Pt 1 - Origin of Magic
*.*.*
The Potters.
One of the Sacred 28 families, equaled by few in wealth and stature amongst Wizarding Britain, now had one heir. Born late in life to his parents, James Potter stood a beacon of hope for their line to continue.
So proud, so vain, so entitled for all he had been given and was assumed destined to achieve. Given all he could ever desire and more. And all he wanted upon first sight was one of a redheaded duo tentatively entering the 9 3/4 platform. Future allies were made upon that same train, distant relations and strangers alike to help raise himself and his clan higher.
He saw who he wanted. Many would see the smug devastation dealt out in conquest of his prize, to the dismay of said prize herself and all around her.
 *.*.*
The Snapes.
Downwind from a foul smelling mill nearby to a polluted river little Snape again found himself crouched inside a rotating tunnel built into the jungle gym on the playground in the park by his home. Somehow thunder overhead, while terrifying in itself, paled in comparison to how his parents’ contemptuous behavior made his heart pound in fright. And just like the wind to vanish and suddenly appear, one of his two red headed anchors appeared at his side. Not the one his heart yearned to belong to, who he feared to ever show this side to, but to a confusing diamond in the rough he equally never wished to be parted from.
Identical to a T in appearance alone the fiery tempered young girl who seemed as troubled as him inside adamantly seemed at odds with her picture perfect life. Shivering to the next explosion of thunder and lightning Severus glanced at his trembling friend he scooted a bit closer to, making use of his poorly sized clothes to share his tent of an outer coat which always seemed to do the trick. “Did your parents bake you too many pies?” he asked sarcastically, his only way to vent his confusion and frustration at her for why she had been recently talking about not wanting to go back to her parents’ haven of an abode.
“I had the dream again,” she whispered frailly on the cusp of tears. Stopping as she regretted saying even that much.
Her tone alone had him shift a bit closer and turn his head to look at her as face on as possible to ask in seer concern, “What dream?” She simply shook her head, now with tears pooling into her pink eyes he’d neglected to notice having not looked her way until now. “Tell me. You and Lily never expand on dream when it comes up.”
The force in his gaze was unnecessary as she simply finally felt herself ready to share this truth with him in particular. “I keep seeing this woman, she’s trapped, and alone,” a tear broke loose and before she could help it she had leaned into the hand of his that rose to wipe it away. A move that had him halt in his tracks, uncertain if like him she had been neglected of family contact and sought this clear innocent trusting comfort from him, someone who would understand having parents who truly didn’t care if he lived or died. Yet she straightened up and sniffled hard to keep from the failing means to stop a second tear and third soon to follow while she squeaked out, “She looks-,” her voice cracked and down into her propped up knees and legs now folding up to press to her chest her head burrowed to hide her face urging him in to loop an arm around her back and a hand on her shins to coax her out again.
“Looks what? Like what? Is she hurt?”
“Like me,” she squawked out in a pop of her head up if only to clasp hands over her mouth she felt his fight to pull away in the emergence of a beak out of her teeth and lips and blood red shade to cover the whites of her eyes now with golden pupils. Again she burrowed her head into her knees, clearly frightened of scaring him away. Pain, so he’d read often mingled in sadness came with the occasional rage, something he could attest to and now guessed that was why she was trembling, in rage and not fear. Though surely now that had faded as he heard her squeak out frightfully soft, “What if my parents lock me away too?”
Right away he folded around her as if the action could be a shield against that possibility to last for years to come until she was able to choose herself in legal age on what to do. “I heard them, they found me on a walk.” His eyes he had been clenching so tightly to enforce the wishful intentions snapped open in shock to let a tear of his own fall. “Like magic, they said, to, someone on the phone. That’s why, they don’t know what to do or say, when it happens, when I get angry. They treat it like it’s some sort of trick.” Sharply she drew in a breath to assure him, “No matter what, I swear I won’t hurt you.”
“I know,” he whispered back in reply and as she nodded he eased her back into his side uncertain of what else to say. She wasn’t his love’s twin, merely made to look like her, again most likely out of fear. She was one of his anchors and now he felt a stab deep in his chest she had never shown him her true self, shared her fears and nightmares when always when he had his own she would appear to console him. Now he knew, and now he would work hard to prove that she could trust him with anything, and he would never harm her in return for the oath she had given to him.
 *.*.*
The Evans.
Petunia Evans, daughter of a well respected couple, skipping at the side of the pram they pushed. All four lost to the bliss of their vacation and tour of the countryside they chose to vacation in. Passed beyond a veil somehow the sight of an infant, the same age as their youngest, held in the arms of a rather cross Nun. Inclusion of this out of place orphanage dulled this quaint town. Right through the bars an ache stirred. Parents of two daughters just moments ago would within the chime of the next hour have three.
A child found as if by magic. One Petunia would take solace in also being the lesser favorite of their begrudging and obstinate Great Aunt Gertrude who would impose herself and her opinions upon the Evans household whenever possible. Petunia never seemed to find out what the woman wanted from her exactly. Not like Lily. But this new sister soon would draw a special strain of reluctance from their guest. When she would throw her first tantrum and sprout a beak in doing so.
A shape shifter. A mimic. A freak. That last word slipped out when she was alone, but how her sister acted after that she had heard it being muttered from her older sister who didn’t like being mimicked. “I’m sorry,” Petunia repeated until it just about made her throat bleed for weeks when she got the chance. She didn’t want to hurt Jewels’ feelings, but no one in the family knew just what to make of this and school would start soon. So the youngest girl would have to do something about her ever changing appearance.
.
She wasn’t a freak. Could she be? How would she know? Jewelia Rose Evans, commonly called Jewels. A rarity in their little garden patch surrounded cottage haven. A child with eyes that dead on were a deep purple that from the side like a mystical creature appeared neon green.
A child inexplicably able to morph her hair and face and body to whatever she desired. Or one uncontrollable appearance when in a quick fit of rage. And she desired to not have her older sister call her a freak. So, like the beloved Lily she molded herself. To don steady brilliant green eyes and crimson hair, and still the chanted word persisted. This time from others who could sense something was off about the youngest girl hiding behind another’s face while not solely in the company of family.
In every hiss she whispered to the garden snakes in their garden she got to agree to keep from harming Mrs Evans. In every blossom she and Lily helped to return to full bloom. Freak would echo and sting, and burn like an acid that no one could scrub off of their skin and hearts. All she could the eldest sister tried to step in where possible, especially now the nightmares were growing more frequent and her baby sister was never a day without pretending she hadn’t woken hours before she should and wasn’t able to go back to sleep. Something was wrong, even safe at home Petunia saw that Jewels was scared of what was happening to her, so she tried to help. She wouldn’t let her mimic her, but she could offer simple distractions and copies of magazines borrowed from her own friends in school to fawn over. Small things, distractions really, all the young teen was capable of scouring up off her own imagination.
.
Eleven years would fly by and those sisters, close as any, now faced division like no other. Coming in the form of two letters, just two, not three.
“How wonderful, isn’t it, to have two witches in the family?!”
They loved their elder sister and cheered her on in every endeavor, as they would even from afar. Both found solace with the Half-Blood boy from down the lane. Who shared the moniker of Freak on top of a house of pain to hide from.
Together the trio shared all the magical things. A world their cherished Petunia would always, to them, wrongfully be forbidden.
 *.*.*
Toujours Pur. The words etched beneath The Black Family crest.
The most distinguished and expansive line descended from Salazaar Slytherin, the grey bearded Wizard beyond compare. With eyes just as distinguishable, a deep violet dead on and emerald from the side that had darkened in beauty and knowledge as he had aged.
This line bore its own fabled beginning in the wielded of its birth. Major Ursa Black, fabled Warrior of old and Keeper of the Stars. Every generation must have one. One to always be looking up and in his esteemed legacy was noted to have become a star in his passing.
Thus beginning the tradition of naming his heirs after stars, with whom all could hear when focused. Night or day through their blood bond their ancestors could always conference with the youngest of their line for guidance, and through the stars pass on the path to their nearest of kin for aid.
Sirius and Regulus had those words drilled into their heads between lessons. Always pure. Always something. Always in language lessons, instrument lessons, gymnastics, botany lessons, classical dance lessons. Always something. Never enough and pushed to achieve more than their parents.
Parents, Walburga and Orion, in a strive to inherit more when their patriarch passed, wed and conceived twice to a far from loving home, that in early days of their union had moved to the dark Grimmauld Place. One of numerous properties within the Black Family line, each magically linked to the coveted unplottable Black Family Mansion. A home their parents desired more than anything. Tucked safe in the top of far distant mountains that none could climb or pass over without coming to a grizzly end to protect the hidden haven. Every angle gave clear view of those treasured stars. Up where their ancestors rested for all eternity.
Sirius came to Hogwarts first, and by word of his first letter home knew come spring time he’d return a failure. Sorted wrong, and kept in said wrong place by order of the Headmaster. Albus Dumbledore who refused to see reason and move him to his proper place. Who was reluctant to take orders from his predecessor Phineas Black’s portrait in aim to please his living kin.
But the teen didn’t want to be proper.
One glimmer of hope for his parents came in an alliance with the Potter clan. An esteemed older relation by marriage, a silver lining. An alliance able to be boasted of during grim discussions amongst other relations, also with children attending Hogwarts. Often brought up in shared stories from their son who could easily reach his cousins in Slytherin if need be.
And with that Potter boy came need.
A bond to rival any brothers, a ferocity followed by fury that often had him turned out of his dormitory. With no place to sleep, that need sent him down to the dungeons. Down to his place in Slytherin’s dormitories. There he could find his cousin Narcissa, who would always take pity on the boy now bounced from one rough tide to the next. On those nights lent him a blanket to sleep on one of the couches in the common room, as long as he required it. Until James would let him back into their dorm.
He always would. Unknown to him this pattern would continue for years. Both pitted together against a dark haired Severus, their chosen rival who aimed to divide him from the identical sisters. Severus. Who never knew what to expect seeing Sirius, the teen now unthreatening in his presence when forced to take shelter in the Slytherin common room.
Severus, who never understood just like Sirius never could, why them? Why did they have to be targets of such pressure and expectation? And be magnets for such painful moments in their lives? James had chosen Lily. While magnificent as James had dubbed her, Sirius from the first moment of seeing her, instantly plummeted for Jewels.
Sirius had made so very many mistakes. But every time the usually divided houses would share a class he could see one glow in his future, the girl who held a million secrets in those rare eyes. The girl who whispered to animals, and always bore a forbidden sense of kindness and mystery. He loved her, but she loved Severus. The fact in that burned hotter than any flame ever could. But still, the young Ravenclaw powder blue and grey adorned girl, who flit in and out of his view, would be respected in her choice until he could one day earn her love.
