jumping out of the plane). He’s stubborn and rarely yields to others opinions, even if it puts him under social scrutiny. He spends months looking for Tony when most would assume he was dead (and Rhodey has been shown to be very rational and level headed in everything else) because, honestly, I think Tony is his favourite person.
Bruce Banner: AUTISM. Bad with socialising, off in his own world half the time, ahead of conversations, heavy dose of RSD, jumps to conclusions because he interrupts others, emotional outbursts, special interest in physics (though he does have six other PHDs), etc. I’m also pretty sure he had DID as a kid (Hulk was his alter).
Thor: ADHD. Impulsive, doesn’t like change, poor time management, bouts of depression & anxiety, Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria, interrupts others, seems dumber than he is due to having no filter from brain to mouth, comfort item is his hammer, personally I think he hyperfixates on Jane Foster because she’s the first human he’s really met which is why the eventual break up isn’t as painful as say Tony’s break with Pepper.
Peter Quill: ADHD. Look I could explain this one, but it’s just his whole vibe. The obsession with old school music and film, the impulsive behaviour, the way he interacts with others, he just gives the vibe.
DC BONUS
BATMAN: AUTISM. Special interest is bats, self isolates, doesn’t get along with others because he’s socially awkward, his mask is Bruce Wayne, lives by a strict moral code, blah blah blah HES OBVIOUSLY AUTISTIC (and so are all the robins send tweet)

“Spencer, there’s no need to apologize for having feelings.”

"Spencer!" Derek doesn't sound angry so much as exasperated.
Spencer can't take it, though, because this conversation is triggering thoughts he hasn't had for years and years, memories of being called too sensitive and thin-skinned at home, only to go to school and get bullied for being weak and pathetic and a crybaby.
Spencer was trained to apologize for his feelings.
"Kid? Spencer?"
He looks up to see Derek's concerned face, and he realizes he's zoned out and he's breathing too fast. He tries to bring himself back into the present but he feels like he's floating, like he's watching himself from above.
"I'm fine," he says automatically, cringing at the sound of his voice. He doesn't feel like he's even in control of what he's saying.
He needs to get away, but when he stands up he runs into his desk and then trips over his bag. He stumbles to the ground but gets up quickly and keeps walking.
It's not long before Derek catches up to him, pulling him into a conference room and sitting down next to him.
"Talk to me," he says gently.
Spencer swallows. "Before I do, can you do me a favor?"
"Sure, what do you need?"
"In the bottom drawer of my desk there's a purple zip-up bag," Spencer says. "Can you bring it to me?"
Derek leaves and returns a few minutes later with the bag. Spencer unzips it and pulls out a pair of tall socks, a pair of fingerless gloves, and a stretchy shirt.
"Whatcha got there, Pretty Boy?"
"Compression socks," Spencer says. "Compression gloves, and a compression shirt. Uh, I'm gonna put the shirt on first, so..."
Derek turns around so his back is to Spencer.
"Can I ask why all the compression wear?" he asks while Spencer changes.
"Do you know what proprioception is?"
"No..."
"It's the awareness of position and movement of the body," Spencer tells him. "It can be affected both by autism and by dissociative aspects of PTSD and can cause issues with balance, coordination, that sort of thing. I find compression clothing helps with my awareness of my body, in addition to providing necessary sensory input. You can turn around now, by the way."
Derek turns, and Spencer is dressed again with the gloves on, carefully pulling on a pink sock. The other one is blue with yellow stripes.
"Okay," Spencer says, patting the seat next to him for Derek to sit back down. "I guess I'm ready to talk now."

i got a question for the EDS people on tumblr. is feeling like your bones are always falling out a sign of eds? Im beginning to wonder if i have it because its commonly comorbid with autism, and i have most of the symptoms except for stretchy skin and i dont know if im hypermobile enough for it to be eds. Anyway, almost everytime i walk i can feel my leg bones falling in and out of each other, sometimes it gets bad and i have to snap them back in and it kind of hurts. its no big deal though, so idk if its eds because its not terribly painful, just irritating. I did however have a problem when i was younger where my knee could snap sideways sometimes, and the pain was excruciating. It’s happened only around 3 times though. The only memory i have of it was when i jumped off the back of my couch and when i landed my knee snapped and i could do nothing but sit on the floor screaming and crying until it popped back in correctly on its own. Doctors had no idea what it was, i was hesitant to let me parents take me to the doctor in the first place because i was so terrified of them triggering it by touching and moving my legs. My bones generally feel really fragile. When I stim and flap my hands i hear my wrist bones clicking and cracking a lot. Additionally, this made me curious about a condition Ive had my whole life that no one knew what it was. I finally visited a doctor for it this year and he said it was just a problem with the parasympathetic nervous system. I look that up and find problems with the autonomic nervous system happen in EDS.
Im not looking for anyone to diagnose me or anything of course, just some insight would be appreciated. What made you seek a diagnosis? How does EDS feel for you?

