A Rating & Scathing Review of RWBY Characters:
Done by: Me (surprise!)
This is a serious review where I seriously analyze each character and rate them all seriously!!
If I hurt anyone in this, I’m sorry, it’s not you, it’s me. It’s nothing personal.
That being said, let’s get on to the ratings!
Ruby Rose:
Can I just say:
I really just love Ruby. Isn’t she awesome? Like. Man. What a lovable, strong, caring, amazing person! Had the weight of the world thrown onto her, and she didn’t care, she just kept doing what she thought was the right thing. And when she broke? It was still selfless. She thought she was doing the world a favor after all her mistakes. Then she came back because she knew she could do and had to do more for everyone. She needs a hug and all the love.
Rating:
Infinity/10
Weiss Schnee:
Weiss??? The way she opens up and goes from being all, “friendship? Who needs it.” To, “I! Love! My! Friends! Friendship is magic! I will fight tooth and nail for them! They are the most important people in the world!” And the way she became so open minded after learning from different perspectives? Gotta love her.
Rating:
Infinity/10
Blake Belladonna:
Oh my gosh and another of my favorites: Blake! She learns to let herself be loved by those around her! She learns that letting people in isn’t a weakness, but a great strength! She is a fierce protector and a whole civil rights activist taking the world by storm! She finds a way to show love now in any scenario when beforehand she didn’t because she was scared to get hurt. Gosh. Spectacular.
Rating:
Infinity/10
Yang Xiao-Long:
Don’t even get me started on Yang. Protector Supreme. The way she used to let her emotions control her to controlling her emotions??? I’m in shambles. From learning how to live for herself and not just her sister??? It’s important even though she missed rubys pain she’s only human and she’s beautiful!! The way she loves through her actions and defends through her words??? Just kill me now.
Rating:
Infinity/10
Jaune Arc:
Oh yeah and Jaune??? The character development??? Wowza. The way he’s always there for those he cares about??? Fantastic. The way he would throw everything away just to be there for his friends?? I am deceased. His fortitude and determination to keep pushing through?? Ugh.
Rating:
Infinity/10
Nora Valkyrie:
Nora??????? My Queen????? With her heart a beautiful storm that she projects to all those around her??? Her protective nature over everyone??? How she learns that she needs to love herself and know herself before she can truly dedicate herself to another???? Literally puts me 6 feet under.
Rating:
Infinity/10
Pyrrha Nikos:
Pyrrha??? Don’t think I’m leaving her out of this! Her heart was so strong with her convictions and her love for her friends that she literally did everything she thought she could to protect them. She wanted to define her destiny and save the world in the way she thought only she could. I will literally never recover.
Rating:
Infinity/10
Oscar Pine:
Oscar???????????????? My baby???? My precious little prince??? Innocent farm boy who keeps getting slapped in the face by literally everyone (seriously crwby this poor boy needs a break and a hug) literally losing his soul but wants to spend every second he has doing everything he can for remnant???? He didn’t ask for this???? And yet here he is??? I haven’t stopped crying since V5 thank you very much!
Rating:
Infinity/10
Lie Ren:
Ren????? My boy??? Who feels like he always has to be the strong one emotionally??? Who always has to mask his own emotions to take care of others???? Who literally developed a semblance, a manifestation of his SOUL that is empathy??????? Like what???? Who would literally rather be dead than without Nora?? Who tried to take up the mantle of Jaunes emotional support humanness???? Orkcmekwkqo.
Rating:
Infinity/10
I could go on for the rest of my life for these people and literally every other character.
Also, how come tumblr doesn’t have more colors available??? Truly a tragedy and quite rude if I might say! Hmph!
I really hope someone gets some giggles out of this like I did!
Let me know if anyone wants me to do another HIGHLY critical review (ahem) and rating of these characters.
Gonna go cry now bye-