Beyond flawed himself, and prone to tries and fails to move on he couldn't stop loving her or imagine anyone else. First dates were beyond easy to obtain. But his growing list of exes would have on average just minutes of his attention before he would flee to find her again.
A list that anyone, including her would give raise to doubt if he could be trusted with anyone's heart at all; the only real argument in time to hinder a try to accept his offer to give romance a shot. Once his prankster exterior was shown to not be his only side. But beyond his name and assumed failure who he would grow to be would stun even himself.
No matter the tries to hide it from the world a war was coming. People would have to choose their sides. And against everything burning in him to stupidly run head first at the first chance for a fight, something more important would offer him an impossible choice. One impossible choice of many he would tackle.
Who he should be. Who he wanted to be. And who those he loves would need him to be. His world, this world was about to change into something none had seen before. One to break him and his family, both chosen and blood born, in ways beyond repair.

Notre Dame | paris paloma | Part 1 of 2
Word count: 2.7k
Pairing: James Potter x F!Bestfriend Reader
Summary: Hogwarts years | You were James’ best friend since first year. Throughout your years at Hogwarts, you had started to develop a crush on James, but you refused to act on your feelings due to the fact James only ever had eyes for Lily. Now you're sitting at his funeral, reminiscing about the past and you can't help but feel regret and guilt.
Authors note: This is my first fic /one-shot so forgive me if it isn't that great to read, I just found it fun being able to interpret lyrics into stories about characters I love. The story loosely follows the Marauders scenes in the HP movies. I picture James with either a scouse accent or a really chavvy London accent, but you can picture him however you want. I apologise in advance if the tenses get mixed up, the story is made up of the reader looking back on the past and reliving certain moments.
______________________________________________________________
‘I'm in the rafters looking down  It's cold up here  Between walls of stone  I made my home’
The church is cold and dim. Especially in the upstairs seating, which is where you are situated. As you try to listen to the speeches full of childhood memories and happier times, you can't help but lose focus and think about the what-ifs and how things could've gone differently. If you had never met James in that cabin on the way to Hogwarts, you wouldn’t be feeling this pain and heartache, but you also wouldn’t have had such a joyful and exciting time at the school. Hindsight is a funny thing after all. “What if it was me and not Lily? Why wasn’t it me? Why did I have to fall for him?” You wonder what the answers to these questions could be, but the harsh truth is that you never will, and you will live with the never-ending ambiguity until the day you die.
‘And the air hangs heavy with the incense  Feathers fall from pigeons  Cooing in the tower’
Your first year, you remember it all so clearly. You were looking to find a cabin for the journey to Hogwarts, but the majority were filled, and in the rest, there were stone-faced older kids that openly sneered at you anytime you walked past them. Until you found his cabin.
 He was the only one in there and you thought that he looked somewhat friendly, so you decided to take a chance. It ended up being one of the best decisions you’ve ever made.
 He welcomed you in with a bright smile on his face, despite looking like his face would split with how wide his smile was, he asked you the standard questions, “What's your name? What house d’ya think you'll be in? D’ya want to be mates?” Of course, I wanted to be friends with him, I probably would have been miserable without him in my life but then again, I wouldn’t be so heartbroken now. Hindsight is a funny thing after all.
You can recall the way his eyes gleamed when he introduced himself as James. James. Tears sprung to your eyes, making your surroundings go blurry. You can't help but miss the way he proudly said he was a Gryffindor “where dwell the brave at heart” and how Slytherin was full of “evil prats and I'd rather die than be in Slytherin.” You had always admired his pride and how he never let anything upset him too much or for too long.
That is of course until Lily Evans became more vicious and spiteful in her rejections and jabs. Whenever James was insulted by his “Lilyflower” he let it break down his nonchalant persona and let it cut him deeper than any knife ever could. His Lilyflower. The common factor in all your suffering, you couldn’t blame her of course, it wasn’t her fault that a big oaf like James Potter fell in love with her. But it's not like that fact softened the blow in any way.
You decided to stop that train of thought before you cried even harder. Instead, you choose to remember when the Trolley Lady came to the door and being breath taken at the assortment of sweet treats. Upon looking in your purse which was just a pouch, you’d realised that you didn’t have enough to get the Bertie Botts Every flavour Beans that you would've liked, with disappointment quickly replacing your awestruck expression, you had declined and took to looking out the window instead of having to see the trolley taunting you with all its colours and designs.
That’s when you heard him.
“We’ll take the lot of ‘em” you heard him say and you had insisted that he shouldn’t be wasting his money on you, but he simply drowned out your pleas and focused on the shock of the Trolley Lady. He was always so generous.
After much reluctance and countless Thank you’s, you'd decided to have a few cauldron cakes and indulge in a chocolate frog when a small timid boy opened the compartment door and asked if anyone had seen his toad, he introduced himself as Peter Pettigrew and he ended up sitting with the both of you for the rest of the journey while you had pulled out a book to read and ended up falling asleep with your head leaning on the compartment wall.
‘I rarely go down there, the view's just so beautiful from here  And I can see everybody at their worst points  At their worst points’
You start to remember the moment you openly started looking at James differently. It was the end of third year, and he had just won the quidditch match between Gryffindor and Slytherin after declaring during dinner in the great hall that Gryffindor was 100% going to win and he would “wipe his arse with the slithering bastards”.
You also remember his mumbling and moaning about having to go to detention and you remember him being too busy laying his head on your lap when you both were in your dorm and going to sleep while you read a book.
 But there he was on his broom hovering above the crowd that had formed to celebrate the win with him. The noise of screams, chants and shouts reverberated across the entirety of the school grounds. The thought of it making you shiver. While James was practically the same shade as the snitch by how brightly his smile was beaming, you were perfectly content with watching him from the Gryffindor stands and away from the chaos that was the Quidditch pitch.
To this day you can still feel the way your heart skipped a beat when he looked up and smiled at you. At least you thought it was at you. You noticed his wet hair, whether it was because of the rain, him sweating or a combination of both, you didn’t care. His curly dark brown hair that normally looked so fluffy and messy that you just wanted to run your hands through it and make it somewhat tidier.
His arms that made his jersey look to be too tight, it made you picture scenarios with him being able to carry you places when you got too tired, fighting someone who tried to hurt you. You are still quite ashamed to admit the times when you got flustered at the thought of him using them to pin you against a wall and having a heated makeout session in a broom cupboard.
Thoughts aside, you had decided to retire to your dorm for a quick nap. The cold can be very tiring. You gathered your things and stood up only to see Lily Evans, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew sat together directly behind you. You hadn't even noticed them while you watched James previously.
Lily and Peter said hello while Remus only managed an awkward tight-lipped smile. You and Remus didn’t become friends until your seventh year when you both bonded over being unrequited lovers. The reason for this being that you always felt like he could see through you. He knew things about people before they even knew it themselves which always made you paranoid that he could see your feelings for James and tell him, and as a result, ruining the best friendship you ever had. At least I don’t need to be paranoid anymore.
Your mind skipped to fifth year, when you were sitting with the Marauders on a warm sunny day, exams had just ended, and you all were just waiting for the results to be calculated. That’s when you heard the boys get up and walk over to a nearby tree. You looked over and saw a mop of stringy black hair and a pale face with an expression of distaste painted on his face. Snivellous,, the foul git.
You had chosen to stay far back enough that you could still see what happens clearly but ensured you weren't too close as to avoid McGonagall's wrath if she were to show up at the scene.
The next thing you knew was that Snivellous was hanging upside down in mid-air. Levicorpus. You remember coming across the charm in the library with Sirius and James while looking for more spells for future pranks. You never got involved in the pranks because you didn’t fancy sitting in a silent room for an hour for detention or, Merlin forbid, whatever task Filch might've issued you with.
There was always a slight rift between you and Sirius because of your refusal to get involved in pranks, he would never have outwardly said it in front of James or Peter because of their loyalty to you, but he disliked how you would only ever consider helping them if James had asked you. You were the only girl in Hogwarts he couldn’t sway with his charm and good looks. And Merlin did it get him jealous. Not that you had noticed back then at least.
You ended that tangent before it made you spiral down a rabbit hole of confusion. You thought back the past, Snape was being held high by none other than James Potter. His fluffy green Slytherin socks and the sparse leg hair upon his dry ashen legs, were left on display for everyone to see. You had wondered what provoked James into performing such a spell. But your question was left unanswered as your attention had gone to Snape being dropped back onto the ground and Lily Evans being called a “Filthy Mudblood.” by her old childhood best friend.
If anger meant seeing red, then James wasn’t seeing anything but of blind rage. “Don’t you dare call her that word you vile, disgusting creature.” There was an array of insults and cussing until Lily had brought him back to his senses. She told Snivellous to piss off and she waited until he was far enough away to round on James and unleash the anger that had been building inside her for years.
You couldn’t hear what she said due to the fact she had put a silencing charm on the area but based off what James whimpered and whined about while he dreamt in your bed with you for comfort, she had probably said something along the lines of “I would rather kill myself then ever be your girl, Potter.” Hindsight is a funny thing after all. You couldn’t help but feel a pang of your heart at the fact that his soul had latched onto Lily and not you, not even giving you a chance.
That was the night you realised that you would never get the guy. You will forever be condemned to loving James Potter. Your life will continue to be tormented with the possibilities that could've happened, the dreams that made you weep with despair and the everlasting longing and desire slowly encasing your heart until it breaks and shatters. James Potter was the light of your life, but he also caused the darkness that it left behind. James Potter was the sun, but now everything has gone dark.
‘I'm not a sadist, I enjoy just being able to be witness of the loneliness and fear  I abhor in case there isn't one  In case there isn't one’
After that night, after your tragic discovery had become the only thing running through your head. You had pathetically tried to recover the way you saw James before you fell for him. You tried for 2 long years with no luck. He still had your attention and heart, and yet he didn’t realise he had either. So, when the Marauders split for the night, you decided to ask for help.
You were suffocating with the grief and the mourning of what could've been. And you needed someone to help you breathe.
With Peter and Sirius headed to the dorm, James doing his Head-Boy patrols with Lily, it was only you and Remus left in the library, the map and the invisibility cloak set to the side until you both decided to leave. It turns out you didn’t even need to say anything because Remus knew exactly what was going through your head.
He saw the adoration in your eyes when you looked at your best friend, he saw the longing and upset you tried to hide when you heard him constantly talk about marrying Lily and having “Mini Potters” with her. No matter how well you tried, you couldn’t help but subtly display your inner turmoil.
And Remus saw it all.
“You're in love with James, aren't you, I see the way your eyes shine brighter, and your smile gets bigger when he enters the room. But he doesn’t love you back and you know it. I know you know it. And I know you’ve known it for years now. But I know what it's like, it feels like a constant weight on your chest and when they walk in the room, it disappears even if you try to hold it down, but then their presence, their joy, their affection for someone else, drains you, the energy you put in to try make them notice your love just gets brushed away until eventually it leaves you so empty that you become a hollow shell of the person that fell for them all that time ago.”
