The train ride back to Hogwarts was either the best or worst part of the Hogwarts experience. Sometimes it was both. It’s a long train ride.
You hadn’t seen your friends all summer due to a family vacation. So you were catching up with Lily Evans, Marlene Mckinnon, and Mary MacDonald for the first time in three months. Everyone had a lot to say.
“You grew your hair out!” Mary exclaimed as soon as you walked into the cart. You smiled at her and pushed said hair back behind your shoulders.
“I’m just trying it out,” you say.
“Are those new clothes? You look amazing,” Marlene said. You smiled at her and glanced down at the clothes you were wearing.
“Oh, yeah. My parents let me redo my wardrobe. Like a seventh year gift or something,” you said. The girls nodded and you all got comfortable in the seats to start talking. About an hour into the ride, Remus opened the door and walked in, shutting it and locking it behind him.
“Hi, Remus, come on in,” Marlene said sarcastically. Remus turned to look at all of you and rolled his eyes.
“Sirius put on his music and is giving a concert. I just want to nap,” he said, looking at Marlene.
“Well, there’s not much room for a giant to lay down on one of our seats,” she said, crossing her arms. Mary got up from next to you.
“Here, I can sit with them,” she said and you didn’t miss the wink she sent you. You had a very well known crush on Remus Lupin. All your friends knew about it. And all your friends were all his friends. So naturally you assumed he knew about it as well. Remus looked at Mary and shook his head.
“No need, I am just going to lay down on the ground.” Mary raised an eyebrow at him and crossed her arms over her chest.
“And you think Marls won’t kick you? What gave you that confidence?” She said. Remus glanced at a smirking Marlene. All three girls seemed to excited to get Remus to sit next to you, and you knew he knew that. However he just nodded and took Mary’s seat while Mary sat in between Marlene and Lily. You glared at all three of them and then you notice how all three of them seemed to be holding in a laugh. You knit your brows together.
“What?” Then you glance at Remus and see that his eyes are already on you. It made you tense up a little. Remus rarely looked at you unless you were talking in the group or class or something. His eyes weren’t on yours. They were wandering like he had never seen you before. You shift a little, glancing at your friends for help but Mary just buried her face in Lily’s shoulder.
Remus quickly looked away from you and cleared his throat. “Oh, um, sorry.” You look away too, not sure how to speak anymore you just nod. It took a grand total of five minutes for all three other marauders boys to be knocking at your door. Remus groaned and stood up, opening the door.
“Why’d you leave, Moony? I was in the middle of Killer Queen,” Sirius said. Remus rolled his eyes.
“Exactly.” Sirius put a hand to his heart and gasps.
“Moony, are you… are you trying to tell me you don’t like Queen.”
“I don’t mind Queen. I don’t like your version of it.” Sirius claps his hands over his mouth and wipes away fake tears.
“Come on, we’ve convinced him to turn off the music,” James said. Sirius waved his hands and shook his head.
“No. No way. I can’t be near him right now,” he said and stole the seat next to you by plopping down. Then he looked over at you and grinned.
“Oh, hey, Y/N. You’re lookin’ great! How far back in line am I with you as beautiful as that?” You raise an eyebrow at him and scoff. Sirius had been practicing flirting with you since first year. He’d asked you in your first week of being friends if you could help him get girls by telling him how good his ‘lines’ were.
“End of the line, with that one, Sirius,” you said. He pouts and looks over at his friend. Remus was glaring at him and he clearly saw that. Then he looked back at you and grinned again.
“Who would be first, then?” He asked, already knowing the answer.
“Why ask stupid questions, just to be a jerk?” You ask. Sirius put his hands up in surrender and his mouth fell open into and O shape.
“I don’t want you to hate me!” You just rolled your eyes.
“Leave us alone Sirius. We’ll see you later,” you said. He pouts again.
“I have to go with the Queen hater?” He asked, giving you puppy dog eyes. You nodded slowly and Remus took a step towards him, grabbing the back of his collar and pulling him up.
“You heard her. Lets go,” he said. He pushed Sirius out of the door and followed the rest of his friends out as well. Ten seconds pass after the door shuts before all three girls erupt in giggles in front of you.
“What?”
“Took her long enough!” Marlene exclaimed.
“That was ridiculous!” Lily exclaimed.
“I can’t believe it’s finally happened!” Mary said through her giggles.
“What are you talking about?” You said. Mary hops up and sits next to you again.
“Remus! He’s head over heels for you, and you just saw it first hand,” she said, placing a hand down on the cushion next to you. You blink at her and finally laugh.
“Have you lost your mind?”
“You are so oblivious! He has always had his eye on you!” Lily exclaimed and you rolled your eyes. Your friends had been teasing you about Remus for years, trying to convince you he liked you back. You couldn’t agree. Remus wouldn’t even acknowledge you if it wasn’t for your friends. “And the way he looks at you!” Lily was grinning from ear to ear.
“It’s the way James looks at this one.” Marlene said, gesturing to Lily, who blushed.
“The way Dorcas looks at Marlene,” Mary said. Lily cleared her throat.
“Frank looks at Alice,” she said. You blink at all of them, seeing that they were being completely serious.
“You have officially lost it. All of you.” Lily and Marlene rolled their eyes.
“Just wait, Y/N, he’s obsessed with you, you’ll see,” Mary said.
“You think that based on one look?” You ask incredulously. They look between each other before nodding. You just rolled your eyes and sat back.
When you got to Hogwarts, everyone went to the Dining hall. The marauders boys always sat with you and your friends. James sat next to Lily and you sat across from her. Remus sat in between you and Sirius, and Mary was next to you. You noticed all your friends smirking at you and you just glared at them as you sat through Dumbledore’s speech.
As you were walking back to the common room, Mary and Marlene were in a deep discussion about Marlene’s next date with Dorcas. Sirius and Peter were discussing a movie they’d seen and James and Lily were walking a little ahead of all of you. Leaving you awkwardly walking with Remus.
“I’m sorry about Sirius earlier,” he said. You look at him and shrug.
“It’s no big deal. Sirius does it all the time,” you said. He nods a little and stuck his hands in his pockets.
“Yeah.” You raise an eyebrow at him. You probably watch Remus more than anyone else in the world. You know his looks. You know when he’s concentrated, angry, excited, happy, tired, frustrated, upset, and when he’s anxious. He looked frustrated.
“Are you alright?” You asked. Remus looked at you. Remus, the tallest boy you’d ever met looked down at you but it never felt like he was looking down on you in a bad way. He shook his head a little.
“Just a little tired,” he said. You rolled your eyes and shake your head. “What?”
“You’re not that tired,” you said. He raised an eyebrow at you.
“And what makes you think that?” You scoff and glance at him for a split second.
“When you’re tired your eyes get all heavy like you’re trying to keep them open and you slouch. When you’re angry or something, your brows scrunch up a little and you tense up.” You gesture to him slightly with your hand without really looking at him. “And you posture gets abnormally perfect.” He doesn’t say anything for a moment.
“I do that?” He asked. You nod a little, crossing your arms over your chest as you pass the open windows. Remus took off his jacket and put it around your shoulders before you even had time to process what was happening. You look at him and shake your head a little, moving to pull it off.
“I don’t really need-” Remus cuts you off and puts an arm over your shoulders to keep the jacket there. When you put your arms down, he lets go.
“Come on, I saw you shiver like two minutes ago,” he said. You blinked up at him, not even remembering the moment yourself. “Besides, it looks better on you anyways.” You felt a blush climbing up your neck and onto your cheeks. “Ya know, Sirius is annoying as hell, but he was right about one thing.”
“You are a Queen hater?” You asked sarcastically. A small smile climbed onto him beautiful face.
“No,” he said, rolling his eyes. “You really are gorgeous.” You couldn’t breathe. You always said Remus Lupin would make you pass out one of these days, but now you thought today might truly be that day. Remus Lupin just called you gorgeous and suddenly nothing else mattered in the entire universe.
“You think I’m gorgeous?” His brows drew together, causing wrinkles on his forehead. He stepped a little closer to you, his confusion evident.
“Why do you say it like that?” He asked. “Of course I do. I always did.” You drop your head a little, your entire body tingling with anxiety and heat.
“Well, I’ve been trying to get your attention forever, and it sort of just always felt like you didn’t care,” you admitted, knowing how all of your friends teased you about the crush for the past few years. You’d always known Remus knew you liked him, you just knew he didn’t like you back so you just went on with your lives like it wasn’t happening. Remus just blinked at you.
“You really fancy me?” He asked. That just felt cruel so you lifted your head up and glared at him.
“There’s no need to be mean, Remus,” you said. He shook his head quickly and took another small step towards you.
“No! I wasn’t trying to… oh,” he stopped himself and squeezed his eyes shut. He glanced over at your friends who had continued walking without the two of you, not even noticing how you two had disappeared. You crossed your arms tight against your chest and looked down. “I always thought you were beautiful,” he said. You didn’t look up at him despite the swarming in your stomach. “I just figured everyone was teasing because of the crush I had on you in second year.” You snapped your head up at that, your eyes widening.
“You liked me?” He nodded and glanced down at his hands in his pockets.
“Yeah, a lot. I just tried to shove it down and move on when the teasing started. I thought it would stop eventually,” he rolled his eyes and you felt yourself deflate. He liked you five years ago and had spent all that time getting over it while you were just becoming more and more addicted to everything about him. You both were silent for a moment.
Finally you take a deep breath. “They were teasing because of me,” you said, unable to look at him again. “It’s truly become a bit of a problem how bad this has gotten.” He didn’t say anything for a moment and you don’t look at him.
“How bad what has gotten?” You squeeze your eyes shut, willing one of your friends to come over and save you from this dreadful conversation.
Finally you look up at him and find his eyes ready to meet yours. Your breath hitched. The sincere curiosity and confusion in his eyes made it a million times worse. “I’ve liked you since basically the end of first year, Remus.” He blinks at you, leaning back slightly like the sentence had actually been a gust of wind he didn’t expect. “It’s horrible, because functioning in your general vicinity is nearly impossible. All I can think about is not making a fool of myself around you,” you added. Now you had finally admitted it and there was no going back now. Remus knew how you felt about him. It made you nervous but also felt like a weight lifted off your shoulders.
The boy you’d been dreaming about for years finally knew how you felt.
“I get that you don’t like me anymore, Remus. And… and that’s fine,” you said and took a deep breath. “I just didn’t think you need to keep thinking you’re the source of the teasing when it is entirely my fault.”
“You’ve liked me since first year?” He asked. You sighed and looked him in the eye again.
“That’s all you’re focused on? Look, nothing has to change. You don’t like me and I understand that. I always have. I don’t want things to be awkward now just because I vocalized what everyone already knew.”
You go to take a step in the direction of your friends when Remus grabbed your wrist, stopping you. You frowned a little and looked at him again. “I didn’t know you liked me,” he said. You blinked at him, shaking your head.
“Our friends have been saying it for years, Remus, I know you knew,” you said. He shook his head.
“No, I didn’t. I knew my friends teased me about a beautiful girl liking me. I just thought is was ridiculous. I had no idea why you would like me,” he said. You rolled your eyes and crossed your arms again, pulling out of his grip.
“Come on, Remus.” He gave you an extremely confused look and you huff out a breath, letting your arms fall. “Remus, you have always been the most perfect boy around. You’re handsome, you’re smart, you’re funny, you’re one of the most loyal people I know, but apparently you’re an idiot also.” He just stared at you for a moment. Then a small smile popped onto his face. Remus always had the capability to make you swoon you just tried not to show it.
“I don’t think I’m the only idiot here,” he said. Your eyes widened and you stared at him for a moment.
“Excuse me?” He rolled his eyes and took a step closer to you again.
“I tried to make my feelings go away. I never said I succeeded.” You blinked up at him, your throat going dry. You try to clear your throat but it doesn’t really help.
“What are you trying to say, then?” You say, lifting your head up and raising an eyebrow. Remus just smiles at you, causing any remaining confidence to fade because that smile will surely make you pass out.
“So stubborn…” he said. “I like you, y/n.” You can’t breathe. You don’t say anything and he raises an eyebrow. Finally he nods and continues again. “I could tell you everything I like about you but I think we’d be here a while.” You finally blink out of your trance, blushing as red as a tomato.
“You’ll have to write it down, then,” you say sarcastically. He just smiles at you.
“I’ll get on that.” You smile a little and his eyes brush over your face for a moment. “So, will you go on a date with me?” Your eyes widen at the question. He waits for a moment for your response.
You freeze for half a second before processing that he really asked that and it wasn’t just your imagination. “Yes,” you finally say softly before clearing your throat and trying again. “Yes, I would love that, actually.” He grinned at you and stepped up to you again.
“Perfect. First Hogsmeade trip is on Sunday. Would you like to go out with me then?” You nod, not fully trusting your capability to speak. His smile is unwavering. This isn’t a joke. You really are going on a date with Remus Lupin.
You and the girls were going to be up all night talking about this.

No one could truly ever tell how Remus would act around the full moon and to whom. So you could only ever prepare for the constants.
Remus was always physically and mentally drained as his body was preparing him for the transformation. His body would ache. Some months could be much more painful than other months. He was always tired, unable to sleep more than three hours if he was lucky. He was normally restless and tended to bounce his knee, chew on his nails or lip, and fidget with things around him.
Some months he was more angry than anything, others he was more depressed. A week before the full moon was the earliest these side effects occurred. It might start earlier in the week or the middle or at the latest a couple days before.
Walking into the great hall, your eyes immediately searched for your love. Upon seeing him you examined his posture and believed you knew what type of day today would be.
When you got closer you saw James piling some of Remus’ favorite foods on the plate in front of him. Your boyfriend had his hands covering his ears. You believed this to be a subconscious movement to keep out all the noise of the great hall.
James noticed you first, sending you a grateful smile as you sat next to Remus. Far enough to not startle him but close enough so that he could sense your presence.
“Hey, honey.” You said softly to alert him that it was you beside him, but not too quietly that he couldn’t hear you.
You didn’t hear what he mumbled but you took it as a greeting. You gently placed your hand on his back and rubbed it in hope to ease his tension.
Remus was always distant at first, the insecurities plagued his mind. You just needed to be consistent and slowly move towards him.
In the beginning you sat awkwardly next to him. James chatted with Sirius as the black haired boy played wizards chess with Peter. James continued to stuff more food on Remus’ plate, doing his best to encourage him to eat.
Soon enough, Remus allowed himself to find comfort in your presence, and ate a few bites of the food James had given him. It wasn’t enough, but you knew he was trying.
Sirius slammed his hands on the table in frustration from the loss of the chess match. Remus jumped slightly, which earned Sirius a glare from you.
“Sorry, Moons.” He sounded sorry, so you let it go.
Remus just snuggled further into you, taking deeper breaths in an attempt to calm himself. The position the two of you were in was odd to the eye, but it was the best, and most comfortable you could do at the grand tables.
Soon, the owls entered, dropping packages, and hooting loudly. Two packages that were nearly the exact same in size and shape landed in front of James and Sirius.
The two of them grinned and picked their packages up at the same time. If you weren’t so worried about Remus, you would’ve laughed at how similar James and Sirius’ movements were.
“Gifts from Effie.” Sirius grinned at your questioning gaze.
You watched curiously as James and Sirius opened the packages. They both pulled out a delicately wrapped box of sweets and a pouch of coins.
“For the upcoming Hogsmeade trip.” Sirius said absent-mindedly, he gave Remus a sympathetic look knowing that the full moon was this weekend.
“Come on, let’s go back to our dorm.” James said, after he placed the items back into his own box.
You nodded, and rubbed the back of Remus’ neck before whispering James’ words to Remus.
He nodded and stood up, swaying slightly. You were quick to grab his hand and walk with him out of the great hall. You tried to persuade him into leaning on you but he was still well aware that if he were to fall, he would crush you.
Thankfully, Peter was at Remus’ other side, helping support some of his weight. While Sirius hung behind, and James led.
You saw his shoulders visibly relax when you were far enough away from the noise that was the great hall.
————————————————
“Under the cloak you go.” James said, throwing his invisibility cloak over you and Remus.
If someone were to see you going into the marauders dorms, talk would arise and it wouldn’t be good for any of you.
When in their dorm, Remus subconsciously moved towards his bed and flopped down as if he had worked tirelessly all day long, even though it wasn't even noon.
You sat on the edge of his bed. Remus, sensing your proximity, moved so that his head laid in your lap.
All the marauders kept glancing at Remus in worry. James the most. So it wasn’t a shock when said boy spoke up, “He should stay in the dorm today.”
You nodded in agreement, “I’m gonna stay too.”
“You sure?” It was Sirius
“One of us could stay with him.” Peter offered
You shook your head, sending them off to class with a murmur of thanks.
Looking down, you noticed Remus had fallen asleep. You smiled, knowing around these times he got all his sleep from naps.
———————————
Hours later you were awoken from the firm grip on your thighs. Remus’ head was shaking, eyes scrunched up and he was sweating.
You caressed his face, trying to comfort him. He seemed to relax a little.
“Remus.” You called gently, shaking him awake.
It took him a few minutes to come to terms as to where he was.
“What time is it?” He asked quietly.
You glanced around for a clock, before noticing the muggle kid watch you had bought for James last year as a gag gift. You squinted trying to make out the time.
“About two hours after noon.” You answered, trying to relieve the tension in your back and shoulders without disturbing Remus.
Remus groaned in annoyance. He moved to try and get up, but the hand you placed on his back easily convinced him to give up and continue to lay down.
“You should try to get some more sleep.” You said, pushing the strands of hair that stuck to his sweaty forehead away from his face.
“No use.” He answered and your heart aches for him.
“I should start you a bath.” You moved to gently lift Remus’ head from your lap but he halted you with a grab of your wrist.
“Don’t leave.” He whined, “I don’t want to be alone.”
“I’m just gonna run a bath for you so you don’t have to sleep in your own sweat.” You tried
“I don’t care.” Remus begged
You effectively placed Remus’ head into the bed despite his protests.
You were more concerned when he moved to sit up. Even in pain, he moved fast, so you couldn’t stop him.
He delicately wrapped his arms around your waist and pressed his forehead against your stomach. Despite having his arms around you, you could barely feel him. You knew he was denying the want of tightening his hold on you, afraid of being seen as selfish.
You moved for him, pressing his arms around you tighter and moved closer to him so he could bury his face in your stomach.
“You’re allowed to want things, Rem. All you have to do is ask me.” You said, rubbing up and down the back of his neck.
“I don’t want you to leave me.” You knew he meant more of a break-up sense than a physical sense.
“I’m not going to, my love.” The sound of your endearment caused a small cry from his lips.
“I hate it so much.”
You couldn’t even imagine all the pain and suffering Remus had to constantly go through.
“I know, is there anything more I can do to help?” You asked
“Just be here.” He answered quietly
“I promise.” You assured him.
———————————————
Eight Years later
“Don’t fuss, Cariad, It’s not that big, I swear.” Remus chuckled painfully, watching you tend to a wound on his stomach.
“It’s bigger than I’d like.” You mumble through the flush on your cheeks.
“It was quite an angry moose, but I rather a wound from him than my own claws.” Remus said
You froze for a moment then picked back up where you left off, not sure if or how you should respond to that.
Remus’ hiss stopped you from a rabbit hole of negative thoughts.
“I’m sorry.” You said absent-mindedly
“That’s enough cleaning, don’t you think, love?”
“Just a little more.” You promised.
When Remus was all bandaged and done he hummed gratefully.
“So,” He began, resting his hands on your hips as you disposed of the bloody cloths. “How should I repay you for taking such good care of me?”
You hummed, acting as if you were in deep thought, “A kiss or two should be enough payment for me.”
Remus chuckled, “Have I not given you enough kisses today?”
You shook your head, “You never do.”
The man scoffed teasingly, “I thought I gave you a healthy amount, but it seems I've begun to spoil you.”
“Your fault.” You said affectionately, leaning down while making not to touch a wound.
One kiss. Two kisses. Three kisses.
He hummed, pressing one kiss to your cheek, “I thought my payment was two kisses.”
“I changed my mind.” You smiled, resting your forehead against his.
“My silly women.” He caressed your cheek.
“Sorry, Rem. You’re stuck with me.”
“Then I shall die the happiest man.”