the first thing. the very first thing we see salem do besides the non-diegetic bookend monologues. is tell off watts for being mean to cinder. “watts, do you find such malignance necessary?”
and it isn’t just a passing remark, salem makes a whole thing of it. “then i see no reason for your cruelty towards young cinder,” effusive praise and then she turns back to watts and says, “so, i’m curious, to what ‘failures’ are you referring?”
well, watts says, the girl with the silver eyes. even without her new power, it should have been effortless—
—and salem shuts that down hard. “it is because of the maiden’s power.” it’s not cinder’s fault. “make no mistake, cinder: you hold the key to our victory. but your newfound strength brings with it a crippling weakness, which is why you will remain by my side as we continue your treatment.”
then, after salem gives her orders, cinder asks about ruby. watts scoffs; what about her, she’s cinder’s problem, not ours. but: “tyrian? spring can wait. find the girl that did this to cinder, and bring her to me.”
and scene. that’s our first real glimpse of who salem is, and it lays the foundations for everything that develops from this point with salem and cinder.
before salem walks into the room it’s established that cinder is at the bottom of the pecking order. watts and tyrian gleefully pick on her; hazel doesn’t give a shit. and then salem enters and makes this deliberate, protracted point of not just “don’t be cruel to cinder” but she is at pains to demonstrate that cinder’s wellbeing is her first priority. salem is personally involved in treating her injuries. watts is taking over the haven operation so that cinder will have more time to heal. she pulls tyrian off the hunt for the spring maiden because cinder wants ruby dealt with, and salem again intends to deal with the matter herself.
“it’s important not to lose sight of what drives us: love. justice… reverence. but the moment you put your desires before my own, they will be lost to you. this isn’t a threat; this is simply the truth. the path to your desires is only found through me.”
but for cinder fall, spring can wait.
cinder has always been the exception to every rule. salem put what cinder wanted ahead of her own agenda. salem effectively postponed haven to do cinder a favor, without a second of hesitation. salem spent all of V4-5 focused on cinder and what cinder wanted.
her parting words before cinder leaves for haven are: “you will have the power i promised you when the time is right, but remember that it comes with a cost. if ruby rose has learned to harness her gift, you must take care to protect yours; there’s only so much i can do to aid you.”
<- “be careful.”
and then cinder is not careful. now consider this exchange:
SALEM: Emerald. I want you to tell me whose fault this was… Now. EMERALD: Ci-Cinder! We failed because of Cinder. SALEM: ……That’s right. I want you to understand that failure; I want you to understand why Cinder must be left to toil in her isolation until she redeems herself.  MERCURY: You mean… EMERALD: She’s alive!? WATTS: You’re joking. How could you know that?
ok. really think about this.
salem is the only person in the room who knows cinder is alive. everybody else takes it as a given that she died at haven. “maybe cinder survived somehow?” is not a possibility on anybody’s radar.
emerald is on the brink of collapsing in abject grief because she believes cinder is dead. and then salem grabs her shoulder and is like “listen to me very closely, it is emotionally important to me that you understand why we will not be going to cinder’s aid. she MUST be left to TOIL ALONE. BY HERSELF. until she redeems herself. do you understand?”
and the entire inner circle is like excuse me
what do you mean cinder’s alive
how do you even know that
Tumblr media
“NO FURTHER QUESTIONS.”
i just—hrgfjfk
“apropos of nothing, i am NOT sending you or cinder’s other little friend to her aid and i will NOT be altering my plans in any way to help her i am not going to lift a finger for her. until she redeems herself.”
the lady doth protest too much.
for cinder fall, spring can wait.
salem is projecting her own desire to rescue cinder from the haven mess onto emerald for the express purpose of shooting it down. watts asks how she could even know cinder survived and salem’s like >:( and changes the subject.
“it’s important not to lose sight of what drives us. love—”
she goes through her whole little spiel about not putting what they want before what she wants and then, with her back turned to all of them, she glances out the window and the mask just crumbles. her shoulders hunch. she is acutely unhappy. “and so we must… press on.”
this song and dance is not for them. it’s for her. it is half of an argument salem is having with herself.
“spring can wait; find the girl that did this to cinder, and bring her to me.” -> “but the moment you put your desires before my own, they will be lost to you.”
“you will have the power i promised you […] but remember that it comes with a cost. if ruby rose has learned to harness her gift, you must take care to protect yours; there is only so much i can do to aid you.” -> “the path to your desires is only found through me.”
✨salem✨ is the one who set the expectation that what cinder wanted took priority. salem told cinder to rely on herself first and salem second. she warned cinder repeatedly and explicitly that the power she promised to cinder would expose her to greater harm.
as far as salem knows, because watts certainly wouldn’t have painted a fair picture of why cinder made the choices she did, cinder didn’t heed that warning, fumbled haven, lost the lamp, and very nearly got herself killed in the process.
and salem wants to throw her a lifeline.
she doesn’t want to be wanting to throw cinder a lifeline but it is, obviously, a thought that crossed her mind often enough for her to feel the need to declare out loud that she is Not Going To Do It, No Matter How Much You Might Want Me To, Emerald.
“the sword under vacuo’s academy, shade—” and then hazel drops the bomb on her that ozma has the lamp and he’s taking it to atlas. watts and tyrian are rattled because oz might talk some sense into ironwood and spoil the plan. but salem?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
salem isn’t thinking tactics or strategy. she is getting run over by the freight train of discovering she feels the same way about This Situation—cinder trying to get the lamp away from ozma alone—as she feels about her daughters.
and she cannot fucking do it.
cinder must be left to toil in her isolation until she redeems herself (by recovering the lamp) -> what do you mean oz has the lamp -> never mind we’re all going to atlas right the fuck now. cinder can toil in isolation with the covert support of salem’s most formidable pair of agents while salem churns out a zillion grimm over the course of a few months ITS FINE. EVERYTHING IS FINE.
“she thinks; she wants. as if she’s done something to warrant me caring about either of those things.” i don’t care, she says, caringly.
but:
“your newfound strength brings with it a crippling weakness, which is why you will remain at my side while we continue your treatment.” -> “you will have the power i promised you when the time is right, but remember that it comes with a cost. if ruby rose has learned to harness her gift, you must take care to protect yours. there’s only so much i can do to aid you.” -> “i would like to think i’ve shown a great deal of patience during my many years walking remnant, but i do hate repeating myself. you will remain here. is that clear?”
it isn’t that she’s punishing cinder for the failure at haven.
cinder comes home from beacon maimed, salem keeps her at evernight for months and replaces the arm she lost with a grimm (<- symbolically, she gives cinder part of herself;  the arm ties them together and that goes both ways, salem knows she’s alive and cinder knows when she’s back; she makes cinder like herself). waits as long as she reasonably can before sending her to haven, with parting words that amount to be careful, i won’t be there to save you.
cinder gets clobbered at haven and barely survives, salem is at war with herself over it when hazel blindsides her with the bad news that ozma has the lamp and she panics.
salem drops everything to rush to atlas with overwhelming force and arrives to find cinder waiting for her not only in one piece but also in possession of the lamp; her eyes go fucking glossy for a second as an enormous amount of tension just melts away. and salem like? teases her? about her habit of bringing home strays. “hm! you certainly do like collecting assets,” fondly indulgent. oh you. like genuinely is is the one and only time salem has ever sounded like she’s having fun.
…then cinder reveals that she tried for the staff, too, but the polendina girl “interfered” and became the winter maiden instead. (salem isn’t stupid she knows this is cinder-speak for “a girl who could beat me without magic is the winter maiden now.”) and cinder wants to turn right around and hunt her down? NO. ABSOLUTELY NOT. YOU ARE STAYING HERE.
the hammer drops because salem is scared. she resorts to cruelty in a desperate stab at clawing herself back from the ledge of Caring About Cinder; but salem is so, so, so painfully cognizant all the time of how mortal cinder is. she sent cinder to beacon and cinder came home missing her eye and half an arm. she sent cinder to haven and cinder almost didn’t come back at all, it’s a miracle she survived. and salem brought an incomprehensible number of grimm to atlas specifically to avoid round three of feeling terrified while cinder crawls through a meat grinder for her. and now cinders like BUT I WANT TO CRAWL THROUGH THE MEAT GRINDER!
“remember that [power] comes with a cost; if ruby rose has learned to harness her gift, you must take care to protect yours. there’s only so much i can do to aid you” -> “everything is already in motion; all you need to concern yourself with is your ability to act when i tell you to.”
she doesn’t have the nerve to say it or maybe she just doesn’t know how but she is trying to pull cinder out of the line of fire. this is not your game to win (this is not your fight) and just because you’re more valuable to me than a pawn (you are not just a pawn to me) and everything is already in motion (i will take care of it this time) and all you need to concern yourself with is your ability to act when i tell you (don’t worry just let me handle it).
if she can crack down and keep cinder under control with cruelty and intimidation then she doesn’t have to confront the feelings driving her decisions, but of course she can’t because she never had control over cinder in the first place; cinder is legitimately stunned when salem shuts her down in 8.1 because Salem Does Not Treat Her Like That.
so naturally cinder goes: well fuck you i do what i want.
and almost fucking dies.
again.
they hit amity in the middle of the night. it’s dawn in vacuo during the broadcast, vacuo is six hours ahead of atlas (2.3). cinder does not wake up until dawn. she is unconscious for six hours. six. hours. in a world where aura can fully heal a thoracic impalement in about fifteen minutes.
think about how badly cinder had to have been hurt for emerald—who loves cinder and is terrified of salem—to bring cinder back to the whale after they did exactly what salem directly ordered cinder not to do. think about the level of desperation necessary for emerald of all people to weigh the risk of salem’s fury against the severity of cinder’s injuries and decide she had to bring cinder to salem.
“you chose to disobey my specific instructions, just to fail again. and… i’ve realized it’s all my fault. you’ve fought your whole life unwaveringly for what you want, and here i am holding you back, instead of lifting you up. you deserve so much more than i’ve given you.”
<- that is the sound of salem falling off the ledge.
like
as a manipulative tactic to get cinder under her thumb this is, quite plainly, not going to work, and cinder sees right through it, and salem knows that. by literally ✨rewarding✨ open defiance she accomplishes nothing except proving to cinder that when the chips are down, salem will blink first.
but.
salem is not about getting cinder under her thumb. she wants the relics and she’s also been losing her gods-damned mind for months now because every time cinder leaves her sight for an extended period of time cinder has gotten smushed like a bug and the legion of grimm did not even slightly improve the situation. and the only way salem can think of to thread the needle between having her cake and eating it too is to go REBELLION IS OKAY. LET’S TRY THE BUDDY SYSTEM.
the minute salem reconstitutes, she beelines to where cinder is. pretends not to notice cinder’s bald-faced lies. “you did well” and “our work here is done” and not interrupting and making a point to demonstrate that she listened to what cinder told her (“you said they used the staff; i assume you rid the world of their creation.”) and asking carefully non-threatening follow up questions (“what did you create?” as opposed to, like, what happened to watts).
salem isn’t trying to put cinder on a leash. she’s twisting herself into knots in search of a way to move forward with her actual agenda without getting cinder killed, and her increasing desperation to keep cinder alive is not primarily motivated by strategic calculation; it’s emotional.
her establishing character moment is salem Making a Statement to her own inner circle that cinder is more important than the plan. she says she’s going to leave cinder to ~toil in isolation~ and sticks to it for all of, like, two minutes before she finds out it would mean abandoning cinder to face ozma alone and just shatters. she is visibly relieved when cinder surprises her with the lamp and proceeds to make “you will not go hunting a girl who can definitely maul you” her hill to die on until cinder tries to actually die on it, whereupon salem snaps like a stretched rubber band back to “you can do whatever the hell you want just please for the love of fuck slow down and let me bend the odds as much in your favor as i can.” this woman is immortal and cinder is still shaving years off her lifespan.
and this is going to keep happening until she can get her act together and say outright that she Cares About Cinder, because to cinder all of this just looks like salem yanking a leash to remind cinder she’s worthless. the second beacon arc is going to be hysterical.

Do you think Salem has hobbies if she does what kind of hobbies would she have? What would her inner circles hobbies be?
Let's see... Going for jokes and whatnot, let's see what kind of hobbies Salem and her inner circle probably has.
Salem is literally making Grimm all the time in her black pool. That said, I could see her also being really into cooking and might even watch cooking shows and cooking along with them. She then has her Grimm dispose of what's left of the meals when the inner circle is done eating.
Up next, we have Cinder, who is constantly plotting and scheming of way to become more powerful. It's kinda hard for me to say what she likes to do since most of what she does is all in the interest of serving the purpose of a later goal. That said, I'm having trouble thinking of anything since most of it would be more what she considers a waste of time... except gardening. She has her own personal garden that she plants seeds for and waters until they grow into beautiful flowers or food-stuffs for Salem to cook with. It may also better solidify her ties with Salem.
Tyrian is Salem's oldest and most faithful servant, serving as her tracker and hunter for the Maidens and the relics. Since murder isn't considering a viable hobby, part of me wants to say hunting, though I can't really see Tyrian as a hunting guy. Not with long range methods, anyways. Now fishing is a different story. I could see him dipping his tail into the water, using it was a hook until he yanks up the hapless fish. He also provides Salem with her cooking supplies. Am I just making up a Salem cooking AU? Who know.
Watts is Salem's tech guy, and he is very good at hacking and other computer-based things. Aside from that, I could also see him into other intellectually-driven pursuits. Not chess because chess is too important to the story of RWBY. No, I'm thinking more like crossword puzzles and sudokus. His morning paper is all he needs to have a good time. And if he screws up, he can just erase it because he's not an idiot who fills out the crossword in pen! YOU HAVE PENCILS! USE THEM! ...Wait, what were we talking about?
Hazel. Oh, Hazel, how sad it was to see you go after coming so far. Judging by his size, you'd think he'd be big into weight-lifting and some kind of martial-arts routine, but I think he instead picks up where his sister probably left off with her hobby. I'm thinking things like books or movies or maybe even like tiny horse figurines. Stuff you wouldn't normally associate with an eight-foot-tall brickhouse with an immunity to pain and an unquenchable desire for hate.
Let's see, who else is in Salem's Inner Circle? Looking at the Wiki, it's... Oh no. Ohoho my god... Evernight Castle? No, that's not what it's called, is it? Oh, it is! Oh my god, and it's located in "The Land of Darkness". Yeah, no, Hazel is definitely an MLP fan and he joined the villains to avenge his dead sister. Just... Oh my god... This cannot be real! Ugh... Anyway, who else is there?
Wait, who the hell is Vermillion Raddock? Oh, RWBY: Grimm Campaign. Yeah, one of these days I'll actually see it or hopefully play it, but good golly, will it be a while. Did they ever sell Grimm Campaign merchandise, or was it just a podcast that we had to be members of RT to watch? Oh well, questions for later.
Let's see... Tock... Unnamed female warrior... Oh, Mercury! I guess Emerald isn't a member, either, huh? Or even a member at all? Anyway...
Mercury is probably the easiest to figure out for me. Judging by how he's into sniffing boots and recording genocide, I'm gonna guess he's a blogger of some kind as a hobby. He's not in it for the money, just for the reactions he can get out of people. But then again, I may have a bias against the guy who recorded people being murdered with a smile on his face. Seriously, fuck this guy!
But I could be wrong on all accounts for these characters. What do you guys think?

feeling a bit silly and sleep deprived, time to go back to my roots and connect some dots that probably don’t need to be connected:
convince raven branwen that the survival of her people depends on her cooperation -> once our purpose has come and gone, we’ll be discarded -> what does she have on you?
raven believes salem only keeps her followers around as long as they’re useful; the moment they’ve fulfilled their purpose, they’re discarded. except that for the most part, salem doesn’t have followers who are there for one very specific purpose that has an “expiration date” set in stone—there’s no “once watts / tyrian / hazel have done this specific thing, their usefulness to salem has ended, and off they go.” and if summer joined salem of her own volition, i doubt salem had a specific purpose with an expiration date in mind for her, either.
( not that salem really does that to begin with, but that’s not really the point here; the point is what raven believes. )
well. except for cinder, maybe. salem chose her to be her vessel for the maidens, for the specific purpose to open the vaults and retrieve the relics. which, incidentally, is exactly what salem needed raven’s cooperation for; the spring maiden is needed to open the haven vault… and once their purpose has come and gone… poof.
so, ya know, idk. what does she have on you? what does salem have on raven ( that probably includes threats against her family, if salem’s words are anything to go by )? why does raven think / fear that once they’ve opened the vault and salem has the relic, they’ll be discarded ( permanently )? …curious.