“I can't tell you how to get rid of it simply because I don’t know how to, but I can offer you some advice that I should've taken before it was too late. Leave, Leave them alone. Leave their life. It'll suck balls for the first while I'm sure but by staying you're degrading yourself. All your insecurities and the suffering you're facing now will pass. This is doomed love sweetheart. You're slowly breaking down. Leave. Before you can't piece yourself together again.”
And with that he leaves the library.
How are you supposed to leave his life? How are you supposed to keep him out of yours? The questions won't stop plaguing your mind, do you take Remus's advice and move on, or do you ignore him and feel your heart pull and crack every time you see him. The choice will be the most difficult one you will ever make and yet it’s the one that needs to be made.
You walk into potions the next day, you thought that it would help make a choice if you avoided him for a day as a trial. Instead of sitting in your normal seat, you walked over and sat beside a Ravenclaw who you believed was called Pandora.
The Marauders walked in and sat at their tables; you avoided James’ gaze when you looked over to you in confusion, but Remus diverted his attention elsewhere. You had inwardly thanked Remus for helping you out.
As the lesson went on everything got worse and your decision became clearer and clearer.
Since the year started, James had started to think twice about the pranks, he acted more mature in general and overall started becoming a man. All of this was for Lily of course. You couldn’t help but ask yourself if he would do the same thing for you if he chose you in the first place.
You were taking notice of all the little things that you're usually too delusional to notice.
How every time he made a joke or laughed; he would glance at Lily. You could feel your heart in your throat.
How he would wink and smirk at her when he got an answer correct. A tear forms in your eye.
How he would look over at her to make sure she understood the topic. Another tear forms.
How he whispers the answer in her ear if she doesn’t know it. Another one
How he shines with pride when Professor Slughorn appraises her. Another.
More tears form until you couldn’t stop them anymore. Thankfully the class was dismissed, and you quickly left before the tears fell and left a salty trail down your cheek. A representation of your life back then. Although in thinking that you can't help but notice that it didn’t get any better. Hindsight is a funny thing after all.

A snippet of Severus and Lily's life in Cokeworth in the summer of 1975. 2,713 words. READ ON AO3
-------------------------------------------
August, 1975 – Cokeworth, East Midlands
Like so many polluted, dismal summer days in Cokeworth, this one seems to stretch endlessly on as Sev drags himself wearily up Dorlcote Close towards Lily’s
Severus stops before her door, and hastily tries to smooth the long curtains of hair from his face before ringing the doorbell.
In the green frosted glass of the door he can see a shape approaching— it’s a little too wide to be Lily, and sure enough when the door opens it’s Rosalind Evans smiling up at him.
“Hiya Severus, you alright?” she says kindly. Rosalind Evans is always kind to him, one of the very few people in this shithole of a town who ever are.
“Yeah, thanks Mrs Evans,” he says shyly.
“Lily’s upstairs,” she says, peering at him. “I expect she hasn’t heard the doorbell over that silly pop music of hers… give a shout if you’d like me to bring up a sarnie, or anything.”
“Thanks, Mrs Evans,” Sev says again, eagerly resolving to do so. He might try to hide it from Lily but Mrs Evans’s keen eye never fails to spot how thin he is, how underfed he starts to become as soon as he gets back from Hogwarts for the holidays....

Okay so I have an idea for a writing if anyone is interested in writing it please just tag me when you do I’d love to read it.
So this is a Sirius Black x Evans! Reader or Remus Lupin x Evans! Reader. The reader is Lily’s little sister (by a year) and is a hufflepuff. She grew up being a trio with Lily and Severus and although Severus was in love with Lily, the reader had a crush on Severus for quite a while. Lily knew about her crush but always just comforted her knowing about her unrequited feelings.
Around the time of Lily and Snapes falling out (a few days before it) school had just started back for the readers 4th year. The reader spent most of her summer working extra to buy Severus some new clothes so he didn’t have to always wear the same ripped up clothes or his cloak. It took her all summer to get enough money and she confided in Lily telling her how excited she was to give him this gift.
She pulls Severus aside from the group of young death eaters he had started to associate with one day at lunch time to give him the clothes she had picked out and got for him. He coldly tells her no thanks I don’t want them. She insists kindly and tells him she worked all summer to be able to afford them, which she didn’t mind but really wanted him to accept the gift. He eventually snaps at her quite loudly and tells her something along the lines of “can’t you see I don’t want your stupid present. How desperate and pathetic can you be” to which the reader nods, quietly apologizes places the clothes on the ground in front of them tells him quietly while all are staring “I’m sorry, throw them away if you don’t want them” then walks off super quickly to cry somewhere quiet.
Sirius or Remus, who had had a major crush on her since 2nd year is the one to comfort her and make her smile and laugh. They become good friends as well as Remus or Sirius as she starts to heal after deciding not to be friends with Severus anymore, especially after Lily went to stand up for her a day or 2 later and that lead to their falling out as well where he screamed that she was a mudblood. Suprisingly enough, Sirius gets off his playboy stuff (or Remus starts to become more confident in himself) and a love blossoms between the reader and him where he treats her like there is no other girl in the world. She’s finally happy, she has a relationship like no other, good friendships where Lily and her are closer than ever and Remus or Sirius is her other bestfriend.
Around this time, Severus realizes not only did he mess up with Lily, but he feels really bad for the way he treated the reader because he sees how happy she is with Sirius or Remus but also any time James or Sirius go to bully him, she still tells them to stop and gives them just a certain look. Because of her, Sirius and James barely ever bully’s him anymore.
I’d say this paragraph ^ would be best in snapes pov but all the others from the readers. Would love some good fluff from moments of Sirius or Remus and reader falling in love. I’m a sucker for angst and fluff combined. Hopefully someone will be intrigued enough to write this 🫶🏻

TW: Angst - unrequited love and loss of friendship (it has a happy ending, though!)
It’s Severus Snape’s last year of Hogwarts. The thought makes him both relieved and sad.
He’s relieved as that means he will never see Potter and his friends ever again. Well, at least he hopes so.
However, he’s sad as that means he will never be able to see Lily Evans ever again.
Not only her, but also his best friend, Y/N Y/L/N - will they be able to keep in touch once they find jobs?
All these horrible years in this horrible school, one thing has made it tolerable - his friendship with Y/N.
She has always been there for him, especially when Lily left him. He’s really grateful for that.
He’s glad that he hasn’t screwed up another friendship.
He’s currently in the Potions classroom. He and Y/N are working together on brewing a potion.
However, Severus can’t seem to concentrate as he keeps hearing Lily’s laughter. It makes him angry yet sad as it’s not him who’s making her laugh, but Potter.
He sighs to himself. He loves the Gryffindor girl, but she clearly loves Potter. He has had many sleepless nights because of this.
His first friend, his first love.
He knows they can never be together as she doesn’t love him back. She probably never has.
Unbeknownst to him, somebody does love him. And she’s sitting right next to him, helping him with their potion.
Y/N sighs. She can’t keep hiding her feelings. She has to tell him, she has to tell him today as they will leave Hogwarts forever in a few days.
Y/N is extremely nervous - she has a feeling that he won’t like her back as he clearly likes Lily Evans.
But will he accept her unrequited love? Or will this ruin their friendship forever?
Once their lesson is done, Y/N and Severus are walking side by side as they are on their way to the common room.
She’s fidgeting with her fingers. How will he react?
She takes a deep breath. It’s now or never.
As they are by the entrance to the common room, Y/N clears her throat.
“Sev, can we talk?“ she asks nervously.
Stopping in his tracks, Severus turns around to face her.
“I have something to tell you… You see, I like you. More than a friend” she confesses, biting her lip nervously.
She waits for what feels like an eternity. He then laughs. He’s laughing at her.
“Very funny, Y/N” he says as he shakes his head, believing that it’s a joke.
“It’s not a joke, Sev. I do actually like you… I love you” she admits.
That surprises Severus. He then huffs. “Well, I don’t love you, Y/N. I only see you as a friend” he states.
She blinks away her tears. “I understand. You like Evans, don’t you?” she questions.
“Don’t speak of her! And that’s none of your business!” he snaps.
“I’m sorry, I just…” she quietly says before he interrupts her.
“You just… what? Wanted to know? Like I said, it’s none of your business!” he shouts.
Y/N takes a few steps back, trying to stop her tears in vain.
“I have never loved you, Y/N, and I never will. If you are this nosy, I’m glad we won’t be seeing each other any more” he states, crossing his arms.
Y/N blinks a few times, his words slowly registering.
“W-what are you saying?“ she asks, dreading his next words.
“I regret having you as a friend, friends don’t bother each other like this. And friends don’t fall for each other. I hope I’ll never see you again” he says coldly before entering the common room, leaving Y/N all alone sobbing on the floor.
He just ended their friendship, all because she was so foolish to fall in love with him.
She regrets confessing to him, she should never have told him. Now she lost her best friend.
They don’t speak to each other the following days, they don’t even look at each other.
On their last day of school, they don’t say goodbye.
________________________________
They haven’t seen nor spoken to each other for five years.
Severus is the new Potions Master of Hogwarts - he couldn’t escape this horrible school.
He sighs, ignoring the papers to grade in front of him. He can’t stop thinking about her.
He can’t stop thinking about Y/N.
He deeply regrets what he said to her. He regrets that he ended their friendship. Why did he do that?!
Not loving one back is one thing, but to end one’s friendship just because of some unrequited love?
He wonders if he will ever see her again, and if he does so, will she ever forgive him? She’s probably married and has children, just like Lily did.
He can’t tell what upsets him the most - Lily’s death or Y/N’s absence in his life?
He knows deep in his heart that it’s the last one, but he won’t admit it.
Well, he definitely isn’t looking forward to teaching Lily’s son when he turns eleven… He could truly use Y/N’s support.
Ever since rejecting her, he has come to a realisation.
He didn’t love Lily - he loved Y/N. Of course, he realised it once she was gone, but it was too late.
Now he will be alone forever until his last breath. If only he could get the chance to apologise, to tell how sorry he is…
The next day, Severus is in the Great Hall during breakfast. He isn’t even touching his food. He’s too busy thinking about Y/N, drowning in his sorrow.
He doesn’t notice the Headmaster rising from his seat to make an announcement.
“Good morning, children. I have some rather exciting news. You see, today we have a new History of Magic teacher as professor Binns has finally decided to retire” Dumbledore states.
All the students cheer to that. It’s no secret that everyone thinks Professor Binns is the most boring professor in Hogwarts’ entire history.