Could you do "you always see the good in people, even me" with Remus Lupin? 🥹
This has taken me a hot second but please just consider it a late birthday gift!!
There’s something about spending time with your friends that makes a strange ache form in your chest, an opening so big it’s shocking that there’s no physical mark. Everything always looks so easy, so effortless for them, all smiling and laughing and snapping pictures, that you can’t help but feel like dead weight. You’re spending a week in a huge house with your wonderful friends in a beautiful location, but you can’t seem to ignore the chasm in your chest.
“Are we having that rematch tonight?” James asks once everyone’s finished their meals, empty plates and full bellies all around the outdoor table, a pack of playing cards in his hand. There’s a sour taste in the back of your throat, the creeping of bile and impending doom because for some reason you just can’t be around them anymore, can’t stomach another late night watching everyone laugh and talk and have a wonderful time while you wonder about how long it will take them to realize they don’t want you around anymore.
“I think I’ll turn in for the night,” you say as you stand, chair scraping against the stone of the patio as you reach for everyone’s empty plates, desperate to seem useful somehow. There’s a rally of protest, but you can’t seem to convince yourself it’s genuine, so you plaster on a smile and keep making your way inside.
You make quick work of the dishes, thankful that they’re mostly clear anyway, and you hurry upstairs before you can hear their rambunctious laughter and tears well in your eyes. You’re almost in your little room at the end of the hallway when you hear the glass door to the patio slide open and close, but you brush it off as someone needing to use the bathroom, so you open the door to your room anyway.
It’s small, just a twin bed and a dresser and a little nightstand, sparsely decorated but perfectly cozy, with a bathroom that connects you to the room being shared by Marlene and Mary. You’d never dream of complaining, not when it perfectly suits your needs and you’re so thankful to even be included, and especially not when Sirius let it slip that Remus had agonized over room assignments for weeks, desperate for everyone to be happy.
Rifling through your luggage, you pull out a worn hoodie to warm you against the blasting of the air conditioning, and you’ve barely pulled it over your head when there’s a gentle knock at your door. You rush over and pull it open to reveal Remus standing on the other side. His cheeks and nose are red, a reminder of all the days in the last week that have been spent out in the sun, and even his hair has gotten a little lighter, a little fluffier, in the warmer, sunnier months.
“I figured I should come check on you, I know we can be a lot to handle, all day every day with no escape,” he says with a little chuckle, slightly awkward as he rocks back and forth on the heels of his feet. While not shy or reserved by the standards of typical society, Sirius and James back him seem like a church mouse, but you find him positively charming. You’d quite like to spend all day every day with him, but there’s no way you’d ever say that, especially not in these circumstances.
“No, no, everyone’s great!” It’s the truth, but you’re sure you sound overeager, desperate to get an invite back the next time they take a trip or even simply hang out together, “I just get tired easily.”
“Me too,” Remus tells you with that gentle smile you love so much, the one that seems almost involuntarily, as if he can’t help but to smile. Having it directed at you almost makes your heart stop.
Its silent, just the buzzing of the air conditioner and the carrying sounds of an energetic game of cards continuing on the back porch. The two of you just stare at each other, and typically you’d feel self conscious, but you’re too busy trying to commit every detail of Remus’s face to memory, every dip and curve and scar. You wonder if he’s doing the same to you.
The moment breaks when Remus gives a huff, a noise that sounds self-deprecating even when there’s no context to it. You make a questioning sound back, still too distracted by the depths of his eyes to form a real sentence to ask what’s wrong. Luckily, he seems to understand exactly what you mean.
“You always see the good in people, even me,” he says, voice soft as honey, and you wonder what would make him think of this out of the blue, if this is his polite way of telling you to stop staring. You don’t get the chance to ask him what he means, why he was thinking that, because you hear the back door slide open and a stream of voices filter into the house, playfully arguing and breaking the gentle peace that had settled over the house in their absence. Remus goes to join them and you follow, feeling a bit like a nervous dog until he smiles at you over his shoulder, giving you yet another thing to turn over in your mind as you try and sleep, trying to piece together the meaning behind all his words and actions, desperate to figure him out.

It was your seventh year at Hogwarts, and the New Years ball was rapidly approaching. There was now one week until the ball, and anyone that didn’t have a date already was frantically asking anyone they could find. You, on the other hand, had rejected every person that asked you, deciding not to spoil your night with a random classmate that would expect a new year’s kiss from you.
The Marauders had placed their bets on which one of them would get a date first, and of course it was easy for James to ask Lily right away. He took the crown, followed by Sirius, who asked Marlene McKinnon. Peter took a while, but options became scarce as the ball got closer and girls became less picky with their choices. Remus was still without a date, but he knew that the rest of them would never leave him alone if he told them, so he lied instead. It was already bad enough that he ended up in last place, and he didn’t want to go without a date at all.
So, he told them that he had asked you, and that you said yes.
They didn't believe him, but he said that he was going to prove them wrong and that they’d just have to wait until the ball to see. That gave him enough time to actually muster up the courage to just ask you. Well, not really, but he didn’t have much of a choice. Besides, it would be less embarrassing for him to actually ask you than to admit to them that he lied about it.

“Hey, L/n, wait up!” Sirius’ voice echoed out to you in the empty hallway.
You were on your way to the library to work on a project with Remus. The two of you had known each other as acquaintances for quite some time, and you eventually became friends. You were paired together for a project so you occasionally spent time with him inside and outside of class. He was planning on bringing up the ball situation to you during your session at the library, but unfortunately for him, Sirius got to you first.
Sirius jogged to catch up with you, slowing to a walk beside you. “Remus said he asked you to the New Year’s ball. Is that true?”
You peered behind his shoulder, seeing Remus frantically speed-walking to the scene. Judging by the look on his face, you decided it would probably be best to just go along with whatever was going on at the moment.
“Yes, he did.” You stated, hugging your books close to your chest.
“And you said yes?” He questioned.
“Why wouldn’t I?”
“Well, you rejected the entire school, so forgive me for being shocked.”
“He asked me, and I said yes. Can I go now? I have a project to work on.”
“It’s winter break. Why are you working on a project when you have time to relax?”
“It’s due shortly after the break is over. I’d rather do it gradually than cram it all into one night. Though I’m sure you’re the procrastinating type.”
“Yeah, yeah, go on then.” He crossed his arms, scowling.
You rolled your eyes, turning on your heel and continuing on your way to the library. Remus followed quickly behind, ignoring Sirius’ taunting as he passed by.
You entered the quiet library, finding a seat in your usual corner and setting your books down. Remus sat in front of you, cheeks pink from embarrassment.
“What was that all about?” You inquired, crossing your arms across your chest.
“Well, you see, uh…” Remus spoke, fiddling with the hem of his sweater. “We made a bet on who could get a date to the ball first, and I ended up losing, but I didn’t want them to know that I didn’t have a date at all, so I just lied. You were the first person that came to mind, considering that you’re the only person I spend time with other than them. I’m sorry, you don’t have to go with me, I’ll just have to come clean. Though I don’t know what's more embarrassing: having to lie about having a date or admitting that I lied about it.”
“I’ll go with you, Remus. I know you’ll never hear the end of it from them if you don’t go with me. Besides, you’re the only person that I wouldn’t mind going with.” You said, registering your own words a moment too late. “I just mean that you’re the only one that isn’t obnoxious, and I know you won’t ruin the night for me.”
“Right, of course. Well, if it’s really no trouble, then I’d love to go with you. And not just because they’d bully me if I didn’t.” Remus admitted, offering you a warm smile.
You felt your cheeks heat up at his words. You knew that you didn’t just accept his invitation to save him from torment: honestly, you’d love to go with him. Your idea of a dreadful New Year’s kiss with a stranger was quickly turning into a wish that Remus would kiss you at midnight.
You nodded, offering him a smile. “Alright. I suppose we should get to work.”
─────── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───────
It was New Year’s Eve, and it was time to make your way to the ball together. Remus waited outside of your common room, holding a bouquet of flowers and pacing back and forth nervously. You were feeling the same nervousness as him, butterflies swarming in your stomach as you gathered the courage to finally meet him in the hallway.
As you stepped out of your common room, Remus’ face lit up at the sight of you. He cleared his throat, offering you the flowers. “You look beautiful, Y/n. Positively radiant.”
“Thank you.” You grinned, accepting the flowers and putting them in your bottomless bag. “You look great too. I don’t understand why Sirius gets all of the attention in your group, you’re just as handsome, if not even more.”
He chuckled bashfully, offering you his arm. “I appreciate that, but don’t let him hear it. He’ll resent you for the rest of his life.”
“Got it. Don’t tell Sirius. Shall we go?” You took his arm, beginning to walk with him to the Great Hall.
─────── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───────
You spent most of the night chatting about your lives and sharing punch with firewhiskey in it (courtesy of Sirius).
“So you weren’t lying when you said you were taking Y/n L/n as your date.” James quipped. “I didn’t think you had it in you.”
“Why would I lie? Remus asked, shooting you a sly grin.
The clock was ticking close to midnight, and everyone gathered in the middle of the great hall awaiting the countdown.
“Are you ready, Y/n? It’s our last New Year’s ball at Hogwarts.” Remus asked, looking at you.
“Ready as I’ll ever be. I can’t believe we’re so close to graduation and I went all these years without a New Year’s kiss.”
Remus’ stomach fluttered at your words, though he hid it well. “We could always change that.”
Stunned at his words, you stared up at him, not even noticing the countdown beginning around you. You were snapped back to the present by the crowd roaring the last few numbers.
5…4…3…2…1…
Fireworks erupted above you as the students cheered and yelled out “Happy New Year!”. Students waved their sparklers in the air while others embraced each other.
Remus, however, didn’t take his eyes off of you, and you were fixated on him too. He glanced at your lips, as if asking for permission, and you instinctively nodded. Without further hesitation, he brought his hand behind your head, pulling you in for a gentle kiss.
Time seemed to stop as he kissed you, and your hands settled on his back to hold him close. After a few moments, he pulled away, smiling down at you.
“Happy New Year, Y/n.”

Grinch Young R.L. x GN!Reader
Warnings: swearing, mentions of depression, mentions of poverty, and just disliking Christmas
Word Count: 2.8k
Pairing: Young!Remus Lupin x Gender Neutral Gryffindor!Reader
Summary: Christmas was quickly approaching and everyone was excited but you. As the residential Grinch you were not looking forward to the holiday but turns out Remus Lupin is a Grinch as well.
A/N: Hello all! This is my first fic back after a break and I'm really glad to be back. Thank you to everyone who is still reading my stories and I love you all. Also this was inspired by my disliking of Christmas so I projected on the reader and Remus a smidge.

Christmas had exploded around Hogwarts. Pine trees were set up in just about every corner in every single room in the castle. Trees were taller than most of the students and covered in brightly colored baubles and tinsel and magic balls of light that changed color every minute. Garlands and wreaths covered the stone walls and the smell of gingerbread followed the students everywhere they went. The suits of armor broke out into Christmas songs and danced anytime someone passed by. The Great Hall was by far the most decorated part of Hogwarts with festive table runners, stockings hung on the fireplace, large real snowflakes on every surface enchanted to never melt, and the magical ceiling was snowing. It was horrible.
You had never been one to get into the Christmas spirit. The songs were annoying and wormed their way into your brain and never left. The decorations were everywhere and followed you around, literally while at Hogwarts. People were just insanely obsessed with Christmas and overly happy. They were happy to the point of it being creepy and fake and weird.
Possibly the worst was just how excited all of your friends seemed to be. James Potter, sunshine incarnate and your best friend, loved Christmas. He loved everything you hated about it. In fact, James had been talking about Christmas since the beginning of November and he never let you escape it.
“Happy 10th day of Christmas Y/N!” James’s bright and cheerful smile popped up between you and your book. The sudden appearance of his face made you jump, smacking him a little with your book.
“James! You absolute asshole! I’m trying to read.” You huffed and shoved him away as you tried to turn back to your book. The common room was quiet and the perfect place to read until now.
James only rolled his eyes and wedged himself into the miniscule space between you and the arm of the couch. “You know there is an entire couch open? Actually the whole common room is open but you had to sit practically on my lap?”
“Well yeah,” James chuckled as he tore the book out of your grasp and fully moved himself onto your lap. “I have to tell you what I want for Christmas! This year I want Lily Evans to date me.”
“Fat chance buddy. You’ve been wishing for that since you were 13. Give it a rest.” With one hard push, James fell off of your lap and onto the rug with a loud thud. “Besides, don’t you know you don’t get your Christmas wish if you tell it to the Grinch.”
James just looked at you with a wild smirk. “Then I suppose I’ll have to sing a song to reverse the curse!” He then burst into song, singing the Twelve Days of Christmas at the top of his lungs. You clamped your hands over your ears but nothing managed to block out the horrible sounds coming from James until the portrait opened and a figure sped by and body slammed James.
Sirius pulled James into a headlock while Peter quickly sprinted over and sat on James’s chest. “Please Prongs, we’ve talked about this. You can’t sing. Don’t ever try to do it again.” While James struggled to break free from Sirius and Peter, the fourth marauder sat in the open space next to you, his eyes already on his book.
You knew Sirius, Peter, and Remus but not like you knew James. Yes they were friends with your best friend but you never spoke to them unless it was for class or James made you. There was nothing wrong with the three of them. Actually, quite the opposite. You loved them and loved hearing stories about them but you never ran in the same circles. In fact, you didn’t see James as much as you used to either. You had grown up next door to him and as kids you two were always together. It’s not that you two aren’t friends anymore because clearly you are, you just don’t see him around as much.
James found Sirius, Remus, and Peter and never left them. You found your own friends and spent more time on your studies than James ever could. Sirius was fine and you waved to him in the halls. Peter would wave if he was with James or Sirius but not on his own. Remus never really acknowledged you. However, that never stopped you from looking at him. Since James had become friends with Remus Lupin, you were drawn to him. He was quiet just about all of the time but that didn’t mean he wasn’t sassy. You heard the way he would call out James and it was cutthroat. He was tall and handsome and rather mysterious in a way. Not to mention he was smart and was always seen with a book.
“Hey Grinch!” James's voice came from somewhere on the floor.
“What?” You and Remus both said. At the same time, you looked away from Remus as he looked away from his book to find James. Hearing Remus, you then looked at him while he looked at you.
For only a second, no one moved or spoke until James broke the silence. “Right, sorry. Forgot there’s two of ya. Moony?” Remus slowly tore his gaze away from yours to look at his friend who had continued speaking but you could hear none of it.
That was an interesting development. You had assumed James was talking to you since not only does he know about your distaste for Christmas but you called yourself Grinch not very long ago. But Remus also responded so Remus must also not be the biggest fan of Christmas. Otherwise, there would have been no reason for James to call him that or for him to respond.
The night slowly grew darker and while more and more students arrived in the common room, Remus never left the spot next to you. James, Sirius, and Peter eventually left to find some poor soul to bother but Remus remained, his nose still in his book. Honestly, it was making you a little nervous at this point. The man has hardly ever spoken to you since you were introduced back in third year. It's been three years since then and it wasn’t like you were much closer than before.
“You don’t like Christmas?” Remus mumbled, glancing at you out of the corner of his eye. He sounded almost disinterested.
“Yeah, I think it’s quite dumb to be honest.” You expected him to respond, like people usually do when having a conversation but he didn’t. He just hummed a little and went back to his book. “You don’t like it either?” If he wasn’t going to continue then maybe you would just have to make him. It brought almost a sense of hope thinking about the fact that maybe someone else wasn’t enjoying the season. You didn’t want someone to wallow around with but to have someone that wasn’t going to complain about your less than thrilled outlook would be really nice.
“I don’t. Never have.” Remus didn’t even bother taking his eyes off of his book as he answered. It could have been just your imagination but you thought you could just hardly see him smile. He suddenly closed his book and stood, his arm brushing yours in the process. Remus made it to the base of the stairs before he turned back around to look at you. “Hey Grinch.” As soon as you turned and he could see your face, he smiled. “See you later.”
---
At the Gryffindor table later that week, you had once again been minding your own business when James interrupted you. He sat across from you and smirked, reaching over to poke your arm. “Happy 14th day of Christmas, Grinch Number Two.”
“How come I’m the second?” You said with a roll of your eyes before you continued eating your breakfast.
“Because Remus is number one.” He said it like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“Well, I disagree. I knew you first.”
James hummed and shrugged. “I’ll take that into consideration. Did you talk to him after we all left?”
“Did you set that up James?” You asked with narrow eyes.
“No, I just simply called him the nickname I always give him this time of year which just so happens to be the same as yours and I assumed he would mention something about it to you after. Did he?” He leaned forward, eagerly awaiting your answer.
“Yes.” James let out a cheer at your answer, getting him some weird looks from the whole room since he was so loud. Before you could chastise him for being so loud and obnoxious, Remus sat next to you. Which was very odd since before last night, he’s never sat next to you.
Immediately, James got up and moved further down the table to bother Lily. “Are you going home for Christmas?” Remus asked as soon as James was out of earshot. “The final day to sign up to stay here is Saturday.”
“Will you be staying?” You asked.
Remus nodded. “I stay every year.” He opened his mouth and closed it a few times before he evidently decided he didn’t want to say anything and kept it shut.
You could have gone home and while it would have been nice to be with family, you never actually stayed at the castle for Christmas. Now might be a good chance to do it. “I think I’ll stay. I go home every year; my family can survive without me for one year.”
He smiled and started adding food to his plate. “I’m glad you’ll be staying.” You were too busy trying to hide the blush on your cheeks to notice the blush on his.
---
As the holiday neared closer and closer, everyone got happier and happier. Well, everyone but you and Remus. While James and Sirius, who were also staying at Hogwarts, were planning a Christmas party and singing songs, you and Remus bonded over the opposite.
His least favorite song was We Wish You a Merry Christmas, he thought Santa was beyond creepy, and he found the smell of pine to be overpowering. You sat together at meals and laughed at people who were wearing festive outfits. He made you smile as he made faces behind peoples’ backs as they gushed over holiday traditions. On more than one occasion, he shoved James into a pile of snow when he was being too cheery. Remus Lupin was bringing you a lot of joy this season and you were not the only one to notice it.
James made it a point to tell you that this was the happiest he had ever seen both of you around this time of year. In fact, it almost looked like you were enjoying Christmas. You had scoffed at that and then proceeded to shove him into some snow but he did have a point. Remus was making you really happy and it's hard to be a grinch when you’re happy.
But it was nice being happy around the holiday and it was even nicer that Remus was the one making you so happy. You always found him attractive and you knew he was smart and funny but now you got to know just how sweet he was. Yes, he was poking fun at other people but he was doing it purely for your entertainment. He admitted one night after you two had made fun of a particularly ugly Christmas sweater that he never does this; he just liked hearing you laugh. Which made your insides turn into jelly and you couldn’t stop smiling. You also learned that he liked the same books as you and he was so passionate about reading.
He was extremely loyal to his friends and would do anything for them. He wasn’t great at expressing his feelings but he tried his best to let the people close to him know they were loved. He was brutally honest especially when it came to James and Sirius; he was always telling them how stupid they looked or when they were acting like idiots. You felt like a cliche Christmas romance movie but you were falling in love.
---
It was Christmas Eve and James had insisted all seven of the Gryffindors who had stayed needed to sleep in the common room. It was a tradition you two used to have as kids. The night before Christmas you two would sleep on the floor in the living room in front of the tree; you kept up with that tradition until you went to Hogwarts.
Of course before that, there was a party. It was nothing insane like the parties Sirius and James threw after winning a Quidditch game but it was still a party. There were snacks, drinks, games, and Christmas music, much to yours and Remus’s disappointment. You mingled for a while, which is more than Remus could say. He sat on one of the loveseats and only moved to grab more snacks. James tried to get him to play pin the nose on Rudolph but it was easy to guess how that went. While you also didn’t join in on the festive games, you stayed to watch. Sirius managed to get the nose perfectly on Rudolph which made James accuse him of cheating to which Sirius tackled him for ‘insulting his honor’. He confessed to cheating ten minutes later.
Many more games went on like that and after the fifth one, you found Remus still on the loveseat. As you approached, he moved so there would be more space for you. You sat in silence for a while before he spoke up. “Why do you hate Christmas, really?”
You had told him once you didn’t like the music and yes that’s true but it's not the only reason. “I guess I just don’t like how happy people pretend to be. There’s real genuine happiness like James but so many people aren’t happy. Life is horrible and nothing is going right but as soon as it's December, they pretend. It's ok to be unhappy during the holidays; you don’t have to pretend life is perfect just because it's Christmas.” You looked at Remus only to find him watching you. “Can I ask why you don’t like Christmas?”
He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “I never really had a good Christmas. My mom really struggled to be happy around this time of year, especially after…”
“After you became a werewolf?” His eyes grew wide and he started to shake. “No one told me,” you whispered and put a hand on his arm to calm him. “You just were always missing on the full moon and sometimes the day after. I figured it out. I don’t think of you differently.”
Remus took a minute to process the fact that you knew his deepest secret before he continued his story. “Yes, after I was bitten my mother was horribly depressed around Christmas. I think it made her remember everything and she couldn’t be happy. It also was harder for my parents to get money after since no one really wanted to be around us. I saw my parents struggle all month to save money to get me a gift. My mother especially would go without dinner just to waste money on some stupid toy. After seeing that, well it makes it hard to like Christmas.”
Your hand found his and you intertwined your fingers with his. “I’m sorry Remus.”
He shrugged a little and watched your hand as his thumb stroked yours. “It isn’t your fault. Actually, you’ve made this the best Christmas I’ve ever had.” He smiled and looked up at you, his cheeks a dusty rose.
“You’ve made this my best Christmas as well.” It was then something bumped your head, causing you to look up. Behind the loveseat was James who had tied some mistletoe to a stick and was holding it over your head. Remus followed your gaze and sighed, rolling his eyes. “We don’t have to if you don’t want to.”
“Do you want to?” Remus whispered. You knew James could hear every word you were saying despite him pretending not to listen but you didn’t really care.
“Yes.” You hardly finished the word before Remus leaned down and brought his lips to yours. Immediately your arms wrapped around his neck and brought him closer if it was even possible. His hands found your waist, lips moving against yours in perfect sync. Unfortunately, the kiss had to end so you could breathe.
Remus nudged your nose with his. “Now it’s the best Christmas ever.”