I’m compelled on this Halloween night to throw in my two cents about the whole Cinder issue currently being discussed in the RWDE/Anti-RWDE tags. Because there’s nothing scarier than a badly constructed story :D
More seriously though, the problem isn’t a clear cut failing on the part of a character (Emerald didn’t tell RWBYJNOR that Cinder was in Atlas), or on the part of critics (Stupid RWDE forgot a basic plot-point again). The problem is that RWBY doesn’t have the characters communicate on screen so we, the audience, are perpetually confused about how much the characters actually know. And if you’re not confused, that’s likely because you’re assuming something to clarify the writing on RT’s behalf, an assumption  that other RWBY fans might not share.
Things start out fairly straightforward in Volume 7:
Robyn’s party is attacked and the heroes realize that Tyrian is the culprit. At this point they can theorize that other villains like Cinder might be nearby.
The black, glass chess piece is left in Ironwood’s office. The characters now know pretty conclusively that Cinder is in Atlas, but not where.
With the exception of the Hound, the beginning of Volume 8 puts most of its emphasis on our antagonists instead, having the heroes face off against Ironwood (thematically) and the Ace Ops (literally). This leaves the main villains like Cinder as a side-note, at least from the heroes’ perspective.
Penny fights Cinder in Amity Tower but with the exception of Maria, she’s the only fighter who knows that Cinder is there.
Penny is then hacked and falls, spending the next few episodes unconscious/fighting Watts’ influence. There’s no time for her to report Cinder shenanigans. Meanwhile, heaven only knows what happened to Maria. She might not even be alive, let alone in a position to inform the group about Cinder.
Now, does Penny tell the group everything that happened when she comes back to herself? We don’t know because RWBY skips over important character conversations. This is a major problem for scenes involving secrets and subjective details (like Oscar telling Ironwood about Salem), but it also makes it really hard to keep track of what characters know about basic plot points too, things the audience has omniscient knowledge of, but that characters spread across a kingdom without reliable communication would need to piece together somehow. Did that happen off screen? We don’t know.
However, the last time Penny saw Cinder she was unconscious from their fight. Even if she did tell the group everything in between the hack and the group’s dining room conversation about Ambrosius, her report would likely include something like, “Cinder was out of commission last time I saw her.” AKA, maybe she’s not something we need to worry about right now.
Cinder is also carried back to the whale. Yang, Ren, Jaune, and Oscar don’t see her there. The whale then explodes, leaving the heroes intact, but Hazel vaporized.
Does the group realize Cinder got out before then? No, they don’t. They only encounter Emerald, Hazel, and Salem. Qrow and Robyn might have a decent idea that Cinder was the one who attacked their jail cell, but they’ve been in a separate group this whole time, unable to communicate with Ruby and the others.
Would the group assume that Cinder was killed if she was still in the whale? Who knows because we and the characters both don’t understand how Ozpin’s magic cane works. It appears to have damaged one person, but left everyone else intact. So Cinder is maybe unconscious. Maybe dead. Maybe off somewhere else entirely.
Now, flash-forward to the end of Volume 8 where the group is shocked - shocked, I say - to find Cinder thwarting their plans once more. Which leaves us with two main interpretations:
The group forgot that their longest-running villain was in the city trying to kill them. This makes the group of supposedly competent fighters look REALLY stupid. Personally, I subscribe to this reading because the episode’s final line is Ruby saying she hopes they’ve “thought of everything” and we close in on Cinder smiling evilly. That’s cinematography 101 for, “Oh no, the characters DIDN’T remember everything! Cinder is about to throw a wrench in their perfect plans!” The story HEAVILY implies that the group forgot about her.
However, if we want to be charitable towards the characters and assume (that’s the kicker, we’re always assuming in this show) that they  remembered that Cinder was a threat in a general sense, then their surprise must stem from her remaining a threat right now. AKA, based on limited info from Penny, they may belief that Cinder has been temporarily defeated. Most of the heroes haven’t seen her in person. Penny was the last one to fight her and successfully knocked Cinder out. She was then taken to Bad Guys HQ, which subsequently blew up. Oh, and the former villain in their ranks hasn’t mentioned her at all. It’s likely that the heroes would have a “no news is good news” approach. Surely if Emerald isn’t bringing Cinder up as a problem, then she’s not a problem. If the characters are keeping Cinder in mind, the logical conclusion is that she’s not currently a threat, at least for the time being, because otherwise their new source of villain info totally would have mentioned that. She’s either still K.O.ed, or potentially even dead depending on what Ozpin’s magic might have done to her.
If you’re a former bad guy defecting to the heroes and are trying to prove your worth, it might be a good idea to mention that your boss, the one the hero sitting across from you recently defeated, actually recovered very fast, was tortured a bit, and then got sent on another mission to secure Watts. So she’s back out there causing problems! She’s on task right now to fuck things up with the brilliant scientist that took out your heat, crippled your defenses, and maimed Atlas’ general! That’s good to know, right? As we manage civilian evacuations and try to safely leave Atlas behind, maybe we should take a moment to consider what enemies are still out there and how to combat them? You know, the enemies one of us has intimate knowledge of because she was their peer all of an hour ago?
But we don’t get anything like this because RWBY’s characters don’t talk. It’s stupid both that Emerald didn’t offer information and that no one was grilling her on it. Instead of hashing out who knows what and why that’s important, we’re given vague speeches about the ethics of the situation, always culminating in a, “Everyone is on the same side!” conclusion. Except everyone isn’t. There are clear heroes and villains in RWBY, so it’s weird for the cast (a very large cast, I might add, supposedly filled with various viewpoints and approaches to their problems) to forget about one of the most prominent villains they’ve ever known. It’s even weirder that if they didn’t forget and instead assumed that they were safer than they actually were, that the former villain, Cinder-obsessed character didn’t correct them in-between giggling about her previous death toll.
The fact that Emerald doesn’t struggle at all to leave Cinder and Cinder, in turn, has no reaction to Emerald’s betrayal just highlights how little thought went into this “redemption” arc. If the story can’t be bothered to tackle the biggest emotional beats of that decision, why would it hash out the nuances of the heroes’ strategy and how having unexpected, insider information into Salem’s group would drastically change that? The only thing Emerald does in Volume 8 is (unnecessarily) trick Ironwood, when her status as a former villain should have been used for SO much more, including clarifying for the audience what the characters think is happening with their enemies and how Emerald’s info might change those assumptions.

do you have any voice headcanons for Antares? how they talk, stuff like that?
Okay well here’s the characters that I think would keep the voices similar to what they have in show, because the performances given were excellent and really defined the character to me. The cadence, the tone, all that, these ones work well.
Winter, Ironwood, Tyrian, Watts, Salem, Hazel, Oscar, Ozpin, the Ace Ops are all solid, Robyn, Whitley, Sienna, Raven, Mercury, Vernal.
So here's the ones I'd mess with:
Ruby: I’d want to still have her sound light and innocent, but I’d definitely make her way less squeaky then she was in the show. A voice that can still have a bit of grit, if she needs it. I’m picturing something like Dani Phantom in Danny Phantom, or X-23 in x-men evolution (Andrea Libman’s version). Childish but able to get dangerous.
Weiss: definitely something posh but not necessarily snooty. She should have a very clear voice, one that’s clearly been through a million dictation lessons and speaks quite musically at that. Pick a soprano broadway singer, go from there.
Blake: I think she’d probably have the deepest voice of the main four girls? Not raspy, but resonant. Able to soften up, I picture something like Vi from Arcane or Korra from Legend of Korra.
Yang: Not as deep as Blake’s voice, but definitely with a bit of grit to it that gives her that tough vibe. Where Blake has resonance, Yang does have rasp. Sorta Ryuko Matoi-esque, or like Amethyst from Steven Universe.
Qrow: as much as I like Jason Liebrecht’s work I don’t think he works quite as well for Qrow, which is not anything against him just the voice doesn’t fit as much as I’d prefer. I’ve always felt Qrow should have a voice with a deeper register anyway, so I’d be picking a performance like Wolverine from X-Men Evolution, or Ghazan, Legend of Korra.
Sun: I really like Lego Monkie Kid and all the voice actors are great, I just can’t decide if Sun gets MK’s voice (younger, peppy, excited, also Sokka) or Monkey King’s (equally peppy, a little more deep, a bit tricksy, also Goku).
Ilia: I think Cherami Leigh’s voice acting is great (maybe she can be Blake?) but my Ilia is a bit younger and a lot softer so I’d want her to have more of a higher voice, to contrast Antares-Blake’s lower register. Something that still cracks, a bit like Luz from Owl House, mayhaps, or Marcy from Amphibia.
Summer: if any of you have watched Critical Role 3 Bells Hells and have listened to Ashley Johnson’s voice for Fearne, that’s it exactly. Really soft and breathy and gentle, really distinctive from the rest of the cast.
Tortuga: Tortuga had a very deep voice compared to the other Ace Ops, but not gravelly. Not quite on the levels of like, James Earl Jones, but more like Keith Davids in his Dr Facilier role, able to be quick but with gravitas.
Cinder: needs to be huskier, definitely able to have charisma behind it rather than risking sounding childish, or whiny. I picture something like Meg from Hades or Lust from FMA.
Jaune: I think he’d have one of the higher pitched voices of the male cast? Definitely a tenor, speaks fast and nervously, I picture kinda like Martin Blackwood’s voice from the Magnus Archives (I have no idea what anyone’s accents are and I don’t want to think about it), or Rocky from Lackadaisy.
Nora: super high pitched and nasally, but really sweet and cute nonetheless. I’d say kinda like, Molly from Epithet Erased, or Ivy, Lackadaisy again.
Pyrrha: I think she should have the most standard teenager voice? She deserves it, she deserves normal and not exceptional. I picture, like Gwen Stacy from Spiderverse, or Wendy from Gravity Falls?
Ren: a very subdued, almost monotone voice, its not necessarily particularly low or high, but could totally drop down to something very menacing if pushed. I’m thinking, like, a chilled out version of Percy from Vox Machina, with that same ability to go right down into a danger zone.
Emerald: what if we took Cherami Leigh's Ilia voice and just moved it here what then? Other options I think would suit her would be something like Miriam from Dragon Age (Kimberly Brooks is always a win)
Penny: If Nora was high pitched I think Penny should sound like a literal child, on account of Pietro really leaning into the 'innocent little girl' thing when he was downloading voice clips to make into her synthesizer- or, hear me out: Penny voiced by a vocaloid.