Severus huffs to himself. Great, instead of a boring ghost, they will get yet another obnoxious and irritating professor…
“Allow me to introduce - Professor Y/L/N” Dumbledore says as everybody claps.
The mention of the name immediately catches Severus’ attention. Professor Y/L/N? As in… Y/N Y/L/N?
As he looks towards the door, his heart skips a beat. The woman approaching the staff table is indeed Y/N Y/L/N.
Severus can’t believe it. Is he dreaming?
She sits down next to Sprout. However, when she quickly looks at her former best friend, she gives him a shy yet sad smile before immediately turning her attention to the Herbology teacher.
As they eat, Severus thinks of a plan. He has to apologise to her, let her know how much he has missed her.
If he doesn’t, he might actually go insane.
Once breakfast is over, Severus immediately follows Y/N. Before she can enter her classroom, he clears his throat.
“Hello, Y/N…” he says, feeling a bit awkward.
As she hears his voice, she immediately turns around to face him. “Severus… It’s so good to see you” she says, giving a small smile.
Severus blinks a few times. “It… is?” he questions. He expected her to be mad at him.
“Of course it is. I know you probably aren’t happy to see me, though” she slowly says.
He panics, quickly shaking his head. “That’s not true!” he blurts out.
He then takes a deep breath. It’s now or never.
“Y/N, I… I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. I truly regret what I said five years ago. I completely understand if you can never forgive me. Just know that I’ve realised… I’ve realised that all this time, I have loved you and not Lily Potter” he says, looking at the wall in order not to see her reaction.
He’s really confused when she hugs him.
“You… Aren’t you mad at me?” he questions, having tears in his eyes.
Y/N sighs, having tears in her eyes as well. “Honestly, I am. However, after all these years, I still love you” she admits.
That surprises Severus. “You do? I take it you never married nor had children?” he asks, looking hopeful.
Y/N laughs. “That’s right, I haven’t. Even though I’m still mad at you, I do forgive you… If you agree to go on a date with me” she states, looking into his eyes.
He sighs in relief as he hugs her tightly. “I definitely agree. Tomorrow at the Three Broomsticks?” he suggests.
She smiles at that. “It’s a date. By the way, you should probably hurry up to your classroom before anyone sees you” she says, referring to the sound of students approaching.
Growling, Severus nods. Before he leaves, he gently grabs her hand.
“Thank you, Y/N. And it really is so good to see you, I missed you so much” he says before kissing her cheek.
He then hurries away before the students can spot him.
Y/N can’t help but touch her cheek that he just kissed.
Smiling, Professor Y/L/N greets her students before entering her classroom.
It all ended happily after all - and Severus definitely doesn’t regret apologising nor confessing his love.

Halloween had always been a hard day of the year for Severus.
As a child he looked forward to the possibility of escaping the hells of his homelife for a few hours to go ‘trick or treating’. Yet every year without fail he was ridiculed and bullied by the older children on his street for the tattered, old, ill-fitting Halloween costumes his mother put together at the last minute for him. Not once did he made it home at the end of the night with his hard-earned bag of sweets before it was snatched out of his hand and scattered across the road, or stolen and gobbled up right in front of his eyes. But at the very least at least he didn’t have to ensure the violent wrath of his father for those few short hours.
Snape hoped things would improve when he finally got to attend Hogwarts but alas the shenanigans of the marauders almost mirrored that of the boys in his home town; forever making fun of his efforts to piece together a half decent looking costume.
By the time he was 13 Severus abandoned the idea of Halloween all together. Instead, he sat huddled up by a window somewhere, his nose buried in a book. Meanwhile the rest of his housemates would hold a small party in the dorm for the whole of Slytherin house, as did the rest of the houses he was told. But to Severus it simply became yet another day.
The date the 31st of October became insignificant in his mind, representing nothing more than another month’s end. That was until the year 1981.
31st October 1981 saw the death of both James Potter and Lily Evans; the only true friend Severus had ever managed to obtain. Although she had long since exiled him from her life due to some unforgivably harsh words on his part, he still wished they might mend their friendship in the future. However, any hopes of a reunion were shattered when the Dark Lord murdered her in seek of her son, in spite of Severus’ plea to spare her life.
From then on Halloween night marked the anniversary of her death. The death of a woman. A best friend. And the unrequited love of his life.
Almost a decade later Severus Snape still mourned the loss of his childhood friend as he once again sat alone on Halloween evening.
On the desk in front of him sat a small tattered polaroid style image of a young woman with fiery red hair and emerald green eyes. She moved about within the tiny frame, smiling and laughing to the photographer. Severus had kept the picture in his wallet since the day he took it, every now and then taking it out of its pouch to admire her. Her smile always had managed to cheer him up at the worst of times.
The potions master’s sombre reverie was abruptly disrupted by a timid but assertive knock on the door.
“Enter.” He ordered, tucking away the photograph into his inner robe pocket.
The door edged open to reveal a youthful looking Professor, dressed in a skin tight skeleton jumpsuit, her face half painted to match.
Severus recognised her, she often chatted with him in the staff room, though while she had worked alongside him for a couple of years now, he had never actually bothered to learn her name.
“Aren’t you going to join the celebrations.” The woman asked gingerly, stepping further into the room.
Severus opened his mouth ready to scold the woman for even daring to ask such a question. Then it occurred to him… this was the first time he had actually been asked.
All these years at Hogwarts; first as a student, now a professor, and not once had anyone ever thought to ask him if he would like to attend one of the many parties held throughout the castle.
“Why are you asking me this?” He replied, cautiously. “You’ve never bothered to before, no one has.”
“Professor Dumbledore told us not to. He says you’re… grieving. But I just thought, maybe you’d like the company.”
“You should have listened to Albus. Today is not a day to celebrate.”
The woman nodded in understanding, making a move to leave before working up the courage for one last word.
“You cannot grieve forever, Severus. You have to let go. If you don’t… you just might miss what’s sitting right under your nose.” She smiled sadly, starting to pull the door closed behind her.
“Wait.” Severus called after her, her words echoing through his mind. He paused for a moment, considering his decision.
“I will not attend tonight’s celebrations. But… ask me again next year, I may have changed my mind.” He stated simply.
The biggest smile spread across the witches’ face, her eyes lighting up with pure excitement.
Her joy was so infections even Severus couldn’t help flashing her a quick and rare smile before she finally disappeared from his office.
For the first time in his life, Severus Snape might just have a Happy Halloween.

The Other Her [S. Snape]
warnings - angst, unrequited love (oh the horror)  pairings - severus snape x reader synopsis - Severus Snape had two friends while he was at school. One, every body knew as Lily Evans. The other was you, an unknown student who wanted nothing more than to be noticed by your friend. You couldn’t help but compare yourself to the Gryffindor heartthrob every time he mentioned her name.  a/n - TikTok saw this idea first. Yes, I have a TikTok and yes I made a Severus Snape pov based on this song. But now I’m going to write it because I can do what I want. Thank you all for your patience with me!
~~~
You knew that being friends with Severus Snape meant being friends with Lily Evans. It was a prerequisite. Still, you found yourself shocked that even when she wasn’t around, her name was always brought up.
Sitting with Severus in the library as you attempted to study, you rolled your eyes as he mentioned her for the fifth time since she went to class. Your hand tightened around your pencil as you fought back the urge to lay him out flat if he said the word “Lily” one more time.
“The other day,” he started, staring down at the book he wasn’t really reading. “Lily and I-”
“Sev!” Your voice was strained as you attempted to keep yourself quiet. “I’m sorry, but I really have to revise for this exam. If I don’t pass....”
“You’re right, y/n.” He straightened himself and looked at the book with more determination. “I’m sorry.”
You sighed and tried to focus, but all you could think about was the way he smiled when he talked about her, or the way his eyes glimmered when they were together, or the way he barely laughed when they were apart.
It was impossible not to compare yourself to her. The way her long, red hair shone underneath the sunlight, her green eyes as kind as they were fierce. She stood up for others and she skipped through the halls. She smelled like cherry blossoms and summertime and cinnamon. Lily Evans was an incredibly talented witch, top of almost all of her classes, but she always had time to take care of her friends and dance in the rain.
She was everything a boy could possibly want.
You, in your own mind, were not.
Every time you passed her in the halls, she would wave and smile, knowing you as Severus’ other friend. She was proud of him for branching out and meeting knew people, but it was rare that she ever actually saw you. Her attention was almost always on Severus and his was always on hers.
I still remember the third of December  Me in your sweater you said it looked better on me than it did you only if you knew, how much I liked you
 A chill ran down your spine as you and Sev walked back from Hogsmeade, trudging through the snow. You had spilled Butterbeer on your sweater and then it was completely ruined when James Potter and Sirius Black decided that then was the best time to pick on your friend.
Defending Severus always meant putting yourself in the hot seat. You didn’t mind too much, but once your sweater was completely ruined by their onslaught of mud filled snowballs, not even your thick skin could warm you up enough.
“You want my sweater?” Sev asked, his arm brushing against yours as you walked.
“I’m alright, thank you,” you said to him and tried to smile. He raised an eyebrow in your direction and you sighed. “Fine.”
He pulled the green sweater off over his head and your heart skipped a beat. He loved that sweater. In the winter months, it was rare to see him without it.
“I’m sorry they ruined yours,” he said as he handed it over to you. You took it with grateful hands and a hidden smile before pulling it over your head.
Your heart thrummed in your chest as you walked beside him, enveloped in one of the few things he valued. And it smelled like him; the musk of the dungeons, the smell of spices and herbs and plants that he could name but you couldn’t, the slight twinge of burnt yarn from all his time spent bent over his cauldron flames.
Every part of you wanted to reach out and take his hand in yours, to show him that you were going to be there for him through everything, that you didn’t care where he came from or the things that had hurt him, that he was the most important person to you and you wanted nothing else than to spend the rest of your life with him.
But I watched your eyes as she walks by what a sight for sore eyes brighter than the blue sky she’s got you mesmerized
You thought Lily had gone home for the winter. She had a place to go in the winter months, a family to spend the Christmas holidays with. You and Sev did not. You spent your weeks at the school, revising for class, going to Hogsmeade, practicing potions. It was the time you valued most because Lily wasn’t there and Sev didn’t seem overcome by her absence.
But apparently not this winter.
“There’s Lily!” Sev said as you sat in the Great Hall. You whipped your head around to see the red-head, laughing with one of her friends. Your smile dropped at the sight of her.
“I...I didn’t know she was staying,” you said.
“Me neither,” Sev replied and you could hear his smile in his voice.
“She looks good.” You finally looked back at him and elbowed him gently. He tips of his cheeks reddened slightly and your stomach churned. He knew you knew that he liked her and you knew that if you didn’t tease him about it, he would know that you liked him, so you played along.
