I know y'all are rightly pissed that Devin Grayson made Damian down to arrest rioters at Pride and Jon tell him that Pride's actually just "a big party now". But maybe the conversation you should be having is how much the Batverse is inherently copaganda.
The Batverse is about a billionaire who works on the side of the police, to arrest people for mainly street-level crime. Its stories are written mostly by non-marginalized white cis het people like Devin Grayson for the white liberal gaze. The privilege and myopia of that Pride story is a feature, not a bug.
Being queer still means projecting ourselves onto media that was never meant for us, even if they repackage it every so often to seem like it does. When we lose sight of that, we fall into the trap of looking to them for representation or satisfaction, and not fully interrogating what we are being made to consume. There's a reason why police and prison abolition, abolition of carceral systems, labour, queer and civic rights are all intertwined. If you're okay with seeing Damian apprehend petty thieves and drug pushers and turn them over to the police, then there's no point in you getting mad that he wants to do the same to unruly protestors. In both instances, he's reinforcing a system that punishes marginalization and reinforcing the authority of an inherently violent institution. Why do you accept the same injustice when inflicted elsewhere?
We all push aside our beliefs to accept the conceits of a fictional universe so we can enjoy it. But being able to feel discomfort with the text is also good, because makes you want to write a better one. The Batfamily characters are fundamentally flawed heroes, like ourselves, and can learn and evolve in their ethics and worldviews the same way. Trying to find better ways to tell their stories makes the world as a whole slightly better, safer and more inclusive than it was before, which is what Pride is all about.