So I’ve been trying to make a dbz overlay with rwby characters so here we go
In order of appearance
Goku: I would have to put jaune only because it fits weakest huntsman weakest Saiyan that’s how they both began plus both of their goofy natures and kind hearts. Many would argue sun but in my opinion that’s a bet on the noses
Bulma: now this one was a little tricky and many will disagree with my choice but penny. This will be explained later and will make since then but with Pietro being a brilliant inventor it works again when I get to Gero it will makes since
Roshi: port need I say more
Oolong: not changing him
Yamcha: Neptune ya pretty obvious really
Chi Chi: now this one gave me a bit of trouble, on one hand Blake it fits her with her dad being a big sting guy mixing well with the ox king it works. On the other hand Pyrrha for 2 reasons. My bad reason is arkos forever, my better reason the marital arts background of chi chi is similar to goku both being trained by Roshi if indirectly like chi chi, this pairs well with jaune and Pyrrha having a similar fighting style thanks to her training him. But ultimately I’m going to have to go knightshade on this
Ox king: Ghira belladonna read previous character
Pilaf gang: team crdl just add a guy right 😂
Krillin: Oscar the friendship between him and jaune pairs well with goku and krillin plus he is the shortest
dr briefs: Pietro as mentioned in my Bulma reason his kind yet odd attitude fits dr. Briefs really well
Korin: Oobleck I needed to be a teacher
Baba: Maria
tien and chiaotzu: Yang and ruby their sister relationship fits with Tien’s and chiaotzu’s quite well with Yang and tien both being over protective the their respective partners
Piccolo: Ren I’ve seen others use him and I believe it fits quite well
Kami: goodwitch I have my reasons (I want king Kia to be ozpin
Gohan: gohan no change except kitty ears and a monkey tail a Faunus and a Saiyan it won’t turn out like in remnant
Raditz: Mercury given his behavior ya
King kia: ozpin normally a disembodied voice nowadays it fits with how goku and king Kia talk
Napa: emerald you can see where I’m going with this
Vageta: cinder and now you know who freiza is going to be
Dende: Nora wanted her and Ren to have some sort of closeness
Ginyu: Tyrian both have a fanatical devotion to their leaders
(I’m leaving most of these unchanged due to lack of people I can use for later dbz characters)
Freiza: Salem both big bads
Trunks: this on is difficult but I’d like to make it unchanged save for paternity (maybe a test tube baby with penny and cinder maybe jaune donated)
Dr. Gero: Jacques ya
Android 19: hazel
Android 18 17 16 : wiess, Whitley, winter in that order
Cell: I’d put Pyrrha if going with perfect cell or watts leaning more towards watts
Buu: tia xaio-long
supreme kia: ironwood
Kabito: Cordovin
Old Kia: freya
Berus: sun
Whis: definitely Pyrrha untouchable queen fits with whis’s untra instinct
This is my thoughts so far I can probably fit others like pre-dbz characters but not right now

Maybe platonic yandere mother Cinder? (RWBY) I like platonic yanderes :3
Yandere Platonic Cinder Headcanons
Tumblr media
•Kind of like Regina’s mom from mean girls. Like let’s you drink and stuff as long as it’s at home or somewhere else she can watch over you.
•There’s a pretty good chance that you’re not her biological child but just someone she happened to see and immediately adopts. Like she saw you in a similar situation as she was as a kid and suddenly anyone who hurt you is dead and she’s taking you home with her.
•Hangs out with a lot of unsavory types but the second they say or do anything negative about her baby they’re goners. Luckily most of them are either indifferent to you or take a liking to you as well.
•Despite Cinder being a prolific villain she won’t let you date or be friends with people like her. She specifically picks the people that you can be friends with which honestly might end up just being Mercury and Emerald.
•You could probably be a pretty good huntress/hunter or atleast stand toe to toe with them. There’s lots of people to teach you how to fight in Salem’s domain and Watts is like super smart.
•Maybe the whole faction takes on a family role? Like Watts is your tutor and Tyrian insists on braiding your hair like his. Just imagine toddler you playing with Salem’s hair jewel things and tripping on her dress when you run after her.
•If you were ever scared of her, Cinder would freak out. She’s definitely a bad person who feels no remorse but that would get her. Like she’s having to go be alone and cry. Really tries to keep the bad parts away from you and gets even more into Salem’s plan so she’ll be able to protect you forever.
•Not physically affectionate at all but will never turn her kid down when they initiate it. Also not into to talking about her feelings but her kid is the exception. Cinder will overcome any needed roadblocks she has for the sake of her child. Still won’t overcome them for anyone else though.
“I don’t care what Salem says if anything happened to y/n while I was gone, I’m blaming it on you.”