“She always looks good,” he muttered to himself, trying to look like he wasn’t paying attention.
“Yeah.” You looked away from him and back at Lily once again.
while I die
You were just being stupid. That’s what you told yourself. There was no reason to ruin a perfectly good friendship with Severus, your only friendship, actually, just because you got butterflies every time he looked your way or you felt your pulse quicken every time his hand brushed yours when you walked side by side. That was just the hormones. You’d be over it in a few months and everything would go back to the way it was.
So, why did it hurt so much? Why did you stay awake at night, staring blankly at the drapes above your head while sleep evaded you? Why did tears run from your eyes no matter how hard you fought them back?
You fell asleep to the dull ache of a knife being driven deeper and deeper into your chest.
You were just being stupid.
Watch as she stands with her holding your hand Put your arm 'round her shoulder, now I'm getting colder
You tightened your jaw to the point where it was almost painful. Sitting across the courtyard, a book in your hand, you watched as Severus hoisted Lily into the air. Both of them laughed loudly, as if sharing a secret together that you would never know.
It killed you inside because you knew she didn’t like him in any way other than a friend and he loved her. And he didn’t like you in any way other than a friend and you loved him.
A vicious cycle. No one would come out on top.
Still, the stone bench was colder when you were alone.
But how could I hate her? She's such an angel
There was something about Lily that made everyone love her. And that something was rather simple; she was kind. There was not a single soul that she did not pour her love and affection into.
The times she talked to you even she listened intently. She asked questions about your studies and your home life and if things were going better than they were the last time you talked. It never felt like small talk with your best friend’s best friend. It was almost as if she actually cared.
And she actually cared for everyone she came across.  Every first year, every Slytherin, every house elf, every teacher, every creature.
The only time you didn’t see her smiling was when she was telling someone off for picking on Sev or performing a rather powerful hex.
Aside from being the kindest person you had ever laid eyes on, she was equally as powerful of a witch. There was no one you knew who knew their way around a wand as well as Lily. Even some of the professors seemed to be outmatched by her. It was frustrating and awe inspiring at the same time so see her cast spells so naturally, so casually, when you struggled to even produce some of the simpler spells.
Even then, Lily was willing to help you out. She took time out of her busy day to help tutor you. The grades you had now were because of her and her dedication to you.
How could you possible hate her when she was such a kind and wonderful person?
But then again, kinda wish she were dead
You couldn’t help but think that your life would be so much easier without her in it. If she had just been a normal muggle, every thing would have been different. She wouldn’t have run into Sev, she wouldn’t have started talking to him, she wouldn’t have come to Hogwarts. Everything would be fine and he would be yours.
But there she was, laughing and happy and just all around a wonderful person. And Sev was still in love with her.
You hated her and you hated yourself for it.
why would you ever kiss me? I’m not even half as pretty
It was weird when the three of you went out to Hogsmeade together. This time in particular. Sev was wearing his favorite green sweater again and Lily was wearing her favorite pair of boots that made her legs look longer. Her beautiful red hair was up in a ponytail, pieces framing her face. The snow on the ground somehow made her green eyes greener.
And there you were, walking a few paces behind the, silent. Sev elbowed her in the side as she laughed. You weren’t surprised when you finally got him to admit he liked her. Sure, you had already known about it for so long, but the confirmation still hurt.
Why wouldn’t he like her? With her long hair and her green eyes and her brilliant smile, you would be surprised if half the school wasn’t in love with her.
You looked nothing like her. Your hair was unruly and always messy and you never knew what to do with it. Your eyes didn’t shine and glimmer and glow in the light like hers did. Your smile wasn’t easy and perfect and wonderful. Everything that she had, you didn’t have.
It made you feel shallow to care so deeply about looks, but you couldn’t help yourself.
‘It’s not her fault she’s beautiful,’ you told yourself as you watched the two of them walk ahead. ‘I can’t hate her just because she’s prettier than me. It’s not her fault and it’s not mine.’
You gave her your sweater It's just polyester But you like her better
Walking out of Honeydukes with a bag full of candy, you felt your heart drop out of your chest and into your stomach.
Sev was pulling off his sweater and handing it off to Lily, who stood there with a smile as she shivered. Tears gathered in your eyes, biting your skin as the cold air blew against them. That was the one thing you had to hold onto, that he had given you his most beloved sweater that one day in the cold. But now she was wearing it too and, Merlin’s Beard, the oversized green sweater looked better on her than it ever would you.
You walked up to them as you shook away your tears. You could cry about it later. For now, you had to keep your wits about you.
“Thank you, Sev,” she said, pulling on the long sleeves to cover her trembling hands.
“Of course,” he replied with his usual sheepish smile.
“I’ll give it back once we get to the castle.”
“Keep it,” he said. Your heart plummeted even further. “Looks better on you than anyone else.”
You couldn’t stand around any longer. You had to get out before your emotions took you over completely. Dropping the bag of sweets into the snow, you turned around and pushed your way through the crowd of students. As soon as your back was to them, the tears in your eyes overcame your willpower and you started to cry.
Arms crossed and head down, you ignored Lily and Sev calling your name, hoping beyond hope to just disappear into the crowd before either of them could catch up to you.
You walked back to the castle by yourself, hoping to find some place to be alone and just let it all out. If you cried about it now, maybe all your feelings would leave with your tears and you wouldn’t like him anymore and you could just be his friend without wanting to hold his hand all the time.
“It’s just a stupid sweater,” you whispered to yourself as you hid in a bathroom stall. “Just a stupid sweater.”
No matter how many times you repeated those words to yourself, you still couldn’t stand to look either of them in the face. You knew Sev’s schedule well enough to know how to avoid him between classes. You didn’t know where Lily would be at any given time of the day, but whispers came before her and followed after her, so it was pretty easy to tell when she was coming your way. It was easy enough to skip meals and sneak into the kitchens to grab something every now and again.
It was almost a week later that you finally accidentally ran into Sev on your way to class.
“Sorry!” You said before even realizing who it was.
“y/n!”
You snapped your head up, eyes wide with fear at the sight of him. You spun around quickly to run in the other direction, but he reached a hand out to grab hold of your wrist. When he turned you around to face him, your heart began to pound wildly in your chest, roaring like an ocean in your ears.
“What’s been up with you?” He asked. “You’ve been avoiding me for days.”
“I have to go to class,” you said hurriedly, trying to step around him. He moved in front of you again.
“Talk to me, y/n.”
“There’s nothing to talk about.”
“Then why are you avoiding me? Lily and I are worried-”
“I don’t want to talk about her.” Your voice deepened, dangerously low. Sev looked taken aback.
“Did she do something to you? I’ll talk to her. I’m sure she didn’t mean to-”
“You gave her your sweater,” you said finally. You screwed your eyes shut tight so you didn’t have to look at the way he reacted. It felt stupid and saying it out loud sounded stupid, but it still hurt all the same.
“It’s just a sweater,” he said. You opened your eyes and a wave of calm suddenly passed over you. You shook your head before looking down at your hands.
“You know it’s not just a sweater, Sev. That’s your favorite sweater and you gave it to her like it was nothing.”
“You’ve been ignoring me because I gave her my sweater?” It was clear that he wasn’t understanding.
“I’ve been ignoring you because I’ve been in love with you for months and you’re too thick to notice because you’ve only got eyes for her and I just want to be rid of these feelings so we can go back to being friends, alright?”
Your voice rose without you meaning to. You were sick of dancing around it. You just needed him to know so maybe you could let it go.
By the look in his eyes, you could tell that he hadn’t even thought of the possibility. His cheeks tinted red, his mouth parted in confusion and shock. You let out a bitter laugh as you watched the ground carefully.
“Make sense to you now?”
“y/n, I-”
“I really need to get to class,” you told him, stepping around him again. This time, he didn’t try to stop you.
“Can we talk about this later?”
“I’d rather not.”
“I don’t want to lose my best friend.”
You watched him carefully, the way his gaze was fixed on the floor, how his hands tensed at his side, how his lips twitched ever so slightly. You gave him your best, soft smile, knowing that it compared nothing to Lily’s.
“You won’t,” you said finally. With that, you turned and walked to your class, feeling worse than you had the night before. Because now you couldn’t avoid them anymore, which meant you couldn’t avoid your feelings anymore. Now you had to be his friend despite him knowing how you felt and every time the three of you were around each other, the fact of your feelings would hang around in the air like weight against all of your shoulders. Everything was going to change.
I wish I were Heather
Maybe you didn’t want Lily dead. That would make Sev inconsolable. He would never recover. Maybe there was something else you wanted. Some other way, in some made up world, that you could be the one that he loved. If you were Lily, if you had been Lily from day one, Sev would love you then.
But you didn’t want to be Lily either. She got too much attention. You didn’t need everyone else’s attention, just his. You didn’t want to be Lily, but you wanted to be where she was in his heart. Whatever piece of his soul was tied so tightly to hers, you wanted that place. And there was no way you were ever going to get it.
Severus Snape x Reader - Look At Me (2/2)
tag list: @accio-boys @sweet-pinkrose @xxcharliecakesxx
Previously:
Your hurt and anxiety was melting away as Severus stood close, stroking your cheek gently as your tears subsided. You understood what unrequited feelings could do to a person. If he cared for Lily like you cared for him, you were sure that he was devastated they were no longer friends. You would stick by him though, and maybe one day he’d look at you like he looked at her.
You looked over at the students as they swayed on the dance floor, celebrating the triwizard tournament as the visiting schools joined in the festivities of the yule ball. It was good to see everyone having so much fun. This was your first year as a professor and it had given you the fulfillment you had been seeking for so long. Looking at the kids it reminded you of your own yule ball.
“We might as well go together,” Severus had said as you lounged in the library, tucked away from the rest of the students as you thumbed through your homework.
“What are you going on about?” You asked as you snapped back to the present. Being around Severus had been easier, your feelings weren’t gone but you had both found a happy medium. He didn’t try to embarrass you too much and you didn’t mention how you felt.
“The yule ball,” He said easily as if it hadn’t been something you had been anticipating and dreaming of all year. You wished he wouldn’t sound so nonchalant about it. You knew from the tone of his voice that it was nothing to him and this was as easy to him as asking if you would let him borrow a pencil.
“What if someone wants to go with me because they like me?”
“Would you say yes?” Severus asked, eye quirked, already knowing the answer.
Of course you wouldn’t. Severus Snape was asking you to the ball and this was his last year at Hogwarts. How could you say no to him no matter who else asked you?
“You tosser,” You grumbled and Severus smiled. He was glad you didn’t seem to hold him above being a jerk. He knew it might not be fair but he didn’t tolerate anyone other than you so it seemed simple that he asked you. Severus knew how you felt but he knew you wouldn’t talk about it. He was grateful for that. Severus still loved Lily even if he told himself he hated every little thing about her.
