In a shocking turn of events, I'm posting my recs EARLY this month instead of procrastinating! May the Fourth be with you!

About half the stories in this set are Star Wars, because I finally watched Andor and it was AMAZING; the other half are DCU, because I am predictable when sick (Tim + Batfamily h/c my beloved). Plus a Leverage/Old Guard crossover!

STAR WARS

To Climb by Nock_and_Bolt

“Climb,” Kino urged others to escape a prison he never would.

“Climb!” Nemik screamed past multicolored explosions and his own crushed spine.

“Climb!” K-2SO’s voice juddered out over the intercom, punched from mechanical lungs by blaster fire.

And what else could Cassian do but be borne up by the bodies of those that had gone before him?

Brutally good, full of the parallels and motifs in from Andor, all woven into Cassian's final climb in the tower at Scarif. It WILL make you cry in the best way.

Coping Mechanisms by mosylu (Cassian/Jyn)

It takes a heat wave for Jyn to notice that Cassian never, ever goes barefoot.

Intimate and sweet if-they-had-lived look at Cassian's trauma from the Narkina 5 prison.

Kino Lives by ad_asterism

Set at the end of Andor Episode 10: "One Way Out". Kino fucking gets to live.

Look, a girl has needs, and those needs include reading every single Kino fix-it for Episode 10 on AO3. This was my favorite by far, I think maybe because it *doesn't* involve Cassian? The episode ending was the right ending for that arc in Cassian's story, but this fic picks up the thematic threads and weaves them into off a very Star Wars escape for Kino. It could use some more love - possibly the very basic title and summary kept people away - so don't forget to comment!

No Survivors by elwenyere (Cassian/Melshi)

It had been three standard years, two months, and twenty-five days since Melshi had made himself walk away from the man he’d known as Keef Girgo.

Great mid-mission reunion for Cassian and Melshi, their slowly growing attachment and exploration of Cassian's trauma are beautifully written, and the plot starts to poke at the roots of Rogue One.

Personal Effects by mosylu

Spies travel light. Even so, Cassian Andor left things behind.

A neatly drawn outsider-POV character study, as the Rebels clear out the belongings of the Death Star's dead. This fic's older, but felt very matched in tone with Andor.

A Proud, Unpleasant Sort of Man by angel_deux (Han/Leia, Cassian/Jyn)

It takes Cassian Andor and Han Solo an embarrassingly long time to realize that they aren't each other's rivals.

Funny and sweet post-Rogue One everybody-lives AU.

DCU

Inscribed on Body & Soul by drowningfire

Jason Todd died knowing he was loved. His resurrection took even that from him. Turns out he came back to life needing saving just as much as he did when he left it. Thankfully the Bats and Birds have always specialised in impossible rescues. And while love can't fix everything having proof of it can't hurt.

AKA In a world where the names of those who love you inscribe themselves upon your skin, Jason's resurrection plays out a little differently.

Lovely platonic soulmates AU with lots of feelings and angst for everyone in the family, just the way I like it.

Gloved fingers close over Tim’s throat and slowly begin to squeeze.

“Jason!” he gasps, choking. “Have you ever read Macbeth?”

The Red Hood stares at him like Tim just slapped him with a fish.

With his grades slipping, Tim worries Bruce will take Robin away. So when the Red Hood breaks into his room with the intent to kill him, Tim decides it's a good idea to ask him for help on his English homework. It works. And then it doesn't. And then Tim solves a mystery and almost dies anyway.

The summary makes this sound kinda cracky but I actually loved the plot. (Tim, how is your life just SO disaster? It's really a talent.)

Little Red and the Big Bad Hood by CrzyFun

Olivia Draper had been a good idea at first. She could pass for older than Tim could pull off while masculine and women really could get into places easier if they had a pretty face. With makeup and some stylish-yet-inexpensive clothes, Olivia could pull off most undercover ops. She was Tim’s Matches Malone.

Then Hood had shown up on the scene.

Charming AU with tons of identity porn as Jason grudgingly big-brother-adopts genderfluid Tim while he's undercover.

For the Sick and Dying by GoAwayOlivia

It’s been a while since Jason has felt this bad. He’s used to being bruised and aching, used to broken bones and lacerations of all sizes and depths, but it’s been a hell of a long time since he’s been sick, and he’d honestly forgotten how much it sucks. His family isn't exactly helping matters.

In which Jason is hilariously dramatic about being sick. I enjoyed the hell out of this while actually sick, but I think the appeal is universal.

The last (but certainly not least) story I have for you is a delightful Leverage/The Old Guard crossover, which was the funniest thing I read all month.

The Fountain of Youth Job by BazinMousqueton

The Leverage: Redemption team are hired to investigate Merrick Pharmaceuticals following a suspicious death in South Sudan. They embark on a con, infiltrate Merrick’s HQ… and find some unexpected prisoners in his research lab.

This one is more accessible for Leverage-only fans than TOG-only fans, I think, but it has a pitch-perfect grasp on the Leverage crew (Redemption era) and a great con setup - which gets partially and hilariously derailed when they find Joe and Nicky.