Remus found himself staring at the tracks in front of him. His eyes studied the nails and the iron bars of the train tracks. He can hear the horns of the Hogwarts Express blasting indicating it’s near. It drowns out the sounds of the students and their families around him. He looks at the red and black train coming and Remus takes a step forward.
Remus has thought of this a lot before, stepping in front of a train. Trains, buses and cars. Just one leap and it will be over. His fingers tighten over the straps of his bag over his shoulder as he thinks about it more.
A quick death, what a wonderful relief.
He hates having a full moon in the summer when he is away from Hogwarts. He didn’t have any of his friends during that time. They were off on vacation or doing activities with their families and Remus doesn’t have the heart to ask them to come over. His friends have done so much for him. He’s afraid of asking for too much and they will leave him for it. He doesn’t want to be alone.
Remus takes another step forward getting a bit closer to the edge and as he looks ahead. His mouth slightly dropped open when he saw a man standing on the other side of the tracks staring back at him. The man stood there bloody, throat ripped open, slashes across his face and chest. Blood was gushing out from the man’s wound. He wore dark blue trousers and a white ripped collar shirt. The man lifted his hand towards Remus, reaching for him. With his finger, he pointed at Remus as blood dripped down from it. Remus feels the bile coming up his throat when the man try to open his mouth to speak. Blood came pouring out from his mouth and Remus stands there frozen in fear. Remus doesn't see a flash of red running towards him.
“Remus!” He feels a force come at him making him take a step back from the edge of the platform. The train approaches, hiding him away from the bloody man. He felt Lily hug him and Remus shut his eyes as he wrapped his arms around her pulling her into a tight hug. He missed her so much this summer. He didn’t visited her like usual. He couldn’t. He was ashamed of himself. He tries to get rid of the sight of the man he just saw, he continues to hug her. Lily rubbed his back when Remus didn't pull right away.
Lily Evans, was the first friend he made when he came to Hogwarts. She was the first to realize what he was and she was the first to not make him feel bad for being a werewolf. As times passed he was welcome into a group of three boys. They didn’t make him feel bad as well, they had even helped him by becoming animagus and stayed with him through his transformations.
“You haven’t written back to me all summer.” Lily said when they pulled away. The students around them started boarding into the train.
“Forgive me, Lils. Rough summer is all.” Remus said as he grabbed his luggage by his feet along with Lily’s. She gave him a thanks and he just nodded. He wasn’t going to allow her to carry the heavy thing.
Lily and Remus greeted the other students in their year as they walked to their usual compartment. Remus with ease placed the luggage on the top shelf as Lily sat down. Remus sat down with a huff beside her, next to the window, his favorite spot. Lily opened her beige shoulder bag and took out a brown lunch paper bag with the letter R written on it.
“Mom, send you a snack.” Remus smiles as he grabs it from Lily.
“She’s a saint.” Remus said as he opened it, taking a look inside. In separate plastic bags, he saw there were slices of green apples and a jam sandwich cut diagonally. There was even a small juice box.
“Green apple, my favorite.” He comments.
“Ugh, she likes you more than me.” Lily pulled out a bag of baby carrots instead of apples like him. Lily’s mom knew of Remus, he would visit Lily sometimes during break and the summer. Lily’s mom was always happy to see him and even called him a son at one point when he always offered to take out the trash or wash the dishes. Remus thought it was the least he could do since they had him over for dinners. Petunia wasn’t really fond of him, but he didn’t mind her. He ignored the names being aimed at him when he sat across from her during dinner.
Remus chuckles at Lily then he takes the bag of apples out. “I’ll trade.”
“You would really do that for me?” She asked him with a pout.
“Hurry, before I change my mind!” Lily laughs and gives him the bag of baby carrots as she gets the bag of apples.
Remus drops the baby carrots into his brown paper bag, saving them for later. He looked over at Lily when he noticed what she was holding out. He gives her a smile and grabs the slice of apple from her hand.
Quickly putting it in his mouth,  he hummed at the sweetness of the apple as he chewed. Lily frowned and stopped mid-bite when she noticed Remus looking out the window. His eyes roaming quickly on the other side of the platform.
“Looking for someone?” Lily asked and Remus looked over at her. He shook his head, telling her nobody.
Lily is eating when Sirius and James come walking in. Remus rises up from his seat to greet his friends. Lily does the same. Remus helps Sirius with his luggage as James sits next to Lily by the door. Sirius sits across from Remus.
He’s listening to Sirius ramble on about his summer, it was another horrid one. His mother had gone mad about tradition with the family. He was a disgrace for being a Gryffindor, but he was even more of a disgrace to his family when they found out Sirius doesn’t agree with the pureblood ideas. James and Lily are talking amongst themselves. Remus and Sirius just gave each a look, James was finally getting on Lily’s good side.
Sirius hits Remus' shoes with his elbow that rested next to him. Remus had quite a growth spurt last year. He had his leg resting on the seat across from him.
“How was your summer, mate?! I sent you a letter, you know?” Sirius' cheeks grow pink and Remus notices it.
“I’m sorry. I did receive it. I had a hard time answering back. Last moon was draining.” Sirius nods at him, understandingly.
“Are you okay now?” He asks Remus. Sirius notices something odd with Remus when he doesn't answer right away. He didn’t like it one bit. Remus was usually cheerful whenever they came back to school.
“Yes, Padfoot.” Remus answers as he leans his head against the window. Sirius decides to not push it and asks Remus about a book he was reading before summer break. He smiles when he sees Remus' whole demeanor change, Remus sat up and excitedly told him about it. The train lets out another sound and a few seconds later. The train began to move then after a few more conversations about Lily and James’ summer. One by one they started to doze off.
Remus was sleeping with his head against the window. His body jiggled softly as the train kept on moving. He scratches his nose when he feels an itch in his sleep. Inhaling deeply, Remus’ eyes shot open when a scent hit him. The scent is new, it didn’t come from his friends. Remus felt a chill down his back, it was a strange feeling. He doesn’t know why he’s smelling it, the full moon has passed already. Why is the lycanthropy still residing in him?  Sitting up straight, he looks over at his friends. They are still sleeping, he wonders why Peter isn’t here. They have been taking the same spot in the train for five years now, so Peter couldn’t be lost in finding them.
Remus felt his throat close up when the smell hit him again. He rose up from his seat, taking another sniff in the air.  He noticed the door was a bit open. He figured it was Sirius who usually forgets to latch the lock whenever coming back from the restroom.
Remus decides to go to the bathroom and wash his face. He figured he was smelling things because he had a rough summer. He was barely sleeping at home. The nap on the train was the best sleep he had all summer. He shuts the door behind him then looks up and down the hall, it’s empty. The lights of the hallway were lit up, he saw most of the other people had pulled down the curtains for privacy as he walked to the restroom. Remus yawns as he walks inside the restroom and turns on the light. Rubbing his eyes he steps in front of the toilet to relieve himself. Letting out a small moan when finished urinating, he turns his head to the door. That fucking smell is there, he quickly walks to the door. He presses his forehead against it. Remus inhales the scent, it's on the wooden door.
The scent of copper, the scent of a girl.
Remus doesn’t realize at first but he breathes heavily, his forehead is pressed against the door as his right hand touches his chest and drops down to his lower stomach. He fist the sweater he wore on top of his uniform in his hand as he sniffs harder. When his fingers hits the zipper of his trouser, the urge to touch himself came over him. His eyes shot open and he quickly stepped away from the door. He stared at it, scared. This has never happened to him before. A scent that was making him horny, it was new to him.
Remus knows this isn’t him, this has to be Moony. The wolf that resides in him. Moony should be gone by now but he isn’t. He leans against the wall of the bathroom and let's out a sigh. He shook his head as he looked down at his hands, he shut his eyes when he remembered how his hands looked with all that blood. He looks ahead at the mirror and whines when the background changes. He saw himself back again in the woods behind his house.
“Stop it.” He hissed to himself as he looked away and started to push the button of the soap dispenser on the wall.
Turning the hot water all the way up. He ignored the heat of the water as he washed his hands until it was pink and raw.  He kept telling himself, he had to scrub it away, wash the blood away. He looks ahead at the mirror and stares at himself. His eyes are staring at the new scar on his face. He hates his appearance, despises it. It’s just a constant reminder of what he is, a monster. His friends tell him differently but Remus knows he’s one. He truly is especially after what he did.
Running his fingers through his hair, damping his sandy brown curls before turning off the light, he walks out of the bathroom. The hallway is still empty, he shuts the door and starts to walk back when he smells it again. His chest started to feel tight and he bit his bottom lip as he turned to face the other side of the hallway.
He’s staring down the hall and he can smell it again.
“Fuck.” He murmured when he saw that part of the train, usually students of House Slytherin, sits in. He steps forward carefully as he looks to the left. Most of the train compartments had the curtains drawn down, he stopped when one of the doors was slightly open. He guessed whoever was in there forgot to use the lock.
‘Another Sirius.’ Remus tells himself as he looks inside. He sees a figure sleeping on the cushion seats, a leg hanging out. He frowns when he notices they wore jeans and sneakers. The person wasn't in uniform like them. Remus hears laughter further down the hall and quickly goes back. Last thing he wants to do is come face to face with a Slytherin. Making it back to his seat, he gently sat back down to not disturbed Lily who was leaning against James. He grabs the brown lunch bag Lily’s mom made for him.
Remus quietly eats his sandwich as he stares out the window, watching the scenery. He never gets tired looking at the mountains and lakes as the train makes its way to Hogwarts.
Shelley Mumps was the one who woke everyone the following morning. Remus had dozed off after eating his sandwich. He jumped out of his sleep when Shelley slid the door open with such force.
“What happened?” James said in a sleepy voice as she shut the door and sat beside Sirius waking him up.
“There's a transfer student. She's in our year.” Shelley said, looking at them.
“Cool, can we go back to sleep?” Sirius said getting himself comfortable again against the wall.
"She's American.” She added. Remus frowns. “They allow Americans in Hogwarts?” He questioned.
“ Apparently because she’s here. Some of us saw her walking down the hallway. She was staring out the window. You should have seen the clothes she was wearing.” Shelley laughs and Remus looks away from her.
Lily just sighs at her friend. “What do you mean by that, Shelley?”
“She had ripped holes in her jeans and her shoes looked dirty. She had this shirt with this ugly green army jacket. She looks homeless.”  Sirius was awake now and looked at Remus who kept quiet and stared out the window.
“I'm sure, it wasn't that bad.” James said, clearing his throat as he sat up straight in his seat.
“Oh please. The train is stopping soon. You’ll see her.” Shelley said before waving bye at them.
“Tell me why you are still friends with her?” Remus asks softly, looking over at Lily.
“I have too, I share a dormitory with her.” Lily said, grabbing her bag as they felt the train stopped.
They quickly got up and started to get their belongings. The students lined up and walked out the train. “Let's see if we can catch a glimpse of this girl.” Sirius tells Remus and James as Lily waved bye at them to find her other friends.
Remus walked behind them as they walked to the waiting carriages. Leaving their trunks and luggage behind, they sat down. Remus looks around but has no luck in finding this ‘homeless girl.’ The carriages make it to the gates and they step down to walk towards the school, it was a five minute walk.
“Peter!” James exclaimed and Remus looked over to see his friend walking towards them.
“I missed the bloody train! My parents were furious. They had to drop me off.” Peter said with a sigh. Sirius and Remus shook their heads, Peter had a tendency of being late. They welcomed Peter with a hug.
“Did you hear the news?” Sirius asked.
Peter rolled his eyes. “Yeah, Shelley gave me the full details on the new girl.”
They walked together to the castle when they noticed a group of students standing by.
“Oi!” James yells and a Ravenclaw boy, named Hems in their year, turns around. “What's going on?”
“The American is with Hagrid.” Hems tells them as they get closer. Remus looked ahead to see.
“Is she daft? What's she petting?” Remus hears another student ask.
“Her name is-.” Someone said your name and Remus thinks it’s a nice name. He continues to look at you, trying to get a good look at your face.
He can see Hagrid talking to you with a smile as you kept petting at the air but Remus can see the thestral you were petting. He could see its leathery wings flap for a second before circling around you making you giggle. Shelley was blowing your appearance out of proportion but it was exactly what he expected from a pureblood. He looks at you and he thinks your smile is pretty, that's what he noticed first about you. He looks at your clothes. You look casual. You look like a regular muggle, it reminded him of the outfit Sirius usually wears whenever going out to a muggle place. The green army jacket is a bit big on you. You wore a black shirt and blue ripped jeans.
The thestral rubbed its head against your bookbag, you wore and Hagrid shooed the thestral away from you when it started to nibble on your bag making you laugh loudly.
“What is she laughing at?” A student asked loudly.
“You idiot, it's thestral.” Remus looks over and notices Severus with a group of Slytherins standing by. He was glaring at you as he answered. Remus noticed Hagrid leaning down to tell you something. You turn to face them and Remus sees your face for a second. Your eyes widened by the sight of them and quickly looked away before he could get a good look at you.
“Two galleons, I’ll have her in bed by the end of the week.” Remus noticed an older student from House Ravenclaw speak out. Remus rolls his eyes when the group of students around him starts to snicker and begin to place their bets on you. He watches you walk away with Hagrid towards the school.
“James? Sirius?” The guy said, looking over at them.
“No, mate. I’m good.” James said before signaling his friends to keep walking. Remus doesn't want any part of it either.
Sirius stops in mid step when one of them starts to laugh and yells out, “The American probably has diseases. You know they are sluts.”
“15 galleons says she doesn't sleep with you.” Sirius said, making them stop laughing and look at him in disbelief at the amount of money he was placing.
“You're on, Black.”
Remus, James and Peter waited for Sirius to finish when he saw Severus and his friends walking away. James just glared at Severus and the long, dark haired boy did the same to James.
“You really think she won't sleep with him?” Peter asked as they continued to make their way to the castle.
“You have to be Shelley to sleep with them. I doubt she's like her.” Sirius said, shaking his head.
Settling back down in Hogwarts was easy for Remus. He missed his bed and being around his friends. The atmosphere was different from back home. He wasn't alone, in Hogwarts he was surrounded by students, professors, and even ghosts.
Getting ready for dinner, he spoke to Sirius about another book he got. Remus was fond of Sirius and even though they both came from completely different backgrounds. They were best friends. Sirius was the second person to figure out what he was. Remus had cried in front of him when he figured it out. Sirius didn't speak while Remus told him that he would understand if he didn't want to be friends anymore. Sirius just hugged him tightly. Hugged him until he calmed down.
“You’re ridiculous. If you think, I'm going to stop being your best friend, mate.” Sirius spoke out after a few minutes.
‘We’ll figure something out to help you. I promise.”
Remus didn't believe it at first but when James and Peter figured it out he told them the truth. The three managed to become animagi behind his back and showed Remus when they accomplished it. He never felt so accepted before. They supported Remus during his transformations and mood swings when the full moon was near. They accompanied him in their animagi form to the Shrieking Shack then later carried him to Poppy Pomfrey.
He was forever grateful for them. He really was so when he got too deep in his head and started thinking about dying and ending himself. He thinks of them. He thinks of Sirius, Peter, James and Lily. He thinks of his mom as well.
He thinks about the time his mom would bath him when he was too hurt. She would feed him, dress him when he couldn’t move. His mother changed completely during the recent summer. She couldn’t look him in the eye and it broke him. His father who treated him differently already barely said a word.
‘Oi!” Remus was deep in thought when James caught his attention.
“You okay, Moony?” James said, walking towards him. They were in their dorm room, putting their stuff away when James saw Remus laying on the bed with his hands behind his head, staring up at the ceiling.
“Yeah, Prongs.” James nods and sits beside him on the bed. Remus pushes himself up and holds himself by the elbows.
“You know I wrote to you this summer. Like four times.” James said softly as Peter and Sirius were in the bathroom freshening up to go to dinner.
“I know. I just-.” Remus feels James' eyes on him. “I don't know.” Remus lied.
“Everything okay at home?” James whispered in a concerned tone, he knew about his life at home. Remus nods as Peter and Sirius come out of the bathroom laughing about something.
“Ready to eat?” Peter asked as they put on their robes.
“Yes!” Remus said getting out of bed, he looked over his shoulder to meet James' gaze who was still sitting down and staring at him. He did not believe Remus for a second. James drops it because he knows Remus hates being the center of attention so he drops it for now and says yes to Peter.
Remus finds himself looking for you at the great hall but he can’t. He keeps his head down and listens to James and Lily talking in front of them as Sirius is talking with Marlene. Peter is next to him, trying to ignore Shelly who was talking about her summer. He was more interested in what's for dinner.
“Welcome Students! Back for another year with us. I do hope everyone had a good summer.” Remus sighs as he looks down at the empty plate in front of him. The headmaster Dumbledore makes a few announcements about classes and a new teacher who will be teaching D.A.D.A.
“Lastly, it gives me great pleasure to introduce a new student that will be joining us,-.” Dumbledore announces your full name and Remus repeats it in his head. He remembers your smile. It was so genuine, no one smiled like that to thestrals.
“She’s from America, boys and girls. She will be studying with us. I want everyone to give her a warm welcome.” Remus looked up from his plate and looked over at the doors of the hall when it opened. He saw you wearing their uniform on. You stood next to Hagrid who urged you to walk inside.
Remus claps along with his friends as you walk to Dumbledore and McGonagall, who had the sorting hat ready for you.
“She looks like she's going to throw up.” Remus hears a Slytherin ahead of him joke. While you walked up the steps and sat down on the stool, facing everyone. Your eyes were looking down when McGonagall placed the hat on your head.
The sorting hat hums as it rests on top of your head.
“I feel it, young one. Don't you?” Remus saw you looking over at Dumbledore with a frightened look. McGonagall nods at you, easing your worries. You look down at the ground once more and your hands clasped on top of your lap.
“Difficult choice, indeed.” The hat says.
“A fighter!” The sorting hat yells, making everyone whisper.
 “A protector!” Remus noticed the look on Dumbledore's face.
“Oh- my, that is-.”  The hall quieted down when the hat stopped in mid sentence.
“I know now! I see it!” The sorting hat crackled loudly.
 “Slytherin!” Remus saw you lift your face to look ahead and Remus thought you were the most beautiful person he had ever seen. He took notes of your nose and lips. Your eyes and the way you looked so nervous made him feel bad.
He looked away from you when the hall started to applause. McGonagall was kind enough to show you where the table was. You looked down at your uniform when you noticed the color had changed.
He peeks between Lily and James and sees you picked the farthest empty seat from the table. He can see you take a deep breath as you look at the silverware in front of you when you sit down.
Shelley is sniggering with an older student from Gryffindor who is sitting beside her.
“What's so funny?” James asked. “She probably doesn't know what a fork is? Don't Americans eat with their hands?” The boy asked James.
“That’s fucked up, lad.” Sirius says, eyeing him.
“Look ahead, she's using them just fine.” Lily snaps before looking down to eat her food. Remus looks over and notices you have begun to eat as well. It was quiet after that, Remus ate and only looked over when he took a sip of his juice. They ignore the others who keep making jokes are your expense. They spoke about your hair and how you looked. Some thought you were hot while others thought you were ugly.
Sirius noticed how Remus was quiet. It was pretty normal for Remus to be quiet. Quiet Remus, who only speaks when spoken too but right now it was different. Sirius felt his best friend’s vibe completely off right then and there.
Remus had different sides of him. He can be so quiet then be very cheerful and make jokes. Until the full moon comes, he becomes cranky and snappy. Sirius stabs his chicken with his fork as he looks at Remus. There’s a new scar on his face and Sirius doesn’t have the courage to ask him about it. Especially since he saw how Remus acted when asked why he hadn't responded to his letter. Something must have happened during the summer, Sirius thinks to himself.
He noticed Remus looking over when he took a drink. He followed his gaze and landed on you. Sirius does a double take when he sees his younger brother Regulus walking towards you with his plate in his hands along with his cup.
Regulus flashes you a smile. “Oh fuck!” A Gryffindor from the table whispered.
Regulus sits down across from you. “You ok?” Remus whispers when he sees it.
“Of course, why wouldn’t I be? He’s with his kind.” Sirius says to Remus but he doesn’t believe that Sirius can just be okay. Remus knows the complicated relationship that Sirius had with his younger brother.
It was a few minutes later when Regulus and you stood up. Plates are empty and Remus watches as you pick up the empty plate.
“What is she doing?” A boy from the Hufflepuff table behind them says catching their attention and the voices in the hall become quiet.
“Do we have to wash it?” It was a simple question that you asked. Remus gets annoyed at the fact that you get laughed out by the Slytherin table when you ask Regulus.
Regulus shoots them a glare and shakes his head at you before telling you that there was no need. You can leave your plate there and the elves will get it and clean it.
“Elves?” You frowned, and your eyebrows knitted together in confusion.
“Like a Santa's elf?” Remus hasn’t heard the word Santa since he was a kid.
Regulus tilts his head at you, he’s confused now.
“She’s half blood then?” Remus hears the table start throwing ideas of what your blood is.
“What the fuck is a Santa?” Sirius whispered to James then looked at Remus when James shrugged his shoulders.
“Are  you sure that she’s in the right grade if she thinks Santa is real?” Someone asked loudly and people began to laugh.
It had gotten to the point that the laughter behind Remus started to get to him. He didn’t find it funny at all that they were making fun of you. He wondered what did you know about magic, perhaps you didn’t know anything at all. His guess had to be that you were muggle born but he keeps it to himself because if he was right about you being a muggle born then you will have a difficult time, especially in house Slytherin.
He knows what it feels like to be made fun of and he hates it. He gets bullied for his scar face. He gets bullied because he’s quiet. He gets bullied because he’s poor.
He sees Regulus walking out with you from the great hall. He leaves a few minutes after saying he had a headache but he just didn’t want to hear the comments they were making. He decided to go to sleep early that night.
He was glad he had a dreamless sleep. He didn’t dream about the man. It was morning and he saw you again walking with a younger student from your house to the great hall. Remus walks in with Peter and he sighs when he sees Shelly and Marlene there already, eating. He didn’t mind Marlene at all, she was kind and reminded him of the female version of Sirius. She was spunky and played quidditch with James and Sirius.
“Morning, guys.” Remus greets them and sits down. While a Ravenclaw girl ahead of them rises up from her seat and runs to Shelley.
“You won’t believe what I just heard!” The girl said to Shelley.
“The American slept in the bathroom on her first night here. Her roommates are telling everyone. They heard her crying.” Shelley and the girl began to laugh.
Marlene looks at the girls. “I don’t find that funny. She probably misses her home.”
“Oh come on, Marlene.” Shelley said, waving her hand dismissing Marlene’s words.
Before she can say anything James and Lily along with Sirius came in. “Morning.” They greeted their friends.
“I’m not ready for classes.” James sighs as he sits down.
“Guys, Penelope just told me that -.” Remus finally cracks and cuts her off when he slams his hand on the table loudly and looks over at her.
“Would you shut up already? Enough making fun of the new girl.” He said and Shelley grows red from embarrassment of his sudden outburst.
“You feel bad for nasty foreigners?” The Ravenclaw girl, Penelope asked, crossing her arms over her chest.
“I feel bad for anyone that has to deal with tossers like the both of you!” Remus said, looking at her and Shelley. He stood up from his seat ignoring James and Sirius calling out for him. He walks out the doors and goes back to his room. He paces around the room, coming to terms on what he just said to Shelly and the other girl. He felt bad for calling them that name but he just got so angry.
How can people make fun of other people suffering, he asks himself. He had lost count on how many times he’s cried himself to sleep during his first year coming to Hogwarts. Being alone and afraid that someone will find out his wolf secret. He checks the clock on the nightstand and notices it's almost time for his first class. He grabs his books from his trunk and hopes he doesn’t see Shelley or the other girl.
He started to grow worried as he walked to class that Lily would be angry at him for calling her friend a wanker. He was surprised when Lily hugged him when they saw each other for the third class of the day.
“I can’t believe her!” Lily told him when she unwrapped her arms from him.
“Don’t tell anymore but sometimes I get homesick. I’m in tears in the tub.” She admits to him.
“You know how I feel about bullies.” Remus tells her and she nods at him knowing all too well about bullies. She was a victim like him, she was bullied heavily in her first year for being a muggle-born and sometimes even now.
When lunch began he was walking with Peter who didn’t say much about the incident and Remus was grateful for it. They talked about their class they had last period. As he walks in he sees you sitting with the same younger student. You were smiling and so was the kid.
The kid had a book open in front of you and Remus smiles at your choice of writing utensil. You were using a pen instead of a quill and you were writing down on a regular notebook instead of parchment paper.
The kid kept talking while you nodded and wrote frantically.
Everything seems to be going well, Shelley had decided to eat with her friend, Penelope at the other table. James and Sirius came soon into the hall talking enthusiastically about quidditch.
“Guys! Guys!” Remus flinched when a group of Hufflepuff students came beside him and stared ahead at the Slytherin table.
Remus looks ahead as well to see what all the fuss is about. Lance, from house Ravenclaw is in his last year and everyone knows him for being a bully. He was pure-blooded so he thought everyone who wasn’t was beneath him. He usually picks on the muggle born and the half bloods from any house. Of course no one interfered because they didn’t want to get bullied as well. Lance’s blue eyes widen as he walks into the great hall and makes his way to the kid sitting across from you.
“He’s such a twat for always picking on Ruben.” The Hufflepuff next to him tells the group.
“Ruben is the kid?” Sirius asks and they all nod as Lance gets behind Ruben and pulls on his hair making him yelp. Remus has never seen someone's eyes grow hard so quickly. The smile you had on disappeared. The hall grows quiet when you stand up from your seat.
“Get the fuck away from him.” It was not usual for Lance to have someone stand up to him. He was caught by surprise from your words.
“What did you say?” Lance said with a disbelief chuckle.
“Get. The. Fuck. Away. From. Him.” The great hall is quiet and Remus noticed a few teachers had risen up from their seats when they noticed what was going on.
“What’s going on here?” McGonagall had walked towards the table and stared at Lance then at you.
“Nothing, Professor McGonagall. Just having a chat with my friend Ruben.” Lance said, taking a step back while still staring at you.
Ruben was almost in tears by the whole thing. Professor McGonagall walks Lance back to his table.
“She just placed a death mark on herself.” One of the Hufflepuff near Remus said, shaking his head. Lance was staring daggers at you and you kept your eyes on him showing no fear, just hate. You didn’t take your eyes away from him until he sat down and spoke with his friends.
“You might just win your bet. She got balls.” James says, turning back around to Sirius who turned as well to continue on with his meal.
“What bet?” Lily asked the boys and they got quiet real fast. James being whipped for Lily ratted them out and she shook her head, telling Sirius how horrible that is.
“I betted that she won't sleep with anyone, Lily!” The redhead girl shook her head as Marlene copied her. Remus kept silent as he glanced over the table and saw you grabbing Ruben’s bag. You and the kid started to walk out of the great hall after collecting your things.
He was surprised when he saw you walking inside the classroom. You were a few minutes late for charms class. The professor grabbed the slip from your hands and pointed at an empty seat in the back. Remus almost drops the quill in his hand as you pass him to sit on his row. Remus usually stayed in the back because he was tall. A Hufflepuff girl, Nancy sat in the middle between you and him.
In the corner of his eyes he noticed you had taken out the same book as before and a pen.
The Charm professor called out your name as he walked towards you. The student laughed when he told you that there is no pen and notebooks allowed only quill and parchment paper.
“I’m sorry. Mr. Robinson. I‘m still learning how to use the feather thing.” You told him, looking up at him.
“First, it’s called a quill and you're a witch now so you better start learning fast how to use it. Second of all, it’s Professor Robinson. Things are different here, Miss.”
“Yes, Professor Robinson.” Remus looks away by the tone of your voice. You sounded so defeated. Professor Robinson walks away and continues with his lesson. Nancy leans over to you when you grab the quill from your bag and the ink.
“Hold it like this.” She whispered to you showing you how to handle your quill properly.
Remus goes back to write his notes, he hoped you realize not everyone in this school were mean. There were some students who were kind. Throughout the class, his eyes would glance over Nancy to you.
After class Remus walks to the Gryffindor common room. Making it inside, he heard chattering and looked over to see Lily and Mary Macdonald.
“Hey, Remus!” Lily said, waving him to come over towards them. They were sitting on the couch by the fireplace. Remus sits on the other side as Mary hands him a box of chocolates they were eating. His eyes widened and they giggled at his expression.
Lily chuckles when Remus is wiggling his fingers trying to decide which one to take. James and Sirius came with their Quidditch uniforms on. Lily frowned when she saw them walking towards them.
“I thought you guys had practice?” Lily asked and Remus looked over at them with a frown when they didn’t say anything. The guys just looked at each other for a brief moment.
“Oh fuck, Sirius have nothing to say. It must be bad.” Mary said, trying to lighten up the mood but James and Sirius didn’t say anything. They sat on the couch across from them instead.
“They canceled practice.” James said and Lily glanced over at Remus. It had to be more, James would be in tears if practice was canceled. He took quidditch very seriously.
“Why?” Remus asked, grabbing another chocolate from the box. Sirius takes a deep breath.
“The word is going around that the new girl is muggle born.”
‘Shit.’ Remus says to himself. He was right.
“She didn't know what it meant, they asked her about her parents and she told them they weren’t wizards. Those snakes dragged her by the feet to the quidditch field and slimed her while chanting mud blood.” Sirius said. Lily and Mary dropped their mouths open in shock. Sirius and James glance at each other. They were famous for their pranks. Being slimed in the field was a good idea but they didn’t like how you began to cry and how confused you looked about the whole thing.
“Never seen Professor McGonagall look so mad before. She started yelling.” James said, leaning back on the couch crossing his arms over his chest.
“Did you see the new girl?” Lily asked and James nodded. “Yeah, the other professors had to help her off the field.”
“Blimey.” Remus mumbled as the door of the common room burst open and Shelly walked in laughing with a group of students. Remus rolls his eyes when he hears your name being whispered. This year was going to be rough, he tells himself while popping the piece of chocolate in his mouth.

