‘This is the portrait of the ending of a cycle: who are we, and in what conditions will we reach the end of the long trek that was the Revolution? We had faith, and we have lost it; we have been maimed by impossible forces; we have to run away, we have stood firm; we survived and we did not survive. What was this faith? Why did we lose it?’ — The Tribe, Carlos Manuel Alvarez; on Cuba in the 2010s, how the revolution faded out, and how Castroism soured. I know the Cold War to be recent history, but I don’t live in a country that’s felt the whiplash of being pushed out of it. Partly because I read The Tribe over an extended period, its whiplash hit like the whip was uncoiling in slow-motion, little bit like how history must feel in Cuba.

I did it! I FUCKING DID IT! After 4 months and a lot of breaks I finished Gideon the Ninth!
I am thriving! I am amazing! I am a literal god!
I should note here, that I'm not shitting on the book, it was one of the best things I read in a LONG time regarding epic fantasy, but it was a challange.
I'm not sure but the last time I attempted to read big book fantasy was like 4 years ago. I really got out of the habit of reading big books, reading books with small text, reading hardback books (no paperback in hungarian) and reading books with "big" words.
I bought Gideon the Ninth and Harrow the Ninth on October 8th 2023 and I started reading Gideon that day. Today is February 22nd 2024 and I finished it.
I will move onto Harrow when I'm finished with my other current reading plans (finish my libary books and finish a different book series i'm in the middle of) and I will definetly pick up Nona the Ninth some time this year.
That is it. Good by and oh my fucking god! I'M SO AWSOME!

I'm reading Emma by Jane Austen right now and OMG THIS BOOK IS SO GOOD. Like it feels like a perfect mix between romance and a gossip session.

2023 reading goal of 85 books suddenly reached thanks to current Georgette Heyer phase, so here’s the rundown on this set of Heyers:
Black Sheep maybe managed to become my favorite ever Heyer by having maybe the best Heyer hero. love when the basic love interest description is “this guy is NOT attractive and unfortunately i am in love with him”
False Colours was super fun, as any book about one twin impersonating the other should be; plus an appearance by one of the great but lesser used Heyer stock characters, Grumpy Old Lady
April Lady had plenty of the heroine’s brother hijinks i love in Heyer books (yes it’s always essentially the same character, yes it’s fine) and some top tier unrequited-but-actually-requited love married couple angst, but it’s not joining the upper tier of favorites
Regency Buck marks the first Heyer book I’ve rated one star. 0/10 not fun not recommended, the hero should have been strangled instead of being published
Lady of Quality is pretty good but it’s just a pale imitation of Black Sheep when it comes down to it. The plot is weak

Big shoutout to The Goblin Emperor, which I finished at 5:10 on New Years Eve, for being one of the reading highlights of 2023. It's tied for my favorite read of the year alongside my beloved Fool's Errand.

Every few years I reread Pride and Prejudice just because but this year I reread it because my friend and I had decided to exchange annotated copies for christmas! This isn’t the copy I read (I can’t risk spoiling it because she follows me on here lmao) but I love this edition. I bought it at a fete when I was a teenager and it’s the copy I usually read.