“I’ll take that as a yes,” He smirked.
Two weeks later you were dressed in a ravenclaw blue gown and Severus arrived in a neat suit, a matching tie. Blue complimented him.
His hands had been warm on your hips as you two swayed and he let himself give you a compliment. You were pretty, that was just a fact. Severus could appreciate beauty and you had it. From everything to your sparkling eyes to your dopey smile. He might not feel the same but he did care for you. You had ended up being a very good friend to have. Who knew?
“You look handsome,” You had responded back and he grinned down at you.
“I suppose I shouldn’t say ‘you too’,” You snickered at his attempt at a joke.
The night turned for the worst however, Severus being overcome by the green monster that had plagued him all last year, continuing into this one. Lily Evans was stunning and James Potter was just as impressive beside her. It couldn’t be denied by anyone they looked lovely together, more than that they looked happy. A kind of happy no one could touch or fathom. Even Severus couldn’t deny it and that was one of his most practiced skills.
Lily caught his eye and in a moment of bitterness he looked back to you and pressed his lips to yours in a stiff kiss that you knew meant nothing to him and everything to you. You felt his emotions flow through you. Anger and jealousy and loss.
“I can’t,” You pushed him away, eyes already misting over. You couldn’t do this anymore. You couldn’t be Severus’ second choice any time he missed Lily and wanted a distraction. “Have a good night Sev,” You said, leaving the great hall in a rush as he stared after you, that familiar guilt he always felt when he realized he had hurt you again.
You had cried your eyes out all night and he had stayed awake, Lily on his mind instead of you. The next day you had pretended nothing had happened.It was back to talking of school and finals and anything else about what he’d done and how you’d felt about it. You loved Severus but he could be very selfish.
Looking around and spotting him sitting at the lengthy table, you were surprised to find that he was indeed looking your way. You smiled slightly and gave him a wave. He nodded in your direction, expression stern but not unwelcoming. You made your way to him, sitting beside him.
“You look like you’re having a blast,” You teased.
“Indubitably,” He said dryly but you managed to force him into a smile that had always managed to look more like a grimace now matter what he was feeling. To you, he still looked like the boy you had known. His hair was longer though, the angle of his jaw sharp as the hook of his nose but still terribly handsome.
You both fell into a silence that left you nervous.
“You never could sit still if you weren’t saying something,” He mentioned and you rolled your eyes, a smile easily making it’s way onto your face.
That is one Severus had always appreciated about you. You smiled freely no matter what. He felt after losing Lily that he couldn’t do that but you, facing him time after time after being hurt more than once, still managed to smile like nothing in the world was wrong. He supposed he owed you an apology.
“Y/N, I must say something,” Severus lowered his voice and you leaned forward to hear him above the chatter and joy of the students. “I’ve been unfair to you,” He started, trying to articulate his words in a way that wouldn’t ultimately leave you wounded again.
“Severus, we were children I don’t hold anything against you,” You said easily but it didn’t ease his conscience.
“I know you don’t and it’s why I was-” Severus paused. He never was one for explaining his feelings. “I was lucky that you still continued to be my friend despite all I did to hurt you. I never considered your feelings and that was wrong of me, I wish for us to become well acquainted again, like we used to be,”
Attachment could be a fickle and silly thing but Severus knew he never had to question it when it came to you. You were loyal and giving and kind. You forgave too easily and loved too much but it was admirable. In anyone else he would find it a fault, silly and dangerous, but he couldn’t find any fault in you at this moment. You had grown to be a beautiful woman as he knew you would.
“Of course Sev,” You grinned, hand resting on top of his. “You never stopped being my friend, by the way.” You mentioned. “We just haven’t seen one another for some time, that’s all.” He wondered how it could be so easy for you to let your past scars heal. Or maybe it wasn’t easy, maybe it was the forgiveness that helped the scars heal even if it still hurt.
“Come,” He said, standing. “Let me make up for a past wrong,” Severus extended his hand to yours and he thought maybe his hardened heart had thumped a bit strong in his chest as you grinned up at him, taking his hand and letting him lead you in a dance.
Severus Snape had been hurting for far too long because he was looking to the past. Maybe now, with you giving him another chance, he could look to the future by looking at you. It was about time he noticed you for all you were.
Protego Pt 3 - Half
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Posting Pt 3 of this mini series. hope you like it and do let me know what you think if you are so inclined. More fun to come with this era and group. All I’m posting today to let everyone enjoy. :)
“Full up.” A twiggy shaggy brown haired boy said. He'd slid between the open train car door. Ruining the plan both James and Sirius made. Bent on being the one to tussle their way to sharing the ride with those redheads. In front of their faces, both boys willing to sit on the floor if they had to, the glass windowed door was shut and locked sending them elsewhere. Along the way to actually trade names and see who the fellow loser belonged to.
Right around the cunning teen turned. Lips parted in a successful puff of air to help a grin form in greeting the twin girls. Both partly hidden behind the dark haired boy, that had moved to block them in the door scuffle. “Remus,” he spoke first to the other shaggy sandy haired boy nearest to the window the trio looked to in confusion. Hand extended, they began a brief clasp more than a shake. Each greeting the familiar face during the contact returned then dropped. Enabling the now named Remus to fix his baggy cardigan around himself to sit down.
“Junior,” the part of his name spoken had the instigator smirk. As it revealed Remus had only heard what the former was called by his father inside the Ministry.
“Glad to see a familiar face.” Next his hand was offered to the round glasses, corduroy and tweed clad boy on the other side of Remus. “Diggory, right?”
“Yes, Amos.” The bowl hair cut around this new boy's face shifted mid nod. Then stilled in a quizzical look at the taller boy, whose hand Amos released. “But your name isn’t Junior? Right?”
“Barty." Barty replied and right away turned his body to reach around Severus to offer his hand right to Jewels. “Crouch Jr. Pleasure to meet you.” Through the glass barrier behind him more slow passing teens stole their own glances inside the car. Many already had peered inside of on their way past, all eager to see what those before them had noticed and had to keep stealing partly obstructed looks back at once passed.
“Jewelia Evans,” the girl replied in an uncertain tone to the timid offer of her hand. Reluctant to take his hand as if he was a snarling dog, unable to take her eyes off his direct stare.
“Our dads work together in the Ministry, different fields, er, Remus Lupin and Amos Diggory.” Right away his eyes snapped to Lily at the pull of the hand out of his so Jewels could cling it to her belly, and blindly ensure it was intact still by means of her spare hand. “You are?” Again his eyes darted to Jewels and back again.
When Barty's eyes were off her Jewels looked to Remus in the flinch of a wave her way she returned. Not noticing the slip of her natural dead on purple eyes Amos fixated on their alluring green shade. Until they fell on his grinning self and became purple to Remus’ new green view.
“Lily Evans,” the sister said proudly, even from behind Severus. Smiling as she did so mid subtle stretch to straighten up her posture in doing so.
Off Jewels Barty's eyes snapped to Severus, still unmoved from his place as a wall blocking Lily whose hand was taken next. “Brother? Triplets are rare here.”
“Neighbor,” Severus answered flatly. Still staring directly in the shared brown eyed half curious half protective staring contest.
“Sevy,” Jewels softly uttered in a poke to her best friend’s arm that broke the stare as both looked her way.
“Eyes,” Lily sharply muttered. Bumping her body into her sister to force them both onto the seat to help hide the shift back to look identical to Lily. Avoiding once again being the one to stir up whispers about the pair. To stop the first try to call them freaks and ruin their chances to make friends here. Gaze fixed upon the floor Jewels sat. Lost to focus of her mind on every inch of her body to get control again after being startled into the reveal. A look of fear glint across her face in doing so. A look Remus felt stab at his chest from a fellow secret keeper.
“Severus Snape.” He drew focus of Barty and Amos back onto himself in declaring his name and tightening the grip on the hand still locked in Barty's. A move that had the other half of the newly introduced pair smirk back at him.
“There’s a fifth year,” calmly Remus spoke. Those now emerald eyes landed on him to the knock of his weathered shoe into her new polished pair, “can do that with his eyes.” the rest of the sentence spoken in a gesture of a finger to both of his own blue pair.
Awkward and curious a grin tugged onto Jewelia’s face to ask softly, “He can?”
Remus nodded, “Maybe you’ll be sorted to his house. I’ll point him out.”
Lily smiled, “Can’t wait to be sorted. Make new friends.” Settling better into her seat to make room for Jewelia she’d noticed was pinned into the corner of the booth and the wall in the hasty plop to sit down.
Severus broke the contact first and sighed in lowering himself down to sit beside the girl he loved. Still watching as Barty claimed his seat beside Amos, who had now righted his own clearly hand me down jacket around his sticky self. “Where do your parents work?” Barty again was looking right at Jewels, who tried not to blush at being the focus of this odd boy’s attention. As she’s usually be forgotten beside Lily back home. “Haven’t seen you about. Don’t sound from the North or anywhere near the isles.”
“Uh, Daddy works in Tax Law, Mummy is a Pet Groomer on the side.”
That had Barty narrow his eyes and Severus state the obvious, “Their parents are Muggles.”
And between them Barty looked and let out a disbelieving chuckle, “No, you can’t be serious.” Unable to believe one with such a magical  and inherited allure affecting the attentions of so many could come from mere Muggles.
“That, is what our parents do.” Jewels said haltingly.
“The Prefect sent to speak with us said Muggle-Borns are quite common.” Lily argued to help break any focus off her sister who might let slip another reveal of her eyes to the staring boys.
“Barty be nice,” Remus interjected and had Barty look his way and scoff.
“I am being,” he looked back to Jewels saying, “I’m not insulting you. Just, caught me off guard.” And he looked to Severus asking, “Muggle-Born too?”
“My mother is a Witch.” Severus sighed and relented more, “Works in a book editing company. My father has many seasonal trades.”
“Where was your mother sorted?” Barty asked with a smile, “Mine were Slytherin and Gryffindor. Mum broke out her red and gold scarf today.” Adding a chuckle to how happy she seemed in the send off as the train began to let off a whistle and jerked from its stationary place to leave the platform.
“Slytherin.”
“Take it she’s not the Snape?” Barty asked with brow raised.
“Eileen Prince,” Severus answered and the boy grinned.
“Kicked my dad out of the dorm once, literally. Never let’s go of a reaction like that.” Over the sisters he looked again and spoke with the boys to his right next, “Where your parents after for you two?”
Remus answered flatly, “Anywhere but the forest.” And Barty chuckled to the turn of Remus’ eyes to the window to avoid thoughts on being sorted, and how he would keep his other side to himself. Amos spoke up on his own parents' hopes. Then Barty dove into sharing more on the houses for the girls and broke out stories he’d heard from older friends, relatives and his parents about the school. The start of a gap bridging conversation, that more than once would lure out slips of those same color changing eyes on the very giddy Jewels. Who hoped to be making friends that could last for the next seven years. Every detail memorized to be written down later in both their diaries and letters home.
