I hate how the nutso make it hard to criticize Steven Universe

How can we expect creators to learn from mistakes  if its garbled in hateful death threats?

Newsflash: None of us is free from the garbage ideas put in us by our upbringing in human society !

But that’s why its even more important we should be able to listen and talk without fear

Steven Universe is full of ableism and nasty takes on race and classism , I personally found it quite hurtful and was disappointed. I’m pretty sure even the creators realize how much they fucked up with Bismuth (but didn’t realize how gross it is to have Connie regain her vision in a way that given how Steven’s healing powers works implies he thought it must be a flaw in need of fixing given its based on his ideas of what the “original condition” is as seen with his bear) 

(All writers: STOP OVERUSING DISABILITY AS SYMBOLISM!)

And I have stated how awful Peridot’s disability is handled (and apparently many people on this website defending it don’t know dwarfism is a recognized disability that actually is given accommadation, and the accomadations her prosthetics provided helped with her similar condition, but these prosthetics were framed as part of the EVIL EMPIE)

But Steven Universe isn’t the most evil thing ever... its just bad science fiction drawing uncritically on older science fiction mostly by abled, male writers.

Even POC and LGBT+ people forget “the classics” shouldn’t be aped uncritically, and removing things from context like the tropes for Human Zoo just leads to an uncomfortable, offensive mess. (Also for the love of god, put all episode titles in at least five search engines beforehand.)

And the classism with showing the lower gems actually dimwitted...yeah. First mistake of Science Fiction; if wanting an allegory and not just a thought experiment, DO NOT make the oppression based on truth. This happens all the time in stories with robots.

Still though....I can understand people losing the ability to assume the creators can’t participate in good faith after the pathetic denial of making a joke about Greg being inbred in the Uncle Grandpa crossover. (They claimed Garnet just meant he was weird. Like, yeah, no. ) I can’t say anything about the Concrete fiasco but I do hope one day they are willing to give more info in a way that doesn’t give personal information crazed fans could use to track someone down.

Listen, I understand how it feels to be betrayed by media

You subconciously highlight all the flaws, even those you in the past found charming  so you won’t be sucked back in and hurt again.

but you can’t let that consume you. 

Try to find things that inspire joy rather than wallowing in thoughts that hurt you

totally unrelated but I have just been laying around distracting myself so now I have decided to once again draw a cast line up. All the martial gods for now, since I got to tweaking up the QYZ and YY one I'd already done and redoing my awfully huge poster thing I started like 4 years ago now. Doing it this way is more fulfilling to me, maybe one day I'll return to it but not now.

i don't know how to say this without being mean, but some time after toh ends, you guys are going to do the exact same shit you did to steven universe. you are going to forget the irreversible cancelation disney did to toh. you are going to complain about how the character arcs were rushed. you are going to complain about how everything was rushed and completely forget how the writers did what they could with the shortened time they were given. you are going to make fun of your toh phase. you are going to make fun of people who will still love toh and still make fanwork for it. you are going to force it into cringe culture. you're gonna forget how hard the writers fought for queer representation. you guys are going to do the exact same shit you did to steven universe, and you are going to trash on it so much to the point people who will still love it feel guilty for still loving it. disney is the root of the problem, but how quickly you guys forget is a whole other thing. it's just so fucking predictable. i want to throw up.

Wanting to recover is all fun until some people around you get invested in your recovery and you start to develop frustration and hatred towards them because they prevent you from self-destructing.

And the gems treated as objects is apparently something never resolved or treating as seriously as should

It feels like various sci-fi stories and art were parroted/ plundered without actually engaging with them or thinking how they have aged

Death being described as eternal sleep is always so comforting to me

Do you ever get scared of your own self when you go outside? I have all these well-thought methods and all this self-hatred that overwhelm me to the point where I think that I might just attempt with no warning.

“If you move one more muscle. I’ll scream,” the hero said. It had been a long day. Getting his ass kicked by some new villain, getting the call for the special mission, getting stuck in a vent with the villain — it had been a long, disappointing day he wanted to forget.

He was close to losing his temper which was an occurrence in a millennia. He always managed to keep his cool but today, for some reason, he wasn’t necessarily keen on sticking to any sort of moral code.

“Oh, come on. This is very fun unless you’re claustrophobic.”

The hero sighed, hating how his enemy was touching every inch of him, except for his back. He couldn’t move. But the villain could, he just chose not to.

Like some medieval torture method. The suspense was aggravating the hero the most, the position wasn’t even that bad.

“I could get used to this.” The villain’s breath tickled the hero’s neck and for a second, the hero thought the world had stopped spinning.

“Cut it off, will you?” His voice was softer now and a certain melancholy took over his mind, replacing the raw and distasteful anger. He didn’t know what drew him to the villain so frequently. Didn’t know why he had called him, asked for help. Didn’t know why he needed to see him.

Or maybe he did, he was just too afraid to name it.

“You’re no fun,” the villain said, his finger boring into the hero’s side. It made him flinch embarrassingly. “Little puppy. Always coming when he’s called. Always doing what he’s told. You’re no fun.”

Aghast, the hero stared at him with from the side big eyes, hoping he couldn’t see the soft blush on his face.

“We can’t all try to dominate the world, can’t we?”

“You think that’s what I am trying to do?” the villain said, no, whispered, his lips dangerously close to the hero’s collarbone.

“I think you want to destroy as much as you can,” the hero said. He thought the villain would finally release him, not too thrilled to have this conversation. But the villain didn’t seem to have a problem with it.

“Destroying things in the process is collateral damage. Just wanna live without getting bothered. I’m willing to fight for that.” The hero laughed at that humourlessly, mouth splitting into a grin.

“Poor villain. Too popular for his own good.”

“Listen, pretty boy.” The villain grabbed a handful of the hair on the back of the hero’s scalp and pressed him forward, cheek into the cold metal of the vent with such a force that for a second, the hero couldn’t breathe. “I’ve worked for where I’m at and I am not ashamed of the blood on my hands. You may think you can live with it, too. But we both know that you are haunted by the ones you kill. Of the both of us, I am free.”

“Y’wanna ask me to join you?” the hero asked, panting as the villain pressed him into the plain surface.

“Wanna ask you to reevaluate your words. At this point, I am the only one who can help you. Quite literally. So be a bit nicer to your saviour or I’ll start to bite.”
