Books Read, May 2023

I've thought of starting a book blog before, but alas - I never have enough to say when I don't have someone to bounce off of, or at least can't figure out how to say it. Plus, I mostly read nonfiction, so...probably not the most thrilling reviews. In lieu of that...here's what I read in May.

Obviously, I got 'on a tangent,' as I do sometimes. I've gathered this may have something to do with the ADHD, though not from particularly official sources, so don't quote me on that. In this case, it was partially a return to old tangents; while I'd not read the last three books on this list before, my reading journal indicates I previously went on a bit of a tangent on the subject of Cardinal Wolsey in February and March of 2021. I was also immensely pleased, in my Kindle recommendations earlier this month, to find a book on Chapuys; he was always one of those background figures in the historical fictions I read as a kid that I wished I knew more about. Gotta read his letters myself sometime, since it seems, from the Google, that they can be viewed online in English translation.

I'll give Lauren Mackay this: she's much more honest than a lot of authors are when she reached places where the information simply no longer exists, or at least hasn't been recovered yet. There was enough 'prose' to keep it interesting, but not excessive attempts to state things about the ambassador that she couldn't back up with evidence. This, I felt, was in sharp contrast to Julia Fox; I loved the descriptions of the court, the attempts to tell a story, and these things definitely have a place in history-writing, but here they were fairly blatantly...fluffy, I suppose. Now, I'm hardly one to complain of fluff, rather fond of soft things myself, but it was glaringly obvious, when she said Lady Rochford must have been thinking or feeling something, that she was essentially filling in the blanks with a story of her own devising. Sometimes the 'costume' of historicity the text wore was something it looked 'comfortable' in and sometimes it was quite obviously a poorly-researched French hood shoved awkwardly onto the head of an actress with zero knowledge of sixteenth century fashion and how to wear it, but there were always leaps from one point to another. In contrast to that, I felt that Gareth Russell balanced his reader-drawing prose fluff with his historical analysis much more adeptly when considering Catherine Howard; I've read his book more than once over the past couple of years and expect I'll read it again in years to come. I came away with no impression of James Taffe's work, alas, except that he clearly wrote his book as an exasperated rebuttal to Julia Fox; I was, unfortunately, very sleep-deprived when I read that, so I'll have to read it again sometime. My lack of sleep, however, is not why I read the rebuttal first and the book it was responding to second...even though I'd had Fox's book in my physical TBR shelves for several years and only stumbled across Taffe's the day I bought it. I'm told I've always had a tendency to do things in the wrong order and somehow make it work anyway, so why mess with a good system at this point?

As for one book being a rebuttal to another - here we come to one of my favorite things about reading history, which is to say, how often historians blatantly attack or support each other in their writing. In the last couple of chapters of Remembering Wolsey, I was irrationally delighted to see the author offer opinions on every book I read during my 2021 tangent as well as one of the ones I read this time around. It's amusing (to me) to sort of...get to know the different personalities: "hm, yes, I can see why someone would say that about Ives," or "yeah, I never did get Starkey's position on that, all things considered," or "ha, that was almost the exact same thing I said two years ago about Ridley!" It's...oddly cozy, I suppose.

Hornbeck was especially interesting as he wasn't writing about what happened - he was writing about the trends in how people have remembered what happened over the past few centuries. There were interesting thoughts on historical fiction throughout, especially near the end; that one may warrant a full independent review, if I can muster the energy to write it out. For now, however - there's all the reading I did in May.

About the Author

Jessica Kara is a professional author and artist. With a BFA in technical theatre, she worked as a stage manager for eight years in regional theatres and on several national tours. Eventually she left the business to focus on writing, which has always called. She has served as President of her local writing organization, Authors of the Flathead, and is a member of the Society for Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators. She frequently speaks at local conferences, schools, and college classes, striving to inspire a new generation of writers to pursue their passions.