 .
 “Who are you?” Bellatrix Lestrange asked Jewels. Who'd just apologized for bumping into her arm on the way to the numerous first years in a swarmed mess to be lined up for the boat ride ahead.
“Jewelia Evans,” she replied. Almost sounding like a question at the break in her voice to the intently staring girl who had noticed those same eyes right away.
“Be nice to the Muggle-Born Bella.” Barty spoke up as he came to take Jewelia’s side. Kindly patting the startled redhead’s back to comfort and show support.
“Don’t lie to me, Crouch.” Bellatrix uttered. And when he stepped away from Jewels he led the darker haired witch aside. To stop what he knew could only escalate and make the Muggle raised girl more uncomfortable.
“Right up to the front,” Lily urged and tugged both sister and Severus along into view of Rubeus Hagrid. The groundskeeper who helped the trio into a boat one at a time. Every inch of his half giant frame ready to catch any child with uncertain footing.
“Why are we taking boats?” Jewels whispered to Severus to Lily’s settle into the front seat of the boat. The question made Rubeus smile and offer his hand next to her.
“Never quite got a response myself my first year. For the view, my guess.” His reply accented with a chuckle.
 .
 “Gryffindor!” Proud Lily was the first of the trio sorted. And to the shock of everyone there the next child with the nearest birthday was called. Not Jewels who smiled at the sister she assumed to be joining at the clapping table soon. A belief shared by the boy who went to take a seat at the same table. Leaving room for the identical sister between him and Lily for that assumption.
“Slytherin.” Severus off his turn at the stool was watched by the still lingering sister. Her being whispered about by many throughout the crowd to be sorted and those at their assigned tables. Without a glance back on his path to the clapping table to take up the seat beside a soon to be named, dual hair colored, Narcissa Black.
Barty had even gotten sorted. And gave the anxious girl a pat on the arm on his way towards his seat at the Slytherin table. Once there he asked the girls beside Severus to kindly scoot over so he could sit down. All so he could ask the best friend, “Why wasn’t Jewelia called after Lily?”
“Jewels was adopted.” The answer dawned on Barty and those within earshot at the much welcomed explanation.
“Oh that clears it all up,” and Barty let out a relieved chuckle, “No Muggle could pull that off.” Instantly luring Severus to look directly at him. Instead of James Potter and Sirius Black who had been inching closer to the girl left behind Remus had been keeping equally anxious company in their wait.
“Hmm,” three minutes the sorting hat sat silent atop her head. No longer in deep reflection but merely in awe at the odd slew of tongue twisters Jewelia had been reciting in her mind to not be a multicolored mess right now in front of the entire student body and staff at the wait for where she belonged.
“Ahem.” Minerva spoke up and the hat opened its cloth fold eyes.
“Yes Minerva?” It replied and arched its head to peer at the Professor who had moved closer to see if she might help move things along.
“Her house?” Minerva asked.
“Aha, yes, a fine adornment for Ravenclaw. Fair penchant for tongue twisters to boot.” Minerva smiled in relief to the eruption of noise from the silver and blue adorned table. Every one of them more than glad to make room for the girl who stumped the hat for so long. Relief swelled and spilled violently throughout the hall and crowd just to leave Jewels so far from Lily and Severus.
“Sirius Black.” The name that came next, another name the girl didn’t recognize out of those left. One by one to be called while she was at a table filled entirely with strangers to her. Friendly but strangers no less.
Through the crowd during the final few, Remus by her was spotted. He drew her focus to a grey feather embroidered black jacket wearing teen seated a bit farther down the Ravenclaw table. To the older teen from his eyes Remus' fingers moved. Right away her lips parted in remembering the fact that had many at her table check between the first years and warn the fifth year of being talked about.
Ted Tonks, who she’d later be able to meet when he helped to guide her and the other first years to their tower. One of the Prefects she’d have ample time to build up the nerve to talk to. Right when his eyes landed on the overly quiet first year he assumed to be nervous he urged his eyes to flicker a few colors mid sudden sprout of his natural ears into those of a bear around his black pointed hat, to try and make her smile. The shock of which had her eyes instantly change to purple widening his smile. Right to her glass she looked so he could have an angle of her eyes that looked green and he let out a chuckle. Forcing his ears and hair back to normal. He straightened up on his seat to share with his friends around him the obvious reason why he was pointed out to her.
Mentally he made note to talk to the girl even if he had to wait for the walk up to the tower to do so. Let her know that even without her sister to room with she wasn’t alone. Sure he was the only one able to change like her he knew of. But amongst the other female student body there were those the boys could feel an unyielding pull to gawk at and shadow to be in their company. Just as soon as she stopped focusing on her sister too engrossed in conversation of the two boys who tried to get inside the train car earlier.
Much like her sister Bellatrix, Andromeda Black, beside her boyfriend Ted, kept a lingering stare at the first year who seemed to have Slytherin's eyes. Marking them as relations of a most perplexing variety if she was born from a pair of Muggles. Yet somehow of stronger connection than the Black line to have inherited that one feature. Those questions would have to wait though as the new girl would be early to bed to rest for the first day of classes and the pair of Prefects were off to their first meeting of the year.
 *.*.* Jewels *.*.*
 On break between Transfigurations and lunch the first years were let loose to roam the halls at their fancy. Jewelia and Severus walked alone, hoping to find a sunny place to sit and wait as Lily was halls away having a word with the Potions Professor on a weird reaction her hand had to an ingredient to see if it needed a quick remedy or not.
Severus broke the focus she had on more students whispering and nodding her way from the other end of the corridor by saying, “The moody one came down to our dorm last night. Has a cousin in the room across from mine, let him in and gave him a blanket for the couch in the common room.” Jewelia’s brow rose at the curious notion of the perplexing Sirius Black. The boy who seemed to be gaining popularity amongst Gryffindors thanks to his new friend James Potter. A clearly well off Pure-Blood from a family nearly as old as the Black Family. The pair now firm in a group of four boys including curiously enough Remus. The boy who kept to himself nearly as much as she did, somehow tangled up with the pompous Potter Lily now mentioned daily in his tries to get to know her better. “Apparently not all is going swimmingly between the pair.”
Clearly Jewels was on edge, or so he heard, having checked in with a few older Ravenclaw students who said the young eye grabbing co-ed was not being the most talkative since being split from Lily and himself. Even more so when she would take spare time each night after curfew to write to another mysterious sister not attending here others had bets on what magical school she had been accepted at if not here.
And just like a bad egg being stepped on a voice like a foul scent filled the air of the space announcing James Potter here to spoil the assumed calm afternoon. “Mind the balloons Snivellus, wouldn’t want to spoil your only tailored piece of clothing to your pitiful name.” James mocked aloud mid explosion of a balloon charm he cast that coated Severus in colored powder reeking of papaya.
A crack of a broken nose followed and the smug peacock dropped to a hard fist colliding with his face by none other than the now red and gold eyed glowing girl in love with the target of said prank. Bloody handed Jewels stood glaring at the prankster who enraged her. Goading cackles and noises from the students milling by muffled in her ears as her body stood ready to hit him again if he went for his dropped wand. That hand in a fist while her other arm remained locked around her books she hoped to keep in good order for their price for years to come. But not a moment later a startling authoritative shout drew a visible flinch from several.
“EVANS!” Minerva shouted in a determined stride that way. Under the ruckus the sound of Jewels’ books she let free to hide and flee muffled, same as the disappointed sigh from Severus, who bent to collect them to join his own on his way to find where she had raced off to. Unnoticed by Sirius’ wide eyes that followed the clap of hands over the beginnings of a beak on Jewels’ face and her race away. “Soon as you find her send her to my office!” Minerva instructed.
Sirius moved past bloody nosed James to ask the flustered Professor en route to speak to said groaning boy bent forward collapsed onto the stone floor clutching at his throbbing face, “Muggle-Born, right?”
“I beg your pardon, Sirius?” she asked ticking her brow upwards.
“Jewels, she’s supposed to be Muggle-Born?” He clarified the question that nearly everyone of well off lines had asked themselves. A puzzle in human form, showing traits of beings that could not be found ever in Muggle lines causing many to insist they heard from others Severus himself said she was in fact adopted both solving and not solving the perplexing puzzle.
“I don’t rightly see the worth-,” she tried to say but was cut off.
“I think she’s half Veela.” He said dropping the Professor’s jaw. In a pinch of fingers mid tug of that hand away from his lips he motioned a hand to elaborate his point, “Beak, and she glows, and the temper.”
Minerva huffed. Just now realizing the most logical reason why the young girl had been coming off possibly as owner of an unnamed chip on her shoulder requiring spare effort. “That, is a possibility.”
He nodded and said, “I’ll find her a book on it.” Order free he made his way to the library leaving behind James and lanky Remus, the latter leaned against a wall snickering at the sudden change of goals in Sirius. All at this proof of their week long debate on why Jewels seemed to be unmistakably irresistible to look away from. Peter alone was the one to help guide James to the Hospital Wing.
.
Softly Sirius cleared his throat on the other side of the bathroom Jewels was pretending to not be inside of. With his arm nudged the door open enough to levitate the book inside. “I’m sending a book in, don’t damage it or anything. Librarian Pince will raze the school to the ground if her collection is damaged. Thought you might need a few answers.”
Before he guessed it would the door opened and his wide eyed self peered on at the pink cheeked girl with still golden pupils, who held the open book facing him to show what could only be named as an inhuman creature. Two legged but with wings and a bird head to match the talon ended feet and sharply clawed thick knuckled fingers of the rage filled beast. “I am not-,”
“That’s a full Veela,” he blurted out. Then gestured at the stuffed miniature cow shaped stool at his side that she looked to then back up at him again, making him sigh and step aside to reveal a chair with legs that didn’t match in length. “I’m still only able to make wobbly chairs, that’s got four even legs.”
Softly she huffed and eased out of the door to plop down on the cushioned animal stool in demand of answers. Down onto his chair he lowered, extending the plant of his feet at the tilt of the chair to one side he ignored the motion to explain this fuller to the girl who had absolutely no clue what had been happening to her. “Half Veela don’t fully change like that, it, depends on the family line, some countries have different traits. I think it’s twelve chapters in, talks about half Veela. They do have powders for the glow, perfumes for the allure of others, and some shops do have charms to help, with the,” his hand rose to gesture out of his mouth like a beak just making her bashfully cover her mouth with a hand.