❤️🔥 DISABILITY RAGE ❤️🔥
Yesterday I was in disability despair but today I’m in disability rage. I have so many questions and so much anger for the systems and authority figures that are supposed to “care” for me. Like
Why did no one flag how ridiculous it was for me to constantly be getting blood tests between the ages of 6-12?
And what the fuck were they for??
Was it not strange that I started getting chronic back pain at age 8?
Also felt like there was a cap in my lungs and could never get enough air
Diagnosed asthma age 8
How vile was it to get a pill-pushing psychiatrist that invalidated my experiences of racism
Thank God I left before he could diagnose me as bipolar cuz it turns out I’m actually autistic
Diagnosed autism age 22
But back to childhood I was a super bendy bitch with back pain, but as I grew also intense joint pain, sometimes in knuckles but especially my right knee. I got screened for early onset arthritis at 20 and couldn’t make a flight of stairs with my breath intact.
Diagnosed chronically anemic age 20
But not before my useless university nurses let me go from the blood test saying my iron numbers were fine and not disclosing them to me. A “healthy” (subjective) amount of iron in an adult female is 5-250 micrograms/blood cell. I had 5. So they said I was fine. My body was not fine.
I came off birth control upon moving in with my stable, long-term partner. I have experienced excruciating ovulation pain ever since (as I did before birth control).
In the process of an endometriosis diagnosis, but I won’t speak to a doctor for probably 5 more months.
Back to the childhood thing, I also have stretchy skin, arrhythmia and used to get frequent heart stabbing pain? all put together, I think I may have hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos. Which is common with autism.
Why weren’t my parents awake to catch any of this (1. They’re not medical professionals 2. They’re busy dealing with they’re own medical racism 3. They were mentally vacant as of joining a cult when I was 3)
I’m so enraged for me. For disabled people. For Black disabled people. For Black disabled female-bodied people. I fucking can’t stand ableism in all of its iterations, the microaggressive side-eyes and disbelief to the literally-not-being-treated-like-a-human piece.

Punched xeir own face out when xey were twelve. Because xey did it to xemself, nothing changed other than xem becoming very self conscious and getting an LED mask.
Tape is the only one whose not related to xem who has seen xeir missing face. Advice: Keep the mask on.

You don't hear it that way, it sounds like they talk normally, albeit autotuned, but you just know. It can cause migraines if left unchecked whuch sucks because Autism and infodumping.
Mainly uses xeir tail to punch out objects thicker than xeir claws can handle, and faces.
If you have your face punched out by xem, you might as well be dead. Xey have full control over your body like a puppeteer and if xey aren't in the same room as you, you basically become a disco zombie.
The best way to avoid this fate? Keep xem in a good mood, don't make direct eye contact, and if you see what's under the mask without xem noticing don't say anything about it.
Has an exoskeleton about the consistency of rubber mixed with plastic bottles. Xeir back had a fuck ton of scars on it, but when it got ripped off Scissors gave xem a 'transplant'. It still hurts to touch.

The shortest LOS member that is not a dog and constantly gets teased about it.
When they do cut their hair they do it with a knife. Not to be tough or anything, it just turns into adhesive the second it's not attached to their body and it's easier to clean off a knife than a pair of scissors
Their arms are tape prosthetic at the elbow down to their hand and can be torn off. It hurts like hell, but at least their hands are disembodied.
The prosthetics naturally grow back.
Their tougue is also tape. Their mouth is just a weird tape dispenser that's constantly full

Can extend the fucking pompadour like an extra stretchy limb and grab things with it. They don't do this often but it has happened.

Got the scar on her eye from messing with her blades when she was younger and putting way it too close to her face.
How this happened is up for interpretation as both she and Jean-Pierre are robots

Calls herself Eddie Von Scissorfingers because even her sheathed hands are sharp. She has murder on the mind 24/7 and she wants you to know that.