Favorite (Characters)
Ruby: *barges in* RatchetMath!
Me: What is it Ruby?
Ruby: You’re showing favoritism.
Me: Okay. And?
Ruby: You need to stop. Why not draw us for once?
Me: Hm, maybe because I like Jaune more. Hell I like Penny and Neo more than you or your team.
Ruby: Why?!
Me: Because your team is horrible.
Ruby: So is team JNPR!
Me: Yeah, but only because they have to follow you. They have some individuality but we don’t explore that as much. Plus, your team would be dead without them. But you know what Ruby, I would rather draw Yang, Blake or any other character except Weiss than you right now.
Ruby: What?! But I’m-
Me: The main character that barely does main character things. Woman, Salem was in Atlas! Why was she not your top priority? Why was James your problem?
Ruby: Um well…
Me: Ruby, she knows your mother! She might know what happened to her! I get Yang was some levels your mom but shouldn’t learning what happened to your actual mom be just as important? Especially after that dark memory.
Ruby: That is true.
Me: You have silver eyes but you still don’t know how to use them. There was army of grimm around Mantle and that would have been good practice. And a better solution than Ren.
Ruby: But then I be overpowered.
Me: No. Ruby your silver eyes only work on one person. If someone sneaks up on you or doesn’t care about that light you give off then, you’re dead. Maria is proof on that.
Ruby: Um..
Me: Plus, the question that everyone in the audience could have an answer to is whether your silver eyes can even work on Salem. In all honesty, it proves the writer don’t keep track of the characters and their personalities to where they fit together in story. You know what I have been making skits, trying to be funny but… the jokes died. Look guys I-I’m sorry but… let me explain.
1. Ruby and Blake should have stayed in Mantle. Why?
1. Salem is the main villian. She knows Ruby’s mother. You know the same mother who left for a mission and didn’t come back. The same mother, who Ruby knows nothing about while everyone seems to have different perspectives of her. Or has a better clue on who she is, than Ruby herself. Plus wasn’t Salem after her too? She basically would be killing two birds with one stone by kidnapping Oscar and giving Ruby a reason to see her. That way Ruby isn’t assuming what happened to her mother. Let Salem antagonize Ruby. (Question: Can silver eyes work on Salem?)
2. Perfect training for silver eyes. Let’s face it, Ren proved to us he can mask a bunch of people without Jaune’s help. All he needed was concentration. However, Ruby is more effective because silver eyes seem to be able to destroy multiple grimm on sight. And with lives on the line that gives Ruby plenty of reason to start using them.
3. Ren calling Ruby out on her issues. Look I loved how Ren was willing to tell the truth, but him revealing Jaune cheated Beacon was… weak. Reason being it relates to Jaune’s character and Ren still follows Jaune’s orders. However, Ruby, who is supposed to be a prodigy because she came to Beacon two years ahead of her class, has not proven once that she is worthy of such praise. The only reason-The ONLY reason Ruby was enrolled into Beacon was her silver eyes. Ruby even in volume one has been nothing but liability. Initiations, she almost dies from a Stinger. Stake out, she almost got run over by a truck and it ended in failure. First mission, she gets kidnapped and almost destroyed a city block. Roman, a man with no semblance or aura continues to beat her four times in a row. And it gets worse. Ruby almost got her uncle killed. She was the first to get knocked out by Emerald. Almost dies by a robot and Godzilla. And the moment she arrived in Atlas her first move was to lie to James. She didn’t even try to stop Tyrian when she saw him. She had her gun with her too. Ren is not her sister, he might as well tell her the facts so she can do better.
4.  Blake is Faunus. Mantle hates faunuses. Why not have Blake help them to prove faunuses are people too? Let Blake represent her people. I mean Velvet and Sun represent faunses more than she does her whole existence. Blake also can relate to Ren’s problem. How? Blake was a part of the White Fang, so there were expectations she had to fulfill. Especially when trying to measure up to Adam. However, she explains the longer she was in the White Fang, the more she found out how messed up and extremely bias it was. Including with Adam to the point she decided to leave. She even states she was lucky that Yang even forgave her after all the trouble she caused her. Blake challenged her bias nature, and it made her stronger for it. Blake would be basically telling Ren the more he tries to live up to someone else’s expectations, without seeing their flaws, the more he loses touch with himself and everyone around him.
5.  Oscar shouldn’t have been able break out of Salem on his own: I’m sorry but… Oscar got beat up. Took a magic beam to the chest. Had to switch between him and Ozpin and mind you he had no aura to help him. He should be tired and unable to move. (In my opinion, this kid was given too much screen time. At first I was worried about him but now I’m wondering why was I worrying at all.)
2. Jaune and Yang should have gone to Atlas.
1. Penny is basically Pyrrha in the opposite light. Penny’s special because she’s a robot with a soul, a mind of her own and an attitude to prove it. She is just as human as everyone else, but no one seems to treat her as such. James only sees her as something of a weapon. Pietro treats her like child even though she’s more mature than the rest of the female cast, except Maria. And now with maiden powers, everyone is out casting Penny even more. Jaune is perfect for her because he has experience with this kind of issue. However, he would’ve had to take different route to the situation considering his failure with Pyrrha last time they had discussion on maiden powers or responsibilities (Destiny.).
2. Jaune already has been a part of maiden business since volume three. His reason to be with Penny would be make sure she doesn’t meet the same fate as Pyrrha or Amber. Not just for himself but for others around him. Especially since Cinder was in Atlas and is willing to hunt her down for the maiden powers. And James was willing to turn Penny into a soulless machine to follow his every command. (Actually, Watts is more a fault considering he hates Pietro.). James and Cinder are also opposite to Jaune in some ways.  James earned his position and earned respect from his military. Jaune on the other hand cheated, and unlike James might not have everybody’s respect. Cinder treats her allies like tools. And with power she just consumes and gives nothing return. Jaune however treats his allies like family. And instead of just taking power he gives power to others around him. He’s the reason Cinder has maiden powers. So, him making it his personal mission to make sure Cinder doesn’t get more power only increases his resolve to protect Penny. (Especially since he already had to kill her in the canon finale.)  In other words, James and Cinder purposed a challenge to Jaune. Can he pervert history from repeating itself? Can he really protect the maiden powers? Is he truly worthy of being a huntsman? What is he willing to risk in achieving his goal? (Also let’s be clear. Hazel beat Oscar down for the password to the relic. James shot the kid and was willing to let him fall to his death. Qrow intentionally punched the kid.  I don’t care if it was for Ozpin, he still punched Oscar. Lion before even knowing Oscar was Ozpin reincarnation was already about kill him anyways. All Jaune did was push him to a wall. Yes, Jaune still would have hurt Oscar, but he didn’t. He walked away.)
3.  A lot of the situations could’ve been avoided or mattered if Jaune was there. Don’t believe me? Well let me explain. Was Ruby the only option when sneaking pass Central Command? No, because they had Weiss, Nora and Penny. Weiss could have done a freezer burn like in her fight with Marrow. Or Nora could have thrown her grenades and Penny just shoots them before the hit the ground or damage anything. Both causing a smoke screen, so no one sees them. Plus, they were already caught by using Pietro credentials. Did Nora need to get knocked out for the team to escape? No. If she had Jaune with her they could’ve one caused an EMP wave being Jaune has gravity and Nora has lightning. Or two, if Nora still went through with it, Jaune would have healed her immediately. Penny lifting and keeping the arena in place. If Jaune and Weiss were with her then once Amity was in position, Weiss with Jaune’s assistances can keep it place so Penny can come back inside and the whole video could be played. Also, Pietro would know what was going on with his daughter and can properly explain how to fix her. (Better than Jaune healing her.)
4. Nora’s whole character is knowing who she is without Ren right? Then why not just have her lead the evacuation once she’s done with Atlas? Why not have her and Yang work together along with the happy huntress to evacuate Mantle? Especially if their friends disappeared to save Oscar. (And before ya’ll tell me they can’t do it….. Yang, blocked a punch from a mech, held off a Manticore, and has a semblance that literally lets her take damage and dish it back five times harder. Nora who literally crushed Weiss and Yang in a food fight. Knocked a giant horse down on its knee. And knocked Hazel away.  Are you seriously saying these girls are not enough to take on a few little tigers? Come on!) If the whole point of Nora’s character development was finding out more about herself then let Nora try something without Ren. Let her call the shots. Let her take charge. Give her a character. (Hell don’t stop there. Have her interact with other characters. Like Jaune. Yang. Weiss. Or anyone other character than Ren. Let them tell her what they think about her. Let Nora be a solution to a character’s struggle. Ya’ll make it sound like Nora has no friends.)
5. All Yang needed was a break from Ruby and Blake. In all honesty Yang should have been the one to see the hounds face and kill it. Why? Well Ruby is Yang’s sister and only reminder of her nonblood related mother. And Blake is her girlfriend. And if we saw the hound’s face, we know it’s not just a silver eyed person. It’s also a faunus. This will give her a reason to protect both her loved ones because by seeing the hound she knows Salem intention with Ruby and want to keep her, and Blake from meeting the same fate of being turned into monsters. Yang should’ve been the 2nd to 4th member of team RWBY to fall. Why? One, a Yang vs Neo fight. Two, Cinder and Neo both wanted Ruby dead. So why not get rid of Ruby first? The fights would have been more thrilling and seeing the character, the show is named after, presumed to be dead would have added stakes and tension to the fight. (Also let me say this. Why is it, that the only great display of the maiden powers I’ve ever seen, was from Amber and not the maidens, as of now, Winter, Raven, and Cinder? The maiden powers are basically magic right? Why isn’t Cinder using any other element than fire?)
6. Weiss was completely useless. Look, as the saying goes, “You can choose your friends, but you can’t choose your family.” And when it came to Weiss and family, she has little to no clue of what it is nor deserves it. Weiss should have been more of an inspiration for Whitley to do right. How? By simply talking to him. What reason would she have other than Mantle? Simple, he’s her brother and she started off like him. Beacon, she was a brat. She was arrogant. And more importantly a jerk. Blake ran because of her racist attitude. Ruby literally had to impress her to prove she can be leader. Even though Weiss is not leadership martial herself.  Plus, hearing May and how she and her family never resolved their issues should inspire Weiss to not repeat that mistake. And guess what, her mom, Willow, the drinker of the family, wasn’t wrong. Both her and Winter left Whitley alone. Klein wasn’t there for him either. All Whitley had was his father. So Weiss, actually acting like his sister and trying to help him allows him to feel less alone. Instead Weiss was complete Jacque through out the entire volume.
And that’s all.  Look I know I should have seen this coming but I had to say it.  Volume 8 could’ve been good. The problem was.
1.       Characters are not placed well within the story.
2.       We lost track of who said characters are.
3.       The ships are in the way.
4.       Being dumb for the plot. (Sometimes it’s necessary.)