Soulmates.

Pairing: Young! Remus Lupin x McKinnon! Fem! Reader
Word count: 3.5k
Summary: Y/N McKinnon and Remus Lupin are the definition of soulmates. Best friends since forever, they know each other to the smallest detail. But a Wizarding War threatens to tear them apart.
Warnings: canon-compliant, major character death (oops!), angst, fluff, best friends to lovers, love confessions, soft eyes, lots of hand holding, Jily
"What's a soulmate?"
"It's, uh, well it's like a best friend but more."
Y/N McKinnon was a soft soul. Remus knew this much, from the twinkle in her eyes to the shy smile on her lips. He knew that she was quieter than her sister, Marlene, but was never afraid to voice her beliefs. He knew that she liked to read classics, burrowing them from him. She always returned them as though they hadn't even been read feverishly. And he also knew that she was a lover of jasmine tea and of stars.
And she was also his best friend.
“Do they end up together?” she asked one morning as she sat beside him in The Great Hall.
Remus frowned. “Who?” he replied, putting down the still steaming cup of tea on which he was sipping. The sweet aroma of jasmine still lingered on his tongue. Her tastes were rubbing off on him.
Y/N huffed, rolling her eyes as she did so and thrusting a book in front of his eyes. Curved, intricate letters spelled Little women. “Jo and Laurie.”
A crooked smile blossomed on his lips. “Do you really want me to answer that?”
“No,” she said, as she turned to put some toast on her plate along with a few eggs.
Comfortable silence settled between them as Remus resumed enjoying his tea.
“I think they should,” she eventually voiced, after biting down on a toast.
“What?”
“Jo and Laurie. I think they should end up together. They’re best friends.”
Remus’ throat tightened and it seemed as though the world stopped moving. Best friends. He told himself that he shouldn’t read too much into it, they were just discussing a piece of literature, but then Sirius’ voice popped up in his head (“You’re really thick, Moony. She fancies you!”) and he was suddenly hyper aware of his thigh touching hers, and of his elbow touching hers and he slid away a few millimeters just to breathe. “Right,” he croaked out.
Maybe Sirius was right after all.

“It’s the one person in the world who knows you better than anyone else.”
Y/N could tell from the wrinkles in his eyebrows and the dark circles under his eyes that Remus didn’t sleep the night before. It was often that she found him in this state, staring blankly at the flames dancing in the fireplace of the Gryffindor Common Room. She never questioned him, she figured that if he ever felt the need to support his weight he’d come to her, letting his tears fall onto her shoulders.
She was patient, sitting beside him on the couch and watching his chest rise and fall with every breath he took. She counted them, listening in to his breathing and to the crackling of the fire.
At the tenth one, he spoke up, his voice resembling that of a broken glass. “I’m sorry.”
Y/N let her eyes roam across his side of the face. There were a few new scars slashing across the freckles. “What for?” she replied quietly.
Remus’ shoulders slacked. He opened his mouth to reply but no word came out.
“You don’t have to say anything. I know you’re going through something.” She let her cold hand fall against his warm one. He was always the one with the warmest hands.  “Take all the time you need, Rem. I’m not going anywhere. Whenever you need me, I’ll be here. Always here.”
Remus thought at that moment that he was lucky to have her. He wanted to tell her that, but words failed him. So, he settled on giving her a kiss on her forehead. A waft of roses tickled his nostrils and he immediately recognized her shampoo. Sweet and soft. Just like her.
She smiled, squeezing his hand. “I brought you something.”
Remus chuckled, turning his hand to wrap his fingers around hers. He was pretty sure his heart would burst out of his chest anytime now. “Really?”
She hummed, getting something out from her pocket. A silver wrapper rustled in her free hand, glimmering against the orange of the flames. A saccharine smell rose and enveloped them both. Chocolate. “I know how much you love chocolate and I saw how down you looked this whole day, so I just bought some from Honeydukes.”
Remus felt his blood rushing to the top of his head, his hands got all clammy and he feared that Y/N would figure him out. He lifted his eyes to meet hers. She bore a soft smile on her lips. “Wanna share?” he asked.
“I’d love to.”

 “It's someone who makes you a better person. Actually, they don't make you a better person, you do that yourself - because they inspire you.”
More than once, Y/N found that being with Remus made it all so much easier. Being with him erased the tumultuous barriers of the approaching Wizarding War. The Daily Prophet brought dark news every morning. She usually skimmed through those, before giving the newspaper to Remus, knowing he’d read it thoroughly. She’d then turn to exchange some girly gossip with Lily, Marlene and Dorcas (“Potter asked me out again,” Lily would say for the fourth time that week). Afterwards, Y/N would turn to throw a smile towards Remus, just so he could know she was still there with him.
This time though, she gripped the newspaper until her knuckles turned white. More than three muggle attacks occurred in the past few days and she was growing anxious. Remus got ahold of the newspaper, lowering it before lightly touching her hand. “Hey, you alright?”
“Do you ever wonder if we’ll turn out like him?”
Remus dropped his gaze to the headline of the Daily Prophet: “He Who Must Not Be Named strikes again, dark forces on the rise.”
“No. Do you?”
“Sometimes,” she sighed, slowly letting the newspaper fall into Remus’ hand.
His eyebrows furrowed. “Why?”
The newspaper was now on the table in front of them, the headline screaming at her, black letters taking up most of the page, a moving picture with houses on fire staring at her. “I’m just afraid that one day I won't be able to recognize myself. That I will look into the mirror and see a stranger, that things beyond my power will change me.”
Remus’ voice reached her ears in the form of a soft whisper. “I’m sure that’ll never be the case, Y/N.”
She turned to look at him, eyes glossy. “How can you be so sure?”
He smiled, meeting her gaze. “Because I know you. You’re one of the kindest people I know. If you are ever to get lost, I’m sure you would find your way. And if you don’t, I’ll be there to guide you.”
Her smile mirrored his, cold hands meeting warm ones.

“A soulmate is someone who you can carry with you forever.”
Years passed and soon enough, Y/N received the wedding invitation of James and Lily. The redhead delivered it to her in person, insisting she had to tell her something. Marlene was off to the Ministry with some work that day, while their parents were taking the tea in the back garden. She was just putting another kettle on, intending to make jasmine tea for herself, when Lily apparated at her doorstep. A knock was heard at the door, and Y/N was pulled from her wandering thoughts. She took wide strides, passing the moving pictures on the walls of her and her sister from when they were little, and opened the door. A kind smile and a mop of red hair greeted her.
“Lily! Hi! Come in, I was just making tea!” she said as she hurriedly hugged her.
“Thank you,” replied Lily entering the house and taking a seat on the couch.
“I’ll be right back! You sit here, alright?” said Y/N, just as she took off towards the kitchen. She pulled out two cups from the cupboard, intricate flowers gleaming on the porcelain. The kettle whistled and she took it off the stove, pouring the tea in each cup. The sweet aroma of jasmine enveloped her in warm embraces. “Would you like sugar or milk for your tea?” she yelled, hoping that Lilly heard her.
“Just sugar for me, please! Two cubes!”
“Coming right up!” She put two cubes in Lily’s cup and three in hers, before she turned to leave the kitchen, hands holding steaming cups.
“How’s Marls?” Lily asked as she saw her entering the living room.
“Oh, she’s alright. Busy with work. How’s James?” Y/N smiled as she took a seat across from her, in an old armchair.
At that, Lily blushed and gave her the envelope she was hiding in the pockets of her dress. Y/N threw her a confused look, before opening it, sparkling paper soft against her hands.
James Potter and Lily Evans cordially invite you to their wedding
Y/N gasped, before looking up at Lily, meeting her emerald gaze. “Oh, Lily! This is amazing! Congratulations!” Her gaze slipped towards Lily’s left hand, wondering how she didn’t notice the ring sparkling there. The stone had the same colour of her eyes. Emerald.
“I want you to be my maid of honour, Y/N,” Lily replied with eagerness, taking ahold of Y/N’s hands. “Please, will you be my maid of honour?”
“Of course I will!”
And this is how Y/N found herself giving the Maid of Honour speech in front of one hundred people (most of the guests were from James’ side, family and relatives. Lily only invited her sister, who unfortunately didn’t show up). She was growing hot under the attentive gazes of everyone, her dress starting to itch. Her eyes slipped across the crowd, until they met with honeyed ones. Remus. Her best friend. He gave her a reassuring smile. She cleared her throat. “I’m not going to say much. There isn’t really much to be said, when everyone can see how hopelessly in love they are with each other. I’m only going to say that I had the honour to see how their love blossomed, it took James six years to finally get a date with her, and another three to marry her but he did prove to be successful.” The crowd roared in laughter. Y/N’s eyes didn’t stray away from Remus. “Here’s to forever!”
The guests whooped and clinked their champagne glasses together, while Y/N got off the stage, knees buckling. Remus met her halfway, touching her arm. He was bearing a wide smile, his eyes twinkling under the low light. “That must have been the shortest Maid of Honour speech I have ever heard.”
She rolled her eyes. “How many did you actually hear?”
“Honestly?”
“Yeah.”
“None. Yours was the first.”
She smirked before a slow song started to play, couples shuffling to the dance floor, champagne long forgotten. James was bowing to Lily, asking for a dance and she laughed before getting ahold of his elbow and dragging him to the dance floor. Y/N smiled at the sight before turning to look at Remus.
He looked so achingly beautiful. His sandy hair was ruffled from the many times he ran his hands through it, honey eyes shining under the fairy lights, white shirt unbuttoned at the top and tie loosened. He was softly smiling at her and she felt herself melting. “Would you like to dance?”
She blinked before nodding. “Yeah,” she whispered, but she was pretty sure he heard her nonetheless. His warm hands touched her cold ones, guiding her towards the dance floor while walking backwards, not once taking his gaze off of her. They stopped at the edge of the dance floor, one of his hands slipping to hold her waist, the other still gently touching hers. He started leading them in a slow dance, humming under his breath.
It must have been the champagne getting to her head, because she found herself boldly asking the question that’s been plaguing her mind for years now. “Do they end up together?”
Remus twirled her before holding her closer. “Who?”
“The best friends.”
“You mean Jo and Laurie?” he asked, remembering their conversation from a few years ago.
“No, I mean us.”
Remus’ breath was caught in his throat. His hand tightened around her waist. “Do you want us to?”
She sighed, before meeting his gaze. “I thought I made this obvious, Rem.”
He blinked in an attempt to clear his mind. “When?”
“During our school years. Everyone caught on, except you.”
He suddenly felt out of focus. The lights were blinding him and he felt his feet dancing on nothing. The only thing grounding him was Y/N. “How long?” he found himself speaking up, his voice foreign to him.
Y/N remained silent for a second in his arms. “I think it must’ve been the third year.”
Remus almost choked. “Oh, love, we could have saved so much time,” he replied, before leaning down to capture her lips with his. She was softer than he ever imagined, her signature roses shampoo reached him in waves, getting him drunk and lightheaded. There was a hint of jasmine lingering on her lips and he almost melted when she wrapped her arms around his neck, bringing him closer. He pulled away to catch his breath, before leaning his forehead against hers. He was still drunk on jasmine and roses. “Forever?”
She smiled against him, pecking his lips. “Forever.”