You Should Read This If You Like: Own Voices stories about autism, living with Asperger's, disabilities, anxiety, etc.
Invisible Differences is a story about Marguerite and what it means for her to live with Asperger's syndrome and carry out her daily routine. At the beginning of the story, Marguerite hasn't yet been diagnosed with Asperger's. She only knows that she's a little different from the people around her: she religiously sticks to her routine, hates the noise and clatter of the people around her in the office, cannot follow social cues to save her life, and has a hard time in social gatherings. Marguerite's idiosyncrasies make her stand out among her colleagues and her boyfriend’s friends.
Marguerite’s relationship with her boyfriend is also somewhat different from “regular” relationships: they sleep in separate beds holding hands and he clearly doesn't respect her boundaries or understand when she’s feeling anxious or nervous about something. Their strained relationship is eventually the catalyst for Marguerite seeking help.
Invisible Differences, as per the title, is about the largely invisible disabilities and the struggles of living with it specially in a culture that refuses to acknowledge its existence. Julie Danchez and Mademoiselle Caroline expertly shows how Marguerite has a hard time understanding or following the things we take for granted. The quirky art style with its monochrome palette, uses shades of bright red, yellow, and orange to highlight people, places, and even moods; red in particular is used to emphasize Marguerite's mounting anxiety when faced with loud and disruptive sounds. I also loved how the artist draws body language to convey Marguerite's awkwardness: her stretchy smiles, her wringing hands, etc. there very minimal dialogue, the art speaking volumes.
I found this to be such a hopeful, upbeat, and yet deeply informative read about the larger issues of mental health in France, particularly when it comes to diagnosing Asperger's syndrome. For someone like me who knew next to nothing about being on the spectrum, this really opened up the door for conversation about autism. This graphic novel even includes a resources section at the back for more books you can use to educate yourself on the subject, ranging from references to memoirs, children's books, novels etc.

Representations of Autism in the MASS EFFECT universe part 1.
If you spent some time on my blog you will know that I have a neurological “disorder” or condition known as ASD or (Autistic Spectrum disorder) This a common condition that results in minor or quite substantial differences in the brains processing of stimuli, information, social ques and more... Though keep in mind that Autism does not just affect the brain! This can also extend to other things related to the human body, for me this entails having stretchy excess skin for example or exhibiting something called hypermobility joint disorder which results in me having double joints!.

Autism is featured quite heavily in the MASS EFFECT universe. In ways both intentional and unintentional. So I thought it would be fun and interesting to show you why as someone who has Asperger’s syndrome! :D
Characteristics of Autism in Characters: Mordin Solus.
Ofcourse I had to start with him! :) You will find that Mordin’s personality, behaviour and activities fall very much in line with what one would typically associated with a spectrum condition!. Now I assume in this case since he’s an alien that this was not intended, but clearly some amount of inspiration was taken. Many intellectuals, or geniuses throughout history have exhibited a form of autism or savant syndrome which is what gifted them with such remarkable talents.
Very specific interests and routines.
Mordin Solus is at home and happy in the lab. Taking a true delight in science, science communication, theatre and related arts. These interests are so strong that they dominate his life, and the things he talks about almost exclusively... This is very characteristic of autism, with what is commonly known as “hyper fixations”. These are subjects, activities or routines that dominate an individuals life to the exclusion of all else. So much so its hard to get someone with autism to not talk about those things, or not find them doing those things.
Try as you might, or try as I might to not play video games, talk about Mordin Solus or eat chocolate on an almost daily basis. It will be damn near impossible to do so! :D In some cases this may be thought of as detrimental and that can be true... But it also can result in the development of skills at a speedy pace! For me it would be drawing for example, but this can cover a whole range of abilities like science and math :).
So you can also say that I very much have quite an overriding hyper fixation with this character, a sort of mirror for what I can also see in him :D.
Socially atypical behaviour.
Mordin expresses a wide range of social behaviours that few others do in his species. These range from erratic speech patterns, movements and unconventional communicative gestures. Also Rapid topic switching during conversation, non linear creative thinking, and auditory learning. All of these things you can see in the behaviour of those on the autistic spectrum! Remember though that a common myth surrounding those with autism is that we are less social than those who are NT or “Neural typical”... We are, or can be just as social then those who are normal, we just express ourselves and communicate in fundamentally different ways! :D
Its easy for an NT to look at an hypothetical autistic individual and assume that they are not listening to them when they talk, because a common atypical social behaviour we exhibit is not always instinctually making eye contact. Which many of you take for granted as you do this without even thinking about it, its a naturally occurring behaviour in a social species. In our case it has to be a concentrated effort that requires planning and conscious thought, so much so it can be potentially draining.
Mordins behaviour can be responded to by renegade Shepard in some very harsh and demeaning ways if you so choose, and this speaks to the reality that many people with this condition face in our day to day lives. Because trying to mask our behaviours or alter them to suite the expectations of those unlike us is an incredibly mentally taxing task that requires careful thought, planning and more...
In part 2 ill talk about the character of David Archer. Who is written to be an autistic individual in the universe that you first encounter in the Overlord DLC which shows the darker side of our experiences in a campy scifi context.