Dick Grayson is a performer. Jason Todd-Wayne was clever, quick, and strikingly small (though, if you listen to those who whisper in the shadows, the third has not been true for some time now). For Cassandra Wayne, people are as easy to read as an opened book. Barbara Gordon is one of the most talented hackers in the world. Timothy Drake has sticky fingers and something to prove.

In another world, perhaps this would lift them to the greatest of heights. Perhaps they would be monuments, role models, heroes from on high.

This is not that world.

In this world, rather than smash their foes into smithereens, they choose a more careful approach. Easing burdens. Taking weight.

One could say that they provide... leverage.

Leverage AU. Large focus on the BatFamily, but Birdflash is not just a side pairing and it's so. Slow burn. I cannot express how slow burn this is. I'm tearing my hair out. I'm chapter five and they haven't SPOKEN. Anyway. I'm obsessed with it, enjoy.

I’ve been thinking about the batfamily, the Waynes really, as one of those heist teams kinda like Leverage where instead of vigilantes, they bring justice by stealing from those who can’t be touched by the law and they give the recompense to the victims.

Bruce is the mastermind who makes up the plan and leads them all. Dick is the grifter since it’s pretty much like performing. Jason is the thief, from pickpocketing to an actual break in, he’s their specialist. Tim is their hacker, getting them in and making sure their enemies are well distracted. Cass and Damian are the two most skilled in combat although the two appear the least threatening of the team. Alfred, of course, makes sure everyone is safe and properly cared for after every job.

I don’t know it’s kinda more like a rough idea, huh, and their assignments in the team probably overlap a lot since they’re all skilled in a lot of things. But, it’s something I can’t stop thinking about.

Okay so. Idk much about Jason Todd bc I've always been more marvel than DC, but so many of my fave writers on here have been writing for him and I was wondering if you could maybe tell me about him or point me in a less daunting direction than just picking up a comic? Thank u 🥰

hello! tbh with you my primary knowledge of jason consists of reading about 400 robincest fanfics and Under the Red Hood (you can stream on HBO. bonus: jensen ackles voices jay!). Titans is also on HBO and Curran Walters is a pretty good Jay, but Titans!Jay exists separately for me.

basics are: he's the streetrat robin, got picked up by B while trying to lift the batmobile's tires, killed by joker with a crowbar & a bomb (13ish). in one timeline he clawed his way out of his own coffin, wandered in a half-dead state for a few years before Tahlia Al Ghul put him in a Lazarus Pit and brought him back to life as leverage against bruce.

he returns to gotham (18ish) hellbent on killing bruce because his death wasn't avenged-- joker's still alive, and b has a new robin (tim)-- and jason's poor little resurrected fucked up brain is having a hard time dealing with that.

he's a character that i like reading fanworks about because writers are very good at exploring the tension between jason and the rest of the batfamily. they all have issues, but broadly, whereas they (mostly) maintain their no-killing honor, jason won't hesitate to drop a bitch lol. he's a fucking nightmare, talks so much, but he's also deeply insecure, extremely protective of kids, and hot as fuck.

some of my current fav jason-centric fics that describe him so viscerally (if you don't mind the random pairings or the gratuitous sex):

Shake the Devil Out of Me- phil coulson/jay. It’s such a rarepair lol but the first sentence is: The Lazarus Pit spits Jason back into the face of the world, and he comes up gasping, caught somewhere between newborn and reborn. Half as holy, twice as raw. And fucking excuse me but I WAS SOLD.

Make This Easy - frank castle/jay- he's so fucking feral hot dude. this fic makes me dfklasjdfladsjfaBBBZZZTTTT my brain bnrrrrrr

try not to wonder what the weather will be - a sweet & filthy coffeeshop kind of AU with Steve/Bucky/Jason

realizing I probably should have posted about it here before, but the 30th chapter of redemption arc (link here) went up about a week and a half ago, meaning the fic is finally complete!

it's so wild to think that it's finally done! this time last year, i had just barely started posting chapters, and now, it's Big!!! it's Done!!!

and so, for a final time:

are you a heist fanatic? do you enjoy reading batfamily fic but wish they stole more shit? do you, like me, go nuts over needless descriptions of shiny things? do you, also like me, need something to keep you distracted for at least a few hours? do you need some slow burn romance drama?

redemption arc is a leverage-style (is it -style if it's arguably a leverage crossover? 🤔 ) batfamily au where, instead of becoming traditional superheroes, the family has embraced a robin hood-like policy of thievery, bribery, and blackmail to help Gotham and the world at large. this delicate balance, however, is threatened by several complications- bruce has disappeared, leaving dick grayson to take up the mantle of mastermind, a man in a red helmet lurks on the horizon, and one particular speedster is, perhaps, far too curious for his own good.

October recs

I apparently had two reading settings in October: gen family fic and (mostly polyamorous) porn. Triads were in the air? So today I have 7 Batman/Batfamily fics, 1 Batman/Leverage crossover, 1 for The Untamed, and then three miscellaneous polyamory fics for Singin' in the Rain, comics Spider-Man/Fantastic Four, and Love & Friendship (in addition to the one DCU poly fic). Mostly gen except for the ones that are VERY not, I've marked pairings where needed.