“I didn’t mean it, like that,” onto her shoulder his hand moved. “It’s a nice beak, at least the base of it, haven’t seen it full on yet.” At him her eyes glared and he choked out a laugh and cleared his throat again. “James, he can be like my Mum sometimes. Just a light switch. Sudden ignition, no reasoning required. You can’t,” he said and felt his voice taper off in the lock of his eyes on hers to just stare at the eyes so unlike any half Veela line he’d heard of before, but rang close to his own.
The shove into his arm that had him rock unsteadily on his seat snapped his thoughts back to the present. “Stop doing that, everyone in my dorm already stares at me.” Muddled in self pity and uncertainty of what to do with the name of this supposed condition of hers she dropped her eyes to the book now open on her lap. Freeing a full look at the roots of her hair that began to bleed out lime green.
“You’re a Morpher too!” Up at him again her eyes snapped, this was her turn to be the wide eyed one. “Super rare mixture! No wonder the reaction is so reflexive when you get upset!”
“What?” she asked squeaked. Up he stood gesturing his wand, pulled from his pocket, at the cow stool that levitated behind him to head for the library not far away from this rarely used bathroom. “I can walk…” she stammered out with hands and feet locked on the stool to not fall off at the same time.
“Best you stay on the stool or you might hit someone again. Professor wants to talk to you still you know, trouble maker you.” He joked, turning his head back to flash her a quick wink trying to calm her down in the wait of this newly added fact.
But at the end of the proper aisle inside the library he helped her down to share the system to her organizing the rows on various conditions that were inherited through magical lines. “Metamorphmagus. Gobblety gook word for shape shifters. Your body hits a rage and that kicks off to fill out what the blood knows to be a hidden side of you.” Pulling out the proper book he had been in search of.
Up at him she looked and timidly asked, “They don’t, lock those up, do they?”
Over her face he looked in concern and shook his head. “No. No they don’t. Muggles might not ever think they’re actually real outside of science fiction or fairy tales, but they are, just regular people who are able to change how they look, people, animals, creatures even if they practice enough. Like that Prefect Tonks who’s dating my cousin. So maybe, now you know what’s going on it might help, with the-,”
“You lift your hand I’m going to punch you.” She said luring a wide smile across his face.
“Detention, in the least. Now, I’m gonna take you to Professor,” and he moved to the side of the stool to pat the head on it winning a sigh from her in return for the action. “Or I could be labeled an accomplice and end up in the desk beside you. And think of the misery in that, spending an entire evening with me at your side.” That had her plop back onto the cow and he smiled again, “Thank you, from the deepest cockles of my heart for sparing me and yourself the cruelest of evenings party to my company in shared misery of the foulest of tasks.”
“A bit thick,” she muttered and he chuckled, going to check out the second book for her to borrow so he could hover her to the stern but understanding Professor. Who for most of the time until dinner would share all she could to fill in gaps, including hand over an order form for some Veela products to help with the most troublesome traits Minerva herself would foot the bill for and keep up to date on check ins to see how they would help in day to day issues. Sheepishly the teen spoke up to Minerva’s inquest on any more questions to ask, “Does any of this help with the nightmares?”
“Nightmares?” Minerva asked straightening up, “Concerning what precisely?”
“There’s a woman, and she’s locked away, alone, I keep seeing her. She can’t get out. She looks like me.”
Minerva over the top of the desk leaned in to rest a hand on top of Jewels’, “How often do you have this dream?”
“Seven years. Few times a month in the least.”
Minerva’s mouth opened a moment and she nodded, prompt to stand on her feet and offer a hand. “Come with me. Divinations Professor Onai is best to play council to these dreams of yours, and if not her we shall inquire upon a Centaur of the herd in the dark forest.” A possible Seer of limited capabilities, just foreboding dreams apparently linked to a single trapped woman they couldn’t name in any way was the given and unhelpful prognosis. The solution, nightly rituals to help and dampen the frequency of said dreams at least were added amongst the new tasks for detention each night until the window of punishment had run out.
Tricks easy enough for her to carry on all on her own, but not alone, soon she would make good on her self made plan to sneak into the forbidden forest to find the Centaur herd and see what they might have to draw out of the dream. A plan successful in that she got her answer, the trapped woman is a ghost of some power to her past. A guiding spirit instilling warnings of things to avoid muddled by lack of knowledge on how to share the pain precisely beyond the dividing veil. To the Muggle side of her upbringing it rang closer to a guardian angel, and like their biblical counterparts were equally terrifying as beautiful, so the fact these warnings came to be nightmares shifted a bit less unsettling once seen through that light.
To get out of the castle proved to be a simple task. Sneaking back in however was how she got caught. That trip would spur on a month more detention, through which her absent humming observed by Flitwick would begin a change to her life in a way she would have never guessed while being a student in this magical place.
AO3 stats project: tags
In this post, we'll discuss tags on the Archive of Our Own! Please note: because the works on the Archive include explicit material, some of the tags discussed in this post may not be appropriate for your workplace.
The Data | Basic Questions | Fandoms | Tags | Correlations | Kudos | Fun Stuff Thanks to @eloiserummaging for beta reading these posts; any remaining errors are my own.  A Python notebook showing the code I used to make these plots can be found here.
The Archive of Our Own has one of the best tagging systems around. You can read more about it here, here, here, or here. For our purposes, the important part is that users can tag their works however they want, and then a group of people called "tag wranglers" sort those tags, either adding them as synonyms of existing tags or creating new canonical versions for them. What I'll be showing here is the "canonical" version of the tags. For example, a work tagged "flufffffff" or "so fluffy!" would have those two tags assigned to the canonical tag "Fluff", so I will consider both of those tags as being "Fluff" to get the most accurate count.
The other important thing about AO3 tags is that they come in four flavors. The first one is "warnings", the content warnings required by the Archive (plus the default tag indicating you're abstaining from the warnings system). The second flavor is "Characters", tags describing the characters in the work. The third is "Relationships", tags describing the platonic or romantic relationships depicted in the work--typically, "X/Y" indicates a romantic and/or sexual relationship between characters X and Y, while "X&Y" means a platonic relationship, although this usage isn't universal and isn't enforced. The final category is "freeform", aka everything else.
Again, the tagging system is freeform and optional. In particular, I'll note that "character" tags and "relationship" tags don't necessarily imply each other: you can have a work tagged "Sherlock Holmes/John Watson" that only features Mycroft Holmes, or that features John and Sherlock but doesn't tag them as characters, only as the relationship. So remember that--while it's pretty good on average, because people tag their works so readers/viewers can find them--the number of uses of a character tag isn't the same as the number of works that feature that character, for example.
Okay! So what are the most popular freeform tags on the Archive? If you read a lot of fanfiction, I doubt you will be surprised by anything on this list. Left column is the top 15 tags by number of uses, while right column is the top 15 tags by the cumulative hit count on every work tagged with that tag.
Tumblr media
Are these tags consistently popular over time? For reasons of space, I’ll just plot the top 10 by number of works:
Tumblr media
If you look back at the works vs time plot in the second post, you'll see that yes, the shape of these trends is similar to the total number of works, so trends in fannish tastes haven’t changed much over the time the AO3 has been in existence. (These show a little more bumpiness because there are fewer works in each plot.) Some of these have gained a little more recent popularity vs earlier works--smut, fluff, and the two specific alternate universes are a little more weighted towards later times, while humor and general AUs are falling a little behind--but the differences aren’t as large as we saw for fandom trends in the previous post.
I'm sure you're curious about characters and relationships. Here are the top character tags, omitting the catchall character tags of “Original Character(s)”, “Original Male Character(s)”, “Original Female Character(s)”, and “Reader” (all of which would otherwise appear in the top 15). Also, remember this is missing some of the data from 2018 and 2019, as described in the first post, so BTS characters should probably be higher:
Tumblr media
And here are the top relationship tags (again, excluding the catchall “Minor or Background Relationship(s)”):
Tumblr media
And in particular, here are the top characters of color (excluding works with fictionalized race/ethnicity power systems--um, more than modern-day Western society’s power systems are made up--and characters from Voltron Legendary Defender, since I wasn’t able to find enough information on them):
Park Jimin (BTS)
Min Yoongi | Suga
Jeon Jungkook
Kim Taehyung | V
Kim Namjoon | Rm
Jung Hoseok | J-Hope
Kim Seokjin | Jin
Zayn Malik
Katsuki Yuuri
Sam Wilson (Marvel)
Magnus Bane
Nick Fury
Midoriya Izuku
Bakugou Katsuki
Erica Reyes
And here are the top relationships that are not M/M:
Evil Queen | Regina Mills/Emma Swan
Oliver Queen/Felicity Smoak
Bellamy Blake/Clarke Griffin
Clarke Griffin/Lexa
Clint Barton/Natasha Romanov
Pepper Potts/Tony Stark
Captain Hook | Killian Jones/Emma Swan
Kylo Ren/Rey
Hermione Granger/Ron Weasley
Kara Danvers/Lena Luthor
Sherlock Holmes/Molly Hooper
Belle/Rumplestiltskin | Mr. Gold
Allison Argent/Scott McCall
James Potter/Lily Evans Potter
Hermione Granger/Draco Malfoy
Here are the top ten freeform tags for the top ten fandoms. Different fandoms seem to produce different kinds of fanworks--which you'd expect, based on the variety in the source material.
Tumblr media
AU = alternate universe, AU - CD = Alternate universe - canon divergence, AU - C/U = alternate universe - college/university, AU - HS = alternate universe - high school, BJs = blow jobs, ER = established relationship, H/C = hurt/comfort, PWP = plot what plot/porn without plot, RPF = real person fiction, SPN = supernatural.
Finally, for fun, here's the top 200 tags of all kinds, sorted against each other. You can find a lot of fun things on this list. Some of my favorites:
Supernatural is so big, and so focused on so few characters, that Dean Winchester is the sixth most popular tag on the entire AO3.
Clint Barton is way higher than I would have expected.
Sherlock Holmes is slightly less popular than anal sex.
Original female characters are more popular than anal sex.
Similarly, cuddling is more popular than A/B/O.
Harry Styles is less popular than 3/7ths of BTS (at least as of sometime in 2018); Louis Tomlinson barely tops Draco Malfoy.
Alcohol comes between Katsuki Yuuri and Viktor Nikiforov.
Leonard McCoy is below songfic. Please join me in picturing how pissed off he’d be.
The one-two punch of “Spanking” and “I’m Sorry” is pretty amusing.
If I had put up the top 201 tags, 200 and 201 would have been “Flirting” and “Murder”, so Hannibal is almost on this list.
title: fallen angelspairing: severus snape x lily evans (unrequited)(of course)summary: he’d thought the most pain he’d ever felt was when he first saw her with potter. when he’d realized that she wasn’t his anymore.
but that - that’s nothing compared to realizing that she’s nobody’s now. that she’s nothing, nothing but a memory.
(the scene from the dh2 movie when snape sees lily’s body - 10-31-81)