Jess has indie-published a young adult fantasy series featuring gryfon characters, and is excited to now dive into the pool of contemporary young adult fiction. Top 5 Reasons to Read

Every once in a while a book comes along that you didn’t realize you needed in your life, and had no idea how much it would affect you, until you read it. In 2021, that book for me was What Beauty There Is by Cory Anderson, and this year it is absolutely THIS BOOK. Here are my top 5 reasons to read Don’t Ask if I’m Okay:

1. It’s the most honest, unflinching, tender exploration of grief I’ve read in a long time.

2. It’s also an honest and unflinching look at toxic masculinity, how it can mess up our young boys, and how hard they must fight to escape it.

3. It has quite possibly the single best portrayal of a father figure (stepdad) that I’ve read in any YA novel, ever. Seriously, Jack -- I adore you with my whole heart.

4. It’s such a beautiful portrayal of teen friendship, especially between teen boys, and a recognition of how hard it can be for them to lean on each other, even when friends are there to catch them (which holds true for adults, as well!).

5. It’s a book that will rip your heart out, leaving you sobbing and snotty at midnight, and then patch it back together, leaving you smiling through your tears at 1:00 a.m. (this may or may not reflect my actual experience, lol).

I don’t want to say much more so as to avoid spoilers, but I will say this: I lost my sister to domestic violence 15 years ago this past January, and I STLL struggle with grief. Jessica Kara’s portrayal of grief as a circular progression from dark to light and back to dark again (ad infinitum) is so incredibly accurate that I was vigorously nodding along as I read. When Gage says that death isn’t a one-time loss but rather a new loss every time you wake up in the morning, every time something good happens and you want to run and tell the person who’s no longer with you, only to remember they’re gone...ugh. I was pregnant with my first and only child when my sister was killed, and I distinctly remember the day I walked in the house after work and he kicked for the first time and my first thought was, “oh my god, I have to call Krissy!” -- only to remember that wasn’t possible and that she would never know her nephew.

I say all this to say, this book GETS IT. Ms. Kara GETS GRIEF. If you have a family member or friend struggling with grief and you don’t know what that’s like, read this book. If you are struggling with grief and you want some help healing or some validation that your own feelings are normal, READ THIS BOOK. I cannot recommend this highly enough, I’m honored to have read it, and it will go down as The Special Book of 2023 for me. I hope you’ll pick this one up, and please do let me know your thoughts. And if you ever want to talk about grief, or depression, or pain, or whatever, please know my DMs are open. “Lone wolves die alone.”

Under the Skin - Natasha Bowen

(Not Spoiler-Free)

My Summary: An African mermaid spirit goes against an ancient decree by saving the life of a boy at sea and has to make amends with the Supreme Creator. A black Little Mermaid, if you will.

Official Summary: Simidele can only recall life as Mami Wata- a mermaid – following the tides and laws of the gods. As Mami Wata, her duty is to collect the souls of those who die at sea and bless their journeys back home to the Supreme Creator. But when a living boy is thrown overboard, Simi does the unthinkable—she saves his life, going against an ancient decree. And punishment awaits those who dare to defy it. To protect the other Mami Wata, Simi must journey to the Supreme Creator to make amends. Danger lurks at every turn, and as Simi draws closer, she must brave vengeful gods, treacherous lands, and legendary creatures. Because if she doesn’t, then she risks not just the fate of all Mami Wata, but also the world as she knows it.

This novel also comes with a trigger warning. The book is set during the time of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and does include descriptions of drowning, suicide, the torture of living in the slave ships, and things along that nature throughout the book so if that is triggering to you, it would be best for you to avoid this book.

I quite enjoyed this read! Most books with a black cast I’ve read has always been more urban, taking place in modern day so finally reading the black mermaid novel of my dreams? Oh yes! Even better is that they referenced gods and creatures of various African tribes and you can definitely feel the love and effort of the author to craft the world in such a way.

The wrappers and African dress, the references to creatures of African mythology like yumbo and bultungin, and the various gods. Natasha Bowen does a great job of describing them in a way where even if you weren’t privy to any knowledge about orisha and Mami Wata, you will have a clearer sense of them by the end of it.

(Major bonus: the beautiful cover art!)

