It is once again the birthday of this beloved sideblog of mine. I cannot believe I just made it three years ago. So many things changed in the meantime, I got to make so many new friends thanks to this little online journal, I wrote my first thesis and graduated, I started my masters degree, and so much more. I feel like have grow so much since then, I should make a new i troduction post but I am lazy and I have been procrastinating it. Today was a calm uneventful day made of reading and crocheting mostly. I did watch a movie with my brother in the morning, we have been in the mood to rewatch the muppet's treasure island for a while, and it was a delight as always. In the adternoon I rearranged my tbr shelf adding a couple of books I would like to reread. I did avoid putting there the first five volumes of Something Is Killing The Children, because I am waiting for the six volume to come out at the beginning of next month, but I'd like to reread those as well. I have also been considering starting working on a few recorded lectures this week (so a week before the actual start of my classes), mostly because there's a lot to do and I'd like to see how much I can work on in a day to plan my studying for next month. I don't know if I actually will or not, but the thought is there.
Cozy hobbit autumn activities:
Watching a movie with my brother and laughing at the same old jokes
Crocheting while listening the audiobook of The Burning God
Catching up with podcasts (both re:dracula and the antiquarium of sinister happenings, which I am very much enjoying)
Thinking about books I'd like to get this autumn
Planning my to-dos for the upcoming week
Practicing Irish on duolingo
📖: The Burning God by R.F. Kuang, Of Ghosts And Ghoblins by Lafcadio Hearn
I have created another TBR shelf, but this time it has some of my translated books.
I’m working on not reading like 5 books at a time, which is how I normally go about it. The last week or so I’ve been reading one book at a time mostly.
✨🔷⚪️
Greek Lessons by Han Kang and translated by Deborah Smith and Emily Yae Won is finally here.
I got the first signed edition (swipe for the signature) because I am a signature loving creature. It’s a must. This time it is from @toppingsedin because they put a little rain coat 🧥 on the dust cover and I appreciate the love to keep the books in their pristine condition. It happened before that I got delivered a book and by the time I have managed to bring it inside it was a lettuce because of the rain. Mind you it was my fault because I ask them to leave it at the back door. She is still alive but I’m talking about a 600 pages long chunky bk turn into a whole garden salad after drying. I’m too scared to read it just in case the whole book disintegrates in my hands. So yeah… 😮💨
Back to the book:
The synopsis is captivating.
“In a classroom in Seoul, a young woman watches her Greek language teacher at the blackboard. She tries to speak but has lost her voice. Her teacher finds himself drawn to the silent woman, for day by day he is losing his sight.
Soon they discover a deeper pain binds them. For her, in the space of just a few months, she has lost both her mother and the custody battle for her nine-year-old son. For him, it's the pain of growing up between Korea and Germany, being torn between two cultures and languages.” From @penguinukbooks
Also it has fairly small dimensions so if you love #koreanlit but maybe you don’t want to commit to read something massive. Or you don’t have much time on your hands but you still want to engage in the beautiful process of reading, I highly recommend it.
I made a goal for 2023 that I wanted to have my TBR shelf down to 10 books or fewer by December 31st. I started with less than 20 books on the shelf, but I am also a HUGE preorder girlie. I put in an order after Christmas and an order after my birthday every year. I want to say in 2022 I had over 20 new releases come to the house. So, if I want to get down to 10 or fewer then I really need to keep an eye on it. I think my main problem right now is how many of these books are the beginning of series. Which means if I like it then I also need to bring in the sequels to read.
As I said I don't want to give myself any to do lists during this period of rest, I want to learn that I can do things just because I want to and not because I feel like I have to. I also want to get better at approaching reading in the same way, I think I am on a good starting point, but although I tend to have mutiple books on my currently reading pile I have yet to learn that I should pick a specific book up because I am excited about it and I am in the mood for that speacific read, if that makes any sense. I have currently three books in my currently reading pile, the first is my all time favourite: Frankenstein. I am taking my time rereading this because have never fully annotated this copy. My first ever read of the book was on a high school book which I couldn't annotate, and then I reread it last year (I think?) with an audiobook. The second read is Legends And Lattes by Travis Baldree, it sounds like a super cozy and chill read and it's the exact reason I picked it up. I love Frankenstein but sometimes I need to relax my mind with something a bit more lighthearted. Finally the last book I am slowly getting into (finally) is The View From The Cheap Seats by Neil Gaiman. It's a selected collection of non-fiction by my favourite author and it has sat on my shelves for too long. For some reason this book gives me cozy vibes as well although it's non fiction. I am taking my time to slowly read it and annotate it, and I am truly loving the experience. At the moment the only thing is missing is an audiobook, but since I am currently re listening to The Magnus Archives it makes sense not to have an audiobook on the go.
Productivity:
Made cinnamon rolls (these are the first I bake this season!)
Continued my re-listening of The Magnus Archives
Took time to read in-between other things I did during the day
Practiced Irish on duolingo
Self care:
Read first thing in the morning
Baked
Invited a friend over in the afternoon and we just drank tea and had a lovely time chatting
I made a TBR shelf and I really hope it makes me more intentional with my reading because I'm having a REALLY crap reading month right now... 👀 Let's hope my intervention works, otherwise more dramatic measures will be called for!