“It's the one person who knew you and accepted you and believed in you before anyone else did, or when no one else would.”
Dawn was just breaking through when Remus Lupin stumbled through Y/N McKinnon’s front door, blood seeping through his shirt. She was awake, thoughts and worries of The Wizarding War weighing her down. She was just putting a kettle of jasmine tea on the stove when she heard Remus’ harsh breathing and screaming of pain. She stumbled out of the kitchen, knees melting at the sight of him so disheveled. “Merlin, what happened?!” she said as she rushed to him, supporting his weight on her shoulders and guiding him to the couch. She gently lowered him on the soft pillows.
He breathed in through his nose, wincing when his back made contact with the pillows.
“Stay right here, I’ll bring some water and a towel to clean those wounds for you, alright?”
He nodded in response but she was long gone. He let his eyes wander through the living room, gaze catching sight of several moving childhood pictures of Y/N and Marlene. There was one in which little Y/N was biting down on little Marlene’s golden hair. The sloshing of water and the rapid steps of Y/N brought his attention back to her. She knelt beside the couch, unbuttoning his crimson shirt and wetting the towel into the bucket of water. Her hands were shaking. She was trying to hide it, but Remus still saw. “This is gonna sting,” she mumbled, a tremor in her voice.
The wet and cold towel touched his slashing wounds on his chest and Remus felt as though a thousand needles pierced his skin. He hissed through his teeth. “I know, I know, I’m sorry,” said Y/N worriedly. “How did this even happen?”
He shyly met her gaze. “It was a full moon last night.”
Remus expected her to react differently, to widen her eyes and back away from him, to kick him out of her house, to break up with him. Instead, her eyes saddened considerably, casting down to the wounds. “Oh.”
He was surprised he found the courage to speak up. “Do you– do you think less of me now?”
She raised her head in a whiplash, eyes wide. “Why would I? You’re still my Rem, are you not?”
Remus’ lips parted and he stared at her, taking in her wild hair and noticing her tired eyes. Somehow, she still looked beautiful. “I love you,” he blurted out. “I love you, Y/N.”
She released a breath, leaning down towards him. Her lips met his in a short lived kiss. “I love you,” she replied just above a whisper. “I always will.”
The smell of jasmine traveled all the way from the kitchen to the living room, embracing them both in a sweet blanket of aroma.
⋅•⋅⊰∙∘☽༓☾∘∙⊱⋅•⋅
“ And no matter what happens, you will always love them. Nothing can ever change that.”
The Order of the Phoenix was meeting for the third time that month. Remus bore a skipping in his steps, despite the weight on his shoulders.  He would see Y/N again after a whole two weeks of not seeing each other. He left for a mission, while she remained in London, a promise held between them. He apparated at the Order’s Headquarters, before knocking on the door.
“Password?” Alastor Moody's voice came through.
“Lemon sorbet.” Albus Dumbledore was in charge of the passwords.
The door was opened for him and he greeted Moody with a smile. The man just acknowledged him with a nod of his head. “Come on in. The rest are inside.”
Remus advanced through the dark, dingy house before entering the rather poorly furnished living room. His smile weakened at the heavy atmosphere in the room. Everyone looked sullen at best. His gaze searched for Y/N but he didn’t find her.
“Where’s Y/N?” he asked, a worry starting to seep into his voice.
“You haven’t heard?” a glossy eyed Lily asked him.
“Hear what? And where’s Marlene? I don’t see her either.”
“The McKinnons are gone, Moony,” James spoke up, coming near him.
Remus awkwardly laughed. “Gone where? They stayed in London, didn’t they?”
“They’re dead, mate,” a tired Sirius said. “Voldemort got to them.”
Remus felt as though someone stole the earth from under his feet. The room was darkening around him, spinning in circles. His chest tightened and his vision stung and clouded. “No, that can’t be. Just two weeks ago, they were here. I talked to Y/N, she promised we’d get a house somewhere in the countryside and I promised her I’d buy her a proper ring and we’d–” his voice left him. “And Marlene too?”
No one answered him. It was understood.
He fell into a dusty armchair and cried. He let the darkness cloud his mind.

1995
Harry Potter was following his godfather in an abandoned waiting room at the station. “Sirius, what are you doing here?! If somebody sees you–”
Sirius turned to look at Harry. “I had to see you, didn’t I?”
“I don’t want to see you get shut in Azkaban,” Harry replied, taking a seat beside him on an old, tattered bench.
Sirius waved him off. “Oh, don’t worry about me.” He reached into the pocket of his old coat, which reeked of naphthalene. “Anyway, I wanted you to have this.” He handed him a yellowed photo. Familiar faces smiled up to him. Harry took it in his hands and studied it, recognizing his parents. “The original Order of the Phoenix,” Sirius went on explaining. He pointed to a blonde in the corner of the photo. “Marlene McKinnon. She was killed two weeks after this was taken. Voldemort wiped out her entire family. That’s her sister right there, Y/N.”  Harry’s eyes took notice of a petite woman, holding onto Remus’ hand and smiling up to him, before turning towards the camera. Remus leaned down to plant a kiss on her forehead before posing for the camera.
“Did Remus know her?” he asked, although he already knew the answer.
He heard Sirius sigh beside him. “Oh, yes. They were the best of friends. Soulmates. It broke him the day she died.”
Harry’s gaze slipped towards a couple in which he saw too much of his housemate and herbology enthusiast friend. “Neville’s parents,” he acknowledged.
“They suffered a fate worse than death, if you ask me,” replied Sirius. He then smiled sadly, looking at the photograph image of Lily and James Potter. “It’s been fourteen years and still a day doesn’t go by when I don’t miss your dad.”
Harry regarded the photo a few more moments, a pang in his heart at the sight of his parents happily together and still alive. “Do you really think there’s going to be a war, Sirius?”
His godfather pondered the question, before replying slowly. “It feels like it did before.”
The raven haired boy went to give him back the photo, but Sirius beat him to it. “You keep it! Anyway, I suppose you’re the young ones, now.”
Harry smiled, looking down once more at the forgotten faces of the original members of the Order of the Phoenix, his eyes again catching the sight of a red faced Y/N and a smiling Remus, before putting the photograph in his pockets. The Hogwarts Express was announcing its departure.

A/N: Hello! Thank you so much for reading! Just for reference, the soulmate quote isn't mine, it's from a TV show called Dawson's Creek, which I found interesting and sweet so I kinda built this fic around it.
The last scene of this fic used for inspiration is from the fifth Harry Potter movie, even though Alastor Moody is the one who shows Harry the photograph of the original Order of the Phoenix, not Sirius, but it was more accessible to me this way because I haven't reread the books in a long time.
Let me know your thoughts! Every kind of feedback is highly appreciated!
Also, if you'd like to be added to my tag list, just comment under this post or send me an ask! Lots of love xx

yes.
remus lupin x reader. 2k words.
drunk behavior, drinking, smoking, marijuana, mentions of death, vaguely nsfw.
It was cold and wet out. It was usually cold and wet just outside of London, but especially tonight. All there was to be done was read and sit unmovingly still while the rain pattered against the windows agonizingly. Tonight, [Y/N] was immersed in the pages of a muggle novel a friend from home had mailed. An Issac Asimov novel. It was pretty dense. There was a stiff glass of whiskey on the coffee table next to a stack of magazines and some pamphlet she’d been handed on the street.
[Y/N] thoughts kept drifting away from the pages of her book to her plants outside. She would surely have to drain them well after this. What a pain. She had a sip of whiskey. Another sip was sure to follow. On the second sip, she thought about Remus Lupin.
Remus Lupin was beginning to become a problem.
Another thing [Y/N] had stationed on the coffee table was the telephone that few of her friends rung up on. Remus was one of them. And Remus had stopped calling. It wasn’t as if she were counting the days, but it surely had been near a month since Remus last called.
It wasn’t as if he had to call over either. He didn’t most summers they were growing up. But it was different now because the world was different now. It was courtesy to call so you knew who was still alive. His name and jagged, scraggly face hadn’t appeared in any obituaries. [Y/N] was sad to consider that these were the sort of days where you had to check the obituaries.
She wouldn’t have had to check the obituaries if he would call.
Maybe she had done something wrong that made Remus not want to call. There was no particular event she could remember. She couldn’t remember the last time she’s seen him so why recall the last interaction. She downed the rest of the glass of whiskey next to the phone on the coffee table and abandoned the book with it too. There was no focusing now. There was only the steady rain against the windows to serve as a metronome for listing off her own shortcomings.
Ultimately, it wasn’t as if Remus had to call because it wasn’t like he was hers, or something. He was a friend.
But didn’t friends call?
There was a particularly huge crack of thunder. [Y/N] was not a fan of that.
Then there was a pounding knock at the door. The kind of knock one hears before the SWAT team swings in through the windows in films. Every hair on her body stood up.
She thought about the obituaries.
[Y/N] procured her wand and attempted to walk silently towards the door (with a charmed chain and a deadbolt). She leaned into the peephole.
And then undid the chains and deadbolts in a flash.
“RJ?”
Sure enough, Remus John “RJ” Lupin looked back at her, bruised and scabbed more than he normally was.
“Hi. I have to tell you something.” He slurred.
With a wand still extended, [Y/N] still had something to do. “RJ, tell me the last time you called me.”
Remus’s big green eyes widened and rolled back as he tried to remember. The only thing he could think about was how he had promised to call.
But he hadn’t.
His wet hair hung around his eyes, under which bruises were beginning to form and swell. His eyes were clear as the eyes of an intoxicated man could be, though. Remus’s thick Welsh accent always got thicker when he was drinking and he muttered:
“I don’t know, [Y/N]. I last saw you three weeks ago. You smoked with me behind Three Broomsticks. But I’m thinking I was probably supposed to’ve called you at least a week ago, hm?”
[Y/N] lowered her wand. The Three Broomsticks. That was when she last saw the tall boy. How could she have forgotten? He’d leaned over and kissed her right on the mouth between puffs on a joint. And he’d said I’ll call you next week and we can go for drinks. If you’ll have me. “Alright, get in.” So much for memorable.
She grabbed Lupin by his jacket collar and pulled him in. He was a little unsteady on his feet. She helped the man discard his shabby wet coat to the coat rack beside the door. He’d once said it would be a useless purchase. Fuck him. “I thought you died,” she smirked. [Y/N] stepped back to look at him properly.
Aside from his old, alluring scars he hated so much, there was a black eye beginning to form, a split lip, and a handprint on his neck. That was just what was visible. Merlin…
“You look—“
“Ah, ah. You should see the other guy.”
She hit him hard on the arm. Remus winced with an ‘oi, watch it.’
“‘The bloody hell happened to you, RJ?”
There was a second of silence. “Uh. You did, sort of. But listen, I have to—.”
“Me?”
She had been assuming this was something he’d done to himself, out of his own control as always. But he wouldn’t normally show up on her doorstep after a full moon gone awry. She didn’t think it had even been a full moon.
“I mean. It was my fault. You didn’t do anything. I did. Obviously,” Remus sighed. “Jeez. Fuck me, do you mind if I smoke in ‘ere?”
“‘Course not,” [Y/N] moved toward the kitchen counter and pulled herself up on it. “You can have a smoke after you come over here and let me clean you off. Rem, really.”
Remus already had a cigarette halfway out of the pack and his shirt sleeves rolled up. He rolled his eyes, but left the pack on the counter as he limped over. Remus look like he hurt everywhere. The state of his sleeves revealed some unfortunate bruising on his knuckles and hands. His dirty boots lead him across the carpet to the tile of the flat kitchenette where [Y/N] sat. His eyes were ringed red, but his brow still seemed determined.
“So you got into a fight the muggle way with some bloke? You went to a muggle bar or something?”
Remus couldn’t meet [Y/N]’s eyes while she soaked a rag in warm tapwater and started cleaning off his cuts and nicks.
“I went to the Leaky Cauldron with James. We just wanted a few drinks. I promised I’d speak with him about… But I also wanted to ask him his opinion on… But, shit, see, I—“
“You smoke a lot tonight?”
“Yeah.”
“You can barely string a sentence together. You’re getting muck on my tile. You smell like pot.”
“Don’t pretend you don’t like it, sweetheart.” He took a step closer and pressed his thighs on the counter that separated them.
[Y/N] lowered the rag. This was more unusual still. Remus wasn’t a particularly direct person. And he didn’t do petnames. He only acted in a vaguely meaningful way when he was stoned. And when sunrise came, he would clam up and dodge phone calls again. Remus would be gone in a cloud of cigarette smoke before [Y/N] even woke up.
“What’s your problem, Remus,” she said. Remus raised an eyebrow. She only ever called him RJ, really. “You’re my best friend, you like me, you ignore me and then you show up at,” she glanced at her watch. “Almost one in the morning so I can patch you up because you got into a scuffle with some guy that doesn’t like Velvet Underground, or because Sirius needed backup. Or what. I can’t keep doing this.”
Remus sighed and put his hands on either side of her on the counter. He dropped the act as he leaned his battered body back and away from [Y/N]. “Remember Rosier?”
“Yeah, obviously.”
“He was at the Cauldron tonight. And I was talking about how the fuck I’m supposed to try to land you, and Rosier… He comes over to me and James. He wouldn’t shut up about you. Your looks, blood-status, your… body,” Remus lifted his gaze to meet [Y/N]’s. Carnal. “I couldn’t take it. I wanted to murder him.”
[Y/N] halved a smirk and lifted the rag to his face again. “I’m sure you did.” She said has he pushed her hand away.
“[Y/N], I’m not going to just sit there and let some posh tosser talk about the girl I’ve wanted since I was fifteen. I just… I felt like I blacked out and then Prongs was pulling me off and… And I walked here.”
“You’re crossed. You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Would you fuckin’ listen to me!” Remus shouted. “Stop deflecting. I’m the one that deflects. Please. I’m tryna tell you that I met up with my childhood best mate because I wanted to ask him for some help. Because I’ve been trying to figure out how to take you out for years and I get too scared, or too stoned, or in my head or not enough. Whatever. Please. I’m talking too much.”
[Y/N] eyebrows furrowed with uncertainty. “Please what, RJ?”
“Please let me kiss you proper.”
“And then what?”
“I…”
[Y/N] sighed. Remus always put up this front of emotionlessness. Cool and breezy. He was the unreadable one in his miserable band of brothers in school and he still was. “I’m sorry, lemme just patch you up and you can take the floo.”
“No. Let me stay here. And let me keep coming back. And… and I dunno, let me take care of you. Take you to the cinema. And buy you tickets to the Spinning Goblins show you were talking about. Listen to you complain about that asshole from the shop. Oh, and go to work parties with you. And, like, share an ashtray with you. All the normal stuff. I’ve wanted that since I was a kid. Don’t make me wait any longer. It’s my own fault I’ve waited so long. If you’ll have me.”
“Will you be here when I wake up? Or are you just gonna keep dodging me?”
Remus blinked. “I’m not going anywhere.”
“Then kiss me proper.”
“Really?”
“Yes.” [Y/N] rolled her eyes and grabbed Remus’s shirt collar that peered out from underneath his jumper and pulled his lips onto her own. He was damp and tasted strongly of cigarettes, marijuana and the pints and firewhiskey he’d downed. But the smell of his shampoo and parchment lingered. He always smelled of old parchment and his fingers were always stained with ink. [Y/N] had always wondered what he was writing all the time.
Those same bruised and ink-stained fingers came around the back of [Y/N] neck to tangle in her hair, holding her impossibly tighter. Remus’s grip was vice-like and permanent. His mouth was pressed against hers so completely that they would be one person if he were any closer. He wanted to prove how badly he wanted this and that he wasn’t going anywhere.
“‘Want you.” He muttered against the lips that were growing to be as bruised as his.
“Why, Mr. Lupin...”
Remus kissed down her neck desperately slow. “No, shut it. Not even like… I just… want you. All of you,” he murmured between kisses. “I want you to be mine. Or the other way ‘round. For real.”
[Y/N] let out a moan as his lips met her collarbone. Her fingers slid down his spine. “Yes. Yes. Yes.”
“Yes?”
“Yes. You want me to say it again?”
“Yes.” She felt the word vibrate against her chest.
“YES.”
“Thank fuck for that.”
As Remus kissed his way across the plane of her chest back to her mouth, she stopped him before one last kiss. “Come on, dry clothes and a smoke. Then bed. We’ve got a long day tomorrow?”
“That so?”
[Y/N] laughed. Merlin, he loved that sound. Clear as church bells with a gentle wheeze. “Yes.”
“What’s on the agenda?” He smiled dumbly.
“Making up for lost time, stupid… Just… Say yes.”