The Chess Motif and Salem’s Forces
So I got to thinking about the chess imagery we often see associated with Salem and her faction, and I came upon this theory that her underlings each represent a different chess piece, each with their own uses, advantages and limitations.
With my middling knowledge about chess and chess tactics and my analysis of each of Salem’s current faction members, here’s who I think each of them represent.
The King: Salem
Tumblr media
This one’s pretty easy to pick out. The King is the most important piece in chess; the whole object of the game is to capture your opponent’s King to win. The King itself isn’t a very agile piece at all, as it only moves one space at a time in any unobstructed direction. Therefore, the King surrounds itself with several other more capable pieces which are used to defend it and attack the opposing side.
Salem fits this role to a T. She never once has gotten directly involved in engaging the enemy, but her defenses are so well executed, the opposing side is nowhere close to “capturing” her.
But of course, if the King is captured, it’s all over. Hence why the heroes’ ultimate goal is to stop her.
The Pawns: Emerald, and to a lesser extent, Neo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Pawn is the least valuable piece in chess. It only moves forward one space at a time (with exceptions), and are generally expendable. Pawns will often be sacrificed if it means gaining an advantage. However, the fewer Pawns one has left, the less likely they are to sacrifice them.
In the same way, Salem does not view Emerald or Neo as highly valuable, but still useful. In the right time and place, a pawn can be used offensively, or as effective defense.
However, the main reason I see them both as pawns is because they’re both young women, possible candidates for maiden powers. The biggest strength associated with Pawns is if they’re moved far enough across the board, they can be promoted to a higher piece, usually a Queen. More about that in a bit...
The Bishop: Watts
Tumblr media
Bishops are crafty pieces, able to move in any diagonal unobstructed direction. However, they aren’t very powerful on their own.
Watts is a perfect fit for this role. He’s a capable fighter and can hold his own, but he’s not the strongest when alone. He does his best work in conjunction with others, which is why he often is accompanied by Tyrian.
However, since the Bishop can’t do much on its own, its more likely to be sacrificed to opposing capture for an advantage (captured quite literally at the moment, in fact).
Lastly, in an endgame situation, if the only pieces a side has remaining is their King and a Bishop, (unless the opponent bungles so badly that they box themself in among their own pieces somehow?), it is impossible for these two pieces to achieve a checkmate. A King with a Rook or Queen can, but a King and Bishop on their own is not a winning combination.
The Knights: Tyrian, and to a lesser extent, Mercury
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Knights are very agile and useful pieces. They’re the only pieces which can jump over others, and therefore don’t need an unobstructed path to move. They also move in an odd two-by-one L-shaped path that is difficult to predict or defend against.
Tyrian seems like a Knight because of a Knight’s ability to move past other pieces to get behind the opponent’s defenses. A few well strung-together moves with a Knight can decimate an opponent because there’s no way to block their path. Tyrian is unusually agile, unpredictable, and difficult to defend against, and his specialty is infiltrating and causing chaos, as we’ve seen in Mantle. Knights are also very useful for defending the King from attack for these reasons, hence Tyrian’s loyalty to Salem.
I struggled with which piece Mercury fit the best, but I settled on Knight for him as well for of much of the same reasons as Tyrian. His fighting style often throws his opponents off because it’s so different, and his role in orchestrating the Fall of Beacon by subtly learning Pyrrha’s semblance and goading Yang into attacking him out of turn at the tournament show how useful he is in assisting an attack.
But much like the Bishop, a lone King and Knight cannot win on their own.
The Rook: Hazel
Tumblr media
Since he’s built like a stone tower, this one wasn’t very difficult to choose. The Rook is the most powerful non-Queen piece on the board. It can move forward, backward, and sideways along any unobstructed path. Unless a proper defense is in place, the Rook can steamroll anything in its path, and is among the most useful pieces in an endgame situation.
A lone Rook and the King can win on their own. Rooks are very rarely sacrificed for an advantage, so losing a Rook is an especially hard hit to take...
The Queen: Cinder
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And now the most powerful piece on the board. The Queen can move in any unobstructed diagonal, forward, backward, or sideways direction. It essentially has the combined abilities of the Rook and Bishop.
The Queen is almost never sacrificed under any circumstances, unless immediate victory is otherwise conceivable.
It’s no wonder Cinder identifies with the Queen piece. She is the most powerful member of Salem’s faction and is the most capable of effectively attacking the enemy. Losing the Queen is perhaps the worst thing that could happen short of losing the game altogether.
At the start of every game of chess, the Queen is always right by the King’s side, symbolizing the Queen’s role of being the King’s most important piece of offense and defense. Moreover, I do think Cinder represents the Queen, but more specifically, she represents a former Pawn who has been promoted to a Queen because the King pushed her so far across the board in the pursuit of further power.
One more thing about Queens. In most chess sets (at least the one I have and the competition sets we used on the school chess team), two Queens per color are included in the set, just in case a Pawn is promoted while another Queen is still present on the board. This makes a total of four possible Queens, much like how there are four Maidens. At the moment, there is one Queen to Salem’s side, and one Queen to Ozpin’s (Penny, also a former Pawn), while Raven and the Summer Maiden are essentially off the board for now.
(It is possible to have more Queens than that if more Pawns are promoted, but that’s a pretty rare occurrence).
I might consider doing an analysis like this for Ozpin’s side, but I feel assigning roles in that case would be more difficult. But I might, maybe ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
So there you have it! I honestly had lots of fun nerding out about chess despite not seriously playing it in years. I enjoy the aesthetic and I appreciate the fact that CRWBY does too.

RWBY characters races for AUs set in our world.
How I’m going to do this: three things. The first, the city they live in Remnant. This is the least important because that leaves us with only five…maybe six places compared to our world’s hundreds of countries.
The second will be the original of their names, which they’ll have to keep in the AUs, meaning that they need some culture background for them.
The third will be their fairy tale origins.
So to start, Ruby Rose:
She lives in Vale, which is similar to France (I’ll explain why in another post maybe), but technically grew up in patch, a small island off the coast of Vale. I have no idea about Patch’s culture as we hardly ever see it, so I’m going to skip this one. We also don’t know if either Summer or Taiyang was originally from Vale.
We know Taiyang is Chinese from his name, so I’m going to say she’s half Chinese. I also wrote a western au once and really love the idea of Taiyang being an Asian Redneck…so I think I’m going to say Ruby is very, very southern just because that would be adorable.
But if you don’t want that idea I generally see Taiyang being either Asian-American or Asian-French, or Asian-British if your doing a HP AU. Summer is harder to pin down, but Red Riding Hood was originally an Italian fable, so I’m going to have her be Italian or Italian-American.
Weiss:
Weiss is German, although making her simply white America/British would work. I could see her being Russian too in some AU because Atlas fits well as Russia. For American works, Pennsylvania has quite the German population and coal mines, so that works pretty well for her.
Blake is really complicated. From Remment Australia which is culturally SEA (south East Asian), has an English name but parents with a Hindu-inspired names, but neither looking vaguely Indian. I’m going to assume her family are immigrants (as they are in cannon I think) to Australia, maybe even changed their name to help them fit in. Immigrants from where? Well, India is an option, but I like to think Malaysia. They have a large Indian and Chinese population, and I like to think Blake is a mixture of Chinese, Malay, and Indian ethnicities, from Malaysia and immigrated to Australia. And if you think this is crazy or unrealistic, you haven’t seen anything yet. The sheer mix of cultures I’ve seen growing up as an ex-pat is insane. This isn’t too crazy.
For Yang, we already have Taiyang as an Asian red-neck. Or at least I do. Raven and Qrow are going to be a little harder to pin down, but I’m think bandits getting replaced by mafia. Which mafia? I don’t know, take you’re pick. Branwen is Welsh, but I can’t think of a Welsh mafia. Coming from Mistral I would see them as being Triad, not Yakuza because Raven’s gang is famous for being less than coordinated.
If you need a logical reason for Yang having blonde hair, Taiyang could be only half Chinese, half blonde (blonde is race right?).
Either way I see Raven operating in an American city like New York or Detroit.
This would mean Yang is fully Chinese ethnically.
JNPR:
Jaune’s name and inspiration are all French. However his mother does come from Mistral (I think), so I do see him being half Chinese, but nationally French. It’s also funny to imagine him with a French accent.
Pyrrha: she’s Greek or maybe Greek-American with her parents being recent immigrants. Argus seems to Remnent-Greece and her name and fairy tale are greek.
Nora: she should be Scandinavian. I feel like in a MCU AU she’s Thor’s daughter. But she also grew up as a street rat in Mistral, which is hard to fit in our world. Therefore I’m going to have her in America, the great melting pot (and also America seems to be more like Mistral than any other Remnent king with our state system), and she going to ethically Scandinavian but knowing nothing of her culture due to her upbringing.
Ren: obviously Chinese, but I might have him be American-Chinese to fit his story nicely in with Nora’s.
Others:
Coco: we’re all ignoring that she’s based off Coco Channel, so let’s make her a LA girl
Velvet: Australia, because of the accent. Or maybe English because that is her story origin
Fox: he’s difficult, because tribes are pretty rare in modern AUs. But his story could work for various things. He’s one of the few black characters so he could come from practically any African tribe (I’m currently going with Hausa because it’s one of the few I know anything about). His name is based off ‘the fox and the hound’ which is a rare American story, so he could also be from a Native American tribe if you want the AU to be more American-based.
Yatsuhashi: Japanese, this one is thankfully easy.
Sun: Chinese. He comes from a tribe as well, but I can’t think of any nomadic Chinese tribes except the Uyghurs. Making Sun a Uyghur doesn’t make much sense but it will serve to piss off certain people on the internet. And now this is going to be taken down, isn’t it? Oh wait, this is tumbrl. This is anarchy. It won’t. Forgot why I liked this place for a second.
Scarlet: sorry for the rambling there. Anyway, Scarlet is definitely English. “I hope I don’t get sand in my shoes.”
Sage: well, he’s black, but other then that we have nothing to go one. He’s also from Mistral but that doesn’t really work? If Mistral is America as well as China I guess we can make him African American. Or whatever else works best for the AU. He might be Indian too now that I think of it. Or even Maori. Really options are limitless here.
Neptune: Yeah, so probably just American, but does have both a French last name and an Italian first name. So probably ethically American (aka white mutt). Also he lives near a port, I think I’m gonna gone with him being from Tacoma Washington because I am.
Flynt: African American
Neon: Japanese-American because of her meme (it started as part of Japanese pop song on YouTube, the latter of which is America summed up in one invention)
Oscar: Hispanic-American, he just looks it. And I’m guessing he lives in Kansas for obvious reasons. His last name isn’t Hispanic but their could be a lot of reasons for that. Or he could be Native American (Pawnee, Cheyenne, and Osage are all Native American tribes in Kansas).
Penny: well if she’s still a robot she probably stays white, but if you want her human in this AU she might end up being half black as Pietro is, although she also could just be adopted. I guess the later makes more sense, huh? I figure she’s American, with her dad working with a ‘well meaning’ but ultimately corrupt government. Probably living in DC, as that has both the government and the poverty issues.
Emerald: oohh, boy. This is hard. Sustrai is Basque, and Aladdin is a French addition to an Arabian story, she herself is dark skinned with anime features that are super unhelpful for this sorta thing.
I have three ideas. Brazilian, mostly as there’s no South American themed RWBY characters I can think of, and it’s diverse enough that someone looking like Emerald would fit. Secondly, for American centered stories she’s just an orphan with no idea of her ethnicity. Or she could be African, Indian, Pacific Islander, or Hispanic or some mixture between those four. It’s honestly really hard to tell. In my fanfic she’s from Suriname and ethnically 1/4 Indian, 1/2 Creole, and 1/4 Javanese.
Ilia: Sioux (Native American). Ilia means a lot of things in a lot of different languages, and Amitola mean rainbow in Sioux, so I decided to just stick with that.
Mercury: American, white mutt American. I’m guessing New York or Philli for where he grew up, it seems like a place where he’d be comfortable
Neo: the new novel reveals her father lived in vale (btw I haven’t read it, I’m just getting this off the internet) and her mother was a assassin who’s origins aren’t known. She doesn’t really have a fairy tale. So I’m going to go with British or French (thank RWBY thoughts for the first one) although in an American AU she works as just a white American.
Robyn: depends on what Atlas is in this AU, but probably German or American.
Qrow: I already mentioned he’s probably Chinese due to being from Mistral. It’s a bit weird to think of him as Asian, but not as weird as it to think of Raven as white, so I’ll take it. Although I do like the idea of him being American Irish, that’s fun.
Winter: whatever Atlas is in this AU, German or American, although British and Russian would work well too.
Maria: Mexican
Salem: If you want a AU where she’s just a normal person then New England or Italian for her story origin
Watts: British
Tyrian: uh…I have no idea, but he looks white. And he kinda has a British accent? I want him to be southern for the accent tho. Probably just another crazy American
Cinder: her fairy tale is French but her origin is Chinese. Also, Cinderella doesn’t really have an origin, it’s an ancient story with every culture having at least one Cinderella story. So I’m going to say Chinese.
Hazel: American, from the Midwest. He’s darkish so maybe he’s a POC? Part Native American or Hispanic? Idk or really care I can’t stand Hazel
Roman Torchwick: American-Italian, he runs/works for the mafia
Ozpin: American because of the whole wizard-of-Oz-thing or French, because he seems to have come from Vale.
Glynda: American or French for the same reasons Ozpin is
Oobleck: Jewish American (because Dr. Seuss was)
Professor Port: Russian, due to his fairy tale, or English, due to his style
Taiyang: already said he’s a red-neck Asian.
Raven: depending on whether you want her to be white or not, either Chinese or Irish American, like I already said.
Cordovin: Karen
Ironwood: again, depends on Atlas in the AU. Either American or German…maybe Russian
Clover: Irish-American (or German, obviously the ace-ops depend on where Atlas is. I’m just going to do the rest of them assuming Atlas is American because Germany isn’t that diverse)
Harriet: African-American, I guess. It kinda messes with the story because Harriet is supposed to be privileged, which doesn’t really work in this AU, but she’s also obviously black.
Elm: Just normal American, maybe greek-American because of the Aesop fable themes
Vine: Tibetan based on his design
Marrow: either African-American or Pakistani/Indian-American. (I’m personally going for Pakistani)
Klein: english. All butlers are English. It’s a rule.
Pietro: African-American
Johanna: Pakistani or Indian American
Fiona: Jewish-American (kinda random but while she’s obviously white she also needs to be a minority for the Faunus thing to work)
May: normal upper glass American/German
Ghira: Half Malay, Half Indian, from Malaysia but immigrated to Australia later in life
Kali: half Chinese, half Indian, but also from Malaysia
Adam: much like Fiona I’m going to assume he’s Jewish due to him being white but still needing to be a minority. German or American, again, depending on where Atlas is. Or he could be Chinese, even though it doesn’t work with his name, due to the theory that he was trafficked much like Cinder. I’m going with ethically Jewish though
Sienna Khan: Indian
Huh, I actually finished that. I’m pretty sure I was accidentally racist multiple times and apologize in advance,
I’m exhausted and starving and not thinking straight. But anyway, here it is. Your very messy guide to modern RWBY AUs. I swear this was insane to sort out.