Charming and detail-driven fic about Bruce and Tim, that really drives home how well and closely they know each other. (Also that they’re a couple of weirdos.)

Steph took a bite of her cake, undeterred.

I was howling with laughter reading this. Nokomis always writes Steph and pranking and comedy so well, and this one lands perfectly. Mom notes! Playdates! Snacks! So adorable and funny.

World’s Saddest Breakfast Club by @motleyfam

Following a couple of Very Bad Weeks™ (which may or may not have involved being kidnapped and mildly tortured), Jason decides the best way to cheer himself up is to break into the Manor for a 3 a.m. snack.

Turns out he isn’t the only one awake.

Chaotic and sweet, highly recommended to anyone who has feelings about food and family.

I decided that what the fandom really needed was yet another object of Pussygate 2021 discourse, so here is my contribution, in which Bruce gets humiliated, Hal gets curious, and they both get what they're looking for.

In case you were (blessedly) living under a rock the last few weeks and don't know what any of this is about, here is your starter kit.

The first chapter of this is hysterical - Batman is ranked last on an internet article rating superheroes by how good they are at oral, and Green Lantern first, and then MORE shenanigans ensue - and then it takes a sharp swerve into feelings and some moderate angst. So ideal, really!

Tim Drake knows that Batman needs a Robin. When Bruce and Dick aren't interested in what he has to say, Tim makes his way to the cemetery to say a few words to the boy he's trying to replace.

Tim has the chance to say far more than he expected when Jason digs himself out of his grave that night. Tim does his best to get Jason home to Bruce. The League of Assassins finds them first.

Lovely hurt/comfort-y AU where Tim gets kidnapped along with Jason, and all the complications of that.

Recollect, re-collect by Ptelea

A spell gone wrong leads to Jason hashing some things out--with himself, with Dick, and with the rest of the Batfam. Featuring: rather a lot of thoughts and conversations about memory, change, damage, love and trust, accountability, family, hurt, lies, death, Spyral, pedestals, cases, memorials, stories, and Robin.

I am a sucker for amnesia fic, and this one is a terrifying variant where a spell makes people start to forget Jason. The resolution involves a truckload of feelings about Robin and Jason's place in his family, especially his relationship with Dick.

MISCELLANEOUS

The Gotham Job by Hinn_Raven/ @secretlystephaniebrown (Batman/Leverage, gen)

Generally, thieves of their caliber avoid Gotham. There are always exceptions that prove the rule, however.

(Or: five times that a member of Leverage met a member of the Batfamily, and one time that they teamed up.)

Fantastic read, with a creative set of character intersections and friendships between the two fandoms.

Knight Hunt! Phoenix Mountain by travelingneuritis (The Untamed, Wangxian)

"Contestants get paid by the week. The longer you stay in the running and the more you charm the fans, the bigger your paycheck after the season wraps. People compete on Knight Hunt for fame, fortune and love. In that order."

I know, getting Lan Wangji onto a reality show convincingly is a big buy, but this one manages it, AND has peak Wei Wuxian gremlin action, modern cultivation, and a lovely romance. The author tagged it ‘low stakes pining’ and it’s just that - an engaging and emotional but easy read.

The Lockwoods & Mr Brown by @onlythegeste (Singin' in the Rain, Kathy/Don/Cosmo)

The continuing adventures of Kathy, Don and Cosmo in their house on Sunset and Camden.

Involving a camera, several pianos, scheming, dancing, and a magic trick.

Adorable look at their queer household and growing family across the decades. Well-written and perfectly satisfying.

A House in the Hills by @traincat (Spider-Man comics, Peter/Mary Jane/Johnny Storm)

“Anyway, did you ever think I might want to sleep with him?”

Peter sat straight up in bed and turned on the bedside light. Mary Jane was still sitting up, her arms crossed defiantly over her chest, staring straight ahead at a spot on the wall, twin angry spots of color in her cheeks.

“You want to sleep with another man?” he demanded.

“Well, ideally you’d be there, too,” she said, scowling.

Johnny is getting married. Peter is having a problem. Mary Jane has the solution. (Or, the Watson-Parkers homewreck their way to Johnny's happiness.)

I'm normally not a fan of any form of infidelity, but I'll make an exception for this situation (read the a/n for a brief overview), absolutely. Funny, sexy, and actually terribly romantic.

A Divinely Attractive Arrangement by @fahye (Love & Friendship, Lady Susan/Sir James/Manwaring)

A selection from the Private Diary of Sir James Martin of Martindale. Concerning Peas, Friendship, the state of Blessed Matrimony, and several wonders of Modern Medicine.

I’d argue that you don't even need to have seen the movie to enjoy this fic about the absolute dumbest golden retriever of a himbo to ever marry a manipulative woman so she might have cover to carry on with her lover, except since it's Fahye so of course things go poly instead in the FUNNIEST way possible. Bless his heart, I'd say Sir James has a pea brain but he doesn't even understand how peas work.