Remus Lupin - Secret Santa
Pairing: !young Remus Lupin x reader (not specified in gender)
Warnings: none that I can think of, please let me know otherwise
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the heart of Hogwarts, a group of friends known as the Marauders, including Sirius Black, James Potter, Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, and a few members from the opposite side of the Hogwarts spectrum, Lily Evans, Marlene McKinnon, and Dorcas Meadowes, formed an unlikely bond. At the center of it all was you, a pureblood who had grown up next door to Sirius, both of you rebelling against your families' pureblood ideologies.
As December drew near, Lily proposed a Secret Santa gift exchange to bring some holiday cheer to their group. The drawing of names turned into a comical affair, with Sirius and James bickering about who got to pick first, and fate determined that you would be tasked with finding the perfect gift for Remus.
The challenge, however, was to find a gift that captured the essence of the enigmatic young werewolf. His interests were multifaceted, and your desire to impress him made the search all the more challenging. In the end, you decided to create something personal and meaningful.
With hours spent in the Gryffindor common room, your dormitory and the muggle studies classroom, you crafted a mixtape. It was a collection of songs you cherished and those that subtly hinted at your growing feelings for Remus. Each track was carefully chosen to convey your emotions, a secret message encoded in the lyrics and melodies.
The creation of the mixtape became an all-consuming project. You spent long nights putting it together, pouring your heart into every song selection. As a result, you found yourself spending less time with the group, which didn't go unnoticed by the boys.
Sirius, James, and Peter grew increasingly suspicious of your newfound absence, whispering amongst themselves. They wondered if you had a secret boyfriend, which they agreed would be disastrous for the delicate dynamics of the group.
One evening, James and Sirius cornered you in the common room, their expressions a mix of worry and suspicion. "Alright, what's going on?" James asked, his voice tinged with concern. "You've been disappearing quite often lately. Is there something you're not telling us?"
You tried to come up with a plausible excuse but found yourself at a loss for words. It was then that the knowing eye could notice a shadow of jealousy in Remus's eyes, though he kept it well hidden. He cared for you deeply, and the thought of you having a secret boyfriend, like James and Sirius were guessing, was unsettling.
But before you could respond, Remus intervened, his tone calm but firm. "James, Sirius, give them some space. We all have our secrets, don't we?"
Their curiosity satisfied for the time being, James and Sirius nodded, albeit begrudgingly. Still, they couldn't help but exchange knowing glances when you left the common room.
Finally, after weeks of secrecy, the day of the Secret Santa gift exchange arrived. Gathered by the common room fireplace, you watched as each member of your group exchanged their presents. The air buzzed with excitement and laughter as they discovered their gifts.
Remus watched his friends exchange well-thought-out presents, but he was oblivious to your nervousness as you waited for your turn. When the time came, you handed him the small, wrapped package, your heart pounding.
As he carefully unwrapped the gift, the others were too engrossed with their own presents to notice what was happening between you and Remus. When he pulled out the cassette, he looked at it with a mix of curiosity and confusion. "What's this?"
"It's a mixtape," you explained, sitting down next to him on the couch and showing him how to use it. "Press play, and the music will start. I also got some headphones for you"
You shared a glance, he offered you the other earpiece, and soon the enchanting melodies started filling your ears. You both sat there, side by side, as the music played, the lyrics echoing the emotions you couldn't express with words.
Over the winter break, Remus continued to listen to the mixtape. He carried it with him wherever he went, cherishing the thoughtful gift you had given him. The songs became a constant companion during the long, lonely nights of the winter holidays.
Upon your return to Hogwarts, the two of you found a quiet evening in the common room. You noticed the mixtape nestled in Remus' sweater pocket. He caught your gaze, a soft smile on his face. "I've never received such a thoughtful gift. It means a lot to me."
He got the mixtape out of his pocket along with some headphones. Smiling gently, he offered you one and put the other one in his ear.
With the music as a backdrop, your hands brushed against each other, and the closeness of the moment became overwhelming. Remus, his voice barely above a whisper, asked, "These songs... they mean something, don't they?"
You met his gaze, your heart pounding, and the moment was ripe for confession. "They do, Remus. They're about how I feel."
His eyes softened, and he reached for your hand. "I've been feeling the same way, but I wasn't sure how to say it."
Remus smiled tenderly and leaned in, his lips meeting yours in a gentle, heartfelt kiss. It was a moment that sealed the unspoken bond that had grown between you, a love nurtured by the mixtape that had brought you closer.
As the fire crackled and the mixtape played softly in the background, you and Remus found comfort in each other. It was a moment of realization and a new beginning, where the unspoken feelings between you were finally acknowledged. In the warmth of the Gryffindor common room, your love story truly began, and it was set to the soundtrack of the mixtape that would forever remind you of that magical night.
Currently hard at work with a wooden hook in one hand and a quarter finished woolen square in the other, yarning over and pulling through as quickly as you can.
You are in the middle crocheting your lovely boyfriend a sweater. Sure, it was ambitious to finish a sweater a few days before you planed to give it to him, but you were dead set on making him this — Plus you had already finished the front panel. The yarn is a gorgeous tan shade you thought would suit his personality perfectly. Found it in a small crafts store whilst visiting your muggle relatives and knew you had to buy some. Granted it was impulsive and you had no current projects needing this specific color, but it reminded you of Remus, so it was only right for you to buy it.
A couple hours later, and many breaks from her hand cramping, you finally finished the back panel and was beginning the first sleeve when it struck you — the best idea ever. You had the brilliant idea of putting tiny heart at the end of the sleeve so only he’d be able to see it. Yup you were a genius, you decided. The heart would be a blush color so it would blend in just enough to see it if you looked directly at it while not being too vibrant. Once it was on the inside of the wrist area, he walked in. There he was with his shaggy brown hair that somehow always fell right, his tall lanky stature, and his terrible posture. He smiles wide as soon as he spots you in an old armchair in the corner of the common room. Immediately you hide the work in progress behind your back, wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise now would we?
It was too late unfortunately, he has seen you with yarn and a hook in your hands and was immediately curious as to what you were making. He has always been a fan of the small bags or beanies you managed to weave up, so he wanted to know what this one was and why you hid it behind your back.
Striding over with furrowed eyebrows he asks
“Hey, what were you working on if you don’t mind me asking?” He plops down on the armchair beside yours.
“I do mind you asking actually” you reply with a slightly humored tone.
“Oh come on! I love your projects, please!” he drags out the end “Just let me see” He pleads now leaning over the small end table separating the 2 chairs, grabbing at your arm softly.
“No! I’m not gonna show you until it’s done!” You pull back your arm, crossing them and looking back at him with fake frustration.
“Please” He pleads “I’ll give you my love if you tell me”
“Hard pass” you say blankly, looking away to pretend to read some book left nearby.
Just as he was about to plead again, James, Sirius, and Peter walk in calling his name, looking to drag him into another one of their silly ideas. James spots him and makes his way over quickly. Before he gets another word out, he gets dragged by James excitedly. Finally, some peace in here. As soon as he’s out of sight, you get back to work. After maybe another hour or so, you turn in for the night. With a cramping hand and a bundle of woven scraps in your hand you walk into your dorm, crashing onto your bed. You’re alone for maybe 10 minutes before your boyfriend finds you and takes you into his arms.
“You gonna tell me what you were making now?” He asks playfully.
“Shhh stay quiet pretty boy, I’m tired” you mumble into his chest.
“Alright fine" he tucks your hair aside "But only because you’re tired” he sighs dramatically before burying his head into your hair.
Next morning he invites you to watch Sirius eat some weird candy they found, but you decline to finish the sweater, and you do. With a rested mind and a no longer cramped hand you were back at it again, crocheting peacefully with Remus in mind to motivate you. Doing the last stitch which hides the last yarn end, you hold it up to look at it in whole. A stranger would know it was handmade, but it was still done well enough to think it’d be stocked in a small store that sold that kind of thing. Smiling, you go to wrap it.
You fold the sweater neatly in a box along with a couple of his favorite chocolates. Maybe it was overkill since it wasn’t even Christmas, but who can blame you? You were excited and he deserved it. Wrapping the box in a simple sparkly pink wrapping paper you had lying around and tying a nice white bow on it, you write a nice card to tuck in the bow.
With the gift neatly enough wrapped, you sneak into his dorm to find his bed. There, you set down the box and smile. You hope he likes it, wait no, he better like it. Walking back to your dorm you see, who other than the Marauders walking to back to their dorm. You smile to yourself and speed walk back to your own dorm.
Maybe 5 minutes pass before you get a certain brunette boy knocking at your door. Opening it with a smile you see him holding the opened box with a matching smile on his gorgeous face.
“Was this you?” He asks despite knowing the answer.
“Hmm I dunno, do you know any girls who crochet you things?” You tease lightly.
He matches your grin "Maybe"
“Well who’s this lucky gal?” You try to suppress your smile now, but failing quite miserably.
“Some pretty girl right in front of me” His cheeks tinted pink now.
“Well do you like it?” You drop the bit, now slightly insecure.
“Like? It’s my prize possession now! I mean you made me this? I know why you wouldn’t tell me what you were making now!” He rambles slightly letting himself into your empty dorm.
“If you love it so much try it on!” He hurriedly pulls off his current sweater and pulls yours from the box and pulling it on himself. He adjusts, feeling the material before putting his hands on his hips, posing for you. You giggle, and he swears he’ll do that a million times just to hear it again.
“Fits perfectly” you say walking towards him to examine it on him.
“Of course it does, you made it how could it have any flaws” he flirts. Rolling your eyes you pick up your polaroid camera to snap a shot of him in your, first of many, sweater. He sees this, smiles, fixes his hair till he catches a glimpse of blush yarn and looks at his sleeve again with adoration at the tiny heart. Then there’s a flash in front of him. He turns back to you grinning and pulling out the photo. Waving it a bit to develop faster, you look at the photo. It’s a perfect shot, so genuine. It’s him looking at the small heart with slightly furrowed brows, a small smile on his face, adoration in his eyes, and pink dusting cheeks. He walks over to look at it too.
“You’re so handsome” You say dragging out the last syllable, teasing lightly when he grabs it from you to look at it. Looking at it he smiles fully now and places it down on the closest desk. Pulling you into a hug he mumbles into your hair.
“Thank you so much, dove. I love it, it’s the best thing I’ve ever gotten.” Your cheeks become hot and you bury your head into his chest further.
“I’m just glad you like it.” You smile into his chest.
Midnight rain | Remus Lupin x Slytherin! Reader|
Tumblr media
Prompt/inspo:” Midnight rain” by Taylor Swift. Maybe a bit of “you're losing me”.
A/N: Maybe I’ll make part 2? First official fic I’ve written so might not be the best. Not edited.
Warnings: Some cussing (very little), first person POV, once again not edited, so bad grammar and potentially bad spelling. A little bit of out of character Remus and a bit of angst?
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
“Why are you doing this? Com’n… did I do something?”
I could smell burnt wood and chocolate off of him, he wrapped his arms around me as I continued to do my homework. Homework that I desperately needed to finish.
“No, I just need to get this done Remus. Give me a minute.” I say, I get up and out of his arms, to walk over to my bookshelf looking for a book for transfigurations.
“Give it a break Y/N.” I looked at him for the first time tonight. His hair was a bit of a mess, he also looked tired, and you could see his eyes were a bit sleepy. He was in a sweater that Sirius gave him last year for Christmas and baggy jeans, something we could only wear on the weekends of hogwarts. “You’ve been studying 24/7, I haven’t talk to you in fucking days. And if we have talked all you do is reply with one word responses.”
“Remus. I’m trying to finish this. I’m just busy, I have things to do.” I say in a bit of a snappy voice. I just needed to get this homework done so I could get the rest of the weekend and following week off. But it was difficult chasing that outcome when you were constantly bombarded with requests from others.
“You’ve been busy ignoring me. Just stop for a few hours. Come sit with me, play chess with me, something!” He exclaimed, he looked hurt, his hands were in slight fists, not in a mad way but a desperate way.
“Like I said, I need to finish this. I’ll be done in a bit, just give me a minute. Just because you have everything done and set doesn’t mean I do! Just please Remmy. Give me a bit.”
He looked at me with desperate eyes but then slightly turned away to pick up the stuff he put on the desk. “Fine. I’ll see you… I’ll see you when you’re finally done.” He looked at me one last time and then went out the door without another word.
I put the book back on the shelf and walked over to my desk, I had a bit more pages to go and then I’ll be done. I’ll talk to him tomorrow if I end up finishing by tonight.
ˏˋ°•*⁀➷
“Did you finish the homework for transfigurations?” Severus asked me as we walked to breakfast.
“Yea, I got it done last night. Did you do the potions homework?” I asked as we walked into the great hall, we went directly to the Slytherin table where Regulus and his friends sat.
“No, it’s not due until Friday. Did you finish it?” Severus asked, he smiled at me and continued. “I don’t even think I have to ask, do I?” He started to put toast and eggs on his plate as he talked.
“Of course. It’s better to get it done than wait. Hi Regulus.” I replied to Severus before acknowledging Regulus.
“Hi miss overachiever. How’s your guy’s morning?” Regulus asked, he looked between Sevurus and I. I laughed slightly before replying,
“My morning is nice so far, do you guys have any plans today? I need to go to Hogsmeade later so I can pick up a new book and quill, would you guys like to join me?” I asked, I finished my toast and eggs so I started to get up. I was waiting for them to reply but then I felt a tap on my shoulder that followed with a greeting. Turning around I was faced with Remus. “Oh. Hi.” I saw smiling a bit. I gave him a kiss on the cheek before pulling back. “Do you need anything?”
“I wanted to talk to you, can you come to the hall with me? Just for a bit.” He said pulling my hand a bit so I could move with him out of the great hall.
“Uh, yea sure.” We walk out of the great hall into the side corridors, it’s pretty cold in them due to it being mid winter.. “What do you need to talk about?” I ask as we face each other.
“I wanted to know if you wanted to go to dinner with me tonight,” He asked “I’m sorry for getting mad last night, I know you want to finish those things but sometimes I miss you. So will you go to dinner with me?”
I smiled before replying, “of course. And you don’t need to be sorry, I know I work a lot but I need to finish and do things like that.” I say pulling him closer. I smile up at him before giving him an actual kiss this time. I could feel him smile into the kiss as he put his hand on my waist.
This isn't something we do a lot, especially in public, people have and are very reluctant on a Slytherin and Gryffindor dating. It was hard to get both of our friends to fully accept but overall now it’s fine. But we still take precautions which means little to no PDA In Public. “I’ll see you tonight then? I can get you at 6:35?.”
“Yes Mr. Lupin. 6:35 is fine.” I say before walking away back into the great hall so Regulus, Severus and I can go to hogsmeade.
During dinner with Remus ~
“Well I mean I don’t know… maybe just go with the flow? Settle down?” Remus said he was in an old band tee that fit him oversized. We sat in a slightly dim ThreeBroomSticks while eating dinner.
“Settle down? Like…” I said kinda surprised, we talked about life in the future before, getting married and having kids. But I thought we would wait, not something right after hogwarts. I had plans and dreams to chase, I wanted to be known, and known in a good way and not in a bad way.
“Yea, settle down. Do you not want that? I thought you did.” He said he titled his head looking a bit sad and worried. He put down his fork and looked at me with his full attention.
“Yeah I did… but like right after hogwarts? Don’t you think that’s too soon? I want to travel and work, I just think we should wait.” I said slightly confused.
“Why wait? James and Lily are doing the same, and I bet they’ll still travel and work.” He wasn’t mad when he said this, but I could tell he was slightly offended. He pulled back his body so he would lean back onto the booth chair and crossed his arms. His face was slightly hurt but more so confused.
“But that’s James and Lily. They’ve said it over and over again that they don’t have anything big, they don’t have any big goals or dreams they want to complete. I want to and need to go after my goals, I don’t wanna settle down just like that, Remus. I want to make a name for myself.” I exclaimed. For me it was clear, I had goals and priorities, I wanted to work and do something meaningful for my life, I wanted to have a life that didn't revolve around a husband and kids. I didn’t wanna be a stay at home wife or a stay at home mom, I wanted something more, I wanted to chase that fame to make myself a name.
“Its always about the fame for you isn’t it? Why do you need to be known far and wide? Those people won’t know you for who you are, I do. We talked about this, do you really not want this? Or that? Any of what we discussed?” He said, this time it was with anger however not loud, no one was really in here with us besides the servers and the bartenders so it wasn’t causing a scene.
“I want something for myself! Why is that so foreign? It’s not like I don’t want the stuff we discussed, I just assumed that we would wait a bit.”
“Y/N. Answer me honestly. If I were to ask you right now, if you wanted to marry me, would you say no?”
Once again I was surprised. I didn’t expect him to ask that. He looked at me with curious hurt eyes, it wasn’t something you see often from Remus. He was quiet and more closed off, so emotions vivid from his eyes weren't a very often thing to see. Nonetheless I didn’t know what to say, I knew what I wanted with my life but I didn’t want to throw his “proposal” away like nothing. Everytime I wanted to say something it didn’t sound right, or it didn’t come out. Eventually after opening my mouth slightly and then closing it once again Remus scoffed.
“Say something Y/N, choose something! Come on… really?” He said desperately. He looked at me as if I just killed him after I didn’t respond. He ran his hand through his hair before he got up and walked out, he didn’t look back once. He left.
I sat there confused on what to do. Does this mean we’re done and over? Did I just ruin everything? Did I lose the love of my life or was it not going to work? Was I crazy to want a name for myself?
I got up and paid, and I started to walk out the door. It was late, extremely late. I opened the door and it was raining. Midnight rain.
Remus walked into the library, aiming for the back corner. The place the two of you always met up at during your time away. It was one of the few places and times where it was just the two of you, not your friends.
He spotted you writing something, huddled over paper and books at the window. He came up behind you and placed his stuff down besides you. You looked up, tilting your head back to look at him. He smiled at you, watching your upside down face smile back up at him. He leans down and pecks your lips.
Then he sits down beside you and glances at the papers in front of you. He notices different moon phases in the books, and looks at you again. “What are you working on, love?”
“An astronomy assignment. It’s actually really interesting.” You smile and look down at the book. You show him a calendar in your book. Each day showed a different moon, going through the cycle. Each new phase on each day. He couldn’t help but cringe a little at the depictions of the full moons. He rightfully despised them. You flipped the page and revealed yet another one. “The library has the moon phases of every day dating back centuries. It’s said that the phase of the moon on the day you were born and the day your soulmates were born should make a full moon. The closer to a full moon you are, the more likely that person is meant to be in your life.”
He smiled a little, glancing at the different moon phases. He looked at you and raised an eyebrow. “So what’s this assignment, love?” He asked. You smiled and nodded at your papers.
“I’m glad you asked. I have to go through all my friends and find all our moon phases. Then I have to find out who is my soulmate. See, I have transparent paper and I’ve been working on it for over an hour.” You explain. Remus scoffs and raises an eyebrow.
“An hour?”
“Hey, I’m going through centuries of moon phases here,” you say, smiling. Then you look at him and find him glancing between your doodles. “I was about to find your birthday.” He looks at you again with wide eyes. He blushes a little and shakes his head.
“It’s a silly moon thing, I don’t need the moon of all things to tell me you’re perfect,” he says. You smile a little and kiss his cheek.
“I know that. But, it’s still cute. Look, I already did Lily and I. And James, and Marlene,” you say and show him the different drawings. Then you roll your eyes as you show him the Sirius one. “So far Sirius has come the closest. I think I won’t tell him, he’d never shut up about it.” Remus scoffs and nods, but he can’t help the sinking feeling in his gut as he looks at it.
Remus loved Sirius. He was best friends with the boy. But, Sirius was more of a flirt. He knew Sirius was more conventionally attractive, especially compared to Remus. He was insecure about his scars, his awkward height, his… problem. He’d always been nervous about introducing people to his friends, especially Sirius. He thought the people would always like him more.
But you’d all been friends since first year. And you’d chosen him regardless of everything. He always had to remind himself of that, and you did as well.
“Alright, March 10, 1960,” you mumble, flipping through the months. His chest clenches with nerves. He pressed his lips together as he looked over your shoulder. “A waxing gibbous.” You smiled when you stopped, and glanced at him. Then you give him a pointed look. “Doesn’t matter, eh?” You ask, raising an eyebrow. He rolls his eyes, a small smile playing at his lips.
“I just want to beat Sirius,” he says. You roll your eyes, a smile spreading across your lips. He kisses your cheek as you turn to the book again. You grabbed a piece of translucent paper, which already had a sketch of your birth moon on it. You pressed it against the illustration of Remus’ moon phase. You smiled but Remus couldn’t fully see it. He tried to remain casual, leaning back but he just wanted you to show him.
Once you’d finished tracing his moon onto the paper, you turned to him, smiling. “Bad news,” you say. His heart drops, but you grin and hand him the tiny piece of paper. “You’re stuck with me.” He creases his brow and looks at the paper in his hand. A perfect full moon. His eyes widen a little and he looks over your shoulder at his birth moon. He glances at your other drawings of yours as well, just to make sure they really line up, and they did. You smiled at him as he relaxed.
His whole heart expanded. You were his soulmate. He already knew that, of course, but still. It was a nice confirmation. You pressed your lips together before placing a hand on his wrist. His attention went back to you in an instant. You smiled at your boyfriend.
“Now… when you see a full moon, you can think of me. And how absolutely perfect we are,” you say with a smile. He can’t help but smile a little and look down at the piece of paper in his hand. You press a kiss to the tall boy’s lips and then wave at the paper. “Keep it. I can draw another for my class.” He looked up at you again, studying you for a moment.
He had no clue how he’d gotten so lucky.
“I love you.” You smile and put a hand on his cheek, before running a hand through his tousled hair.
“I love you too, Rem. To the moon and back.”
"girls like me don't come around that much."
———————————
Y/N Lykos hadn't been born werewolf. That much was obvious. But she wasn't bitten at an awfully young age, either; she was bitten when she was sixteen years old, in the Summer holidays between her fifth and sixth years. It was a shame really, because the event had occurred during what was supposed to be a pleasant holiday to the very North of Canada, to visit family. Her distant cousins who attended Ilvermorny had warned her about there being a couple wild werewolves in the nearby forest. If only she had listened.
