I was recced Tigana because I raved about Baru Cormorant and I can see how a melacholy, heavy on the worldbuilding story about anti colonial rebellion with queer characters is a similar type of novel. But this is a story set mostly in fantasy Europe and one of the characters among the rebel heroes is currently in blackface for a vaguely Arab ethnic group.
This is only remarked on for its usefulness as a disguise because of the impertinence and violence said ethnic group is renowned for, which obviously makes them attractive to women. This is our first and only "Khartoum" "character."

alysmond gang, has anyone read Tigana? It just occurred to me that Dianora and Brandin — with their premise of "so you seduced the warlord who killed your family" — align very closely with one possible reading of Alys and Aemond.

It's fine. I'm fine. I'm not completely losing it over this prose in a very public coffeeshop.

Happy Thoughts Thursday!!
Is there a quote that you feel embodies your writing? Not one you wrote, but one from someone else.
For instance for @devil-in-the-details-ay, I have found this quote by Anais Nin fits so perfectly with them... "When I saw you I thought, here is a man I could love. And I was no longer afraid of feelings."
Hi! Thank you for the ask-- I had to poke around some quotes to figure this one out so I'm late answering. I don't tend to really collect quotes, so it was both challenging and fun to hunt some down. :) I went with two quotes from one of my favorite writers, Guy Gavriel Kay.
The first is the serious theme related one, which really encompasses what's happening to almost every character and organization in Sunset:
“And in that moment Dianora had a truth brought home to her with finality: how something can seem quite unchanged in all the small surface details of existence where things never really change, men and women being what they are, but how the core, the pulse, the kernel of everything can still have become utterly unlike what it had been before.” ― Guy Gavriel Kay, Tigana
This second one, I couldn't resist, and is the most on-the-nose quote I think I could possibly find:
“Mistakes had been made.” ― Guy Gavriel Kay, River of Stars

Tigana isn't one of GGK's books I usually list among my favorites (that honor goes to the Sarantine Mosaic and it's not-sequels) but there's an intensity of emotion right off the bat in Tigana that I don't get the same sense of with his later works. I don't think the development of this restraint is a bad thing, the intensity of Tigana can also come off as overwrought or mauldlin to some people, which is part of why I don't generally recomend it as a first book for people who haven't read anything else by Kay. But if you enjoy writing that revels in the beauty that can be crafted out of language and also want to experience ten different emotions you didn't know human beings were capable of within the span of fifty pages I think Tigana is still the way to go.

25.05.2022 - I actually have a structure for my thesis?! This is a relief! I no longer feel like I'm sitting here on a pile of stuff to do with communion and I can actually start constructing a nuanced argument. This is the best feeling - I actually really hate* research but I LOVE writing/constructing arguments, so I'm now feeling a lot happier and more motivated to work.
I've also been working on my Tigana review, it's REALLY hard to review a book I love so much (especially when the reason I love it is so difficult to explain...) I've finally got a plan/set of notes that I'm happy with but it's 11 pages, 5 of which just talk about Brandin and Dianora 😅 So this will be fun!
*Hate might be a bit strong but I dislike aimless research around a topic, it's the lack of structure that drives me insane
Currently reading: How Novels Work by John Mullan; A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin; The Black Prince by Iris Murdoch; Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

❓What are the books you are going to read soon? I'm a chaotic reader. I have my TBR. I even have a TBR sublist where I place top priority books. But something always happens and I start reading some random book. For example, I noticed I need to read the 'Award Finalist' category book for my SFF bingo to close the first column(YEAH!!!), so I just started reading The Bear and The Nightingale. So I think that the #sixbookssoon challenge can be useful for me, as a reminder and motivation. @dark.shelf.of.wonders , thank you for the tag! Here are 6 books I'm going to read soon: • Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay. I really want to read it, it's been on my top-TBR for ages. I even read the prologue and it was so poetic and beautifully written. I postponed it because I know I'll read it slowly and it will be the center of my focus for some time. And I have a lot of other books I want to mix and read. • A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin. It's a classic of fantasy I still haven't read. I bought it in February, but then always found some other books to read. It's definitely time to change it. • Midnight Tides (Malazan #5) by  Steven Erikson. I stopped reading Malazan after House of Chains in March because it's a hard read for me, it usually leaves me partly devastated. And the themes it explores were too real and painful at that moment. I spent last months reading more light books, but I know there will be time soon to return to this amazing world. • The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty. It's intriguing, it's popular, it's highly recommended. I want to read it and that's all. • Swordheart by T. Kingfisher. I'm continuing my quest of reading all T.Kingfisher's books and nothing can make me happier. Well, maybe a new Sanderson's book? • Us Against You by Fredrik Backman. Beartown was an impressive and thought-provoking read. This year we'll get a final book in this series, so I need to be ready. 🤍I tagged some of you, if you want to share your TBR, I'll be happy to see it. https://www.instagram.com/p/CgRucWMo8Vt/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

one of the novels that impacted me so deeply that calling it a 'favourite' really doesn't encompass what it means to me is tigana by guy gavriel kay. and i didn't plan this, but reworking the pseudo-islamic religion of lofm to be poetry-based feels like a lovely link to it.

reddit's pretty much the only reliable place for tech/game info nowadays which is good in some ways (at least there is a place for that ig) but also quite bad in others (while it isn't as bad as tumblr would have you believe, redditors will look at the most racist thing you've ever seen and be like yup that's fine)

I already know I’m going to love a book when authors have little excerpts from poems or other books or even in-universe literature at the beginning of each chapter