I enjoyed the descriptions of the sea and sky, of the wrappers warn by the human cast, and African cuisine. Being black myself, it was a treat to read even if I myself. All things considered, unless your family kept a good track of stories passed down the generations or immigrated from an African country, most black people don’t really know about where in Africa they came from nor the traditions. Hell, you might even meet the occasional dickhead who says ‘hey well at least we’re not still in Africa’.

There will be descriptions of the sharks that followed after the ships to eat slaves thrown overboard.

Descriptions of the lacerations from whips.

It isn’t describe in extreme detail, but the picture painted isn’t pretty either.

So it was just... nice seeing descriptions of Mami Wata soothing the souls of the dead and of black people who were commandeering a stolen slave ship to attack slave traders and liberate the slaves and even of storm-related gods deciding they can’t ignore the pleas of their people. More than nice.

Having a fantasy novel set during a very real time period could have gone horribly, but I think the author handled it with a lot of grace and respect without shying away from the horrors of the slave trade.

There were times, admittedly, when I felt the pacing was a bit clunky (especially in the last few chapters during the climax) but it isn’t the most egregious act against me as a reader.

Spoilers below-

There were some tropes in the novel I was able to catch right away. Enter Issa the young yumbo who was just screaming ‘kid who dies in the later half of the book protecting the protagonist’ introduced in Chapter 12. He promptly dies fending off a sasabonsam in order to help out Kola (male lead), whom he calls ‘big brother’ in Chapter 23. Lowkey couldn’t even pretend to be sad but pour one out for the little guy.

It would have been more interesting to see how this trope could have been subverted, but I don’t dislike the trope inherently.

I was also side-eying the character Yinka, one of Kola’s childhood who is a girl, when she was introduced. Mostly because I was worried that she was going to be the embodiment of the ‘girl friend of the male lead who doesn’t like the protagonist’, but it seems more that it was framed as just her being protective and being more resentful of herself and inability to prevent her friend from being captured by slave traders.

Bem also disappeared out nowhere. Then Kola is brought to life at the end, which I’m not surprised about but it would have been more interesting had he not been. No final magic to retcon it but a consequence of the journey besides the predictable death of Issa. Which makes me kind of question the rules of magic in this universe, at least concerning Simi.

In the first chapter, she is, to an extent able to control sea creatures like sharks and fish. But then she is later able to be able to briefly control other animals. So I’m guessing the magic system is loose, but I would have personally preferred her abilities be limited to marine life.

But my gripes aside, I thought the book was a fun read and look forward to reading the sequel once it arrives.

review:

positives - so sharply funny at times. i really enjoyed how the scene on page would be a gruesome killing or her cooking human meat and then she would just say the funniest, most unhinged stuff ever. dorothy came across as very cool, detached and clinical which i heavily enjoyed. her murder plans came across as realistic to me, nothing too outrageous or hard to believe. the only part i'm a bit confused about is her claiming to be a psychopath and still falling in love? admittedly, i don't know much about psychopaths or just human psychology in general. negatives - i had the exact opposite problem with this than I've had with several others. the first and the last 50 pages were quite confusing or simply lacked excitement, the middle, however, was extremely interesting to me. the first 50 pages almost made me lose interest because of how clueless i felt, but i'm very glad i pushed through. just a lot of (and i mean a lot of ) talk of sex, it got repetitive after a certain point... in conclusion - 3.5 stars, i enjoyed it very much. i think i might give it a higher rating on a second read simply because i would have the added context.

Often when trans women ask me when I'm performing next, and I tell them that it's a queer/trans event, they will tell me that they'd rather not go because they do not feel comfortable or safe in those spaces, that they have been dismissed or belittled at such events before. Even trans women who are dyke- or bisexual- identified often don't feel welcome or relevant in queer/trans spaces. And whenever a trans woman or ally points out aspects about the queer/ trans community that contribute to these feelings of irrelevancy and disrespect—such as the way our community coddles those who support trans-woman-exclusionist events or who make trans-misogynistic comments—we are described as being "divisive." This use of the word "divisive" is particularly telling, as it implies that "queer/trans" represents a uniform movement or community—a "oneness"—rather than an alliance where all voices are respected.