A midnight walk wasn't such a bad idea, right? Just a little time to escape the stress of family gatherings, and ease the mind. Y/N really should have thought more logically than to take the forest path, especially considering her high grades and therefore intelligent brain. But, alas, she did not, and wandered down the snow-laden track with the ice crunching beneath her feet. It was eery, as aside from her cold shallow breaths, her footsteps were all she could hear. Everything was quiet. Too quiet.
Eventually, instinct got the better of her, so she turned tail to begin power-walking back to her Canadian family's hidden castle. They were wealthy family members; of course, Y/N didn't have nearly the same luxury, but she wasn't fighting for money back home, either.
In the turn of a second the silence turned to the sound of twigs and rustling of leaves from the trees just beyond the path. 'It's just the wind,' Y/N thought to herself. The memory of her cousins telling her about the werewolves suddenly hurried back, making her anxiously glance up to the night sky to check and try and feel some comfort. But, there it was in all its glory: the shiny full moon. Y/N felt her breath become shaky, shivers not just from the cold shooting up her spine.
A growl.
That was unmistakably a growl.
Maybe things would have turned out differently if she hadn't frozen in fear.
White fur flashed in the corner of her eye. And then the other corner after the feeling of a swoosh behind her. It was then Y/N's eyes locked on to shimmery blue ones, except they weren't pleasant shimmery. They were glaring into her very soul as if she was just a piece of meat. Which, in all fairness, was probably exactly what she was to it. All she could do was watch as it raised its claw, most likely to take a fatal blow to her, but was cut short by another white furry monster pummelling into Y/N's side and sinking its teeth into her thigh. She yelped in pain, and momentarily accepted fate, when she saw the first werewolf attack the second.
The pair began taking part in a deadly brawl, so Y/N took the opportunity to pull out her wand and send up a massive red flare spark, now the pain had brought her back to her senses. She knew doing any more magic than that could get her in trouble, so instead began limping away with her hands providing some sort of pressure to the wound. It was pure agony, and tears streamed from her eyes while she gained little to no ground.
She must have passed out and been found before the werewolves could cause any more damage, because she had woken up back in the room she had been staying in. The bite on her thigh had been healed over, but a scar that would remain forever was still settled there.
For a solid month after that, everyone had kept an eye on Y/N but wouldn't tell her why. She wasn't dumb, and had figured it out after researching werewolves. There was a good chance that she was a werewolf. In fact, there was a very slim chance she wasn't. Every single recorded werewolf bite case had resulted in the victim becoming a werewolf.
And, sure enough, she transformed on the full moon a couple days before sixth year, during which she accidentally injured her parents. They had contacted Dumbledore on the matter, and he told her he would discuss it in person with her when she was back at school.
Needless to say, Y/N was petrified of the damage she could cause, and the rest of her life as a fucking monster.
***
Y/N was punctual as always with getting on to the Hogwarts Express, meeting her best friend, Lily Evans, in one of the cabins.
"Hey, how were your holidays?" the red-head asked.
"Good," Y/N lied, "How were yours?"
"Great!" Lily's emerald eyes sparkled, "Sev and I spent a lot of time together down by the lake."
The train got going in short time, which was, of course, when the infamous Marauders decided to show up, led by James Potter who came to confess his undying love for Lily yet again. Except, when they all entered one by one with Peter coming in last, Y/N couldn't help but notice something different. Remus smelled good. Like, really fucking good.
His almond-coloured eyes pinned on to her as she stared up at him expectantly. She noticed as his nostrils shifted, as if he were sniffing something. Plus, the atmosphere between them had changed completely: before, it was normal, a sense of mild friendship during their brief encounters. Now, there was an unprecedented tension that couldn't be described.
"So, my Lily-flower, how is life treating you?"
"Bugger off, Potter," the red-head snapped.
"Hey, Y/N," Remus greeted, taking a seat beside her without thinking about it, "What did you do over Summer?"
"I- I went to visit my relatives in Canada," she said with a small smile, but all she could focus on was Remus' voice. Rowena, had it always been that deep and attractive?
"Right, come on, Moony. Evans has kicked us out," Sirius said, pulling Remus by the roughs of his collar. The lanky boy gave one more lingering glance to Y/N, before letting himself be pulled out by his friends.
Lily sighed at her, "Be careful, hun, everyone knows Lupin can be just as bad as the rest of them, despite his 'goody two-shoes' reputation."
"Yeah- I know. Did he always smell amazing?"
"Hm? What d'you mean?"
"Do you think he got a new cologne over the holidays?"
"I don't know."
"And his voice! Has he always sounded like that?"
"Godric, Y/N, are you feeling alright?" Lily pressed her hand to Y/N's forehead, "You actually find a Marauder attractive?"
She scoffed, "Don't act like you don't secretly return Potter's feelings," which made Lily's face match her hair colour.
***
"The password is... violet beans?" Y/N frowned, looking up at the statue curiously. Sure enough, it turned around, opening up a staircase that began moving upwards. She hopped on to it, allowing herself to be taken to the top without any required effort. An oakwood door was before her, so she tapped twice.
"Come in, Miss Lykos."
Y/N opened the door, to walk into the large and beautiful headmaster's office. She stared in awe around the room, as it was her first time having ever being allowed into that secluded part of the castle.
"I believe you are aware of what I have called you here to talk about."
"Yes, professor."
"Right, well, this isn't my first time taking care of a student such as yourself. By the way, I'm terribly sorry about the accident."
"It's- it's alright, professor."
"I have arranged for a secluded locked cellar just several metres into the Forbidden Forest that you can lock before transformation. The mind of a werewolf will not have the capacity to figure out the lock on it." Dumbledore gave her the directions. "Do you think that'll be alright?"
Y/N nodded, "Yes, thank you. I'm sorry for being an inconvenience."
"Oh no, never. You're only an inconvenience if you purposely try to bother me."
"Right, if that's all, goodbye, professor."
"Yes. Have fun settling back into Hogwarts."
Meeting with Lily back in the Great Hall for dinner, Y/N took a seat at the Gryffindor table since no one ever paid any mind to her being there. It's not like she was a Slytherin, after all. "Where've you been?" she asked.
"Oh, Dumbledore wanted to talk to me," she shrugged.
"How come?"
"I'm not too sure, I wasn't paying attention," she said. Lying was something she was quickly getting used to, and while Lily narrowed her eyes at her, she didn't comment further.
"I had my first potions lesson today," the redhead began, "Slughorn gave me constant praise for my amazing potion."
"And that's bad because?"
"It gets a little annoying, and I know it'll just make it hurt more if I fail."
Y/N nodded knowingly, "I had muggle studies and transfiguration today."
"I don't know why you even took muggle studies," Lily scoffed, "Your dad's literally a muggle."
"I like to see it from a wizard's perspective."
"I suppose... hey, have you seen Potter?"
"Why? Gonna confess your love for him?"
Lily slapped her arm gently, "No, he just hasn't pestered me all day... which means he's up to something."
"I'm here, my Lily-flower!" an all-too familiar voice called out, "Did you miss me?"
"In your sweet dreams, Potter."
"Ah, Lykos, darling, how are things going?" Sirius said, surprising her as she hadn't realised he had sat down right next to her.
"Fuck off, Black."
"Harsh."
James laughed, "Come on, Padfoot, Lykos' even more stubborn than Evans. You don't stand a chance."
"Shut up, Prongs."
Unfortunately, Remus was nowhere in sight.
***
If only Y/N had elected to bring her wand to the library with her, she wouldn't be in the dilemma she was currently: attempting to obtain a book on magic history from a significantly higher shelf than her. She had jumped a couple times, but had now paused to glare at the spine of the book as if that would inspire it to cooperate. It's a shame the library magic only worked when putting books back. That was when a familiar intoxicating scent wafted up her nostrils, followed by the presence of someone tall behind her, and then a tanned and scarred hand reaching for the book she had almost declared war on.
"You need this?" Remus' voice said softly, making Y/N turn around and flush. She nodded, nervously holding out a hand to take the book. "You really are short, huh?" he commented.
"You're just freakishly tall," she mumbled, but he heard easily and chuckled.
"You know we're in a magic school, right? You coulda just- ya know."
"I left my wand in my dorm."
Remus raised an eyebrow at her, finally handing over the book but still following her over to the table she had set up camp on.
"What do you want, Lupin?" Y/N asked, but didn't really care for the answer. He was there and that was all that was required for her heart to flutter.
"Nothing," he shrugged, taking a seat.
Y/N began reading a book as did Remus, who had picked a random one off the table. Of course, with her mind being distracted by the words on the page, she was no longer actively suppressing her instinct to shift closer to Remus on the sofa they were sharing. He had leant back against the backrest, while she was hunched over the table trying to ignore his intoxicating scent. Thankfully, when she had already subconsciously shifted a few millimetres, the sound of someone biting down on something hard made her head snap in the direction of the noise. Remus.
And he had chocolate.
He arched an eyebrow at her, knowing that she was eyeing the delicious chocolatey treat in his hand. "I don't share chocolate," he said, "Everyone knows that."
"I know-"
"But-" he cut her off, smirking a little, "-maybe I can make an exception." He snapped off a couple squares and handed them to her.
Merlin, when would this boy mature? But, hey, at least he was sharing his delicious snacks.
"Thank you," Y/N said with an extra sweet smile, accepting the chocolate and biting into it, "Shit, this is good."
"You never had Panselinos Chocolate before?"
She shook her head, "My mum always buys me the mainstream stuff."
"Yeah, but normally only a certain type of people like this chocolate."
***
"Fuck, Y/N, you alright?" Lily asked, jumping back after her arm brushed against her best friend's.
"What d'you mean?" Y/N replied, trying not to let her teeth chatter.
The redhead sighed, "You're in a DADA classroom with a roaring fire right there and you're freezing your tits off- hell, you're freezing my tits off! Seriously, are you okay?"
"Yeah, 'm fine. Just a little cold."
"Not only are you freezing up, but Lupin over there is burning up, and he's the furthest away from the fire- look at how he's sweating! He gets a fever every month, I swear."
Y/N glanced across the room at the lanky boy, just as he turned to look at her with her arms wrapped around her body in an attempt to retain any amount of body heat.
"Oh, Godric, he's looking at you!" Lily whispered.
"For a genius witch you are a bit of a Captain Obvious."
Just as soon as Remus had looked, he had looked away, and resumed with the assigned task. Y/N did the same, but not before taking a minute to squat dangerously close to the fire in a desperate attempt to warm up. She knew what symptoms she was experiencing: it was the first full moon of the school year that night.
Dinner was quite a stressful time, and Y/N kept glancing up at the magic Great Hall ceiling to check it wasn't dark yet. She was tapping the table in anticipation and had hardly touched the scrambled eggs she had reluctantly scooped on to her plate. The sickening feeling in her stomach prevented her from consuming any delicacy, other than the expected craving of very raw meat. Anxiously, she watched as the sky gradually turned to a pinky-orange, and decided that that was her cue to leave. Y/N lied to Lily and told her that she didn't feel well and was going to the infirmary. A special thanks to James Potter for flirting with Lily and therefore preventing her from offering to come as well.
Entering the gloomy Forbidden Forest was less nerve-wracking than Y/N had anticipated. But maybe that was because part of her felt as if she belonged there; after all, she was a monster too. The trap door was in the exact spot Dumbledore had said it was, and had a weird magical lock that she managed to work out quickly: she wasn't a Ravenclaw for nothing.
There was a provided safe for when she had stripped herself of her clothing and wand to lock them away safely overnight, and according to Dumbledore, the room was soundproof, so no one would hear her outrageous howls.
***
Madam Nosokoma, the school nurse, tapped gently on the trapdoor the next day, under which Y/N was lying exhausted, wounded and nude on the floor. She forced herself upwards to pull on a jumper and some shorts, before grabbing her wand and opening the door. "Hey, honey, how're you feeling?" she smiled.
"Tired," Y/N sighed, climbing up the ladder with all the energy she had left. Nosokoma supported her weight as she limped back up to the castle; the pink touch of sunrise brushing against the hints of blue in the sky. Just as she was helped through the doors of the infirmary, she laid her eyes on three of the Marauders crowding round an injured Remus on a hospital bed. They all turned to look at her, their eyes widening in shock at the bleeding scars littered all over her revealed legs, and the blood seeping through the woollen jumper.
Y/N didn't have the energy to acknowledge them all that much, but she was somewhat confused. Remus had always disappeared once a month, granted, but she had never paid much mind to it since they weren't close. Never in her wildest dreams would she have imagined he was getting injured. Almost like he was a werewolf.
The suspicions settled in Y/N's mind.
"Lykos, what are you doing here?" James asked, but all Y/N could give him was faint smile as Nosokoma began magically patching up her wounds. In fact, she had passed out by the time the bandages were done.
"Is she alright?" Sirius turned to Madam Nosokoma, sparing a glance to his bed-ridden friend of whom was also nearly passed out.
"She'll be fine, she's just had a rough night."
Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs exchanged glances, before looking at Moony to see he was fully out cold.
***
Remus woke up a couple hours later, as he was able to recover relatively quickly since he was so experienced. He laid his eyes on the bandaged sleeping girl a couple beds down from him, and the worst case scenario popped into his head. Had he hurt her? What if he had bitten her? Nosokoma was nowhere in sight, so he cautiously and painfully forced himself out of his bed to stand by Y/N's. Out of nowhere, Nosokoma appeared behind him, gazing down at the sleeping girl as well.
"Did- did I do this?" Remus asked, worry filling his glistening chocolate irises.
"No, Remus, you didn't," the nurse sighed.
He looked slightly relieved, but still confused, "Then what did?"
"That's not my secret to share."
"Okay..."
"Anyway, now you're up, you need to take the healing medicine, so we can get you back to class as soon as possible."
Remus was gone by the time Y/N was awake.
***
"Merlin, Y/N, where have you been?" Lily cried, practically throwing herself on to Y/N. It would have hurt if the wounds hadn't been magically healed over, the only remnants being the scars littered across her skin, that were covered by her chosen baggy school jumper.
"Oh... just the infirmary... I was feeling sick, remember?" she shrugged, taking a seat at the Gryffindor table.
"Yeah, if you define feeling sick as being covered in wounds and blood," Sirius, who was just a little way down the table, scoffed.
Y/N glared at him.
"You what?"
"I'll tell you later, okay? Not here," she replied. She knew she should tell Lily, her best friend, and also that she could trust her with such a hefty secret.
Lily narrowed her eyes, "Yeah... okay..."
***
"You're a- you're a werewolf?"
"Yes, an arctic werewolf- and you don't have to make it sound like an awful thing! I feel shit enough about it as it is."
"Right, sorry, it's just sudden information. Did you say you got bitten while you were in Canada?"
Y/N nodded, sitting down on the grass by the Black Lake and pulling her hands down her face. The Autumn breeze was nipping at her cheeks, but she was too stressed to think about the coldness in her bones.
"Hey, I'm- I'm so sorry you have to go through this..." Lily said, her green eyes laced with concern, "Is there- is there anything I can do to make it easier? Does- does it hurt?"
"I don't know, Lils... and, I mean, it's agony at first but then I black out and don't become conscious again til morning..."
"Animagus!"
"Hm?"
"Animagus," Lily repeated, "What if I became an animagus? My patronus is a doe, which is fairly large, and werewolves only crave human blood. I could help you while you're transformed-"
"I don't wanna put you in danger."
"I don't care, Y/N, you're my best friend! I'd do anything for you."
"Becoming an animagus is difficult."
"I'm sure I'll manage," Lily grinned, "I'm actually quite excited thinking about it- obviously it'll be illegal... I'll just keep it a secret til I graduate when I'll register myself..."
"You're planning a lot from such a brashly made decision."
"Eh, I've been wanting to become an animagus for a while. Now I have a decent excuse."
"Rowena, what would I do without you?" Y/N chuckled.
***
"I think I've finally mastered talking with this mandrake leaf in my mouth," Lily said, sucking on her tongue, "Thankfully the awful taste has disappeared now."
"I can't believe you've had that thing in your mouth all week. How do you eat? How do you sleep without choking?"
Lily shrugged, "I made a potion that I take before bed. It stops anything from going down my throat, other than air, of course. And eating isn't too hard if I push the leaf to the side."
"Ah, my dear Lily-flower, Lykos!" the voice of James called, making the girls turn to see three boys behind him. The Marauders.
"Great. Here's trouble," Y/N muttered. But, she had to admit, seeing Remus did make her go warm and fuzzy inside. The boys joined them in their position in the secluded corner of the library, which really begged the question of how the fuck did they find them?
-two minutes prior-
"Where is Lily?" James whined, trailing behind Sirius as they entered the library to find Remus.
"Maybe you should stop bothering her," Peter mumbled, silently walking behind James.
"There's Moony," Sirius grinned, ignoring the previous topic.
James immediately asked the wolf boy, "Do you know where Lily-flower is?"
"Probably with Y/N."
"Do you know where Y/N is?" James' eyes lit up hopefully, "You've taken a huge interest in her lately!"
Remus looked up from his book, before rolling his eyes, and scrunching his nostrils in a sniff. "Come on," he said, standing up to lead them between the aisles of the library.
"How much of a stalker do you have to be to recognise Lykos' scent?" Sirius laughed.
"Her scent is very distinct." They rounded a corner. "Here they are."
-present-
"Hello, Y/N," Remus smiled, sitting beside her.
"Lupin," she greeted.
"Godric, can't you just call me Remus?" he said. Y/N could tell it had come out unexpectedly, as he normally was quite reserved and much less straightforward around girls.
"O- Okay, Remus..."
He grinned.
Y/N glanced at the book he had carried all the way over, "What's that you're reading?"
"Oh, nothing-" he said, rereading the title of Werewolves: The Concept of Mating. She read the title for the first time herself, and looked back up at him to lock eyes.
"Can I- can I have a look?"
"Oh- uh- yeah... but I'm- I'm not finished reading it..." Remus handed her the book.
She flicked through the pages, skimming over each page until she found one that read Signs of Mating. Y/N paused, and cautiously began to read the bullet points that followed while Remus watched her.
• A mate's scent will be intoxicating and addictive to a werewolf. • The feeling of kissing a mate for the first time will send the mind to euphoria. • Werewolf mates can calm each other down during a full moon. • Something as simple as a mate's touch will instantly be calming. • In rare cases where a regular werewolf mates with an arctic werewolf, the difference in temperatures during the full moon phase will reach an equilibrium when they touch.
"I didn't know arctic werewolves existed," Remus said nonchalantly, "I've always found werewolves interesting."
"Yeah... interesting..."
He looked her up and down, not in a sexual way, but as if he were judging her character. "Why were you in the infirmary last week?"
"I just- I just took a fall," Y/N said, "Why were you in the infirmary?"
"Same as you," he said slowly, leaning closer, "I just took a fall."
"Come on, Flirty Moony," James called, evidently finished flirting with Lily for the time being, "We're off."
"Goodbye, Y/N."
"B- Bye, Remus."
When the Marauders had disappeared, Lily turned to Y/N with a mischievous look in her eyes, clearly suspicious of her and Remus. "So... what's with you and Lupin then?"
"Nothing."
"Yeah, that's what they all say."
"Okay, fine. Is it just me but is he really hot? Like really fucking hot?"
"I mean he's cute, yeah, but, Godric... has being a werewolf made your hormones rage or something?"
Remus hadn't taken the book back, and at Lily's statement Y/N couldn't help but glance down at the page she still had open in thought.
"What is it?"
Y/N handed the book over; she closely examined Lily's face while she read over the bullet points.
"You don't- you don't think...?"
"He's always disappeared once a month... he's covered in scars... he was reading that book... and he kept talking to me as if he knew..."
"Now that I think about it... it does make a lot of sense," Lily pondered, "In fact... it seems unlikely that he isn't a werewolf. But, wait... are you implying you think he's your mate?"
"...Yes?"
***
The tension between Remus Lupin and Y/N Lykos truly was something else: they would look at each other and feel their collective breaths hitch, and their hands would brush against each other and they would melt. Y/N didn't exactly know how to start a werewolf conversation, so left it, but, of course, the next full moon came around. It was the evening of the day of the full moon, and Y/N could feel her body freezing over. Lily had gotten too concerned and dragged her into the Gryffindor common room. McGonagall hadn't said anything as she was aware of Y/N's current condition.
Lily tried her best to wrap her best friend up in jumpers, blankets and with a hot chocolate by the fire, but Y/N was still shivering uncontrollably. She was showing no signs of warming up whatsoever. "It's- it's get-ting worse..." she chattered, curling into an even tighter ball, "I'm so- so c- cold."
The redhead looked around distressingly, until she remembered what she saw in the werewolf book about mates. If Remus was indeed a werewolf and also Y/N's mate, he would be able to equalise their temperatures. The Marauders were messing around at the other end of the common room, and Lily couldn't help but notice how Remus was practically passed out on the sofa, sweat droplets on his forehead. He was covered in ice packs, but they clearly weren't doing anything. "Y/N, I've got a better idea."
"What?"
Lily took the hot chocolate out of Y/N's hand and pulled her out from underneath the layers, dragging her all the way over to the boys while trying to ignore the fact her hand was freezing up. "Oh! My Lily-flower came to me!" James gasped.
"Shut up, Potter," she snapped, turning to Remus, "What's up with Lupin?"
"He's got a fever," Sirius said.
"Bullshit," Lily muttered, making all the boys' eyes snap towards her, including Remus'. She placed the hot chocolate on the table, and forcefully pushed Y/N to fall on to Remus' lap. If she hadn't been so cold, she would probably have blushed.
"Oh my Godric, you are literally a block of ice," Remus' eyes widened. He had never felt relief from his hot spells before.
"And you are so fucking hot," Y/N muttered, but immediately cringed at her choice of words. All the words to use for 'warm', and she chose the one with sexual connotations?
Thankfully, he said nothing on the matter, as he was too focused on the temperature relief he was finally feeling. Y/N glanced up in shock when she felt Remus' warm calloused hands cup her cheeks, but he wasn't looking at her. His eyes were closed and his head was resting on the back of the settee. She let out a small breath, feeling her blood warm up, which allowed a blush to rise to her cheeks. In a split second rushed decision, Y/N buried her face into Remus' chest, causing him to react by tightly securing her in his arms.
"Well then," James said, "Does this mean you will be hanging around with us more, future Mrs Potter?"
Lily glared at him, "In your sweet dreams."
"Is Lykos alright?" Sirius asked, seemingly more curious than concerned, "She looked like she'd just trekked through the Arctic."
"She's just got the shivers."
"Bullshit. What is it really, Lykos?" Sirius turned to look at the girl curled up on Remus' lap. Unfortunately, she couldn't respond, because she was fast asleep on top of the only source of warmth she required. Remus appeared to have drifted off as well.
***
"The sun's setting," James suddenly said, shaking his sleeping friend with a sense of panic.
"So?" Lily said calmly, trying to hide the fact she was worried that Y/N needed to get outside.
"So, we've got... plans..." Potter continued, managing to wake up both of the werewolves, "Moony, come on, it's almost dark."
"Shit," the boy cursed, carefully pushing a yawning Y/N off of him, "Sorry, I have to go."
Y/N's eyes snapped open as she finally registered what the others were saying. She, too, muttered a, "Shit," and jumped off the sofa to run over to the portrait hole. Lily didn't follow, since she wasn't yet an animagus, but the boys ran after her for a reason she was too worried to think about.
Once out the castle, Y/N sprinted down the grassy slope, nearly tripping on the way, to enter the Forbidden Forest. The Marauders watched from the top of the hill as she ran, piecing together what was happening. "You don't- you don't think she's...?" James trailed off.