I’m still a little disappointed that Cinder and Hazel never interacted (on screen at least). It would’ve been interesting to see how they’d play off of each other, and some of Cinder’s best moments are when she has a partner to work with.
I also found it interesting she called Hazel, Emerald, and Mercury but not Tyrian. She didn’t know Mercury and Tyrian left for Vacuo hours before the whale blew up.
Tumblr media
A lot of people use Cinder’s deadpan “No” as confirmation she doesn’t care about any of them. Though I’d argue Cinder isn’t the type of person to let her emotions be known, she loves to hide behind her mask of strength. I would’ve liked it if Cinder respected Hazel more because he’s the only one who didn’t dunk on her at the beginning of V4. Hazel has always been indifferent towards Watts, Tyrian, and Cinder, and he was against unnecessary killing. However, that doesn’t absolve him of the fact that he murdered all the huntsman from Mistral with the assistance of Tyrian.
Hazel also took responsibility for Cinder’s failure, it might’ve been for Emerald’s sake, or maybe he had some sense of honor. Whatever the reason was, I still don’t know why he did it to this day.
Anyway, I think Hazel and Cinder had the best reasons to join Salem. They’re both victims of a system that hurt and failed them. Hazel joined because after his sister died, he found out that Salem was unkillable and decided to direct his anger towards Ozpin because he’s lying to children about what their goal was: to play an eternal game of keep-away against an immortal witch. In his mind, Ozpin is worse than Salem because he’s sending them to their deaths with no plan, they were effectively dying for nothing. Cinder joined for more selfish reasons, but it was due to the fact that huntsman didn’t seem to care about a child being enslaved. It could be seen as a symptom of Atlas Huntsman, but as we’ve seen multiple times, huntsman like Qrow are the exception to the rule.  They have different endgames though, Hazel wanted a new world where children didn’t have to die fighting Ozpin’s war against an enemy that can’t die. Cinder just wants power for security purposes and she believes it’s the only way she’ll be free. They were both manipulated by Salem, Hazel most definitely because she allowed him to “kill” her multiple times just so he knew how futile it was to fight her. And Salem has instilled the idea into Cinder’s mind that she’s the only one worthy of the maiden powers. While Cinder has her own agenda, Salem knows exactly how to make it work for her.
One more thing, Hazel and Cinder are the only characters so far to use Dust infusion and Dust weaving, the “archaic” way to use Dust.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They’re the only character so far to utilize Dust like this, and I hope CRWBY brings it back.
In conclusion, this is another reason why I wasn’t a huge fan of Hazel’s death in V8. I wished he interacted with Cinder a little more, and at one point I thought they were setting him up to be the main antagonist of the Vacuo saga.

Your points about Salem really make it evident why Salem and Cinder being at Beacon is probably the only time that we can really learn the truth about her:
Because it's basically near impossible for her to be truthful about anything except only to those she knows she can trust absolutely, or at least those who are able to challenge the facade she puts up around herself.
Tyrian, for all of his devotion, knows nothing about her except what he wants out of her (Destroy the World for reasons not explained).
Hazel was always someone who was on the borderline of betraying her due to his own moral complications. Emerald is basically an automatic no due to her own history with those who try to deceive her. Mercury is a giant question mark so far.
Watts is a big maybe depending on how you interpret his character, though it does lean towards something akin to mutual respect (and the fact that he's tellingly the only one in canon who doesn't seem to project his own desires onto her, not factoring in the dubious canonicity of the JL x RWBY films)
Cinder's basically the only person other than Salem's contact at Beacon who would be willing (or really even consider) carving through the layers of bullshit to figure out what's actually going on, even though I get the feeling she still has to sort out her own side of things in relation to the parallels with the Madame and Salem made in "Midnight".
salem divulges information more or less on the same principle jinn does, which is “if you ask, i will answer”—which is complicated somewhat by the fact that she also really doesn’t know how to communicate what she’s thinking in a straightforward way (cinder asks what’s the point of leaving ruby alive -> “never underestimate the usefulness of others; take leonardo. he was one of ozpin’s most trusted, but now…” -> what salem is trying to express is that summer rose, her general, is ruby’s mother and she’s optimistic about the possibility of getting ruby on their side down the line, but she talks in a circle around her actual point because she isn’t used to having conversations with people, like cinder, who actually talk to her like a person)
so part of the problem is that nobody asks and part of the problem is that salem, while generally honest in that i don’t think she ever lies when asked a direct question, does not think or talk in straight lines. she’s cryptic. i don’t think she’s being cryptic on purpose so much as she’s incredibly fucking old and has spent most of her very long life alone.
and conversely part of the solution is that cinder is likely to ask and summer did ask, and summer has had fourteen years by this point to unravel salem’s cryptic best efforts to probably have a mostly complete understanding of what salem’s deal is and the requisite social skills to, like, translate for cinder. salem Wants People To Know The Truth, she’s not trying to hide, she’s just not making an active effort to not be hidden, so it’s all tipped to start coming out once she enters an environment where it’s her and one person who already knows the game and a second person who is mainly desperate for salem to treat her like an equal.
where oz is the man behind the curtain, salem is stuck behind a mirror. she just needs to be asked, and heard.
(re: her inability to communicate properly, this woman describes the murderdivorce and forever crusade situation as a bad “working relationship.” every time she has to go off-script is a train wreck. she’s on her 1174932th language. someone help her)

