Reiji Sakamaki:

In the dimly lit confines of the Sakamaki residence, in the heart of Reiji's private chambers, you gathered your courage. Your heart pounded against your ribcage as you stood before the closed door leading to his lab. You knew this was the moment, the moment to confess your feelings to the arrogant and perfectionistic vampire. With a deep breath, you knocked on the door. "Reiji, may I come in?" you asked, your voice trembling slightly. Inside, Reiji was hunched over his workbench, engrossed in a concoction of bubbling liquids and arcane scrolls. His violet eyes flicked toward the door, and he sighed impatiently. "Can it wait?" he retorted, his tone as cold as ever.

You swallowed hard, forcing yourself to take a step into the lab. "I... I can't wait any longer," you stammered, your hands trembling. "Reiji, I need to tell you something." Reiji raised an eyebrow, finally tearing his gaze away from his experiments. "This had better be important," he grumbled, irritation clear in his voice.

Gathering every ounce of courage you had, you took another step closer. "Reiji, I like you," you confessed, your eyes locked onto his. "I know you're always busy with your experiments, but I can't keep this to myself any longer." For a moment, silence hung heavy in the air. Reiji stared at you, his normally composed expression faltering. Then, he let out a long, exasperated sigh. "Honestly, you choose the most inconvenient times for such matters."

But to your surprise, a small, almost imperceptible smile tugged at the corners of his lips. "Very well," he conceded. "I suppose we can discuss this later. For now, help me with this experiment. Your assistance might prove useful." Though his dismissal was still evident, his willingness to entertain the idea warmed your heart. You nodded eagerly, stepping closer to Reiji and his bubbling potions, grateful for this small moment of connection with the prideful vampire.

I enjoy reading clean, closed door romances, such as ones written by Emma St. Clair, Aspen Hadley, Jenny Proctor, etc. They're great, but as a Black woman I wondered if there are any Black/POC authors working in this genre. “A Not-So-Distant Love”, by Heidi Kimball

This book was provided by Covenant Books in exchange for a fair and honest review RELEASE DATE - Oct24, 2023 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I feel that before you start reading this book I must warn you to read “Heart in the Highlands” first. “A Not So Distant Love” feels more like a spin-off than a second book in the series, but the two books are so deeply connected that I wouldn’t recommend reading this book first. Our wonderful female protagonist is not just the daughter of the couple of that “first book”, she played an important role in her parents happily ever after, but before that, her father made a terrible mistake towards her mother who was abandoned when she was pregnant with her. Charlotte doesn’t remember anything about her father not being there in the first couple of years of her life, so the man is worried that she could repeat the same mistakes. There’s a subplot in which Callum, Charlotte’s father, gives her the journal of his youth and how the love story between him and his wife succeeded.

Charlotte is destined to inherit the dukedom one day. But before that she needs to get to know herself. She needs to find her calling, and she feels that by accompanying her cousin Tavish to Pittsburgh in America, and help him for a few months, will be the experience of her life. So she and Tavish depart the Highlands and arrive in the former colonies to Pittsburgh, a town which is quickly growing and where Tavish will make a man of himself. There they meet the Maganns, a lovely couple who will host them as Tavish is good friends with their son Liam. And also in the family there is this man who keeps very much to himself. Doctor Alec Galloway is a self-made man whose father was Martin Magann’s best friend who died when Alec was very young. Alec has been grieving the loss of his wife for three years and likes to live in isolation, in penance and atonement for what he feels was his responsibility in saving her. So to keep his distance from a woman to whom he feels attracted he’s determined to have a strained relationship with the future duchess by taking a dislike to her. But things take a turn when Charlotte demands of him to cure a pig after he injures the animal in an accident.

As I said, this book is deeply and intimately connected to “Heart in the Highlands” by Charlotte reading her father’s journal and learning life lessons that could mend her relationship with Alec while at the same time she will understand that her father and mother are not perfect and that they struggled back in the day, even though their marriage seems to be perfect now. I loved how reminiscent of the past this book feels. Heidi Kimball manages to write beautifully about nostalgia, grief, loss, guilt but also light and hope for the future. The pace is slow and delicate, measuring every word, savoring her text like a favorite dish cooked by a loving mother. All of her characters are good people, there is light and there is darkness in all of them, some of them are gloomier than others and Charlotte is like the lighthouse that brings all of them together, in peace, comfort and optimism. I loved her and her internal journey as well as her love story, she’s such a good woman that you only want her to fulfill her dreams, while at the same time you feel for Alec, who is a good man as well, a man who certainly doesn’t deserve the kind of metaphorical flogging he’s been giving himself for three years. He will also have to find himself before being able to fight not to lose Charlotte.

I have blueish-gray eyes with red hair that's in a side shave (like one side on my hair is shaved). I am chubby, I have tons of freckles except on my face. I like wearing emo style clothes or comfy clothes like hoodies and sweats. I hate dresses and shorts, I don't like showing off skin.

Likes: anything with drawing/painting, games including board games, reading and writing.

Dislikes: uhhh spiders, driving (I refuse to get a driver's license it's a huge fear of mine.) I'm not scared of being in a car just driving it.

Isfp-t or my kin itto and scaramouche, I am a cancer. People say I have rbf (resting bitch face). Though I am really nice to people, unless they mess with the people I care about then I couldn't care less about them. I try to be helpful when I can. When I am around people I know, I can be loud and talkative (the loud part isn't on purpose it's just when I'm happy or excited). I tend to put people a lot before myself. I don't really like talking about my personal issues to anyone and can be known as the therapy friend. It's the opposite though when I'm around people I don't know, I'll be quiet and not wanting to interact. I have adhd, depression and anxiety (wonderful I know). When I do get upset I don't talk and won't interact until I have calmed down. I do cuss a lot though I'm more careful when I'm around kids/people I don't know. If I have a fight with someone I prefer to sit and talk it out and hate it when they walk away from me when I'm just trying to talk to them.

My favorite nation is fontaine (mostly because you can go underwater and I love sea animals, my favorite element is electric (fire is a close second).

I like a lot of the charactersin genshin but imma put the ones I don't wanna be matched with: heizou, kazuha, female characters (I don't know I just don't like the female characters romantically).

I don't write for genshin impact but with some help from an expert (a friend who plays it... 🤡) I matched you. 💘💘

You couldn't help but chuckle at his audacity. "Impressive," you admitted, giving him a playful smile. Childe's grin widened, and he extended a hand. "I'm Childe, by the way. I couldn't help but notice you on your way somewhere. Mind if I join you?"

Your heart fluttered as you took his hand, a sensation you hadn't expected. His impulsive nature was infectious, and before you knew it, you were walking together, discussing everything from art and games to your shared love of the electric element.

Over time, Childe's thrill-seeking spirit and your quiet, supportive nature seemed like a strange but perfect match. And it was during that first walk, amid laughter and the occasional drawn-out silences, that Childe realized he was falling in love with the enigmatic traveler with red hair.