"Yeah... Yeah, I think she is," Remus replied, "Anyway, we'll worry about that tomorrow."
They all nodded, before sprinting over to the Walloping Willow.
***
Madam Nosokoma came to collect Y/N earlier than she did the previous full moon, and as they walked up the hill, the boys were also supporting a wounded Remus on the way to the castle. "R- Remus..." she murmured, before passing out entirely due to blood loss and exhaustion.
The infirmary time went pretty much like the previous one, but what came after was different. Both of them were pretty sure that the other was a werewolf, but how exactly does one start up such a conversation? They weren't close enough to justify telling the other they were a werewolf for the sole reason of trusting them, and it's a little too insensitive to just ask 'hey, are you a werewolf?'.
And, so, the following month consisted of intense avoidance between both the Marauders and Y/N, since there were things that had to be said that couldn't be said. But, in more positive news, Lily successfully became a doe animagus, and was clearly ecstatic at her new ability. "I can help you now!" she had beamed.
Until, it was, again, the evening of the full moon, and Remus cornered Y/N in the library while visibly sweating. "Remus..." she mumbled, trying to suppress a shiver, "What-" she gulped, "-what do you want?"
"Come with me," he said, holding out his hand. Y/N glanced at the darkening sky outside, but still apprehensively accepted his offer, which allowed Remus to drag her out of the library. He dragged her all the way out of the castle, until they were outside standing on the grass.
"Remus- I- I have somewhere I need to be-" she said, watching the last bit of sun fall under the horizon.
"So do I," he said, tightening his grip on her hand, "What are you? Scared of the dark?"
"N- No-" she whispered, witnessing in pure horror as the white sphere peeked over into the pool of white-speckled navy blue.
"Y/N!" Lily's voice called from behind, followed by her grabbing Y/N's wrist and pulling her away from the boy, to drag her down to the Forbidden Forest in a sprint. The Marauders appeared behind Remus, and he spared them a glance paired with a frown, before sprinting after them. His friends followed suit.
There wasn't time to climb down into the cellar. The moon had risen quickly, and was shining down in all it's glory on to Y/N, who yelled, "Lily! Get back!" before collapsing on the ground in pain as she felt her bones crack and move.
The redhead quickly morphed into a doe, just as the Marauders arrived, with Remus falling on to the ground as well. James morphed into a stag, Sirius morphed into a black dog, and Peter morphed into a rat. Lily looked at them in shock, but most prominently at James who was a stag. She was a doe; he was a stag. She was torn from her thoughts at the sound of a growl from an arctic werewolf figure beside her, who was quite small but still deadly. Lily turned to what Y/N was glaring at, to see a larger brown werewolf, Remus, growling back at her.
Out of caution, she silently crept over to the other animagi, positioning herself beside the stag that was James. The werewolves let their front paws touch the ground as they growled more deeply at the other, ever so slowly edging closer and closer. Until, Remus suddenly stopped, and tilted his head as he sniffed the air. Y/N continued to growl, but didn't attack as he proceeded to approach her and lick her nose. That made her stop growling, and she backed up with a small whimper.
Remus barked, and began panting like a happy dog, making Y/N tilt her head. He got into a playful panting position, but snapped out of it when Sirius dared to come any closer. He growled at the dog, guarding Y/N behind him protectively. Lily decided to step forward, since she wasn't a canine and also a girl, so the chances were that Remus wouldn't see her as a threat. He didn't react to her, which allowed for her to approach her werewolf friend and rub her head affectionately against her.
The night was both the weirdest and easiest full moon any of them had ever experienced.
***
Y/N woke up with a start at the foot of a tree by the Black Lake, curled up in Remus' arms - something she did not expect. She gave a brief scan of her body, and was surprised (but relieved) to see that there were no new scars littering her skin. Remus was in the same situation. Their friends had evidently gone through the effort of getting more clothes for them, and draped them over their sleeping bodies so as to avoid public nudity.
She felt him stir next to her as she scanned the surrounding area and saw Lily asleep with her head on a sleeping James' shoulder, and Sirius and Peter also in physical contact with each other as they slept. The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon and the temperature was warm but breezy.
Y/N could truly say that she felt peaceful in that moment.
"Good morning," Remus spoke gently, rubbing his nose against Y/N's cheek.
"Morning," she replied, watching as he looked his body up and down for scars.
"Nothing?" he said in surprise.
Y/N nodded, "Nothing."
Remus's face stretched into the largest grin she had ever seen bestowed upon his face. His calloused hand soon touched her cheek and tilted her head towards him, allowing him a decent angle to conjoin their lips in a chaste kiss. Y/N's mind had never been filled with so much warmth and butterflies before that moment, and for the first time in his life Remus felt like he truly belonged.
They eventually pulled away when they heard movement from a couple of their friends around them. Sirius was waking up, and yawned as he sat up and groggily looked upon Y/N and Remus. He remained sleepy for a few seconds, before a sudden realisation appeared to shock him fully awake.
"Moony - you're not injured!"
Remus' face split into another grin.
"Merlin, did we actually get some sleep last night?"
His loud voice awoke the others sleeping underneath the trees.
"What time is it?" Lily asked, clearly not yet having registered she was asleep on James' shoulder.
"The sun's still rising, so around seven, I guess," Y/N replied.
"Lykos," Peter spoke for the first time that morning, "You're a- you're a... you're just like Remus."
"A big surprise... but not an unwelcome one if it keeps Moony calm on full moons," Sirius added, and it was only then James' eyes opened.
He gaged his surroundings, doing a double take when he noticed Lily still half-asleep on his shoulder: his gaze on her made her finally realise her position, and she shot up instantly, her face bright red.
Deciding against saying something to her, he looked towards Y/N, and said, "I mean, I guess Moony isn't the only Moony now."
A penny dropped in Y/N's head, and she couldn't believe that she hadn't made the connection before that moment. "Your nicknames are your animagi!"
"Took you long enough, Lykos," James said, making her glare at him.
"Believe it or not, Potter, I don't spend every waking moment analysing your lives."
"Except Moony's," Sirius added.
"We should head back up," Lily finally spoke, "Before too many people are awake."
Everyone agreed, and after Y/N and Remus had awkwardly pulled back on clothes, began tiredly standing up to trek up the grassy slopes to the castle.
"I can't believe it. This is the first time since I was turned that I haven't needed medical care after a full moon," Remus said to Y/N as they took the back of the group on the walk.
She beamed at him, "Well, it's only been a couple months for me, but I can still appreciate how nice this is."
"It happened over the summer?"
Y/N nodded, "While I was in Canada. I'm an arctic werewolf, if you hadn't figured that out."
"I had," he reached his hand out to grab hers, "I'm just so- so relieved. I've felt like a monster all these years because there's never been a way to calm me down while I'm turned, and I've been so so scared of hurting people."
She glanced up at him, to see him staring ahead at the grass.
"I haven't felt this peaceful and just- human- in so long."
"I don't think we're humans, Remus."
He chuckled, "Yeah, yeah, I know. But I feel like I have more control over myself now, which makes me feel more human."
"My life has changed so quickly in these last months."
"Mine too. I've been feeling more and more like a monster everyday-"
"Well, if you're a monster, then I'm a monster."
"You could never be a monster, Y/N," he said gently.
She scoffed, "Hypocrite."
"Let me finish what I was saying - I've been feeling more and more like a monster everyday... until now."
He gave her the warmest smile, paired with the kindest eyes she had ever seen.
"Well, I guess we can't ever be away from each other now - at least on full moons," she said.
"I think we're gonna be close to each other a lot more than once a month, love."
"What- what do you mean by that?" She watched with widened eyes as Remus began laughing.
"You know exactly what I mean," he winked, before breaking into a sprint up the hill.
"Moony, get back here!" she yelled after him, beginning to run as well.
Soon, all the others of James, Sirius, Lily and Peter began running as well, yelling questions of why they were running, but laughing all the same.
And just like that, the new exciting years of friendship, self-confidence, and love began for them all, but especially Remus and Y/N.
hi lovely<3 5 (holiday sweaters) w remus🥹
2023 Holiday Blurbs
It was fairly obvious to everyone who met him that Remus Lupin was a lover of sweaters, and you, who saw his closet every day, are able to confirm this as a fact. It didn’t matter if they were worn in or hand made, old or expensive, 6 years old or 6 months old, Remus loved to wear a sweater. It was practically his uniform in the colder months at this point, regardless of what the day would bring.
Despite all this, he wasn’t a fan of holiday sweaters.
It didn’t matter who tried to convince him to buy a silly, matching holiday sweater, he always refused. There had been one time, a few years back, when James had a brilliant idea for a group holiday card, and he and Sirius practically had to wrestle Remus into the ridiculous sweater they picked out for him. In the end, he didn’t even wear it, and James scrambled to come up with a new card idea.
“C’mon, please?” You tried your best to make your eyes as wide as possible, seconds away from jutting out your lower lip as Remus crossed his arms by the shopping cart. You had gasped and run ahead when you noticed the display of matching sweaters, all in corresponding colors and varying degrees of insanity and ugliness. You thought it was a cute tradition, and your entire goal for the holiday season was to get Remus to wear one with you.
So far, you had been far from successful.
With the two hangers in your hands, you gave your best dramatic sigh, hanging your head and beginning a slow trudge back to the display. It really wasn’t that big of a deal, and you’d never make Remus do something he wasn’t comfortable with, but all you wanted was for him to explain his disdain for the goofy holiday sweaters. You take your time hanging them back up, wanting to give Remus ample time to come up with a reason why he insists on being such a Scrooge.
If you know him at all, you know he won’t say anything and will continue on with the shopping trip, letting your mind run wild until you finally snap hours later and ask him why it bothers him so much. Unsurprisingly, that’s exactly what happens, and the curiosity gets the better of you while he’s making dinner.
“Why do you hate them so much?” You ask, coming around to wrap your arms around his middle and lay your head against his shoulders as he stirs something on the stove. He just hums in response, a noise you feel more than hear, and you know him well enough to know what it means. “The holiday sweaters,” you clarify, rewarded with a hum of understanding.
“I don’t hate them at all,” he answers and you unlatch your arms, stepping away from Remus as you grapple with his response.
“Then why do you always put up such a fight?” You question, beyond confused and desperate to get to the bottom of this.
“It’s fun,” he shrugs, before laughing at the confused expression that’s been occupying your face for most of the day. He tugs you towards him, still laughing, “It’s funnier with James and Sirius, but you always get this adorable little pout whenever you try and convince me, and I’m not ready to let that go.”
“Then I’m not ready to stop convincing you,” you place a kiss to his cheek before leaving the kitchen, already coming up with new ways to get him into one of those garish sweaters.
Hiya! I’m from Wattpad. I have a oneshot request. Could you write a Remus oneshot where the reader is either James or Sirius’ sister and she’s a werewolf too, she doesn’t know Remus is and Remus doesn’t know she is, but one day, she forgets to cover the scars on her face and she’s partnered with Remus in potions and he notices them, knowing how she got them. Then after class he confronts her about it and she replies stating that she didn’t want him to have to deal with her problems too because she cares so much about him, and then they confess? if this is too detailed I’m sorry its just hoe my brain works I don’t request often and I’s write this myself but I have so many other ideas rn. Also do you post the oneshots both here and Wattpad?
Last night was that time of the month. A night that was always followed by exhaustion and frustration. As the full moon shined bright, your body underwent your second excruciatingly painful transformation into the form of a werewolf.
Two months ago, in the summer before your last year at Hogwarts, you got bitten. You were out in the back garden of your home, relaxing beneath the moonlit sky when a werewolf approached. Everything was a blur, and all you could remember was James’ voice as he casted numerous combat spells to get rid of it.
As of now, your brother James and your parents were the only ones that knew of your lycanthropy. He didn’t want to expose your secret to Remus, and he didn’t want to expose Remus’ secret to you, so he refrained from asking him for help. It was hard for James to decide not to join the rest of the Marauders on full moons, as they would always accompany Remus as their animagi during his transformations, however he chose to stay by your side instead. Last month, he prepared his plan a few days prior, acting sick so that he could have an excuse on the night of the full moon.
Now that school started, it was harder for him to think of an excuse to not join them. Last night he told them that he got detention with Filch, which they barely believed, because if one of them got detention, all four of them did.
It was the morning after, and you were running late to class. Exhaustion was taking its toll on you as you rushed off to potions, still half asleep. You hardly managed to put your tie on correctly, adjusting it as you quickly took your seat in the classroom.
“Miss Potter. You’re just in time. You’ll be partnered with Lupin for this month’s project. Please join him at his table.” Professor Slughorn spoke.
“Yes, Professor.” You answered, moving your books over to the table that Remus was sitting at.
Remus looked at you, offering you a polite smile. “Good morning, Y/n.”
You hung around the Marauders very often, as James would bring you along with him whenever he’d see them. It wasn’t uncommon for you to get roped into their pranks somehow. You were always closest to Remus, as he was the easiest to speak to about anything. He was the only one out of the group other than James that you’d spend time with alone, studying together or having butterbeer at The Three Broomsticks. Despite your closeness, he never confessed his lycanthropy to you, and you hadn’t confessed yours out of fear of burdening him.
“Morning.” You replied, covering your mouth to yawn.
He turned his head to look at you, his heart sinking as he saw the scars on your face. Your transformation from the previous night had taken a serious toll on you, and your rush to get to class caused you to completely forget to cover them. Despite his immediate recognition of what they meant, he didn’t let it show on his face.
“You seem tired. Did you get any sleep?” He inquired, pulling out a chocolate bar from his pocket.
“It was a long night. I was studying.” You answered.
“Studying? This early in the school year? That’s not like you at all.” He teased, offering you the chocolate. "Have some chocolate. You'll feel better."
“Thanks." You took a pieceI’m getting a head start. I’m gonna be ahead of the game this year.”
“Right. We’ll see how long this new you lasts.”
After Slughorn’s dismissal of the class, you gathered your books and walked out with Remus.
“May I ask you about something, Y/n?” Remus queried, walking beside you.
“Of course. Anything.”
He looked around, making sure the coast was clear before taking your hand before pulling you into an empty classroom. You looked at him in confusion, setting your books down on a desk.
“Those scars. On your face. What happened?”
You swallowed nervously, raising a hand to feel your cheek. Your stomach sank as you realised that you forgot one crucial step in your routine this morning.
“I don’t want to worry you, Remus. It’s nothing.” You spoke.
“You’re worrying me by not telling me. Please, Y/n. Let me help you.” He took your hand from your face, holding it in his own.
“I…I don’t know where to start.” You kept your eyes down, staring at the floor in shame.
“How long?” He questioned.
“What?” You looked up at him, furrowing your brows.
“How long ago were you bitten?”
“How did you know?”
“You look completely drained, there are scars on your face, James has spent two full moons in a row away from us, and I noticed the mark on your arm during class. Your sleeve was riding up while you were taking notes.” He answered, still holding your hand.
Your eyes widened briefly, and you could feel your stomach turning uneasily. Had it been that obvious? Could everyone else tell too?
“Nobody would know unless they knew what to look for.” He said after a moment, almost as if he had read your anxious thoughts.
“But you know what to look for?” You asked.
“I do.” Silence hung in the air for a few moments, before he spoke again, soft and earnestly. “I do because I’m a werewolf too.”
His confession brought both shock and relief to you, and you couldn’t deny the urge to pull him into an embrace, so you did. He wrapped his arms around you, rubbing your back and allowing you to bury your face into his chest. “I’m sorry, Y/n. I know how terrible it is. Especially in the beginning. I’m so sorry.” He rested his cheek on your head, sighing deeply.
“How long?” You asked, pulling your head away slightly to look up at him.
“I was four.” He answered, a hint of sadness in his voice.
“Here I was, not telling you because I didn’t want you to have to deal with my problems too. I care too much about you to burden you with my own issues.”
“I care too much about you to let you deal with things on your own. You could never burden me. I had a suspicion, you know. Somehow I felt it. I should’ve asked you sooner. I could’ve helped you in some way.” He replied with a trace of guilt in his tone.
“That’s not your fault, Remus. I didn’t want you to know. I didn’t want you to look at me differently, either.”
“I suppose that's the reason I kept it from you, too. I didn’t want you to look at me differently.” He admitted, releasing you from his arms.
“At least now we don’t have to deal with it alone. We have each other.” You smiled at him.
“Your brother, Sirius, and Peter have helped me through countless transformations. If you’re comfortable with it, I think it’s a good idea for you to join us on full moons. It makes a world of a difference, knowing that there are people supporting you.”
You nodded, feeling a weight lift off of your shoulders. “I think I will.”
There was a brief moment of silence between you two, as Remus mustered up the courage to say what he so desperately wanted to say.
“There’s something else I’d like to confess, Y/n.”
“Yes?”
“I don’t just care about you as a friend. My feelings for you run deeper than that. I’ve admired you for a long time now, and I care about you more than I can express. I realised that as I saw your scars this morning.” He reached out with a gentle hand, cupping your cheek. ”I want to be there for you, always.”
“Remus…” You spoke, hesitantly but with certainty. “I feel the same way. I never thought I’d find someone that understands me as deeply as you do.”
"And please, don't think that I'm judging your scars. I only took note of them because I knew what they meant. Trust me, you're as beautiful as ever." He smiled warmly, before closing the gap between the two of you to press a gentle kiss to your lips. “Merlin, James is going to kill me.”
Deep Wounds: Chapter 1.5
Warnings: A wee bit of self loathing from Remus, mentions of scars
Word Count: 1.1k
Pairing: eventual Remus x fem!healer!reader
A/N: So it has been a while since I posted anything about this series so to refresh, there will be smaller chapters like this one in-between each of the longer chapters. The smaller chapters generally won't focus on the reader and mostly Remus instead. As of now I'm still tagging everyone that's on my Remus taglist but if people want I'll make a separate one just for the series
Remus laid on the couch, his arm covering his eyes. He could hear his friends whispering about him only a few feet away. They often talked about him and his condition in hushed tones like it was some sort of secret but there was no point. Remus knew what kind of monster he was; they didn’t need to pretend he didn’t. “Can you stop pretending I’m not here and speak at a higher volume so I can decipher what you’re saying?”
The whispering stopped at once. Remus peaked out from behind his arm to see the group of four moving from the doorway to surround him in the living room. Sirius lifted Remus’s legs and sat down, resting the werewolf’s feet on his lap. James and Peter sat on the floor while Lily stood behind the couch and busied herself looking at the new scars forming on Remus.
“Want to fill me in on your secrets?” Remus whispered, moving his arm so Lily could look at his face. Since she found out about his monthly issue, she had taken on a sort of motherly role. She was always checking on him and trying to feed him and do her best to help heal him but that was never her strongest magic. But it was nice to have her care so much for him even if he didn’t want to bother her.
“James was just filling us in on your trip to St. Mungos.” Sirius let the silence hang after he answered. Remus kept his eyes closed but he could feel everyone looking at him. When no one else spoke, Sirius continued. “Are you really going to let some random girl help you find a cure?”
Remus sighed and sat up with a groan, causing Lily to rush into the kitchen to grab some ice. “No, I’m not. I had no choice though since James wouldn’t leave me alone.”
“That’s going to be awkward.” Lily handed Remus the ice before she took a seat next to him on the couch. “James said she’s coming over here after her shift.”
Remus put the ice on his right shoulder, sinking into the couch. “When she gets here I’ll tell her that I changed my mind and she can leave. I don’t need her help. I have you guys and that’s all I need. There’s no reason for some random girl to give me pity and spend her time and my time making a cure that won’t work.”
“Why not?” Peter spoke up from the floor. “She wants to help so why not let her.”
“I don’t know her Wormtail. I don’t know a single thing about her besides the fact that she seems to think she can help me. She could be doing this because she has pity or because she thinks this will get her points in the medical field.” Remus felt like he was making fair points but the look on James’s face told him it wasn’t enough.
“Moons, I think we all know why you don’t want to accept help.” Remus watched James and shook his head. “I think you’re scared to be let down.”
Remus quickly stood, ignoring the way his body screamed in protest from the quick movements. He didn’t want to sit around and hear James’s ridiculous ideas. James may be one of his best friends but he didn’t know a single thing about this life that he was forced to have. He needed a walk, he needed air, he needed to get away from everyone for just a minute. It’s only been a few hours since he was out of control of his body and attacked by a hippogriff and forced to go to the hospital where a healer refused to take care of him because of what he is. Not to mention a random healer decided to wedge her way into his life to try and help him for whatever reason. He needed a nap.
Remus headed out to the small backyard and collapsed onto a plastic chair. He closed his eyes and felt like maybe he could relax for a few minutes before the door slid open and Lily walked out. Remus grew close to Lily during their last few years at Hogwarts and he was beyond thrilled that she joined the little group of misfits they had. She had a bond with Remus that none of the boys could ever come close to replicating. He loved his friends and he was closer to them than anyone else in the world but his bond with Lily was special. He thought that their relationship would be one like he could have had with a sister.
She pulled another chair over and sat next to Remus, handing him the ice pack that had fallen when he stormed off. “I suppose you’re here to convince me to go through with this.”
Lily sighed and shrugged. “Not really. I think you should give it a shot but you’re right. You don’t know her and while it seems nice that she wants to help, you don’t know why she would. James was just excited to know there was someone else that wanted to help.”
She carefully rested a hand on his arm. “We all just want you to be happy and to have a good life that you deserve. Everyone is just excited at the idea that maybe this healer could be the one to help that.” Lily glanced at a new scar on his arm. “And if she’s as good at potion making as she is at healing, then I think she really could help.”
Remus looked at his arm. He had plenty of scars all over his body but the one on his arm that you had fixed earlier that morning was harder to see than the others. In fact some of them you did such a good job that there was hardly any evidence he had been hurt there in the first place. You had done a better job than anyone else ever had so maybe that did bode well for a cure.
“Give her one month, just one chance to figure this out and if it seems to go well or you think she isn’t weird, then it can’t hurt to keep trying. It really can’t hurt to give her a shot.”
“Fine but just one month.” Lily smiled and left Remus alone with his thoughts as she went back inside. He would agree to one month of help but Lily was wrong. This could end up hurting so many people. Remus had been hurt by strangers and friends but nothing hurt more than getting his hopes up only to have reality come crashing down on him and continuing to be a monster. This could hurt a lot.