Wattscar headcanons pls 🙏 i am searching for trouble
First off, I am linking the Wattscar timeline so you know what's happening in this post.
Secondly, I am mentioning that uh the villains timeline basically stays the same because Watts didn't do much anyway.
It's worth noting that Penny was still framed at the rally, but this happens earlier. The thing that pushes Jacques over the edge is that Robyn's rally was disrupted. Much like 2020, Tyrian helps Jacques by stopping the people in Mantle from being able to vote.
Hero doesn't happen. James gets to his office, and um... Mercury has planted the seer Grimm. Cinder places the queen as normal.
Penny gets hacked. Ironwood manages this by holding a scientist at gunpoint or such.
Nobody dangles Cinder off a building, but nobody needs to. Winter becoming the maiden is what turns her into whatever she becomes in volume 9.
Uh Neo cuts the feed ig. Maybe it's just a button?
Ok so that's all the changes to the villains side. And of course, Salem knows dear Ozpin as Watts now. On the Oscar side, however...
Watts makes Oscar buy stick on mustaches, because he needs to twirl his mustache to be able to think. Everyone except Blake thinks it's real.
Watts actually doesn't have any of Ozma's driving force while he's in Oscar's head. Oscar wants to complete Ozma's mission, Watts just wants revenge for being killed after Beacon. And his overtime pay.
Oscar knew Oz. Nephew maybe? That's why he wants to stop Salem. Also this gives him a base level relationship with Qrow and James. Not high tho.
Ozpin leads the ozluminati, but he's acting as leader only because there's no Ozma to lead.
Wattscar does not like hot chocolate. Oscar has a sudden urge for black coffee.
Oscar becomes the strategist pretty quickly, much like Oz was.
Watts is absolutely just as shady as Ozpin was. He keeps hella secrets too, but his are kept out of embarrassment, rather than fear.
And Watts doesn't go away fully. He just vaguetalks a lot.
Watts recognises and despises James instantly. He still originally worked for James before becoming Ozma. So that's something he has in common with Oscar.
He actually fakes being gone because of this.
As in, even Oscar doesn't know.
He comes out when James shoots oscar and he is fuckin livid. It takes a lot of farmboi strength to stop him from going to maul James there and then.
Oscar likes Watts' sass. This is how they bond in the whale.
Watts feels kinda sorry for Oscar, because he's broke. Watts is Atlesian so... Yano.
Also dadwatts dadwatts
Watts and Oscar chat a lot of shit about everyone in Argus, things you just know he'd say in canon even without Watts.
This leads to Oscar not forgiving Jaune.
Until Jaune buys him his new gear.
Btw cause Salem has it, oscar doesn't have his cane until hazel gives it to him like in canon, so he deadass just uses a revolver.
They both therapy thrift.
Oscar sideeyes Penny a lot. Ruby calls him out on this, where Oscar explains that it's subconscious. Although he really likes penny, watts despises her... For obvious reasons.
Oscar with a transatlantic accent >>>>
Oscar has to drag Watts to get vaccinated. Watts is an antivaxxer.
They both really want a Pomeranian.
Two sassy pos guys snark their team. I have fanart I really want to make of this tbh.

Anyway, the fall of Atlas is a major blow... for Salem.
Like, look: She needs minions. We don’t know why, exactly, but she’s got to have a reason to keep this council of mortals around instead of just using Grimm for everything. Maybe it’s just a way to fill her emotional needs and not be alone, but the point is, Salem will want people she can talk with.
Now, let’s point out that Salem is the Immortal Witch Queen of the Grimm. Even if she says stuff like ‘new world order’ and ‘you’ll never go hungry again’ that’s still a hard sell. Only very specific people are going to join Salem, at least in a direct sense. Sure, Emerald and Mercury and Neo joined up... because of Cinder. They’re exceptions. If Salem wants to accomplish her goals, she needs help. And if we look at her staff...
Hazel, maybe, came from Vale. Tyrian definitely came from Mistral. Watts came from Atlas--oh, and so did Cinder. And actually, Adam caused a lot of trouble for the good guys, and he came from Atlas originally. So did Ironwood, who Salem played like a fiddle. Actually, a lot of the people who stood in the way of the heroes, whether they worked directly for Salem or not, came from Atlas.
Atlas was a major breeding ground for the sort of person so self-focused, so filled with anger and justification and maybe even a little pain, that they wouldn’t care who got hurt in the accomplishment of their goal. Even the Heroes that came from Atlas had that, though they at least worked through it healthily and dropped the issues. Atlas was, in fact, Salem’s shopping mart for minions.
It’s just gone plop.
Sure, she has two relics, a maiden, and an army of demons. Sure, Vacuo is hard pressed and Beacon has already been claimed. Sure, Ruby Rose and her little gang of heroes are scattered and/or out of the picture, it’s a low point.
But she’s only got four minions (plus whoever she was talking to that one time). And only one is absolutely loyal. Mercury’s having doubts, and Cinder just lied to her face. And with that global announcement, pointing out she can be defeated, how many people who would have joined her are going to think she’s worth it?

Who do think is going to die this volume?
JNOR
At first I was so certain that Ren and Nora were on the chopping block from all of the death flags they were raising. However, now that his semblance has evolved I'm pretty sure Ren's was a red herring.
Nora's not safe though. She's currently unconscious & heavily injured. Between the Hound, hacked!Penny, Cinder, and Watts all either at Schnee Manor or on their way, she'd be easily caught in the cross fire once the chaos ensues. I can totally see one of them attacking Nora just to fuck with RWB+WWKM. She shouldn't be in too much danger, but it all depends on what happens.
Personally, I think Jaune's in a lot more danger considering Ironwood's (presumably unknowingly) going to have the Ace Ops blow them all to hell if they can't get Oscar out of Monstra in time.
Death Chance:
Ren: 15%, Nora: 30%, Jaune: variable (depends on how good or bad their mission goes) Oscar: 0% (Oscar's too important to kill rn)
WWKM
Willow has the Dead Mom - Classic hairstyle. I think shit's going to go very wrong very fast and if they have to escape Willow would probably sacrifice herself to let her children get away. Plus, I like the angst that comes with the idea that Weiss has to be the one to tell Winter about their mother's death, and Winter feeling guilty about not being there to help defend them.
Whitley's probably safe. Can't see him dying yet, if ever. There's always a chance he die could, but I doubt it, unless their trying to destroy Weiss or something. Would be cool if amidst the chaos he unlocked his aura and awakened to his semblance. Winter did specifically say "all Schnees", presumably by blood, so it would be weird if he was just normal.
Klein dying would be the saddest thing ever because Weiss and Whitley love him so much and that's exactly why I can see him being collateral damage.
May isn't dying. RWBY already has an inadvertently triggered the bury your gays trope with Clover and I don't think they'd be willing to deal with the backlash of killing off the only confirmed trans character in the show. Plus, her voice actress is trans irl so I don't think they'd be as happy to voice for the character if that's what the writers had in-store.
Death Chance:
Willow: 95%, Whitley: 15%, Klein: 50%, May: 0%
RWBY
They're all title characters. None of them are dying until the very last volume, if at all.
Death Chance:
Ruby: 0%, Weiss: 0%, Blake: 0%, Yang: 0%
Villains + Antagonists
Ironwood seems like he's a primary candidate for getting killed this volume. Pretty much everyone views him as an enemy now. Salem has only let him live this long because his paranoia and distrustful, authoritarian nature is useful to her and easy to manipulate, Qrow wants him dead because of Clover, Cinder just loves seeing powerful men burn (literally) and would do it for kicks, and if Ruby finds out that he's the one who ordered Watts to hack Penny then even she will want him dead.
I feel like Watts is coming to the end of his usefulness, both as a character and as Salem's minion. I mean, it sounds like his skill set would be mostly useless in Vacuo and I don't really think there's anything left for him in Vale that he hasn't already done. I wouldn't be surprised if they killed him by the end of the volume.
Emerald and Mercury are both safe for now, unless they do something incredibly stupid or risky. Actually, Emerald might already be on thin ice after her, Cinder, and Neo snuck off to Amity. If she's going to ask Jinn something she better make her question a good one!
Hazel is in danger. I feel like Salem already has it out for him so if he tries defecting or using the lamp and gets caught she's probably just going to kill him.
Tyrian is a motherfucker to kill so assuming he doesn't get sniped by some serious bad luck it probably won't be this volume, especially with him heading off for Vacuo.
The Ace Ops are in an interesting position. Pretty much all of them, except Vine, one way or another want to defect from Ironwood and his absurd orders. I feel like at least one of them is going to die, but I don't think all of them will. I think Elm and Vine are more likely to die than Harriet and Marrow, but maybe that's just because the latter get more screen time than the former.
Death Chance:
Ironwood: 85%, Watts: 70%, Emerald: 30%, Mercury: 0%, Hazel: 60%, Tyrian: 0%, Harriet: 30%, Marrow: 30%, Elm: 50%, Vine: 50%, Cinder: 15%, Neo: 0%.
Misc
Penny won't die again. What's the point in bringing her back, giving the Winter Maiden powers to her instead of Winter or Cinder, only for her to die and have one of them get the powers like they should've the first time. Killing the same character again for dramatic effect won't work the second time. It never really does. Could have some drama with Pietro deciding whether or not he wants to give Penny a third iteration at the cost of his life, but I'd rather kill him to raise the stakes for her so that a third iteration is impossible and she can't come back again if she dies.
Maria is a treasure and if she dies we riot.
Winter is pretty up in the air right now. Depending on what happens she might throw her life away all for nothing because Ironwood told her it was the right thing to do, just in more glorified wording. Or she could comes to her senses and defects like she so desperately wants to. If Willow does die in Schnee Manor and Winter finds out about it, I can see this easily being what pushes her to follow her heart instead of continuing to pretend to be the obedient soldier she never really was.
Death Chance:
Penny: 0%, Pietro: 50%, Maria: 30%, Winter: 50%
And this concludes my death predictions forecast! Thanks for the ask @neospacecat!
***REMEMBER*** These are only my personal predictions and should be taken with a grain of salt. This entire post is merely speculation and should be treated as such.
